Rivers' Water Level Assessment Using UAV Photogrammetry and RANSAC Method and the Analysis of Sensitivity to Uncertainty Sources

Water-level monitoring systems are fundamental for flood warnings, disaster risk assessment and the periodical analysis of the state of reservoirs. Many advantages can be obtained by performing such investigations without the need for field measurements. In this paper, a specific method for the evaluation of the water level was developed using photogrammetry that is derived from images that were recorded by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). A dense point cloud was retrieved and the plane that better fits the river water surface was found by the use of the random sample consensus (RANSAC) method. A reference point of a known altitude within the image was then exploited in order to compute the distance between it and the fitted plane, in order to monitor the altitude of the free surface of the river. This paper further aims to perform a critical analysis of the sensitivity of these photogrammetric techniques for river water level determination, starting from the effects that are highlighted by the state of the art, such as random noise that is related to the image data quality, reflections and process parameters. In this work, the influences of the plane depth and number of iterations have been investigated, showing that in correspondence to the optimal plane depth (0.5 m) the error is not affected by the number of iterations.

A Plane Extraction Approach in Inverse Depth Images Based on Region-Growing

Planar surfaces are prevalent components of man-made indoor scenes, and plane extraction plays a vital role in practical applications of computer vision and robotics, such as scene understanding, and mobile manipulation. Nowadays, most plane extraction methods are based on reconstruction of the scene. In this paper, plane representation is formulated in inverse-depth images. Based on this representation, we explored the potential to extract planes in images directly. A fast plane extraction approach, which employs the region growing algorithm in inverse-depth images, is presented. This approach consists of two main components: seeding, and region growing. In the seeding component, seeds are carefully selected locally in grid cells to improve exploration efficiency. After seeding, each seed begins to grow into a continuous plane in succession. Both greedy policy and a normal coherence check are employed to find boundaries accurately. During growth, neighbor coplanar planes are checked and merged to overcome the over-segmentation problem. Through experiments on public datasets and generated saw-tooth images, the proposed approach achieves 80.2% CDR (Correct Detection Rate) on the ABW SegComp Dataset, which has proven that it has comparable performance with the state-of-the-art. The proposed approach runs at 5 Hz on typical 680 × 480 images, which has shown its potential in real-time practical applications in computer vision and robotics with further improvement.

NCC-RANSAC: a fast plane extraction method for 3-D range data segmentation

This paper presents a new plane extraction (PE) method based on the random sample consensus (RANSAC) approach. The generic RANSAC-based PE algorithm may over-extract a plane, and it may fail in case of a multistep scene where the RANSAC procedure results in multiple inlier patches that form a slant plane straddling the steps. The CC-RANSAC PE algorithm successfully overcomes the latter limitation if the inlier patches are separate. However, it fails if the inlier patches are connected. A typical scenario is a stairway with a stair wall where the RANSAC plane-fitting procedure results in inliers patches in the tread, riser, and stair wall planes. They connect together and form a plane. The proposed method, called normal-coherence CC-RANSAC (NCC-RANSAC), performs a normal coherence check to all data points of the inlier patches and removes the data points whose normal directions are contradictory to that of the fitted plane. This process results in separate inlier patches, each of which is treated as a candidate plane. A recursive plane clustering process is then executed to grow each of the candidate planes until all planes are extracted in their entireties. The RANSAC plane-fitting and the recursive plane clustering processes are repeated until no more planes are found. A probabilistic model is introduced to predict the success probability of the NCC-RANSAC algorithm and validated with real data of a 3-D time-of-flight camera-SwissRanger SR4000. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method extracts more accurate planes with less computational time than the existing RANSAC-based methods.
