The hemophilia quality of life scale: a systematic review

Purpose

Quality of life refers to the degree of well-being a person feels. The development of a hemophilia-targeting quality of life scale is important for hemophiliacs and their treating physicians.

Methods

Textual analysis. First, a review of studies on quality of life, hemophilia and related quality of life scales was conducted; Subsequently, two rounds of systematic searches of the Springer database were conducted to filter the literature on universal quality of life scale studies and hemophilia-targeting quality of life scale studies by title and abstract, and then textual analysis was performed.

Results

The former included 77,456 articles, 26,117 chapters and 7,086 related bibliographies, while the latter initially retrieved 211 entries articles, 118 chapters and 43 related bibliographies. Through filtering, the former contains 22 documents, yielding 1,431 valid word stems, and the latter contains 9 documents, yielding 1,541 valid word stems.

Conclusion

While universal quality of life scales mostly fit into the broad framework of WHOQOL- BREF, the development of hemophilia-targeting quality of life scales inclines towards pains that patients suffer and technology advances in pharmaceutical. The current hemophilia QOL scales are mainly based on the HR-QoL, others mainly based on the HR-QoL as the master version. At the same time, the popularization of existing hemophilia quality of life scales in developing countries like China is not high, and the development of hemophilia quality of life scales is insufficient.

Psychometric properties of the Chinese-version Stroke and Aphasia Quality of Life Scale 39-generic version (SAQOL-39g)

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Aphasia is a common outcome of stroke affecting one-third of the post-stroke population in China. While the quality of life (QOL) may be affected, care is often inadequately guided due to lack of validated measure for Chinese population with stroke-induced aphasia. This study aimed to develop a Chinese-version of the Stroke and Aphasia Quality of Life-39 generic version (SAQOL-39g) and evaluate its feasibility, reliability, and validity in Chinese patients with stroke-induced aphasia.

METHODS

The process of translation and adaptation suggested by WHO was used to develop the Chinese-version of SAQOL-39. We evaluated the feasibility, reliability, and validity of the scale in 84 aphasia patients and their proxies by assessing the internal consistency of the test items, test-retest consistency, and the structural validity of data.

RESULTS

The self-report and the proxy-report form were completed within 21.4 and 13.3 min on average, respectively. Physical, communication, and psychological subdomains were extracted as three common factors. The Cronbach's alpha coefficients of overall domain and subdomains for both forms ranged from 0.879 to 0.950, indicating high internal consistency. The intraclass correlation coefficients ranged from 0.804 to 0.987 for overall domain and subdomains of the forms. No significant difference was found between two forms.

CONCLUSIONS

The Chinese-version SAQOL-39g has excellent reliability, validity, and feasibility for measuring the QOL of Chinese post-stroke aphasia patients. The consistency between self-report and proxy-report forms was good, implying that the proxy-report form can be used to assess the QOL of post-stroke aphasia patients.

A quality-of-life system to evaluate children with leukemia in China

The scale for assessing the quality of life (QOL) of children with leukemia of different ages is vacant in China.Items for developing a QOL scale were selected through a literature review, interviews with 58 parents and children with leukemia by Delphi method, which involved pediatric oncologists, psychologists, and pediatricians. The initial items were formulated through 2 rounds of the Delphi method and statistical analyses. The formulated scale was pre-tested for reliability and validity. A method was adopted to weight the importance of items within the evaluation index system.The final scale includes 5 dimensions. There are 10 secondary items for age 2 to 4 years, 12 secondary items for all other age groups, and 29, 46, 52, and 50 tertiary items for the age groups 2 to 4 years, 5 to 7 years, 8 to 12 years, and 13 to 18 years, respectively. The authority coefficient for experts was 0.75, with Kendall's W coefficient P < .01, for both rounds. The entire Cronbach alpha was >0.9, and the content validity >0.75. The weights of the first-grade items are: 0.201, 0.203, 0.198, 0.201, and 0.198.This quality-of-life scale for children with leukemia in China has demonstrated reliability and validity, while a further validity assessment is required.

Reliability and validity of Family Caregiver Quality of Life Scale in heart failure

Background

In this study, the Family Caregiver Quality of Life scale developed specifically for family caregivers of heart failure patients was translated into the Turkish language, and its reliability and validity was performed.

Methods

The scale was first translated into Turkish and back-translated, adapting it to the Turkish culture. The Turkish questionnaire of the scale was applied to 200 family caregivers. To evaluate the reliability of the scale and all subscales, test-retest was applied, and the Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficients were calculated. The structural validity of the scale was examined through the factor analysis.

Results

The internal consistency reliability (a=0.82) of the Turkish Questionnaire of the scale was proved. Two-week test-retest reliability was supported by an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.91. The questionnaire's factor structure demonstrated acceptable fit, indicating that it could be applied to the Turkish population. The item loads found by the factor analysis ranged from 0.32 to 0.99, explaining %63 of the variance (eigenvalue=2.61-4.06). Criterion-related validity was supported by correlations with the Short Form-36 General (r=0.473, p<0.01) and Mental (r=0.406; p<0.01) Health subscales.

Conclusion

The Turkish version of this scale can measure the quality of life of family caregivers of heart failure patients with adequate reliability and validity.

The effect of add-on memantine on global function and quality of life in schizophrenia: A randomized, double-blind, controlled, clinical trial

Background:

Schizophrenia severely influences function and quality of life. The benefit of newer antipsychotics in improving the quality of life in schizophrenia still remains controversial. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effect of memantine on global function and quality of life in patients with schizophrenia.

Materials and Methods:

This was a randomized controlled trial on inpatient cases of schizophrenia in Noor University Hospital, Isfahan, Iran. A number of 64 patients were selected through sequential sampling; patients were randomly allocated in intervention and placebo groups. The intervention group was treated with memantine plus previously administered, stabled-dose, atypical antipsychotic, while the control group received placebo plus previously administered, stabled-dose, atypical antipsychotic. Memantine administration was initiated at 5 mg daily; the dosage was increased at weekly intervals by 5 mg and finally up-titrated to 20 mg daily within 4 weeks. All patients were assessed by means of Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) and quality of life scale (QLS) initially and every four weeks to the end of the 12^th week.

Results:

Analysis of baseline GAF and QLS scores showed no significant differences between the two groups (P = 0.081 and P = 0.225, respectively). GAF and QLS scores increased in both groups; but it was higher in the intervention group. The difference between the two groups was statistically significant. (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001, respectively) memantine was well tolerated, with no significant side effects.

Conclusion:

Add-on memantine was significantly effective in improving the global function of patients as well as their quality of life.

Psychometric properties of quality of life (qls) scale : a brief report

Quality of life research in chronic schizophrenia has not adequately focussed upon psychometric properties of the disease specific scales (including Quality of Life Scale); especially in the cross-cultural perspective. The authors attempted to assess certain psychometric properties of the Quality of Life Scale (QLS); modified as per the Indian cultural background Fifteen patients of ICD-10 chronic schizophrenia and their key relatives were administered QLS and rated by two investigators. Patients were also administered Lehman's Quality of Life Interview-Brief Version. Correlation coefficients were high for inter-rater reliability and divergent validity and inconsistent for convergent validity. Results support the original construct of QLS and demonstrate its easy crosscultutral applicability to key relatives by clinicians.
