Early-death weeks associated with COVID-19: a comparison among France, the UK and the USA

BACKGROUND

Years of life lost (YLL) is recently used as a more insightful indicator to assess the mortality impact of COVID-19. However, this indicator still has methodological limits. This study aims to propose an alternative approach and new index, early-death weeks.

METHODS

The natural mortality and social mortality laws were employed to support two essential assumptions: the sequential and translational early-mortality patterns of COVID-19. This approach was then used with the data related to COVID-19 to calculate early-death weeks associated with COVID-19 in France, the UK and the USA.

RESULTS

As of week 20 of 2021, the rate of the total number of early-death weeks per the population of the USA is nearly two times compared to that of France and the UK, with 0.004% to 0.0021 and 0.0023%, respectively. The average numbers of early-death weeks after converting to units of years are 1.2, 1.0 and 1.3 years in France, the UK and the USA, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

The new approach is significantly different from death counts, excess deaths and YLL. The early-death week index provides more insights into COVID-19 and can be applied promptly at any time as well as anywhere once excess deaths have occurred.

Construction of Stretching-Bending Sequential Pattern to Recognize Work Cycles for Earthmoving Excavator from Long Video Sequences

Counting the number of work cycles per unit of time of earthmoving excavators is essential in order to calculate their productivity in earthmoving projects. The existing methods based on computer vision (CV) find it difficult to recognize the work cycles of earthmoving excavators effectively in long video sequences. Even the most advanced sequential pattern-based approach finds recognition difficult because it has to discern many atomic actions with a similar visual appearance. In this paper, we combine atomic actions with a similar visual appearance to build a stretching–bending sequential pattern (SBSP) containing only “Stretching” and “Bending” atomic actions. These two atomic actions are recognized using a deep learning-based single-shot detector (SSD). The intersection over union (IOU) is used to associate atomic actions to recognize the work cycle. In addition, we consider the impact of reality factors (such as driver misoperation) on work cycle recognition, which has been neglected in existing studies. We propose to use the time required to transform “Stretching” to “Bending” in the work cycle to filter out abnormal work cycles caused by driver misoperation. A case study is used to evaluate the proposed method. The results show that SBSP can effectively recognize the work cycles of earthmoving excavators in real time in long video sequences and has the ability to calculate the productivity of earthmoving excavators accurately.

Long-term implicit memory for sequential auditory patterns in humans

Memory, on multiple timescales, is critical to our ability to discover the structure of our surroundings, and efficiently interact with the environment. We combined behavioural manipulation and modelling to investigate the dynamics of memory formation for rarely reoccurring acoustic patterns. In a series of experiments, participants detected the emergence of regularly repeating patterns within rapid tone-pip sequences. Unbeknownst to them, a few patterns reoccurred every ~3 min. All sequences consisted of the same 20 frequencies and were distinguishable only by the order of tone-pips. Despite this, reoccurring patterns were associated with a rapidly growing detection-time advantage over novel patterns. This effect was implicit, robust to interference, and persisted for 7 weeks. The results implicate an interplay between short (a few seconds) and long-term (over many minutes) integration in memory formation and demonstrate the remarkable sensitivity of the human auditory system to sporadically reoccurring structure within the acoustic environment.

Protein Aggregation in a Nutshell: The Splendid Molecular Architecture of the Dreaded Amyloid Fibrils

The recent high-resolution structures of amyloid fibrils show that the organization of peptide segments into amyloid aggregate architecture is a general process, though the morphology is more complex and intricate than suspected previously. The amyloid fibrils are often cytotoxic, accumulating as intracellular inclusions or extracellular plaques and have the ability to interfere with cellular physiology causing various cellular malfunctions. At the same time, the highly ordered amyloid structures also present an opportunity for nature to store and protect peptide chains under extreme conditions - something that might be used for designing storage, formulation, and delivery of protein medications or for contriving bio-similar materials of great resistance or structure-ordering capacity. Here we summarize amyloid characteristics; discussing the basic morphologies, sequential requirements and 3D-structure that are required for the understanding of this newly (re)discovered protein structure - a prerequisite for developing either inhibitors or promoters of amyloid-forming processes.

Mapping Background Variables With Sequential Patterns in Problem-Solving Environments: An Investigation of United States Adults' Employment Status in PIAAC

Adult assessments have evolved to keep pace with the changing nature of adult literacy and learning demands. As the importance of information and communication technologies (ICT) continues to grow, measures of ICT literacy skills, digital reading, and problem-solving in technology-rich environments (PSTRE) are increasingly important topics for exploration through computer-based assessment (CBA). This study used process data collected in log files and survey data from the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), with a focus on the United States sample, to (a) identify employment-related background variables that significantly related to PSTRE skills and problem-solving behaviors, and (b) extract robust sequences of actions by subgroups categorized by significant variables. We conducted this study in two phases. First, we used regression analyses to select background variables that significantly predict the general PSTRE, literacy, and numeracy skills, as well as the response time and correctness in the example item. Second, we identified typical action sequences by different subgroups using the chi-square feature selection model to explore these sequences and differentiate the subgroups. Based on the malleable factors associated with problem-solving skills, the goal of this study is to provide information for improving competences in adult education for targeted groups.

Differences of ballet turns (pirouette) performance between experienced and novice ballet dancers

PURPOSE

This study investigated the different postural control strategies exhibited by experienced and novice dancers in ballet turns (pirouettes).

METHOD

Thirteen novice and 13 experienced dancers performed ballet turns with dominant-leg support. The peak push force was measured in the double-leg support phase. The inclination angles of rotation axis with respect to vertical axis were calculated in the early single-leg support phase as well as the initiation sequence of ankle, knee, and hip joints on the supporting leg. Moreover, the anchoring index of the head was computed in the transverse plane during turning.

RESULTS

The novice dancers applied a greater push force, an increased inclination angle of rotation axis, and an insufficient proximal-to-distal extension sequence pattern. The novice dancers also had a smaller head-anchoring index compared with experienced dancers, which meant novice dancers were not using a space target as a stability reference.

CONCLUSIONS

A poorer performance in novice dancers could result from higher push force in propulsion, lack of a "proximal-to-distal extension sequence" pattern, and lack of visual spotting for postural stability. Training on sequential initiation of lower-extremity joints and rehearsal of visual spotting are essential for novice dancers to obtain better performance on ballet turns.
