CO2 -Induced Spin-Lattice Coupling for Strong Magnetoelectric Materials

The preparation of 2D magnetoelectric (ME) nanomaterials with strong ME coupling is crucial for the fast reading and writing processes in the next generation of storage devices. Herein, 2D BaTiO3 (BTO)-CoFe2 O4 (CFO) ME nanocomposites are prepared through a substrate-free coupling strategy using supercritical CO2 . Such 2D BTO-CFO with strong coupling is built through alternating in-plane and out-of-plane epitaxy stacking, leading to remarkable mutual biaxial strain effects for spin-lattice coupling. As a results, such strain effect significantly enhances the ferroelectricity of BTO and the ferrimagnetism of CFO, where an unexceptionally high ME coupling coefficient of (325.8 mV cm-1  Oe-1 ) is obtained for the BTO-CFO nanocomposites.

The Einstein-de Haas effect in an Fe15cluster

Classical models of spin-lattice coupling are at present unable to accurately reproduce results for numerous properties of ferromagnetic materials, such as heat transport coefficients or the sudden collapse of the magnetic moment in hcp-Fe under pressure. This inability has been attributed to the absence of a proper treatment of effects that are inherently quantum mechanical in nature, notably spin-orbit coupling (SOC). This paper introduces a time-dependent, non-collinear tight binding model, complete with SOC and vector Stoner exchange terms, that is capable of simulating the Einstein-de Haas (EdH) effect in a ferromagnetic Fe15cluster. The tight binding model is used to investigate the adiabaticity timescales that determine the response of the orbital and spin angular momenta to a rotating, externally appliedBfield, and we show that the qualitative behaviors of our simulations can be extrapolated to realistic timescales by use of the adiabatic theorem. An analysis of the trends in the torque contributions with respect to the field strength demonstrates that SOC is necessary to observe a transfer of angular momentum from the electrons to the nuclei at experimentally realisticBfields. The simulations presented in this paper demonstrate the EdH effect from first principles using a Fe cluster.

Negative Thermal Expansion in the Materials With Giant Magnetocaloric Effect

Negative thermal expansion (NTE) behaviors in the materials with giant magnetocaloric effects (MCE) have been reviewed. Attentions are mainly focused on the hexagonal Ni2In-type MM'X compounds. Other MCE materials, such as La(Fe,Si)13, RCo2, and antiperovskite compounds are also simply introduced. The novel MCE and phase-transition-type NTE materials have similar physics origin though the applications are distinct. Spin-lattice coupling plays a key role for the both effect of NTE and giant MCE. Most of the giant MCE materials show abnormal lattice expansion owing to magnetic interactions, which provides a natural platform for exploring NTE materials. We anticipate that the present review can help finding more ways to regulate phase transition and dig novel NTE materials.

Hexagonal RMnO3: a model system for two-dimensional triangular lattice antiferromagnets

The hexagonal RMnO3(h-RMnO3) are multiferroic materials, which exhibit the coexistence of a magnetic order and ferroelectricity. Their distinction is in their geometry that both results in an unusual mechanism to break inversion symmetry and also produces a two-dimensional triangular lattice of Mn spins, which is subject to geometrical magnetic frustration due to the antiferromagnetic interactions between nearest-neighbor Mn ions. This unique combination makes the h-RMnO3 a model system to test ideas of spin-lattice coupling, particularly when both the improper ferroelectricity and the Mn trimerization that appears to determine the symmetry of the magnetic structure arise from the same structure distortion. In this review we demonstrate how the use of both neutron and X-ray diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering techniques have been essential to paint this comprehensive and coherent picture of h-RMnO3.

Magnetic nanopantograph in the SrCu2(BO3)2 Shastry-Sutherland lattice

Magnetic materials having competing, i.e., frustrated, interactions can display magnetism prolific in intricate structures, discrete jumps, plateaus, and exotic spin states with increasing applied magnetic fields. When the associated elastic energy cost is not too expensive, this high potential can be enhanced by the existence of an omnipresent magnetoelastic coupling. Here we report experimental and theoretical evidence of a nonnegligible magnetoelastic coupling in one of these fascinating materials, SrCu2(BO3)2 (SCBO). First, using pulsed-field transversal and longitudinal magnetostriction measurements we show that its physical dimensions, indeed, mimic closely its unusually rich field-induced magnetism. Second, using density functional-based calculations we find that the driving force behind the magnetoelastic coupling is the CuOCu superexchange angle that, due to the orthogonal Cu(2+) dimers acting as pantographs, can shrink significantly (0.44%) with minute (0.01%) variations in the lattice parameters. With this original approach we also find a reduction of ∼ 10% in the intradimer exchange integral J, enough to make predictions for the highly magnetized states and the effects of applied pressure on SCBO.
