Quasi-static approximation error of electric field analysis for transcranial current stimulation

Objective.Numerical modeling of electric fields induced by transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is currently a part of the standard procedure to predict and understand neural response. Quasi-static approximation (QSA) for electric field calculations is generally applied to reduce the computational cost. Here, we aimed to analyze and quantify the validity of the approximation over a broad frequency range.Approach.We performed electromagnetic modeling studies using an anatomical head model and considered approximations assuming either a purely ohmic medium (i.e. static formulation) or a lossy dielectric medium (QS formulation). The results were compared with the solution of Maxwell's equations in the cases of harmonic and pulsed signals. Finally, we analyzed the effect of electrode positioning on these errors.Main results.Our findings demonstrate that the QSA is valid and produces a relative error below 1% up to 1.43 MHz. The largest error is introduced in the static case, where the error is over 1% across the entire considered spectrum and as high as 20% in the brain at 10 Hz. We also highlight the special importance of considering the capacitive effect of tissues for pulsed waveforms, which prevents signal distortion induced by the purely ohmic approximation. At the neuron level, the results point a difference of sense electric field as high as 22% at focusing point, impacting pyramidal cells firing times.Significance.QSA remains valid in the frequency range currently used for tACS. However, neglecting permittivity (static formulation) introduces significant error for both harmonic and non-harmonic signals. It points out that reliable low frequency dielectric data are needed for accurate transcranial current stimulation numerical modeling.

Thermoacoustic tomography of germinal matrix hemorrhage in neonatal mouse cerebrum

BACKGROUND

Microwave-induced thermoacoustic tomography (TAT) has potential for detecting germinal matrix hemorrhage (GMH). However, it has not been demonstrated in vivo.

OBJECTIVE

To demonstrate the feasibility of TAT for in vivo detecting GMH by using neonatal mouse.

METHODS

A cylindrical-scanning TAT system was developed with optimized microwave irradiation and ultrasound detection for neonatal mouse imaging. Neonatal mice were used to develop GMH model by injection of autologous blood into the periventricular region. After TAT experiments, the animals were sacrificed, frozen and excised to validate the TAT findings. The detailed comparative analyses of the TAT images and corresponding photographs of the excised brain tissues were conducted.

RESULTS

Satisfactory matches are identified between the TAT images and corresponding histological sections, in terms of the shape and size of the brain tissues. Some organs and tissues were also identified. Particularly, comparing to the corresponding histological sections, using TAT enables to more accurately detect the hematoma region at different depths in the neonatal mouse brain.

CONCLUSIONS

This study demonstrates for the first time that TAT can detect GMH in neonatal mouse cerebrum in vivo. This represents the first important step towards the in vivo diagnosis and grading of hemorrhage in the infant human brain.

Tissue Variability and Antennas for Power Transfer to Wireless Implantable Medical Devices

The design of effective transcutaneous systems demands the consideration of inevitable variations in tissue characteristics, which vary across body areas, among individuals, and over time. The purpose of this paper was to design and evaluate several printed antenna topologies for ultrahigh frequency (UHF) transcutaneous power transfer to implantable medical devices, and to investigate the effects of variations in tissue properties on dipole and loop topologies. Here, we show that a loop antenna topology provides the greatest achievable gain with the smallest implanted antenna, while a dipole system provides higher impedance for conjugate matching and the ability to increase gain with a larger external antenna. In comparison to the dipole system, the loop system exhibits greater sensitivity to changes in tissue structure and properties in terms of power gain, but provides higher gain when the separation is on the order of the smaller antenna dimension. The dipole system was shown to provide higher gain than the loop system at greater implant depths for the same implanted antenna area, and was less sensitive to variations in tissue properties and structure in terms of power gain at all investigated implant depths. The results show the potential of easily-fabricated, low-cost printed antenna topologies for UHF transcutaneous power, and the importance of environmental considerations in choosing the antenna topology.
