'I can see what's going on without being nosey…': What matters to people living with dementia about home as revealed through visual home tours

OBJECTIVES

This paper considers home from the perspective of people living with dementia supporting ongoing discourse around ageing in place and the significance of creating more inclusive communities.

METHODS

Forty-six home tour interviews led by people living with dementia were conducted in England and Scotland to better understand the connectivity between home and neighbourhood for people living with dementia. These interviews used a range of participatory and creative approaches including video, photographic images and in situ interviews. Data were analysed via reflexive thematic analysis.

RESULTS

Three themes were identified in data analysis. 1. Connected home and neighbourhood, where participants revealed the dynamic relationship between home and neighbourhood; 2. Practices of home, where participants discussed the everyday nature of their homes and routines; and 3. Displaying home and family, which reflected participant's biographical homes in the context of living with dementia.

DISCUSSION

The findings show that home holds multiple meanings for people living with dementia. For example, home is understood as a part of the neighbourhood and an extension of the home space into gardens and backyards, thus extending existing discourses that solely focus on the inside of people's homes. For people living with dementia, homes are also sites of negotiation and renegotiation where new meanings are created to reflect the changing nature and context of the home. There is not one fixed solution to these issues. Support and understanding for people living with dementia will need to evolve to adapt to the shifting dynamics and multiple meanings of home.

Visual Data in Education and Health Research: Historical Reflections and Current Prognostications

This commentary serves to explore the relationship between photography and medicine since the 1800s, in order to establish a contemporary link between the two, and thus to act as a renewed invitation for pedagogical consideration for educators and researchers. Three themes are developed: first, there is a strong link between the advancement of photography as a technical field and the advancement of medical practices and education since the 1800s in a way which invites renewed consideration. Second, there is a strong mandate to consider the explosion of visual images in our everyday and global virtual landscapes vis a vis social media for the ongoing purpose of excellent standards for education and research. And finally, the field of narrative medicine has gained significant recognition, bringing the arts into clinical practice and training of clinicians, further suggesting the value and importance of visual data in the field of education and research. These 3 themes are the building blocks for an exploration of the value of visual data, here to stay in virtual and public educational domains. Educators in health sciences and health-related studies are invited to consider the value and strategies of visual data towards curriculum development, as transformative tools, and in regards to their potential not only for education, but also for clinical practice and research.

Rapid Dissemination of College Food Insecurity Findings in A Multi-Institutional Study Using the eB4CAST Approach

The sharing of college food insecurity data with higher education administrators and stakeholders is essential to increase awareness of campus-specific food insecurity outcomes. This study utilized the evidence-Based forecast C-capture, A-assemble, S-sustain, T-timelessness (eB4CAST) approach to develop campus-specific food insecurity reports for researchers involved in a multi-institutional food insecurity study. eB4CAST reports were developed for each higher education institution (n = 22). The reports were four pages of visual data that included details of the eB4CAST approach and the multi-institutional food insecurity study, campus demographics, an overview of college food insecurity, food insecurity prevalence estimates at all participating institutions, and student use and awareness of campus resources, as well as the campus-specific resources that are available. The interpretation and forecasted use of the reports were evaluated through a 17-item online survey. The survey was completed by 26 content experts and showed a favorable perception of the eB4CAST institutional report. A majority of participants strongly agreed that the eB4CAST food insecurity report was clear to understand (72%), it was easy to read (64%), the statistics were easy to interpret (80%), it shared valuable information (92%), and it was impactful to their work (80%). Further, 84% of participants found the overall information of the report to be relevant and sharable. Participants forecasted disseminating the reports primarily to administration (77%) and with other faculty and staff (85%). These findings highlight the projected usability of the visualized data eB4CAST report across many sectors of college food insecurity research, which may help disseminate rapid findings on this emerging issue and increase awareness.

Using participatory approaches with children to better understand their physical activity behaviour

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The importance of childhood physical activity is widely recognised. Helping children to articulate their opinions is a crucial factor in improving their health and well-being, yet the field is predominantly focused on adult-led quantitative methods and lacks deeper understanding from a child perspective.

METHODS

This paper draws on experiences from a Danish study in which children depicted their physical activity behaviour in go-along group interviews in schoolyards (n = 111), and a Scottish study in which children photographed or drew meaningful places and discussed physical activity in these places (n = 25).

RESULTS

The benefits and challenges associated with using participatory methods to understand how children perceive the environment in relation to their physical activity behaviour are described.

CONCLUSION

Findings contribute to the literature by suggesting that participatory approaches are valuable in capturing children's perceptions of physical activity behaviour in outdoor environments.
