Are the body shape index, the body roundness index and waist-to-hip ratio better than BMI to predict recurrent pregnancy loss?

PURPOSE

Etiology could not be determined in approximately 50% of recurrent pregnancy loss cases, and it was named unexpected recurrent pregnancy loss(URPL). A body shape index(ABSI), body roundness index(BRI), and waist-to-hip ratio(WtHR) are new indexes that are superior to BMI in showing body fat distribution. We aimed to investigate the potency of ABSI, BRI, and WtHR in URPL, their superiority to BMI, and their suitability for clinical use.

METHODS

One hundred and thirty-eight patients between the ages of 20-40 who applied to our hospital for URPL between January 2016 and December 31, 2020 were included in our study. Weight, height, waist circumference, and hip circumference were measured, and indexes were calculated. Differences between the URPL and control groups were calculated using the IBM SPSS program.

RESULTS

There was a significant difference between the two groups for BRI, ABSI, and WtHR values, while there was no significant difference in BMI. BRI(4.4 ± 1.7vs3.9 ± 1.5), ABSI(0.08 ± 0.005 vs 0.078 ± 0.004), and WtHR(0.84 ± 0.06vs0.82 ± 0.05) values were higher in the URPL group. ROC analysis showed us that BRI, ABSI, and WtHR have a diagnostic value for URPL(P < .05). When indexes were above the cutoff values, RPL risk increased 3.59 times in ABSI, 2.26 times in BRI, and 2.9 times in WtHR(P < .05).

CONCLUSIONS

The relationship between obesity and URPL can be explained more clearly by using effective indexes that show body fat distribution rather than BMI. Ethics committee approval was obtained from Erzincan Binali Yildirim University in 14.01.2021. Clinical Research Ethics Committee no: 01/01.

Ellisras Longitudinal Study 2017: The relationship between waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, skinfolds and blood pressure among young adults in Ellisras, South Africa (ELS 14)

BACKGROUND

Obesity and hypertension are major risk factors for non-communicable diseases in the world today. The relationship between indicators of obesity and blood pressure needs attention in the rural South African population.

AIM

This study examined the relationship between anthropometric parameters and blood pressure (BP) among young adults in the Ellisras rural area of South Africa.

METHODS

A total of 742 (365 females and 377 males) young adults aged 22 to 30 years, who were part of the Ellisras Longitudinal Study (ELS), participated in the research. Anthropometric and BP measurements were taken using the protocol of the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK). Linear regression was used to determine the relationship between anthropometric parameters and BP. The risk of developing hypertension among young Elisras adults was evaluated using logistic regression.

RESULTS

The results indicted a higher but on-significant prevalence of hypertension in men (2.7%) than women (2.4%). Linear regression showed a significant positive (p < 0.05) association between waist circumference and systolic BP (β = 0.273, 95% CI: 0.160-0.386), even after being adjusted for age and gender (β = 253, 95% CI: 0.127-0.343). The risk for developing hypertension was significant ( p < 0.05) for waist circumference (OR = 2.091, 95% CI: 1.129-3.871) after adjustment for age and gender.

CONCLUSIONS

Of all anthropometric parameters, waist circumference was most significantly associated with BP ( p < 0.05). Anthropometric indicators of obesity were strong predictors of hypertension among young adults in the Ellisras rural area.

Obesity, weight gain and risk of colon adenomas in Japanese men

Obesity has been related to increased risk of colon cancer or adenomas, but the epidemiologic findings are not entirely consistent. We examined the relation of not only body mass index (BMI) but also waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and weight gain to colon adenoma risk in men who received a preretirement health examination at the Japan Self Defense Forces (SDF) Fukuoka and Kumamoto Hospitals during the period from 1995 to 1996. In the series of 803 men at age 47-55 years, 189 cases of colon adenomas and 226 controls with normal total colonoscopy were identified. Weight at 10 years before was ascertained by referring to the recorded data. After allowance for hospital, rank in the SDF, smoking and alcohol use, weight gain over the past 10 years was significantly associated with increased risk of colon adenomas (odds ratio for > or = 6 kg versus < or =-2 kg = 2.2; 95% confidence interval 1.0-4.8). High BMI and high WHR were each associated with increased risk, but only WHR was related to the risk independently of weight gain. In particular, weight gain accompanied with a high WHR was associated with a significant increase in the risk. Men with high physical activity tended to have lower risk. Associations with obesity-related variables and physical activity were not materially differential as regards the location and size of adenoma. The findings indicate that weight gain in middle age leading to abdominal obesity increases the risk of colon adenomas, and consequently of colon cancer.
