Optimization of a near-zero-emission energy system for the production of desalinated water and cooling using waste energy of fuel cells

In the present study, a biomass-based multi-purpose energy system that can generate power, desalinated water, hydrogen, and ammonia is presented. The gasification cycle, gas turbine, Rankine cycle, PEM electrolyzer, ammonia production cycle using the Haber-Bosch process, and MSF water desalination cycle are the primary subsystems of this power plant. On the suggested system, a thorough thermodynamic and thermoeconomic evaluation has been conducted. For the analysis, the system is first modeled and investigated from an energy point of view, after which it is similarly studied from an exergy point of view before the system is subjected to economic analysis (exergoeconomic analysis). The system is evaluated and modeled using artificial intelligence to aid in the system optimization process after energy, exergy, and economic modeling and analysis. The resulting model is then optimized using a genetic algorithm to maximize system efficiency and reduce system expenses. EES software does the first analysis. After that, it sends the data to MATLAB program for optimization and to see how operational factors affect thermodynamic performance and overall cost rate. To find the best solution with the maximum energy efficiency and lowest total cost, multi-objective optimization is used. In order to shorten computation time and speed up optimization, the artificial neural network acts as a middleman in the process. In order to identify the energy system's optimal point, the link between the objective function and the choice factors has been examined. The results show that increasing the flow of biomass enhances efficiency, output, and cost while raising the temperature of the gas turbine's input decreases cost while simultaneously boosting efficiency. Additionally, according to the system's optimization results, the power plant's cost and energy efficiency are 37% and 0.3950$/s, respectively, at the ideal point. The cycle's output is estimated at 18900 kW at this stage.

The future of transcranial magnetic stimulation in neuroscience and neurology in the Middle East

OBJECTIVE

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive technique for brain stimulation often used as a diagnostic and therapeutic therapy in neuroscience and psychiatry for different diseases including epilepsy, stroke, multiple sclerosis, and treatment-resistant major depressive disorders, such as autism and schizophrenia.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Recent studies have shown the enhanced benefits of using TMS for its potential to provoke changes in the physiological processing of the human brain.

RESULTS

In the current review article, emphasis will be placed on both the applications of TMS as well as the different types of TMS used to benefit subjects with epilepsy, stroke, and multiple sclerosis. Furthermore, we aim at discussing the potential of using TMS for the treatment of neurological diseases.

CONCLUSIONS

By paying special consideration to a Middle Eastern context, we aimed at illustrating the possibilities that TMS could bring for clinicians and patients in this nationally prioritized research field.

Peripheral dentinogenic ghost cell tumor: report of a case and literature review

Peripheral dentinogenic ghost cell tumor is a rare tumor with only 24 cases previously described in the English literature. The majority of cases have been reported to occur in the anterior part of the jaws. A case occurring in posterior (molar region) of the mandible in a 75-year-old edentulous woman is reported. The patient presented with a nodular swelling in the left mandible that showed erosion (saucerization) of the underlying bone radiographically. On microscopy, the tumor showed mainly solid epithelial islands resembling ameloblastoma in fibrous connective tissue. The islands were associated with ghost cells and dysplastic dentin. This report includes the clinical, radiographic, and microscopic features of the patient, in addition to the review of the English literature on the tumor.

High glycemic index foods, overeating, and obesity

OBJECTIVE

The prevalence of obesity has increased dramatically in recent years. However, the role of dietary composition in body weight regulation remains unclear. The purpose of this work was to investigate the acute effects of dietary glycemic index (GI) on energy metabolism and voluntary food intake in obese subjects.

METHODS

Twelve obese teenage boys were evaluated on three separate occasions using a crossover study protocol. During each evaluation, subjects consumed identical test meals at breakfast and lunch that had a low, medium, or high GI. The high- and medium-GI meals were designed to have similar macronutrient composition, fiber content, and palatability, and all meals for each subject had equal energy content. After breakfast, plasma and serum concentrations of metabolic fuels and hormones were measured. Ad libitum food intake was determined in the 5-hour period after lunch.

RESULTS

Voluntary energy intake after the high-GI meal (5.8 megajoule [mJ]) was 53% greater than after the medium-GI meal (3.8 mJ), and 81% greater than after the low-GI meal (3.2 mJ). In addition, compared with the low-GI meal, the high-GI meal resulted in higher serum insulin levels, lower plasma glucagon levels, lower postabsorptive plasma glucose and serum fatty acids levels, and elevation in plasma epinephrine. The area under the glycemic response curve for each test meal accounted for 53% of the variance in food intake within subjects.

CONCLUSIONS

The rapid absorption of glucose after consumption of high-GI meals induces a sequence of hormonal and metabolic changes that promote excessive food intake in obese subjects. Additional studies are needed to examine the relationship between dietary GI and long-term body weight regulation.
