Impact of COVID-19 vaccination status on hospitalization and disease severity: A descriptive study in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. Hum Vaccin Immunother 2024; 20:2322795. Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was extraordinarily harmful, with high rates of infection and hospitalization. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 vaccination status and other factors on hospitalization and disease severity, using data from Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. Confirmed cases of COVID-19 infection with vaccination status were included and the differences in characteristics between different vaccination statuses, hospitalization or not, and patients with varying levels of disease severity were analyzed. Furthermore, logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratio (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) to evaluate the association of various factors with hospitalization and disease severity. From March 14, 2020 to August 31, 2022, 23,139 patients were unvaccinated 13,668 vaccinated the primary program with one or two doses, and 4,575 completed the booster. Vaccination reduced the risk of hospitalization with an odd ratio of 0.759 (95% CI: 0.654-0.881) and the protective effect of completed booster vaccination was more pronounced (OR: 0.261, 95% CI: 0.207-0.328). Similarly, vaccination significantly reduced the risk of disease severity (vaccinated primary program: OR: 0.191, 95% CI: 0.160-0.228; completed booster vaccination: OR: 0.129, 95% CI: 0.099-0.169). Overall, unvaccinated, male, elderly, immunocompromised, obese, and patients with other severe illness factors were all risk factors for COVID-19-related hospitalization and disease severity. Vaccination was associated with a decreased risk of hospitalization and disease severity, and highlighted the benefits of completing booster.

Abstract
Peak oxygen uptake (VO2), evaluated as exercise tolerance, is a strong predictor of life prognosis regardless of health condition. Several previous studies have reported that peak VO2 is higher in those with a greater decrease in muscle oxygen saturation (SmO2) in the active muscles during incremental exercise. However, the skeletal muscle characteristics of individuals exhibiting a greater decrease in SmO2 during active muscle engagement in incremental exercise remain unclear. This study aimed to clarify the relationship among muscle strength, muscle endurance, and skeletal muscle oxygenation dynamics in active leg muscles during incremental exercise. Twenty-four healthy young men were included and categorized into the non-moderate-to-high muscular strength and endurance group (those with low leg muscle strength, endurance, or both; n = 11) and the moderate-to-high muscular strength and endurance group (those with both moderate-to-high leg muscle strength and endurance; n = 13). All participants underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing combined with near-infrared spectroscopy to assess whole-body peak VO2 and the change in SmO2 at the lateral vastus lateralis from rest to each exercise stage as skeletal muscle oxygenation dynamics. A linear mixed-effects model, with the change in SmO2 from rest to each stage as the dependent variable, individual participants as random effects, and group and exercise load as fixed effects, revealed significant main effects for both group (P = 0.001) and exercise load (P < 0.001) as well as a significant interaction between the two factors (P < 0.001). Furthermore, multiple-comparison test results showed that the change in SmO2 from rest to 40%-100% peak VO2 was significantly higher in the moderate-to-high muscular strength and endurance group than in the non-moderate-to-high muscular strength and endurance group. Maintaining both muscle strength and endurance at moderate or higher levels contributes to high skeletal muscle oxygenation dynamics (i.e., greater decrease in SmO2) during moderate- or high-intensity exercise.

Abstract
Objective. Prompt gamma photon, prompt x-ray, and induced positron imaging are possible methods for observing a proton beam's shape from outside the subject. However, since these three types of images have not been measured simultaneously nor compared using the same subject, their advantages and disadvantages remain unknown for imaging beam shapes in therapy. To clarify these points, we developed a triple-imaging-modality system to simultaneously measure prompt gamma photons, prompt x-rays, and induced positrons during proton beam irradiation to a phantom.Approach. The developed triple-imaging-modality system consists of a gamma camera, an x-ray camera, and a dual-head positron emission tomography (PET) system. During 80 MeV proton beam irradiation to a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) phantom, imaging of prompt gamma photons was conducted by the developed gamma camera from one side of the phantom. Imaging of prompt x-rays was conducted by the developed x-ray camera from the other side. Induced positrons were measured by the developed dual-head PET system set on the upper and lower sides of the phantom.Main results. With the proposed triple-imaging-modality system, we could simultaneously image the prompt gamma photons and prompt x-rays during proton beam irradiation. Induced positron distributions could be measured after the irradiation by the PET system and the gamma camera. Among these imaging modalities, image quality was the best for the induced positrons measured by PET. The estimated ranges were actually similar to those imaged with prompt gamma photons, prompt x-rays and induced positrons measured by PET.Significance. The developed triple-imaging-modality system made possible to simultaneously measure the three different beam images. The system will contribute to increasing the data available for imaging in therapy and will contribute to better estimating the shapes or ranges of proton beam.

Abstract
High sensitivity and high resolution is desired in such technologies as neutron radiography. However, the contamination of gamma photons in neutron images decreases the accuracy of neutron radiography. To solve this problem, we developed an event-by-event based neutron imaging system that can selectively detect neutrons. The developed neutron imaging system consists of an Li-ZnS(Ag) scintillator plate optically coupled to a flat panel photomultiplier tube (FP-PMT) with a light guide. Scintillation light emitted from the Li-ZnS(Ag) by the interaction with neutron-induced particles is used to calculate the position based on the center of mass calculations. The spatial resolution of the neutron imaging detector is ∼2.3 mm FWHM, and the sensitivity for 252Cf at 2 cm from the source with 2-cm-thick polystyrene is 20 cps/MBq. Background count fraction from 60Co gamma photons was 0.2 %. For various types of neutron absorption phantoms, high-contrast and high-resolution neutron images are obtained with the developed neutron imaging detector using a252Cf neutron source.

Abstract
High-resolution and real-time imaging of particle ion trajectories is essential in nuclear medicine and nuclear engineering. One potential method to achieve high-resolution real-time trajectory imaging of particle ions involves utilizing an imaging system that integrates a scintillator plate with a magnifying unit and a cooled electron multiplying charge-coupled device (EM-CCD) camera. However, acquiring an EM-CCD camera might prove challenging due to the discontinuation of CCD sensor manufacturing by vendors. As an alternative imaging approach, a low-noise, high-sensitivity camera utilizing a cooled complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) sensor offers a promising solution for imaging particle ion trajectories. Yet, it remains uncertain whether CMOS-based cameras can perform as effectively as CCD-based cameras in capturing particle ion trajectories. To address these concerns, we conducted a comparative analysis of the imaging performance between a CMOS-based system and an EM-CCD-based system for capturing alpha particle trajectories. The results revealed that both systems could image the trajectories of alpha particle, but the spatial resolution with the CMOS-based camera exceeded that of the EM-CCD-based camera, primarily due to the smaller pixel size of the sensor. While the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the trajectory image from the CMOS-based camera initially lagged behind that from the EM-CCD-based camera, this disparity was mitigated by implementing binning techniques on the CMOS-based camera images. In conclusion, our findings suggest that a cooled CMOS camera could serve as a viable alternative for imaging particle ion trajectories.

Abstract
This study aimed to clarify the differential exercise capacity between 2-month-old and 10-month-old mice using an incremental running test. Metabolic and ventilatory responses and blood lactate concentration were measured to evaluate exercise capacity. We examined whether incremental running test results reflected metabolic and ventilatory responses and blood lactate concentration observed during the steady-state running test. Metabolic response significantly declined with age, whereas ventilatory response was similar between the groups. A low-intensity/moderate exercise load of 10/min in an incremental running test was performed on both mice for 30 min. They showed a characteristic pattern in ventilatory response in 10-month mice. The results of incremental running tests didn't necessarily reflect the steady-state metabolic and ventilatory responses because some parameters showed an approximation and others did not in incremental and steady-state tests, which changed with age. Our study suggests metabolic and ventilatory responses depending on age and provides basic knowledge regarding the objective and quantitative assessment of treadmill running in an animal model.

Abstract
Twisting has recently been demonstrated as an effective strategy for tuning the interactions between particles or quasi-particles in layered materials. Motivated by the recent experimental synthesis of pentagonal NiN2 sheet [ACS Nano 2021, 15, 13539], for the first time, the response of phonon coherence to twisting in bilayer penta-NiN2 , going beyond the particle-like phonon transport is studied. By using the unified theory of phonon transport and high order lattice anharmonicity, together with the self-consistent phonon theory, it is found that the lattice thermal conductivity is reduced by 80.6% from 33.35 to 6.47 W m-1 K-1 at 300 K when the layers are twisted. In particular, the contribution of phonon coherence is increased sharply by an order of magnitude, from 0.21 to 2.40 W m-1 K-1 , due to the reduced differences between the phonon frequencies and enhanced anharmonicity after the introduction of twist. The work provides a fundamental understanding of the phonon interaction in twisted pentagonal sheets.

Abstract
Despite recent advances in digital imaging, the adoption of digital cytology is challenging due to technical limitations. This study describes our 5-year institutional experience with the implementation of digital cytology. The routine cytology workflow included conventional two-step screening by cytotechnologists, followed by sign out by pathologists. We introduced sign out of cytologic cases using a microscopic digital imaging platform operated by cytotechnologists, which allowed for remote review of slides by cytopathologists via video streaming. We also provided cytologic correlation to support the virtual slide-based sign out of histopathological specimens and for a weekly pathology-radiology conference. In addition, positive cytology cases were archived for integration into the laboratory information system and for prospective computational pathology studies. We also summarized lessons learned over the years and outlined our vision for future developments. This unique experience may serve as a role model for other institutions.

Abstract
Prompt x-ray imaging is a promising method for observing the beam shape from outside a subject. However, its distribution is different from dose distribution, and thus a comparison with the dose is required. Meanwhile, luminescence imaging of water is a possible method for imaging the dose distribution. Consequently, we performed simultaneous imaging of luminescence and prompt x-rays during irradiation by proton beams to compare the distributions between these two different imaging methods. Optical imaging of water was conducted with spot-scanning proton beams at clinical dose level during irradiation to a fluorescein (FS) water phantom set in a black box. Prompt x-ray imaging was also conducted simultaneously from outside the black box using a developed x-ray camera during proton beam irradiation to the phantom. We measured images of the luminescence of FS water and prompt x-rays for various types of proton beams, including pencil beams, spread-out Bragg peak (SOBP) beams, and clinically used therapy beams. After the imaging, ranges were estimated from FS water and prompt x-rays and compared with those calculated with a treatment planning system (TPS). We could measure the prompt x-ray and FS water images simultaneously for all types of proton beams. The ranges estimated from the FS water and those calculated with the TPS closely matched, within a difference of several mm. Similar range difference was found between the results estimated from prompt x-ray images and those calculated with the TPS. We confirmed that the simultaneous imaging of luminescence and prompt x-rays were possible during irradiation with spot-scanning proton beams at a clinical dose level. This method can be applied to range estimation as well as comparison with the dose for prompt x-ray imaging or other imaging methods used in therapy with various types of proton beams at a clinical dose level.

Abstract
Objective. Prompt x-ray imaging using a low-energy x-ray camera is a promising method for observing a proton beam's shape from outside the subject. Furthermore, imaging of positrons produced by nuclear reactions with protons is a possible method for observing the beam shape. However, it has not been possible to measure these two types of images with a single imaging system due to the limited imaging capability of existing systems. Imaging of both prompt x-rays and the distribution of positrons may compensate for the shortcomings of each method.Approach. We conducted imaging of the prompt x-ray using a pinhole x-ray camera during irradiation with protons in list mode. Then, after irradiation with protons, imaging of annihilation radiations from the produced positrons was conducted using the same pinhole x-ray camera in list mode. After this imaging, list-mode data were sorted to obtain prompt x-ray images and positron images.Main results. With the proposed procedure, we could measure both prompt x-ray images and induced positron images with a single irradiation by a proton beam. From the prompt x-ray images, ranges and widths of the proton beams could be estimated. The distributions of positrons were slightly wider than those of the prompt x-rays. From the time sequential positron images, we could derive the time activity curves of the produced positrons.Significance. Hybrid imaging of prompt x-rays and induced positrons using a pinhole x-ray camera was achieved. The proposed procedure would be useful for measuring prompt x-ray images during irradiation to estimate the beam structures as well as for measuring the induced positron images after irradiation to estimate the distributions and time activity curves of the induced positrons.

Abstract
High-resolution imaging of alpha particles is required in the detection of alpha radionuclides in cells or small organs for the development of radio-compounds for targeted alpha-particle therapy or other purposes. We developed an ultrahigh resolution, real time alpha-particle imaging system for observing the trajectories of alpha particles in a scintillator. The developed system is based on a magnifying unit and a cooled electron multiplying charge-coupled device (EM-CCD) camera, combined with a 100-µm-thick Ce-doped Gd3Al2Ga3O12 (GAGG) scintillator plate. Alpha particles from an Am-241 source were irradiated to the GAGG scintillator and imaged with the system. Using our system, we measured the trajectories of the alpha particles having different shapes in real time. In some of these measured trajectories, the line shapes of the alpha particles that flew in the GAGG scintillator were clearly observed. The lateral profiles of the alpha-particle trajectories were imaged with widths of ~ 2 µm. We conclude that the developed imaging system is promising for research on targeted alpha-particle therapy or other alpha particle detections that require high spatial resolution.

Abstract
Prompt secondary electron bremsstrahlung X-ray (prompt X-ray) imaging using a low-energy X-ray camera is a promising method for observing a beam shape from outside the subject. However, such imaging has so far been conducted only for pencil beams without a multi-leaf collimator (MLC). The use of spread-out Bragg peak (SOBP) with an MLC may increase the scattered prompt gamma photons and decrease the contrast of the images of prompt X-rays. Consequently, we performed prompt X-ray imaging of SOBP beams formed with an MLC. This imaging was carried out in list mode during irradiation of SOBP beams to a water phantom. An X-ray camera with a 1.5-mm diameter as well as 4-mm-diameter pinhole collimators was used for the imaging. List mode data were sorted to obtain the SOBP beam images as well as energy spectra and time count rate curves. Due to the high background counts from the scattered prompt gamma photons penetrating the tungsten shield of the X-ray camera, the SOBP beam shapes were difficult to observe with a 1.5-mm-diameter pinhole collimator. With the 4-mm-diameter pinhole collimators, images of SOBP beam shapes at clinical dose levels could be obtained with the X-ray camera. The use of a 4-mm-diameter pinhole collimator attached to the X-ray camera is effective for prompt X-ray imaging with high sensitivity and low background counts. This approach makes it possible to image SOBP beams with an MLC when the counts are low and the background levels are high.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In patients with mild cognitive impairment, pathological changes begin in the amygdala (AMG) and hippocampus (HI), especially in the parahippocampal gyrus and entorhinal cortex (ENT). These areas play an important role in olfactory detection and recognition. It is important to understand how subtle signs of olfactory disability relate to the functions of the above-mentioned regions, as well as the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC). In this study, we evaluated brain activation using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), performed during the presentation of olfactory stimuli (classified as "normal odors" not inducing memory retrieval), and investigated the relationships of the blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signal with olfactory detection and recognition abilities in healthy elderly subjects. METHODS Twenty-four healthy elderly subjects underwent fMRI during olfaction, and raw mean BOLD signals were extracted from regions of interest, including bilateral regions (AMG, HI, parahippocampus, and ENT) and orbitofrontal subregions (frontal inferior OFC, frontal medial OFC, frontal middle OFC, and frontal superior OFC). Multiple regression and path analyses were conducted to understand the roles of these areas in olfactory detection and recognition. RESULTS Activation of the left AMG had the greatest impact on olfactory detection and recognition, while the ENT, parahippocampus, and HI acted as a support system for AMG activation. Less activation of the right frontal medial OFC was associated with good olfactory recognition. These findings improve our understanding of the roles of limbic and prefrontal regions in olfactory awareness and identification in elderly individuals. CONCLUSION Functional decline of the ENT and parahippocampus crucially impacts olfactory recognition. However, AMG function may compensate for deficits through connections with frontal regions.

Abstract
Background: This study aimed to survey the attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccines and their acceptability among the Japanese public as soon as the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized vaccines and their rollouts started around the world. Methods: An anonymous cross-sectional survey was conducted in Japan between 4 January and 5 March 2021. A questionnaire was administered to evaluate attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccines according to demographic characteristics, vaccine characteristics, and vaccine production. Results: A total of 1037 completed responses were received. More than half (63.5%) of the participants responded positively (extremely likely/likely) toward COVID-19 vaccines. The highest acceptance to be vaccinated was discovered among the youngest age group. As expected, participants who had never delayed acceptance or refused the vaccine in their history of vaccination had a significantly higher willingness to be vaccinated against COVID-19 (p < 0.001). Females (OR = 2.66, 95% CI: 1.99−3.58) and participants who had ever delayed acceptance or refuse the vaccine (OR = 3.49, 95% CI: 2.42−5.05) had higher odds of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. Participants with a postgraduate degree (OR = 0.64, 95% CI: 0.40−1.00) presented the highest willingness to be vaccinated against COVID-19. More than two-thirds (72.9%, 95% CI: 70.4%−75.8%) of the participants did not mind a booster dose required following primary vaccination. A total of 63.2% (95% CI: 60.0%−66.0%) of the participants only accepted a nearly 90% effective or above vaccine at preventing COVID-19. At the same, 86.4% (95% CI: 84.4%−88.4%) of the participants reported only accepting a vaccine with minor side effects. Conclusions: The moderate levels of COVID-19 vaccine acceptance found in the early phase of the pandemic demonstrate that it is important to improve the implementation of effective management for vaccine promotion and the acceptability of the vaccine to slow or delay transmission.

Abstract
PURPOSE Measurement of the dwell time and moving speed of a high-activity iridium-192 (Ir-192) source used for high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy is important for estimating the precise dose delivery to a tumor. For this purpose, we used a cerium-doped yttrium aluminum perovskite (YA1O3 :YAP(Ce)) gamma camera system, combined with a list-mode data acquisition system that can acquire short-time sequential images, and measured the dwell times and moving speeds of the Ir-192 source. METHODS Gamma photon imaging was conducted using the gamma camera in list mode for the Ir-192 source of HDR brachytherapy with fixed dwell times and positions. The acquired list-mode images were sorted to millisecond-order interval time sequential images to evaluate the dwell time at each position. Time count rate curves were derived to calculate the dwell time at each source position and moving speed of the source. RESULTS We could measure the millisecond-order time sequential images for the Ir-192 source. The measured times for the preset dwell times of 2 s and 10 s were 1.98 to 2.00 s full width at half maximum (FWHM) and 10.0 s FWHM, respectively. The dwell times at the first dwell position were larger than those at other positions. We also measured the moving speeds of the source after the dwells while moving back to the afterloader and found the speed increased with the distance from the edge of the field of view to the last dwell position. CONCLUSION We conclude that millisecond-order time sequential imaging of the Ir-192 source is possible by using a gamma camera and is useful for evaluating the dwell times and moving speeds of the Ir-192 source.

Abstract
During the COVID-19 pandemic, infection protection/control education has become increasingly important for not only healthcare professionals but also students undertaking medical, nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other related courses. A review of the literature on infection control education reveals that the target participants often comprise healthcare workers, and very few studies of infection control education focus on students. We have developed a protocol for the systematic review of the literature on simulation-based infection prevention/control education for students undertaking medical, nursing, rehabilitation, and other related courses. The protocol for the systematic review and meta-analysis has been drafted in alignment with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) statement. Systematic literature search will be performed for the period between 1990 (January) and 2022 (September) using the CENTRAL, MEDLINE, and Scopus databases. We will qualitatively and quantitatively examine the effects of simulation-based infection education for students in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Two investigators will independently search the databases according to the defined search strategy. The full-text of the selected articles will be screened independently keeping in mind the inclusion criteria by a pair of reviewers. Descriptive data will be extracted from each study regarding: study design, methods, participants, and outcomes. A meta-analysis will be performed if the quantitative data is suitable. Heterogeneity will be assessed using the standard χ2. Odds ratio for categorical data and weighted mean differences for continuous data and their 95% confidence intervals will be calculated and used for analysis. Where statistical pooling is not possible, the findings of the quantitative papers will be presented in narrative form. The qualitative aspect will employ narrative (descriptive) synthesis. Our review will make a valuable contribution to the domain of simulation-based infection prevention/control for students enrolled in medical and/or related courses.

Abstract
Background and Aim Symptoms of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) frequently impair one's quality of life (QOL). Nonetheless, with improved treatment, the prognosis of PBC also improves. QOL plays an important role in patients with PBC. In this study, we aimed to reevaluate the transition of new symptom development in PBC and its predictive factors. Methods This retrospective multicenter study enrolled 382 patients with PBC for symptom analysis. The impact of a newly developed symptom on PBC prognosis was investigated by Kaplan–Meier analysis with propensity score matching and logistic progression analysis. Results The cumulative risk of developing a new symptom after 10 and 20 years of follow‐up was 7.6 and 28.2%, and specifically that of pruritus, which was the most common symptom, was 6.7 and 23.3%, respectively. In Cox hazard risk analysis, serum Alb level (hazard ratio [HR], 1.097; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.033–1.165; P = 0.002), the serum D‐Bil level (HR, 6.262; 95% CI, 2.522–15.553, P < 0.001), and Paris II criteria (HR, 0.435; 95% CI, 0.183–1.036; P = 0.037) were significant independent predictors of a new symptom. Kaplan–Meier analysis showed that the overall survival and liver‐related death were not significant between patients with and without a new symptom. Conclusion The cumulative risk of new symptom development is roughly 30% 20 years after diagnosis and could be predicted by factors including serum albumin levels, serum D‐Bil level, and Paris II criteria.

Abstract
BackgroundDifficult-to-treat rheumatoid arthritis (D2T RA) is defined as RA in which disease activity is uncontrolled despite the use of two or more biologics or Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKi) with different mechanisms of action (MOA).ObjectivesTo explore the optimal treatment strategy for D2T RA, we evaluated the drug retention, efficacy, and reasons for discontinuation of biologics or JAKi used for patients with D2T RA in a longitudinal multicenter cohort.MethodsRA patients with clinical disease activity index (CDAI) >10 despite the use of at least two biologics or JAKi with different MOA and further treated with biologics or JAKi were included. The drug retention rates of biologics (TNFi, IL-6Ri, and CTLA4-Ig) or JAKi were estimated at 12 months using the Kaplan-Meier method and adjusted for potential confounders (age, sex, disease duration, concomitant MTX and PSL use, and the number of switched biologics or JAKi) using Cox proportional hazards models.ResultsA total of 251 treatment courses (TCs) from 167 patients were included (TNFi: 97 TCs, IL-6Ri: 67 TCs, CTLA4-Ig: 27 TCs, JAKi: 60 TCs). Baseline characteristics showed no difference in age, sex, disease duration, ACPA positivity, CDAI, and concomitant MTX and PSL use between the four groups. Drug retention excluding non-toxic reasons and remission was significantly higher in patients treated with JAKi or IL-6Ri than in patients treated with TNFi or CTLA4-Ig (P=0.00172). Multivariate analysis using Cox proportional hazards models demonstrated that discontinuation of the drug was associated with the use of TNFi or CTLA4-Ig (HR: 3.29, 95%CI: 1.15-9.42, P=0.027) and concomitant PSL use (HR: 1.14, 95%CI: 1.04-1.26, P=0.0084). Abstract
Coincidence timing resolution (CTR) is an important parameter in clinical positron emission tomography (PET) scanners to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of PET images by using time-of-flight (TOF) information. Lutetium (Lu) based scintillators are often used for TOF-PET systems. However, the self-radiation of Lu-based scintillators may influence the image quality for ultra-low activity PET imaging. Recently, a gadolinium fine aluminum gallate (Ce:GFAG) scintillation crystal that features a fast decay time (~55 ns) and no self-radiation was developed. The present study aimed at optimizing the GFAG crystal surface treatment to enhance both CTR and energy resolution (ER). The TOF-PET detector consisted of a GFAG crystal (3.0 × 3.0 × 20 mm3) and a SiPM with an effective area of 3.0 × 3.0 mm2. The timing and energy signals were extracted using a high-frequency SiPM readout circuit and then were digitized using a CAMAC DAQ system. The CTR and ER were evaluated with nine different crystal surface treatments such as partial saw-cut and chemical polishing and the 1-side saw-cut was the best choice among the treatments. The respective CTR and ER of 202±2 ps and 9.5±0.1% were obtained with the 1-side saw-cut; the other 5-side mechanically polished GFAG crystals had respective values which were 18 ps (9.0%) and 1.3% better than those of the all-side mechanically polished GFAG crystal. The chemically polished GFAG crystals also offered enhanced CTR and ER of about 17 ps (8.2%) and 2.1%, respectively, over the mechanically polished GFAG crystals.

Abstract
The effect of the difference in the thickness ratio of the double-layered thickness-shear resonator on the temperature characteristics of the resonance frequency was investigated using a Ca3TaGa3Si2O14 (CTGS) single crystal. Three specimens with thickness ratios of x = 0.25 , 0.33, and 0.50 were prepared using 122° Y - and 171° Y -cut CTGS substrates. For the specimens with x = 0.25 and 0.33, the temperature characteristics varied depending on the order of the resonance mode. For the specimen with x = 0.50 , on the other hand, almost the same temperature characteristics were observed regardless of the order of the resonance mode. To interpret this phenomenon, a new equation for predicting the temperature characteristics of the fundamental mode (first mode) for the double-layered resonator was created using the electric flux density ratio generated in the two substrates. The expected values using this equation were in good agreement with the result of the first mode temperature characteristics.

Abstract
Objective.Time-of-flight (TOF) and depth-of-interaction (DOI) are well recognized as important information to improve PET image quality. Since such information types are not correlated, many TOF-DOI detectors have been developed but there are only a few reports of high-resolution detectors (e.g. 1.5 mm resolution) for brain PET systems. Based on the DOI detector, which enables single-ended readout by optically coupling a pair of crystals and having a loop structure, we have developed the crosshair light sharing (CLS) PET detector that optically couples the four-loop structure, consisting of quadrisected crystals comparable in size to a photo-sensor, to four photo-sensors in close proximity arranged in a windmill shape. Even as a high-resolution detector, the CLS PET detector could obtain both TOF and DOI information. The coincidence resolving time (CRT) of the CLS PET detector needs to be further improved, however, for application to the brain PET system. Recently, a fast LGSO crystal was developed which has advantages in detection efficiency and CRT compared to the GFAG crystal. In this work, we developed the CLS PET detector using the fast LGSO crystal for the TOF-DOI brain PET system.Approach.The crystals were each 1.45 × 1.45 × 15 mm3and all surfaces were chemically etched. The CLS PET detector consisted of a 14 × 14 crystal array optically coupled to an 8 × 8 MPPC array.Main results.The fast LGSO array provided 10.1% energy resolution at 511 keV, 4.7 mm DOI resolution at 662 keV, and 293 ps CRT with the energy window of 440-620 keV.Significance.The developed CLS PET detector has 290% higher coincidence sensitivity, 30% better energy resolution, and 32% better time resolution compared to our previous CLS PET detector.

Abstract
There has been a long-standing controversy regarding the physiological role of serotonin (5-HT) neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) in sleep/wake architecture. Some studies have reported that 5-HT acts as a sleep-promoting agent, but several studies have suggested that DRN 5-HT neurons function predominantly to promote wakefulness and inhibit rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Furthermore, recent studies have reported that there is a clear neurobiological difference between a waking state that includes alertness and active exploration (i.e., active wakefulness) and a waking state that is devoid of locomotion (i.e., quiet wakefulness). These states have also been shown to differ clinically in terms of memory consolidation. However, the effects of 5-HT neurons on the regulation of these two different waking states have not been fully elucidated. In the present study, we attempted to examine the physiological role of DRN 5-HT neurons in various sleep/wake states using optogenetic methods that allowed manipulation of cell-type specific neuronal activation with high temporal and anatomical precision. We crossed TPH2-tTA and TetO-ChR2(C128S) mice to obtain mice with channelrhodopsin-2 (ChR2) [C128S]-expressing central 5-HT neurons, and we activated DRN-5HT neurons or medullary 5-HT neurons. Optogenetic activation of DRN 5-HT neurons caused rapid transition from non-REM sleep to active wakefulness, not quiet wakefulness, whereas activation of medullary 5-HT neurons did not appear to affect sleep/wake states or locomotor activity. Our results may shed light on the physiological role of DRN 5-HT neurons in sleep/wake architecture and encourage further investigations of the cortical functional connectivity involved in sleep/wake state regulation.

Abstract
Pulmonary tumor thrombotic microangiopathy (PTTM) is a rare but fatal cancer-related disease. Owing to its non-specific findings, aggressive course, and lack of established treatment guidelines, only a few cases of antemortem diagnosis in long-term survivors have been reported. We aimed to report a case of uterine cervical cancer induced PTTM that was suspected based on pulmonary hypertension and successfully treated using combination chemotherapy despite of delayed diagnose. It is important to be aware that PTTM should be suspected when respiratory failure occurs in patients with unexplained pulmonary hypertension. Multidisciplinary treatments including molecular targeted therapies might be effective treatment options.

Abstract
Specific odors can induce memories of the past, especially those associated with autobiographical and episodic memory. Odors associated with autobiographical memories have been found to elicit stronger activation in the orbitofrontal cortex, hippocampus, and parahippocampus compared with odors not linked to personal memories. Here, we examined whether continuous odor stimuli associated with autobiographical memories could activate the above olfactory areas in older adults and speculated regarding whether this odor stimulation could have a protective effect against age-related cognitive decline. Specifically, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the relationship between blood oxygen levels in olfactory regions and odor-induced subjective memory retrieval and emotions associated with autobiographical memory in older adults. In our group of healthy older adults, the tested odors induced autobiographical memories that were accompanied by increasing levels of retrieval and the feeling of being "brought back in time." The strength of the subjective feelings, including vividness of the memory and degree of comfort, impacted activation of the left fusiform gyrus and left posterior orbitofrontal cortex. Further, our path model suggested that the strength of memory retrieval and of the emotions induced by odor-evoked autobiographical memories directly influenced neural changes in the left fusiform gyrus, and impacted left posterior orbitofrontal cortex activation through the left fusiform response.

Abstract
Emotion recognition is known to change with age, but associations between the change and brain atrophy are not well understood. In the current study atrophied brain regions associated with emotion recognition were investigated in elderly and younger participants. Group comparison showed no difference in emotion recognition score, while the score was associated with years of education, not age. We measured the gray matter volume of 18 regions of interest including the bilateral precuneus, supramarginal gyrus, orbital gyrus, straight gyrus, superior temporal sulcus, inferior frontal gyrus, insular cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus, which have been associated with social function and emotion recognition. Brain reductions were observed in elderly group except left inferior frontal gyrus, left straight gyrus, right orbital gyrus, right inferior frontal gyrus, and right supramarginal gyrus. Path analysis was performed using the following variables: age, years of education, emotion recognition score, and the 5 regions that were not different between the groups. The analysis revealed that years of education were associated with volumes of the right orbital gyrus, right inferior frontal gyrus, and right supramarginal gyrus. Furthermore, the right supramarginal gyrus volume was associated with the emotion recognition score. These results suggest that the amount of education received contributes to maintain the right supramarginal gyrus volume, and indirectly affects emotion recognition ability.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Pathological abnormalities first appear in the medial temporal regions including entorhinal cortex and parahippocampus in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Previous studies showed that olfactory decline in elderly subjects was associated with volume reductions in the left hippocampus and left parahippocampus without cognitive impairment. The aim of this study is to investigate the link between olfaction and volume reductions in the medial temporal regions including the parahippocampus, entorhinal cortex, and hippocampal subfields. METHOD 27 elderly subjects and 27 young controls were measured olfaction acuity, cognitive function, and structural magnetic resonance imaging. Image processing and gray matter volumetric segmentation were performed with FreeSurfer. Volume data were analyzed with SPSS Statistics software. RESULTS Interesting results of this study were that volume reduction in the entorhinal cortex was not directly linked with declining olfactory ability. Volume reduction in the left entorhinal cortex was correlated with volume reduction in the left parahippocampus and dentate gyrus. However, left parahippocampus volume reduction had the greatest impact on olfactory decline, and the entorhinal cortex and dentate gyrus might additionally contribute to olfactory decline. CONCLUSION Our results indicate that olfactory decline may be directly reflected in the medial temporal regions as reduced parahippocampus volumes, rather than as morphological changes in the entorhinal cortex and hippocampus. The parahippocampus may play an important role in the association between memory retrieval and olfactory identification.

Abstract
This study presents the criteria for shape control in the micro-pulling-down (μ-PD) method for low-wettability systems (dewetting μ-PD method), which enables us to achieve highly shape-controllable crystal growth. In the dewetting μ-PD method, the presence of the die wall inhibits the direct observation of the meniscus during the process. Therefore, in this study, the meniscus shape was calculated using the Young-Laplace equation to predict the optimal crystal growth conditions. The free-end and fixed-end boundary conditions to be satisfied for the differential equations were defined at the triple point, with the melt on the die wall. The relationship between the crystal diameter and pressure in the fixed-end condition, wherein the wetting angle (α) at the triple point of the crystal was 90°, indicated the suppression of the melt infiltration by the presence of crystals. The gap between the die and crystal was minimized for the contact angle (θ) and growth angle (αgr) in the fixed-end and free-end conditions, at which |αgr + θ - π| was minimum at a given pressure under the assumption of single-valued solutions. The results of this study will facilitate the formation of noble-metal alloys with a net shape and expand the scope for the development of new materials.

Abstract
We report on the potential of the potassium magnesium fluoride (KMgF) crystal as a fast-response scintillator with tunable cross-luminescence (CL) emission wavelength through high-pressure applications. By performing first-principles density functional theory calculations using the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) hybrid functional including exact exchange (PBE0) and Green's function and screened Coulomb interaction approximation as implemented in the Vienna Ab initio Simulation Package using plane-wave basis sets within the projector-augmented wave method, we identify the specific valence-to-core band transition that results in the experimentally observed CL emission at 148 nm (8.38 eV) and 170 nm (7.29 eV) wavelengths with intrinsically fast decay times of 290 ps and 210 ps, respectively. Uniform volume compression through hydrostatic high-pressure applications could decrease the energy gap between the valence and core bands, potentially shifting the CL emission wavelength to the ultraviolet (UV) region from 200 nm (6.2 eV) to 300 nm (4.1 eV). The ability to tune and shift the CL emission to UV wavelengths allows for the detection of the CL emission using UV-sensitive photodetectors in ambient atmosphere instead of highly specialized vacuum UV detectors operating in vacuum while maintaining the intrinsically fast CL decay times, thereby opening up new possibilities for KMgF as a fast-response scintillator.

Abstract
The crosshair light-sharing (CLS) PET detector is our original depth-of-interaction (DOI) detector, which is based on a single-ended readout scheme with quadrisected crystals comparable in size to a photo-sensor. In this work, we developed 32 CLS PET detectors, each of which consisted of a multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC) array and gadolinium fine aluminum garnet (GFAG) crystals, and we developed a benchtop prototype of a small animal size PET. Each GFAG crystal was 1.45 × 1.45 × 15 mm3. The MPPC had a surface area of 3.0 × 3.0 mm2. The benchtop prototype had two detector rings of 16 detector blocks. The ring diameter and axial field-of-view were 14.2 cm and 4.9 cm, respectively. The data acquisition system used was the PETsys silicon photomultiplier readout system. The continuous DOI information was binned into three DOI layers by applying a look-up-table to a 2D position histogram. Also, energy and timing information was corrected using DOI information. After the calibration procedure, the energy resolution and the coincidence time resolution were 14.6% and 531 ps, respectively. Imaging test results of a small rod phantom obtained by an iterative reconstruction method showed clear separation of 1.6 mm rods with the help of DOI information.

Abstract
We propose a scheme for imaging mid-infrared (MIR) wavelengths via pre-excitation-assisted up-conversion luminescence in lanthanide ion (Ln3+)-doped Self-organizing Optical FIber Array (SOFIA) crystal. First, near-infrared pre-excitation wavelength excites an electron from the ground state to an excited state of Ln3+. Next, the MIR wavelength to be imaged promotes this excited electron to a higher-lying energy state. Finally, relaxation of the electron from the higher-lying energy state to the ground state emits the up-conversion luminescence in the visible region, completing the MIR-to-visible wavelength conversion. An analysis of the 4f to 4f intra-configurational energy level transitions in Ln3+, together with an appropriate selection of the pre-excitation wavelength and the visible luminescence constrained within the 500-700 nm wavelength range, reveals that trivalent erbium (Er3+), thulium (Tm3+), holmium (Ho3+), and neodymium (Nd3+) can be used to image MIR wavelengths. Our proposed scheme, called MIR imAging through up-Conversion LuminEscence in a SOFIA crystal, will enable the imaging of MIR wavelengths using low-cost optics and readily available silicon-based detectors in the visible spectral region and will open up new possibilities for MIR wavelength detection and imaging.

Abstract
AIM Disease characteristics of primary biliary cholangitis have changed recently. However, detailed studies on the subject have been limited. Therefore, we aimed to clarify disease characteristics of patients with recent primary biliary cholangitis using the cohort from Niigata University and 21 affiliated hospitals. METHODS Overall, 508 patients were enrolled in this study from 1982 to 2016, divided into three cohorts according to their year of diagnosis: ≤1999, 2000-2009 and ≥2010. We compared differences in clinical characteristics, response to ursodeoxycholic acid and prognosis. RESULTS The male-to-female ratio increased incrementally from 1:16.4 (≤1999) to 1:3.8 (≥2010) (P < 0.001). In women, the median age at diagnosis increased incrementally from 54.0 years (≤1999) to 60.5 years (≥2010) (P < 0.001) and serum albumin decreased gradually (P = 0.001), which might have affected the increase in the Fibrosis-4 Index and albumin-bilirubin score. The ursodeoxycholic acid response rate according to the Barcelona criteria increased incrementally from 26.7% (≤1999) to 78.4% (≥2010) (P < 0.010), and those according to other criteria (Paris-I, Rotterdam and Toronto) were approximately ≥80% in all cohorts. Ten-year survival rate in the ≤1999 and 2000-2009 cohorts were 98.6% and 95.6%, respectively. These earlier cohorts were also characterized by a higher rate of asymptomatic state and mild histology (83.5% [≤1999] and 84.7% [2000-2009], and 93.6% [≤1999] and 91.1% [2000-2009]). CONCLUSIONS Patients with primary biliary cholangitis were characterized by older age at diagnosis and an increase in male to female ratio as well as higher response rates of ursodeoxycholic acid and longer survival, resulting from the early recognition of primary biliary cholangitis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION PD1/PD-L1 pathway targeting therapies are nowadays an established treatment option for patients with NSCLC. We assessed whether PD-L1 expression in NSCLC tumor cells was associated with specific clinical features or overall survival using four different clones. METHODS AND RESULTS A retrospective study included formalin-fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) surgical tumors from 482 patients. PD-L1 status was assessed with immunohistochemistry in tumor cells on tissue microarrays using clones 28-8, 22C3, SP263 and SP142. Associations with OS were assessed by Kaplan-Meier and multivariate Cox's regression analysis. Patients' median age: 68 years (39-86); histology: adenocarcinoma (AdCa) 61%, squamous-cell carcinoma (SqCC) 33%, and large cell carcinoma (LCC) 6%; p-stage: IA (46%), IB (30%), IIA (10%), IIB (11,4%), IIIA (1,2%), IIIB - IV (0,4%). PD-L1 positivity (≥1%) in NSCLC for clones 28-8, 22C3, SP263, SP142 was 41.5%, 34.2%, 42.7%, 10.4%, respectively (Pearson Chi-square p < 0.0001). PD-L1 expression was correlated with histology, tumor size and grading. Statistically significant association between PD-L1 expression and OS in NSCLC and Non-AdCa was observed with clone SP142 (log-rank p = 0.045 and p = 0.05, respectively). Statistically significant association between PD-L1 expression and OS in LCC was observed with clones 22C3 (log-rank p = 0.009) and SP263 (log-rank p = 0.050). CONCLUSIONS Overexpression of the PD-L1 clone SP142 was associated with poor overall survival in NSCLC and Non-AdCa. Clones 22C3 and SP263 were associated with poor prognosis in LCC. PD-L1 status might serve as a prognostic marker in NSCLC.

Abstract
Since Ce-doped YAlO3 (YAP(Ce)) scintillators have small non-proportionality, it is useful to develop a radiation imaging detector for low-energy gamma photons or X-rays. However, the YAP(Ce) performance with different Ce concentrations remains unclear. Consequently, we measured the basic performance of YAP(Ce) plates with different Ce concentrations. We used three types of YAP(Ce) scintillator plates with different Ce concentrations: 0.05% Ce, 1% Ce, and 2% Ce. The YAP(Ce) plates were 10 mm × 10 mm x 0.5 mm. We measured and compared the energy spectra, the decay times, the α-γ ratio, and the non-proportionality. We also evaluated the relation between these performances and the Ce concentrations. The light output of a YAP(Ce) showed positive correlation with the Ce concentrations, and the decay time of the YAP(Ce) showed a negative correlation with them. The energy resolution slightly improved for a YAP(Ce) with higher Ce concentrations. We found the α-γ ratio were slightly larger for higher Ce concentrations. The YAP(Ce) plate with a 2% Ce had the highest light output and the best energy resolution as well as the shortest decay time. Based on these results, the YAP(Ce) plate with a concentration of 2% Ce is a better selection for the development of radiation detectors or radiation imaging detectors for low-energy gamma photons or X-rays as well as alpha particles.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between olfactory recognition and morphological changes in olfactory brain regions including the amygdala, hippocampus, rectus, parahippocampus, orbitofrontal cortex, and medial frontal cortex in 27 elderly subjects and 27 younger healthy controls. The specific aim of the study was to determine which brain areas are associated with the initial decline of olfaction in elderly subjects, which occurs before the onset of dementia. All subjects underwent magnetic resonance imaging to measure anatomical brain volume and cortical thickness, and subjects were assessed using tests of olfactory acuity and cognitive function measured with the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. Overall brain volume reductions were observed in elderly subjects compared with young healthy controls, but only reduction in the volume of the left hippocampus was associated with decreased olfactory ability. The parahippocampus of elderly subjects was not different from that of controls; the extent of the reduction of parahippocampus volume varied among individuals, and reduction in this region was associated with olfactory decline. Similarly, parahippocampus thinning was associated with decreased olfactory function. The path analysis showed direct and indirect effects of hippocampus and parahippocampus volume on olfactory ability and that volume reductions in these areas were not associated with cognitive function. Parahippocampus volume reduction and thinning exhibited individual variation; this may be the first appearance of pathological changes and may lead to dysfunction in the connection of olfactory memory to the neocortex. Parahippocampus change may reflect the first sign of olfactory impairment prior to pathological changes in the hippocampus, amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex.

Abstract
A growing number of brain imaging studies show functional connectivity (FC) between regions during emotional and cognitive tasks in humans. However, emotions are accompanied by changes in physiological parameters such as heart rate and respiration. These changes may affect blood oxygen level-dependent signals, as well as connectivity between brain areas. This study aimed to clarify the effects of physiological noise on the connectivity between areas related to the default mode network using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). Healthy adult volunteers (age range: 19–51 years, mean age: 26.9 ± 9.1 years, 8 males and 8 females) underwent rs-fMRI for 10 min using a clinical 3T scanner (MAGNETOM Trio A Tim System, Siemens) with simultaneously recorded respiration and cardiac output. Physiological noise signals were subsequently removed from the acquired fMRI data using the DRIFTER toolbox. Image processing and analysis of the FC between areas related to the default mode network were performed using DPARSF. Network-Based Statistic (NBS) analysis of the functional connectome of the DMN and DMN-related area was used to perform three groups of comparison: without physiological noise correction, with cardiac noise correction, and with cardiac and respiratory noise correction. NBS analysis identified 36 networks with significant differences in three conditions in FC matrices. Post hoc comparison showed no differences between the three conditions, indicating that all three had the same networks. Among the 36 networks, strength of FC of 8 networks was modified under physiological noise correction. Connectivity between left and right anterior medial frontal regions increased strength of connectivity. These areas are located on the medial cerebral hemisphere, close to the sagittal sinus and arteries in the cerebral hemispheres, suggesting that medial frontal areas may be sensitive to cardiac rhythm close to arteries. The other networks observed temporal regions and showed a decrease in their connectivity strength by removing physiological noise, indicating that physiological noise, especially respiration, may be sensitive to BOLD signal in the temporal regions during resting state. Temporal lobe was highly correlated with anxiety-related respiration changes (Masaoka and Homma, 2000), speech processing, and respiratory sensation. These factors may affect the rs-fMRI signaling sensitivity.

Abstract
Cell lines are powerful tools for research into liver function at the molecular level. However, they are generally unsuitable for rigorously assessing the effects of amino acid composition, because many lines require serum-containing medium for their maintenance. Here, we aimed to investigate the effects of ornithine and arginine, which are included in the characteristic metabolic process in hepatocyte, on a human hepatoma-derived cell line (FLC-4) that can be cultured in serum-free medium. FLC-4 cells were cultured under the following three conditions: + ornithine/ – arginine, – ornithine/ – arginine, and –ornithine/ + arginine. Albumin expression evaluated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and showed no obvious differences based on the presence of ornithine or arginine. However, the mRNA levels of two liver-enriched transcription factors (CEBPB and HNF1A), which are involved in regulating albumin expression, were significantly higher in cells grown in medium-containing arginine than that in cells grown in ornithine-containing medium. Western blotting showed that the levels both activating and inhibitory C/EBPβ isoforms were significantly increased in cells grown in arginine medium. Furthermore, we have found that depletion of both ornithine and arginine, the polyamine sources, in the medium did not cause polyamine deficiency. When ornithine and arginine were depleted, albumin production was significantly reduced at the mRNA level, CEBPB mRNA levels were increased, and the level of activating form of C/EBPβ was increased. The results of this study suggest that in hepatocyte, these two amino acids might have different functions, and because of which they elicit disparate cellular responses.
