Abstract
The present study used the DFT method to investigate aspirin's intermolecular interactions with boron nitride (BN) nanotubes modified with aluminum, gallium, and zinc. Our experiments obtained adsorption energy of -40.4 kJ/mol for aspirin on BN nanotubes. By doping each of the above metals on the surface of the BN nanotube, the aspirin adsorption energy increased dramatically. For BN nanotubes doped with Al, Ga, and Zn, this energy was -255, -251, and -250 kJ/mol. Thermodynamic analyses proved that all surface adsorptions are exothermic and spontaneous. Nanotubes' electronic structures and dipole moments have been examined following aspirin adsorption. In addition, AIM analysis has been performed for all systems in order to understand how the links were formed. According to the obtained results, BN nanotubes doped with metals, as mentioned previously, have a very high electron sensitivity to aspirin. These nanotubes can therefore be used to manufacture aspirin-sensitive electrochemical sensors.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Abstract
There is very little knowledge about the immune responses, particularly cellular immunity to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The main objective of this study was to evaluate the frequency of T helper (Th) cell subtypes, including Th1, Th17, and Treg cells, in moderate-to-severe and critical COVID-19 patients compared to healthy controls. Twenty-nine moderate-to-severe and 13 critical patients confirmed for COVID-19, and 15 healthy subjects were included in this study. Interferon-γ (IFN-γ)-producing Th1 and interleukin-17A-producing Th17 and Treg cells in peripheral blood were measured with flow cytometry. The frequency of Th1 and Th17 was significantly decreased in critical patients compared to healthy subjects (aMD: -2.76 and - 2.34) and moderate-to-severe patients (aMD: -1.89 and - 1.89), respectively (p < 0.05). Differences were not significant between moderate-to-severe patients and healthy subjects for both Th1 (p = 0.358) and Th17 (p = 0.535), respectively. In contrast, significant difference was not observed between study subjects regarding the frequency of Treg cells. Patients with critical COVID-19 had a markedly lower Th1/Treg and Th17/Treg ratios compared with the controls and moderate-to-severe cases. Our study showed a dysregulated balance of Th1 and Th17 cells and its relation to the severity of COVID-19.

Abstract
With the global epidemic of the COVID-19 virus, extensive and rapid research on drug therapy is underway around the world. In this regard, one of the most widely studied drugs is Favipiravir. Our aim in this paper is to conduct comprehensive research based on the Density Functional Theory (DFT) on the potential of metallofullerenes as suitable drug carriers. The surface interaction of Favipiravir with organometallic compound resulted by doping of the five transition metals of the first row of the periodic table (Ti, Cr, Cr, Fe, Ni, and Zn) was examined in depth to select the most suitable metallofullerenes. First, the adsorption geometries of Favipiravir drug onto each metallofullerene were deeply investigated. It was found that Cr-, Fe-, and Ni-doped fullerenes provide the excellent adsorbent property with adsorption energies of -148.2, -149.6, and -146.6 kJ/mol, respectively. The Infrared spectroscopy (IR) study was conducted to survey the stretching vibration of bonds involving in the systems, specialty the CO in the drug, CM in the metallofullerene, and MO in the metallofullerene-drug complex. Finally, the UV-vis analysis showed that the absorption spectra for the studied systems may be attributed to the transition from π-π* and/or n-π*.

Abstract
The adsorption behavior of the amino acid, glycine (Gly), via the carboxyl, hydroxyl, and amino groups onto the surfaces of Al12N12 and Al16N16 fullerene-like cages were computationally evaluated by the combination of density functional theory (DFT) and molecular docking studies. It was found that Gly can chemically bond with the Al12N12 and Al16N16 fullerene-like cages as its amino group being more favorable to interact with the aluminum atoms of the adsorbents compared to carboxyl and hydroxyl groups. Oxygen and carbon doping were reported to reduce steric hindrance for Glycine interaction at Al site of Al12ON11/Gly and Al12CN11/Gly complexes. Interaction was further enhanced by oxygen doping due to its greater electron withdrawing effect. Herein, the Al12ON11/Gly complex where two carbonyl groups of Gly are bonded to the aluminum atoms of the Al12N12 fullerene-like cage is the most stable interaction configuration showing ∆adsH and ∆adsG values of -81.74 kcal/mol and -66.21 kcal/mol, respectively. Computational studies also revealed the frequency shifts that occurred due to the interaction process. Molecular docking analysis revealed that the Al12N12/Gly (-11.7 kcal/mol) and the Al12ON11/Gly (-9.2 kcal/mol) complexes have a good binding affinity with protein tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α). TNF-α was implicated as a key cytokine in various diseases, and it has been a validated therapeutic target for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. These results suggest that the Al12N12/Gly complex in comparison with the Al16N16/Gly, Al12ON11/Gly, and the Al12CN11/Gly complexes could be efficient inhibitors of TNF-α.

Abstract
Discharges of dyes-containing wastewater from industries have created global concern. Removal of these substances from aqueous solution is very important and essential. Magnetic chitosan coated with ZIF-8 was prepared successfully and used to eliminate cationic dye malachite green in various conditions. To find the effectiveness of ZIF-8 towards malachite green removal, their surface interaction was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations for the first time which the results show physisorption of malachite green on ZIF-8. The characteristics of adsorbent synthesized were evaluated using XRD, FTIR, FE-SEM, TEM and TGA analysis. In addition, the influence of different parameters on malachite green removal was investigated. The results showed that pH = 7, 40 mg of adsorbent dosage, 10 mg/L initial concentration, 40 min contact time and temperature of 25 °C were obtained as an optimum values for Fe3O4@chitosan@ZIF-8. The equilibrium data were in good agreement with the Langmuir model having maximum capacity (qm) value of 3.282 mg/g. The experimental data revealed that the adsorption process obeyed to pseudo-second order kinetic model. It was concluded that Fe3O4@chitosan@ZIF-8 can be utilized as an efficient and effective adsorbent for removal of toxic malachite green dye from aqueous solution.

1-[2-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxy-5-(4-methoxyphenylazo)benzaldeneamino)ethyl]-3-methyl-3H-imidazole (HMY) and 1-[2-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxy-5-(4-methylphenylazo)benzaldene amino)ethyl]-3-methyl-3H-imidazole (HMM) were synthesized and characterized using spectral analysis. Conformational analysis has been achieved using potential energy scan for different rotable bonds for obtaining the lowest energy conformer. Conformer with minimum energy is obtained along the dihedral angle N30-C31-C34-N37. QTAIM analysis gives nature and strength of hydrogen bonding interactions. UV-Vis, electrostatic potential and chemical descriptors are analyzed. Interaction of HMY and HMM with graphene is analyzed in terms of SERS activity. Chemical reactivity descriptors were investigated for graphene-drug systems. NLO activity of parent drugs and its graphene complexes show good activity. The wavenumber downshift of different modes is noted. Title molecules exhibit inhibitory activity against cytochrome C peroxidase. Interactions with graphene sheets are theoretically predicted for the title compounds.

Abstract
Hydrogels were synthesized by a copolymerization reaction of nanofibrillated cellulose (CNF) with acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM) and N,N-methylene-bis-acrylamide (MBA) as a cross-linker and their absorption performance as a function of composition was determined. Hydrogels with 4% by weight CNF had swelling of about 250 g/g and with 7% CNF about 200 g/g for water. Thermodynamic and kinetic studies of the reaction pathways and the electronic properties of the cellulose and monomers were investigated through density functional theory calculations. Thermodynamic investigations revealed that the radical formation of cellulose that initiates the hydrogel process can occur through the breaking of the homolytic covalent bonds C6-OH and C3-OH. The results show that the reaction of CNF with monomers is thermodynamically favorable in the decreasing order of AM, AA, and MBA. The kinetic study also indicates that the reaction kinetics of CNF with AM is faster than with AA which is much faster than with MBA. Overall, this study has elucidated some of the key chemical characteristics that impact the derivatization of nanocellulose structures to produce advanced renewable bioproducts.

Abstract
The adsorption property of Sumatriptan drug onto graphene oxide (GO) was studied using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. All possible initial positions of drug adsorption were considered to find out which one is energetically favorable. According to the achieved findings, the stronger interactions occurred between the positively polarized parts of the Sumatriptan (i.e. hydrogen atoms of the-OH and -NH parts) and negatively polarized oxygen atoms of the GO. The presence of non-covalent interactions of GO and Sumatriptan was confirmed based on the determined geometrical parameters, electronic structure analysis results, and adsorption energies. Different parameters such as frontier molecular orbital (FMO), natural bond orbital (NBO), dipole moment, and solation energy were investigated. Global indices such as hardness, softness, chemical potential, and electrophilicity of all systems were calculated and compared. The adsorption energy values were determined within the range of -8.39 to -10.59 kcal/mol (-1.87 to -5.67 BSSE corrected) in the water solvent for different adsorption geometries. The obtained results show that GO can act as a promising carrier/sensor for Sumatriptan drug in practical application.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Abstract
The purpose of this article is to evaluate the effect of adsorbents and alkali pre-treatment on microorganism activities of activated sludge (AS) for the treatment of landfill leachate (LFL). The chemical oxygen demand (COD) and BOD5/COD ratio of LFL used in this research were 10,500 and 0.68, respectively. In order to survey the role of porous absorbent, perlite was employed as an alternative with low porosity and was compared to powdered activated carbon (PAC), which has been most widely used in the treatment process. As a result, the COD removal efficiency increased from 32% to 47.7% when alkali LFL was loaded to the sequence batch reactors (SBRs) at the optimum conditions of the biological process. Also, at the same condition, both SBRs containing PAC and perlite showed COD removals of over 81% and 72%, respectively. The specific oxygen uptake rate (SOUR) showed that alkali pre-treatment reduces the toxicity effect of heavy metals on microorganism activities. The adsorption capacity (the uptake of COD) was analyzed by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Further, the kinetic study of COD adsorption during the treatment process demonstrated that the alkali pre-treatment of LFL proceeded faster and was intensified by the presence of adsorbents.

Abstract
Density functional theory (DFT) was used for studying the adsorption of dimethyl ether (DME) onto four nanoclusters: [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text], B and [Formula: see text], P). The interaction energy along with the adsorption energy was investigated, and it was found that DME molecule has higher binding energies upon adsorption on Al-containing clusters, but on the other hand, it results in higher alteration in the electronic structure of B-containing cluster. Outcomes of charge analysis and frontier molecular orbital confirm higher alteration in the electronic structure of the later clusters, suggesting the possible potential of B[Formula: see text]N[Formula: see text] and B[Formula: see text]P[Formula: see text] as two sensitive sensors for DME. Nevertheless, Al-containing clusters showed much better adsorbent property, judging from their higher adsorption energies. The positive values of charge transfer upon DME adsorption confirm the p-type semiconducting property of all these clusters.

Abstract
Landfill leachate contains environmental pollutants that are generally resistant to biodegradation. In this study, indigenous and exogenous bacteria in leachate were acclimated in both biofilm and suspension forms to increase the removal of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD). The bacteria from the leachate and sewage were acclimated to gradually increasing leachate concentration prepared using a reverse osmosis membrane over 28 days. The SCOD removal was measured aerobically or nominally anaerobically. Biofilms were prepared using different carrier media (glass, rubber, and plastic). The maximum SCOD removal in suspensions was 32% (anaerobic) and in biofilms was 39% (aerobic). In the suspension form, SCOD removal using acclimated bacteria from leachate and sewage anaerobically increased in comparison with the control (P < .05). In the biofilm form, the aerobic condition and the use of acclimated bacteria from leachate and sewage increased the removal efficiency of SCOD in comparison with other biofilm groups (P < .05). Three species of bacteria, including Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were identified in the biofilm from leachate and sewage. Bioaugmentation technology using biofilms and acclimations can be an effective, inexpensive, and simple way to decrease SCOD in old landfill leachate.

Abstract
In the present study, by using first-principle study within the density functional theory (DFT), we investigated the ozone (O3) chemisorption on the surface of pristine and nickel-decorated B12P12 nanoclusters. The important emphasis of this study is to follow changes in the electronic structures of the aforementioned nanoclusters upon adsorption of the O3 molecule. Although we found strong chemisorption of O3 on a pristine nanocluster (–282.7 kJ/mol), significant increases in adsorption were found by modifying the nanocluster’s surface. Firstly, we found there are three possible sites on the surface of the nanocluster for nickel (Ni) decoration. For each Ni-decorated nanocluster, we searched its potential for adsorption of O3 by using quantum chemical calculations. Depending on the location of decorated Ni, we found considerable increased values of O3 adsorption energy (–340.8, –376.8, and –382.4 kJ/mol). We carried out calculations by taking into account the values of adsorption energy, bond distance, dipole moment study, charge analysis, frontier orbital analysis, and density of states of all relaxed systems.

Abstract
The co-treatment system of photosynthetic microalgae Chlorella vulgaris and adsorption was investigated as a possible combination of symbiotic mixed culture for the simultaneous removal of nutrients (ammonium and phosphate) and organic contaminants. In this study, response surface methodology for experimental design and optimization was used. For experiment operation, two factorial designs containing five chemical oxygen demand influent (CODin) concentrations (100, 200, 400, 600 and 700 mg l-1) and hydraulic retention times (0.63, 1, 1.75, 2.5 and 2.88 d) were applied. The co-treatment system performed successfully in removing both nutrients (nitrogen and phosphate) and COD, showing around 88%, 75% and 48% removal for the maximum level, respectively. The adsorption-photobioreactor (APBR) displayed superior performance of the microalgae growth rate compared to the photobioreactor. Also, the adsorption capacity (the uptake of COD) has been analysed with the first-order equation. The results showed that the experimental data of the APBR fit well with the model.

Abstract
ABSTRACT: The development of synthesis routes for oxide nanoparticles is a matter of considerable topical attention. Green synthesis of nanoparticles with the help of microorganisms as reducing agents is an efficient, cost effective, fast and eco-friendly in nature. This paper presents a simple technique to synthesize magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles. In this routine, an aqueous solution of ferrous and ferric salts was mixed with Magnetospirillum and heated for 10 minutes at 70℃. UV–vis absorption spectra, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) have been used to illustrate the form process and explain the structure of the magnetite nanoparticles. UV–Vis absorption spectrum showed surface plasmon resonance absorption bands about 240 nm that confirmed magnetite nanoparticles existence. We obtain magnetite nanoparticles of size 42±20 nm after separation and washing procedures by dynamic light scattering (DLS).

Abstract
Determination of fouling mechanisms and accurate quantitative prediction of nano-porous membrane behavior are of great interest in membrane processes. This work has focused on a comprehensive comparison of two classical and new fouling models. Different operational conditions were tested to analyze the level of agreement of these models with experimental observation. Whey solutions of 8, 0.8 and 0.5 g/L were ultrafiltered in transmembrane pressures (TMPs) of 300 and 500 KPa through a synthesized polyethersulfone/copolymer blend membrane. Fouling mechanisms and the effect of different combinations of TMPs and protein concentrations were determined and analyzed by fitting the experimental data to different models. Based on the results obtained from classical models, it was found that the predictions of the cake layer formation model were quite acceptable, followed by the intermediate blocking model. The new combined pore blockage-cake filtration model, however, was found to be very successful in predicting the flux decline over time for every operational condition tested, with all relative errors of prediction less than 5%. The latter also showed a good performance in the transition from the pore blockage mechanism to cake layer formation.

Abstract
In this paper, genetic algorithm was used to investigate mathematical modeling of ethanol fermentation in a continuous conventional bioreactor (CCBR) and a continuous membrane bioreactor (CMBR) by ethanol permselective polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane. A lab scale CMBR with medium glucose concentration of 100gL(-1) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae microorganism was designed and fabricated. At dilution rate of 0.14h(-1), maximum specific cell growth rate and productivity of 0.27h(-1) and 6.49gL(-1)h(-1) were respectively found in CMBR. However, at very high dilution rate, the performance of CMBR was quite similar to conventional fermentation on account of insufficient incubation time. In both systems, genetic algorithm modeling of cell growth, ethanol production and glucose concentration were conducted based on Monod and Moser kinetic models during each retention time at unsteady condition. The results showed that Moser kinetic model was more satisfactory and desirable than Monod model.
