Experience and expression of anger among Australian prisoners and the relationship between anger and reintegration variables

We examined the experience and expression of anger among a group of Australian prisoners prior to and following prison release, as well as the relationship between anger and several reintegration variables. Participants were 79 adult prisoners (54 male, 25 female) who completed the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI-2) 1 month prior to release and again at 1 to 4 weeks and 3 to 4 months post-release. A postrelease questionnaire was also administered at the two postrelease points focusing on the quality of life conditions experienced following release. Mean state and trait anger scores were significantly higher at pre-release than post-release. As well, higher levels of anger expression and anger control were reported at pre-release compared with post-release. Higher age was related to lower state anger at post-release, whereas several variables were related to trait anger at post-release. Theoretical implications for reintegration theory are discussed, together with practical applications.

Recidivism among participants of an employment assistance program for prisoners and offenders

Recidivism outcomes were examined over a 2-year postrelease period for participants of an Australian employment assistance program. The voluntary 12-month program operated from 17 Victorian correctional locations, 7 prisons, and 10 community corrections locations, targeting participants at moderate to high risk of reoffending. Recidivism outcomes included simple rates of reoffending for the whole program (N = 3,034 registered participants) and analyses of rate and seriousness of reoffending and extent of poly-offending for a random sample of 600 program participants and 600 nonparticipants. Offending among program participants' pre- and post-registration was also investigated. Results showed a very low rate of reoffending (7.46%) for the entire program participant group while engaged in the program. As well, program participants had significantly lower levels of recidivism than nonparticipants, and postregistration offending was significantly lower than preregistration offending. Findings indicate that long-term postrelease employment support programs provide positive benefits in terms of reduced reoffending.

The life conditions of Australian ex-prisoners: an analysis of intrapersonal, subsistence, and support conditions

Successful reintegration of ex-prisoners into the community is multifaceted. The life conditions of 36 adult Australian ex-prisoners (20 male and 16 female) were examined via a questionnaire administered at 1 to 4 weeks post release, and a subset of 19 of the original respondents were interviewed again at 3 to 4 months post release. Interviews focused on intrapersonal conditions (physical and psychological health and substance use), subsistence conditions (housing, employment, and finance), and support conditions (social support, support services/program participation, and criminal justice support). The majority of ex-prisoners self-reported chronic physical and mental health problems as well as a history of substance use and/or current substance use. Although the housing conditions of ex-prisoners were largely favourable and constant, the employment and financial conditions of this group were generally unfavourable. Level of social support was variable. Theoretical implications and practical applications of the present investigation for reintegration theory are discussed.

Analysis of the stages of change model of drug and alcohol treatment readiness among prisoners

A classification and regression tree (CART) analysis was applied to data for 237 male participants (M = 31.93 years, SD = 7.64) in a prison-based substance abuse treatment program to study the integrity of the Stages of Change model of treatment readiness. Using the Stages of Change Questionnaire (STOCQ), participants were assigned to Contemplation (102), Action (118), or Maintenance (17) groups. A CART analysis then examined differences in the overall group profiles on the basis of scores on the Psychological Inventory of Criminal Thinking, the Situational Confidence Questionnaire, and the Carlson Psychological Survey. The assumption of discrete stages of change was not supported. Alternative models are suggested: one based on states of change and one on personality characteristics. A focus on equal attention to both cognitive and behavioral aspects of substance abuse treatment readiness is suggested.

The effect of organisational context variables on employer attitudes toward employability of ex-offenders

The authors tested the premise that organisational context variables (i.e., size of organisation, industry type, location, and respondent's position in organisation) had significant effects on employer (N = 596) attitudes toward employability of ex-offenders. They also examined whether organisational context variables had an equivalent effect on employer attitudes to that of job-seeker criminal history and employer personal characteristics (e.g., respondent age and gender). Using linear regression (HLM 6.02a), organisational context variables were shown to have a significant effect on employer attitudes. In addition, organisational context variables had a significantly greater effect on employer attitudes than did employer personal characteristics. However, job-seeker criminal history contributed more to respondent ratings of ex-offender employability than did organisational context variables. The finding that judgements of employability are influenced by organisational context variables has implications for future research relevant to reintegration. Stakeholder attitudes toward the reintegration success of ex-offenders may be generally influenced by context variables.

The relationship between emotional state and success in community reintegration for ex-prisoners

This study examines the role of emotional state in the reintegration of ex-prisoners. Participants were 101 adult prisoners (72 male, 29 female) who completed a questionnaire 1 month prior to their release and at two postrelease points focusing, first, on prison-related experiences and, second, on the quality of life conditions experienced following release. The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) and the Beck Anxiety Inventory were also completed at each interview. Results indicate that mean BDI-II scores were significantly higher at prerelease than postrelease, while mean anxiety scores were unchanged over the period under investigation. There are significant relationships between numerous reintegration variables and emotional state following release. At each postrelease point, lower depression and anxiety among participants were related to higher age and improved psychological health. Higher depression and anxiety were related to participation in a postrelease program. Theoretical implications for reintegration theory are discussed, together with practical applications.

Community reintegration of ex-prisoners: type and degree of change in variables influencing successful reintegration

Community reintegration of ex-prisoners is an important issue in efforts to reduce recidivism. The present study examined the multiple, complex, and dynamic nature of variables influencing successful reintegration by assessing the type and degree of change in reintegration variables over time. Participants were 79 adult prisoners (54 male, 25 female) who completed a prerelease questionnaire 1 month before their release, which focused on prison-related variables, participant background, and anticipated conditions upon release. A postrelease questionnaire was administered to the same participants at 1-4 weeks and 3-4 months postrelease, focusing on the quality of life conditions experienced following release. Results indicate that current health ratings and several indicators of drug use were significantly different over the three measurement phases. Ratings of employment and housing stability, finance, and social support were unchanged over the postrelease period. Theoretical implications of the present investigation for reintegration theory are discussed, together with practical applications.

The perceived employability of ex-prisoners and offenders

A large-scale study was conducted to examine the perceived employability of ex-prisoners and offenders. Four participant groups comprising 596 (50.4%) employers, 234 (19.8%) employment service workers, 176 (14.9%) corrections workers, and 175 (14.8%) prisoners and offenders completed a questionnaire assessing the likelihood of a hypothetical job seeker's both obtaining and maintaining employment; the importance of specific skills and characteristics to employability; and the likelihood that ex-prisoners, offenders, and the general workforce exhibit these skills and characteristics. Apart from people with an intellectual or psychiatric disability, those with a criminal background were rated as being less likely than other disadvantaged groups to obtain and maintain employment. In addition, ex-prisoners were rated as being less likely than offenders and the general workforce to exhibit the skills and characteristics relevant to employability. Implications for the preparation and support of ex-prisoners and offenders into employment are discussed, together with broader community-wide initiatives to promote reintegration.

Visual perception of movement kinematics and the acquisition of "action prototypes"

Recognizing a class of movements as belonging to a "nominal" action category, such as walking, running, or throwing, is a fundamental human ability. Three experiments were undertaken to test the hypothesis that common ("prototypical") features of moving displays could be learned by observation. Participants viewed moving stick-figure displays resembling forearm flexion movements in the sagittal plane. Four displays (presentation displays) were first presented in which one or more movement dimensions were combined with 2 respective cues: direction (up, down), speed (fast, slow), and extent (long, short). Eight test displays were then shown, and the observer indicated whether each test display was like or unlike those previously seen. The results showed that without corrective feedback, a single cue (e.g., up or down) could be correctly recognized, on average, with the proportion correct between .66 and .87. When two cues were manipulated (e.g., up and slow), recognition accuracy remained high, ranging between .72 and .89. Three-cue displays were also easily identified. These results provide the first empirical demonstration of action-prototype learning for categories of human action and show how apparently complex kinematic patterns can be categorized in terms of common features or cues. It was also shown that probability of correct recognition of kinematic properties was reduced when the set of 4 presentation displays were more variable with respect to their shared kinematic property, such as speed or amplitude. Finally, while not conclusive, the results (from 2 of the 3 experiments) did suggest that similarity (or "likeness") with respect to a common kinematic property (or properties) is more easily recognized than dissimilarity.

Visual perception of action categories and the "bowl-throw" decision in cricket

Cricket umpires, cricket bowlers, and physical education students (who were knowledgeable about the rules of cricket), were shown 72 videotaped point-light displays of cricket deliveries with varying extents of elbow flexion such that they ranged from highly "bowl-like" to highly "throw-like". The observers made a bowl-throw decision about each display, and the umpires and bowlers reported their confidence on a 5-point scale. The percentage of displays reported as a "bowl" was 59, 40, and 44 for the umpires, bowlers, and students respectively. Umpires made significantly more bowl decisions than both the bowlers and students, but there was no difference between the latter groups. Umpires were significantly more confident than the bowlers in both their bowl and throw decisions. Thus, in an experimental setting, with no apparent costs or benefits associated with their decision-making, umpires "called" a bowler significantly less frequently for throwing than other knowledgeable observers. The procedures devised for this experiment demonstrate that psychophysical methods can be applied to the problem of discrete action-category nominations in sport (e.g., bowl or throw, walk or run).

Visual perception of human activity and gender in biological-motion displays by individuals with mental retardation

By examining perception of biological-motion in three experiments, we investigated whether limitations in perceptual ability by individuals with mental retardation may extend to learning perceptual categories based on elements of actions. In two experiments individuals with mental retardation and age- and gender-matched controls reported gender and activity in randomly ordered point-light displays. In Experiment 2 decision times were measured and in Experiment 3, the effect of training with feedback on discriminating gender was assessed. Individuals with mental retardation identified walking, running, and stair-climbing without error but were less proficient in identifying throwing, had slower decision times for activity identification, and could not identify gender. For both groups feedback training improved gender identification in the short- and long-term. Improvements represented above-chance responding for the retarded group. Experimental outcomes are discussed in terms of capacity to classify perceptual stimuli as actions.

Recognition of facial emotional expressions from moving and static displays by individuals with mental retardation

Moving and static videotaped and photographic displays of posed emotional expressions were presented to 12 adults with mental retardation and 12 without mental retardation to investigate the role of movement in the recognition of facial expressions of emotion. Participants chose the corresponding emotion portrayed by the displays from among six written and pictorial labels of the emotions. Results indicated that individuals with mental retardation were significantly poorer at identifying anger, fear, disgust, and surprise. Both groups performed significantly better on the moving as opposed to the static videotaped displays of the emotions sad and angry. Visual-perceptual limitations are likely contributors to the poorer performance of the group with mental retardation in recognizing moving and static facial expressions of emotion.

Visual discrimination and motor reproduction of movement by individuals with mental retardation

Visual discrimination and motor reproduction tasks involving computer-simulated arm movements were administered to 12 adults with mental retardation and a gender-matched control group to examine whether inadequacies in visual perception account for the poorer motor performance of individuals with mental retardation. In the discrimination phase subjects judged whether simulated arm movements were either of greater or lesser extent or shorter or longer in duration, respectively, than those of a standard display. In the reproduction phase accuracy in reproducing the movement in the standard display was measured. Results indicate that error in discriminating extent and duration was significantly greater for the individuals with mental retardation, who were also less accurate and more variable in matching the extent and duration of the standard displays. These outcomes implicate both perceptual and motor-reproduction inadequacies in skill acquisition for these individuals.

Constraints on the participation of individuals with mental retardation in mainstream recreation

A questionnaire was designed to investigate the influence of skill level, behavioral characteristics, and labeling upon attitudes toward the participation of individuals with mental retardation in a recreation activity. The respondents were 320 members of 12 private tennis clubs. High multiple correlations between the predictor variables, attitude toward the behavior, and subjective norm, with behavioral intention supported the model of the theory of reasoned action. Attitudes, subjective norms, and behavioral intentions toward individuals with mental retardation were favorable regardless of the label assigned and perceived skill level. Perceived behavior of the target person, rather than skill level and label, was the more salient influence upon attitudes, subjective norms, and behavioral intentions.

Intelligence and motor skill acquisition by discrimination learning

This experiment investigated the relation between intelligence and acquisition of motor skill using predictions from Zeaman and House's 1963 attention theory. 20 undergraduate students and 20 subjects of low IQ (WAIS-R Full Scale IQ range 50 to 73, M = 60) made linear positioning movements of long and short amplitude to the left and right of a central starting position. Four conditions (right-long, right-short, left-long, left-short) were created by specifying the corresponding target area on the positioning apparatus. One or both of the paired cues were varied, i.e., left, right, long, or short, while the dimensions of direction and amplitude remained unchanged across conditions. A shift from one condition to the next followed a criterion response of four consecutive movements to the target area. Results supported the hypothesis that subjects of low IQ would require more trials to criterion than subjects of normal IQ across all conditions of direction and extent. There was qualified support for the hypothesised interaction between intelligence and cue shifts. The practical implications and theoretical significance of these findings are discussed.
