Abstract
OBJECTIVES Understanding who uses internet-based sexually transmitted and blood-borne infection (STBBI) services can inform programme implementation, particularly among those most impacted by STBBIs, including gender and sexual minority (GSM) men. GetCheckedOnline, an internet-based STBBI testing service in British Columbia, Canada, launched in 2014. Our objectives were to assess reach, identify factors associated with use of GetCheckedOnline 5 years into implementation and describe reasons for using and not using GetCheckedOnline among GSM men. METHODS The Sex Now 2019 Survey was an online, cross-sectional survey of GSM men in Canada administered from November 2019 to February 2020. Participants were asked a subset of questions related to use of GetCheckedOnline. Multivariable binary logistic regression modelling was used to estimate associations between correlates and use of GetCheckedOnline. RESULTS Of 431 British Columbia (BC) participants aware of GetCheckedOnline, 27.6% had tested using the service. Lower odds of having used GetCheckedOnline were found among participants with non-white race/ethnicity (adjusted OR (aOR)=0.41 (95% CI 0.21 to 0.74)) and those living with HIV (aOR=0.23 (95% CI 0.05 to 0.76)). Those who usually tested at a walk-in clinic, relative to a sexual health clinic, had greater odds of using GetCheckedOnline (aOR=3.91 (95% CI 1.36 to 11.61)). The most commonly reported reason for using and not using GetCheckedOnline was convenience (78%) and only accessing the website to see how the service worked (48%), respectively. CONCLUSION Over a quarter of GSM men in BC aware of GetCheckedOnline had used it. Findings demonstrate the importance of social/structural factors related to use of GetCheckedOnline. Service promotion strategies could highlight its convenience and privacy benefits to enhance uptake.

Abstract
Developmental and lifespan examinations of methamphetamine use among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) remain limited. We used a feminist trauma framework to examine potential links between childhood trauma, trauma-related stressors, and methamphetamine use among GBM. From June 2018 to October 2018, semi-structured interviews (N = 33) were conducted with GBM across British Columbia. Interviews focused on sexual experiences, support services, and methamphetamine use. Using thematic analysis, two overarching trauma-related themes were identified: developmental and insidious trauma and coping with trauma-related stressors. GBM's methamphetamine use co-occurred with childhood experiences of family- and peer-perpetrated heterosexism, childhood sexual abuse, and intersecting forms of oppression/marginalization. These experiences manifested as internalized shame, interpersonal anxiety, and low self-esteem. In adulthood, participants reported difficulty managing emotions, low self-confidence, and loneliness. GBM reported using methamphetamine to manage negative emotions, life stressors, and overcome barriers to interpersonal connection. Findings indicate a need for trauma-informed interventions that address underlying issues and help GBM cultivate supportive relationships.

Abstract
The present work explored the use of Tunisian olive-waste cakes, a by-product of the manufacture process of olive oil in mills, as a potential feedstock for the preparation of activated carbon. Chemical activation of this precursor, using phosphoric acid as dehydrating agent, was adopted. To optimize the preparation method, the effect of the main process parameters (such as acid concentration, impregnation ratio, temperature of pyrolysis step) on the performances of the obtained activated carbons (expressed in terms of iodine and methylene blue numbers and specific surface area) was studied. The optimal activated carbon was fully characterized considering its adsorption properties as well as its chemical structure and morphology. To enhance the adsorption capacity of this carbon for heavy metals, a modification of the chemical characteristics of the sorbent surface was performed, using KMnO(4) as oxidant. The efficiency of this treatment was evaluated considering the adsorption of Cu(2+) ions as a model for metallic species. Column adsorption tests showed the high capacity of the activated carbon to reduce KMnO(4) into insoluble manganese (IV) oxide (MnO(2)) which impregnated the sorbent surface. The results indicated also that copper uptake capacity was enhanced by a factor of up to 3 for the permanganate-treated activated carbon.

Abstract
The use of natural adsorbent such as phosphate rock to replace expensive imported synthetic adsorbent is particularly appropriate for developing countries such as Tunisia. In this study, the removal characteristics of lead, cadmium, copper and zinc ions from aqueous solution by activated phosphate rock were investigated under various operating variables like contact time, solution pH, initial metal concentration and temperature. The kinetic and the sorption process of these metal ions were compared for phosphate rock (PR) and activated phosphate rock (APR). To accomplish this objective we have: (a) characterized both (PR) and (APR) using different techniques (XRD, IR) and analyses (EDAX, BET-N(2)); and, (b) qualified and quantified the interaction of Pb(2+), Cd(2+), Cu(2+) and Zn(2+) with these sorbents through batch experiments. Initial uptake of these metal ions increases with time up to 1h for (PR) and 2h for (APR), after then, it reaches equilibrium. The maximum sorption obtained for (PR) and (APR) is between pH 2 and 3 for Pb(2+) and 4 and 6 for Cd(2+), Cu(2+) and Zn(2+). The effect of temperature has been carried out at 10, 20 and 40 degrees C. The data obtained from sorption isotherms of metal ions at different temperatures fit to linear form of Langmuir sorption equation. The heat of sorption (DeltaH degrees), free energy (DeltaG degrees) and change in entropy (DeltaS degrees) were calculated. They show that sorption of Pb(2+), Cd(2+), Cu(2+) and Zn(2+) on (PR) and (APR) an endothermic process. These findings are significant for future using of (APR) for the removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater under realistic competitive conditions in terms of initial heavy metals, concentrations and pH.

Abstract
In the present work, the abilities of sewage sludge and pomace ashes to remove copper (Cu(2+)) ions from aqueous solutions are compared. Batch adsorption experiments were performed in order to evaluate the removal efficiency of these materials. Effect of contact time, solution pH, ash concentration and temperature on the removal of Cu(2+) was investigated. The results of batch equilibrium studies showed that the solution pH was the key factor affecting the adsorption characteristics. In general, the amount of Cu removed increased as the solid concentration and pH increased, and then it remained constant over a wide pH region. The adsorption test of applying sewage sludge and pomace ashes into synthetic wastewater revealed that the adsorption data of these materials for copper ions were better fitted to the Langmuir isotherm since the correlation coefficients for the Langmuir isotherm were higher than that for the Freundlich isotherm. The estimated maximum capacities of copper adsorbed by sewage sludge and pomace ashes were 5.71 and 6.98 mg g(-1), respectively. Experimental results indicated that the adsorption was favorable at higher pH and higher temperature. Values of DeltaG degrees ranging from -4.64 to -5.13 kcal mol(-1) for sewage sludge ash and from -4.97 to -5.53 kcal mol(-1) for pomace ash suggest that the adsorption reaction is a physical process enhanced by the electrostatic effect. The values of DeltaH degrees and DeltaS degrees are, respectively, 4.27 kcal mol(-1) and 30.6 cal K(-1)mol(-1) for sewage sludge ash and 4.33 kcal mol(-1) and 31.3 cal K(-1)mol(-1) for pomace ash. The mechanisms of copper removal by these materials included adsorption and precipitation. The sewage sludge and pomace ashes are shown to be effective adsorbents for this metal.

Abstract
New filtration materials covered with metallic oxides are good adsorbents for both cation and anion forms of pollutants. Sfax is one of the most important industrial towns in Tunisia. Its phosphate manufacture in particular is causing considerable amounts of water pollution. Therefore, there is a need to find out a new way of getting rid of this excessive phosphate from water. This work is aimed to examining the potential of three sorbent materials (synthetic iron oxide coated sand (SCS), naturally iron oxide coated sand (NCS) and iron oxide coated crushed brick (CB)) for removing phosphate ions from aqueous solutions. According to our literature survey CB was not used as adsorbent previously. Phosphate ions are used here as species model for the elimination of other similar pollutants (arsenates, antimonates). Optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses were used to investigate the surface properties and morphology of the coated sorbents. Infra-red spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques were also used to characterize the sorbent structures. Results showed that iron coated crushed brick possess more micro pores and a higher surface area owing to its clay nature. The comparative sorption of PO4(3-) from aqueous solutions by SCS, CB and NCS was investigated by batch experiments. The estimated optimum pH of phosphate ion retention for the considered sorbents was 5. The equilibrium data were analysed using the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The sorption capacities of PO(4)3- at pH 5 were 1.5 mg/g for SCS, 1.8 mg/g for CB and 0.88 mg/g for NCS. The effect of temperature on sorption phenomenon was also investigated. The results indicated that adsorption is an endothermic process for phosphate ions removal. This study demonstrates that all the considered sorbents can be used as an alternative emerging technology for water treatment without any side effect or treatment process alteration.

Abstract
During the last ten years, interest concerning the occurrence of bromate in drinking water has grown due to its potential carcinogenicity and the new regulations. One source of bromate in finished water is due to its presence in the sodium hypochlorite solutions used for the disinfection of water. In fact, the brine solutions used for the production of sodium hypochlorite contain bromide ions in varying degrees that subsequently generate a certain quantity of bromate ions. Bromate concentrations ranging from 82 to 857 mg l(-1) (0.5-7.4 mg BrO3-/ g Cl2) have been found in commercial solutions of sodium hypochlorite used by Société Anonyme Gestion des Eaux de Paris (SAGEP), a company that produces drinking water for Paris, France. In addition, the chlorine concentration of the hypochlorite solution can decrease during storage, consequently the added amount of bromate increases for a given applied dose of chlorine.

Abstract
The titration of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) by bioluminescence permits rapid evaluation of the quantity of viable micro-organisms present in a water sample. During two sampling campaigns, Société Anonyme de Gestion des Eaux de Paris (SAGEP) tested a new extraction and titration system of bacterial ATP in the Paris drinking water distribution network. As far as the entire set of results of analyses of water in the network is concerned there is a linear relationship between log [ATP] and log(HPC-R2A/ml). Furthermore, as regards the drinking water originating from treatment of surface waters, some of the results obtained indicate a slight change as regards the Paris network in the microbiological quality. This is certainly linked to the distance travelled from the production location as well as to a reservoir effect observed on a site. Conversely, no change is apparent with regard to waters of underground origin. Lastly, despite changes in temperature and chlorine residual, no significant influence has been observed, essentially because of the very low density of culturable bacteria.

Abstract
Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) followed by gas chromatography (GC) coupled with an electron capture detector has been applied for the analysis of chlorinated pesticides in water. Molecule adsorption on 100 microm polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) fibers was activated by immersion of the whole fiber-sample system in an ultrasonic bath. The good reproducibility, low detection limits and wide linear ranges obtained encourage the use of this technique in water control.

Abstract
Mortality rates for coronary artery disease are greater in elderly patients. Although prodromal angina occurring shortly before an acute myocardial infarction (MI) has protective effects against ischemia, this effect has not been well documented in older patients. This study investigated whether angina 1 week before a first MI provides protection in this group of patients. A total of 290 consecutive elderly (>64 years old, n = 143) and adult patients (<65 years old, n = 147) with a first MI were examined to assess the effect of preceding angina on the short- and long-term prognosis. Elderly patients with a history of prodromal angina were less likely than those without angina to experience in-hospital death, heart failure, or the combined end point of in-hospital death and heart failure (6% vs 20.4%, p = 0.02; 10% vs 23.7%, p = 0.07; 14% vs 32.3%, p = 0.01, respectively). Left ventricular function was more frequently depressed (ejection fraction <40%) in elderly patients without (44.8%) than with (26%, p = 0.04) preinfarction angina, and the incidence of arrhythmias (complete heart block and ventricular fibrillation) was greater in the former group (16.1% vs 4%, p = 0.03). Multivariate analysis confirmed that the presence of preinfarction angina was an independent predictor of in-hospital death and heart failure in older patients (odds ratio 0.28, p = 0.009). The occurrence of angina 1 week before a first MI may confer protection against in-hospital adverse outcomes, and may preserve left ventricular function in older patients.

Abstract
Left ventricular outflow tract pseudoaneurysm is an uncommon but potentially catastrophic complication of aortic valve surgery, aortic valve endocarditis or chest trauma. We describe a case of a left ventricular outflow tract pseudoaneurysm 1 month after an aortic valve replacement that caused a systolic compression of mitral valve and a severe regurgitation. The diagnosis was confirmed using transoesophageal echocardiography, magnetic resonance image and intraoperative endoscopy. Surgical repair of the pseudoaneurysm corrected the mitral regurgitation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Different studies have shown a relationship between an insertion-deletion polymorphism of the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) gene and the risk of ischemic heart disease, although there are no data on this association in the Spanish population. MATERIALS AND METHOD We have studied three groups of patients: I, healthy volunteers (n = 56, mean age 36.20 +/- 4.20 years); II, patients having presented an acute myocardial infarction (MI) < or = 50 years (n = 59, mean age 42.30 +/- 5.30 years), and III, patients with MI over the age of 50 years (n = 60, mean age 66.36 +/- 9.47 years). In all patients the genotype ACE gen was determined by an assay based on the polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS The distribution of the ACE genotype between the three groups were not significative. Comparing the ratio of DD/II-DI in groups II and III there were 26/33 versus 15/45 (p = 0.02864). There was no difference in the smoking, hypercholesterolemia and hypertension between groups II and III; there were only differences in familial history of ischemic heart disease; diabetes mellitus was more prevalent in the III group. A multivariate analysis showed that smoking familial history of ichemic heart disease, hypercholesterolemia and DD genotype were more prevalent in young patients (OR 3.92, 2.85, 2.36 and 1.77), whereas diabetes mellitus was more prevalent in the group of older patients. There were no differences in the ACE genotype with respect to infarct location or gender. CONCLUSIONS In our population DD ACE genotype is associated with MI in young patients, although smoking, family history and hypercholesterolemia show a more powerful association.

Abstract
The developmental pattern of jicama (Pachyrhizus erosus (L.) Urban) was studied by sampling plants aged 20 to 36 weeks at weekly intervals. There was an increase in all characteristics of foliage: fresh and dry weight, number of leaves per plant, main stem length, number of leaves, nodes and internodes of the main stem; and in all root characteristics: fresh and dry weight, diameter and length. The chemical analysis was determined for roots at different plant ages. The range values for dry matter were 16.19-22.28%, protein 1.11-1.62%, fat 0.553-0.867%, crude fiber 0.3048-0.3943%, and ash 0.669-1.089%. The chemical constituents fluctuated with age but without specific trends. These values are considered the first record of roots produced by plants grown in Mexico.

Abstract
Ozone and chlorine dioxide present definite advantages and disadvantages over chlorination. Chlorination, particularly for the removal of ammonia and the maintenance of a disinfectant residual in the distribution system has decisive advantages and will be difficult to replace. Ozone and chlorine dioxide seem to produce fewer carcinogenic by-products but the risk for acute toxicity, especially from the chlorites which follow chlorine dioxide, is higher than with chlorine. Chlorine dioxide and more particularly ozone should be considered as useful complements to chlorination, but no strong oxidative treatment should be applied before most of the organic matter has been removed.
