Abstract
BACKGROUND Exercise may have beneficial effects in MS, remaining controversial its possible disease-modifying effects and which mechanisms might be involved. We evaluated whether exercise-induced lymphocyte redistribution differ in MS patients as compared to controls. METHODS Exercise was assessed in 12 relapsing-remitting MS patients and 11 controls in a cycle ergometer, obtaining blood samples before exercise, at maximal exercise capacity (T1), and after resting (T2). Peripheral lymphocytes were evaluated by flow cytometry, assessing chemokine receptor expression to study cell trafficking properties. RESULTS Lymphocyte subsets in all cases increased after exercise and decreased at resting. However, total natural killer (NK) cells in patients as compared to controls had a lower exercise-induced redeployment at T1 (696 ± 581 cells/µL vs.1502 ± 641 cells/µL, p < 0.01). Evaluating NK cell subsets, CD56bright NK cells numbers decreased in peripheral blood in MS patients after resting (T2), contrasting with values remaining above baseline in healthy controls. NK cells mobilized after exercise at T1 in controls, as compared to patients, had a higher CX3CR1 expression (1402 ± 564/µL vs. 615 ± 548 cell//µL, p < 0.01). CONCLUSION Exercise-induced redeployment of NK cells may be reduced in MS patients, as well as their migration capabilities, pointing to potential immunological mechanisms to be enhanced by exercise training programs.

Abstract
An essential prerequisite to safeguard pollinator species is characterisation of the multifaceted diversity of crop pollinators and identification of the drivers of pollinator community changes across biogeographical gradients. The extent to which intensive agriculture is associated with the homogenisation of biological communities at large spatial scales remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated diversity drivers for 644 bee species/morphospecies in 177 commercial apple orchards across 33 countries and four global biogeographical biomes. Our findings reveal significant taxonomic dissimilarity among biogeographical zones. Interestingly, despite this dissimilarity, species from different zones share similar higher-level phylogenetic groups and similar ecological and behavioural traits (i.e. functional traits), likely due to habitat filtering caused by perennial monoculture systems managed intensively for crop production. Honey bee species dominated orchard communities, while other managed/manageable and wild species were collected in lower numbers. Moreover, the presence of herbaceous, uncultivated open areas and organic management practices were associated with increased wild bee diversity. Overall, our study sheds light on the importance of large-scale analyses contributing to the emerging fields of functional and phylogenetic diversity, which can be related to ecosystem function to promote biodiversity as a key asset in agroecosystems in the face of global change pressures.

Abstract
Social and academic interest in animal abuse has recently increased thanks to greater awareness of the importance of biodiversity in promoting sustainability. The redefinition of human-animal relationships, in the context of the fight against speciesism and the defense of veganism, has also contributed to this greater attention. Moreover, public awareness of animal rights has strengthened social reactions to violence against animals, though there are still some social sectors that are indifferent to these changes. Thus, better knowledge of the psychological mechanisms underlying reactions to animal abuse could contribute to better informal, social control of such abuse. The main aim of this study is to analyze the relationships between psychopathy, empathy with people, and empathy with nature arising from people's reactions to protected and domestic animal abuse and illegal dumping. Also, as previous studies have shown differences between men and women, both in animal abuse and in personality traits, thus gender is taken into account when analyzing these relationships. A total of 409 people, resident in a highly environmentally protected territory, participated in this study. They were aged between 18 and 82 years old and 49.9% women. Participants were asked about assigned punishments, as well as the probability of intervening personally and/or calling the police, in relation to ten scenarios, based on press releases, describing one of three types of transgression of environmental laws: abuse of protected animals, abuse of domestic animals or illegal dumping. They also responded to Spanish adaptations of the Inventory of Callous Unemotional Traits, the Basic Empathy Scale, the Dispositional Empathy with Nature Scale, and the Social Desirability Scale. Each participant was randomly given ten scenarios corresponding to just one transgression type but all the personality scales. Results show that people's reactions were greater for abuse of domestic than protected animals or for illegal dumping, irrespective of gender. Empathy with nature was related to the reaction against animal abuse more than empathy with people and psychopathy. Results are discussed highlighting the need for future research into similarities and differences between animal abuse and other types of environmental offences, which have many victims but no single being suffering.

Abstract
Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the most prevalent respiratory diseases in the world. In 2020 there were at least 9.9 million new infections, with 1.5 million deaths. Approximately 10% of people infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis develop the disease during the first 2 to 5 years after infection. In South America, the diagnosis of Latent Tuberculosis Infections (LTBI) continues to be performed through the Mantoux tuberculin skin test (TST). Objective: The objective of our study was to compare the sensitivity of a new immunofluorescence IGRA test against a widely available IGRA kit on the market. Material and method: Close contact with infectious TB patients, HIV patients, or immunocompromised for another cause were recruited. Two interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) diagnostic kits were used and compared with TST. Results: 76 patients were recruited, 93.42% were Chilean nationality, and 98.68% of the patients did not have immunosuppression. The sensitivity of the new technique was 88.89%, and the specificity was 92.50% in the study population compared to the IGRA previously used. In the subgroup older than 36 years, the sensitivity was 95.65%, and the specificity was 89.47%. Conclusion: IGRA techniques are a new resource in clinical laboratories to make an accurate diagnosis of LTBI in the region of the Americas. In our population, the greatest benefit of this new IGRA would be observed in people over 36 years of age, where the sensitivity of the technique was like that of the currently available test.

Abstract
Purpose:Tau hyperphosphorylation is a modification frequently observed after brain ischemia which has been related to the aggregation of this protein, with subsequent cytoskeletal damage, and cellular toxicity. The present study tests the hypothesis of using glucosamine, an agent that increases protein O-GlcNAcylation, to decrease the levels of phosphorylation in Tau during ischemia-reperfusion.Material and methods: Transient focal ischemia was artificially induced in male Wistar rats by occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (MCAO) with an intraluminal monofilament. A single dose of intraperitoneal glucosamine of 200 mg/kg diluted in normal saline (SSN) was administered 60 min before ischemia. Histological brain sections were processed using indirect immunofluorescence with primary antibodies (anti-O-GlcNAc and anti pTau-ser 396). The Image J software was used to calculate the immunofluorescence signal intensity.Results: The phosphorylation of Tau at the serine residue 396 had a significant decrease with the administration of glucosamine during ischemia-reperfusion compared with the administration of placebo.Conclusions: These results show that glucosamine can reduce the phosphorylation levels of Tau in rodents subjected to ischemia and cerebral reperfusion, which implies a neuroprotective role of glucosamine.

Background
Increasing evidences advocate for an important function of T cells in controlling immune homeostasis and pathogenesis after myocardial infarction (MI), although the molecular mechanisms remain elusive.
Result and Methods
In this study, a broad analysis of immune markers in 283 patients show a significant CD69 overexpression on Treg cells after MI. Our results in mice demonstrate that CD69 expression on Treg cells increases survival after left-anterior-descending coronary artery (LAD)-ligation. Cd69-/- mice develop strong IL17A+ gdT cell responses after ischemia that increase myocardial inflammation and, consequently, worsen cardiac function. CD69+ Treg cells induce apoptosis and decrease IL-17A production in gdT cells by a CD39-dependent mechanism. Adoptive transfer of CD69+ Treg cells to Cd69-/- mice after LAD-ligation reduces IL17A+ gdT cell recruitment increasing survival. Consistently, clinical data from two independent cohorts of patients indicate that increased CD69 expression in peripheral blood cells after acute MI is associated with a lower risk of re-hospitalization for chronic heart failure (CHF) after 2.5 years of follow-up. This result remained significant after adjustment for age, sex and traditional cardiac damage biomarkers (OR 0.929, 95% CI, 0.838-0.980; p<0.0409).
Conclusion
Our data highlight CD69 expression on T cells as a therapeutic and prognostic target to prevent CHF after MI.

Abstract
Background and purpose The aim was to evaluate whether adaptive NKG2C+ natural killer (NK) cells, characterized by enhanced antibody‐dependent cell cytotoxicity (ADCC), may influence time to B cell repopulation after rituximab treatment in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. Methods This was a prospective observational study of MS patients treated with rituximab monitoring peripheral B cells for repeated doses. B cell repopulation was defined as CD19+ cells above 2% of total lymphocytes, classifying cases according to the median time of B cell repopulation as early or late (≤9 months, >9 months, respectively). Basal NK cell immunophenotype and in vitro ADCC responses induced by rituximab were assessed by flow cytometry. Results B cell repopulation in 38 patients (24 relapsing–remitting MS [RRMS]; 14 progressive MS) was classified as early (≤9 months, n = 19) or late (>9 months, n = 19). RRMS patients with late B cell repopulation had higher proportions of NKG2C+ NK cells compared to those with early repopulation (24.7% ± 16.2% vs. 11.3% ± 10.4%, p < 0.05), and a direct correlation between time to B cell repopulation and percentage of NKG2C+ NK cells (R 0.45, p < 0.05) was observed. RRMS cases with late repopulation compared with early repopulation had a higher secretion of tumor necrosis factor α and interferon γ by NK cells after rituximab‐dependent NK cell activation. The NK cell immunophenotype appeared unrelated to B cell repopulation in progressive MS patients. Conclusions Adaptive NKG2C+ NK cells in RRMS may be associated with delayed B cell repopulation after rituximab, a finding probably related to enhanced depletion of B cells exerted by NK‐cell‐mediated ADCC, pointing to the use of personalized regimens with anti‐CD20 monoclonal antibody therapy in some patients.

Background
Air pollutants increase the risk of myocardial infarction. Air pollution-induced atherosclerotic plaque destabilization may be related to inflammation, but the specific inflammatory alterations remain unclear.
Purpose
The aim of this prospective study was to assess the inflammatory changes in circulating immune cells and microRNAs in patients with acute coronary syndrome related to short-term exposure to PM2.5.
Methods
We prospectively included all consecutive patients admitted between March 2017 and July 2018 with the diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome (STEMI, NSTEMI, unstable angina) and coronary angiography in the acute phase of the disease. We also included a control group of patients with stable angina. For each patient we collected air concentrations of PM2.5 from the closest meteorological station to the patient residence obtaining the previous 24-hour average before hospital admission. All patients underwent systematic circulating inflammatory cell analysis. A selection of patients underwent miRNAs analysis.
Results
A total of 261 patients were included. According to PM2.5 exposure, 31 patients were selected for miRNA analyses. STEMI patients exposed to PM2.5 showed a reduction of CD4+ regulatory T (Treg) cells (Figure 1A). In the microRNA assessment, PM2.5 exposure was associated with higher circulating levels of let-7f-5p, miR-223-3p, miR-423-3p, miR-197-3p, miR-335–5, miR-376c-3p and miR-501-3p. Regarding clinical presentation, PM2.5 exposure in STEMI and NSTEMI patients was associated with an increase of miR-let-7f-5p, whereas miR-423-3p and miR-146a-5p were increased only in STEMI patients (Figure 1B).
Conclusions
STEMI related to PM2.5 short-term exposure is associated to specific changes involving CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ Treg cells and miR-146a-5p.

Introduction
Cryptogenic stroke (CS) represents up to 30% of ischemic strokes. Since atrial fibrillation (AF) can be detected in up to one-third of CS, there is a clinical need for estimating the probability of underlying AF in CS to guide the optimal secondary prevention strategy.
Surrogate markers of left atrial dysfunction such as left atrial size, left atrial strain (LAS) and NTproBNP has been described as predictors of AF in patients with CS. However the evidence about AF markers in comprehensive and prospective studies in CS is still limited.
Purpose
The present study was designed to develop the first score to predict underlying AF in CS patients that includes markers of atrial dysfunction. To reach our aim we developed a comprehensive analysis including clinical, laboratory, electrocardiografic and advanced echocardiographic variables in patients with CS.
Methods
Sixty-three consecutive patients with ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack with ABCD2 scale ≥4 of unknown etiology were prospectively recruited. Clinical, laboratory, electrocardiografic and echocardiographic variables were collected. All patients underwent 15 days wearable Holter monitoring. Main objective was the Decryptoring score creation to predict AF in CS. Score variables were initially selected by a univariate logistic regression and, thereafter, the score points were derived according to a multivariant analysis.
Results
AF was detected in 15 patients (24%). Patients in the AF group were older (81.4±6.9 vs 76.5±7.8 years; p=0.035. There was no difference in sex between groups. Regarding cardiovascular risk factors patients who developed AF had more often hypertension (87% vs 52%; p=0.018) without differences in diabetes, dyslipidemia and tobacco consumption. T troponin and NTproBNP were higher in the AF group (47±55.9 vs 16.8±12.4 ng/L; p=0.018 and 1379±1650 vs 317±496 ng/ml; p=0.001 respectively). There were no differences in ECG parameters such as p wave voltage, interatrial block, PR interval or QRS.
LAS reservoir, LAS conduct and LAS contraction were lower in patients with AF (18.6±4.6 vs 32.1±10.9%; 8±4.3 vs 15.6±8%; 10.5±3.4 vs 16.6±7 respectively, all p<0.001).
Age >75 (9 points), hypertension (1 point), Troponin T >40 ng/L (8.5 points), NTproBNP >200 pg/ml (0.5 points), LAS reservoir <25.3% (24.5 points) and LAS conduct <10.4% (0.5 points) were included in the score. The rate of AF detection was 0% among patients with a score of <10 and 80% among patients with a score >35.
Conclusion
The proposed score offers an accurate AF prediction in patients with CS providing a new clinical tool to orient the optimal treatment in these patients.

Introduction
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a relatively prevalent condition associated with arrhythmic events and sudden cardiac death. Several tools are currently available to identify which HCM patients are at risk of developing these events.
Purpose
We aimed to evaluate the association of Tissue Tracking strain analysis by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) and the development of arrhythmic events in patients with HCM.
Methods
We prospectively analyzed 136 consecutive patients with HCM diagnosis (established according to current clinical practice guidelines) from January 2006 to October 2017. Every routine 24 hours ECG-monitoring test was registered and looked for sustained or non-sustained ventricular tachycardia (any VT). CMR studies were performed following our predefined CMR protocol for HCM with 1.5T magnets. Cine images were obtained with standard, retrospectively gated, steady-state free-precession (SSFP) sequences in 2, 3 and 4 chambers views and in 10–15 contiguous short-axis slices covering the ventricles from the base to the apex, with breath holding. The strain evaluation was performed by a commercially available Tissue Tracking analysis software, manually defining the endocardial border in short axis, 4, 3 and 2 chambers views and, after verifying adequate identification of the different structures, running the strain analysis (Figure 1, displaying myocardium identification by the strain analysis software).
Results
Mean follow-up was 49 ± 45 months. Mean age was 61 ± 15 years old (p for the comparation between the group with arrhythmic and the group without arrhythmic events 0.212) and 31% of patients were women (p 0.420). Mean ejection fraction was 69 ± 9.21% (p 0.223) and mean HCM-SCD (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy sudden cardiac death) risk score was 2.20 ± 1.34 (p <0.001). Median percentage of total myocardium showing late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) was 0.61 (interquartile range 2.9; p 0.170). Mean global radial strain (GRS) was 26.23 ± 8.78% (p <0.001). 21 VT episodes were recorded during follow-up. GRS showed an area under de ROC curve of 0.75 predicting VT during follow-up, selecting the value of 27% as the best sensitivity/specificity cutoff point. Statistically significant differences were not found when analyzing global circumferential strain (GCS) and global longitudinal strain (GLS) as VT predictors after adjusting for possible confusion factors (GRS, GCS and GLS distributions depicted in Figure 2). A binary GRS ≥27%/<27% variable was included in a logistic regression model adjusted by age, percent of total myocardium mass showing LGE and HCM-SCD risk score. Significantly more arrhythmic events were found to occur in patients with a GRS <27% (OR 7.33; 95% confidence interval 1.07 – 50.41; p 0.043) after adjusting by age, percent of total myocardium mass showing LGE, and HCM-SCD risk score
Conclusions
A GRS value of <27% on CMR appears to be a good predictor of worse arrhythmic prognosis in patients with HCM.

Cine images were obtained with standard, retrospectively gated, steady-state free-precession (SSFP) sequences in 2, 3 and 4 chambers views and in 10–15 contiguous short-axis slices covering the ventricles from the base to the apex, with breath holding. The strain evaluation was performed by a commercially available Tissue Tracking analysis software, manually defining the endocardial border in short axis, 4, 3 and 2 chambers views and, after verifying adequate identification of the different structures, running the strain analysis (Figure 1, displaying myocardium identification by the strain analysis software).
Results
Mean follow-up was 49 ± 45 months. Mean age was 61 ± 15.33 years old (p 0.024) and 31% of patients were women (p 0.01). 20% had atrial fibrillation (p 0.154). Mean ejection fraction was 69 ± 9.21% (p 0.762) and mean HCM-SCD (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy sudden cardiac death) risk score was 2.20 ± 1.35 (p 0.885).
Mean global radial systolic strain rate (GRSsr) was -1,33 ± 0.59 s-1 (p 0.083). During follow-up, 12 heart failure hospital admissions and 14 death from any cause were registered.
GRSsr showed an area under de ROC curve of 0.63 (95% confidence interval -CI- 0.51 – 0.75) predicting clinical events. The value of 1.40 s−1 was selected as the best sensitivity/specificity cutoff point. Three variables (sex, age, and previous history of atrial fibrillation) were chosen (through the allsets method) and included as adjusting variables together with <1,40 s−1/≥1.40 s−1 in a multivariate Cox’s regression model (p 0.002; AIC 99.7; Harrell C index 0.82). Patients with GRSsr <1.40 s−1 showed more clinical evens on follow-up vs those with GRSsr ≥1.40 s−1 (adjusted HR 6.57; 95% CI 2.01 – 21.49; p 0.002; Figure 2, displaying Kaplan-Meier survival estimates).
Conclusions
A GRSsr <1.40 s−1 emerges as a novel independent predictor of worse clinical outcomes in patients with HCM and preserved ejection fraction.

Abstract
Water shortage and low organic carbon content in soil limit soil fertility and crop productivity. The use of desalinated seawater is increasing as an alternative source of irrigation water. However, it has a high boron (B) content that could cause toxicity in the plant-soil microbial system. Here, we evaluated the responses of the soil microbiota and lemon trees to 3 irrigation B doses (0.3, 1, and 15 mg L-1) under two types of soil management (conventional, CS; and organic, OS) in a 180-days pot experiment. High B doses promoted B accumulation in soil, reaching harmful concentrations that affected soil biodiversity. Our results suggest a close interaction between B and organic labile fractions that increased B availability in soil solution. Besides, B addition to soil impacted on microbial biomass. The bacterial community showed sensitivity to the B dose. Organic amendment did not increase B soil adsorption but it favored B plant uptake. The highest B dose had a detrimental impact on plant physiology, finally resulting lethal for the plants. Our study provides a comprehensive assessment of the microbes-plant interactions in soils irrigated with water with high B content. This will be fundamental in the design of future fertirrigation strategies.

Background
Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is a rare cause of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Clinical features, angiographic findings, management and outcomes of SCAD in elderly patients remain unknown.
Methods
The Spanish multicenter prospective SCAD registry included 318 consecutive patients with SCAD diagnosis. Patients were classified according to age in two groups: <65 and ≥65 years old.
Results
A total of 55 patients (17%) were 65 or older (Table). Elderly patients had more often hypertension (29% vs 76%, p<0.01) and dyslipidemia (30% vs 56%, p<0.01), and less smoking history (51% vs 7%, p<0.01). Previous history of coronary artery disease was also more frequent in older patients (4% vs 11%, p=0.044). Interestingly, an identifiable trigger was more often found among patients under 65. Coronary artery tortuosity (1±0.99 vs 1.4±1, p=0.027) and coronary artery ectasia (9% vs 24%, p<0.01) were both more frequent in elderly patients, who were more often managed conservatively (75% vs 89%, p=0.025). A trend toward a higher mortality rate was found among patients ≥65, with no differences in terms of in hospital stay, new acute myocardial infarction, unplanned coronariography or heart failure.
Conclusions
Elderly patients with SCAD show different clinical and angiographic characteristics and they receive distinct management. Short-term outcomes do not significantly differ from those seen in younger patients.

Introduction
During the acute phase of Tako-tsubo syndrome (TTS) electrocardiogram (ECG) features change and myocardial edema is a common finding in Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR). However, the relationship between ECG changes and myocardial edema is still unclear.
Purpose
To define if the presence and extension of myocardial edema might be predicted by electrocardiographic changes since admission to CMR.
Methods
Consecutive patients with TTS undergoing CMR during hospitalization were included. All patients underwent serial electrocardiography during the acute phase. Myocardial edema presence and extension was assessed by expert observers using the 17-segments cardiac segmentation model. ECG were analysed by expert observers blinded to the presence of myocardial edema. ECG pattern as predictors of myocardial edema presence and its extension were analysed by a binary regression and Student's t test.
Results
A total of 42 patients were included. Admission cQT was 472±60 ms. Thirty patients (71%) developed widespread negative T-waves and 55% showed cQT prolongation (cQT 476±58 ms) by the time of CMR. The median (IQR) time from admission to CMR imaging was 5 days (2–7 days). Myocardial edema was found in 30 patients (71%) and mean number of myocardial segments affected by edema was 4.8±2.5. Widespread negative T-wave development at the time of CMR imaging was associated with a smaller number of myocardial segments with edema. However no significant correlation was found between extension of myocardial edema and QT prolongation. No ECG pattern predicted a full recovery of myocardial edema (Table).
Conclusions
Development of widespread negative T-wave at the time of CMR predicts smaller myocardial edema extension. However, no other ECG features by the time of CMR were able to predict the full recovery of myocardial edema.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Capillary malformation-arteriovenous malformation (CM-AVM) syndrome is a rare syndrome with characteristic skin lesions that are associated with fast-flow vascular malformations (FFVMs) in one-third of patients. Few case series have been described, and none in Spain. AIM To identify the prevalence of dermatological parameters, FFVMs and associated features in a large series of patients with CM-AVM. METHODS We conducted an observational study of patients with CM-AVM syndrome diagnosed in 15 Spanish hospitals over 3 years. The main clinical, radiological, genetic findings and associated diseases were analysed. RESULTS In total, 64 patients were assessed. In 26.5% of cases, the diagnosis was incidental. In 75% of patients, there was one significantly larger macule, which we termed the 'herald patch'. FFVMs were detected in 34% of the patients, with 30% located on the skin, 7.8% in the brain and in 1.5% in the spine. There was a positive family history in 65% of the 64 patients. Genetic analysis was performed for RASA1 mutations in 57 patients, of whom 42 (73%) had a positive result. All 4 patients tested for EPHB4 mutations had a positive result. No tumour lesions were detected in the series, except for five infantile haemangiomas. CONCLUSIONS Our data on clinical lesions, associated FFVM, family history and genetics are similar to those previously published in the literature. An extensive data analysis failed to demonstrate any statistically significant association between the presence of an FFVM and any clinical, familial or genetic parameter that could predict its onset, although a link between the presence of a herald patch on the midline face and the presence of a brain FFVM was observed. We did not detect any genotype-phenotype correlation.

Abstract
Magnetic nanoparticles such as cobalt ferrite are investigated under clinical hyperthermia conditions for the treatment of cancer. Cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (CFNPs) synthesized by the thermal decomposition method, using nonionic surfactant Triton-X100, possess hydrophilic polyethylene oxide chains acting as reducing agents for the cobalt and iron precursors. The monodispersed nanoparticles were of 10 nm size, as confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). The X-ray diffraction patterns of CFNPs prove the existence of cubic spinel cobalt ferrites. Cs-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy–high-angle annular dark-field imaging (STEM–HAADF) of CFNPs confirmed their multi-twinned crystallinity due to the presence of atomic columns and defects in the nanostructure. Magnetic measurements proved that the CFNPs possess reduced remnant magnetization (MR/MS) (0.86), which justifies cubic anisotropy in the system. Microwave-based hyperthermia studies performed at 2.45 GHz under clinical conditions in physiological saline increased the temperature of the CFNP samples due to the transformation of radiation energy to heat. The specific absorption rate of CFNPs in physiological saline was 68.28 W/g. Furthermore, when triple-negative breast cancer cells (TNBC) in the presence of increasing CFNP concentration (5 mg/mL to 40 mg/mL) were exposed to microwaves, the cell cytotoxicity was enhanced compared to CFNPs alone.

Abstract
Background Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection has been recently associated with a low risk of multiple sclerosis (MS), yet the basis behind this observation remains uncertain. In this study, we aimed to determine in MS patients whether HCMV induces modifications in the peripheral B cell compartment. Methods HCMV serostatus was determined in 73 MS patients (55 relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS); 18 progressive MS (PMS)) and 30 healthy controls, assessing their B cell immunophenotype and cytokine production (GM-CSF, IL-6, IL-10, and TNFα) by flow cytometry. Results HCMV seropositivity in untreated MS patients (n = 45) was associated with reduced switched memory B cells, contrasting with an opposite effect in PMS. Expansions of transitional B cells were observed in HCMV(+) IFNβ-treated RRMS patients but not in HCMV(−) cases (p < 0.01), suggesting that HCMV may influence the distribution of B cell subsets modulating the effects of IFNβ. Considering the B cell functional profile, HCMV(−) PMS displayed an increased secretion of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNFα) as compared to HCMV(+) PMS and RRMS cases (p < 0.001). Conclusions Our study reveals an influence of HCMV infection on the phenotype and function of B cells, promoting early differentiation stages in RRMS and reducing the proinflammatory cytokine profile in advanced MS forms, which might be related with the putative protective role of this virus in MS.

A 59 year old man was admited to hospitalization for persistent chest pain related to acute pericarditis. Within the admision tests, a transthoracic echography was performed, showing a moderate pericardial effusion with ventricular septal bounce and significant respiratory variations in mitral and tricuspid inflows, all of it consistent with effusive-constrictive pericarditis (Panel A). Anti-inflammatory treatment with ibuprofen and colchicine was started.
During the first 48 hours of admission there was a clinical and hemodinamic worsening in the patient’s condition that forced the performance of a pericardial window, obtaining a very little quantity of dense pericardial fluid. Looking for a more accurate study of the pericardium, a cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) was performed, revealing a thick heterogeneous pericardial effusion (Panel B) and a significant late gadolinium enhancement of both pericardial layers (Panel C). All these findings where consistent with an effusive constrictive pericarditis with persistent inflammatory activity despite high doses of conventional inflammatory treatment. Furthermore, the growth of Propionibacterium acnes in the pericardial fluid disclosed the etiology of this condition.
Medical treatment was enhanced with high doses of intravenous corticosteroid, ceftriaxone and doxycycline. During the following days, the patient showed an excellent response achieving the complete clinical and echocardiographic relief of constrictive signs (Panel D).
Effusive constrictive pericarditis is characterized by the presence of pericardial effusion and constriction secondary to an inflammatory process of the pericardium. Pericardiectomy might be necessary in case of failure of medical treatment, a very common scenario in this kind of .pericarditis.
Our case is remarkable because it demonstrates the value of CMR to detect persistent inflammation of pericardium despite high doses of conventional medical treatment for pericaricarditis guiding the successful escalation to intravenous corticosteroid and avoiding the risk of an unnecessary cardiac surgery.

INTRODUCTION
An 83-year-old woman with a past medical history of hypertension, dyslipidaemia and recent diagnosis of disseminated breast cancer was admitted at Emergency department for acute heart failure. She complained about short chest pain episodes on previous days, the ECG showed new T negative waves on precordial leads and high sensitive troponin serum levels were modestly increased (TropT 1200ng/l). Echocardiographic assessment documented moderate left ventricular dysfunction (LVEF 40%) with apical and midventricular dyskinesia associated with hypercontractility off basal segments.
The following day the patient underwent a coronary angiography that showed an occlusion in the distal segment of a large obtuse marginal branch (Panel A) with no other significant stenosis in the remaining vessels. Ventriculography showed a typical apical ballooning pattern (Panel B). Despite the occluded coronary artery was reaching the apex, the myocardial wall motion abnormalities extended beyond the ischemic territory. Therefore, a cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) was performed a few days later in order to clarify the diagnosis.
CMR confirmed the mid LVEF dysfunction with apical dyskinesia and the T2 weighted spin echo images showed myocardial oedema in all the apical segments (Panel C). Remarkably, a subedocardial late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) restricted to the apical segment of the inferolateral wall was detected, being consistent with the ischaemic territory of the occluded obtuse marginal branch (Panel D). These findings supported the concomitant diagnosis of an apical stress cardiomyopathy and an acute inferolateral myocardial infarction. The patient was successfully discharged one week later with a normal LVEF and no signs of congestion.
DISCUSSION
Apical ballooning in the scenario of an acute coronary syndrome may be secondary to both an acute coronary artery occlusion or to stress cardiomyopathy. Cardiac MR has a key role to resolve the differential diagnosis of these two aetiologies, since ischemia typically produces a subendocardial late gadolinium enhancement pattern and stress cardiomyopathy shows an apical oedema without coronary stenosis or extending beyond a localized ischemic territory. Our case is astonishing because in the clinical practice these two diagnoses frequently excludes each other, but as demonstrated in our case, the differential diagnosis between myocardial infarction and stress cardiomyopathy is not a proper dichotomy.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) has been recently related with a lower susceptibility to multiple sclerosis (MS). HCMV promotes an adaptive development of NK cells bearing the CD94/NKG2C receptor with a characteristic phenotypic and functional profile. NK cells are proposed to play an immunoregulatory role in MS, and expansion of the NKG2C(+) subset was recently associated with reduced disability progression. To further explore this issue, additional adaptive NK cell markers, i.e., downregulation of FcεRIγ chain (FcRγ) and PLZF transcription factor, as well as antibody-dependent NK cell activation were assessed in controls and MS patients considering HCMV serology and clinical features. In line with previous reports, increased proportions of NKG2C(+), FcRγ(-), and PLZF(-) CD56dim NK cells were found in HCMV(+) cases. However, PLZF(-) NK cells were detected uncoupled from other adaptive markers within the CD56bright subset from HCMV(+) cases and among CD56dim NK cells from HCMV(-) MS patients, suggesting an additional effect of HCMV-independent factors in PLZF downregulation. Interferon-β therapy was associated with lower proportions of FcRγ(-) CD56dim NK cells in HCMV(+) and increased PLZF(-) CD56bright NK cells in HCMV(-) patients, pointing out to an influence of the cytokine on the expression of adaptive NK cell-associated markers. In addition, proportions of NKG2C(+) and FcRγ(-) NK cells differed in progressive MS patients as compared to controls and other clinical forms. Remarkably, an adaptive NK cell phenotype did not directly correlate with enhanced antibody-triggered degranulation and TNFα production in MS in contrast to controls. Altogether, our results provide novel insights into the putative influence of HCMV and adaptive NK cells in MS.

Abstract
The high boron (B) content in desalinated seawater is a concern for crop development. However, in spite of the importance of the soil microbial community in soil fertility, the below-ground impacts of B are still unknown. Here, in a soil-ryegrass model system, the activity, biomass and diversity of the soil microbial community were evaluated in response to irrigation with: i) 0.3 mg B L-1; ii) 1 mg B L-1; and iii) 50 mg B L-1. We assessed two different compounds of boron: boric acid (H3BO3) and disodium tetraborate decahydrate (Na2B4O7·10H2O). Overall, the 1 mg B L-1 dose was identified as the threshold limit that did not irreversibly harm soil sustainability. In contrast, the highest B dose had a noticeable impact on the nitrogen (N) cycle of the soil, as demonstrated by an increase in the water-soluble N content and a decrease in urease activity. Analysis of the phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) revealed that the effect of B on the soil microbial biomass was dependent on the chemical form used. High B doses reduced soil microbial respiration and influenced the composition of the bacterial and fungal communities, with fungal diversity being diminished, as revealed by sequencing approaches.

High Numbers of Circulating CD57 + NK Cells Associate with Resistance to HER2-Specific Therapeutic Antibodies in HER2 + Primary Breast Cancer. Cancer Immunol Res 2019; 7:1280-1292. Abstract
Natural killer (NK) cells can orchestrate effective antitumor immunity. The presence of tumor-infiltrating NK cells in diagnostic biopsies predicts pathologic complete response (pCR) to HER2-specific therapeutic antibodies in patients with primary breast cancer. Here, we analyzed whether diversity in circulating NK cells might influence tumor infiltration and HER2-specific therapeutic antibody efficacy. We found that numbers of circulating CD57+ NK cells inversely correlated with pCR to HER2-specific antibody treatment in patients with primary breast cancer independently of age, traditional clinicopathologic factors, and CD16A 158F/V genotype. This association was uncoupled from the expression of other NK-cell receptors, the presence of adaptive NK cells, or changes in major T-cell subsets, reminiscent of cytomegalovirus-induced immunomodulation. NK-cell activation against trastuzumab-coated HER2+ breast cancer cells was comparable in patients with high and low proportions of CD57+ NK cells. However, circulating CD57+ NK cells displayed decreased CXCR3 expression and CD16A-induced IL2-dependent proliferation in vitro Presence of CD57+ NK cells was reduced in breast tumor-associated infiltrates as compared with paired peripheral blood samples, suggesting deficient homing, proliferation, and/or survival of NK cells in the tumor niche. Indeed, numbers of circulating CD57+ were inversely related to tumor-infiltrating NK-cell numbers. Our data reveal that NK-cell differentiation influences their antitumor potential and that CD57+ NK cells may be a biomarker useful for tailoring HER2 antibody-based therapeutic strategies in breast cancer.

Abstract
Quinoa proteins (QP) have promise as a potential source of novel food ingredients, and it is of great interest to know how high-intensity ultrasound (HIUS) treatments affect the properties of QP. This work aimed to study the impact of on-off time-pulses of HIUS treatments on the structural and physicochemical properties of QP; samples were treated at 5, 10, 20, and 30 min with on-off pulses of 10 s/10 s, 5 s/1 s, and 1 s/5 s). Structural changes were evaluated using PAGE-SDS, circular dichroism, fluorescence spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. Meanwhile, physicochemical properties were also examined, including solubility, Z-average, polydispersity index PDI, and Z-potential. PAGE-SDS showed the appearance of polypeptides over 190 kDa in HIUS samples-treated. All samples presented 15.6% α-helices, 31.3% β-sheets, 21.8% β-rotations, and 31.4% random coils independent of the HIUS treatment. β-Turn structures and "random coils" were not affected by HIUS. When US 10 s/10 s and 1 s/5 s were applied, an increase in the % α-helix and a decrease in β-fold were observed, which could indicate a small conversion of β-folds to α-helices. Fluorescence spectra for all HIUS showed a significant increase (23%) of average fluorescence intensity and a decrease of λmax in relation to that of the control (346 dnm and 340 nm average HIUS treatment). DSC showed one endotherm in all cases (81.6-99.8 °C), and an increase in Td was observed due to the effect of the HIUS treatment. HIUS caused a 48% increase in solubility. The Z-average of the HIUS samples compared to that of the controls showed an increase from 37.8 to 47.3 nm. PDI and Z-potential values from the QP controls and the HIUS samples did not show significance differences and presented average values of 0.466 ± 0.021 (PDI) and -16.63 ± 0.89 (Z-potential). It is possible to conclude that HIUS treatments affect the secondary and tertiary structure of quinoa proteins, and these changes resulted in an increase of solubility and particle size. HIUS treatment as a new and promising technology that can improve the QP solubility properties and in that way allow its use as an ingredient with a good source of protein to develop different types of beverages/protein sauces.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection has recently been associated with a lower multiple sclerosis (MS) susceptibility, although it remains controversial whether it has a protective role or is merely an epiphenomenon related to westernization and early-life viral infections. We aimed to evaluate whether CMV serostatus may differ in patients with early MS as compared with patients with non-early MS, analyzing the putative association of this virus with MS clinical course and humoral immune responses against other herpesviruses. METHODS Multicentric analysis was undertaken of 310 patients with MS (early MS, disease duration ≤5 years, n = 127) and controls (n = 155), evaluating specific humoral responses to CMV, Epstein-Barr virus and human herpesvirus-6, as well as T-cell and natural killer (NK)-cell immunophenotypes. RESULTS Cytomegalovirus seroprevalence in early MS was lower than in non-early MS or controls (P < 0.01), being independently associated with disease duration (odds ratio, 1.04; 95% confidence interval, 1.01-1.08, P < 0.05). CMV+ patients with MS displayed increased proportions of differentiated T-cells (CD27-CD28-, CD57+, LILRB1+) and NKG2C+ NK-cells, which were associated with a lower disability in early MS (P < 0.05). CMV+ patients with early MS had an age-related decline in serum anti-EBNA-1 antibodies (P < 0.01), but no CMV-related differences in anti-human herpesvirus-6 humoral responses. CONCLUSIONS Low CMV seroprevalence was observed in patients with early MS. Modification of MS risk attributed to CMV might be related to the induction of differentiated T-cell and NK-cell subsets and/or modulation of Epstein-Barr virus-specific immune responses at early stages of the disease.

Abstract
Helicoverpa gelotopoeon, the South American bollworm, is a polyphagous pest of the Heliothinae complex that causes damage to soybean, cotton, and chickpea crops. Some species within this complex have developed resistance to genetically modified crops and insecticides, which has led to increased interest in their genetic diversity and population structure. The objective of this study was to characterize biological and reproductive parameters of two populations of H. gelotopoeon collected in two different provinces of Argentina. Intra- and inter-population crosses revealed that H. gelotopoeon populations from both regions of Argentina did not present evidence of pre-zygotic and post-zygotic incompatibility, suggesting that Tucumán and Córdoba populations of H. gelotopoeon belong to a single wide-ranging species. Our data support the occurrence of substantial gene flow between H. gelotopoeon populations, probably due to the widely documented, long-range migratory capacity of Heliothinae species.

Abstract
A multifunctional magneto-plasmonic CoFe2O4@Au core-shell nanoparticle was developed by iterative-seeding based method. This nanocargo consists of a cobalt ferrite kernel as a core (Nk) and multiple layers of gold as a functionalizable active stratum, (named as Nk@A after fifth iteration). Nk@A helps in augmenting the physiological stability and enhancing surface plasmon resonance (SPR) property. The targeted delivery of Doxorubicin using Nk@A as a nanopayload is demonstrated in this report. The drug release profile followed first order rate kinetics optimally at pH 5.4, which is considered as an endosomal pH of cells. The cellular MR imaging showed that Nk@A is an efficient T2 contrast agent for both L6 (r2-118.08 mM-1s-1) and Hep2 (r2-217.24 mM-1s-1) cells. Microwave based magnetic hyperthermia studies exhibited an augmentation in the temperature due to the transformation of radiation energy into heat at 2.45 GHz. There was an enhancement in cancer cell cytotoxicity when hyperthermia combined with chemotherapy. Hence, this single nanoplatform can deliver 3-pronged theranostic applications viz., targeted drug-delivery, T2 MR imaging and hyperthermia.

Abstract
The sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis (F.), has a widespread distribution throughout the Western Hemisphere and is a pest of many crop plants including sugarcane, corn, sorghum and rice. The use of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) corn has been the primary tool for managing this species in corn fields. Sugarcane borer control has been recently threatened by observations of susceptibility and/or resistance to certain varieties of Bt corn and the protein used in many newer varieties. This has led to increased interest in understanding sugarcane borer genetic diversity and gene flow within and among its populations and the consequent exchange of alleles between geographically distant populations. The objective of this study was to examine reproductive compatibility between host-associated geographic populations of D. saccharalis in Argentina and to determine whether this pest represents a complex of host-associated cryptic species rather than a wide ranging generalist species. Intra and inter-population crosses revealed that D. saccharalis populations from the northwestern and Pampas regions presented evidence of prezygotic and postzygotic incompatibility. Such a result is likely to be the product of an interruption of gene flow produced by either geographic or host plant associated isolation, suggesting that Tucumán (northwestern) and Buenos Aires (Pampas) populations of D. saccharalis are a distinct genotype and possibly an incipient species.

Abstract
AIMS In the context of a public health-oriented drug policy reform in Mexico, we assessed the spatial distribution of police encounters among people who inject drugs (PWID) in Tijuana, determined the association between these encounters and the location of addiction treatment centers and explored the association between police encounters and treatment access. DESIGN Geographically weighted regression (GWR) and logistic regression analysis using prospective spatial data from a community-recruited cohort of PWID in Tijuana and official geographical arrest data from the Tijuana Municipal Police Department. SETTING Tijuana, Mexico. PARTICIPANTS A total of 608 participants (median age 37; 28.4% female) in the prospective Proyecto El Cuete cohort study recruited between January and December 2011. MEASUREMENTS We compared the mean distance of police encounters and a randomly distributed set of events to treatment centers. GWR was undertaken to model the spatial relationship between police interactions and treatment centers. Logistic regression analysis was used to investigate factors associated with reporting police interactions. FINDINGS During the study period, 27.5% of police encounters occurred within 500 m of treatment centers. The GWR model suggested spatial correlation between encounters and treatment centers (global R(2) = 0.53). Reporting a need for addiction treatment was associated with reporting arrest and police assault [adjusted odds ratio = 2.74, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.25-6.02, P = 0.012]. CONCLUSIONS A geospatial analysis suggests that, in Mexico, people who inject drugs are at greater risk of being a victim of police violence if they consider themselves in need of addiction treatment, and their interactions with police appear to be more frequent around treatment centers.

Abstract
CD94/NKG2C and lack of FcεRγ (FcRγ) expression are considered markers of the adaptive NK cell response to human CMV (HCMV) infection. Despite the fact that FcRγ(-) and NKG2C(bright) NK cells share some phenotypic, epigenetic, and functional features, their relationship remains unclear. To address this issue, a systematic analysis of NKG2C(bright) and FcRγ expression was carried out in NK cells from a cohort of healthy young adults (n = 81) considering NKG2C copy number, previously related to the magnitude of NKG2C(+) NK cell expansion. NKG2C(bright) and FcRγ(-) NK cells coincided in a subgroup of HCMV(+) individuals, pointing to a common host-virus interaction pattern. Even though FcRγ loss was often confined to expanded NKG2C(bright) NK cells, both markers appeared occasionally dissociated, consistent with the existence of distinct adaptive NK cell subsets. Remarkably, FcRγ loss was mostly accumulated within the NKG2C(bright) subset in NKG2C(+/+) subjects, whereas NKG2C(-)FcRγ(-) NK cell subpopulations were more frequently detected in NKG2C(+/del) donors and also in NKG2C(del) (/del) individuals, independently of activating killer Ig-like receptor expression. The distribution of other NK receptors (i.e., killer Ig-like receptor, LILRB1, or CD57) supported a sequential differentiation from NKG2C(bright)FcRγ(+) to NKG2C(bright)FcRγ(-) NK cells. Noticeably, NKG2C(bright) NK cells produced more TNF-α in response to Ab-dependent activation, regardless of their FcRγ levels. Moreover, the TNF-α response of NKG2C(-)FcRγ(-) subpopulations was lower than that of concurrent NKG2C(bright)FcRγ(-) NK cells, further supporting that FcRγ levels and enhanced potential for cytokine production are uncoupled. Overall, our data extend the characterization of adaptive NK cell subsets that differentiate in response to HCMV, supporting a relationship between their distribution and NKG2C copy number.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) causes a highly prevalent infection which may have a multifaceted impact on chronic inflammatory disorders. However, its potential influence in multiple sclerosis (MS) remains controversial. The HCMV-host interaction may induce an adaptive reconfiguration of the natural killer (NK) cell compartment, whose hallmark is a persistent expansion of peripheral NKG2C+ NK-cells. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the HCMV-driven NKG2C+ NK-cell expansion is related to the MS clinical course. METHODS Multicentre analysis of NKG2C expression and genotype according to HCMV serostatus and time of assignment of irreversible disability scores in 246 MS patients prospectively followed up in our institutions. RESULTS NKG2C expression was unrelated to disease-modifying drugs, remained stable under steady-state conditions, and was higher in HCMV(+) NKG2C(+/+) homozygous individuals. NKG2C+ NK-cell expansion in HCMV(+) patients, as compared to HCMV(+) or HCMV(-) patients with lower NKG2C+ NK-cells proportions, conferred a lower risk of progression in Cox regression analysis (Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS)>3.0, hazard ratio (HR)=0.33, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.15-0.71, p=0.005; EDSS>5.5, HR=0.23, 95% CI 0.07-0.74, p=0.014). Neither HCMV serostatus nor NKG2C genotype appeared to be related to disability progression. CONCLUSIONS HCMV may exert a beneficial influence on MS, decreasing the risk of disability progression in those patients displaying a virus-driven NKG2C+ NK-cell expansion.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the effects of thermal dependence of speed of sound (SOS) and acoustic absorption of biological tissues during noninvasive focused ultrasound (US) hyperthermia therapy. METHODS A finite element (FE) model was used to simulate hyperthermia therapy in the liver by noninvasive focused US. The model consisted of an ultrasonic focused transducer radiating a four-layer biological medium composed of skin, fat, muscle, and liver. The acoustic field and temperature distribution along the layers were obtained after 15 s of hyperthermia therapy using the bio-heat equation. The model solution was found with and without the thermal dependence of SOS and acoustic absorption of biological tissues. RESULTS The inclusion of the thermal dependence of the SOS generated an increment of 0.4 mm in the longitudinal focus axis of the acoustic field. Moreover, results indicate an increment of the hyperthermia area (zone with temperature above 43 °C), and a maximum temperature difference of almost 3.5 °C when the thermal dependence of absorption was taken into account. CONCLUSION The increment of the achieved temperatures at the treatment zone indicated that the effects produced by the thermal dependence of SOS and absorption must be accounted for when planning hyperthermia treatment in order to avoid overheating undesired regions.

Abstract
Human CMV (HCMV) infection promotes a variable and persistent expansion of functionally mature NKG2C(bright) NK cells. We analyzed NKG2C(bright) NK cell responses triggered by Abs from HCMV(+) sera against HCMV-infected MRC5 fibroblasts. Specific Abs promoted the degranulation (i.e., CD107a expression) and the production of cytokines (TNF-α and IFN-γ) by a significant fraction of NK cells, exceeding the low natural cytotoxicity against HCMV-infected targets. NK cell-mediated Ab-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity was limited by viral Ag availability and HLA class I expression on infected cells early postinfection and increased at late stages, overcoming viral immunoevasion strategies. Moreover, the presence of specific IgG triggered the activation of NK cells against Ab-opsonized cell-free HCMV virions. As compared with NKG2A(+) NK cells, a significant proportion of NKG2C(bright) NK cells was FcεR γ-chain defective and highly responsive to Ab-driven activation, being particularly efficient in the production of antiviral cytokines, mainly TNF-α. Remarkably, the expansion of NKG2C(bright) NK cells in HCMV(+) subjects was related to the overall magnitude of TNF-α and IFN-γ cytokine secretion upon Ab-dependent and -independent activation. We show the power and sensitivity of the anti-HCMV response resulting from the cooperation between specific Abs and the NKG2C(bright) NK-cell subset. Furthermore, we disclose the proinflammatory potential of NKG2C(bright) NK cells, a variable that could influence the individual responses to other pathogens and tumors.

Abstract
Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-α) is an immunomodulatory and proinflammatory cytokine implicated in neuro-inflammation and neuronal damage in response to cerebral ischemia. The present study tested the hypothesis that anti-TNF-α agents may be protective against cerebral infarction. Transient focal ischemia was artificially induced in anesthetized adult male Wistar rats (300-350 g) by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) with an intraluminal suture. TNF-α function was interfered with either a chimeric monoclonal antibody against TNF-α (infliximab-7 mg/kg) aiming to TNF-α soluble and membrane-attached form; or a chimeric fusion protein of TNF-α receptor-2 with a fragment crystallizable (Fc) region of IgG1 (etanercept-5 mg/kg) aiming for the TNF-α soluble form. Both agents were administered intraperitoneally 0 or 6 h after inducing ischemia. Infarct volume was measured by 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride staining. Cerebral infarct volume was significantly reduced in either etanercept or infliximab-treated group compared with non-treated MCAO rats 24 h after reperfusion. These results suggest that anti-TNF-α agents may reduce focal ischemic injury in rats.

Abstract
A study of the spin-pair Hamiltonian with regard to the effective g-factor in the strong isotropic exchange limit is presented. The case of two different spins with anisotropic g(i) and D(i) tensors is considered. Effective gs and Ds tensors for the various total spin S values are deduced in terms of the corresponding single-ion parameters. The characteristics of the resultant gs -tensor, in the case of an ion-pair with Cσ symmetry, are treated in detail. The principal values are linear expressions of the single-ion principal values and the principal directions relative to different 5 values result to be correlated in a characteristic manner. The limits of the present strong exchange treatment are also discussed.
