Abstract
OBJECTIVES Evidence regarding placental function in pregnancies complicated by confined placental mosaicism (CPM) is conflicting. We aimed to compare placental function between CPM and non-CPM pregnancies prenatally and at birth. A secondary objective was to evaluate the relationship between placental function and chromosomal subtype of CPM. METHODS This was a retrospective study of pregnancies with CPM and control pregnancies delivered at a tertiary hospital in Denmark between 2014 and 2017. Placental volume and placental transverse relaxation time (T2*) were estimated on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), fetal weight and uterine artery pulsatility index (UtA-PI) were estimated on ultrasound and fetoplacental ratio was assessed on MRI and at birth. These estimates of placental function were adjusted for gestational age and compared between groups using the Wilcoxon rank-sum test. Within the group of CPM pregnancies, measures of placental function were compared between those at high risk (chromosome numbers 2, 3, 7, 13 and 16) and those at low risk (chromosome numbers 5, 18 and 45X). RESULTS A total of 90 pregnancies were included, of which 12 had CPM and 78 were controls. MRI and ultrasound examinations were performed at a median gestational age of 32.6 weeks (interquartile range, 24.7-35.3 weeks). On MRI assessment, CPM placentae were characterized by a lower placental T2* Z-score (P = 0.004), a lower fetoplacental ratio (P = 0.03) and a higher UtA-PI Z-score (P = 0.03), compared with non-CPM placentae. At birth, the fetoplacental ratio was significantly lower (P = 0.02) and placental weight Z-score was higher (P = 0.01) in CPM pregnancies compared with non-CPM pregnancies. High-risk CPM pregnancies showed a reduced placental T2* Z-score (P = 0.003), lower birth-weight Z-score (P = 0.041), earlier gestational age at delivery (P = 0.019) and higher UtA-PI Z-score (P = 0.028) compared with low-risk CPM pregnancies. Low-risk CPM pregnancies did not differ in any of these parameters from non-CPM pregnancies. CONCLUSIONS CPM pregnancies are characterized by an enlarged and dysfunctional placenta. Placental function was highly related to the chromosomal type of CPM; placental dysfunction was seen predominantly in high-risk CPM pregnancies in which chromosomes 2, 3, 7, 13 or 16 were involved. © 2023 The Authors. Abstract
Enzymes are widely used in food chemistry as analytical tools. An enzymatic method for determining lactose and galactose in foods was evaluated in an interlaboratory methods performance study by 12 laboratories in 4 countries. The method is based on enzymatic hydrolysis of lactose and enzymatic oxidation of the hydrolysis products. The exchange of the coenzyme in the second reaction is the basis of quantitation. The method may be used for various types of foods, such as liquid and solid milk products, meat products, cereal products, fats, dressings, sweets, chocolate, and foods for special dietary uses. It is also applicable to lactose-free foods but not to products in which lactose has been partially hydrolyzed enzymatically to glucose and galactose. Six commonly used foodstuffs with lactose concentrations ranging from 0.4 g/100 g to 40 g/100 g and galactose concentrations up to 0.7 g/100 g were analyzed: crisp rye bread, milk chocolate, sausage, cheese, margarine, and baby food containing milk powder. They were distributed to the 12 participants as 12 randomly numbered test samples, representing blind duplicates of the 6 materials. The relative standard deviations for reproducibility (RSDR) were between 2.3-11% for lactose and 6.8-50% for galactose.

Abstract
AIM Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a lifespan disorder associated with considerable economic cost. While the economic burden of ADHD has been widely estimated, there is considerable variation in reported costs between studies, which typically focus on health outcomes only, lack adequate control and fail to correct for the influence of genetic and shared environmental factors. The aim of this study is to overcome these limitations to reach a fuller understanding of the economic burden of ADHD. METHOD Using the Danish National Registers 5269 adults with a diagnosis of ADHD in adulthood who had not received a diagnosis in childhood were identified. Excluding cases with missing data, comorbid diagnoses, and cases without a same sex sibling free of any diagnosed psychiatric diagnoses, a final cohort was formed consisting of 460 sibling dyads. Using a cross-sectional method focusing on the year 2010, cost differences between each adult with ADHD and their sibling were calculated from data retrieved from health, education, crime, employment and social care registers. RESULTS Adults with ADHD had considerably lower disposable income and paid less tax than their siblings. They also received more state benefits, had higher costs for health, social care, and crime than their siblings. The total average costs difference for the year 2010 was 20,134 euros more than their sibling for each adult with ADHD. CONCLUSION ADHD is associated with considerable costs which are borne by both the individual and the state and underlines the need to consider the wider economic impact of ADHD beyond income and healthcare utilisation costs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) variable transverse relaxation time (T2*) depends on multiple factors, one important one being the presence of deoxyhemoglobin. We aimed to describe placental T2* measurements in normal pregnancies and in those with fetal growth restriction (FGR). METHODS We included 24 normal pregnancies at 24-40 weeks' gestation and four FGR cases with an estimated fetal weight below the 1(st) centile. Prior to MRI, an ultrasound examination, including Doppler flow measurements, was performed. The T2* value was calculated using a gradient echo MRI sequence with readout at 16 different echo times. In normal pregnancies, repeat T2* measurements were performed and interobserver reproducibility was assessed in order to estimate the reproducibility of the method. Placental histological examination was performed in the FGR cases. RESULTS The method was robust regarding the technical and interobserver reproducibility. However, some slice-to-slice variation existed owing to the heterogeneous nature of the normal placenta. We therefore based T2* estimations on the average of two slices from each placenta. In normal pregnancies, the placental T2* value decreased significantly with increasing gestational age, with mean ± SD values of 120 ± 17 ms at 24 weeks' gestation, 84 ± 16 ms at 32 weeks and 47 ± 17 ms at 40 weeks. Three FGR cases had abnormal Doppler flow, histological signs of maternal hypoperfusion and a reduced T2* value (Z-score < -3.5). In the fourth FGR case, Doppler flow, placental histology and T2* value (Z-score, -0.34) were normal. CONCLUSIONS The established reference values for placental T2* may be clinically useful, as T2* values were significantly lower in FGR cases with histological signs of maternal hypoperfusion. Abstract
Very few studies have used longitudinal data to examine whether age variations in the sense of control are due to ageing effects or cohort differences. With data from two waves of the Norwegian NorLAG study, with 2673 respondents aged 40 to 75 we ask: Does the sense of control decline over a 5-year period? Are there factors that accelerate the decline or slow it? We find that while cross-sectional comparisons indicate increases in sense of control up to age 75, longitudinal analysis show little to no change over 5 years. Only those 75 and older experienced a significant decline over the next 5 years. Physical health and agentive orientation at baseline can impede or accelerate decline in the sense of control. We also find that decline in sense of control starts 15 years later in this Norwegian sample than in similar studies in the United States, and discuss this finding in light of differences in welfare systems for elderly in the two countries.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate changes in human placental oxygenation during maternal hyperoxia using non-invasive blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS Eight healthy pregnant women with uncomplicated singleton pregnancies at gestational weeks 28-36 were examined with BOLD MRI, over two consecutive 5-min periods of different oxygenation: first normoxia (21% O2 ) and then hyperoxia (12 L O2 /min), achieved by controlling the maternal oxygen supply with a non-rebreather facial mask. Selecting three slices showing cross-sections of the central part of the placenta, we investigated total placental oxygenation by drawing regions of interest (ROIs) covering the entire placenta, and regional placental oxygenation by drawing smaller ROIs in the darker and brighter areas of the placenta. For each ROI, the difference in BOLD signal between the two episodes was determined and the percentage increase in BOLD signal during hyperoxia (ΔBOLD) was calculated. RESULTS In the BOLD image, the normoxic placenta appeared heterogeneous, with darker areas located to the fetal side and brighter areas to the maternal side. During hyperoxia, the placenta became brighter and the structure more homogeneous, and the BOLD signal of the total placenta increased (ΔBOLDtot , 15.2 ± 3.2% (mean ± SD), P < 0.0001). The increase was seen predominantly in the dark areas in the fetal part of the placenta (ΔBOLDfet , 32.1 ± 9.3%) compared with in the bright areas in the maternal part of the placenta (ΔBOLDmat , 5.4 ± 3.5%). CONCLUSION During hyperoxia, placental oxygenation was increased predominantly in the darker placental areas, which, given their anatomical location, represent the fetal circulation of the placenta. To our knowledge, this is the first study to successfully visualize changes in placental oxygenation using BOLD MRI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to measure differences in oxygenation between the left and right sides of the fetal liver during varying oxygenation levels. METHODS Eight ewes carrying singleton fetuses at gestational age 125 days (term, 145 days) were included in the study. Under anesthesia the ewes were ventilated with gas containing different levels of oxygen, thereby subjecting the fetuses to hyperoxia (mean ± SD maternal arterial partial pressure of oxygen (pO2), 23.2 ± 8.2 kPa) and hypoxia (mean maternal arterial pO2, 7.1 ± 0.5 kPa). Changes in oxygenation within the fetal liver were assessed by blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). RESULTS During hyperoxia there was no difference between the BOLD signal in the left and right sides of the fetal liver; mean change in BOLD (ΔBOLD)(hyperox), -0.9 ± 3.7%. During hypoxia, however, the decrease in the BOLD signal was more pronounced in the right side as compared with the left side, thereby creating a significant increase in the left-right difference in the BOLD signal; mean ΔBOLD(hypox), 5.2 ± 2.2% (P = 0.002, paired t-test). The left-right difference was directly proportional to the degree of hypoxia (R2 = 0.86, P = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS To our knowledge, this is the first study demonstrating differences in oxygenation between the left and right sides of the fetal liver during hypoxia, a difference that can be explained by increased ductus venosus shunting. Thus, the BOLD MRI technique is a promising non-invasive tool that might be useful for the future monitoring of the human fetus.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this descriptive study was to correlate changes in the blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signal with direct measurements of fetal tissue oxygenation. METHODS Seven anesthetized ewes carrying singleton fetuses at 125 days' gestation (term 145 days) underwent BOLD MRI, covering the entire fetus in a multislice approach. The fetuses were subjected to normoxic, hypoxic and hyperoxic conditions by changing the O(2)/N(2)O ratio in the maternal ventilated gas supply. The partial pressure of oxygen (pO2) in the fetal liver was measured using an oxygen-sensitive optode. Maternal arterial blood samples were simultaneously withdrawn for blood gas analysis. These measurements were compared with BOLD MRI signals in the fetal liver, kidney, spleen and brain. RESULTS We demonstrated a consistent increase in the BOLD MRI signal with increasing tissue pO(2). For the fetal liver, spleen and kidney we observed a clear association between changes in maternal arterial blood pO2 and changes in BOLD MRI signal. Interestingly, we found that the BOLD signal of the fetal brain remained unchanged during hypoxic, normoxic and hyperoxic conditions. CONCLUSIONS This experimental study demonstrated that BOLD MRI is a reliable non-invasive method for measuring changes in tissue oxygenation in fetal sheep. The unchanged signal in the fetal brain during altered maternal oxygen conditions is probably explained by the brain-sparing mechanism.

Abstract
Serum defined BoLA-A antigens, together with BoLA-DQB RFLP patterns, were determined in 87 almost unrelated Norwegian cattle. Statistical analysis revealed strong linkage disequilibria between these loci at the population level. A total of 13 haplotypes were found to be present at frequencies significantly greater than those predicted on the basis of their component gene frequencies. Among these, the subgroups 1A and 1B of the DQ1 haplotype were found to be closely associated with the class I antigens A11 and w16, respectively. The association between A11 and DQ1A is of particular interest, as two independent studies, one employing class I serology, and the other RFLP analysis of the class II locus DQ, have previously indicated that A11 and DQ1A confer relative susceptibility to mastitis.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of diet energy density and milking frequency on mammary cell turnover and synthetic capacity in dairy cows. Experiment 1 used 20 dairy cows. From d 4 to wk 16 postpartum, the cows were fed either a low-energy density or a high-energy density diet. From d 4 through wk 8, half of the cows in each group were milked 3 times (3x) or 2 times (2x) daily. From wk 9 to 16, all cows were milked 2 times daily. Mammary biopsies were obtained at wk 8 and 16 postpartum. In experiment 2, udders of 18 individual cows were milked diagonally 2x and 4x, and biopsies were obtained after 7 d. In experiment 1, cows on the low-energy density diet yielded 17 and 24% less milk during wk 3 to 8 and wk 11 to 16 postpartum, respectively. Furthermore, at 8 wk postpartum, mammary enzyme activities tended to be lower and mammary cell proliferation was lower in cows on the low-energy density diet. Three times daily milking during the first 8 wk postpartum resulted in 11% higher milk yield. Mammary cell turnover or enzyme activities were not significantly affected at 8 wk. The 3x milking for 8 wk resulted only in a transient carryover effect on milk yield and neither cell turnover nor enzyme activities were significantly affected at 16 wk postpartum. In experiment 2, mammary cell turnover and enzyme activity were unaffected after 7 d of 4x milking although milk yield increased by 18%. We conclude that nutrient restriction affects mammary cell turnover and possible enzyme activity, and that tuning of negative feedback loops in response to filling of the gland may be the dominating effects of changes in milking frequency.

Abstract
The Arguello model of cancer metastasis to bone has been used extensively to study breast cancer-induced osteolytic disease. The effects of therapy on skeletal disease and on tumour burden in soft organs are traditionally measured using radiography and/or time-consuming histomorphometry, respectively. The purpose of this study was to develop a sensitive and efficient method for evaluating tumour burden in vivo using MDA-231 cells transduced with the E. coli lacZ gene (MDA-231BAG). Osteolysis was measured by radiography and tumour burden was measured histomorphometrically or biochemically. In untreated mice, measurements of tumour burden in bone extracts using human cytokeratin-associated tissue polypeptide antigen (TPA) ELISA or E. coli beta-galactosidase (beta-gal) activity immunoassay reflected the extent of osteolytic disease as measured by radiography; however, tumour load could be detected before onset of osteolysis. When monitoring the effect of therapy (0.2 mg/kg ibandronate/day), radiography alone proved to be insufficient. Mice treated with the bisphosphonate ibandronate from time of inoculation with cancer cells had no radiologically visible signs of osteolysis but significant tumour load was measured in the bone extracts using these assays. Furthermore, beta-gal activity could be used as a measurement of tumour load in soft organs, and unlike other human breast cancer markers expressed by the MDA-231 cells in vitro, beta-gal activity was detected in the serum of mice with progressive disease. In conclusion, we describe an efficient model of breast cancer-induced osteolysis to quantify the effect of therapy on disease load and distribution, which could be beneficial in evaluating novel therapies for the treatment of the disease.

Abstract
We study the mathematical solutions to the kinetic equations arising from various simple ligand-receptor [corrected] models. Focusing on the prediction of the various models for the activity vs. concentration curve, we find that solutions to the kinetic equations arising from the so-called dimer model exhibit features observed in some experiments, most noticeably a distinct maximum in the activity curve.

Abstract
We evaluated prognostic factors for local recurrence-free survival, including expression of estrogen receptors, after surgical treatment of aggressive fibromatosis in 72 patients (53 women) having primary tumors between 1970 and 1998. Their median age at diagnosis was 31(1 month-77 years) years. 50 patients had extraabdominal and 22 abdominal fibromatosis. Median tumor size was 4 (1-27) cm. 8 patients were treated with an intralesional resection, 32 with marginal, 31 with wide and with radical resection. They were followed for a median of 8 (1-27) years. The overall and local recurrence-free 5-year survival rates were 98% and 73%, respectively. Univariate analysis identified age, compartmentalization and tumor size as prognostic factors for local recurrence-free survival as well as radiotherapy in extraabdominal tumors. In the multivariate analysis, tumor size > 4 cm, extracompartmental location, inadequate margin and age < 32 years were independent negative prognostic factors for local recurrence. None of the tumors expressed estrogen receptors. In conclusion, aggressive fibromatosis as a high local recurrence rate, but a good prognosis, since almost no patients die of their tumor.

Abstract
Adipose tissue, a reserve of energy, has played an essential role in mammalian evolution. Adipose tissue differs from other tissues in that its mass has considerable capacity to expand, which while beneficial in decreasing the risk of starvation, increases the risk of predation. Adipose tissue mass is thus under tight control in nondomestic species. Adipose tissue secretes a variety of factors, some of which (leptin, tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha, resistin) are thought to be involved in modulation of adipose mass. Leptin has a variety of functions, primarily targetting the hypothalamus where it acts to decrease appetite and increase energy expenditure. Leptin is also involved in the adaptations to fasting, and leptin is also required for normal reproductive and immune function. TNF alpha and resistin appear to have key paracrine roles, attenuating the anabolic effects of insulin on adipose tissue metabolism.

Abstract
We present a general technique to implement products of many qubit operators communicating via a joint harmonic oscillator degree of freedom in a quantum computer. By conditional displacements and rotations we can implement Hamiltonians which are trigonometric functions of qubit operators. With such operators we can effectively implement higher order gates such as Toffoli gates and C(n)-NOT gates, and we show that the entire Grover search algorithm can be implemented in a direct way.

Abstract
The possibility of creating and manipulating entangled states of systems of many particles is of significant interest for quantum information processing; such a capability could lead to new applications that rely on the basic principles of quantum mechanics. So far, up to four atoms have been entangled in a controlled way. A crucial requirement for the production of entangled states is that they can be considered pure at the single-particle level. Bose-Einstein condensates fulfil this requirement; hence it is natural to investigate whether they can also be used in some applications of quantum information. Here we propose a method to achieve substantial entanglement of a large number of atoms in a Bose-Einstein condensate. A single resonant laser pulse is applied to all the atoms in the condensate, which is then allowed to evolve freely; in this latter stage, collisional interactions produce entanglement between the atoms. The technique should be realizable with present technology.

Abstract
Aggressive fibromatosis is a rare soft tissue tumour with a high tendency to local recurrence. The patients often present with a deeply sited, firm mass with or without pain. Genetic, physical and endocrine factors seem to be important in the development of the disease. Patients with Gardner's syndrome and familial adenomatous polyposis have a higher risk of developing aggressive fibromatosis and often develop tumours in the mesentery, retroperitoneally or in the abdominal wall. Infantile fibromatosis is a variant of aggressive fibromatosis. The standard treatment of aggressive fibromatosis is surgical resection with wide free margin, in some cases supplemented with radiotherapy. Chemotherapy and hormonal treatment of non-resectable tumours has been described without convincing results and more data from clinical studies are needed.

Abstract
Carbohydrates such as alditols (polyols or sugar alcohols), monosaccharides and disaccharides are separated as anions by anion-exchange chromatography with a sodium hydroxide eluent, MA1 CarboPac column and pulsed amperometric detection. We report a high-pH anion-exchange chromatographic-pulsed amperometric detection (HPAEC-PAD) method that determines all the polyols used as food additives in food products and the most commonly found mono- and disaccharides on a routine basis. The linearity, repeatability, internal reproducibility and accuracy are described. The applicability of the method has been demonstrated by the analysis of 46 relevant samples and by participation twice in the Food Analysis Performance Assessment Scheme (FAPAS) testing programme for food additives.

Abstract
In recent years, analogs of human insulin have been engineered with the aim of improving therapy for people with diabetes. To ensure that the safety profile of the human hormone is not compromised by the molecular modifications, the toxico-pharmacological properties of insulin analogs should be carefully monitored. In this study, we compared the insulin and IGF-I receptor binding properties and metabolic and mitogenic potencies of insulin aspart (B28Asp human insulin), insulin lispro (B28Lys,B29Pro human insulin), insulin glargine (A21Gly,B31Arg,B32Arg human insulin), insulin detemir (NN304) [B29Lys(epsilon-tetradecanoyl), desB30 human insulin], and reference insulin analogs. Receptor affinities were measured using purified human receptors, insulin receptor dissociation rates were determined using Chinese hamster ovary cells overexpressing the human insulin receptor, metabolic potencies were evaluated using primary mouse adipocytes, and mitogenic potencies were determined in human osteosarcoma cells. Metabolic potencies correlated well with insulin receptor affinities. Mitogenic potencies in general correlated better with IGF-I receptor affinities than with insulin receptor off-rates. The 2 rapid-acting insulin analogs aspart and lispro resembled human insulin on all parameters, except for a slightly elevated IGF-I receptor affinity of lispro. In contrast, the 2 long-acting insulin analogs, glargine and detemir, differed significantly from human insulin. The combination of the B31B32diArg and A21Gly substitutions provided insulin glargine with a 6- to 8-fold increased IGF-I receptor affinity and mitogenic potency compared with human insulin. The attachment of a fatty acid chain to LysB29 provided insulin detemir with reduced receptor affinities and metabolic and mitogenic potencies but did not change the balance between mitogenic and metabolic potencies. The safety implications of the increased growth-stimulating potential of insulin glargine are unclear. The reduced in vitro potency of insulin detemir might explain why this analog is not as effective on a molar basis as human insulin in humans.

Abstract
A case of pseudotumour of the sternocleidomastoid muscle in a three-week old child is reported. The tumour resolved spontaneously within four months. Seventeen months later there was no sign of torticollis. This tumour is the most common cause of torticollis in newborn children. In 80-90% of the cases the tumour disappears within six months, the rest develop either a progressive or delayed torticollis, known as congenital muscular torticollis (CMT). Thus, CMT is a related condition, usually appearing at three to four years of age, and it may require surgical correction.

Abstract
Direct gene transfer to solid tissues or metastatic cancer cells requires vectors capable of in vivo transduction to specific cells. The predominant retroviral vectors of murine origin are inactivated by human complement, which precludes their use in vivo. Such inactivation does not take place with vectors based on human retroviruses. Murine retroviral vectors are also limited to proliferating cells, which human retroviruses are not. In this study we examined whether or not a vector using components from the human retroviruses HIV-1 and HTLV-1 could infect small-cell lung cancer cells and resting CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells. While HIV-1 itself was unable to infect cells lacking the CD4-membrane molecule, chimeric viral particles (pseudotype virus) with HIV-1 genome and HTLV-1 envelope components were able to infect both CD4-containing lymphocytic cells, CD4-negative tumour cells and hematopoietic stem cells. After infection with the pseudotype vector, the RNA genome was reverse transcribed and integrated. Transduction efficiency and gene expression under the HIV-1 LTR promoter in both tumour and stem cells were found to be of a similar or greater magnitude than in lymphocytic cells. These results suggest that gene transfer targeting proliferating as well as resting cells in vivo may be realized using components from human retroviruses.

Abstract
The effect of a pea cell wall fiber preparation with a high content of soluble fiber on fasting and postprandial blood lipids was investigated in young healthy subjects. Inclusion of 33 g pea fiber product/10 MJ (20 g dietary fiber) in a low fiber diet was tested in five men and six women (mean age 23 y) in a strictly controlled randomized cross-over intervention study over 2 wk separated by a 2-wk period of habitual diet consumption. No significant differences in fasting concentrations of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol or HDL cholesterol were observed, whereas total and VLDL triglyceride concentrations were lower when subjects consumed the pea fiber diet compared with the low fiber diet (P < 0.05). Postprandial response to pea fiber was studied in eight men. Addition of 12 g pea fiber product/ 10 MJ to a breakfast meal and 15 g/10 MJ to the following lunch meal resulted in significantly lower total triglyceride (P = 0.01), chylomicron triglyceride (P = 0.03) and insulin (P = 0.003) concentrations after the lunch meal compared with results following the same meal without pea fiber. No differences were observed in glycemic response. In conclusion, this source of dietary fiber lowered fasting and postprandial triglyceride concentrations but did not change fasting cholesterol concentrations.

Abstract
Analysis of restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of the lysozyme gene cluster was performed in a Norwegian bovine family segregating a single dominant Mendelian factor for high lysozyme activity in serum. An RFLP site with allelic bands of 16kb and 5.9 kb turned out to be linked to the locus for the high lysozyme activity factor with a lod score of 6.8 at a recombination fraction of 3.4%. This implies that we have revealed a genetic marker for the high lysozyme activity trait.

Abstract
A retrospective study of all operations done for duodenal or stomach peptic ulcers in 1976-1978 and 1986-1988 was performed so as to evaluate elective and emergency surgery before and after the introduction of H2-receptor antagonists and to evaluate the influence of medical treatment on surgical training in ulcer surgery. The number of elective operations fell by 80%, the number of emergency operations was unchanged. In 1986-1988 the number of elderly patients who underwent emergency surgery increased, no change in age was seen in elective surgery. The rate of complications was unchanged after elective operations, but has increased considerably after emergency surgery in 1986-1988. Surgeons in training performed a greater share of operations, both elective and emergency, but without an increase in complications. The introduction of H2-receptor antagonists has not reduced the number of emergency operations.

Abstract
Seventy-two hospitalized patients with alcohol withdrawal symptoms were treated with either carbamazepine (Tegretol) or barbital ( Diemal ) in a randomized, double-blind trial. The dose of trial medication as well as the duration of treatment was individual, corresponding to the conventional treatment schedule. During the trial period daily records were kept of target withdrawal symptoms, global evaluation, the patient's subjective feeling and unwanted effects. Sixty patients completed the treatment successfully. The two treatment groups were homogeneous as regards patient characteristics, pre-treatment disease severity and drop-out rate. No statistically significant differences were found in efficacy between the two treatments, and both drugs were well tolerated. It is concluded that carbamazepine is a valuable alternative drug in the treatment of mild and moderate alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
