Source-based health risk assessment of heavy metal contamination in soil: a case study from a polymetallic mining region in Southeastern Hubei, Central China. ENVIRONMENTAL GEOCHEMISTRY AND HEALTH 2023; 46:12. Abstract
To conduct a precise health risk assessment of heavy metals (HMs) in soil, it is imperative to ascertain the primary sources of potential health risks. In this study, we conducted comprehensive measurements of HMs, specifically focusing on the accumulation of Cu, Cd, Sb, Zn, and Pb in local soil, which may pose threats to environmental quality. To achieve our objective, we employed a method that combines positive matrix factorization with a health risk assessment model to quantify the health risks associated with specific sources. The results obtained from the geo-accumulation index indicate that the majority of HMs found in the local soil are influenced by anthropogenic activities. Among these sources, local industrial-related activities contributed the largest proportion of HMs to the soil at 34.7%, followed by natural sources at 28.7%, mining and metallurgy-related activities at 28.2%, and traffic-related activities at 8.40%. Although the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks associated with individual HMs were found to be below safety thresholds, the cumulative health risks stemming from total HMs exceeded safety limits for children. Moreover, the unacceptable health risks for children originating from industrial-related activities, natural sources, and mining and metallurgy-related activities were primarily concentrated in proximity to mining sites and industrial areas within the local region. This investigation furnishes valuable insights that can aid governmental authorities in formulating precise control policies to mitigate health threats posed by soils in polymetallic mining areas.

A hybrid approach for low-carbon transportation system analysis: integrating CRITIC-DEMATEL and deep learning features. INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY : IJEST 2023:1-14. [PMID: 37360563 PMCID: PMC10250180 DOI: 10.1007/s13762-023-04995-6] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/12/2022] [Revised: 04/24/2023] [Accepted: 05/08/2023] [Indexed: 06/28/2023]
Abstract
As supply chains, logistics, and transportation activities continue to play a significant role in China's economic and social developments, concerns around energy consumption and carbon emissions are becoming increasingly prevalent. In light of sustainable development goals and the trend toward sustainable or green transportation, there is a need to minimize the environmental impact of these activities. To address this need, the government of China has made efforts to promote low-carbon transportation systems. This study aims to assess the development of low-carbon transportation systems in a case study in China using a hybrid approach based on the Criteria Importance Through Intercriteria Correlation (CRITIC), Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) and deep learning features. The proposed method provides an accurate quantitative assessment of low-carbon transportation development levels, identifies the key influencing factors, and sorts out the inner connection among the factors. The CRITIC weight matrix is used to obtain the weight ratio, reducing the subjective color of the DEMATEL method. The weighting results are then corrected using an artificial neural network to make the weighting more accurate and objective. To validate our hybrid method, a numerical example in China is applied, and sensitivity analysis is conducted to show the impact of our main parameters and analyze the efficiency of our hybrid method. Overall, the proposed approach offers a novel method for assessing low-carbon transportation development and identifying key factors in China. The results of this study can be used to inform policy and decision-making to promote sustainable transportation systems in China and beyond.

FAM83A promotes the progression and metastasis of human pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors by inducing the epithelial-mesenchymal transition via the PI3K/AKT and ERK pathways. J Endocrinol Invest 2022; 46:1115-1130. Abstract
PURPOSE Family with sequence similarity 83, member A (FAM83A) has been reported to play an important role in cancer progression and metastasis. The purpose of this study was to clarify the role and mechanism of FAM83A in pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PanNETs). METHODS PanNET specimens and adjacent nontumor pancreatic tissues obtained from 68 patients who underwent curative surgery for PanNETs were assessed for FAM83A expression using immunochemical staining. The relationships between FAM83A expression, clinicopathological parameters and prognosis were statistically analyzed. PanNET cell lines were used to study the role of FAM83A in the progression and metastasis of PanNETs in vitro and in vivo. RESULTS FAM83A was overexpressed in PanNET specimens compared with adjacent nontumor tissues. Furthermore, FAM83A expression was closely associated with lymph node metastasis (P = 0.02), perineural invasion (P = 0.001), WHO classification (P = 0.039), AJCC stage (P = 0.01) and shorter disease-free survival in patients with PanNETs (P < 0.001). FAM83A overexpression effectively promoted PanNET cell proliferation, migration, invasion and growth both in vitro and in vivo, whereas FAM83A inhibition exerted the opposite effects. Subsequent mechanistic investigations revealed that FAM83A promotes the progression and metastasis of PanNETs by inducing epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) via the PI3K/AKT and ERK pathways. CONCLUSIONS FAM83A plays an important role in the progression and metastasis of PanNET by inducing the EMT via the activation of the ERK and PI3K/AKT pathways and may serve as a valuable molecular target in PanNET treatment.

Impact of short-term control measures on air quality: A case study during the 7th Military World Games in central China. ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION (BARKING, ESSEX : 1987) 2022; 311:119998. [PMID: 36007790 DOI: 10.1016/j.envpol.2022.119998] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 05/12/2022] [Revised: 08/01/2022] [Accepted: 08/15/2022] [Indexed: 06/15/2023]
Abstract
The 7th Military World Games held in Wuhan (WH) in Oct 2019 provided an opportunity to clarify the impact of short-term control measures on air quality. Fine particulate matters (PM2.5) were collected in WH, Huangshi (HS), and Huanggang (HG) during the control (Oct 13-28, 2019) and non-control periods (Oct 29- Nov 5, 2019). The results showed that air quality was good during the control period, with the concentrations of PM2.5 and gaseous pollutants being below the Grade Ⅱ of China Ambient Air Quality Standard. Concentrations of PM2.5 and its major chemical components in the control period were significantly lower than those in the non-control period, with reductions ranging from 17% (trace elements) to 46% (elemental carbon). However, higher contributions of secondary components such as SO42-, NO3-, NH4+ and secondary organic carbon (SOC) to PM2.5 were observed during the control period, suggesting the important role of secondary transformation. Potential source contribution function (PSCF) of PM2.5 showed that the main source regions were potentially located in surrounding cities Hubei Province, but regional transport can't be ignored. Six sources were identified by positive matrix factorization (PMF) for both control and non-control period. The contributions of combustion emissions and vehicle emissions were amplified in the control period, while the contribution of construction dust increased significantly when the control measures ended. Emission reductions contributed more to PM2.5 concentration decrease in WH (55%) than that in HS (51%) and HG (49%), which was consistent with the stricter control measures implemented in WH. These results indicated that short-term controls were effective at lowering PM2.5 concentration. However, the elevated contributions of secondary aerosols and the influence of regional transport on the study areas also need to be paid attention for air quality improvement in the future.

Abstract
To develop accurate air pollution control policies, it is necessary to determine the sources of different types of fugitive dust in mining and metallurgy areas. A method integrating principal component analysis and a positive matrix factorization model was used to identify the potential sources of heavy metals (HMs) in five different types of fugitive dust. The results showed accumulation of Mn, Fe, and Cu can be caused by natural geological processes, which contributed 38.55% of HMs. The Ni and Co can be released from multiple transport pathways and accumulated through local deposition, which contributed 29.27%. Mining-related activities contributed 20.11% of the HMs and showed a relatively high accumulation of As, Sn, Zn, and Cr, while traffic-related emissions contributed the rest of the HMs and were responsible for the enrichment in Pb and Cd. The co-applied source-identification models improved the precision of the identification of sources, which revealed that the local geological background and mining-related activities were mainly responsible for the accumulation of HMs in the area. The findings can help the government develop targeted control strategies for HM dispersion efficiency.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess the pollution levels, sources, and human health risks of heavy metals in street dust from a typical industrial district in Wuhan City, Central China. In total, 47 street dust samples were collected from the major traffic arteries and streets around Wuhan Iron and Steel (Group) Company (WISC) in Qingshan District, Wuhan. The concentrations of heavy metals (Cr, Mn, Ni, Zn, Fe, Cu, and Cd) in street dust were determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Results indicated that the mean concentrations of Zn (249.71 mg/kg), Cu (51.15 mg/kg), and Cd (0.86 mg/kg) in street dust were higher than their corresponding soil background values in Hubei Province. Heavy metal enrichment is closely related to urban transportation and industrial production. The pollution level of heavy metals in street dust was assessed using the geo-accumulation method (Igeo) and potential ecological risk assessment (PERI). Based on the Igeo value, Cr, Mn, Fe, and Ni showed no pollution, Zn and Cu showed light to moderate contamination, and Cd showed moderate contamination. The PERI values of heavy metals in street dust ranged between 76.70 and 7027.28, which represents a medium to high potential ecological risk. Principal component analysis showed that the sources of heavy metals in street dust were mainly influenced by anthropogenic activities. Among the studied metals, Cu, Cr, Zn, Fe, and Mn mainly come from industrial processes, while Ni and Cd come from traffic exhaust. The non-carcinogenic risk indexes of heavy metals for children and adults are ranked as Cr > Cu > Ni > Cd > Zn. The health risks to children through the different exposure pathways are higher than those for adults. Hand-to-mouth intake is the riskiest exposure pathway for non-carcinogenic risk. In addition, Cr, Ni, and Cd do not pose a carcinogenic risk for the residents.

Abstract
Knowledge from the negative impacts of the counties' anthropogenic activities on soil pollution was of great significance in China, and valuable information was urgently needed for the control and remediation of soil pollution. The current pollution levels of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Cd, Zn, Ni, and Cr) in farmland soils were investigated in Yangxin County, Hubei Province, central China. The comprehensive results of quantitative comparison and evaluation in this study showed that Cu (144.9 ± 298.6 mg kg-1), Cd (2.9 ± 1.6 mg kg-1), and Ni (137.0 ± 111.0 mg kg-1) posed higher pollution risks to public and ecosystem health, which were higher than the corresponding soil background values. The combined results of geostatistics, spatial and statistical analysis indicated that studied heavy metals were mainly attributed to agricultural, traffic and industrial induced pollution. Overall, urgent attention should be paid to the risk reduction and management of soil Cu, Cd, and Ni pollution in the study area.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in railway stations dust of the mega traffic hub city, central China: Human health risk and relationship with black carbon. ECOTOXICOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY 2020; 205:111155. Abstract
Twenty dust samples collected from Wuchang and Wuhan Railway Stations, the biggest transport stations in the mega traffic hub city in Central China, were analyzed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to investigate the concentration, sources apportionment, and relationship with black carbon (BC) and assess the health risk. The results suggested that the concentrations of PAHs, BC and TOC in Wuhan Railway Station (WHRS) (PAHs = 5940 ± 1920 ng g-1, BC = 53.2 ± 23.1 mg g-1 and TOC = 80.7 ± 44.4) were twice higher than those in Wuchang Railway Station (WCRS) (PAHs = 2580 ± 1630 ng g-1, BC = 20.4 ± 14.3 mg g-1 and TOC = 33.9 ± 20.1 mg g-1). Moreover, the 3 - and 4 - rings PAHs were major PAHs in railway station dust. The composition pattern of PAHs in these railway station dusts had a common characteristic with HMW-PAHs contribution. The results of source identification revealed that different local development features and energy consumption of trains would influence the sources of PAHs and BC. PAHs and BC were most likely related to industrial activities in WHRS. Coal and biomass combustion may influence the PAHs components and BC distribution in WCRS. Moreover, BC had played an important role in retaining PAHs in urban railway stations. Especially in WHRS, BC would more likely to absorb the high molecular weight PAHs, such as 4 -ring (p<0.05), 5 -ring (p<0.05) and 6 -ring (p<0.05) PAHs; while BC just played limited roles in the binding of volatile and semi-volatile organic pollutants, such as 2 -ring and 3 -ring PAHs. With the coexistence of BC and PAHs, passengers would face significant potential health risks by exposure to toxic dust in railway stations, especially for children. The cancer risk in WHRS was almost twice higher than that in WCRS, and it would tend to be stable by a semi-confined structure in the platform area.

Abstract
As one of the most densely innervated tissues, the dental pulp contains abundant nerve fibres, including sensory, sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve fibres. Studies in animal models and human patients with pulpitis have revealed distinct alterations in protein expression and histological appearance in all types of dental nerve fibres. Various molecules secreted by neurons, such as classical neurotransmitters, neuropeptides and amino acids, not only contribute to the induction, sensitization and maintenance of tooth pain, but also regulate non-neuronal cells, including fibroblasts, odontoblasts, immune cells and vascular endothelial cells. Dental nerves are particularly important for the microcirculatory and immune responses in pulpitis via their release of a variety of functional substances. Further, nerve fibres are found to be involved in dental soft and hard tissue repair. Thus, understanding how dental nerves participate in pulpitis could have important clinical ramifications for endodontic treatment. In this review, the roles of dental nerves in regulating pulpal inflammatory processes are highlighted and their implications for future research on this topic are discussed.

Abstract
It is essential to dissect an adequate number of lymph nodes (LNs) to ensure staging accuracy during esophagectomy with or without neoadjuvant therapy. We developed a statistical model to quantify the probability of precise nodal staging based on previous studies. Esophageal cancer patients who underwent esophagectomy were retrospectively reviewed in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. A β-binomial distribution was adopted to estimate the number of understaged patients based on the numbers of positive and examined LNs. Using 6,252 patients, we estimated a 90% confidence of accurate N0 staging could be achieved by examining 17 LNs without neoadjuvant therapy. To obtain similar accuracy in N1 and N2, 20 and 25 LNs should be examined. For patients with neoadjuvant therapy, 18, 19, and 28 LNs could achieve the same accuracy. Staging accuracy was a significant prognostic factor. We found when 90% confidence had been achieved, patient survival did not improve with more LNs examined and the ratio and log odds of positive LNs did not have significant prognostic values. The statistical model we developed for precise staging in patients with different N stages is of great value in guiding lymphadenectomy. It provided risk assessment for underestimated LN metastases and guided subsequent adjuvant treatment.

Abstract
During the summer of 2015, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the atmosphere were collected by passive air samplers in typical urban-rural fringe of Wuhan-Ezhou region, Central China. The results showed that 16 kinds of PAHs were ubiquitous with the concentrations of ∑16PAHs from 14.69 to 136.30 ng·m-3 and the mean concentration of 43.03 ng·m-3. Phenanthrene (Phe), fluoranthene (Fla) and pyrene (Pyr) were major components, which accounted for 81% of ∑16PAHs. PAHs atmospheric concentrations presented obvious spatial variation, being significantly related to geographical environment and influenced by anthropogenic activity. Air-soil exchange status of PAHs was discussed according to the fugacity fraction (ff). The results showed that HMW-PAHs behaved as net deposition, while LMW-PAHs were more likely to establish dynamic equilibrium between atmosphere and soil than MMW-PAHs and HMW-PAHs. For some PAHs, such as acenaphthylene (Acy) and anthracene (Ant), the soil acted as second sources of them.

Polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAHs, oxygenated PAHs, nitrated PAHs and azaarenes) in soils from China and their relationship with geographic location, land use and soil carbon fractions. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2019; 690:1268-1276. Abstract
The assessment of risks arising from polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs), particularly from the polar PACs [azaarenes (AZAs), oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs), nitrated PAHs (NPAHs)] requires us to understand the drivers of their spatial distribution. We determined the concentrations of 29 PAHs, 4 AZAs, 15 OPAHs and 11 NPAHs and their relationships with land use (urban vs. rural and forest vs. agriculture), climate (Qinghai-Tibetan plateau, temperate, sub tropical and tropical) and three C fractions (soil organic C, char, soot) in 36 mineral topsoils (0-5 cm) of China. The average concentrations±standard deviation of the Σ29PAHs, Σ16PAHs, Σ4AZAs, Σ15OPAHs and Σ11NPAHs were 352 ± 283, 206 ± 215, 5.7 ± 3.7, 108 ± 66.8 and 3.2 ± 3.4 ng g-1, respectively. PAH, OPAH, NPAH and AZA concentrations were frequently not correlated within or across the regions reflecting different sources and turnover of PAHs and their derivatives. Temperate urban soils showed the highest and tropical rural soils the lowest concentrations of PACs. Forest soils had higher PACs concentrations than agricultural soils. Longitude correlated positively with the ∑29PAHs concentrations, because of increasing emissions of PAHs from East to West. The tropical and plateau regions with the lowest PAH concentrations, were dominated by low molecular weight PAHs (LMW-PAHs) with LMW/high molecular weight (HMW)-PAHs ratios >1, while the other two climatic regions with more industrial sites showed the opposite. Latitude correlated with NPAHs likely because of enhanced formation by photochemical reactions during transport in the atmosphere. The concentrations of the ∑29PAHs, ∑4AZAs, ∑15OPAHs, ∑11NPAHs and their individual components were only occasionally correlated with those of carbon fractions (soil organic C, soot and char) suggesting a small role of soil C pool properties in driving PACs concentrations. Our results demonstrate that the strongest drivers of PACs concentrations are land use and distance to PAC emission sources followed by climate and size and properties of the soil organic C pool.

Historical variation of black carbon and PAHs over the last ~200 years in central North China: Evidence from lake sediment records. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2019; 690:891-899. Abstract
As the largest coal-producing province in China, the coal production of Shanxi Province accounts for one third of the country's total. Thus it is of great importance to study the pollution history of typical pollutants in Shanxi Province and their links with energy usage in North China. Sediment cores from two relatively remote lakes in central North China were retrieved to investigate historical evolutions of black carbon (BC) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the last ~200 years. The two records show several-fold increases in both concentrations and depositional fluxes of BC, char, soot, and PAHs in recent five decades, which were associated with the influence of anthropogenic activities resulting from socio-economic development in Shanxi Province. However, after ~2000 their fluxes decreased sharply due to China's effort on environmental protection. These changes indicate that atmospheric BC and PAHs loads in the region were affected significantly by recent anthropogenic activities and environmental policies. Ratios of individual PAHs and char/soot indicate pyrogenic sources of these increased pollutants in recent decades, with coking industry and coal combustion as the two major sources. Significant positive correlations between BC and PAHs were observed in both cores of Lake Gonghai and Lake Mayinghai, indicating that they were likely co-transported by BC particles from similar sources. This study provides new and important understanding of the atmospheric pollution history of BC and PAHs in North China.

Characterization of carbonaceous fractions in PM 2.5 and PM 10 over a typical industrial city in central China. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND POLLUTION RESEARCH INTERNATIONAL 2019; 26:16855-16867. [PMID: 29047059 DOI: 10.1007/s11356-017-9970-9] [Citation(s) in RCA: 5] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 05/01/2017] [Accepted: 08/15/2017] [Indexed: 05/21/2023]
Abstract
Aerosol samples of PM2.5 and PM10 were collected every 6 days from March 2012 to February 2013 in Huangshi, a typical industrial city in central China, to investigate the characteristics, relationships, and sources of carbonaceous species. The PM2.5 and PM10 samples were analyzed for organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), char, and soot using the thermal/optical reflectance (TOR) method following the IMPROVE_A protocol. PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations ranged from 29.37 to 501.43 μg m-3 and from 50.42 to 330.07 μg m-3, with average levels of 104.90 and 151.23 μg m-3, respectively. The 24-h average level of PM2.5 was about three times the US EPA standard of 35 μg m-3, and significantly exceeds the Class II National Air Quality Standard of China of 75 μg m-3. The seasonal cycles of PM mass and OC concentrations were higher during winter than in summer. EC and char concentrations were generally highest during winter but lowest in spring, while higher soot concentrations occurred in summer. This seasonal variation could be attributed to different seasonal meteorological conditions and changes in source contributions. Strong correlations between OC and EC were found for both PM2.5 and PM10 in winter and fall, while char and soot showed a moderate correlation in summer and winter. The average OC/EC ratios were 5.11 and 4.46 for PM2.5 and PM10, respectively, with individual OC/EC ratios nearly always exceeding 2.0. Higher char/soot ratios during the four seasons indicated that coal combustion and biomass burning were the major sources for carbonaceous aerosol in Huangshi. Contrary to expectations, secondary organic carbon (SOC) which is estimated using the EC tracer method exhibited spring maximum and summer minimum, suggesting that photochemical activity is not a leading factor in the formation of secondary organic aerosols in the study area. The contribution of SOC to OC concentration for PM2.5 and PM10 were 47.33 and 45.38%, respectively, implying that SOC was an important component of OC mass. The serious air pollution in haze-fog episode was strongly correlated with the emissions of pollutants from biomass burning and the meteorological conditions.

Abstract
PM2.5 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter <2.5 μm) samples were collected in Huangshi, central China, from March 2012 to February 2013 and were analyzed for dicarboxylic acids (diacids) and related compounds (DARCs). Oxalic acid (C2; 416 ng m-3) was the most abundant species, followed by phthalic (Ph; 122 ng m-3), terephthalic (tPh; 116 ng m-3), succinic (C4; 70.4 ng m-3), azelaic (C9; 67.9 ng m-3), and adipic (C6; 57.8 ng m-3) acids. Relatively high abundances of Ph and tPh differed from the distribution in urban and marine aerosols, indicating contributions from nearby anthropogenic sources. Glyoxylic acid (ωC2; 41.4 ng m-3) was the dominant oxoacid, followed by 9-oxononanoic (ωC9; 40.8 ng m-3) and pyruvic (Pyr; 24.1 ng m-3) acids. Glyoxal (Gly; 35.5 ng m-3) was the dominant α-dicarbonyl. Highest average concentrations were found for C2, ωC2, and C9 in autumn, for C4, for Pyr and C6 in spring, for Ph, ωC9, and Gly in summer, whereas the lowest values were observed in winter. Seasonal variations and correlation coefficients of DARCs demonstrate that both primary emissions and secondary production are important sources. Principal component analysis of selected DARCs species suggests that a mixing of air masses from anthropogenic and biogenic sources contribute to the Huangshi aerosols. Implications: Both primary emissions and secondary production are important sources of diacids and related compounds in PM2.5 from Huangshi, central China. Principal component analysis of selected diacids in Huangshi aerosols suggests that mixing of air masses from anthropogenic and biogenic sources contribute to ambient aerosols in central China.

Abstract
In this study, we explored the gene and microRNA (miRNA) expressions profile of esophageal carcinoma. The expression data for messenger RNAs and miRNAs in normal and cancerous esophageal tissues were obtained from the Cancer Genome Atlas database and then the differentially expressed genes and miRNAs were identified. As a result, we identified 2962 genes and 45 miRNAs differentially expressed in esophageal carcinoma compared with normal esophageal tissues. Subsequently, the altered gene functions and signaling pathways were investigated using gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses, and these differentially expressed genes were significantly enriched in the cell cycle, cell migration, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and toll-like receptor signaling pathway, and so on. Then the regulatory relationships between the differentially expressed miRNAs and genes were examined with Targetscan and Miranda, and the potential target sites of transcription factors (TFs) in the promoter regions of these miRNAs and genes were identified using the TRANSFAC database. Finally the TF-miRNA-gene network in esophageal cancer was established, summarizing the regulatory links among the TFs, differentially expressed miRNAs and differentially expressed genes. Factors such as core promoter-binding protein (CPBP), nuclear factor of activated T-cells 1 (NFAT-1), miR-30c-5p, were located in the central hub of this network, highlighting their vital roles in esophageal tumorigenesis. These findings may extend our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying esophageal carcinoma and promote new perspectives for prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

Preliminary Assessment of Health Risks of Potentially Toxic Elements in Settled Dust over Beijing Urban Area. INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH AND PUBLIC HEALTH 2016; 13:ijerph13050491. Abstract
To examine levels, health risks, sources, and spatial distributions of potentially toxic elements in settled dust over Beijing urban area, 62 samples were collected mostly from residential building outdoor surfaces, and their <63 μm fractions were measured for 12 potentially toxic elements. The results show that V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, and Ba in dust are from predominantly natural sources, whereas Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sb, and Pb mostly originate from anthropogenic sources. Exposure to these elements in dust has significant non-cancer risks to children but insignificant to adults. Cancer risks of Cr, Co, Ni, As, and Cd via inhalation and dermal contact are below the threshold of 10(-6)-10(-4) but As via dust ingestion shows a tolerable risk. The non-cancer risks to children are contributed mainly (75%) by As, Pb, and Sb, and dominantly (92%) via dust ingestion, with relatively higher risks mainly occurring in the eastern and northeastern Beijing urban areas. Although Cd, Zn, and Cu in dust are heavily affected by anthropogenic sources, their health risks are insignificant. Source appointments suggest that coal burning emissions, the dominant source of As, are likely the largest contributors to the health risk, and traffic-related and industrial emissions are also important because they contribute most of the Pb and Sb in dust.

Abstract
Thirty atmospheric dustfall samples collected from an industrial corridor in Hubei Province, central China, were analyzed for 16 USEPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to investigate their concentrations, spatial distributions, sources, and health risks. Total PAH concentrations (ΣPAHs) ranged from 1.72 to 13.17 µg/g and averaged 4.91 µg/g. High molecular weight (4-5 rings) PAHs averaged 59.67% of the ΣPAHs. Individual PAH concentrations were not significantly correlated with total organic carbon, possibly due to the semi-continuous inputs from anthropogenic sources. Source identification studies suggest that the PAHs were mainly from motor vehicles and biomass/coal combustion. The incremental lifetime cancer risks associated with exposure to PAHs in the dustfall ranged from 10(-4) to 10(-6); these indicate potentially serious carcinogenic risks for exposed populations in the industrial corridor.

Abstract
Urban road dusts are carriers of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) and are therefore considered to be a major source of contamination of other environmental compartments and a source of exposure to PACs for urban populations. We determined the occurrence, composition pattern and sources of several PACs (29 alkyl- and parent-PAHs, 15 oxygenated-PAHs (OPAHs), 4 azaarenes (AZAs), and 11 nitrated-PAHs (NPAHs)) in twenty urban road dusts and six suburban surface soils (0-5cm) from Xi'an, central China. The average concentrations of ∑29PAHs, ∑4AZAs, ∑15OPAHs, and ∑11NPAHs were 15767, 673, 4754, and 885 n gg(-1) in road dusts and 2067, 784, 854, and 118 ng g(-1) in surface soils, respectively. The concentrations of most individual PACs were higher in street dusts than suburban soils, particularly for PACs with molecular weight>192 g mol(-1). The enrichment factors of individual PACs were significantly positively correlated with log KOA and log KOW, indicating an increasing deposition and co-sorption of the PACs in urban dusts with decreasing volatility and increasing hydrophobicity. Significant correlations between the concentrations of individual and sum of PACs, carbon fractions (soot and char), and source-characteristic PACs (combustion-derived PAHs and retene, etc.), indicated that PAHs, OPAHs and AZAs were mostly directly emitted from combustion activities and had similar post-emission fates, but NPAHs were possibly more intensely photolyzed after deposition as well as being emitted from vehicle exhaust sources. The incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) resulting from exposure to urban dust bound-PACs was higher than 10(-6), indicating a non-negligible cancer risk to residents of Xi'an.

Spatial distributions and sequestrations of organic carbon and black carbon in soils from the Chinese Loess Plateau. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2013; 465:255-266. Abstract
Concentrations of soil organic carbon (SOC), black carbon (BC), char, and soot in topsoils (0-20 cm) and vertical soil profiles (0-100 cm) from the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) were investigated. Objectives of the study were to establish the spatial distributions and estimate the sequestrations of these substances. The SOC, BC, char and soot concentrations were higher in the eastern and southeastern parts of the plateau and lower in the north, which is consistent with the patterns of economic development and energy consumption. The highest average SOC concentration was found in the clayey loess zone, followed by the loess and sandy loess zones. Similar trends were observed for BC, char and soot, suggesting interactions with clay and silt are potentially important influences on OC and BC. The SOC contents in topsoils varied from 0.31 to 51.81 g kg(-1), with a mean value of 6.54 g kg(-1), while BC and char concentrations were 0.02 to 5.5 g kg(-1) and 0.003 to 4.19 g kg(-1), respectively, and soot ranged from 0.01 to 1.32 g kg(-1). Unlike SOC, both BC and char decreased with soil depth, whereas soot showed little variation with depth. BC and char were correlated in the topsoils, and both correlated moderately well with SOC (R(2)=0.60) and soot (R(2)=0.53). The SOC pools sequestered in the 0 to 20 cm and 0 to 100 cm depths were estimated to be 0.741 and 3.63 Pg, respectively, and the BC pools sequestered in the 0 to 20 cm and 0 to 100 cm depths were 0.073 and 0.456 Pg, respectively. Therefore the quantity of carbon stored in the sediments of the CLP evidently exceeds 10(9) tons. The char contained in the upper 20 cm layer was 0.053 Pg, which amounted to 72.5% of the BC in that layer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Osteosarcoma is a kind of highly malignant primary bone tumor which most common in the teenage, and holds strong aggressive, earlier organs metastases mainly to lung, prone to postoperative recur. Therefore for osteosarcoma, invasion and transfer mechanism and related factors' interaction remains to be a key research subject. AIM We aim to find biological molecules marker can be used for osteosarcoma diagnosis through contrast of osteosarcoma sample and normal tissue samples. MATERIALS AND METHODS This analysis using human osteosarcoma expression profile data and three lesions normal tissue samples (liver, kidneys, lymph) expression data and compare them, and find significant specifically expressed genes, according to their function. RESULTS Research shows that the cancer cell proliferation, invasion, transfer and recurrent process involve many factors interaction, of which angiogenesis is the necessary condition of tumor growth, transfer and the recurrence. CONCLUSIONS Now the most important positive regulatory factor of angiogenesis is VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) and bFGF (basic fibroblast growth factor). Both of them are with a wide variety and close relationship of tumor angiogenesis and progress.

Pyruvate kinase M2 is highly correlated with the differentiation and the prognosis of esophageal squamous cell cancer. Dis Esophagus 2013; 26:746-53. Abstract
It's frequently stated that the pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2) and Warburg effect are important for cancer development by accumulating more raw materials for macromolecule biosynthesis. However, the correlation between PKM2 and cancer is poorly reported. Here, we investigated the PKM2 expression in esophageal squamous cell cancer (ESCC). We observed that the expression of PKM2 was much higher in ESCC than in control normal tissue, and it is highly associated with many clinical features and prognosis. Specially, we found that the expression of PKM2 was closely related to the differentiation state of ESCC, and we further confirmed this discovery in vitro. As a result, out data indicated that PKM2 might be a useful indicator for determining the survival of patients with ESCC. Considering previous researches on the link among PKM2, Warburg effect, and differentiation, our study inferred the direct roles of PKM2 and Warburg effect in the differentiation of cancer cells rather than only providing synthetic intermediates for the promotion of cancer's progression.

Abstract
Three techniques were used to measure black carbon (BC) in samples from Chinese loess-paleosol sequences. The results obtained by (1) chemo-thermal oxidation (CTO, performed two ways), (2) acid dichromate oxidation (Cr2O7), and (3) thermal-optical reflectance (TOR) were intercompared because prior studies have shown that the methods can yield disparate results. BC concentrations did vary among the methods, most likely because they measured different components of the BC continuum, but the high-temperature BC (soot) determined by CTO was correlated with the BC and soot obtained by TOR. The CTO and TOR methods both yielded statistically significant linear relationships for loess and lake sediments that had incremental additions of a standard (SRM-1649a). The results also showed that charred material was more abundant in these test sediments than soot carbon. Data for BC in Luochuan loess generated using TOR showed a trend similar to that of magnetic susceptibility, that is, high BC and large susceptibilities during the last interglacial and low values for both variables in the last glacial. The results thus indicate that the TOR method is well suited for studies of sedimentary materials and that more biomass burned during the last interglacial than in the last glacial.

Abstract
Administrative data are readily available, inexpensive, computer readable, and cover large populations. Despite coding irregularities and limited clinical details, administrative data supplemented by tools such as the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) patient safety indicators (PSIs) could serve as a screen for potential patient safety problems that merit further investigation, offer valuable insights into adverse impacts and risks of medical errors and, to some extent, provide benchmarks for tracking progress in patient safety efforts at local, state, or national levels.

Potentially inappropriate medication use in the community-dwelling elderly: findings from the 1996 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey. JAMA 2001; 286:2823-9. Abstract
CONTEXT Inappropriate medication use is a major patient safety concern, especially for the elderly population. Using explicit criteria, prior studies have found that 23.5% and 17.5% of the US community-dwelling elderly population used at least 1 of 20 potentially inappropriate medications in 1987 and 1992, respectively. OBJECTIVES To determine the prevalence of potentially inappropriate medication use in community-dwelling elderly persons in 1996, to assess trends over 10 years, categorize inappropriate medication use according to explicit criteria, and to examine risk factors for inappropriate medication use. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS Respondents aged 65 years or older (n = 2455) to the 1996 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, a nationally representative survey of the US noninstitutionalized population were included. A 7-member expert panel was convened to categorize inappropriate medications. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Prevalence of use of 33 potentially inappropriate medications. RESULTS In 1996, 21.3% (95% confidence interval [CI], 19.5%-23.1%) of community-dwelling elderly patients in the United States received at least 1 of 33 potentially inappropriate medications. Using the expert panel's classifications, about 2.6% of elderly patients (95% CI, 2.0%-3.2%) used at least 1 of the 11 medications that should always be avoided by elderly patients; 9.1% (95% CI, 7.9%-10.3%) used at least 1 of the 8 that would rarely be appropriate; and 13.3% (95% CI, 11.7%-14.9%) used at least 1 of the 14 medications that have some indications but are often misused. Use of some inappropriate medications declined between 1987 and 1996. Persons with poor health and more prescriptions had a significantly higher risk of inappropriate medication use. CONCLUSIONS Overall inappropriate medication use in elderly patients remains a serious problem. Despite challenges in using explicit criteria for assessing inappropriate medications for elderly patients, such criteria can be applied to population-based surveys to identify opportunities to improve quality of care and patient safety. Enhancements of existing data sources to include dosage, duration, and indication may augment national improvement and monitoring efforts.

OBJECTIVE To develop Patient Safety Indicators (PSI) to identify potential in-hospital patient safety problems for the purpose of quality improvement. DATA SOURCE/STUDY DESIGN The data source was 2,400,000 discharge records in the 1997 New York State Inpatient Database. PSI algorithms were developed using systematic literature reviews of indicators and hand searches of the ICD-9-CM code book. The prevalence of PSI events and associations between PSI events and patient-level and hospital-level characteristics, length of stay, in-hospital mortality, and hospital charges were examined. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS PSIs were developed for 12 distinct clinical situations and an overall summary measure. The 1997 event rates per 10,000 discharges varied from 1.1 for foreign bodies left during procedure to 84.7 for birth traumas. Discharge records with PSI events had twofold to threefold longer hospital stays, twofold to 20-fold higher rates of in-hospital mortality, and twofold to eightfold higher total charges than records without PSI events. Multivariate logistic regression revealed that PSI events were primarily associated with increasing age (p < .001), hospitals performing more inpatient surgery (p < .001), and hospitals with higher percentage of beds in intensive care units (p < .001). CONCLUSIONS The PSIs provide an efficient and user-friendly tool to identify potential inhospital patient safety problems for targeted institution-level quality improvement efforts. Until better error-reporting systems are developed the PSIs can serve to shed light on the problem of medical errors not limited solely to mortality because of errors.

Induction of antibodies against GM2 ganglioside by immunizing melanoma patients using GM2-keyhole limpet hemocyanin + QS21 vaccine: a dose-response study. Clin Cancer Res 2000; 6:874-9. Abstract
In a previous randomized Phase III trial (P. O. Livingston et al, J. Clin. Oncol., 12: 1036-1044, 1994), we demonstrated that immunization with GM2 and bacille Calmette-Guerin reduced the risk of relapse in stage III melanoma patients who were free of disease after surgical resection and who had no preexisting anti-GM2 antibodies. That vaccine formulation induced IgM anti-GM2 antibodies in 74% but induced IgG anti-GM2 antibodies in only 10% of the patients. To optimize the immune response against GM2, a reformulated vaccine was produced conjugating GM2 to keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) and using the adjuvant QS21 (GM2-KLH/QS21). In pilot studies, 70 microg of vaccine induced IgG anti-GM2 antibodies in 76% of the patients. We wished to define the lowest vaccine dose that induced consistent, high-titer IgM and IgG antibodies against GM2. Fifty-two melanoma patients who were free of disease after resection but at high risk for relapse were immunized with GM2-KLH/QS21 vaccine at GM2 doses of 1, 3, 10, 30, or 70 ILg on weeks 1, 2, 3, 4, 12, 24, and 36. Serum collected at frequent and defined intervals was tested for anti-GM2 antibodies. Overall, 88% of the patients developed IgM anti-GM2 antibodies; 71% also developed IgG anti-GM2 antibodies. GM2-KLH doses of 3-70 microg seemed to be equivalent in terms of peak titers and induction of anti-GM2 antibodies. At the 30-microg dose level, 50% of the patients developed complement fixing anti-GM2 antibodies detectable at a serum dilution of 1:10. We conclude that the GM2-KLH/QS21 formulation is more immunogenic than our previous formulation and that 3 microg is the lowest dose that induces consistent, high-titer IgM and IgG antibodies against GM2.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to assess use of a critical pathway designed to manage community-acquired pneumonia more efficiently than its management with conventional therapy. METHODS Economic outcomes were assessed in conjunction with a cluster-design, randomized, controlled trial. Nineteen participating Canadian hospitals were randomized to implement the critical pathway (n = 9) or conventional therapy (n = 10). The critical pathway included a clinical prediction rule to guide the admission decision, treatment with levofloxacin, and practice guidelines. Patient data on medical resource use, lost productivity, and quality of life were collected prospectively for > or =6 weeks after treatment. Costs were calculated from the government, health care system, and societal perspectives, with imputation of missing outpatient costs and the costs of lost productivity when necessary. Bootstrapping was used to identify 95% CIs for the total cost per patient. RESULTS The analysis included all eligible patients in the critical pathway (n = 716) and conventional therapy (n = 1027) arms. There were fewer hospital admissions in the critical pathway arm than in the conventional therapy arm, both overall (46.5% vs 62.2%; P = 0.01) and in low-risk patients (33.2% vs 46.8%; P < 0.001). Compared with conventional therapy, hospitals in the critical pathway arm had 1.6 fewer bed days per patient managed (P = 0.05) and used fewer inpatient medical resources. The 2 study arms had similar outpatient, readmission, and lost-productivity costs, and similar quality-of-life outcomes. The critical pathway produced cost savings from all 3 perspectives that ranged from $457 to $994 per patient. CONCLUSIONS The critical pathway employing levofloxacin resulted in cost savings compared with conventional therapy and did not compromise health outcomes.

Abstract
Occupational psychological test designed by the Labour Hygiene Department of West China University of Medical Sciences was applied to survey the mental health of 516 video display terminal (VDT) workers and 396 control workers in Chengdu. The results showed that mental health level of VDT workers was higher than that of controls. In the somatic disorder, anxious and hostile are increased obviously. With the prolonging of operating hours per week, somatic disorders, depression and obsession are increased, especially when VDT operating time is more than 30 hours per week and operating on VDT is more than ten years. This indicates that the operating hours should not be more than 30 hours per week. It is found by multiple factors analysis of data that the main adverse effects on mental health are age and VDT operating time.

Abstract
Based on the assessment of work ability index (WAI) of middle aged workers, associations between occupational factors and work ability decline of middle aged workers were examined in a case-control study. 1037 workers (age ranged from 40 to 60) were included in the study. The study group comprised 180 workers of mean age 47.71 years representing those who's work ability decreased. The control group comprised 857 workers of mean age 47.22 years representing those who's work ability was on a normal level. Results showed that some common occupation hazards such as dusts, noise, vibration, humidity, and high temperature were more frequently occurred in work environment of the study group than that of the control group. High risks were found in workers with these hazards. Another significant risk factor of work ability decline was heavy physical load. Significantly elevated risks were observed for physical load perception(OR = 2.52), repetitive work (OR = 1.36), poor work postures(OR = 1.48), and carrying heavy loads(OR = 1.59). As compared to physical loads, mental loads were not in relation to work ability decline. The information about occupational factors affecting work ability will be helpful for redesiging the work for the middle aged workers.

Abstract
The effect of herbal preparation Qingjunyin (QJY) on the animal model of drug dependence was studied. After the morphinistic models of white rats and mice were made by ever increasing doses of morphine each time, the animals were divided into large dosage QJY group, small dosage QJY group, sustained morphine group and control group. The withdrawal symptoms were observed after naloxone was given to the animals intraperitoneally. The results showed that QJY groups withdrawal symptoms of the addicted white rats were alleviated, the number of jumps of the addicted mice was reduced, the scores of the principal symptoms of the animals were decreased, while the body weights of the animals were gained, comparing with the control group, the difference was significant (P < 0.01). The effects of QJY enhanced in the large dosage group, which suggests QJY has abstinence effects.

Abstract
To study effects of different Anti-G suits (AGS) and different inflation pressure on human cardiac system, changes in lower limb arterial blood flow (BF), heart rate and blood pressure in 5 male subjects with three bladder coverage AGS and a capstain AGS were observed and recorded until inflation pressure reached to its maximum. The percent of bladder coverage was about 30%, 65% and 90% of lower body for three bladder AGS. All AGS were inflated to maximum pressure in +1Gz seating position. The results showed that calf BF, could be blocked by bladder AGS, and the relationship between the mean pressure for BF block and the percentage of bladder coverage was y = 29.66 - 16.35x. (P < 0.0001, r = -0.9229). While the thigh and calf BF was not blocked in subjects with the capsule AGS. The results indicate that the effect of "the higher bladder coverage AGS + lower IP" is probably equal to that of "the lower bladder coverage AGS + higher IP" in holding calf BF.

Abstract
To evaluate the efficacy of treatment of heroin addicts (n = 100) by "Qingjunyin" (QJY) detoxification (10 days program). Methadone detoxification (10 days program) group (n = 50) and colonidine treated group (n = 50) serve as controls. QJY group is given 180 ml P. O daily. The dosage of the two comparatine groups is given according to Documentation, the method of abserving the treatment protocols and detoxification standard is according to current regulation. The scores of abstinence syndrome in QJY detoxification group are lower than those in colonidine treated group in the first three days of potocol, but this difference disappear in the late stage of treatment. While QJY detoxification is effective as methadone detoxification in the control of abstinece syndrome during the first five days of treatment but the difference in the scores of abstinence syndrome between QJY and methadone group is observed during the late five days of protocol. QJY does not result in potential dependence and has definite curative effect in the treatment of heroin addiction.
