Abstract
This study explores the potential efficacy of chlorogenic acid (CGA) in mitigating lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced cystitis in a mice model. C57BL/6J mice were divided into four groups: normal control (NC), LPS, LPS + low CGA, and LPS + high CGA. Evaluation methods included cystometrogram (CMG), histopathological, western blot, and immunohistological analysis. In the LPS group, CMG revealed abnormal voiding behavior with increased micturition pressure, voided volume (VV), and decreased voided frequency. Low CGA treatment in LPS mice demonstrated improved micturition pressure and inter-contraction intervals (ICI). However, high CGA treatment exhibited prolonged ICI and increased VV, suggesting potential adverse effects. Histological analysis of LPS-treated mice displayed bladder inflammation and interstitial edema. Low CGA treatment reduced interstitial edema and bladder inflammation, confirmed by Masson's trichrome staining. Western blotting revealed increased cytokeratin 20 (K20) expression in the low CGA group, indicating structural abnormalities in the bladder umbrella layer after LPS administration. In conclusion, low CGA treatment positively impacted voiding behavior and decreased bladder edema and inflammation in the LPS-induced cystitis mice model, suggesting its potential as a supplement for inflammation cystitis prevention. However, high CGA treatment exhibited adverse effects, emphasizing the importance of dosage considerations in therapeutic applications.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the occupational noise hazards in five machinery manufacturing enterprises, and to evaluate the individual noise reduction values and influencing factors of workers wearing hearing protection device (HPD) by individual fit testing. Methods: From November 2021 to January 2022, 5 machinery manufacturing enterprises in Bao'an District of Shenzhen were selected to conduct an occupational health survey to understand the noise exposure level of workers. The 3MTM E-A-RfitTM fitness test system was used to test the baseline individual sound attenuation value level (PAR) of the daily wear of the ear protecters for 485 workers in typical noise working positions. Workers whose PAR values could not meet the requirements of noise reduction at work were instructed to wear and repeated tests were conducted. PAR results of the workers before and after the intervention were collected and analyzed. Results: The noise workers who received the suitability test were mainly distributed in 24 types of work, the job noise exposure level was 80.2 dB (A) ~ 95.0 dB (A), and the job noise excess rate was 52.5% (138/263). The median baseline PAR [M (Q(1), Q(3)) ] for 485 workers was 6.0 (0.0, 14.0) dB. The baseline PAR of male workers, those with more than 15 years of working experience, those with more than 15 years of using ear guards, those who considered ear guards comfortable to wear, those with college degree or above, and those exposed to noise level 90 dB (A) were higher, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). A total of 275 workers (56.7%) did not pass the baseline PAR test, and there was no statistically significant difference in the intervention rate of workers in different noise groups (P>0.05). PAR in subjects who did not pass baseline after intervention increased from 0.0 (0.0, 3.0) dB to 15.0 (12.0, 18.2) dB. Conclusion: The workplace noise hazard of machinery manufacturing enterprises is serious, and there is a great difference between the baseline PAR and the nominal value of the hearing guard worn by the noise exposed workers. The intervention measures can effectively improve the protective effect of wearing ear protectors.

Abstract
PURPOSE Currently, there are no accurate markers for predicting potentially lethal prostate cancer (PC) before biopsy. This study aimed to develop urine tests to predict clinically significant PC (sPC) in men at risk. METHODS Urine samples from 928 men, namely, 660 PC patients and 268 benign subjects, were analyzed by gas chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrophotometry (GC/Q-TOF MS) metabolomic profiling to construct four predictive models. Model I discriminated between PC and benign cases. Models II, III, and GS, respectively, predicted sPC in those classified as having favorable intermediate risk or higher, unfavorable intermediate risk or higher (according to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network risk groupings), and a Gleason sum (GS) of ≥ 7. Multivariable logistic regression was used to evaluate the area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUC). RESULTS In Models I, II, III, and GS, the best AUCs (0.94, 0.85, 0.82, and 0.80, respectively; training cohort, N = 603) involved 26, 24, 26, and 22 metabolites, respectively. The addition of five clinical risk factors (serum prostate-specific antigen, patient age, previous negative biopsy, digital rectal examination, and family history) significantly improved the AUCs of the models (0.95, 0.92, 0.92, and 0.87, respectively). At 90% sensitivity, 48%, 47%, 50%, and 36% of unnecessary biopsies could be avoided. These models were successfully validated against an independent validation cohort (N = 325). Decision curve analysis showed a significant clinical net benefit with each combined model at low threshold probabilities. Models II and III were more robust and clinically relevant than Model GS. CONCLUSION This urine test, which combines urine metabolic markers and clinical factors, may be used to predict sPC and thereby inform the necessity of biopsy in men with an elevated PC risk.

Abstract
Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), such as urgency, urinary incontinence, and/or difficulty voiding, hamper the quality of life (QoL) of patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). If not managed adequately, urological complications, such as urinary tract infection or renal function deterioration, may further deteriorate the patient's QoL. Botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A) injection within the detrusor muscle or urethral sphincter yields satisfactory therapeutic effects for treating urinary incontinence or facilitating efficient voiding; however, adverse effects inevitably follow its therapeutic efficacy. It is important to weigh the merits and demerits of BoNT-A injection for LUTS and provide an optimal management strategy for SCI patients. This paper summarizes different aspects of the application of BoNT-A injection for lower urinary tract dysfunctions in SCI patients and provides an overview of the benefits and drawbacks of this treatment.

Abstract
AIM To examine the mediating effect of sleep quality on the relationship between lower urinary tract symptoms and health-related quality of life in women with type-II diabetes. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. METHODS A study questionnaire comprising three valid instruments was used to obtain data about lower urinary tract symptoms, sleep quality and physical and mental component summary health-related quality of life between July 2017 and December 2018 (n = 343). Pearson's correlation coefficients were estimated initially to examine the relationships between the three variables. Multiple regression models were tested using a regression-based approach Hayes PROCESS macro for SPSS to examine the significance of proposed mediation effects. RESULTS Most participants experienced at least one urinary symptom (n = 268, 78.1%). The total number of types of lower urinary tract symptoms experienced by participants was significantly inversely correlated with physical and mental component summary health-related quality of life, and sleep quality. Participants' sleep quality was significantly correlated with physical and mental component summary health-related quality of life. The relationships of lower urinary tract symptoms with physical and mental component summary health-related quality of life were, respectively, fully and partially mediated by sleep quality. CONCLUSION Sleep quality played a mediating role on the relationship between lower urinary tract symptoms and health-related quality of life. Our findings could lead to improvements of diabetes care in nursing and healthcare practices. IMPACT Understanding the role of sleep quality in the adverse effects of lower urinary tract symptoms on health-related quality of life contributes to the development and delivery of appropriate strategies to promote optimal health-related quality of life. We recommended including assessments of lower urinary tract symptoms, sleep and health-related quality of life in routine diabetes management. Nurses and healthcare professionals should concurrently reduce lower urinary tract symptoms and improve sleep to achieve this population's optimal health-related quality of life. PATIENTS OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION We recruited a sample of older women with type-II diabetes at the endocrinology and metabolism outpatient departments of two hospitals. Study participants provided responses on the study questionnaires. The two hospitals provided needed supports (e.g., height/weight scales, suitable places for interview) during the data collection process.

Abstract
This study aimed to present a comprehensive literature review of the efforts of a spinal cord injury workgroup in Taiwan regarding urologic surgery for neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) in patients with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). Surgical procedures should be viewed as a final option for managing patients with SCI who have persistent symptoms and complications that cannot be resolved by other means. Surgeries can be grouped according to their purpose: reducing bladder pressures, reducing urethra resistance, increasing urethra resistance, and urinary diversion. The choice of surgery depends on the type of LUTD based on urodynamic tests. Additionally, cognitive function, hand motility, comorbidities, efficacy of surgery, and related complications should be considered.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Solute carrier family nine isoform 3 (SLC9A3) is an Na+/H+ exchanger that regulates Ca2+ homeostasis. SLC9A3 is largely involved in the transepithelial absorption of Na+/H+ and frequently functions in pair with a Cl-/HCO3- exchanger. OBJECTIVE To investigate the impact and pathophysiological mechanisms of long-term SLC9A3 deficiency on lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in a mouse model MATERIALS AND METHODS: Slc9a3 knockout and wild-type mice (average >6 months) were used. The effects of SLC9A3 depletion on bladder and urethral functions and effectiveness of voiding were assessed using a cystometrogram (CMG). Histology, blood electrolytes, and gene expression were also analyzed. RESULTS The SLC9A3-deficient mice had smaller gross bladders than the wild-type mice. The CMG analysis revealed normal peak micturition pressure, higher threshold pressure, short intercontraction interval, less voided volume, and poor compliance in the SLC9A3-deficient mice, similar to clinical LUTS. Histological analysis revealed loose detrusor muscle and loss of transformability of the urothelium in the SLC9A3-deficient mice. Masson's trichrome analysis revealed severe collagen deposition in the detrusor muscle. Immunofluorescence staining also demonstrated a significant decrease in cytokeratins 5 and 20. Gene and protein expression analyses confirmed that SLC9A3 does not act directly on bladder tissue. Homeostasis was correlated with bladder dysfunction in the SLC9A3-deficient mice. DISCUSSION Fibrosis and collagen deposition in the bladder of the SLC9A3-deficient mice is due to bladder inflammation because of decreased blood flow and deregulated systemic homeostasis. Long-term SLC9A3 depletion causes progressive bladder dysfunction, similar to human LUTS. CONCLUSION Electrolyte imbalance causes SLC9A3 deficiency-mediated progressive micturition dysfunction.

Abstract
According to the Taiwan Cancer Report, in 2018, prostate cancer was one of the top five cancers reported in men. Each year, many patients with prostate cancer undergo radical prostatectomy (RP) therapy. One of the most common RP complications is erectile dysfunction (ED). Although consensus guidelines for the management of sexual dysfunction after prostate cancer surgery have been developed for many Western and Asian countries, no such clinical practice guidelines have been developed for Taiwan. The consensus opinions expressed in this article were discussed by numerous experienced physicians in Taiwan, based on both existing international guidelines and their individual experiences with clinical trials and providing advice to clinical physicians on how to inform patients of the risk of ED prior to surgery. This review also discusses how recovery and rehabilitation may be affected by socioeconomic status, the existence of an intimate relationship, comorbidities, or the need for cancer adjuvant therapy and how to determine rehabilitation goals and provide appropriate treatments to assist in the recovery of both short- and long-term sexual function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Urinary incontinence (UI) and poor sleep negatively affect health-related quality of life (HRQoL). This study explored the UI-related factors and the relationships between UI, sleep quality, and HRQoL. METHODS This cross-sectional study collected data from 237 women with type 2 diabetes. Multivariate logistic regression was conducted to identify the factors associated with UI. One-way analysis of variance was used to compare the mean sleep quality and HRQoL scores of women without UI and those who experienced UI of varying severities. Correlation coefficients were estimated, and multivariate linear regression was conducted to examine the relationships between UI severity, sleep quality, and HRQoL. RESULTS Of the 237 women, 115 (48.52%) experienced UI and 139 (58.65%) were poor sleepers. The three factors associated with UI were advanced age, a higher body mass index, and a history of vaginal delivery. Significant associations between UI severity and sleep quality and between sleep quality and HRQoL were revealed. UI severity and night-time voiding frequency were both associated with sleep quality. CONCLUSIONS One factor associated with UI (body mass index) is modifiable. UI severity is associated with sleep quality as the possible influence of night-time voiding frequency on sleep quality has been considered.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) was the third gasotransmitter to be recognized as a cytoprotectant. A recent study demonstrated that exogenous supplementation of H2S ameliorates functional insufficiency in chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, how the H2S system is impaired by CKD has not been elucidated. The uremic toxin indoxyl sulfate (IS) is known to accumulate in CKD patients and harm the renal tubular cells. This study therefore treated the proximal tubular cells, LLC-PK1, with IS to see how IS affects H2S formation. Our results showed that H2S release from LLC-PK1 cells was markedly attenuated by IS when compared with control cells. The H2S donors NaHS and GYY-4137 significantly attenuated IS-induced tubular damage, indicating that IS impairs H2S formation. Interestingly, IS downregulated the H2S-producing enzymes cystathionine β-synthase (CBS), cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE), and 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (3-MST), and these effects could be reversed by inhibition of the IS receptor, aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). As transcription factor specificity protein 1 (Sp1) regulates the gene expression of H2S-producing enzymes, we further showed that IS significantly decreased the DNA binding activity of Sp1 but not its protein expression. Blockade of AhR reversed low Sp1 activity caused by IS. Moreover, exogenous H2S supplementation attenuated IS-mediated superoxide formation and depletion of the cellular glutathione content. These results clearly indicate that IS activates AhR, which then attenuates Sp1 function through the regulation of H2S-producing enzyme expression. The attenuation of H2S formation contributes to the low antioxidant defense of glutathione in uremic toxin-mediated oxidative stress, causing tubular cell damage.

Abstract
We conducted a phase IV, pre/post multi-center study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of intradetrusor onabotulinumtoxinA injection in patients with neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO, n = 119) or overactive bladder (OAB, n = 215). Patients received either 200U (i.e., NDO) and 100U (i.e., OAB) of onabotulinumtoxinA injection into the bladder, respectively. The primary endpoint for all patients was the change in the PPBC questionnaire score at week 4 and week 12 post-treatment compared with baseline. The secondary endpoints were the changes in subjective measures (i.e., questionnaires: NBSS for patients with NDO and OABSS for those with OAB) at week 4 and week 12 post-treatment compared with baseline. Adverse events included symptomatic UTI, de novo AUR, gross hematuria and PVR > 350mL were recorded. The results showed that compared with baseline, PPBC (3.4 versus 2.4 and 2.1, p < 0.001) and NBSS (35.4 versus 20.4 and 18.1, p < 0.001) were significantly improved at 4 weeks and 12 weeks in NDO patients. In addition, compared with baseline, PPBC (3.5 versus 2.3 and 2.0, p < 0.001) and OABSS (9.1 versus 6.2 and 5.7, p < 0.001) were significantly improved at 4 weeks and 12 weeks in OAB patients. Eight (6.7%) had symptomatic UTI and 5 (4.2%) had de novo AUR in NDO patients. Twenty (9.3%) had symptomatic UTI but no de novo AUR in OAB patients. In conclusion, we found that intradetrusor onabotulinumtoxinA injections were safe and improved subjective measures related to NDO or OAB in our cohort.

Abstract
Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by bladder pain and increased urinary frequency. Although the C57BL/6J (B6) and FVB/NJ (FVB) mouse strains are commonly used as animal models for studies involving the urinary system, few reports have compared their lower urinary tract anatomy, despite the importance of such data. Our study aimed to characterize bladder function changes in FVB and B6 mouse strains with lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced IC, to understand mouse model-based bladder research. The bladder function parameters were measured by cystometrogram. Histological assay was examined by hematoxylin and eosin stain, Masson’s trichrome stain, and immunofluorescence staining. Results indicated that the two strains in the control group exhibited different bladder structures and functions, with significant anatomical differences, including a larger bladder size in the FVB than in the B6 strain. Furthermore, cystometry tests revealed differences in bladder function pressure. LPS-treated B6 mice presented significant changes in peak pressure, with decreased intercontraction intervals; these results were similar to symptoms of IC in humans. Each strain displayed distinct characteristics, emphasizing the care required in choosing the appropriate strain for bladder-model studies. The results suggested that the B6 mouse strain is more suitable for IC models.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine the mechanism of ketamine-induced cystitis without metabolism. A total of 24 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were separated into control, ketamine, and norketamine groups. To induce cystitis, rats in the ketamine and norketamine groups were treated with intravesical instillation of ketamine and norketamine by mini-osmotic pump, which was placed in subcutaneous space, daily for 24 h for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks, all rats were subjected to bladder functional tests. The bladders were collected for histological and pathological evaluation. Compared to control, ketamine treatment demonstrated an increase in the bladder weight, high bladder/body coefficient, contractive pressure, voiding volume, collagen deposition, reduced smooth muscle content, damaged glycosaminoglycan layer, and low bladder compliance. Compared to ketamine, norketamine treatment showed more severe collagen deposition, smooth muscle loss, damaged glycosaminoglycan layer, and increased residual urine. Intravesical administration of ketamine and norketamine induced cystitis with different urodynamic characteristics. Norketamine treatment caused more severe bladder dysfunction than ketamine treatment. Direct treatment of the bladder with norketamine induced symptoms more consistent with those of bladder outlet obstruction than ketamine cystitis. Detailed studies of cellular mechanisms are required to determine the pathogenesis of ketamine cystitis.

Abstract
Glutamate N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) hyperfunction is known to contribute to acute renal failure due to ischemia-reperfusion and endotoxemia. d-Serine is a coagonist for NMDAR activation, but whether NMDARs play a role in d-serine-mediated nephrotoxicity remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate that NMDAR blockade ameliorated d-serine-induced renal injury. In NMDAR-expressing LLC-PK1 cells, which were used as a proximal tubule model, d-serine but not l-serine induced cytotoxicity in a dose-dependent manner, which was abrogated by the selective NMDAR blockers MK-801 and AP-5. Time-dependent oxidative stress, evidenced by gradually increased superoxide and H2O2 production, was associated with d-serine-mediated cytotoxicity; these reactive oxygen species could be alleviated not only after NMDAR inhibition but also by NADPH oxidase (NOX) inhibition. Activation of protein kinase C (PKC)-δ and PKC-ζ is a downstream signal for NMDAR-mediated NOX activation because PKC inhibition diminishes the NOX activity that is induced by d-serine. Renal injury was further confirmed in male Wistar rats that intraperitoneally received d-serine but not l-serine. Peak changes in glucosuria, proteinuria, and urinary excretion of lactate dehydrogenase and malondialdehyde were found after 24 h of treatment. Persistent tubular damage was observed after 7 days of treatment. Cotreatment with the NMDAR blocker MK-801 for 24 h abolished d-serine-induced functional insufficiency and tubular damage. MK-801 attenuated renal superoxide formation by lowering NOX activity and protein upregulation of NOX4 but not NOX2. These results reveal that NMDAR hyperfunction underlies d-serine-induced renal injury via the effects of NOX4 on triggering oxidative stress.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Ionotropic N-methyl-d-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) are not only present in the nervous system but also expressed in the kidney. Overstimulation of renal NMDARs leads to oxidative stress via the signal pathway of calcium/protein kinase C/NADPH oxidase in d-serine-mediated tubular cell damage. Intervention of NMDAR blockade may prevent acute renal injury caused by d-serine.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The intracavernosal (IC) injection of chitosan activated platelet rich plasma (cPRP) has shown to improve the erectile dysfunction in cavernous nerve injury rat model. However, the action target of PRP in improving neurogenic erectile dysfunction remains unclear. We aimed to determine the effect of cPRP action at early stage that further mediates its effect on erectile function (EF) recovery in the bilateral cavernous nerve crushing (BCNC) injury rat model. METHODS Fifty-four rats were randomly divided into two equal groups: intracavernosal ( IC) injection of saline after BCNC (group 1) and IC injection of cPRP after BCNC (group 2). Five animals in each group were euthanized at 3, 7 and 14 day (d) post-injection, and the tissues were harvested to conduct transmission electron microscopy and histological assays. Six animals in each group were used to determine the recovery of EF at 14 and 28 d post-injury. RESULTS IC injections of cPRP increased all EF parameters at 28 d and 14 d post-injury (p < 0.05). cPRP injections simultaneously prevented the loss of neuronal nitric oxide synthase-positive neurons (p < 0.05) and nerve fibers (p < 0.05) in the major pelvic ganglion and cavernous nerve (CN), respectively, compared with saline injections. This simultaneous accelerated the regeneration of myelinated axons of the CN, reduced apoptosis, and enhanced the proliferation of the corporal smooth muscle cells at an earlier stage. CONCLUSION These results suggest that the application of cPRP was beneficial to restore EF via neuroprotective and tissue-protective effects at early stage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The neuro-protective and tissue-protective properties of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) have been demonstrated through treating bilateral cavernous nerve (CN) injury in rats, although the underlying mechanisms have not been fully clarified. AIM To determine factors released from PRP and explore their role in mediating preservation of erectile function (EF) in a rat model of CN injury. METHODS Male Sprague-Dawley rats (aged 10 weeks) were used in this study. 6 rats were used to obtain blood for PRP and whole plasma preparation. We probed samples using a cytokine antibody array and performed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). We determined the expression patterns of C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 5 (CXCL5) and receptors in the major pelvic ganglion (MPG) and corpus cavernosum via immunostaining. 32 rats were divided into 4 groups based on the type of injection received: (i) sham, (ii) vehicle, (iii) 400 μL of PRP, and (iv) 30 ng/kg of CXCL5. Groups 2-4 were subjected to bilateral CN crush (BCNC) injury. 4 weeks later, EF was assessed by CN electrostimulation, and CNs and penile tissue were collected for histological analysis. OUTCOME Cytokine antibody array, ELISA, erectile response, and immunofluorescence staining readings. RESULTS The PRP contained high levels of CXCL5. MPG neurons expressed CXCL5 and CXCR2. PRP intracavernous injection stabilized CXCR2 and increased CXCL5 expression in the MPG after BCNC, thus enhancing neuroprotection. CXCL5 injection improved BCNC-induced erectile dysfunction by preventing smooth muscle atrophy. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS The therapeutic efficacy of PRP in CN injury-induced erectile dysfunction may arise from the synergy among multiple biomolecules. Our study serves as a basis for future studies on PRP formulation to provide safe and effective medications for the maintenance of EF after radical prostatectomy in patients with prostate cancer. STRENGTHS & LIMITATIONS A strength of our study is that our model was able to isolate the role of cytokines, specifically CXCL5, as part of the mechanism responsible for PRP's protective properties. However, the rat cytokine array provided limited experimental targets. The rats used were not at the age corresponding to prostate cancer patients in clinical settings. Our study did not explore CXCL5 blocking in the PRP group. Finally, the main protein quantification results by western blotting were hampered because of small tissue samples. CONCLUSIONS This study provides evidence for the role of CXCL5 and CXCR2 as mediators of PRP effects in the preservation of EF after CN injury. Wu YN, Liao CH, Chen KC, et al. Abstract
Indoxyl sulfate (IS), a uremic toxin, causes chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression via its tubulotoxicity. After cellular uptake, IS directly induces apoptotic and necrotic cell death of tubular cells. Additionally, IS increases oxidative stress and decreases antioxidant capacity, which are associated with tubulointerstitial injury. Injured tubular cells are a major source of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), which induces myofibroblast transition from residual renal cells in damaged kidney, recruits inflammatory cells and thereby promotes extracellular matrix deposition in renal fibrosis. Moreover, IS upregulates signal transducers and activators of transcription 3 phosphorylation, followed by increases in TGF-β1, monocyte chemotactic protein-1 and α-smooth muscle actin production, which participate in interstitial inflammation, renal fibrosis and, consequently, CKD progression. Clinically, higher serum IS levels are independently associated with renal function decline and predict all-cause mortality in CKD. The poor removal of serum IS in conventional hemodialysis is also significantly associated with all-cause mortality and heart failure incidence in end-stage renal disease patients. Scavenging the IS precursor by AST-120 can markedly reduce tubular IS staining that attenuates renal tubular injury, ameliorates IS-induced oxidative stress and rescues antioxidant glutathione activity in tubular epithelial cells, thereby providing a protective role against tubular injury and ultimately retarding renal function decline.

Abstract
Indoxyl sulfate (IS) is accumulated during severe renal insufficiency and known for its nephrotoxic properties. Transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) is present in the kidney and acts as a renal sensor. However, the mechanism underlying IS-mediated renal tubular damage in view of TRPV1 is lacking. Here, we demonstrated that TRPV1 was expressed in tubular cells of Lilly Laboratories cell-porcine kidney 1 (LLC-PK1) and Madin-Darby canine kidney cells (MDCK). IS treatment in both cells exhibited tubular damage with increased LDH release and reduced cell viability in dose- and time-dependent manners. MDCK, however, was more vulnerable to IS. We, therefore, investigated MDCK cells to explore a more detailed mechanism. Interestingly, IS-induced tubular damage was markedly attenuated in the presence of selective TRPV1 blockers. IS showed no effect on TRPV1 expression but significantly increased arachidonate 12-lipoxygenase (ALOX12) protein, mRNA expression, and 12(S)-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (12(S)-HETE) amounts in a dose-dependent manner, indicating that the ALOX12/12(S)-HETE pathway induced TRPV1 hyperfunction in IS-mediated tubulotoxicity. Blockade of ALOX12 by cinnamyl-3,4-dihydroxy-α-cyanocinnamate or baicalein attenuated the effects of IS. Since aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) activation after IS binding is crucial in mediating cell death, here, we found that the AhR blockade not only ameliorated tubular damage but also attenuated ALOX12 expression and 12(S)-HETE production caused by IS. The uremic toxic adsorbent AST-120, however, showed little effect on ALOX12 and 12(S)-HETE, as well as IS-induced cell damage. These results clearly indicated that IS activated AhR and then upregulated ALOX12, and this induced endovanilloid 12(S)-HETE synthesis and contributed to TRPV1 hyperfunction in IS-treated tubular cells. Further study on TRPV1 may attenuate kidney susceptibility to the functional loss of end-stage kidney disease via IS.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the safety and feasibility of longitudinal transpancreatic U-sutures invaginated pancreatojejunostomy (Chen's pancreaticojejunostomy technique) in laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD). Methods: Clinical data of 116 consecutive patients who underwent LPD using Chen's pancreaticojejunostomy technique in Hunan Provincial People's Hospital from May 2017 to December 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Among these patients, 66 were males and 50 were females. The median age was 58 years old (32-84 yeas old). All 116 patients underwent pure laparoscopic whipple procedure with Child reconstruction method, using Chen's pancreaticojejunostomy technique. The intraoperative and postoperative data of patients were analyzed. Results: All 116 patients underwent LPD successfully. The mean operative time was (260.3±33.5) minutes (200-620 minutes). The mean time of pancreaticojejunostomy was (18.2±7.6) minutes (14-35 minutes). The mean time of hepaticojejunostomy was (14.6±6.3) minutes (10-25 minutes). The mean time of gastrojejunostomy was (12.0±5.5) minutes (8-20 minutes). The mean estimated blood loss was (106.0±87.6) ml (20-800 ml). Postoperative complications were: 11.2%(13/116) of cases had postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF), including 10.3% (12/116) of biochemical fistula and 0.9%(1/116) of grade B POPF, no grade C POPF occurred; 10.3%(12/116) had gastrojejunal anastomotic bleeding; 3.4%(4/116) had hepaticojejunal anastomotic fistula; 3.4%(4/116) had delayed gastric emptying; 4.3% (5/116) had localized abdominal infection; 12.1%(14/116) had pulmonary infection; postoperative mortality were 0(0/116) and 1.7%(2/116) within 30 days and 90 days, respectively. One patient died of massive abdominal bleeding secondary to Gastroduodenal artery pseudoaneurysm rupture, the other patient died of extensive tumor recurrence and metastasis after surgery. Conclusions: Chen's pancreaticojejunostomy technique is safe and feasible for LPD.It is an option especially for surgeons who have not completed the learning curve of LPD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to investigate the self-perception of symptoms, medical help seeking, and self-help strategies of women with interstitial cystitis (IC). METHODS A mixed method of qualitative and quantitative approaches was employed. The qualitative approach used in-depth interviews about the subjective experience of symptoms, medical help seeking, and self-help strategies for their IC. The quantitative inquiry was conducted by a yes or no response to the question "Did self-perceived severe symptoms of IC interfere with your daily life?" A loglinear model was applied to investigate the associations between possible factors. RESULTS This study recruited 68 women aged 20 to 69 years, of whom 22 were interviewed for qualitative data. About 72.1% of the women responded that self-perceived severe IC symptoms interfered with their daily life. A significant negative association between employment and self-perceived severe IC symptoms (P < .05) was observed. Qualitative results revealed three important themes: (1) bothersome symptoms-all-day bladder pain and lower urinary tract symptoms and deteriorated quality of life, (2) medical help seeking-exhaustion and frustration, (3) self-help strategies-coexisting with IC or feeling helpless. CONCLUSIONS IC women feel exhausted and frustrated by seeking medical attention for this incurable disease for a long time. IC women have troubled and uneasy daily lives. Being employed or engaging in activities can divert attention to alleviate symptoms. IC patient support groups allow patients to share their self-help experiences with interdisciplinary medical teams to provide physical and psychological treatment.

Abstract
Objective: To assess the safety and feasibility of the application of the laparoscopic modality in the perioperative treatment of central liver tumors. Methods: Collecting all the clinical information of a total of 40 patients with central liver tumors who received laparoscopic resection treatment carried out at Department of Hepatological Surgery of People's Hospital of Hunan Provincial from January 2016 to December 2018 to take a retrospective review. There were 19 males and 21 females.The age was (59.5±14.5) years (range: 15 to 71 years) . There were 26 cases of primary hepatic carcinoma (24 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma, 2 cases of cholangiocellular carcinoma) , 8 cases of hepatic cavernous hemangioma, 1 case of metastatic hepatic carcinoma, 5 cases of hepatocellular adenoma. The maximum diameter of tumors were (6.2±2.9) cm (range: 2 to 13 cm) . The patient's information about hepatectomy methods, blocking mode and time of blood flow, operation time, intraoperative blood loss, intraoperative blood transfusion rate, post-operative hospitalization time, perioperative reoperation and postoperative complications were collected. Results: A total of 40 patients all were treated with laparoscopic surgery. The surgical procedure was as follows: 2 patients received the right hepatic lobectomy (Ⅴ, Ⅵ, Ⅶ and Ⅷ segments) , 2 patients received the left hepatic lobectomy (Ⅱ, III and Ⅳ segments) , 13 patients received mesohepatectomy (Ⅳ, Ⅰ and Ⅷ segments) , 2 patients received left hepatic trisegmentectomy (Ⅱ, Ⅲ, Ⅳ and Ⅷ segments) , 2 patients received right hepatic trisegmentectomy (Ⅳ, Ⅴ, Ⅵ, Ⅶ and Ⅷ segments) , 7 patients received Ⅷ segmentectomy, 1 patient received Ⅳ segmentectomy, 3 patients received Ⅴ and Ⅷ segmentectomy, 5 patients received hepatic caudate lobe resection (Ⅰ, Ⅸ segments) , and 3 patients received local tumors resection.Pathological results: there were 26 cases of primary hepatic carcinoma (24 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma, 2 cases of cholangiocellular carcinoma) , 8 cases of hepatic cavernous hemangioma, 1 case of metastatic hepatic carcinoma, 5 cases of hepatocellular adenoma; the pathological reports of all malignant tumor cases all showed negative incisal edge. The operative time was (333±30) minutes (range: 280 to 380 minutes) ; the intraoperative hepatic portal occlusion period was (58±13) minutes (range: 30 to 90 minutes) ; the intraoperative hemorrhage was (173±129) ml (range: 20 to 600 ml) ; the intraoperative blood transfusion rate was 2.5% (1/40) ; the postoperative incidence of bile leakage was 2.5% (1/40) , the hospital discharge of 1 patient with bile leakage was approved after conservative treatments like T pipe decompression and adequate drainage; there was 1 case of abdominal infection and 1 case of pulmonary infection, both of which were discharged from the hospital with conservative treatments; there were no other serious postoperative complications. The postoperative hospital stay was (10.7±2.7) days (range: 6 to 16 days) ; there were no perioperative mortality and reoperation cases. Conclusion: In the centers with abundant laparoscopic hepatectomy experiences, the laparoscopic resection is proved to be safe and feasible in the perioperative treatments of central liver tumors by the highly selective cases, the adequate preoperative assessment and reasonable surgical techniques and approach.

Abstract
Vascular complications are serious problems after kidney transplantation. An aneurysm or rupture in a graft artery is a rare but potentially devastating complication, which may lead to renal function impairment, graft loss, or even death. In this paper, we present two rare vascular complications in the early postoperative course after renal transplantation from the same deceased donor. In the first case, a 49-year-old woman who had spontaneous graft arterial rupture 13 days after kidney transplantation presented with sudden distension in the right lower abdomen. In the second case, a 56-year-old woman recipient with a graft renal arterial pseudoaneurysm presented with decreased urine output and deteriorating renal function 32 days after transplantation. Immediate surgical repair was performed, and fibrin sealant was applied to strengthen the fragile renal arterial wall. Although the function of both graft kidneys recovered well after surgery, the first graft kidney was removed 2 months later because of repeated fungal and bacterial infections. Aggressive surgical reconstruction may preserve graft kidneys in patients with vascular complications after kidney transplantation, but recovery of the graft condition remains a demanding challenge in renal transplantation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the therapeutic efficacy and safety of mirabegron monotherapy in male patients with overactive bladder (OAB) with and without bladder outlet obstruction (BOO). MATERIALS AND METHODS Male patients with OAB aged ≥20 years, with or without BOO, receiving mirabegron 25 mg monotherapy once daily, were prospectively enrolled. The treatment results were assessed using global response assessment, international prostate symptom score and subscores, overactive bladder symptom score, patient perception on intensity of urgency scale, patient perception of bladder condition, and quality of life index at 1 and 3 months after treatment. RESULTS Of the 289 enrolled patients (mean age, 71.2 years), 207 did not have BOO (71.6%) and 82 had BOO (28.4%). The baseline OAB symptoms were similar between patients with and without BOO. After mirabegron treatment, the satisfactory rate (global response assessment score ≧1) were similar between those without BOO (61.3%) and with BOO (57.1%). The improvement of quality of life index and patient perception of bladder condition was also found in both groups. However, only patients without BOO had significantly improved international prostate symptom score and subscores, overactive bladder symptom score, and patient perception on intensity of urgency scale. Although most adverse events (AEs) were mild, patients with BOO had significantly higher AEs rate (18.6%) than those without BOO (8.2%, P = .026). CONCLUSION Mirabegron monotherapy in male patients with OAB and BOO was safe. However, the storage symptoms improvement was less in patients with BOO and AEs rate was higher.

Abstract
Purpose Impotence is one of the major complications occurring in prostate cancer patients after radical prostectomy (RP). Self-repair of the injured nerve has been observed in animal models and in patients after RP. However, the downstream signalling is not well documented. Here, we found that the DAPK/CIP2A complex is involved in GAS6/AXL-related Schwann cell proliferation. Materials and Methods The 3 groups were a sham group, a 14-day post-bilateral cavernous nerve injury (BCNI) group and a 28-day post-BCNI group. Erectile function was assessed and immunohistochemistry was performed. The rat Schwann cell RSC96 line was chosen for gene knockdown, cell viability, western blot, immunofluorescence and co-immunoprecipitation assays. Results The intracavernosal pressure was low on the 14th day after BCNI and partially increased by the 28th day. GAS6 and p-AXL expression gradually increased in the cavernous nerve after BCNI. RSC96 cells incubated with a GAS6 ligand showed increased levels of p-ERK1/2 and p-AKT. Moreover, DAPK and CIP2A.p-AXL and p-DAPK and CIP2A complexes were identified by both immunoblotting and co-immunoprecipitation. Conclusion The DAPK/CIP2A complex is involved in GAS6/AXL-related Schwann cell proliferation. CIP2A inhibits PP2A activity, which results in p-DAPK(S308) maintenance and promotes Schwann cell proliferation. CIP2A is a potential target for the treatment of nerve injury after RP.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT) is not always performed clinically if the diagnosis of ureteral calculi has been confirmed using other radiographic imaging modalities. The aim of this study was to identify predictors of successful extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL) without assistance of NCCT. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with symptomatic solitary ureteral stones who underwent ESWL between November 2015 and January 2016. Abdominal plain radiography or intravenous urography were performed before ESWL for localization. The exclusion criteria were repeated sessions of ESWL for the target stone and congenital genitourinary tract anomalies. The demographic characteristics, clinical history, medical charges, or imaging features of the stones were recorded. Successful treatment was defined as no fragments detected on radiography or ultrasonography in 4 weeks. For radiolucent calculi, successful treatment was regarded as cases without hydronephrosis, symptoms, or hematuria. Patients experiencing intractable pain and undergoing subsequent auxiliary surgeries were regarded as having ESWL treatment failure. RESULTS Age (odds ratio [OR], 1.042; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.007-1.078), history of ipsilateral renal or ureteral calculi episodes (OR, 2.669; 95% CI, 1.281-5.687), stone burden (OR, 3.499; 95% CI, 1.284-9.530), and radiopaque stone (OR, 2.351; 95% CI, 1.049-5.267) were significant predictors of ESWL failure in all patients. CONCLUSIONS For treating symptomatic ureteral stones, those with smaller size, radiolucency, and without a history of ipsilateral renal or ureteral calculi could be considered for first-line therapy with ESWL.

Abstract
Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are highly prevalent in men and increase with age. Because LUTS are common among elderly men, they are usually considered synonymous with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Drugs should be the first-line treatment for BPH and surgical intervention should be performed only when there are complications or LUTS refractory to medical treatment. In addition to medical treatment, several minimally invasive therapies, such as thermal therapy, prostatic lift, laser evaporation, or laser enucleation techniques have been developed. Recent investigations have also revealed that bladder dysfunction such as detrusor overactivity and detrusor underactivity may also contribute to male LUTS. In the treatment of LUTS suggestive of BPH (LUTS/BPH), the following questions should be considered: Is there an obstruction? Are we treating BPH or LUTS? Can management targeting BPH reduce LUTS? Should patients with LUTS be treated before bladder outlet obstruction is confirmed? What is the role of transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) nowadays? Will new techniques provide better outcomes than TURP? This article discusses the current consensus and controversies in the treatment of LUTS/BPH.

Abstract
Mirabegron, which was the first β3-adrenoceptor agonist introduced for use in clinical practice, has been extensively evaluated in overactive bladder (OAB) patients in several phase II and III studies. However, most of the enrolled patients were treatment naive or had experienced a wash-out period before the introduction of mirabegron. No study has reported the treatment results of a direct switch from antimuscarinics to mirabegron, which may more commonly occur in clinical practice. This is an observational study to assess the therapeutic efficacy and safety of directly switching from antimuscarinics to mirabegron in patients with OAB receiving stable antimuscarinic treatment. Moreover, we sought to identify the patients who benefited more from the change.Patients aged ≥20 years with OAB receiving stable antimuscarinics for >3 months were enrolled. Antimuscarinics were discontinued in all patients and mirabegron 25 mg, once daily was initiated. Primary end-point was global response assessment (GRA) at 1 month after medication switching. Baseline parameters and parameters changed 1 month after medication switching were compared between patients with GRA ≥ 1 and GRA < 1.Of the 282 enrolled patients (209 men, 73 women; mean age, 74.4 years), 55.3% had better (GRA ≥ 1), 31.2% had similar (GRA = 0), and 10.3% had worse (GRA < 0) outcomes. The overall adverse events (AE) rate decreased from 24.1% to 12.8%. In overall patients, there was no significant improvement of OAB symptoms, but postvoid residual (PVR) urine decreased and voiding symptoms and quality of life index improved significantly. Patients with GRA ≥ 1 had significantly improved both storage and voiding symptoms. A total of 195 patients (69.1%) can maintain mirabegron without adding or resuming antimuscarinics for more than 3 months. Logistic regression analysis indicated that higher baseline OAB symptoms scores were predictor of satisfactory outcome.More than 50% patients exhibited better outcomes after switching from antimuscarinics to mirabegron. Significantly lower AE rates and decreased PVR were noted. Higher baseline OAB symptom scores may predict a better outcome.

Abstract
There is an unmet need for treatment of erectile dysfunction resulting from radical prostatectomy and cavernous nerve (CN) injury. Given the neuroprotective properties of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), we investigated its effect on penile functional and structural recovery in a rat model of bilateral cavernous nerve injury. Rats were subject to CN injury and received intraperitoneal administration of either vehicle or a DHA nanoemulsion (nano-DHA) at 10, 50, or 250 μg/kg. Functional testing and histological analyses were performed at 28 days post-injury. The maximum intracavernosal pressure (ICP) and other measures of erectile function were significantly higher in the nano-DHA groups than in the vehicle group (p < 0.05). The ratio of area of expression of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS)/β-III tubulin, numbers of axon and smooth muscle cell content were significantly higher in the 50 μg/kg nano-DHA group than in the vehicle group (p < 0.05). A qualitative increase in the smooth muscle cells/collagen ratio and decrease in apoptosis was observed in the nano-DHA groups relative to the vehicle group: however, these differences were not statistically significant. Our data demonstrate that nano-DHA, particularly the 50 μg/kg regimen, improves erectile function after bilateral CN injury in rats by neuroprotection and other anti-fibrotic and anti-apoptotic mechanisms.

Abstract
We investigated and evaluated the mechanisms of erectile dysfunction (ED) in a rat model of long-term ketamine administration. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 32) were divided into four groups: namely the control group receiving intraperitoneal injection of saline, 1-month, 2-month and 3-month groups receiving daily intraperitoneal injection of ketamine (100 mg/kg/day) for 1, 2, and 3 month respectively. After treatment, animals underwent an erectile response protocol to assess intracavernosal pressure (ICP). Smooth muscle content was evaluated. Neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) expression were assessed using immunostaining assay. Ketamine-induced apoptosis was analyzed using TUNEL assay. Long-term ketamine administration caused significantly decreased erectile responses as measured by ICP. Smooth muscle content was significantly decreased in the ketamine-treated rats for 3 months. In the erectile tissue, ketamine administration significantly reduced nNOS expression and increased iNOS content compared with controls, whereas eNOS expression was not altered. Ketamine induced apoptosis in corpus cavernosum. The present study demonstrates that long-term ketamine administration led to erectile dysfunction in rat. The molecular mechanisms of ketamine-induced ED involved the increased apoptosis and up-regulated iNOS expression incorporating with loss of corporal smooth muscle content and reduced nNOS expression in cavernous nerve.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in men result from a complex interplay of pathophysiology, including bladder and bladder outlet dysfunction. This study retrospectively analyzed bladder dysfunction in men with LUTS based on the results of video-urodynamic studies (VUDS). METHODS Male patients (aged ≥40 years), with LUTS and an International Prostate Symptom Score of 8 or more, who were refractory to alpha-blocker treatment were retrospectively recruited and evaluated with VUDS and total prostate volume (TPV). Patients were further divided into subgroups of bladder dysfunction and bladder outlet dysfunction according to characteristic VUDS findings. Age, TPV and VUDS findings were compared among different subgroups. RESULTS After VUDS, bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) was only noted in 48.6% of men. Of patients, 919 of 2991 (30.7%) had bladder dysfunction including detrusor underactivity (DU, 5.1%), detrusor overactivity and inadequate contractility (DHIC, 5.3%), detrusor overactivity (DO, 17%) and hypersensitive bladder (HSB, 3.3%). In addition, 1941 (64.9%) had bladder outlet dysfunction including BOO + DO (33.8%), BOO alone (14.8%), and poor urethral sphincter relaxation (PRES, 16.3%). Among the 1519 patients with DO, 66.6% (1012) had BOO while, among 1454 patients with BOO, 69.5% (1010) had DO. Patients with DHIC, DU and DO were 5 years older than patients with HSB and normal men. TPV was significantly smaller in patients with DHIC, DU and DO as compared with BOO + DO. CONCLUSION Approximately one-third of male LUTS was due to bladder dysfunction. A man older than 70 years with LUTS and TPV less than 30 mL usually indicates the presence of bladder dysfunction rather than BOO.

Abstract
Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are bone marrow-derived endothelial cells capable of circulating, proliferating, and differentiating into mature endothelial cells. Circulating EPCs can be directly recruited to some extent at sites of injury, and their administration could accelerate repair or endothelialization of the damaged tissue. We investigated the effects of intracavernous injections of EPCs into the corpora cavernosa of rats with erectile dysfunction (ED) caused by bilateral cavernous nerve (CN) injury. Overall, 24 male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into three groups: sham surgery, vehicle-only, or EPC treatment. Rats in the EPC treatment and vehicle-only groups were subjected to bilateral CN injury before injection of EPCs or vehicle, respectively, into the corpora cavernosa. Four weeks after surgery, erectile function was assessed by measuring maximum intracavernosal pressure (ICP), change in ICP, area under the ICP curve, and ratio of change in ICP and mean arterial pressure (MAP; ΔICP/MAP). Penile tissue was histomorphometrically analyzed for the expression of neural nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), neurofilament-1 (NF-1), von Willebrand factor (vWF), endothelial NOS (eNOS), and smooth muscle cell content. Maximum ICP and all other functional parameters of erectile function were significantly reduced in the vehicle-only group vs. the sham and EPC treatment groups (all p < 0.001). Smooth muscle cell content was decreased in the vehicle-only vs. the sham and EPC treatment groups (both p < 0.01). Expressions of vWF and eNOS in the dorsal artery were significantly higher in the EPC treatment than the vehicle-only group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, EPC treatment restored erectile function in a rat model of bilateral CN injury through recruitment of EPCs toward the dorsal artery and preservation of smooth muscle cells in the corpus cavernosum. These findings elucidate the therapeutic potential of EPCs for treating ED in humans.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine this association by comparing the risk of prior irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) between patients with chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) and matched controls in Taiwan. Data were retrieved from the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2005. This study included 4870 cases with CP/CPPS and 4870 age-matched controls. Conditional logistic regressions were conducted to examine associations of CP/CPPS with previously diagnosed IBS. We found that a total of 753 (7.7%) of the 9740 sampled patients had IBS prior to the index date; IBS was found in 497 (10.2%) cases and in 256 (5.3%) controls. Conditional logistic regression revealed a higher odds ratio (OR) of prior IBS (OR 2.05, 95% CI = 1.75–2.40) for cases than controls. Furthermore, after adjusting for the patients’ monthly income, geographical location, urbanization level, and hypertension and coronary heart disease, the conditional logistic regression analysis indicated that cases were more likely than controls to have prior IBS (OR = 1.96, 95% CI = 1.67–2.29). Furthermore, we found that CP/CPPS was consistently and significantly associated with prior IBS regardless of age group. We concluded that the diagnosis of CP/CPPS was associated with previously diagnosed IBS. Urologists should be aware of the association between CP/CPPS and IBS when treating patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate contemporary international trends in the implementation of minimally invasive adrenalectomy and to assess contemporary outcomes of different minimally invasive techniques performed at urologic centers worldwide. METHODS A retrospective multinational multicenter study of patients who underwent minimally invasive adrenalectomy from 2008 to 2013 at 14 urology institutions worldwide was included in the analysis. Cases were categorized based on the minimally invasive adrenalectomy technique: conventional laparoscopy (CL), robot-assisted laparoscopy (RAL), laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS), and mini-laparoscopy (ML). The rates of the four treatment modalities were determined according to the year of surgery, and a regression analysis was performed for trends in all surgical modalities. RESULTS Overall, a total of 737 adrenalectomies were performed across participating institutions and included in this analysis: 337 CL (46 % of cases), 57 ML (8 %), 263 LESS (36 %), and 80 RA (11 %). Overall, 204 (28 %) operations were performed with a retroperitoneal approach. The overall number of adrenalectomies increased from 2008 to 2013 (p = 0.05). A transperitoneal approach was preferred in all but the ML group (p < 0.001). European centers mostly adopted CL and ML techniques, whereas those from Asia and South America reported the highest rate in LESS procedures, and RAL was adopted to larger extent in the USA. LESS had the fastest increase in utilization at 6 %/year. The rate of RAL procedures increased at slower rates (2.2 %/year), similar to ML (1.7 %/year). Limitations of this study are the retrospective design and the lack of a cost analysis. CONCLUSIONS Several minimally invasive surgical techniques for the management of adrenal masses are successfully implemented in urology institutions worldwide. CL and LESS seem to represent the most commonly adopted techniques, whereas ML and RAL are growing at a slower rate. All the MIS techniques can be safely and effectively performed for a variety of adrenal disease.
