Abstract
The interplay between hydrogen and dislocations (e.g., core and elastic energies, and dislocation-dislocation interactions) has implications on hydrogen embrittlement but is poorly understood. Continuum models of hydrogen enhanced local plasticity have not considered the effect of hydrogen on dislocation core energies. Energy minimization atomistic simulations can only resolve dislocation core energies in hydrogen-free systems because hydrogen motion is omitted so hydrogen atmosphere formation can't occur. Additionally, previous studies focused more on face-centered-cubic than body-centered-cubic metals. Discrete dislocation dynamics studies of hydrogen-dislocation interactions assume isotropic elasticity, but the validity of this assumption isn't understood. We perform time-averaged molecular dynamics simulations to study the effect of hydrogen on dislocation energies in body-centered-cubic iron for several dislocation character angles. We see atmosphere formation and highly converged dislocation energies. We find that hydrogen reduces dislocation core energies but can increase or decrease elastic energies of isolated dislocations and dislocation-dislocation interaction energies depending on character angle. We also find that isotropic elasticity can be well fitted to dislocation energies obtained from simulations if the isotropic elastic constants are not constrained to their anisotropic counterparts. These results are relevant to ongoing efforts in understanding hydrogen embrittlement and provide a foundation for future work in this field.

Abstract
Materials in nature have fascinating properties that serve as a continuous source of inspiration for materials scientists. Accordingly, bio-mimetic and bio-inspired approaches have yielded remarkable structural and functional materials for a plethora of applications. Despite these advances, many properties of natural materials remain challenging or yet impossible to incorporate into synthetic materials. Natural materials are produced by living cells, which sense and process environmental cues and conditions by means of signaling and genetic programs, thereby controlling the biosynthesis, remodeling, functionalization, or degradation of the natural material. In this context, synthetic biology offers unique opportunities in materials sciences by providing direct access to the rational engineering of how a cell senses and processes environmental information and translates them into the properties and functions of materials. Here, we identify and review two main directions by which synthetic biology can be harnessed to provide new impulses for the biologization of the materials sciences: first, the engineering of cells to produce precursors for the subsequent synthesis of materials. This includes materials that are otherwise produced from petrochemical resources, but also materials where the bio-produced substances contribute unique properties and functions not existing in traditional materials. Second, engineered living materials that are formed or assembled by cells or in which cells contribute specific functions while remaining an integral part of the living composite material. We finally provide a perspective of future scientific directions of this promising area of research and discuss science policy that would be required to support research and development in this field.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Hypertension predisposes to atrial fibrillation (AF) - a major risk factor for ischaemic stroke. Since a high dietary salt consumption is associated with hypertension, we investigated the association between urinary sodium excretion as a marker for dietary sodium intake and risk of new-onset AF in community-dwelling adults. METHOD The UK Biobank includes 40- to 69-year-old British residents recruited 2006-2010. Participants were divided into sex-specific quintiles according to 24-hour sodium excretion estimated based on spot samples with the Kawasaki equation. We excluded participants with AF at baseline. Cox regression adjusted for cardiovascular risk factors was used to assess associations with risk of AF, using the third quintile as reference. RESULTS A total of 257 545 women and 215 535 men were included. During up to 10 years' follow-up, 2221 women and 3751 men were diagnosed with AF. There was a tendency for an increased risk of AF in the lowest and highest quintiles of estimated daily salt intake in both women and men. In the fully adjusted model, significant associations were seen amongst men in the lowest and highest quintiles of sodium excretion (hazard ratio, HRQv1 , 1.20; 95% CI, 1.08-1.32, P < 0.001, and HRQv5 1.15, 95% CI, 1.03-1.27, P = 0.011). CONCLUSION We found evidence for a U-shaped association between estimated daily salt intake and AF risk amongst men. A suggestive J-shaped association in women was not statistically confirmed, but analyses were likely underpowered. Our results suggest that above a certain physiological minimum level progressively higher salt intake is associated with increasing risk of AF.

Abstract
Nicotinamide cofactor biomimetics (NCBs) belong to a class of compounds that, as the name suggests, mimic the structures and functions of natural nicotinamide cofactors, namely nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate and their corresponding reduced forms. The first set of NCBs was discovered in the 1930s; these were initially used to study the chemical properties of this class of cofactors as well as understand nicotinamide binding of oxidoreductases. Since then, various NCBs, enzymes, and recycling systems have evolved and lately, new NCBs have been developed and used to run biocatalytic reactions.

Abstract
Understanding the mechanisms and patterns involved in population recoveries is challenging and important in shaping conservation strategies. We used a recovering rear-edge population of brown bears at their southernmost European range in Greece as a case study (2007-2010) to explore the recovery genetics at a species' distribution edge. We used 17 microsatellite and a mitochondrial markers to evaluate genetic structure, estimate effective population size and genetic diversity, and infer gene flow between the identified subpopulations. To understand the larger picture, we also compared the observed genetic diversity of each subpopulation with other brown bear populations in the region. The results indicate that the levels of genetic diversity for bears in western Greece are the lowest recorded in southeastern Europe, but still higher than those of other genetically depauperate bear populations. Apart from a complete separation of bear populations in eastern and western Greece, our results also indicate a considerable genetic sub-structuring in the West. As bear populations in Greece are now recovering, this structure is dissolving through a "recovery cascade" of asymmetric gene flow from South to North between neighboring subpopulations, mediated mainly by males. Our study outlines the importance of small, persisting populations, which can act as "stepping stones" that enable a rapid population expansion and recovery. This in turn makes their importance much greater than their numeric or genetic contribution to a species as a whole.

Abstract
Oxidoreductases are attractive biocatalysts that convert achiral substrates into products of higher value, but they are also for the most part dependent on nicotinamide cofactors. Recently, biomimetic nicotinamide derivatives have received attention as less costly alternatives to natural cofactors. However, recycling of biomimetics is still challenging because there are only limited opportunities. Here, we have characterized various biomimetic cofactors with regard to stability and redox potentials to find the best alternative to natural cofactors. Further, the cofactor spectrum of NADH oxidase from Lactobacillus pentosus (LpNox) could be expanded, and the enzymatic activity was also compared to activities with different small-molecule catalysts. As a result, we succeeded in identifying several strategies for regeneration of oxidized biomimetics.

Abstract
A tonically high level of brain arousal and its hyperstable regulation is supposed to be a pathogenic factor in major depression. Preclinical studies indicate that most antidepressants may counteract this dysregulation. Therefore, it was hypothesized that responders to antidepressants show a) a high level of EEG-vigilance (an indicator of brain arousal) and b) a more stable EEG-vigilance regulation than non-responders. In 65 unmedicated depressed patients 15-min resting-state EEGs were recorded off medication (baseline). In 57 patients an additional EEG was recorded 14 ± 1 days following onset of antidepressant treatment (T1). Response was defined as a ≥50% HAMD-17-improvement after 28 ± 1 days of treatment (T2), resulting in 29 responders and 36 non-responders. Brain arousal was assessed using the Vigilance Algorithm Leipzig (VIGALL 2.1). At baseline responders and non-responders differed in distribution of overall EEG-vigilance stages (F2,133 = 4.780, p = 0.009), with responders showing significantly more high vigilance stage A and less low vigilance stage B. The 15-minutes Time-course of EEG-vigilance did not differ significantly between groups. Exploratory analyses revealed that responders showed a stronger decline in EEG-vigilance levels from baseline to T1 than non-responders (F2,130 = 4.978, p = 0.005). Higher brain arousal level in responders to antidepressants supports the concept that dysregulation of brain arousal is a possible predictor of treatment response in affective disorders.

Abstract
Intellectual disability (ID) affects about 3% of the population and has a male gender bias. Of at least 700 genes currently linked to ID, more than 100 have been identified on the X chromosome, including KIAA2022. KIAA2022 is located on Xq13.3 and is expressed in the developing brain. The protein product of KIAA2022, X‐linked Intellectual Disability Protein Related to Neurite Extension (XPN), is developmentally regulated and is involved in neuronal migration and cell adhesion. The clinical manifestations of loss‐of‐function KIAA2022 mutations have been described previously in 15 males, born from unaffected carrier mothers, but few females. Using whole‐exome sequencing, we identified a cohort of five unrelated female patients with de novo probably gene damaging variants in KIAA2022 and core phenotypic features of ID, developmental delay, epilepsy refractory to treatment, and impaired language, of similar severity as reported for male counterparts. This study supports KIAA2022 as a novel cause of X‐linked dominant ID, and broadens the phenotype for KIAA2022 mutations.

Abstract
The cell-free biocatalytic production of fine chemicals by oxidoreductases has continuously grown over the past years. Since especially dehydrogenases depend on the stoichiometric use of nicotinamide pyridine cofactors, an integrated efficient recycling system is crucial to allow process operation under economic conditions. Lately, the variety of cofactors for biocatalysis was broadened by the utilization of totally synthetic and cheap biomimetics. Though, to date the regeneration has been limited to chemical or electrochemical methods. Here, we report an enzymatic recycling by the flavoprotein NADH-oxidase from Lactobacillus pentosus (LpNox). Since this enzyme has not been described before, we first characterized it in regard to its optimal reaction parameters. We found that the heterologously overexpressed enzyme only contained 13% FAD. In vitro loading of the enzyme with FAD, resulted in a higher specific activity towards its natural cofactor NADH as well as different nicotinamide derived biomimetics. Apart from the enzymatic recycling, which gives water as a by-product by transferring four electrons onto oxygen, unbound FAD can also catalyze the oxidation of biomimetic cofactors. Here a two electron process takes place yielding H2O2 instead. The enzymatic and chemical recycling was compared in regard to reaction kinetics for the natural and biomimetic cofactors. With LpNox and FAD, two recycling strategies for biomimetic cofactors are described with either water or hydrogen peroxide as by-product.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In preclinical studies, the hypothalamic polypeptide melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) has been shown to be involved in depression-like behavior and modulations of MCH and MCH-receptors were proposed as potential new antidepressant drug targets. METHODS For the first time, MCH serum levels were explored in 30 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) prior to (T1) and after 2 (T2) and 4 weeks (T3) of antidepressant treatment and in 30 age- and sex-matched healthy controls by applying a fluorescence immunoassay. RESULTS Levels of MCH did not differ significantly between un-medicated patients (444.11±174.63pg/mL SD) and controls (450.68±210.03pg/mL SD). In MDD patients, MCH levels significantly decreased from T1 to T3 (F=4.663; p=0.013). Post-hoc analyses showed that these changes were limited to patients treated with mirtazapine but not escitalopram and female but not male patients. MCH-levels showed high correlations from T1 to T3 (r≥0.964, p<0.001) and were found to correlate significantly with parameters of sleep within the controls. LIMITATIONS Small sample size. No follow-up measures were performed within the control group. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest peripheral MCH-levels not to be altered in depression but possibly reflecting depression-related state properties that can be modulated by sleep, medication and sex.

Abstract
In this paper, we present a segmentation method for nuclei in microscopy images of tissue sections. The proposed method is completely automatic and performs well in the conflicting aims of speed efficiency, detection accuracy and shape fitting. It proposes an efficient alternative to existing methods ([1], [4]), in achieving the three main usual segmentation steps: (i) background extraction, (ii) seed finding and (iii) seed growing. Eventually, some significant results are depicted and discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To report our centre's experience of outpatient tonsillectomy in children over a 7-year period and to evaluate the postoperative complication rate in this type of procedure compared to tonsillectomy performed in the context of conventional hospitalisation. MATERIAL AND METHODS Retrospective review of medical charts. RESULTS From May 2002 to April 2009, 276 tonsillectomies were performed on an outpatient basis, i.e. 55.4% of all paediatric tonsillectomies, in children with a mean age of 5.28 years. Ninety-six children (34.8%) presented clinical OSAS. Development of an early postoperative complication (before H8) required conventional hospitalisation on D0 in six (2.1%) of these 276 children operated on an outpatient basis: early postoperative bleeding in four cases (1.4%), which required reoperation to control bleeding in three cases, refusal to feed in one case (0.3%), and a parental problem in one case (0.3%). Postoperative complications occurring after H8 required readmission in six cases (2.1%): pain and feeding difficulties in two cases (0.7%) on D1 and D5, respectively, bleeding in four cases (1.4%) with reoperation before H24 for one patient, D5 for two patients and D7 for one patient. Only one case of bleeding occurred between H8 and H24. No perioperative respiratory complications were observed in children with clinical OSAS. CONCLUSION The results of this study show that, in line with international publications and meta-analyses, post-tonsillectomy complications between H8 and H24 postoperatively, mainly bleeding, are exceptional. Respiratory complications usually occur in high-risk clinical settings that are not eligible for outpatient surgery. Outpatient tonsillectomy is therefore a safe procedure in children presenting all of the required medical, social and organizational conditions.

Abstract
Aminoglycosides are concentration-dependent killing antibiotics, so that it is necessary to obtain elevated peak levels to reach the pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic objectives. Because of their nephrotoxicity, this class of antibiotics are frequently underprescribed and giving at an insufficient dosage when prescribed. That is why therapeutical drug monitoring (TDM) of aminoglycosides is recommanded to assess efficacy. Unfortunately, this TDM allows not a dosage adaptation on the first dose of aminoglycosides. The aim of the work was to elaborate a model using simple pharmacokinetics formulae to estimate gentamicin peak levels and so to propose an optimal a priori dosage on the first dose of gentamicin. The final model was tested out on 24 patients treated by gentamicin. The model was able to predict gentamicin peak levels in 62% of patients with a 10% precision and in 79% of patients with a 15% precision. Using this simple and practical tool might avoid under-dosage of gentamicin and clinical failure due to the selection of resistant bacteriae.

Abstract
A two-layer gold surface is developed for use with surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS) consisting of a conducting underlayer onto which Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) are grown by self-catalyzed electroless deposition. AuNPs are grown on protruding substructures of the 25 nm thin underlayer. The enhancement factor of the two-layer gold surface is controlled by the growth conditions. Cytochrome c adsorbed to a self-assembled monolayer of mercaptoethanol is used as a reference system. Under optimum conditions the absorbance of the amide I band is increased by a factor of 5 versus the classical SEIRAS surface. Reversible reduction/oxidation of cytochrome c on the two-layer gold surface is shown to take place by cyclic voltammetry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study was designed to assess the postoperative quality of life (QoL) of 30 patients successfully treated with a laryngectomy. METHODS QoL was evaluated with two validated questionnaires (EORTC-QLQ-C30 and EORTC-QLQ-H&N35) during the regular outpatient follow-up. To analyse the long-term quality of life, we divided our collective into two groups of patients; one consisting of patients whose treatment had been completed less than five years ago and one whose therapy had been finished more than five years ago. RESULTS The collective consisted of 24 men (80 %) and 6 (20 %) women with a mean age of 58.8 +/- 8.7 years. Mean follow-up was 53 months (range: 12 - 110). Most patients (n = 15, 50 %) had a tumor stadium IV after UICC. Voice rehabilitation was achieved in all patients with a Provoxreg voice prosthesis. The global QoL was rated as satisfying with a mean value of 62. The analysis of the specific questionnaire showed mostly a limitation of smell. Patients, whose treatment was longer than five years ago, showed a slight improvement in the global QoL. Overall we could not find a significant difference concerning the QoL between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS In our study the QoL of laryngectomized patients was satisfying. The most common symptoms were problems with smell, cough and dyspnoea.

Abstract
A self-consistent-field theory was developed in the grand canonical ensemble formulation to study transitions in a helix-coil multiblock globule. Helical and coil parts are treated as stiff rods and self-avoiding walks of variable lengths correspondingly. The resulting field theory takes, in addition to the conventional Zimm-Bragg, [J. Chem. Phys. 31, 526 (1959)] parameters, also three-dimensional interaction terms into account. The appropriate differential equations which determine the self-consistent fields were solved numerically with finite element method. Three different phase states are found: open chain, amorphous globule, and nematic liquid-crystalline (LC) globule. The LC-globule formation is driven by the interplay between the hydrophobic helical segment attraction and the anisotropic globule surface energy of an entropic nature. The full phase diagram of the helix-coil copolymer was calculated and thoroughly discussed. The suggested theory shows a clear interplay between secondary and tertiary structures in globular homopolypeptides.

Abstract
The behavior of rod-coil diblock copolymers close to a surface is discussed by using extended scaling methods. The copolymers are immersed in selective solvent such that the rods are likely to aggregate to gain energy. The rods are assumed to align only parallel to each other, such that they gain a maximum energy by forming liquid crystalline structures. If an aggregate of these copolymers adsorbs with the rods parallel to the surface the rods shift with respect to each other to allow for the chains to gain entropy. It is shown that this shift decays with increasing distance from the surface. The profile of this decay away from the surface is calculated by minimization of the total free energy of the system. The stability of such an adsorbed aggregate and other possible configurations are discussed as well.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is a very common disease. Nasal continuous positive airway pressure is a useful and efficient treatment but compliance depends on several factors including the degree of nasal obstruction. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of surgical correction of nasal obstruction on compliance to nasal continuous positive airway pressure in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. MATERIAL AND METHODS This retrospective study (from March 1998 to March 2000) included ten patients suffering from a severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (apnea-hypopnea index greater than 30 per hour) treated by nasal continuous positive airway pressure for at least three months and presenting an anatomic nasal obstruction limiting the use of nasal continuous positive airway pressure. Surgical procedures included one septoplasty, two inferior turbinectomies and seven septoplasties with turbinectomies. RESULTS The post-operative polysomnography showed that surgical correction of nasal obstruction had no effect on obstructive sleep apnea syndrome severity (no significative change of apnea hypopnea index after surgery) but allowed the use of lower nasal continuous positive airway pressure levels (7.1 mmHg after surgery versus 10 mmHg before) and improved compliance to treatment (six compliant patients after surgery versus no compliant patient before). These results were compared with those published in the literature. CONCLUSION An examination of the nose has to be performed before initiating nasal continuous positive airway pressure. If nasal continuous positive airway pressure cannot be tolerated because of nasal obstruction, surgery is required to improve compliance and tolerance to treatment.

Abstract
We have developed improved analyzer multilayers for the detection of aluminium (Al) and boron (B) on silicon (Si) wafers with wavelength-dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometers. For the detection of Al on Si wafers we show that WSi(2)/Si and Ta/Si multilayers provide detection limits that are 42% and 60% better, respectively, than with currently used W/Si multilayers. For the detection of B on Si wafers we show that La/B(4)C multilayers improve the detection limit by approximately 28% compared with a conventionally used Mo/B(4)C multilayer.

Abstract
La/B(4)C multilayers have been fabricated by magnetron sputtering for use as x-ray mirrors at energies below 190 eV, particularly for detection of boron K and alpha x rays at 183 eV, their performance has been compared with that of Mo/B(4)C multilayers, which are currently the best-performing multilayers for this energy range. Transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron soft-x-ray reflectometry were used to study the structural quality of the multilayers and their performance as x-ray mirrors. The results show a significant improvement of the peak reflectivity and the spectral purity, indicating that La/B(4)C has a high potential to replace Mo/B(4)C in many x-ray optical applications below 190 eV.

Abstract
Colorectal cancers exhibit a red fluorescence. The nature of the responsible fluorophore and its eventual diagnostic potential were investigated. Thirty-three consecutive colorectal resection specimen, 32 of which with histologically confirmed cancer, and a total of 1053 palpable mesenteric nodes were fluorimetrically characterized ex vivo. Furthermore, frozen material from 28 patients was analyzed, selected for the availability of primary tumor material and metastatic tissue, e.g., lymphatic and liver metastases from the same patient. Biochemical characterization was carried out through chemical extraction and reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The fluorescence spectra of tissues, tissue extracts, and standard solutions of porphyrins were determined using a pulsed solid-state laser system for excitation and an imaging polychromator, together with an intensified CCD camera for time-delayed observation. Protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) was identified as the predominant fluorophore in primary tumors and their metastases. The fluorophore occurred in the absence of necrosis and in sterile locations. In untreated cases (n = 24), PpIX fluorescence discriminates metastatically involved lymph nodes from all other palpable nodes with a sensitivity of 62% at a specificity of 78% (P < 0.0001). After neoadjuvant treatment of rectal cancer, the PpIX fluorescence level of the primary tumors was reduced and a discrimination of lymph nodes based on PpIX-fluorescence was impossible. We conclude that colorectal cancer metastases accumulate diagnostic levels of endogenous PpIX as a result of a tumor-specific metabolic alteration.

Abstract
The cytoplasmic disassembly of Ran.GTP.importin and Ran.GTP.exportin. cargo complexes is an essential step in the corresponding nuclear import and export cycles. It has previously been shown that such disassembly can be mediated by RanBP1 in the presence of RanGAP. The nuclear pore complex protein RanBP2 (Nup358) contains four Ran-binding domains (RanBDi) that might function like RanBP1. We used biophysical assays based on fluorescence-labeled probes and on surface plasmon resonance to investigate the dynamic interplay of Ran in its GDP- and GTP-complexed states with RanBDis and with importin-beta. We show that RanBP1 and the four RanBDis from RanBP2 have comparable affinities for Ran.GTP (10(8)-10(9) M(-1)). Deletion of Ran's C-terminal (211)DEDDDL(216) sequence weakens the interaction of Ran.GTP with RanBPis approximately 2000-fold, but accelerates the association of Ran.GTP with importin-beta 10-fold. Importin-beta binds Ran.GTP with a moderate rate, but attains a high affinity for Ran (K(D) = 140 pM) via an extremely low dissociation rate of 10(-5) s(-)(1). Association with Ran is accelerated 3-fold in the presence of RanBP1, which presumably prevents steric hindrance caused by the Ran C-terminus. In addition, we show that the RanBDis of RanBP2 are full equivalents of RanBP1 in that they also costimulate RanGAP-catalyzed GTP hydrolysis in Ran and relieve the GTPase block in a Ran.GTP.transportin complex. Our data suggest that the C-terminus of Ran functions like a loose tether in Ran.GTP complexes of importins or exportins that exit the nucleus. This flag is then recognized by the multiple RanBDis at or near the nuclear pore complex, allowing efficient disassembly of these Ran.GTP complexes.

Abstract
In rodents, the vaginal epithelium undergoes cyclical changes with an alternating pattern of keratinization and mucification. It has been known for decades that vitamin A and its active form retinoic acid are responsible for normal epithelial homeostasis. However, it has not so far been certain which enzymes catalyze the first and rate-limiting step in retinoic acid synthesis. By means of microdissection and ultrathin-layer gel electrophoresis, alcohol dehydrogenase isoenzyme activity was determined quantitatively in the various layers of the vaginal mucous membrane. It was found that, in the rat, only alcohol dehydrogenase 3 and 4 are expressed. Marked cyclical changes of alcohol dehydrogenase 4 activity in the stratum germinativum of the vaginal epithelium strongly support the assumption that this isoenzyme is responsible for retinoic acid synthesis, and that it is essential for the changes accompanying keratinization and mucification.

Abstract
Cocaine abuse during adolescence represents a significant health risk because of the potential for both acute and long-term negative physical and psychological sequelae, including increased aggressive behavior. This study examined the effects of chronic adolescent cocaine exposure on aggression in an animal model. It was hypothesized that chronic cocaine exposure during adolescence predisposes animals to heightened levels of aggressive behavior. To test this hypothesis, adolescent male golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) were administered cocaine hydrochloride during their entire adolescent development (Postnatal Days 27-54) and then tested for offensive aggression using the resident-intruder model. Animals treated with low-dose cocaine during adolescence showed significantly elevated measures of offensive aggression (i.e., increased number of bites, attacks, and decreased latencies to bite), whereas measures of social communication, sexual motivation and motor activity remained constant. Cocaine-treated animals did not differ in body weight gain from controls, suggesting no dramatic physiological effects of adolescent cocaine exposure on body growth at the doses tested.

Abstract
The present study examines the hypothesis that exposure to anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) during adolescent development predisposes hamsters to heightened levels of aggressive behavior by influencing the anterior hypothalamic-arginine vasopressin (AH-AVP) neural system. To test this, adolescent male hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) were treated with high doses of AAS, tested for offensive aggression in the absence or presence of AH-AVP receptor antagonists, and then examined for changes in AH-AVP expression and neural organization. AAS exposure during adolescence significantly increased aggression intensity (number of attacks and bites) and initiation (latency to the first bite). Yet, only increases in aggression intensity were inhibited by AH-AVP receptor antagonism. Adolescent AAS-treated hamsters showed significant increases in AH-AVP fiber density and peptide content. However, no alterations in AH-AVP neuronal organization or mRNA expression were found. Together, these data suggest that adolescent AAS exposure increase aggression intensity by altering AH-AVP expression and activity, providing direct evidence for a causal role of AH-AVP expression and function in early onset AAS-stimulated aggression.

Abstract
The protein Ran is a small GTP-binding protein that binds to two types of effector inside the cell: Ran-binding proteins, which have a role in terminating export processes from the nucleus to the cytoplasm, and importin-beta-like molecules that bind cargo proteins during nuclear transport. The Ran-binding domain is a conserved sequence motif found in several proteins that participate in these transport processes. The Ran-binding protein RanBP2 contains four of these domains and constitutes a large part of the cytoplasmic fibrils that extend from the nuclear-pore complex. The structure of Ran bound to a non-hydrolysable GTP analogue (Ran x GppNHp) in complex with the first Ran-binding domain (RanBD1) of human RanBP2 reveals not only that RanBD1 has a pleckstrin-homology domain fold, but also that the switch-I region of Ran x GppNHp resembles the canonical Ras GppNHp structure and that the carboxy terminus of Ran is wrapped around RanBD1, contacting a basic patch on RanBD1 through its acidic end. This molecular 'embrace' enables RanBDs to sequester the Ran carboxy terminus, triggering the dissociation of Ran x GTP from importin-beta-related transport factors and facilitating GTP hydrolysis by the GTPase-activating protein ranGAP. Such a mechanism represents a new type of switch mechanism and regulatory protein-protein interaction for a Ras-related protein.

Abstract
Bilateral traumatic dissection of an internal carotid artery (BTDIC) after a closed injury is very rare. We report a case of bilateral thrombosis caused by internal carotid artery dissection due to a closed injury. The 22 cases documented in the literature are also reviewed. Six of the patients (26%) were asymptomatic at the initial examination, but all developed secondary symptoms, during the first 48 hours. Sixteen patients (69%) had associated traumatic lesions. Six patients died during the week after the accident, all of them had initial neurological symptoms. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provided more items of information than angiography, showing a dissection on an occluded artery and a clearer picture of the length of the dissection, directly visualizing the wall hematoma and a residual signal that showed the persistence or arrest of blood flow. Treatment of BTDIC is based on early anticoagulation therapy.

Abstract
Acremonium chrysogenum, a producer of cephalosporin C, was subjected to DNA-mediated transformations using a vector without bacterial DNA sequences. Recombinant fungal strains were generated with a gel-purified DNA fragment, carrying only the mutated beta-tubulin gene from A. chrysogenum. The lack of any bacterial DNA was verified by Southern hybridization analysis and polymerase chain reaction amplifications to detect even residual DNA sequences. This procedure can be referred to as a self-cloning experiment for which less restricted working regulations are needed. Finally, the transfer of a synthetic hirudin gene by cotransformation demonstrated that any DNA molecule can be introduced into the A. chrysogenum genome without bacterial marker genes. This seems to be highly relevant for biotechnical processes in which safe recombinant producer strains are required to satisfy governmental restrictions.
