Feeding ecology of Ellochelon vaigiensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1825) living in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam

Ellochelon vaigiensis (squaretail mullet) adapts to a wide salt spectrum, grows quickly and is easy to raise with other species, so it is the object of attention in aquaculture. Information on the biology and ecology of the species, diet, in particular, is still scattered. Here, we explore the feeding habit, feeding intensity, and food composition of the squaretail mullet. A total of 942 fish (526 males and 416 females) were collected from November 2020 to October 2021 at four coastal sites in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. The squaretail mullet is an algi‐omnivorous fish, as their relative gut length (1.81) falls into the range 1–3, and the diet is mostly based on algae. The feeding intensity is high due to the high value of the fullness index (4.39 ± 0.08%). The fullness index did not vary by sampling site and month, while RGL and FI changed depending on sex. Bacillariophyta (49.13%), detritus derived from organic matter (30.37%), and Cyanophyta (18.39%) are the dominant food items in the diet composition of E. vaigiensis, in which detritus is the most important food with the highest IRI index. Besides, Euglenophyta (1.00%), Chlorophyta (0.95%), Paramecium (0.06%), Copepoda (0.04%), Rotatoria (0.03%), Polychaeta (0.02%), and Cladocera (0.01%) are also recorded and ranked based on their biovolume. Some differences in diet composition are observed between immature and mature at different seasons and their interactions. Our results increase the knowledge about the feeding ecology of squaretail mullet and can help the sustainable management of this commercially important fish species.

Impacts of marine heatwaves on pearl oysters are alleviated following repeated exposure

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) have occurred with increasing duration, frequency and intensity in the past decade in the South China Sea, posing serious threats to marine ecosystems and fisheries. However, the impact of MHWs on marine bivalves - one of the most ecologically and economically important fauna in coastal ecosystems - remains largely unknown. Here, we investigated physiological responses of the pearl oyster, Pinctada maxima inhabiting a newly identified climate change hotspot (Beibu Gulf, South China Sea) to short-lasting and repeatedly-occurring MHWs scenarios. Following 3-day exposure to short-lasting MHWs scenarios with water temperature rapidly arising from 24 °C to 28 °C, 32 °C and 36 °C, respectively, mortality rates of pearl oysters increased, and especially they suffered 100% mortality at 36 °C. Activities of enzymes including acid phosphatase (ACP), alkaline phosphatase (AKP), glutathione (GSH) and level of malondialdehyde (MDA) increased significantly with increasing intensity and duration of MHWs, indicating thermal stress responses. When exposed to repeatedly-occurring MHWs scenarios, mortality rates of pearl oysters increased slightly, and thermal stress responses were alleviated, as exemplified by significant decreases in ACP, AKP, GSH and MDA activities compared with those during short-lasting MHWs scenarios, demonstrating the potential of P. maxima to acclimate rapidly to MHWs. These findings advance our understanding of how marine bivalves respond to MHWs scenarios varying in duration, frequency, and intensity.

Seasonal variation of total mercury transfer through a tropical mangrove food web, Setiu Wetlands

Seasonal variations in total mercury concentrations [Hg] and trophic transfer through the food web were assessed using stable isotopic tracers for the Setiu Wetlands, Terengganu. The [Hg] measured in surface sediments and biota varied inversely between wet and dry seasons. Increased rainfall and water disturbance during the wet season are suggested as the main factors releasing Hg from surface sediments and enhancing the bioavailability of Hg to biota. The elevated Hg levels associated with the leaf stage suggested that litterfall and atmospheric deposition may be the main Hg inputs into mangrove food webs. The positive relationships between log [Hg] and δ¹⁵N provided evidence for Hg biomagnification, however low trophic magnification slopes in both seasons indicated that the ecological risk of Hg in the wetland would be negligible. The [Hg] in fish and commercial crabs were below the permitted limits for human consumption.

Effects of tourism-derived sewage on coral reefs: Isotopic assessments identify effective bioindicators

Pulau Redang and Pulau Tioman have experienced huge tourism growth over the last two decades, but minimal sewage treatment may threaten the resilience of their coral reefs. This study uses stable isotope techniques to identify suitable bioindicators of sewage nutrients (δ¹⁵N) at these islands by measuring macroalgae (Lobophora spp.), gastropods (Drupella spp.), scleractinian coral (Acropora spp.), and leather coral (Sinularia spp.). At tourist hubs using seepage septic tank systems, enrichment of Acropora δ¹⁵N (Redang, +0.7‰) and Sinularia δ¹⁵N (Tioman, +0.4‰) compared to pristine background levels indicate enhanced sewage nutrient discharge. Carbon isotopes and survey data suggest that sedimentation did not confound these δ¹⁵N trends. Potential damaging effects of sewage discharge on the coral reef communities at both islands are highlighted by strong correlations between Acropora δ¹⁵N and regional variation in coral reef community structure, and exclusive occurrence of degraded reefs at regions of high sewage influence.

Mercury Bioaccumulation in Tropical Mangrove Wetland Fishes: Evaluating Potential Risk to Coastal Wildlife

The present study, aimed at observing the total concentration of mercury (Hg) in edible finfish species with an implication to human health risk, was carried out from the Setiu mangrove wetlands on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Out of 20 species observed, the highest Hg concentrations were found among carnivores-fish/invertebrate-feeders, followed by omnivores and carnivores-invertebrate-feeders, while the lowest concentrations in herbivores. The Hg concentrations varied widely with fish species and body size, from 0.12 to 2.10 mg/kg dry weight. A positive relationship between body weight and Hg concentration was observed in particular for Toxotes jaculatrix and Tetraodon nigroviridis. Besides the permissible range of Hg concentration up to 0.3 mg/kg (cf. United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA)) in majority of species, the carnivore feeders such as Acanthopagrus pacificus, Gerres filamentosus, and Caranx ignobilis have shown excess amounts (> 0.40 mg/kg flesh weight) that raising concerns over the consumption by local people. However, the weekly intake of mercury-estimated through the fish consumption in all three trophic levels-suggests that the present Hg concentrations are still within the range of Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake (PTWI) reported by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA). Perhaps, a multi-species design for Hg monitoring at Setiu wetlands would be able to provide further insights into the level of toxicity transfer among other aquatic organisms and thereby a strong health risk assessment for the local communities.

Temporal and spatial changes in persistent organic pollutants in Vietnamese coastal waters detected from plastic resin pellets

Plastic resin pellets collected at Minh Chau island and Ba Lat estuary between 2007 and 2014 in Vietnam were analyzed for dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethanes (DDTs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs). The study was carried out as part of the International Pellet Watch program for monitoring the global distribution of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Higher levels of DDTs compared to PCBs indicated agricultural inputs rather than industrial discharges in the region. Most POP concentrations on both beaches decreased over the period, with the exception of HCH isomers. Though the concentration of DDTs showed a drastic decline on both beaches between 2007/2008 and 2014, DDTs accounted for 60-80% of total DDTs, suggesting that there is still a fresh input of these chemicals in the region. This study strongly recommends further investigations to track temporal and spatial patterns of POP levels in the marine environment using plastic resin pellets.

Distribution of trace metals and methylmercury in soft tissues of the freshwater eel Anguilla marmorata in Vietnam

This study investigated trace metals in water, sediment, and various organs of the mature eel Anguilla marmorata in the Ba River, Vietnam. The metal concentrations in water and sediment did not exceed the Vietnam water criteria and sediment background concentration, except for Mn and Pb in sediment. The results of metal analysis in eel specimens indicated that the liver and kidney were the dominant organs for almost all trace metals, whereas muscle tended to accumulate high levels of Hg and approximately 87.4-100% of Hg was methylmercury. A strong positive correlation between mercury levels in muscle and age were found, but there was no correlation between mercury and body size. Interestingly, a high concentration of Zn was found in the gonad and liver; this indicated that high levels of Zn in the liver might play a physiologically important role in the eel's biological mechanisms during gonadal maturation. Though almost none of the metal concentrations in the muscle exceeded the reference doses of the U.S. EPA, approximately 80% of eels from the river contained mercury exceeding the recommended levels (0.30 microg/g) of the U.S. EPA and might present a risk for human consumption.

Anticonvulsant efficacy of ADCI (5-aminocarbonyl-10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a,d]cyclohepten-5,10-imine) after acute and chronic dosing in mice

ADCI (5-aminocarbonyl-10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a,d]cyclohepten-5, 10-imine), a low-affinity uncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist, is a broad-spectrum anticonvulsant with a favorable side-effect profile. In the present study, we sought to determine if tolerance develops to the anticonvulsant activity of ADCI, using the maximal electroshock (MES) test to assess seizure protection. Mice were treated with three daily injections of a 2 x ED50 dose for MES protection (18 mg/kg, intraperitoneally, i.p.) or vehicle for 7 or 14 days. On the day after the chronic treatment protocol, all animals received a challenge dose of ADCI (18 mg/kg) and 15 min later were evaluated in the MES test. In control animals, 83-94% of animals were protected and the ADCI plasma levels immediately after the MES test were 5.5-9.7 micrograms/ml. In treated animals, 29 and 0% of animals were protected at 7 and 14 days, respectively, and the ADCI plasma levels were 77 and 52% of the control values. [3H]Dizocilpine binding to brain NMDA receptors was unaltered by the chronic drug treatment. In subsequent experiments, we determined that 14-day chronically treated animals could be completely protected by increased doses of ADCI (ED50 28.9 mg/kg). In both naive and chronically treated animals receiving a challenge dose of ADCI, plasma drug levels decreased in two phases, the first with a time constant of approximately 55 min and the second with a much slower rate. The estimated plasma concentrations of ADCI reflecting threshold (3-5 micrograms/ml) and 50% protection (5-7.5 micrograms/mg) were similar in naive and chronic animals.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Repeated electroconvulsive shock produces long-lasting increases in messenger RNA expression of corticotropin-releasing hormone and tyrosine hydroxylase in rat brain. Therapeutic implications

Electroconvulsive shock (ECS) is a highly effective therapy for the treatment of major depression, but its mechanisms of action are not known. We report that repeated ECS in rats produces enduring changes in two clinically relevant stress-responsive brain systems: (a) the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis regulated by corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) in the paraventricular nucleus; and (b) the NE system in the locus coeruleus regulated by tyrosine hydroxylase (TH). CRH and TH mRNA levels in these brain regions were assessed by in situ hybridization histochemistry. A single interaural ECS elevated TH but not CRH mRNA measured 24 h later. Repeated daily treatments (3, 7, or 14) elevated both mRNAs, maximally with 7, correlating with the time course of clinical efficacy. The elevations persisted for 3 (CRH) or 8 wk (TH) after the ECS. No other therapeutic treatment is known to produce such long-lasting changes in central nervous system gene expression. The time course of events (delayed onset, long duration) implicate CRH as a principal mediator of the antidepressant effects of ECS. The locus coeruleus-NE system may be important in initiating the central nervous system response.
