Abstract
Thanatophoric dysplasia (TD) is a lethal form of short-limb skeletal dysplasia that is associated with macrocephaly, and variably cloverleaf skull. Two types of TD are clinically recognized, TD1 and TD2, mainly distinguished by their radiographic characteristics. The differences between the two are principally observed in the femur, which appears curved in TD1, while it remains straight but with a proximal medial spike in TD2, and are a less severe overall affectation in TD2. Both types of TD are caused by mutations in different functional domains of the FGFR3 gene. However, whereas several mutations in the different domains of FGFR3 cause TD1, the K650E mutation involving the change of a lysine to glutamic acid ("Lys650Glu") has been found in all TD2 cases to date. Here we describe a newborn infant with TD2 associated with brain defects that have either been infrequently observed (encephalocele) or not hitherto described (holoprosencephaly). Based on recent studies, we consider encephaloceles described in TD to be pseudoencephaloceles, since they are secondary to the intracranial pressure generated by severe hydrocephaly and to severe cranial structural anomalies. Finally, to analyze the mechanisms of holoprosencephaly observed in the case described here, we include a concise review on the current understanding of how FGFs and their receptors are expressed in the rostral signaling center (particularly Fgf8). In addition, we evaluated recent observations that FGF ligands and receptors (including FGFR3) act in concert to organize the whole telencephalon activity, rather than independently patterning different areas.

Abstract
The Gray platelet syndrome (GPS) is a rare inherited disorder linked to undefined molecular abnormalities that prevent the formation and maturation of alpha-granules. Here, we report studies on two patients from unrelated families that confirm phenotypic heterogeneity in the disease. First we used immunoelectron microscopy (I-EM) to confirm that TREM-like transcript-1 (TLT-1) is mostly localized to alpha-granule membranes of normal platelets. Then we performed Western blotting (WB) and flow cytometry with permeabilized platelets to show that TLT-1 is selectively reduced in the platelets of patient 1, previously noted to be deficient in glycoprotein (GP)VI (Nurden et al., Blood 2004; 104: 107-114). Yet both TLT-1 and GPVI were normally expressed in platelets of patient 2. Usual levels of JAM-C and claudin-5, also members of the immunoglobulin receptor family, were detected in platelets of both patients. In contrast, P-selectin was markedly decreased for patient 1 but not patient 2. Two metalloproteases, MMP-2 and MMP-9 were normally present. As predicted, platelets of patient 1 showed little labelling for TLT-1 in I-EM, whereas residual Fg was seen in small vesicular structures and P-selectin lining vacuoles or channels of what may be elements of the surface-connected canalicular system. Our results identify TLT-1 as a glycoprotein potentially targeted in platelets of GPS patients, while decreases in at least three membrane glycoproteins suggest that an unidentified proteolytic activity may contribute to the phenotype in some patients with this rare disease.

Abstract
A new method based on matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) extraction was studied for the extraction of amitrole (3-amino-1,2,4-triazole), and its metabolite urazole (3,5-dihydroxy-1,2,4-triazole), in apple samples. The influence of experimental conditions on the yield of the extraction process and on the efficiency of the cleanup step was evaluated. Determination was carried out by capillary electrophoresis (CE) with electrochemical detection, demonstrating the compatibility between MSPD and CE techniques. The method has been successfully applied to different apple varieties. Recoveries in samples spiked at 1.6 and 1.7 microg g(-1) for amitrole and urazole were 88 and 82%, respectively. The limits of detection were 0.4 microg g(-1) for both compounds using electrochemical detection.

Abstract
Reactions of copper(I) halides with a series of thiosemicarbazone ligands (Htsc) in the presence of triphenylphosphine (Ph(3)P) in acetonitrile have yielded three types of complexes: (i) monomers, [CuX(eta1-S-Htsc)(Ph3P)2] [X, Htsc = I (1), Br (2), benzaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (Hbtsc); I (5), Br (6), Cl (7), pyridine-2-carbaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (Hpytsc)], (ii) halogen-bridged dimers, [Cu2(mu2-X)2(eta1-S-Htsc)2(Ph3P)2] [X, Htsc = Br (3), Hbtsc; I (8), furan-2-carbaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (Hftsc); I (11), thiophene-2-carbaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (Httsc)], and (iii) sulfur-bridged dimers, [Cu2X2(mu2-S-Htsc)2(Ph3P)2] [X, Htsc = Cl (4), Hbtsc; Br (9), Cl (10), pyrrole-2-carbaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (Hptsc); Br (12), Httsc]. All of these complexes have been characterized with the help of elemental analysis, IR, 1H, 13C, or 31P NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography (1-12). In all of the complexes, thiosemicarbazones are acting as neutral S-donor ligands in eta()S or mu2-S bonding modes. The Cu...Cu separations in the Cu(mu2-X)2Cu and Cu(mu2-S)2Cu cores lie in the ranges 2.981(1)-3.2247(6) and 2.813(1)-3.2329(8) Angstroms, respectively. The geometry around each Cu center in monomers and dimers may be treated as distorted tetrahedral. Ab initio density functional theory calculations on model monomeric and dimeric complexes of the simplest thiosemicarbazone [H2C=N-NH-C(S)-NH2, Htsc] have revealed that monomers and halogen-bridged dimers have similar stability and that sulfur-bridged dimers are stable only when halogen atoms are engaged in hydrogen bonding with the solvent of crystallization or H2O molecules.

Abstract
In this paper, capillary zone electrophoresis with amperometric detection (CZE-AD) was first applied to the simultaneous separation and determination of amitrole and urazole in water samples. A simple end-column electrochemical detector was used in combination with a commercially available capillary electrophoresis instrument with UV detection. The effects of several important factors were investigated to find optimum conditions. A carbon disk electrode was used as working electrode. Separation and determination of these compounds in water samples were performed in 0.030 mol l(-1) acetate buffers at pH 4.5, 25 kV as separation voltage and the samples were introduced by hydrodynamic mode for 1.5 s. Most of the studies realized showed that the direct electrochemical detection is more sensitive and selective than UV detection. Under the optimum conditions, excellent linearity was observed between peak amperometric signal and analyte concentrations in the range of 0.19-1.35 mg l(-1) for amitrole and 0.20-1.62 mg l(-1) for urazole. The detection limits were 63 and 68 microg l(-1) for amitrole and urazole, respectively. The utility of this method was demonstrated by monitoring water samples, and the assay results were satisfactory. The detection limits using a previous preconcentration step for amitrole and urazole in spiked mineral water samples were 0.6 and 1.0 microg l(-1) for amitrole and urazole, respectively.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of the present study was to identify characteristics in women diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) that could be predictive of congenital malformations in their infants. METHODS Using data from the Spanish Collaborative Study of Congenital Malformations (ECEMC), a hospital-based case-control study and surveillance system, we assessed the relationship between a number of maternal variables, including pre-gestational body mass index (BMI), and specific congenital malformations in their infants. RESULTS The overall risk for a selected group of congenital malformations in an infant of an obese mother with GDM compared with an obese mother with normal glucose tolerance (NGT) was 2.78 (1.38-5.55, P < 0.001). Within the group of mothers with GDM, obesity (BMI > or = 30 kg/m2) was associated with a significantly increased risk of cardiovascular defects compared with non-obese women [OR = 2.82 (1.31-7.04), P < 0.01]. In mothers with NGT, pre-gestational BMI was not associated with congenital malformations. CONCLUSION Pre-gestational obesity is a predictive variable for congenital malformations in infants of mothers with GDM. The greater their BMI, the higher the risk for congenital malformations in their offspring. Given the blastogenic origin of the congenital defects identified, and the relationship between obesity and Type 2 diabetes, it is probable that this increased risk is as a result of previously unidentified pre-gestational diabetes mellitus (PGD). It is important that overweight and obese women planning a pregnancy be evaluated for the presence of diabetes.

Abstract
A rapid multiresidue method has been developed for the analysis of seven phenylurea herbicides in the presence of two s-triazines in environmental waters. A simple end-column electrochemical detector was used in combination with a commercially-available capillary electrophoresis instrument with UV detection. The determination of phenylurea pesticides using micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography with electrochemical detection represents the first such determination that has been reported. In both detection systems, linear ranges were obtained for the seven phenylurea herbicides at concentrations lower than 2.0x10(-5) mol l(-1), in 0.020 mol l(-1) phosphoric acid at pH 7.0 and containing 0.020 mol l(-1) of sodium dodecylsulfate, in order to obtain selectivity in the additional separation by a micellar distribution process. Under these conditions a detection limit lower than 5.0x10(-6) mol l(-1) (0.25 pmol of pesticide) was achieved for most of them. The pesticides were resolved in less than 30 min.

Abstract
We propose a new NMR method to measure and follow the evolution of the surface specific area, Sp, of a porous cement-based material. This method, that does not require any preliminary drying process, uses nuclear magnetic relaxation dispersion (NMRD), the measurement of spin-lattice relaxation rate as a function of magnetic field strength or nuclear Larmor frequency. The method is applied for three different mortars samples prepared by mixing cement, sand, silica fume, water and superplasticizer with a water to cement ratio w/c=0.25, 0.38 and 0.65, respectively. The evolution of Sp grows linearly with the degree of advancement of chemical reactions measured by thermal heating and we evidence two relaxation processes independent of the w/c ratio.

Abstract
We show how nuclear magnetic spin-lattice relaxation dispersion of 1H water can provide a direct reliable value of the specific surface area of a cement-based material. The remarkable features of the relaxation dispersion support an interpretation in terms of coupled solid-liquid relaxation at pore interfaces, surface diffusion, and nuclear paramagnetic relaxation. The measurement is sufficiently fast to be applied continuously during the progressive hydration and setting of the material. This method is relevant to other chemically reactive porous media in chemical engineering and oil recovery.

Abstract
In 1997, Narchi and Kulaylat, studying the incidence of Down syndrome in infants of gestational diabetic mothers, concluded that maternal diabetes increases the risk for Down syndrome, but failed to control the maternal age in their analysis. Using data from the Spanish Collaborative Study of Congenital Malformations (ECEMC), we analyzed the relationship between Down syndrome and maternal diabetes mellitus, and maternal gestational diabetes, controlling the maternal age through the pair-matching analysis, stratifying by maternal age and logistic regression analysis. The analyses show that maternal age is related either to Down syndrome as well as to both types of maternal diabetes. Thus, the overall analysis could be confounded by maternal age. Once we controlled the maternal age, the risk of maternal diabetes mellitus for Down syndrome is: odds ratio (OR) = 0.92 (0.41-2.07); P = 0.83. Controlling maternal age in gestational diabetes, the risk is OR = 1.18 (0.61-2.35); P > 0.70. Based on our results, we conclude that Down syndrome is related to maternal age, but does not seem to be related to any type of maternal diabetes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE There are some studies which analyzed the relationship between prenatal exposure to oral contraceptives (OCs) and Down syndrome, with conflicting results even in women using OCs and conceiving at different intervals after discontinuing the use of contraceptive pills. We analyzed the risk for Down syndrome in infants of women who become pregnant while taking OC. STUDY DESIGN We used the data from the Spanish Collaborative Study of Congenital Malformations (ECEMC). The ECEMC is a case-control study and surveillance system. For each malformed infant (case), the next non-malformed infant of the same sex born in the same hospital is selected as a control subject, from whom the collaborating physicians collected the same data as for the malformed infant. For the present study, we used two different approaches. First, the pair-matching analysis. Second, a case-control using the rest of the total of 17,183 controls from the ECEMC database with specified data on maternal use of OCs and maternal age. To control for maternal age, we used a logistic regression analysis. RESULTS The results show an increased risk of 2.8-fold for infants with Down syndrome in women younger than 35 years of age if the mother became pregnant while she was taking OCs. We did not observe this result for women older than 34 years of age. CONCLUSION Our results showed that the risk for Down syndrome in infants born to mothers with less than 35 years of age (as a group) who became pregnant while taking OCs is near the risk for Down syndrome of mothers with more than 34 years of age, women who are candidates for prenatal diagnosis. Thus, based on our results, one may consider the possibility of offering prenatal diagnosis for Down syndrome to young women who became pregnant while taking OCs.

Abstract
Exstrophy of the bladder (EB) and exstrophy of the cloaca (EC) are generally recognizable as distinct clinical entities. In patients with EB, the posterior bladder wall is exposed through a midline defect of the abdomen. The umbilicus is inferiorly displaced and located close to the superior margin of the exstrophic bladder. Genital abnormalities are common in boys and girls who may present epispadias and a small, split phallus or a split clitoris, a bifid uterus, and a duplicate or exstrophic vagina. In contrast to classic EB, EC is commonly associated with omphalocele, spinal defects, and incompletely formed external genitalia and is always associated with imperforate anus. Some authors state that EC and EB constitute two distinct disorders, but others consider them part of a "continuum," representing different levels of severity within the same spectrum. The use of the acronym OEIS to refer to the combination of omphalocele, exstrophy, imperforate anus, and spinal defects, in our opinion, has not helped to clarify the clinical definition, pathogenesis, or cause of this multiple congenital anomaly (MCA) pattern, mostly because the term makes no distinction between EC or EB. Here we present the epidemiological analysis of a group of characteristics in infants with EC and infants with EB to determine if they constitute two different entities. We also analyze if the different combinations of omphalocele, imperforate anus, and spinal defects are more frequent in infants with EC than in infants with MCA patterns other than EC and EB. The prevalence in our data for EC was 1:200,233 live births and 1:35,597 for EB. The clinical analysis indicated that the study defects (omphalocele, spine defects, spina bifida, and imperforate anus) tend to occur together in the same child with a higher frequency if the child has the EC defect than in infants with MCA patterns that did not include EC or EB. Our findings of low birth weight, twinning, single umbilical artery, and preferentially associated malformations suggest that EC is the result of damage occurring very early in development and that EC and EB are two different expressions of a primary polytopic developmental field defect.

Abstract
Haemoperitoneum secondary to haemorrhagic corpus luteum has been described in severe bleeding disorders such as afibrinogenaemia, type 3 von Willebrand's disease and patients under oral anticoagulation. We have studied one patient who presented three episodes of severe bleeding at ovulation, requiring surgery twice, with the diagnosis of mild von Willebrand's disease and mild storage pool deficiency. Mild von Willebrand's disease (associated with other thrombopathies or coagulopathies) should be considered in this pathology, although physicians would prefer to find a severe haemorrhagic disorder as the underlying condition in these cases.

Abstract
Hyperthermia is defined as a temperature of at least 1.5 degrees C over the normal core body temperature. It is a proven teratogen in animals and in humans. The type of defects induced by hyperthermia in experimental animals are: anencephaly/exencephaly, encephalocele, microphthalmia, arthrogryposis, abdominal wall defects, limb deficiencies, embryonic death, and resorption. In humans it has been observed that infants prenatally exposed to hyperthermia presented with spina bifida, encephalocele, microphthalmia, micrognathia, external ear anomalies, cardiac defects, hypospadias, gastrointestinal defects, cleft lip and/or cleft palate, abdominal wall defects, diaphragmatic hernia, Hirschsprung disease, Möbius syndrome, oromandibular-limb hypogenesis spectrum, and spontaneous abortions. We describe an additional case with severe limb deficiencies whose mother had fever over 39 degrees C for 2 days in the second and in the fourth month of amenorrhoea. We conclude that, based on the degree of development of the humeri and the femora and the type of limb deficiencies, this case presents a disruption that most probably occurred in the fourth month of gestation.

Abstract
In humans, unpaired organs are placed in a highly ordered pattern along the left-right axis. As indicated by animal studies, a cascade of signaling molecules establish left-right asymmetry in the developing embryo. Some of the same genes are involved also in limb patterning. To provide a better insight into the connection between these processes in humans, we analysed the symmetry of limb deficiencies among infants with multiple congenital anomalies. The study was based on data collected by the International Clearinghouse for Birth Defects Monitoring Systems (ICBDMS). Registries of the ICBDMS provided information on infants who, in addition to a limb deficiency, also had at least one major congenital anomaly in other organ systems. We reviewed 815 such cases of which 149 cases (18.3 %) were syndromic and 666 (81.7 %) were nonsyndromic. The comparisons were made within the associated limb deficiencies, considering the information on symmetry, using a comparison group with malformations associated not involved in the index association. Among the non-syndromic cases, the left-right distribution of limb deficiencies did not differ appreciably between limb deficiency subtypes (e.g., preaxial, transverse, longitudinal). The left-right distribution of limb anomalies did not differ among most types of non-limb anomalies, though a predominance of left-sided limb deficiencies was observed in the presence of severe genital defects - odds ratio [OR], 2.6; 95 % CI, 1.1-6.4). Limb deficiencies (LDs) were more often unilateral than bilateral when accompanied by gastroschisis (OR, 0.1) or axial skeletal defects (OR, 0.5). On the contrary, LDs were more often bilateral than unilateral when associated with cleft lip with or without cleft palate (OR, 3.9) or micrognathia (OR, 2.6). Specifically, we found an association between bilateral preaxial deficiencies and cleft lip, bilateral amelia with gastroschisis and urinary tract anomalies, and bilateral transverse deficiencies and gastroschisis and axial skeleton defects. Of 149 syndromic cases, 62 (41.6 %) were diagnosed as trisomy 18. Out of the 30 cases of trisomy 18 with known laterality, 20 cases were bilateral. In the remainder the right and left sides were equally affected. Also, in most cases (74.4 %) only the upper limbs were involved. In conclusion the left-right distribution of limb deficiencies among some non-limb anomalies may suggest a relationship between the development of the limb and the left-right axis of the embryo.

Abstract
Anal atresia (AA) is observed per se or as part of different Mendelian or chromosomal syndromes, and as part of the VACTERL primary developmental field, CHARGE association, cloacal extrophy, in a mitochondrial cytopathy, and other multiple congenital anomaly patterns. There are only a few studies on the defects associated with AA, and in all of them it was observed that genitourinary defects are most frequent in infants with AA. Here we present the analysis of 28,410 malformed infants to study the frequency of 11 selected congenital defects in infants with AA in relation to their frequency in infants with multiple congenital anomaly patterns without AA. We conclude that the association of AA + spine defects + renal/urinary tract defects + genital defects constitutes a group of defects that tends to be present together in the same child because they are pathogenetically related, and since they are of blastogenetic origin they constitute a primary polytopic developmental field defect.

Abstract
Stenosis, atresia, or absence of part of the duodenum, jejunum, or ileum are generally considered small intestinal atresias (SIAs). SIAs occur as isolated defects, in combination with other unrelated congenital anomalies, or as part of syndromes. We performed an epidemiological study of infants with isolated SIAs using data from two large congenital defects registries, one from Latin America (ECLAMC) and the other from Spain (ECEMC). The overall prevalence of SIAs is similar in both programs, being 1.32 per 10,000 livebirths in Spain and 1.29 per 10.000 livebirths in Latin America. Our results suggest that infants with isolated SIAs are characterized epidemiologically on the basis of shorter gestational age and low birthweight, an association with twinning, the parents are more frequently consanguineous, and their pregnancies are more frequently complicated by vaginal bleeding. The results also suggest an association between some maternal infections and ileal atresia. The fact that these characteristics have been observed in children with these types of anomalies occurring in different geographical areas and populations supports the conclusion that these characteristics are causally related to these defects.

Abstract
In 1994, we published a case with trisomy 13 who presented with ectrodactyly [Urioste et al., 1994: Am J Med Genet 53:390-392]. Recently, Kuschel and Gillessen-Kaesbach [2000: Am J Med Genet 90:87-88] presented an infant with trisomy 13 who also had oligodactyly, and they considered their case as the second published with oligodactyly. Here, we present three cases with any type of limb deficiencies who, together with the one that was published previously [Urioste et al., 1994], correspond to the total of 75 cases with trisomy 13 identified in the Spanish Collaborative Study of Congenital Malformations (ECEMC). This gives us a minimum frequency of 5.33% (CI:1.45-13.65) for trisomy 13 cases having limb deficiencies whereas these defects have a frequency of 5.51 per 10,000 births in our population. Consequently, we think that limb deficiencies could be considered as one of the defects that constitute the spectrum of anomalies observed in infants with trisomy 13.

Abstract
The detection and determination of s-triazines, atrazine-desethyl and aziprotryne by cyclic voltammetry and an amperometric method using a metallic copper electrode and a glassy carbon electrode are described. The concentrations of atrazine-desethyl and aziprotryne in 0.1 M NaOH solutions were determined using the oxidation signal corresponding to the Cu(0)/Cu(I) redox process. The detection level calculated for these s-triazines were 0.3 and 0.5 microg/mL of analyte, respectively. The glassy carbon electrode was shown to give sensitive reduction response to aziprotryne in flow injection mode. No special activation was required for the glassy carbon electrode. A detection limit of 0.2 microg/mL (20 ng aziprotryne) was obtained for a sample loop of 0.1 mL at a fixed potential of -1.0 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) in 0.1 M HCl and a flow rate of 3.5 mL/min. Furthermore, the glassy carbon electrode showed stable response in such a system, and the relative standard deviation was only 2.7% using the same surface, and 6.3% using different surfaces. The method developed was applied to the determination of aziprotryne in environmental and tap water samples; using a prior solid-phase extraction step, aziprotryne concentrations lower than 1.0 ng/mL could be measured.

Abstract
The presence of body wall defects with "evisceration" of thoracic and/or abdominal organs associated with other congenital anomalies, with or without limb deficiencies, is considered to be the body wall complex (BWC). The BWC is different from gastroschisis, which is usually a small body wall defect lateral to the umbilical cord that is not covered by any membrane and, in most of the cases, is an isolated defect. For the present analysis we separated the BWC group into three subgroups. One group was that of body stalk anomalies characterized by severe defects of the abdominal wall with absence of, or very small, umbilical cord, or this is continuing with the placenta. The second group was made up of those infants with body wall defects without amniotic bands, and the third group was of those children with body wall defects produced by amniotic bands. We considered two additional groups in the analysis, one was of infants with gastroschisis and the other those infants with amniotic bands without body wall affectation. We also included the control group (nonmalformed infants) for comparisons. From the results of our epidemiological study, we can conclude that amniotic bands with body wall affectation and amniotic bands without body wall defects are two different entities. The results also suggest that the characteristics of infants with amniotic bands with body wall defects are more similar to the group of infants with body stalk anomalies. This may indicate that the former group is produced during the very early gestation.

Abstract
As the evidence for an association between spina bifida and parental agricultural occupations is inconclusive, we evaluated this association and the potential associations between spina bifida and other parental occupations. Three register-based case-referent studies were conducted in Sweden, Spain, and Hungary. From the registries of congenital malformations in each country, 482, 478, and 1119 cases with spina bifida were identified, respectively. Identified as referents were 964, 434, and 1489 children without abnormalities. Information on parental occupation was available in the registries from questionnaires or interviews conducted among the parents. Occupations with a potential for physical or chemical exposure were compared to non-exposed occupations. Increased odds ratios (ORs) were observed for women in agricultural occupations in Sweden (OR: 1.8, 95% CI: 0.8-4.2) and in Spain (OR: 2.2, 95% CI: 0.8-5.9), but not in Hungary (OR: 1.1, 95% CI: 0.7-1.7). Several other parental occupations were analysed, but the associations with spina bifida were inconsistent. Concluding, the results are not totally consistent but point to an increased risk of spina bifida among women in agricultural occupations.

Abstract
The storage of conventional platelet concentrates (PCs) under standard blood bank conditions is limited to five days, in part because longer storage periods lead to increasing damage in platelet integrity and functionality. The growing demand of PCs for clinical use, raises the interest to develop agents that would potentially permit a more extended period of storage. We have evaluated and compared the in vitro quality of PCs treated with: (1) Modulators of levels of cAMP (PGE1, foskolin, theophylline and isobutyl-methyl-xanthine [IBMX]); and (2) organic anions that function as alternative substrates of platelets (pyruvate and acetate). Platelet rich plasma (PRP) from pools (n = 6) of PCs was distributed into storage bags, and the agents to be tested were added, using saline as a control substance. PCs were stored at 22 degrees C with continuous agitation for up to 10 days. At 0, 5 and 10 days of storage, samples were analyzed for platelet counts, mean platelet volume (MPV), metabolic markers, and expression of glycoproteins (GPs). The addition of modulators of levels of cAMP, at the concentration used in the study, did not lead to substantial improvement in the parameters being evaluated, with respect to those in control units. The supplementation with organic anions, while not affecting the surface levels of GPs, favored the maintenance of metabolic values, such as pH, PCO2, and bicarbonate concentrations, as well as the preservation of MPV (p values < 0.05 respect to control units both at 5 and 10 days of storage). Our results indicate that while the use of modulators of levels of cAMP do not provide substantial benefit in the prevention of platelet storage lesions, organic anions have some advantageous effect in the storage promoted metabolic changes of PCs. These data might be considered when designing strategies to improve PC storage.

Abstract
We studied a series of 27,145 consecutive infants with congenital defects and classified them into the currently recognized pathogenetic types of errors of morphogenesis, as defined by the International Working Group [Spranger et al., 1982: J Pediatrics 1:160-165]. Of all infants with congenital defects, 97.94% had malformations, 3.92% deformations, and 1.65% disruptions. Malformations associated with deformations were present in 3.12% of children with congenital anomalies, malformations with disruptions in 0.18%, deformations with disruptions in 0.07%, and malformations with deformations and disruptions in 0.14%. While deformations, including deformation sequences, were 2.38 times more common than disruptions and disruption sequences, isolated disruptions (1.27%) were more frequent than isolated deformations (0.59%). Knowledge of the frequencies of the different types of errors of morphogenesis (malformations, deformations, disruptions, developmental field defects, associations, complexes, unrecognized patterns of multiple congenital anomaly, and syndromes) may be of great value in the evaluation of patients with congenital anomalies.
