Abstract
Currently, a trend toward the commercialization of dromedary milk associated with recent intensive rearing systems has starting worldwide which impose constraints on animals affecting their behavioral repertoires and welfare status. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of dam parity and calf sex on parturition, neonatal, and maternal behaviors in stabled Maghrebi dairy camels (Camelus dromedarius). Thirty-six (primiparas N = 10; multiparas N = 26) periparturient females were kept under video surveillance using a digital IR camera and 24-h sessions were chosen to assess calving, maternal, and neonatal behaviors in calving pens. Duration of restlessness, process of giving birth, and expulsion of fetal membranes were assessed. After first suckling, dams and their calves were moved into an individual enclosure to assess maternal behavior at 12 h, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, and 7d postpartum. Behavior was assessed using a camcorder for 30 min after 1 h of young separation in an adjacent enclosure. Results showed an effect of parity on the duration of the birth process which was longer for primiparous than multiparous camels (P = 0.034). During this stage, primiparous females tended to raise their tails more often (P = 0.054) and spent more time standing (P = 0.001) than multiparous camels. Neonatal behavior was affected by calf sex. Female newborns took less time to raise their heads (P = 0.041) and to stand up (P = 0.048) for the first time and were the earliest to suckle their dams (P = 0.032). Multiparous dams stood up sooner (P = 0.019) after calving and suckled their calves earlier (P = 0.043) than primiparous dams. They emitted more bleats and exhibited more sniffing during the first week postpartum than primiparas. During the first postpartum week, both primiparas and multiparas showed a decrease in the total number of bleats (P < 0.001), low-pitch bleats (P < 0.001), and high-pitch bleats (P < 0.001), in sniffing frequency (P < 0.001) and sniffing duration (P < 0.001). This is the first study to describe in detail the calving, maternal, and neonatal behaviors of dromedary camels and to show the influence of parity and calf sex. Maternal care toward the newborn calf exhibited by a high level of bleating and sniffing activities in the first 2 days suggest that they play an important role in the establishment of mother-young relationship.

Abstract
The present study examined in lambs whether exposure to flavors derived from pregnant mother's diet and transferred to amniotic fluid (AF) could induce a preference for artificial milk containing one of these flavors. To test this hypothesis, cumin was added to the maternal diet in the last month of gestation. Preference for artificial milk containing p-cymene, one of the chemosensory compounds of cumin, was tested within the first two days after birth in maternally deprived lambs born from mothers fed a cumin-flavored diet (Cumin group), or an unflavored diet (Control group). Aromatic profile of AF from cumin-fed mothers was analyzed by GC-MS/MS to determine whether p-cymene could be detected. While the control group avoided the flavored artificial milk on day 1, the Cumin group did not and showed a preference for the cumin-scented formula on day 2. GC-MS/MS profile of AF revealed that four of the main volatile cumin compounds, p-cymene, p-cymenene, β-pinene and γ-terpinene were present in variable amounts in all samples, p-cymene being the most frequently detected. These findings indicate that newborn lambs can memorize flavors from the mother's diet present in AF and that prenatal experience influences their preference for an artificial milk containing one specific flavor.

Abstract
Although adult neurogenesis has been conserved in higher vertebrates such as primates and humans, timing of generation, migration, and differentiation of new neurons appears to differ from that in rodents. Sheep could represent an alternative model to studying neurogenesis in primates because they possess a brain as large as a macaque monkey and have a similar life span. By using a marker of cell division, bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU), in combination with several markers, the maturation time of newborn cells in the dentate gyrus (DG) and the main olfactory bulb (MOB) was determined in sheep. In addition, to establish the origin of adult-born neurons in the MOB, an adeno-associated virus that infects neural cells in the ovine brain was injected into the subventricular zone (SVZ). A migratory stream was indicated from the SVZ up to the MOB, consisting of neuroblasts that formed chain-like structures. Results also showed a long neuronal maturation time in both the DG and the MOB, similar to that in primates. The first new neurons were observed at 1 month in the DG and at 3 months in the MOB after BrdU injections. Thus, maturation of adult-born cells in both the DG and the MOB is much longer than that in rodents and resembles that in nonhuman primates. This study points out the importance of studying the features of adult neurogenesis in models other than rodents, especially for translational research for human cellular therapy.

[The general practitioner faced with memory problems in the aged patient in Luxembourg: a study of the management employed, the experience of the physicians and the perception of the specific treatment]. Abstract
Memory impairments are common in elderly. General practitioners are in first line to detect and manage these troubles, for which many countries published recommendations. For Alzheimer disease there are currently four treatments, none of which is healing. Some countries limited the first prescription of those medicines to specialists whereas in Luxembourg, every practitioner is allowed to prescribe them, but has to ask health insurance first. Consequently, it is important that general practitioners know what to do. The aim of our paper is to study the management done by the general practitioners in Luxembourg, the way they feel about it and the way they see the specific medicines for Alzheimer disease. Therefore, we have sent a questionnaire to every general practitioner in Luxembourg. We found that 87% of the practitioners realize at least one cognitive impairment test. More than half of them check for depression and 22.6% also add an autonomy assessment scale, even though all these tests are done by the dependence insurance. The involvement of general practitioners in the diagnosis of dementia is important as more than half of them have a statistically adequate number of demented patients. About two third of the practitioners do systematically start a specific medicine for Alzheimer disease. The management of cognitive impairment is difficult for general practitioners of Luxembourg, particularly the disclosure of diagnosis and management of behavioural and psychological symptoms.

Abstract
Profound behavioural changes occur in the mother at parturition, together with extensive remodelling of neural circuits. These changes include neurochemical, morphological and functional plasticity. The continuous generation of new neurones in the hippocampus and the olfactory system is an additional form of neuroplasticity that contributes to motherhood. This review describes the reciprocal relationships between hippocampal and olfactory neurogenesis and parental behaviour. Studies in rodents demonstrate that parturition and interactions with the young affect both cell proliferation and survival in a different manner across neurogenic zones. Species in which an individual recognition of the offspring is formed, such as sheep, show a down-regulation of neurogenesis during the perinatal period. This would function to decrease cell competition, favouring the selection of newborn neurones involved in olfactory recognition of the young. Also, in biparental species, increases in olfactory neurogenesis occur in the father in response to pup exposure during the early postpartum period. Oestradiol, corticosterone and prolactin changes associated with parturition are the main physiological factors involved in the regulation of neurogenesis that have been determined so far. In the father, prolactin mediates an enhancement of olfactory neurogenesis. Contradictory evidence indicates a functional link between neurogenesis and parenting behaviour. Mice receiving focal irradiation of the olfactory neurogenic subventricular zone show few disturbances in the expression of maternal behaviour, whereas a reduction of both hippocampal and olfactory neurogenesis as a result of the infusion of an anti-mitotic agent induces behavioural deficits. Disrupting prolactin signalling abolished increased paternal neurogenesis and offspring recognition by the father, and rescuing this neurogenesis restored recognition behaviour. More studies that selectively suppress the changes of neurogenesis are needed to confirm the role of new neurones in regulating parenting behaviour.

Abstract
The onset of maternal responsiveness and the development of mother-young attachment in sheep are under the combined influence of hormonal and sensory stimulations. In the mother, the prepartum rise in oestrogen and vaginocervical stimulation caused by expulsion of the foetus act on the main olfactory system and on hypothalamic regions. This induces maternal care through the central release of oxytocin, modulated by opiates and corticotrophin-releasing hormone. In parallel, activation of the main olfactory network enables the learning of individual lamb odour and maternal attachment. In the neonate, the first suckling episodes and the concomitant activation of the cholecystokinin, opioids and oxytocin systems facilitate the development of a preference for the mother. Gastrointestinal signals activate the brain stem, the hypothalamus and the amygdala. Within 72 h of parturition, the mother-young attachment shifts from proximal to distal recognition based on visual and auditory cues after which vocal cues become more salient. Although olfaction remains a key element in the display of selective maternal nursing, maternal attachment relies on a multisensory mental image of the lamb. These findings support the view that sheep are amongst the most appropriate animal models for the study of maternal and filial attachment in mammals.

Abstract
Ewes form a selective olfactory memory for their lambs after 2 hr of mother-young interaction following parturition. Mothers will subsequently reject any strange lamb at suckling. The present study investigated whether artificial vaginocervical stimulation (VCS) allows the formation of a selective bond with an unfamiliar lamb and whether it interferes with the maintenance of the bond formed with the familiar lamb. At 2 hr postpartum, mothers were separated from their familiar lamb after having formed a selective bond with it and were given 10 min of mechanical VCS. In the "VCS + lamb" group (n = 24) an unfamiliar lamb was left with the ewe for 2 hr whereas in the "VCS no lamb" group (n = 26) the mother was left alone for the same period of time. Ewes of the "no VCS" group (n = 14) did not receive any VCS. In the majority of animals of the "VCS + lamb" group (23/24) VCS induced a complete acceptance of the unfamiliar lamb without any disruption of the bond previously formed with the familiar lamb. VCS or 2 hr of separation did not disrupt the maintenance of the selective bond initially formed with the familiar lamb since all the ewes of the "VCS no lamb" and "no VCS" groups accepted it at suckling.

Abstract
AbstractThe electrical properties of titanium dioxide thin films have been stabilised by cerium doping. These films have a high permittivity between 35 to 45 and withstand 650°C. Multilayer TiO2:Ce/CeO2 insulators have been fabricated. The breakdown voltage is increased by a factor 10 with a modest decrease in the permittivity (30 – 35 instead of 35 – 45).Electroluminescent devices (ELDs) with a classical ZnS:Mn phosphor have been prepared using TiO2:Ce as the first insulator and a TiO2:Ce/CeO2 multilayer as the second insulator. Compared with a standard ELD based on Y2O3 insulators, devices with the new insulators show a significant decrease of the threshold voltage along with a notable increase of the brightness. An important increase is also achieved in the total device efficiency which is maintained over a large range of brightness and transferred charge. Consequences of rapid thermal annealing and conventional thermal treatments on device performance have also been investigated.

Abstract
Female rats with maternal experience display a shorter onset of maternal responsiveness compared to those with no prior experience. This phenomenon called 'maternal memory' is critically dependent on the nucleus accumbens (NA) shell. We hypothesized that activation of OT receptors in the NA shell facilitates maternal memory. In Experiment 1, postpartum female rats given 1 hour of maternal experience were infused following the experience with either a high or low dose of an OT antagonist into the NA shell and tested for maternal behavior after a 10-day pup isolation period. Females receiving a high dose of the antagonist showed a significantly longer latency to exhibit full maternal behavior after the pup isolation period compared to females that received vehicle or a high dose of antagonist in a control region. In Experiment 2, postpartum female rats were infused with either a high or low dose of OT into the NA shell after a 15-minute maternal experience and tested for maternal behavior after a 10-day pup isolation period. There were no significant differences between the females infused with OT and females treated with a vehicle infused into the NA shell or with OT infused into the control region. One possible reason for a lack of facilitation is a floor effect, since females in the control groups displayed a rapid maternal response after the pup isolation period. These findings suggest that OT receptors, likely in combination with other neurotransmitters, in the NA shell play a role in the consolidation of maternal memory.

Abstract
Production of new neurons continues throughout life in the subventricular zone (SVZ) and the dentate gyrus (DG) of the hippocampus and is influenced by both endocrine and social factors. In sheep parturition is associated with the establishment of a selective bond with the young based on an olfactory learning. The possibility exists that endocrine changes at parturition together with interactions with the young modulate cell proliferation in the neurogenic zones. In the present study, we first investigated the existence of cell proliferation in sheep. Newly born cells labeled by the cell proliferation marker 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) were found in the SVZ, the main olfactory bulb (MOB) and the DG and completely co-localized with Ki-67, another mitotic marker. Forty to 50% of the BrdU-labeled cells contained GFAP suggestive of the presence of neural stem cells. Secondly, parturition with or without interactions with the lamb for 2 days, down-regulated the number of BrdU-labeled cells in the 3 proliferation sites in comparison to no pregnancy. An additional control provided evidence that this effect is specific to early postpartum period: estrus with interactions with males did not affect cell proliferation. Our results provide the first characterization of neural cell proliferation in the SVZ, the DG and unexpectedly in the MOB of adult sheep. We hypothesize that the down-regulation of cell proliferation observed in the early postpartum period could facilitate the olfactory perceptual and memory demands associated with maternal behavior by favouring the survival and integration of neurons born earlier.

Abstract
The application of pressure to elemental bismuth reduces its conduction-valence band overlap, and results in a semimetal-semiconductor (SMSC) transition around 25 kbar. This transition is nominally of the topological "Lifshitz" Fermi surface variety, but there are open questions about the role of interactions at low charge densities. Using a novel pressure cell with optical access, we have performed an extensive study of bismuth's infrared conductivity under pressure. In contrast to the expected pure band behavior we find signatures of enhanced interaction effects, including strongly coupled charge-plasmon (plasmaron) features and a plasma frequency that remains finite up to the transition. These effect are inconsistent with a pure Lifshitz bandlike transition. We postulate that interactions play a central role in driving the transition.

Abstract
As ferromagnetism and superconductivity are usually considered to be antagonistic, the discovery of their coexistence in UGe(2), URhGe, UIr and UCoGe has attracted a lot of interest. The mechanism to explain such a state has, however, not yet been fully elucidated. In these compounds superconductivity may be unconventional: Cooper pairs could be formed by electrons with parallel spins and magnetic fluctuations might be involved in the pairing mechanism. URhGe becomes ferromagnetic below a Curie temperature of 9.5 K, with a spontaneous moment aligned to the c-axis. For temperatures below 260 mK and fields lower than 2 T, superconductivity was first observed in 2001. Recently, we discovered a second pocket of superconductivity. This new pocket of superconductivity appears at higher fields applied close to the b-axis, enveloping a sudden magnetic moment rotation transition at H(R) = 12 T. Detailed studies of the field induced metamagnetic transition and superconductivity are presented. The possibility that magnetic fluctuations emerging from a quantum critical point provide the pairing mechanism for superconductivity is discussed.

Abstract
Nursing-suckling interactions facilitate olfactory learning in newborns as long as suckling and the olfactory stimulus temporally overlap. We tested the hypothesis that olfactory preferences would develop even with a long delay between odor presentation and nursing. Thyme was presented to 2-day-old rabbit pups by placing an odorized plate 2 cm above their nest box. Duration and time of nursing were controlled and occurred before, during, or after odor presentation. Controls were not nursed. When exposed to the odor for 15 min, control pups preferred thyme to a novel odor in a 2-choice test immediately after exposure but not 3 and 22 h later. When pups were nursed immediately before thyme exposure or during exposure, they preferred the familiar odorant until 22 h later. Identically, when nursing occurred 30 min before odor exposure, a preference for thyme was maintained up to 22 h. This was not observed when nursing occurred 60 min before odor presentation. We concluded that enhancement of olfactory memory occurs in neonates during nursing but also after post-oral stimulation by postprandial internal state.

Abstract
We report on the collective integration technology of vertically aligned nanowires (NWs). Si and ZnO NWs have been used in order to develop a generic technological process. Both mineral and organic planarizations of the as-grown nanowires have been achieved. Chemical vapour deposition (CVD) oxides, spin on glass (SOG), and polymer have been investigated as filling materials. Polishing and/or etching of the composite structures have been set up so as to obtain a suitable morphology for the top and bottom electrical contacts. Electrical and optical characterizations of the integrated NWs have been performed. Contacts ohmicity has been demonstrated and specific contact resistances have been reported. The photoconducting properties of polymer-integrated ZnO NWs have also been investigated in the UV-visible range through collective electrical contacts. A small increase of the resistivity in the ZnO NWs under sub-bandgap illumination has been observed and discussed. A comparison of the photoluminescence (PL) spectra at 300 K of the as-grown and SOG-integrated ZnO nanowires has shown no significant impact of the integration process on the crystal quality of the NWs.

Abstract
We demonstrate high-performance nanowire superconducting single photon detectors (SSPDs) on bN thin films grown at a temperature compatible with monolithic integration. NbN films ranging from 150 nm to 3 nm in thickness were deposited by dc magnetron sputtering on MgO substrates at 400 degrees C SSPDs were fabricated on high quality NbN films of different thickness (7 to 3 nm) deposited under optimal conditions. Electrical and optical characterizations were performed on the SSPDs. The highest QE value measured at 4.2K is 20% at 1300 nm.

Abstract
The present study was designed to investigate the role of the medial preoptic area (MPOA) and the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) in the onset and maintenance of maternal behavior in sheep. In a first experiment, the MPOA or BNST were transiently inactivated during the first 2 h postpartum in primiparous ewes with the use of the anaesthetic lidocaine. MPOA inactivation greatly impaired the display of maternal behavior whereas inactivation of BNST or of adjacent sites (septum or diagonal band of Broca) or infusion of cerebrospinal fluid did not. In a separation/reunion lamb test (S/R) performed at 2 h postpartum, ewes with MPOA inactivation exhibited little reaction after separation of their lambs and did not show any motivation to reunite with them. Ewes with BNST inactivation showed intermediate performances in the S/R test. Moreover, in control ewes that were maternal for the first 2 h postpartum, MPOA or BNST inactivation performed in the following 12 h induced deficits in the S/R test, indicating that the MPOA and to a lesser extent BNST are also involved in the maintenance of maternal behavior. A second experiment showed that, in multiparous ewes, MPOA inactivation at parturition induced less deficit in the display of maternal behavior and in the S/R test than in primiparous mothers. These findings indicate that the MPOA and, to some extent, the BNST are functionally involved in the initiation and in the maintenance of maternal behavior in sheep, but this involvement is influenced by maternal experience.

Abstract
In sheep the onset of maternal responsiveness and the development of the mutual mother-young bond are under the combined influence of hormonal and visceral somatosensory stimulations. These stimuli are provided in the mother by parturition (via steroids and vaginocervical stimulation) and in the neonate by the first suckling episodes (via cholecystokinin and oro-gastro-intestinal stimulation). In addition, each partner relies on specific chemosensory stimulation for reciprocal attraction: amniotic fluids for the mother, colostrum for the young. In the ewe parturition activates several brain structures to respond specifically to sensory cues emanating from the young. The main olfactory bulbs undergo profound neurophysiological changes when exposed to offspring odors at parturition. Additional activations in the hypothalamus - preoptic area - and the amygdala - medial and cortical nuclei - also contribute to maternal responsiveness and memorization of lamb odors. In the neonate, post-ingestive stimulations activate the brain stem via vagal afferents. Like in the ewe, several regions of the hypothalamus and the amygdala respond to colostrum ingestion suggesting common ground for the integrative neural processes involved in early learning and bonding. This leads to rapid visual and auditory recognition in both partners although olfaction remains important in the ewe to display selective nursing. It is concluded that the biological basis for the development of maternal and filial bonding in sheep presents striking similarities.

Abstract
Although the local resistivity of semiconducting silicon in its standard crystalline form can be changed by many orders of magnitude by doping with elements, superconductivity has so far never been achieved. Hybrid devices combining silicon's semiconducting properties and superconductivity have therefore remained largely underdeveloped. Here we report that superconductivity can be induced when boron is locally introduced into silicon at concentrations above its equilibrium solubility. For sufficiently high boron doping (typically 100 p.p.m.) silicon becomes metallic. We find that at a higher boron concentration of several per cent, achieved by gas immersion laser doping, silicon becomes superconducting. Electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements show that boron-doped silicon (Si:B) made in this way is a superconductor below a transition temperature T(c) approximately 0.35 K, with a critical field of about 0.4 T. Ab initio calculations, corroborated by Raman measurements, strongly suggest that doping is substitutional. The calculated electron-phonon coupling strength is found to be consistent with a conventional phonon-mediated coupling mechanism. Our findings will facilitate the fabrication of new silicon-based superconducting nanostructures and mesoscopic devices with high-quality interfaces.

Abstract
This study investigates which forebrain structures show Fos protein expression during conditioned taste aversion (CTA) acquisition and whether Fos expression depends on the aversion strength. A novel taste paired with an intraperitoneal injection of a low dose of the malaise-inducing agent lithium chloride (LiCl) induced a weak CTA, whereas associating this novel taste with a high dose of LiCl induced a strong CTA. Increasing the strength of the gastric malaise alone enhanced Fos expression in central, basal, and lateral amygdala nuclei and decreased Fos expression in the nucleus accumbens core. Taste-malaise association induced specific Fos activation in the insular cortex (with both the low and the high doses of LiCl) and the nucleus accumbens shell (with the high LiCl dose only). No significant variation of Fos expression was measured in the perirhinal cortex. Several forebrain areas may be sites of taste-malaise convergence during CTA acquisition depending on the strength of the aversion.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to determine the influence of the mother in the development of flavored-food preference in lambs. First, we demonstrated that lambs that ate flavored food in the presence of their mothers before weaning ate more of this food 1 month after weaning than lambs that ate flavored food with other ewes or lambs exposed to nonflavored food with their mothers. Second, lambs that could only see their mothers eating the flavored food and had access to the food's olfactory cues before weaning, showed similar preference for flavored food 1 month after weaning to lambs that ate the flavored food with their mothers. However, lambs that were separated from their mothers while their mothers consumed flavored food did not reveal a preference for it. Overall these results suggest that development of food preference in lambs depends mainly on observation of the mother, provided there is also access to olfactory cues characterizing the food.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The treatment of heart failure (HF) due to left ventricular systolic dysfunction has been defined in recent guidelines, but these guidelines are not always applied in routine clinical practice. One of the objectives of the ETICS study was to evaluate medical treatment at discharge and after 1 year in patients hospitalised for a first episode of congestive HF due to left ventricular systolic dysfunction in 2000. METHODS One hundred and seventy nine patients (63% males, mean age of 69+/-13 years) with an ejection fraction < or = 40% were prospectively included. The main aetiology was ischaemic heart disease (44%). RESULTS The drugs prescribed at discharge and at one year, respectively, were loop diuretics in 95% and 91% of cases, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors in 82% and 75%, spironolactone in 35% and 37%, beta-blockers in 25% and 41%, digitalis glycosides in 34% and 30% of cases, and nitrates in 20% and 16% of cases. ACE inhibitors were prescribed at discharge and at 1 year at dosages reaching 64+/-29% and 72+/-30% of the recommended doses, respectively, and beta-blockers were prescribed at 26+/-16% and 35+/-25% of recommended doses, respectively. CONCLUSION Diuretics and ACE inhibitors are largely prescribed in HF due to left ventricular systolic dysfunction, followed by spironolactone. Beta-blockers are still underused both in terms of the rate of patients receiving them and the daily doses. These results highlight the value of continuing to widely circulate official practice guidelines in order to improve the management of HF due to left ventricular systolic dysfunction.

Abstract
In several metals, including URhGe, superconductivity has recently been observed to appear and coexist with ferromagnetism at temperatures well below that at which the ferromagnetic state forms. However, the material characteristics leading to such a state of coexistence have not yet been fully elucidated. We report that in URhGe there is a magnetic transition where the direction of the spin axis changes when a magnetic field of 12 tesla is applied parallel to the crystal b axis. We also report that a second pocket of superconductivity occurs at low temperature for a range of fields enveloping this magnetic transition, well above the field of 2 tesla at which superconductivity is first destroyed. Our findings strongly suggest that excitations in which the spins rotate stimulate superconductivity in the neighborhood of a quantum phase transition under high magnetic field.

Abstract
The most common cause of aortic stenosis is degenerative and progression of the disease is slow. Deciding to proceed to aortic valve replacement in an asymptomatic patient is always difficult. Only a minority will require valve replacement after repeated work-ups including stress testing and serial echographic examinations. In the future, stress echocardiography and BNP measurements may prove helpful in decision making.

Abstract
The influence of estrus, pregnancy, parturition, and maternal experience on the expression of estrogen receptor-alpha (ERalpha) was investigated in hypothalamic and limbic regions of the sheep brain, using immunocytochemistry. Four days before parturition, previous maternal experience was associated with a higher density of ERalpha-labeled neurons in the paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei, the medial preoptic area, and the medial amygdala, but not in the mediobasal hypothalamus. Furthermore, an interaction was found between physiological state and experience in the peripartum period as the effect of experience existing 4 days prepartum was not found at parturition, when densities were lowest both in primiparous and in multiparous ewes. An additional effect of physiological state was also observed between parturition and estrus, densities being significantly lower at parturition than at estrus in the SON, PVN, and MPOA, but not in the medial amygdala. These results indicate that in sheep ERalpha expression is influenced by previous physiological and/or maternal experience at specific times of the reproductive cycle. They are also congruent with the higher ability of multiparous than nulliparous ewes to show maternal behavior several days prepartum.

Abstract
In sheep, ewes at parturition are responsive to any newborn lamb, but within less than 1 h, mothers learn to recognize the odor of their lamb and restrict maternal care to their own offspring (maternal selectivity). In a first experiment, we investigated the long-term retention of maternal selectivity after various mother-young contact and separation durations. After 4 h of contact, 36 h of separation leads to a total loss of selectivity. Increasing contact duration to 7 days prior to this separation maintains selectivity. These data suggest that lamb memory after going through an initial labile state after parturition, is consolidated over time into a more stable long-term memory. Fos immunohistochemistry reveals that reintroduction of the lamb after 4 h of mother-young contact and 3 h of separation activates different maternal brain regions than reintroduction of the lamb after 7 days of mother-young contact and 3 h of separation. While the piriform cortex shows an enhanced activation at both times, a selective enhancement of activation is observed in the frontal medial and orbitofrontal cortices only after 7 days of mother-young contact. These data suggest that as consolidation occurs, the neurobiological networks sustaining lamb memory involve different structures.

Abstract
In mammals, olfactory cues are extensively used in many aspects of maternal care to ensure the coordination of mother-infant interactions and consequently the normal development of the offspring. Outside the period of parturition and lactation, when the young are not a behavioral priority, olfactory cues play an inhibitory role on maternal responsiveness since in most mammalian species studied so far, nonpregnant females find the odor of young aversive. On the contrary at the time of parturition, a shift in the hedonic value of infantile odors occurs so that the young now become a very potent stimulus and this sensorial processing constitutes an important part of the maternal motivational system. Moreover, infants' odors provide a basis for individual recognition by their mothers and some species (ungulates) have developed highly specialized mechanisms for processing of the infant signals. Perception of the smell of the young also regulates various aspects of maternal behavior. Dodecyl propionate, a compound released by of pup's preputial glands, has been shown to influence anogenital licking behavior, a fundamental pattern of maternal behavior in rodents. While there is no functional specificity of either the main or the accessory olfactory systems in the development of maternal behavior amongst species, it appears that only the main olfactory system is implicated when individual odor discrimination of the young is required. Neural structures, such as the main olfactory bulb, undergo profound changes when exposed to offspring odors at parturition. These changes in synaptic circuitry contribute both to maternal responsiveness to these odors, to their memorization, and to effects of long-term maternal experience.

Abstract
The effects of maternal deprivation on learning of social and spatial tasks were investigated in female adult rats. Pups were reared artificially and received "lickinglike" tactile stimulation (AR animals) or were reared with their mothers (MR animals). In adulthood, subjects were tested on paradigms of spatial learning and on paradigms involving learning of social cues. Results showed that maternal deprivation did not affect performance on spatial learning, but it did impair performance on the three social learning tasks. The AR animals made no distinction between a new and a previously presented juvenile conspecific. AR animals also responded less rapidly than MR animals at test for maternal behavior 2 weeks after a postpartum experience with pups. Finally, AR animals did not develop a preference for a food previously eaten by a familiar conspecific whereas MR animals did. This study indicates that animals reared without mother and siblings show no deficits in spatial tasks while showing consistent deficits in learning involving social interactions.

Abstract
Patients affected by aortic stenosis with severe systolic left ventricular dysfunction have a poor spontaneous prognosis. The results of valvular replacement are globally good, at the price of an acceptable operative mortality. The existence of surgical failure has however prompted much work aimed at better definition of prognostic factors and for proposing new methods of specifying surgical indications. In this article based on a review of the literature, we discuss the physiopathology of left ventricular dysfunction, predictive factors for operative risk and survival, and the elements to be taken into account in order to adjust therapeutic decisions in these severe cases.

Abstract
Lambs can discriminate their own mother from an alien dam on the first day of life, suggesting the recognition of individual physical characteristics of the mother. Alternatively, their choice may depend on behavioral differences existing between the ewes because of their maternal selectivity. To clarify this, the ability of 24-hr-old lambs to discriminate between their own and an alien mother, that were either intact and accept only their own lamb at nursing (i.e., selective, n = 19) or anosmic, which nurse indiscriminately alien lambs as well as their own (i.e., nonselective, n = 24), was assessed by a 5-min, two-choice test. With intact dams, lambs spent significantly more time next to their own mother whereas this was not so in the presence of anosmic dams. Furthermore, in the intact group, the vocal activity by their own mother differed from that by the alien dam while this was not so in anosmic ewes. We conclude that 24-hr-old lambs rely more on the behavior of the ewes to select their dam than on their individual physical characteristics.

Abstract
The involvement of the basal forebrain cholinergic system has been extensively investigated in instrumental learning but little is known of its participation in social memory, especially in the memorization of individual traits of a conspecific. The present study tested in sheep its contribution to both instrumental learning and individual offspring recognition. Six weeks before parturition, ewes received injections of a specific cholinergic immunotoxin (ME20.4 IgG-saporin) into the lateral ventricles (150 microg) and in some cases additional immunotoxin injections into the nucleus basalis (11 microg/side). After 3 weeks of recovery, ewes were trained on a classical instrumental visual discrimination task known to be sensitive to cholinergic deficits. The formation of memory of offspring was assessed through both olfactory and visual/auditory recognition tasks. Olfactory recognition was tested by presenting at suckling successively an alien and the familiar lamb at 2 and 4 h after parturition. Visual/auditory recognition of the lamb was performed using a non-olfactory discrimination test between the familiar and an alien lamb after 12 h of mother-young contact. The lesion extent was assessed by counting choline acetyltransferase-immunopositive neurons in the basal forebrain and measuring the density of acetylcholinesterase fibers in different target areas. Results showed that immunotoxic lesions delayed acquisition of the instrumental visual discrimination. Moreover, olfactory recognition of the lamb was severely impaired while visual/auditory lamb recognition was marginally altered. There was no evidence for sensorimotor or motivational deficits. Importantly, impairment was observed in animals for which loss of basal forebrain cholinergic neurons and their efferent fibers was higher than 75%, while striatal cholinergic neurons and Purkinje cells were unaffected. This study provides evidence that the basal forebrain cholinergic system contributes not only to instrumental but also to social learning. In addition, the cholinergic modulation seems of importance for processing visual and olfactory modalities. However, since only extensive lesions affect performance, this indicates that the basal forebrain cholinergic system possesses substantial reserve capacity to sustain cognitive functions.

Abstract
Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein complex responsible for the maintenance of the length of the telomeres during cell division, which is active in germ-line cells as well as in the vast majority of tumors but not in most normal tissues. The wide expression of the human telomerase catalytic subunit (hTERT) in tumors makes it an interesting candidate vaccine for cancer. hTERT-derived peptide 540-548 (hTERT(540)) has been recently shown to be recognized in an HLA-A*0201-restricted fashion by T cell lines derived from peptide-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from healthy donors. As a first step to the inclusion of this peptide in immunotherapy clinical trials, it is crucial to assess hTERT(540)-specific T cell reactivity in cancer patients as well as the ability of hTERT-specific CD8(+) T lymphocytes to recognize and lyse hTERT-expressing target cells. Here, we have analyzed the CD8(+) T cell response to peptide hTERT(540) in HLA-A*0201 melanoma patients by using fluorescent HLA-A*0201/hTERT(540) peptide tetramers. HLA-A*0201/hTERT(540) tetramer(+) CD8(+) T cells were readily detected in peptide-stimulated PBMC from a significant proportion of patients and could be isolated by tetramer-guided cell sorting. hTERT(540)-specific CD8(+) T cells were able to specifically recognize HLA-A*0201 cells either pulsed with peptide or transiently transfected with a minigene encoding the minimal epitope. In contrast, they failed to recognize hTERT-expressing HLA-A*0201(+) target cells. Furthermore, in vitro proteasome digestion studies revealed inadequate hTERT processing. Altogether, these results raise questions on the use of hTERT(540) peptide for cancer immunotherapy.

As a first step to the inclusion of this peptide in immunotherapy clinical trials, it is crucial to assess hTERT(540)-specific T cell reactivity in cancer patients as well as the ability of hTERT-specific CD8(+) T lymphocytes to recognize and lyse hTERT-expressing target cells. Here, we have analyzed the CD8(+) T cell response to peptide hTERT(540) in HLA-A*0201 melanoma patients by using fluorescent HLA-A*0201/hTERT(540) peptide tetramers. HLA-A*0201/hTERT(540) tetramer(+) CD8(+) T cells were readily detected in peptide-stimulated PBMC from a significant proportion of patients and could be isolated by tetramer-guided cell sorting. hTERT(540)-specific CD8(+) T cells were able to specifically recognize HLA-A*0201 cells either pulsed with peptide or transiently transfected with a minigene encoding the minimal epitope. In contrast, they failed to recognize hTERT-expressing HLA-A*0201(+) target cells. Furthermore, in vitro proteasome digestion studies revealed inadequate hTERT processing. Altogether, these results raise questions on the use of hTERT(540) peptide for cancer immunotherapy.

Abstract
The basal forebrain cholinergic system is involved in different forms of memory. To study its role in social memory in sheep, an immunotoxin, ME20.4 immunoglobulin G (IgG)-saporin, was developed that is specific to basal forebrain cholinergic neurons bearing the p75 neurotrophin receptor. The distribution of sheep cholinergic neurons was mapped with an antibody against choline acetyltransferase. To assess the localization of the p75 receptor on basal forebrain cholinergic neurons, the distribution of p75 receptor-immunoreactive neurons with ME20.4 IgG was examined, and a double-labeling study with antibodies against choline acetyltransferase and p75 receptor was undertaken. The loss of basal forebrain cholinergic neurons and acetylcholinesterase fibers in basal forebrain projection areas was assessed in ewes that had received intracerebroventricular injections of the immunotoxin (50, 100 or 150 microg) alone, as well as, in some of the ewes treated with the highest dose, with bilateral immunotoxin injections in the nucleus basalis (11 microg/side). Results indicated that choline acetyltransferase- and p75 receptor-immunoreactive cells had similar distributions in the medial septum, the vertical and horizontal limbs of the band of Broca, and the nucleus basalis. The double-labeling procedure revealed that 100% of the cholinergic neurons are also p75 receptor positive in the medial septum and in the vertical and horizontal limbs of the band of Broca, and 82% in the nucleus basalis. Moreover, 100% of the p75 receptor-immunoreactive cells of these four nuclei were cholinergic. Combined immunotoxin injections into ventricles and the nucleus basalis produced a near complete loss (80-95%) of basal forebrain cholinergic neurons and acetylcholinesterase-positive fibers in the hippocampus, olfactory bulb and entorhinal cortex. This study provides the first anatomical data concerning the basal forebrain cholinergic system in ungulates. The availability of a selective cholinergic immunotoxin effective in sheep provides a new tool to probe the involvement of basal forebrain cholinergic neurons in cognitive processes in this species.

Abstract
Genetic improvement in sows' prolificity is limited by their milk capacities, which do not allow all piglets to survive or grow normally. This experiment compared the behaviour, growth and immune responses of piglets that were weaned early at 6 days of age (EW) vs. control Large White piglets' (C) suckled by their mothers. Behaviour of 9 litters of 5 to 8 piglets in each group were observed from d5 to d20. All piglets were weighed from birth to d74. Three piglets from each group were slaughtered on d36 for immunological analysis. Until they began to eat dry food, EW piglets walked and vocalised more than C piglets. After that time, when resting, they were less often lying down and more frequently in contact with littermates under the heater. Aggressive behaviour and belly-nosing were more frequent. They displayed a more marked growth check after weaning than did C piglets until 28 days of age. In EW piglets, at 36 days of age, there was a higher density of T- and B-lymphocytes in the gut epithelium and lamina propria, fespectively, in relation to the size of lymphoid follicles of Peyer's patches. The results indicate great behavioural adaptation capacities of very early-weaned piglets, together with earlier maturation of their gut immune system.

Abstract
Recombinant human interferon gamma (r-hu-IFNgamma) exerts both antitumoral activity in the early stages of human malignant mesothelioma and a cytostatic effect in human mesothelioma (HM) cell lines in vitro. The antiproliferative effect of interferons (IFNs) reported in a variety of cells has been attributed to several mechanisms. In order to progress in the understanding of HM cell growth modulation by r-hu-IFNgamma, modifications of cell cycle progression and expression of key cell cycle regulator proteins in response to r-hu-IFNgamma were examined. Nine HM cell lines were studied, including one resistant to the antiproliferative effect of r-hu-IFNgamma. Except in the resistant cell line r-hu-IFNgamma produced an arrest in the G1 and G2-M phases of the cell cycle, associated with a reduction in both cyclin A and cyclin dependent kinase inhibitors (CDKIs) expression. Moreover cyclin B1/cdc2 activity was decreased. The present study provides the first evidence of a G2-arrest in r-hu-IFNgamma-treated HM cell lines and indicates that HM cell lines, despite their tumorigenic origin still support cell cycle control. The cell cycle arrest induced by r-hu-IFNgamma seems to depend on cyclin regulation through p21(WAF1/CIP1)- and p27(Kip1)-independent mechanisms and is not directly related to the induced DNA damage.

Abstract
An experiment was conducted to investigate the consequences of very early weaning of piglets on neuroendocrine variables and growth. Sixty piglets from eight litters were either weaned on Postnatal Day 6 (early weaning, or EW piglets) or left with their dam until normal weaning at Day 28 (control piglets, or C). At Days 5, 7, 11, 14, and 19, urine was collected between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. for the measurement of catecholamines, glucocorticoids, and creatinine. Compared with C, EW piglets displayed a transient increase in urinary cortisol on the day following separation from their dam (Day 7) (P<.05). Urinary norepinephrine (NE) was three times lower in EW compared to C piglets from Day 7 until Day 14 (P<.01) but there was no difference between the two groups on Day 19. Urinary epinephrine (EPI) did not differ between C and EW piglets on the day after weaning. Thereafter, EW piglets displayed a three times drop in urinary EPI as compared to C piglets until the end of the period (P<.01). Weaning induced an immediate reduction in food intake and growth rate and at Day 28, the body weight of EW piglets was 1.60 kg lower than that of C piglets (P<.0001). In conclusion, weaning of 6-day-old piglets results in a marked and prolonged suppression of the release of catecholamines. This result likely reflects physiological responses to insufficient energy intake after weaning, as reflected also by changes in thermoregulatory behavior. The transient increase in cortisol excretion in weanlings may be caused by both emotional distress and acute food deprivation.

Abstract
The assembly of individual mammalian proteasome subunits into catalytically active 20S proteasome is not well understood. Herein, we report the identification and characterization of human and mouse homologues of the yeast proteasome maturating factor Ump1p. We delineate the region of hUMP1 implicated in the specific interaction with proteasome precursors and show that hUMP1 protein is absent from the mature form of the 20S proteasome. We also show that the transcript level of mammalian UMP1 is increased after IFN-gamma treatment and that mammalian UMP1 is functionally related to but not interchangeable with its yeast homologue.

Abstract
The defining characteristic of mammals is that females nurse and care for their young; without this, the neonate has no chance to survive. Studies on wild and domestic species show that the neonatal period is the most critical step in the lifetime of a mammal. This review compares three well-studied species (the rabbit, pig and sheep) that differ in their parental strategies and in the problems that neonates have to overcome. As a general trend, mother-young interactions vary according to the maturity of the newborn, and the size of the litter. Neonatal survival relies to a great extent on an environment that is ecologically appropriate for the developmental stage of the neonate, and on optimum interactions with the mother. Adaptive maternal care supposes that the mother provides the basic needs of the neonate: warmth (in pigs and rabbits) or shelter, food, water and immunological protection (via colostrum) and, in some instances, protection from predators and other conspecifics. A major risk facing all neonates, other than the birth process itself, is inadequate colostrum intake owing to delayed suckling or competition with siblings, which leads to starvation, hypothermia or even crushing, as has been observed in pigs.

Abstract
The proteasome plays a crucial role in the proteolytic processing of antigens presented to T cells in the context of major histocompatibility complex class I molecules. However, the rules governing the specificity of cleavage sites are still largely unknown. We have previously shown that a cytolytic T lymphocyte-defined antigenic peptide derived from the MAGE-3 tumor-associated antigen (MAGE-3(271-279), FLWGPRALV in one-letter code) is not presented at the surface of melanoma cell lines expressing the MAGE-3 protein. By using purified proteasome and MAGE-3(271-279) peptides extended at the C terminus by 6 amino acids, we identified predominant cleavages after residues 278 and 280 but no detectable cleavage after residue Val(279), the C terminus of the antigenic peptide. In the present study, we have investigated the influence of Pro(275), Leu(278), and Glu(280) on the proteasomal digestion of MAGE-3(271-285) substituted at these positions. We show that positions 278 and 280 are major proteasomal cleavage sites because they tolerate most amino acid substitutions. In contrast, the peptide bond after Val(279) is a minor cleavage site, influenced by both distal and proximal amino acid residues.

Abstract
In this study, a computer-assisted reverse immunology approach was utilized in order to identify potentially antigenic peptides derived from the differentiation antigen TRP-2, a melanosomal protein frequently expressed in melanoma. Among the seven peptides complying with HLA-A2.1-binding motifs, two induced specific CD8(+) cytotoxic T lymphocytes. HLA-A2.1(+) melanoma cells expressing TRP-2 were lysed by clones specific for TRP-2(360-368) (TLDSQVMSL) peptide, thus identifying it as a naturally processed epitope. Other T-cell clones directed against TRP-2(476-484) (VMGTLVALV) were unable to lyse HLA-matched TRP-2(+) cell lines. The role of intracellular proteolytic processing in the generation of this epitope was investigated by transfecting mini-genes encoding the TRP-2(476-484) peptide alone or carrying N- or C-terminal extensions. Specific T-cell clones recognized target cells expressing the cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL)-defined epitope or its C-terminally extended precursor, but failed to recognize cells expressing the N-terminally extended TRP-2(476-484) peptide, suggesting the presence of a negative processing signal (NPS). Regarding C-terminus-flanking regions, mutational analysis indicates that the GLY485 residue plays a key role in the processing of the TRP-2(476-484) epitope. Interestingly, proteasome inhibitors preventing the generation of the MART-1/Melan-A(27-35) immunodominant melanoma tumor-associated antigen (TAA) promoted detectable presentation of TRP-2(476-484) epitope in HLA-A2.1(+) and TRP-2(+) tumor lines, as witnessed by cytokine release by specific T-cell clones.
