Abstract
BACKGROUND An adequate forecasting model of mortality that allows an analysis of different population changes is a topic of interest for countries in demographic transition. Phenomena such as the reduction of mortality, ageing, and the increase in life expectancy are extremely useful in the planning of public policies that seek to promote the economic and social development of countries. To our knowledge, this paper is one of the first to evaluate the performance of mortality forecasting models applied to abridged life tables. OBJECTIVE Select a mortality model that best describes and forecasts the characteristics of mortality in Colombia when only abridged life tables are available. DATA AND METHOD We used Colombian abridged life tables for the period 1973-2005 with data from the Latin American Human Mortality Database. Different mortality models to deal with modeling and forecasting probability of death are presented in this study. For the comparison of mortality models, two criteria were analyzed: graphical residuals analysis and the hold-out method to evaluate the predictive performance of the models, applying different goodness of fit measures. RESULTS Only three models did not have convergence problems: Lee-Carter (LC), Lee-Carter with two terms (LC2), and Age-Period-Cohort (APC) models. All models fit better for women, the improvement of LC2 on LC is mostly for central ages for men, and the APC model's fit is worse than the other two. The analysis of the standardized deviance residuals allows us to deduce that the models that reasonably fit the Colombian mortality data are LC and LC2. The major residuals correspond to children's ages and later ages for both sexes. CONCLUSION The LC and LC2 models present better goodness of fit, identifying the principal characteristics of mortality for Colombia.Mortality forecasting from abridged life tables by sex has clear added value for studying differences between developing countries and convergence/divergence of demographic changes.

Abstract
The seeds of Plukenetia polyadenia have high levels of unsaturated fatty acids and are used as medicine and food for native people in the Peruvian and Brazilian Amazon. The objective of this study was to develop a method for vegetative propagation of Plukenetia polyadenia by rooting of cuttings. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with 12 treatments and 3 replications of 8 cuttings, in a 3 × 4 factorial arrangement. The factors were: 3 levels of leaf area (25, 50 and 75%) and 3 indole-3-butyric acid - IBA concentrations (9.84, 19.68 and 29.52mM) and a control without IBA. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and means were compared by Tukey test at 5% probability. Our results show that the use of cuttings with 50% of leaf area and treatment with 29.52mM of IBA induced high percentages of rooting (93%) and the best root formation. Vegetative propagation of Plukenetia polyadenia by cuttings will be used as a tool to conserve and propagate germplasm in breeding programs.

Abstract
We report a case of primary renal allograft dysfunction and early acute cell-mediated rejection after a 12/12 HLA antigen zero-mismatch (0MM) transplant. The recipient was a 40-year-old white man who was highly allosensitized, with a calculated panel reactive antibody score of 100%. In posteroperative day 1 the recipient remained anuric and underwent dialysis because of hyperkalemia. Graft biopsy showed early acute cellular rejection, Banff grade 2B. No evidence of antibody-mediated rejection was observed. To our knowledge, this case is the 1st to report early cell-mediated rejection after 12/12 HLA antigen 0MM kidney transplantation. This case suggests that highly sensitized candidates are at high immunologic risk even in the context of 0MM kidney transplantation.

Abstract
Honey bees [Apis mellifera L. (Apidae, Hymenoptera)] show spatial learning behavior or orientation, in which animals make use of structured home ranges for their daily activities. Worker (female) orientation has been studied more extensively than drone (male) orientation. Given the extensive and large flight range of drones as part of their reproductive biology, the study of drone orientation may provide new insight on landscape features important for orientation. We report the return rate and orientation of drones released at three distances (1, 2, and 4 km) and at the four cardinal points from an apiary located in Gurabo, Puerto Rico. We used high-resolution aerial photographs to describe landscape characteristics at the releasing sites and at the apiary. Analyses of variance were used to test significance among returning times from different distances and directions. A principal components analysis was used to describe the landscape at the releasing sites and generalized linear models were used to identify landscape characteristics that influenced the returning times of drones. Our results showed for the first time that drones are able to return from as far as 4 km from the colony. Distance to drone congregation area, orientation, and tree lines were the most important landscape characteristics influencing drone return rate. We discuss the role of landscape in drone orientation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The endogenous cannabinoid system plays a role in metabolic aspects of body weight and feeding behaviour. A polymorphism (1359 G/A) (rs1049353) of the CB1 gene was reported as a common polymorphism in the Caucasian population. The present study aimed to investigate the association of the polymorphism (G1359A) of the CB1 receptor gene on macronutrient intake in females with obesity. METHODS A sample of 896 females was analysed. A bioimpedance measurement, a blood pressure measurement, a serial assessment of nutritional intake with 3 days of written food records, and a biochemical analysis were all performed. The genotype of the CNR1 receptor gene polymorphism (rs1049353) was studied. RESULTS Five hundred and sixteen patients (57.6%) had the genotype G1359G (non-A carriers) and 380 (42.4%) patients had G1359A (328 patients, 36.6%) or A1359A (52 patients, 5.8%) (A carriers). Triglycerides and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels were higher in A non-A allele carriers than non-A allele carriers. The intakes of dietary cholesterol and saturated fat for the upper tertile (T3) compared to the baseline tertile were inversely associated with the CB1-R 1359 G/A polymorphism [odds ratio (OR) = 0.59; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.30-0.92 and OR = 0.66; 95% CI = 0.39-0.91, respectively]. These data were observed in the second tertile (T2) (OR = 0.61; 95% CI = 0.29-0.94 and OR = 0.58; 95% CI = 0.31-0.90, respectively). CONCLUSIONS The present study reports an association of the A allele with a better lipid profile (triglycerides and HDL cholesterol) than non-A allele carriers. In addition, this polymorphism is associated with a specific macronutrient intake, as well as with low cholesterol and fat saturated intakes.

Abstract
Decompressive craniectomy (DC) is a surgical practice that has been used since the late 19th century. The cerebral blood flow increase after the performance of a DC can delay and even prevent the development of cerebral circulatory arrest and brain death (BD). We aimed to determine the prevalence of BD, the use of DC, and the evolution to BD with versus without DC. This retrospective, observational, cross-sectional study was performed in a single high-intensity center in Argentina from January 2003 to December 2010. Inclusion criteria were all patients with Glasgow Coma Score of at most 7 on admission or during their stay in the intensive care units. Exclusion criteria were patients with incomplete data. In cases of death, we assessed whether they fulfilled BD criteria or if the cause of death was a cardiac arrest (CA). The 698 patients considered for analysis showed a 60% (n = 418) global mortality rate. The causes were: CA (n = 270); BD (n = 108) and others considered to be "undefined," namely not assessed completely for the diagnosis of BD (n = 40). According to diagnosis category, traumatic brain injury (TBI) was largest (nearly 50%). The DC group (n = 206) showed significant differences regarding sex and diagnosis category versus no DC group. Mortality was significantly lower in this group (48% versus 65%, P < .001). No significant differences were observed comparing causes of death (CA, BD, or undefined). The use of DC did not influence the frequency of BD development (24% versus 26%, P = .72). The average DC rate was 30% and of BD 16%. The prevalence of DC and better survival were recorded compared with subjects without DC. The prevalence of BD was lower than expected in accordance with national registries; however, among our group, DC did not seem to modify the evolution to BD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Protein C is a natural thrombin antagonist produced by hepatocytes. Its levels are low in liver failure and predispose patients to increased risk for thrombosis. Little is known about the relationship between protein C activity and hepatic function after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). METHODS We measured protein C activity of 41 patients undergoing liver transplantation by the Staclot method (normal range, 70%-130%) preoperatively and then daily on postoperative days (POD) 0-5. RESULTS The mean protein C activity was low before OLT (34.3 ± 4.3%) and inversely correlated with the preoperative Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score (Spearman's r = -0.643; P < .0001). Mean activity increased significantly on POD 1 (58.9 ± 4.5%), and remained above preoperative levels through POD 5. Ten patients developed metabolic liver dysfunction defined by a serum total bilirubin >5 mg/dL on POD 7. These patients had significantly lower protein C activity from POD 3 (47.2 ± 9.6% vs 75.9 ± 5.8%; P = .01) to POD 5. Preoperative protein C activity correlated inversely with the severity of liver failure as indicated by preoperative MELD score. CONCLUSION Protein C activity recovered rapidly in patients with good allograft function but remained significantly lower in patients who had limited metabolic function as evidenced by increased total bilirubin levels.

Abstract
Arginine amino acid (Arg) has been vibrationally studied through its infrared, Raman and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra, and theoretical calculations. Net charge is used to predict the possibility to obtain the SERS spectrum of Arg in colloidal solution. The interpretation of the SERS spectral data suggests that the Arg-Ag nanoparticles interaction in a colloidal solution and in the case of the Arg coated by Ag is mainly verified through the guanidinium moiety. Theoretical calculations performed by using extended Hückel theory method for a model of Arg interacting with an Ag cluster support the observed SERS experimental result.

Abstract
A method has been developed for the simultaneous analysis of 22 mycotoxins in wheat, barley, oats, rye and maize grain. Analysis is carried out with liquid chromatography-electrospray ionisation tandem mass spectrometry. The compounds included in this analysis are aflatoxins, sterigmatocystin, cyclopiazonic acid, tricothecenes, ochratoxin A, fumonisins, zearalonone, and ergot alkaloids. Sample extraction (2 g) with acetonitrile:water (8 ml, 80:20) was carried out for 2 min using a commercial sample preparation apparatus (Stomacher®). The extract was then centrifuged, filtered and analysed. Extraction of fumonisins from maize (2 g) was optimised by first extracting the maize with acetonitrile: water (5 ml, 80:20) followed by the addition of water (3 ml), which permitted extraction of the 22 mycotoxins, including the fumonisins. Chromatography was carried out with a minicolumn (7.5×2.1 mm, 5 µm) (5 µl sample injection) and in 11 min, including column reconditioning. Analysis was carried out with 2 MRM transitions for the precursor ions. All method detection limits were below current maximum Canadian residue limits. Matrix effects for each compound in each of the 5 matrices were estimated and ranged from 70 to 149%, but most were 100±10%. Accuracy, repeatability and ruggedness were established. Proficiency samples from FERA (Food and Environment Research Agency, Sand Hutton, York, UK) were tested and are reported. Finally, 100 field samples of the various grains were tested with this method and are reported with the observation of numerous mycotoxins in all matrices, including ergotamine in winter wheat.

Abstract
Cyclopiazonic acid (CPA) is an important mycotoxin given its toxicity and prevalence in foods and feeds. There is tremendous interest in developing analytical methods that include CPA as part of a multi-residue mycotoxin routine, but there appears to be considerable difficulty in analysing it using liquid chromatography with electrospray ionisation tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). During the development of a multi-residue method for mycotoxins including CPA, a number of issues were discovered under routine and common analytical conditions that have an impact on the determination of CPA, including: (1) at the ng/ml level CPA reacts with ambient oxygen from the headspace of the vial, an effect that decreases its concentration linearly; (2) CPA readily adsorbs to plastic in a reversible fashion; (3) CPA is acid hydrolysed with formic acid; (4) CPA reacts with the column stationary phase affecting chromatographic parameters; and (5) CPA presents significant carry-over issues. In an effort to find solutions to these problems we found that CPA can be protected from reacting with oxygen by adding 1 µg/ml ascorbic acid and that its carry-over can be reduced to a negligible level by injecting ammonia between injections of solutions containing CPA, even with formic acid in the mobile phase. Chromatographic conditions for CPA have been optimised in consideration of all of the aforementioned concerns.

Abstract
A total of 57 samples of feedstuffs commonly used for animal nutrition in Colombia (maize, soybean, sorghum, cottonseed meal, sunflower seed meal, wheat middlings and rice) were analysed for Aspergillus contamination. Aspergillus fungi were identified at species level and their ability to produce aflatoxins was determined by highperformance liquid chromatography. A total of 31 of the feedstuffs analysed (54.4%) were found to contain Aspergillus spp. The most contaminated substrate was maize (100%) followed by cottonseed meal (80%), sorghum (60%) and wheat middlings (60%). Soybean showed lower levels of contamination (10%). No Aspergillus spp. could be isolated from rice or sunflower seed meal. Total Aspergillus strains isolated were 50, with 28 belonging to section Flavi (56%), 17 to section Nigri (34%), 4 to section Circumdati (8%) and 1 to section Fumigati (2%). Among section Flavi, 17 isolates were identified as A. flavus, seven as A. parasiticus, two as A. oryzae and two as A. tamarii. Production of aflatoxins by Aspergillus section Flavi was screened by liquid chromatography. About three quarters of the A. flavus strains (76.5%) produced aflatoxin B1 (0.2 to 240.4 µg/g) and aflatoxin B2 (0.2 to 1.6 µg/g), while all A. parasiticus strains produced the four naturally occurring aflatoxins (aflatoxin B1 from 0.6 to 83.5 µg/g, aflatoxin B2 from 0.3 to 4.8 µg/g, aflatoxin G1 from 0.4 to 19.3 µg/g and aflatoxin G2 from 0.1 to 1.0 µg/g). Abstract
[N-(piperidin-1-yl)-5-(4-chlorophenyl)-4-methyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxyamide] (SR 141716A), a selective cannabinoid CB1 receptor antagonist, injected into the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) of male rats, induces penile erection. This effect is mediated by the release of glutamic acid, which in turn activates central oxytocinergic neurons mediating penile erection. Double immunofluorescence studies with selective antibodies against CB1 receptors, glutamic acid transporters (vesicular glutamate transporters 1 and 2 (VGlut1 and VGlut2), glutamic acid decarboxylase-67 (GAD67) and oxytocin itself, have shown that CB1 receptors in the PVN are located mainly in GABAergic terminals and fibers surrounding oxytocinergic cell bodies. As GABAergic synapses in the PVN impinge directly on oxytocinergic neurons or on excitatory glutamatergic synapses, which also impinge on oxytocinergic neurons, these results suggest that the blockade of CB1 receptors decreases GABA release in the PVN, increasing in turn glutamatergic neurotransmission to activate oxytocinergic neurons mediating penile erection. Autoradiography studies with [(3)H](-)-CP 55,940 show that chronic treatment with SR 141716A for 15 days twice daily (1 mg/kg i.p.) significantly increases the density of CB1 receptors in the PVN. This increase occurs concomitantly with an almost twofold increase in the pro-erectile effect of SR 141716A injected into the PVN as compared with control rats. The present findings confirm that PVN CB1 receptors, localized mainly in GABAergic synapses that control in an inhibitory fashion excitatory synapses, exert an inhibitory control on penile erection, demonstrating for the first time that chronic blockade of CB1 receptors by SR 141716A increases the density of these receptors in the PVN. This increase is related to an enhanced pro-erectile effect of SR 141716A, which is still present 3 days after the end of the chronic treatment.

Postoperative pain management an important clinical issue. The clinicians tool-bag remains incomplete. Improvements in the management of postoperative pain will ultimately translate into the broader, safer application of surgical procedures upon a wider patient population. The application of multimodal therapy that includes non-pharmacologic therapies, preemptive therapies, and new medications for the treatment of postoperative pain is an emerging concept that provides significant immediate as well as potential future advantages.

Abstract
The polymorphism at position beta69 of the human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DP molecule has been associated with susceptibility to several immune disorders and alloreactivity. Using molecular modeling, we have predicted a detailed structure of the HLA-DP2 molecule (carrying Glubeta69) complexed with class II associated invariant chain derived peptide (CLIP) and compared it with the form carrying Lys at beta69 (HLA-DP2K69). Major changes between the two models were observed in the shape and charge distribution of pocket 4 and of the nearby pocket 6. Consequently, we analyzed in detail the peptide-binding specificities of both HLA-DP molecules expressed as recombinant proteins. We first determined that the minimum peptide-binding core of CLIP for both HLA-DP2 and DP2K69 is represented by nine aminoacids corresponding to the sequence 91-99 of invariant chain (Ii). We then assessed the peptide-binding specificities of the two pockets and determined the role of position beta69, using competition tests with the Ii-derived peptide CLIP and its mutated forms carrying all the aminoacidic substitutions in P4 and P6. Pocket 4 of HLA-DP2 showed high affinity for positively charged, aromatic, and polar residues, whereas aliphatic residues were disfavored. Pocket 4 of the DP2K69 variant showed a reduced aminoacid selectivity with aromatic residues most preferred. Pocket 6 of HLA-DP2 showed high affinity for aromatic residues, which was increased in DP2K69 and extended to arginine. Finally, we used the experimental data to determine the best molecular-modeling approach for assessing aminoacid selectivity of the two pockets. The results with best predictive value were obtained when single aminoacids were evaluated inside each single pocket, thus, reducing the influence of the overall peptide/ major histocompatibility complex interaction. In conclusion, the HLA-DPbeta69 polymorphism plays a fundamental role in the peptide-binding selectivity of HLA-DP. Furthermore, as this polymorphism is the main change in the pocket 4 area of HLA-DP, it could represent a supertype among HLA-DP molecules significantly contributing to the selection of epitopes presented in the context of this HLA isotype.

Abstract
In this work we evaluated the efficacy and safety of a bread formulation containing chitosan in dyslipidemic type 2 diabetic subjects. For this purpose a total of 18 patients were allowed to incorporate to their habitual diets 120 g/day of bread containing 2% (wt/wt) chitosan (chitosan group, n= 9) or standard bread (control group, n= 9). Before the study and after 12 weeks on the modified diet, the following parameters were evaluated: body weight, plasma cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, triglyceride, and hemoglobin A(1c) (HbA(1c)). Compared with the control group, the patients receiving chitosan-containing bread decreased their mean levels of LDL-cholesterol and significantly increased their mean levels of HDL-cholesterol at the end of the study. There were no significant differences in the body weight, serum triglyceride, and HbA(1c). These results suggest that chitosan incorporated into bread formulations could improve the lipoprotein balance similar to typical biliary salts trappers, increasing the HDL- and lowering the LDL-cholesterol, without changing the triglyceride levels. These results warrant further studies over a longer period of time to evaluate if a persistent improvement in levels of lipoproteins can be attained with this strategy.

Abstract
Human classical satellite DNAs were used as probes to investigate the molecular mechanism(s) of AluI/TaqI attack in situ on specific centromeric areas. The biochemical results obtained show that the majority of such highly repetitive DNAs are not solubilized from chromosomes, in spite of a cleavage pattern identical to that shown in naked genomic DNA digested with the same enzymes. Moreover, when digestion in situ with restriction enzymes precedes in situ hybridization, it is possible to observe an increased signal in the centromeres of some chromosomes as compared to that shown in standard undigested chromosomes and, on the other hand, hybridization labelling in centromeres which are difficult to detect by in situ hybridization using standard undigested chromosomes. Lastly, our results show that centromeric heterochromatin is not a homogeneous class in regard to organizational structure.

Abstract
Vitamin A and its derivatives (retinoids) play important roles in many physiological processes. The recent finding of high levels of cellular retinol-binding protein type 1 immunoreactivity, cellular retinoic acid-binding protein type 1 immunoreactivity and the presence of nuclear retinoid receptors in the central nervous system of adult rodents suggests that retinoids may carry out important roles in the adult brain. In consideration of the role of the hippocampus in spatial learning and memory we evaluated the effect of vitamin A deprivation in adult rats on these functions. Following 12 weeks of vitamin A-free diet, rats were trained to acquire a radial-arm maze task. Results show that this diet induced a severe deficit in the spatial learning and memory task. The cognitive impairment was fully restored when vitamin A was replaced in the diet. We also found a significant decrease in hippocampal acetylcholine release induced by scopolamine, assessed using microdialysis technique, and a reduction in the size of hippocampal nuclei of CA1 region in vitamin-deficient rats, compared to rats fed with a vitamin A-sufficient diet. These results demonstrate that vitamin A has a critical role in the learning and memory processes linked to a proper hippocampal functioning.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to define the number of pleural biopsy samples necessary for optimum diagnostic performance and determine to what extent they are complementary. Eighty-four closed pleural biopsies were performed in our department between June 1996 and January 1998 on 55 males and 29 females with an average age of 64.4 +/- 16.7 years. The study of the pleural fluid included: pH, biochemical testing of pleura/serum (proteins, lactate dehydrogenase, glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, albumin and adenosine deaminase), haemogram, cytology and microbiological testing (Gram-staining, aerobes, anaerobes and mycobacteriae cultures). The biopsies were performed using a Cope needle, with a total of five biopsies for each patient: four for pathological examination (taken numerically in the order in which they were performed: D1, D2, D3 and D4) and one for microbiological testing. In those cases in which the diagnosis was uncertain or effusion persisted, a thoracoscopy or thoracotomy was performed. There were no significant differences in the diagnostic yield of each individual sample (D1, D2, D3 and D4), but there were differences in the sum of the samples, depending on the number of biopsies performed.This was true for total group and the group with carcinomas, but not for the group with tuberculosis. The increase in diagnostic yield with the number of biopsies was more remarkable in the carcinoma cases, where it increased by 35% when four biopsies were performed (54% with one biopsy versus 89% with four biopsies, P < 0.002). In conclusion, the diagnostic yield increased with the number of biopsy samples in the total group and the group with malignancy but not in the group with tuberculous effusions. The best diagnostic performance for malignant pathology was obtained with four samples. In pleural tuberculosis, the diagnostic yield did not increase with more biopsy samples. One high quality sample should be enough to obtain a diagnosis.

Abstract
The exogenous administration of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB), a constituent of the mammalian brain where it likely functions as a neurotransmitter or a neuromodulator, exerts a number of pharmacological effects, including sedation and hypnosis. The present paper describes a procedure for selective breeding of two rat lines which markedly differ in sensitivity to the sedative/hypnotic effect of GHB. Selective breeding originated from Wistar rats showing opposite sensitivity to the sedative/hypnotic effect of 1 g/kg GHB (i.p.). 'Sensitive' Wistar rats, defined as those individuals displaying values of r = sleep time/onset greater than the upper 15th percentile, were mated to generate the GHB-sensitive (GHB-S) line; conversely, 'resistant' Wistar rats (r-values lower than the lower 15th percentile) were mated to generate the GHB-resistant (GHB-R) line. Upper and lower 15th percentiles were also used to establish the selection cut-offs and criteria for rats of subsequent generations. Specifically, r-values of GHB-S rats were required to be r > or =8 on two separate tests with GHB; r-values of GHB-R rats were required to be r < or =2 on two separate tests with GHB. In each of the three generations produced to date, GHB-S rats showed significantly shorter onset, longer sleep times and greater r-scores than GHB-R rats. The selective breeding of GHB-S and GHB-R rats: (a) suggests that sensitivity to GHB is under genetic control, and (b) may constitute a unique model for investigation of the physiological function of GHB.

Abstract
Two Wistar-derived rat lines, one sensitive (GHB-S) and the other resistant (GHB-R) to the anesthetic effect of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB), have been selectively bred. GHB-S and GHB-R rats were also sensitive and resistant, respectively, to the anesthetic effect of baclofen, the prototype GABA(B) receptor agonist, suggesting that they may be useful to elucidate not only the role of endogenous GHB but also that of GABA(B) receptors in sleep and anesthesia.

Abstract
Brucella abortus is the etiological agent of brucellosis, a disease that affects bovines and human. We generated DNA random sequences from the genome of B. abortus strain 2308 in order to characterize molecular targets that might be useful for developing immunological or chemotherapeutic strategies against this pathogen. The partial sequencing of 1,899 clones allowed the identification of 1,199 genomic sequence surveys (GSSs) with high homology (BLAST expect value < 10(-5)) to sequences deposited in the GenBank databases. Among them, 925 represent putative novel genes for the Brucella genus. Out of 925 nonredundant GSSs, 470 were classified in 15 categories based on cellular function. Seven hundred GSSs showed no significant database matches and remain available for further studies in order to identify their function. A high number of GSSs with homology to Agrobacterium tumefaciens and Rhizobium meliloti proteins were observed, thus confirming their close phylogenetic relationship. Among them, several GSSs showed high similarity with genes related to nodule nitrogen fixation, synthesis of nod factors, nodulation protein symbiotic plasmid, and nodule bacteroid differentiation. We have also identified several B. abortus homologs of virulence and pathogenesis genes from other pathogens, including a homolog to both the Shda gene from Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium and the AidA-1 gene from Escherichia coli. Other GSSs displayed significant homologies to genes encoding components of the type III and type IV secretion machineries, suggesting that Brucella might also have an active type III secretion machinery.

Abstract
Fluorescent probes are currently used to evaluate the mitochondrial transmembrane potential in situ. However, in parallel experiments using the probes JC-1 and TMRM in different cell types (human astrocytes, HEp-2, Vero, KB, and HeLa cells), we found that the distribution of JC-1 and TMRM is highly variable not only in different cell types but also in different cells of the same cell type, a condition that has never been documented until our work. This phenomenon depends on a hidden, widespread multidrug resistance (MDR) phenotype that can be recognized only by comparative assays with MDR inhibitors (progesterone, verapamil, and cyclosporin A) and represents a serious risk of error in the evaluation of the mitochondrial potential.
