Abstract
The most common clinical phenotype of progressive supranuclear palsy is Richardson syndrome, characterized by levodopa unresponsive symmetric parkinsonism, with a vertical supranuclear gaze palsy, early falls and cognitive impairment. There is currently no detailed understanding of the full sequence of disease pathophysiology in progressive supranuclear palsy. Determining the sequence of brain atrophy in progressive supranuclear palsy could provide important insights into the mechanisms of disease progression, as well as guide patient stratification and monitoring for clinical trials. We used a probabilistic event-based model applied to cross-sectional structural MRI scans in a large international cohort, to determine the sequence of brain atrophy in clinically diagnosed progressive supranuclear palsy Richardson syndrome. A total of 341 people with Richardson syndrome (of whom 255 had 12-month follow-up imaging) and 260 controls were included in the study. We used a combination of 12-month follow-up MRI scans, and a validated clinical rating score (progressive supranuclear palsy rating scale) to demonstrate the longitudinal consistency and utility of the event-based model's staging system. The event-based model estimated that the earliest atrophy occurs in the brainstem and subcortical regions followed by progression caudally into the superior cerebellar peduncle and deep cerebellar nuclei, and rostrally to the cortex. The sequence of cortical atrophy progresses in an anterior to posterior direction, beginning in the insula and then the frontal lobe before spreading to the temporal, parietal and finally the occipital lobe. This in vivo ordering accords with the post-mortem neuropathological staging of progressive supranuclear palsy and was robust under cross-validation. Using longitudinal information from 12-month follow-up scans, we demonstrate that subjects consistently move to later stages over this time interval, supporting the validity of the model. In addition, both clinical severity (progressive supranuclear palsy rating scale) and disease duration were significantly correlated with the predicted subject event-based model stage (P < 0.01). Our results provide new insights into the sequence of atrophy progression in progressive supranuclear palsy and offer potential utility to stratify people with this disease on entry into clinical trials based on disease stage, as well as track disease progression.

Abstract
Thyroid hormone (TH) is crucial for brain development and function. This becomes most evident in untreated congenital hypothyroidism, leading to irreversible mental retardation. Likewise, maternal hypothyroxinaemia, a lack of TH during pregnancy, is associated with neurological dysfunction in the offspring, such as autism and reduced intellectual capacity. In the brain, TH acts mainly through TH receptor α1 (TRα1). Consequently, mice heterozygous for a dominant-negative mutation in TRα1 display profound neuroanatomical abnormalities including deranged development of parvalbumin neurones. However, the exact timing and orchestration of TH signalling during parvalbumin neurone development remains elusive. In the present study, we dissect the development of parvalbumin neurones in the anterior hypothalamic area (AHA) in male mice using different mouse models with impaired pre- and postnatal TH signalling in combination with bromodeoxyuridine birth dating and immunohistochemistry. Our data reveal that hypothalamic parvalbumin neurones are born at embryonic day 12 and are first detected in the AHA at postnatal day 8, reaching their full population number at P13. Interestingly, they do not require TH postnatally because their development is not impaired in mice with impaired TH signalling after birth. By contrast, however, these neurones crucially depend on TH through TRα1 signalling in the second half of pregnancy, when the hormone is almost exclusively provided by the mother. For the first time, our findings directly link a maternal hormone to a neuroanatomical substrate in the foetal brain, and underline the importance of proper TH signalling during pregnancy for offspring mental health. Given the role of hypothalamic parvalbumin neurones in the central control of blood pressure, the present study advocates the inclusion of cardiovascular parameters in the current discussion on possible TH substitution in maternal hypothyroxinaemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Osteochondral injuries often lead to osteoarthritis of the affected joint. All established systems for refixation of osteochondral defects show certain disadvantages. To address the problem of reduced stability in resorbable implants, ultrasound-activated pins were developed. By ultrasound-activated melting of the tip of these implants, a more secure anchoring is assumed. MATERIALS AND METHODS The aim of the study was to investigate if ultrasound-activated pins can provide secure fixation of osteochondral fragments compared to screws and conventional resorbable pins. In a biomechanical laboratory setting, osteochondral fragments of the medial femoral condyle of sheep were refixated with ultrasound-activated pins [US fused poly(L-lactide-co-D,L-lactide) (PLDLLA) pins], polydioxanone (PDA) pins and conventional titanium screws. Anchoring forces of the different fixation methods were examined, registered and compared concerning shear force and tensile force. RESULTS Concerning the pull out test, the US fused PLDLLA pins and titanium screws (~122 N and ~203 N) showed comparable good results, while the PDA pins showed significantly lower anchoring forces (~18 N). Examination of shear forces showed a significantly higher anchoring of the screws (~248 N) than the US fused PLDLLA pins (~218 N). Nevertheless, the US fused PLDLLA pins could significantly outperform the PDA pins (~68 N) concerning shear forces. CONCLUSION The US fused PLDLLA pins demonstrated a comparable anchorage to the fixation with screws, but were free from the disadvantages of metal implants, i.e. the need for implant removal. The PDA pin application showed inferior biomechanical properties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Osteosynthesis plate removal is one of the most commonly performed procedures in orthopaedic surgery. Due to technological advances and the quality of increasing osteosynthesis material, more and more locked plates have been implanted over the last 20 years. The aim of this study was to determine whether the complication rate during plate removal differs between conventional and locked plates. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this retrospective cohort study, 620 patients were included and divided into two groups based on the type of plate (locked and conventional). Technical complications during implant removal included screw breakage, destroyed screw head, implant breakage, remaining implant material, refracture, bony or soft tissue overgrowth. The following plate-associated complications were identified: osteosynthesis plate not detachable, plate bent or broken, necessity of special tools or plate loosened. Three types of screw-related complications were observed: screw not detachable, screw broken or screw dislocated. RESULTS Overall, complications related to the plate or screws were documented in 110 of the 620 cases. These complications occurred in 48 of the 382 cases involving conventional osteosynthesis (7.7% of all removals, 12.6% of all conventional removals) and in 62 of the 238 cases involving locked plate osteosynthesis (10.0% of all removals, 26.1% of all locked plate removals). The statistical analysis showed a significantly higher implant-related complication rate with locked plates compared to the conventional plates (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Hardware removal can be a complication-afflicted operation, especially cases involving locked-plate removal should only be performed if a strong indication is evident. Possible benefits of the procedure should be considered carefully, taking the cost-benefit ratio into account.

Abstract
A large proportion of critically ill patients have alterations in the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis, collectively known as the nonthyroidal illness syndrome. Nonthyroidal illness syndrome is characterized by low serum thyroid hormone (TH) concentrations accompanied by a suppressed central component of the HPT axis and persistent low serum TSH. In hypothalamic tanycytes, the expression of type 2 deiodinase (D2) is increased in several animal models of inflammation. Because D2 is a major source of T3 in the brain, this response is thought to suppress TRH expression in the paraventricular nucleus via increased local bioavailability of T3. The inflammatory pathway component RelA (the p65 subunit of nuclear factor-κB) can bind the Dio2 promoter and increases D2 expression after lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation in vitro. We aimed to determine whether RelA signaling in tanycytes is essential for the LPS-induced D2 increase in vivo by conditional elimination of RelA in tanycytes of mice (RelA(ASTKO)). Dio2 and Trh mRNA expression were assessed by quantitative in situ hybridization 8 or 24 hours after saline or LPS injection. At the same time points, we measured pituitary Tshβ mRNA expression and serum T3 and T4 concentrations. In RelA(ASTKO) mice the LPS-induced increase in Dio2 and decrease in Trh mRNA levels in the hypothalamus were reduced compared with the wild-type littermates, whereas the drop in pituitary Tshβ expression and in serum TH concentrations persisted. In conclusion, RelA is essential for the LPS-induced hypothalamic D2 increase and TRH decrease. The central changes in the HPT axis are, however, not required for the down-regulation of Tshβ expression and serum TH concentrations.

Abstract
Meloidogyne hapla is one of the most damaging plant-parasitic nematodes in temperate regions. This nematode has a wide host range with more than 500 plant taxa including roses. In Ethiopia, rose production has developed over the past 10 years to the second most important export market after coffee. Considering the high damage potential of M. hapla, infestation of roses in Ethiopia with this nematode could result in major economic losses. Therefore, awareness of this nematode species is extremely important. During two surveys conducted in August 2011 and April 2012, M. hapla was detected in soil samples from six out of nine rose producing farms located in the districts of Ziway, Holleta, Sebeta, and Menagesha. At infested farms, rose plants appeared stunted and less productive and often showed symptoms of chlorosis and wilting. Identification was based on morphological and morphometrical characters of females, males, and second-stage juveniles, which were all within the range of variability known for this species (4). Shape of juvenile stylet knobs, shape of male head, and perennial pattern of the females with characteristic punctuations between the anus and tail terminus were also typical for M. hapla. The morphological identification was confirmed by sequence analysis of the D2-D3 expansion segment of the 28S rDNA gene following amplification with the primers D2A (5'-ACAAGTACCGTGAGGGAAAGTT-3') and D3B (5'-TCGGAAGGAACCAGCTACTA-3') (1). PCR products were purified and sequenced at the Macrogene sequencing facility service (Amsterdam, The Netherlands). Sequences were deposited in GenBank (KJ645427 to 33). The sequences were compared with previously published sequences in NCBI database and showed 96 to 100% sequence similarity with M. hapla accession nos. GQ130139, DQ328685, KF430798, and DQ145641. Unfortunately, comparison of sequences did not provide further information about the origin of this Ethiopian population, if it is native to Ethiopia or was imported with infected plant material. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first record of M. hapla occurring in Ethiopia. M. hapla is known as a serious pest of roses in colder climate regions. In Africa, it was previously reported from Tanzania (3) and South Africa (2). Thus, it appears that this species has now become also established in Ethiopia at higher altitudes (1,400 to 2,100 m above sea level) within the urban hinterland of Addis Ababa. Abstract
Humans are highly efficient in moving in a world of variable resistive forces which result, e.g., from different masses of objects or different directions of movements relative to gravity. However, the underlying mechanisms are challenged when an opposing force is suddenly removed. The resulting involuntary movements are known as accident risks in everyday life. We studied their characteristics upon abrupt cessations of opposing forces of 1, 2, and 4N which were presented in a series of variable or constant forces. The characteristics of the involuntary hand movements are largely determined by the mechanical impedance of the limb. The involuntary movements are oscillatory in nature, and their amplitude increases with stronger opposing force. Limb impedance is modulated both in a reactive and in an anticipatory manner. The reactive modulation occurs during each involuntary movement as a consequence of the neural responses elicited by the rapid limb acceleration consequent upon the cessation of the opposing force. Anticipatory modulation of limb impedance may serve to produce similar involuntary movements in spite of different opposing forces. The modulation is thus stronger with variable forces, where differences between resulting involuntary movements can be experienced more easily, than with constant forces.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Interventions in aorto-coronary venous bypass grafts (CABG) can cause acute procedural complications due to distal embolization of debris. In the FIRST (First European Investigation Regarding the Systematic use of the TriActiv device) multicenter trial the distal endovascular protection system TriActiv (Kensey Nash) was evaluated during intervention of CABG. METHODS 195 patients in 17 centers in Germany with significant disease of a vein graft were enrolled. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were comparable to the SAFER trial. RESULTS Acute procedural success was achieved in 98% of cases. Aspirated debris was found in 96.5% of patients. Primary endpoints (MACE at 30 days) occurred in 8.7% of all pts. (ITT). No patient died and 7.2% of patients suffered from MI. The rate of early revascularization was 1.5%. Secondary endpoints (MACCE at 30 days) were found in 9.2% and at hospital discharge in 8.7% of patients. CONCLUSIONS The TriActiv system is safe and effective. Normal post procedural flow can be preserved and the MACE rate is with 8.7% considerably low. The FIRST trial supports the growing belief that PCI of CABG should be performed with protection systems.

Abstract
AIMS The 6.6 Fr. Sprint Fidelis lead family may allow multiple lead implantation procedures with reduced risk of venous obstruction. METHODS AND RESULTS Two prospective, historically controlled, multi-centre studies were conducted in Europe (80 patients) and Canada (79 patients). The purpose was to assess the ventricular lead-related adverse events (LRAEs) and performance of the small Models 6948 and 6949 defibrillation leads, respectively, in patients with a standard indication for an ICD implant. Safety was assessed by demonstrating equivalence of the LRAE free rate at 1 month to comparable but larger leads (Models 6942, 6943, 6944, 6947and 4074). Seventy-five of 80 patients with a 6948 lead (93.8%) remained free of LRAEs. Seventy-four out of 79 patients (93.7%) with the 6949 lead remained free of LRAEs. The 95% lower confidence bounds were above the critical difference limits. Thus, safety of the Sprint Fidelis((R)) leads is similar to that of larger leads. Electrical performance through 1-month follow-up proved to be acceptable in comparison with other established leads. CONCLUSION These multi-centre studies confirm that smaller defibrillation leads offer similar safety and efficacy features to widely used larger leads; they have low LRAE rates and defibrillation thresholds, while providing the advantage of a smaller introducer size and reduced venous obstruction.

Abstract
Modern workplaces often require adaptation to novel visuo-motor transformations. Findings on age-related variations of such adaptation are rather inconsistent, suggesting that whether or not age-related impairments do occur depends on boundary conditions. This paper examined the hypotheses that age-related variations affect primarily strategic adjustments to novel transformations and can be found for complex (non-linear) transformations, but not for simple (linear) ones. After a practice period with linear and non-linear visuo-motor transformations, open-loop performance, after-effects and explicit knowledge were examined. Consistent with previous findings, older participants had longer movement times and shorter open-loop amplitudes, more so for long than for short target amplitudes. However, the study did not find any age-related variation of adaptation to a novel visuo-motor gain. Regarding adaptation to a non-linear transformation, the findings suggest slightly superior explicit knowledge of younger adults and the development of slightly more efficient closed-loop processes in the course of practice.

Abstract
The nucleotide sequences of the broad-host-range antibiotic resistance plasmids pB2 (61 kb) and pB3 (56 kb), which were isolated from a wastewater treatment plant, were determined and analysed. Both have a nearly identical IncP-1beta backbone, which diverged early from the sequenced IncP-1beta plasmids R751, pB10, pJP4, pADP1 and pUO1. In contrast to the latter plasmids, the pB2 and pB3 backbone does not seem to have undergone any deletions. The complete partition gene parA is located downstream of the mating pair formation (trb) module. A 14.4 kb or 19.0 kb mobile genetic element is present between traC and parA of pB3 and pB2, respectively. This region is typical for insertions in IncP-1beta plasmids, but the insertion site is unique. Both elements differ only by a duplication in pB2 of a tetA(C)-tetR-tnpA(IS26) fragment. The 5 bp target site duplication and the 26 bp inverted repeats flanking the mobile genetic elements are still intact, indicating that the insertion occurred recently. The element consists of three nested transposable elements: (i) a relict of a Tn402-like transposon with a gene for a new class D beta-lactamase (bla(NPS-2)); (ii) within that, another Tn402-like element with a class 1 integron harbouring the gene cassettes cmlA1 for a chloramphenicol efflux protein and aadA2 encoding a streptomycin/spectinomycin adenylyltransferase, and a copy of IS6100; (iii) into the integrase gene intI1 a tetracycline resistance module tetA(C)-tetR flanked by copies of IS26 is inserted. Interestingly, in contrast to all other IncP-1beta plasmids analysed so far, the oriV region between trfA and klcA is not interrupted by accessory genes, and there is no indication that previously inserted accessory genes have subsequently been deleted. The genes kluAB are also missing in that region and should thus be considered acquired genes. These findings, together with the fact that IncP-1beta plasmids acquired accessory elements at various positions in the backbone, suggest that IncP-1beta plasmids without any accessory genes exist in microbial communities. They must occasionally acquire accessory genes by transposition events, resulting in those plasmids that have been found based on selectable phenotypic traits.

Abstract
In bimanual movements, some differences between the movements performed by the two hands cause interference, while others do not. Similarly, in choice between responses with the left and right hand some differences between the two movements increase RT, while others do not. It is suggested that both kinds of effects are, at least in part, due to the incompatibility between processes that determine characteristics of movements jointly for both hands and that are present during preparation as well as during execution. This hypothesis implies that during execution of one movement, programming of a different movement to be performed with the other hand should be impaired, as compared to a condition in which the successive movements of both hands are the same. this expectation was confirmed for finger movements of different forms where an effect on choice RT had been shown previously. On the other hand, interference between execution and programming is not to be expected when successive movements differ in characteristics that are likely to be specified separately for each hand, as indicated by a lacking effect in choice experiments. This expectation was confirmed for successive movements performed with different fingers of either hand as compared to movements performed with the same fingers.

Abstract
The genome sequence of Pseudomonas putida strain KT2440, a nutritionally versatile, saprophytic and plant root-colonizing Gram-negative soil bacterium, was recently determined by K. E. Nelson et al. (2002, Environ Microbiol 4: 799-808). Here, we present a two-dimensional gel protein reference map of KT2440 cells grown in mineral salts medium with glucose as carbon source. Proteins were identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) analysis, in conjunction with an in-house database developed from the genome sequence of KT2440, and approximately 200 two-dimensional gel spots were assigned. The map was used to assess the genomic response of KT2440 to iron limitation stress and to compare this response with that of the closely related facultative human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain PAO1. The synthesis of about 25 proteins was affected in both strains, including four prominent upregulated ferric uptake regulator (Fur) protein-dependent proteins, but there were also striking differences in their proteome responses, for example in the expression of superoxide dismutases (Sod), which may indicate important roles of iron-responsive functions in the adaptation of these two bacteria to different lifestyles. The Sod enzyme of KT2440 was shown to be a novel heterodimer of the SodA and SodB polypeptides.

Abstract
The complete 64508 bp nucleotide sequence of the IncP-1beta antibiotic-resistance plasmid pB10, which was isolated from a waste-water treatment plant in Germany and mediates resistance against the antimicrobial agents amoxicillin, streptomycin, sulfonamides and tetracycline and against mercury ions, was determined and analysed. A typical class 1 integron with completely conserved 5' and 3' segments is inserted between the tra and trb regions. The two mobile gene cassettes of this integron encode a beta-lactamase of the oxacillin-hydrolysing type (Oxa-2) and a gene product of unknown function (OrfE-like), respectively. The pB10-specific gene load present between the replication module (trfA1) and the origin of vegetative replication (oriV) is composed of four class II (Tn3 family) transposable elements: (i). a Tn501-like mercury-resistance (mer) transposon downstream of the trfA1 gene, (ii). a truncated derivative of the widespread streptomycin-resistance transposon Tn5393c, (iii). the insertion sequence element IS1071 and (iv). a Tn1721-like transposon that contains the tetracycline-resistance genes tetA and tetR. A very similar Tn501-like mer transposon is present in the same target site of the IncP-1beta degradative plasmid pJP4 and the IncP-1beta resistance plasmid R906, suggesting that pB10, R906 and pJP4 are derivatives of a common ancestor. Interestingly, large parts of the predicted pB10 restriction map, except for the tetracycline-resistance determinant, are identical to that of R906. It thus appears that plasmid pB10 acquired as many as five resistance genes via three transposons and one integron, which it may rapidly spread among bacterial populations given its high promiscuity. Comparison of the pB10 backbone DNA sequences with those of other sequenced IncP-1beta plasmids reveals a mosaic structure. While the conjugative transfer modules (trb and tra regions) and the replication module are very closely related to the corresponding segments of the IncP-1beta resistance plasmid R751 and even more similar to the IncP-1beta degradative plasmids pTSA and pADP-1, the stable inheritance operons klcAB-korC and kleAEF are most similar to those of the IncP-1beta resistance plasmid pB4, and clearly less similar to the other IncP-1beta plasmids. This suggests that IncP-1beta plasmids can undergo recombination in the environment, which may enhance plasmid diversity and bacterial adaptability.

Abstract
Ralstonia solanacearum is the causative agent of bacterial wilt in many important crops. A specific and sensitive PCR detection method that uses primers targeting the gene coding for the flagella subunit, fliC, was established. Based on the first fliC gene sequence of R. solanacearum strain K60 available at GenBank, the Ral_fliC PCR primer system was designed; this system yielded a single 724-bp product with the DNAs of all of the R. solanacearum strains tested. However, R. pickettii and four environmental Ralstonia isolates also yielded amplicons. The Ral_fliC PCR products obtained with 12 strains (R. solanacearum, R. pickettii, and environmental isolates) were sequenced. By sequence alignment, Rsol_fliC primers specific for R. solanacearum were designed. With this primer system, a specific 400-bp PCR product was obtained from all 82 strains of R. solanacearum tested. Six strains of R. pickettii and several closely related environmental isolates yielded no PCR product; however, a product was obtained with one Pseudomonas syzygii strain. A GC-clamped 400-bp fliC product could be separated in denaturing gradient gels and allowed us to distinguish P. syzygii from R. solanacearum. The Rsol_fliC PCR system was applied to detect R. solanacearum in soil. PCR amplification, followed by Southern blot hybridization, allowed us to detect about one target DNA molecule per PCR, which is equivalent to 10(3) CFU g of bulk soil(-1). The system was applied to survey soils from different geographic origins for the presence of R. solanacearum.

Abstract
Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) belongs to a family of secreted, extracellular matrix-associated proteins that are involved in the regulation of cellular functions such as adhesion, migration, mitogenesis, differentiation and survival. Recent studies have also suggested the up-regulation of CTGF in response to trauma, scar formation and excitotoxicity in the CNS. To further elucidate the localization and regulation of this molecule in the rat brain we performed in situ hybridization experiments and found a very strong and selective expression of CTGF messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) on the band of layer VII neurons throughout the adult cerebral cortex. Similarly strong neuronal expression was also present in the dorsal endopiriform nucleus, extending rostrally from the ventrocaudal cortical layer VII, and in the deep layers of the olfactory glomeruli and the accessory olfactory nucleus. Double in situ hybridization confirmed selective CTGF mRNA expression on a subpopulation (approximately 35%) of microtubule-associated protein 2 mRNA-positive neurons in the cortical layer VII and the dorsal endopiriform nucleus. The nucleus of lateral olfactory tract showed moderate signal intensity; other parts of the forebrain, mesencephalon and brain stem only revealed a very weak level of CTGF mRNA expression. Non-neuronal expression was rare, considerably weaker than on cortical layer VII neurons, and normally associated with blood vessels. Developmental analysis of CTGF mRNA expression in embryonic and postnatal mouse also showed a moderately late onset at embryonic day 16-18, and confirmed the presence of CTGF mRNA in cortical layer VII in a second rodent species. Interestingly, injury experiments using direct cerebral trauma or injection of excitotoxic kainic acid into rat brain failed to up-regulate CTGF mRNA after injury and during the ensuing period of neuronal cell death, gliosis and neural scar tissue formation. Altogether, the current data suggest a constitutive role of CTGF, particularly in the adult cerebral cortex. In view of the strong ascending projections of subplate neurons into cortical layer 1, this molecule may be involved in the modulation of synaptic input to apical dendrites of pyramidal neurons.

Abstract
Cardiovascular magnetic resonance is a valid and accurate tool for the assessment of structural and functional disorders of the heart. Through combination of morphologic and functional studies, it is possible to form a quick diagnosis with a noninvasive examination. In this case, MR-imaging shows a pericardial effusion and a 5 x 5 cm large, well-circumscribed hematoma with displacement of the right coronary artery, which was also visible with other examination techniques as an unclear intracardial mass. At operation a large aneurysm of the right coronary artery was exposed, in addition to a hemorrhagic pericardial effusion.

Abstract
Recently, we [Kleinsorge & Heuer (1999) Psychological Research, 62, 300-312] introduced the notion of generalizing switching operations to account for a characteristic pattern of shift costs that can be observed when participants have to shift between four tasks that result from an orthogonal combination of the two binary task dimensions kind of judgment (numerical vs spatial) and judgment-to-response mapping (compatible vs incompatible). Specifically, while a change of the kind of judgment always results in costs, a change of mapping results in costs only when the kind of judgment is repeated, but results in benefits when the kind of judgment changes as well. In Experiment 1, we replicated and extended this finding with a combination of two spatial kinds of judgment that were more similar to each other and were more unlikely to result in build-in dependencies of the two task dimensions. In Experiment 2, we extended this design to a combination of nine tasks that resulted from a factorial combination of two three-valued task dimensions. In this experiment, shift costs grew monotonically with the number of task dimensions on which a change took place. This outcome is consistent with the assumption that a generalizing switching operation is a forward-acting process that requires a specific target value to switch to.

Abstract
The bacterial rhizosphere communities of three host plants of the pathogenic fungus Verticillium dahliae, field-grown strawberry (Fragaria ananassa Duch.), oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.), and potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), were analyzed. We aimed to determine the degree to which the rhizosphere effect is plant dependent and whether this effect would be increased by growing the same crops in two consecutive years. Rhizosphere or soil samples were taken five times over the vegetation periods. To allow a cultivation-independent analysis, total community DNA was extracted from the microbial pellet recovered from root or soil samples. 16S rDNA fragments amplified by PCR from soil or rhizosphere bacterium DNA were analyzed by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). The DGGE fingerprints showed plant-dependent shifts in the relative abundance of bacterial populations in the rhizosphere which became more pronounced in the second year. DGGE patterns of oilseed rape and potato rhizosphere communities were more similar to each other than to the strawberry patterns. In both years seasonal shifts in the abundance and composition of the bacterial rhizosphere populations were observed. Independent of the plant species, the patterns of the first sampling times for both years were characterized by the absence of some of the bands which became dominant at the following sampling times. Bacillus megaterium and Arthrobacter sp. were found as predominant populations in bulk soils. Sequencing of dominant bands excised from the rhizosphere patterns revealed that 6 out of 10 bands resembled gram-positive bacteria. Nocardia populations were identified as strawberry-specific bands.

Abstract
Task sets can be configured in advance of performing a new task. However, the degree to which advance information is actually used for advance configuration depends on the nature of the available information. The role of implicit learning was explored in 2 experiments by means of a modified serial reaction time task with repeated sequences of 4 dimensionally organized tasks. Although there was clear evidence for implicit learning of the sequence (of length 8), the learning was not associated with a reduction of shift costs, either with a short (200 ms) or with a long (1,200 ms) response-stimulus interval. In contrast, a reduction of shift costs was observed when external precues were introduced in a 3rd experiment. According to these results, the sequences of stimulus features that serve as cues for the tasks to perform on the stimuli are learned, but the representation of the features is void of their task-associated meanings.

Abstract
Cell-cell interactions are important regulatory elements in anterior pituitary (AP) physiology. As model systems to study pituitary cell-cell interactions, AP cells kept either as monolayers or as organotypic reaggregate cultures were analyzed by differential display PCR. We identified six cDNA fragments (osteopontin (Opn), connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), alpha(v)-integrin, cathepsin H, lysozyme and O-acetyl GD(3) ganglioside synthase) that showed elevated expression in monolayers compared with reaggregate cultures and the AP. The adenohypophyseal mRNA expression of Opn and CTGF, two secreted signaling substances, was studied in more detail. In situ hybridization histochemistry revealed that Opn mRNA expression is restricted to a subpopulation of gonadotropes whereas CTGF hybridization signals could not be ascribed to any known cell type. Opn transcript levels were downregulated in the APs of lactating rats and decreased when rats received s.c. injections of 17beta-estradiol for 5 days. The mRNA expression was higher in male than in female rats and increased after gonadectomy. CTGF transcript levels were higher in male compared with female rats and were increased in pregnant rats and in rats treated for 5 days with triiodothyronine or dexamethasone. These results indicate that Opn and CTGF may be of physiological importance as local communication factors in the AP.

Abstract
The authors examined the hypothesis that the phasic and the static cross-talk effects found in bimanual movements with different target amplitudes originate at different functional levels of motor control, which implies that the effects can be dissociated experimentally. When the difference between the short and the long amplitudes assigned to the 2 hands of 12 participants was decreased, the static effect disappeared, In contrast, the phasic effect, which can be observed only at short preparation intervals, did not disappear; although it became smaller in absolute terms, in relative terms it did not. In addition, the authors compared the time course of amplitude variability and examined the correlation between left hand and right hand amplitudes. The disappearance of the phasic amplitude assimilation at increasing preparation intervals turned out to be delayed relative to the decline of the correlation between amplitudes.
