Phytogenic-Mediated Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Using the Seed Extract of Citrullus lanatus and Its Integrated Potency against Multidrug Resistant Bacteria

In the current research study, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) were synthesized via a green synthesis technique using the seed extract of Citrullus lanatus. The study further intended to evaluate the potential synergistic effects of ZnO-NPs with antibiotics against multidrug resistant (MDR) bacteria. It was observed that C. lanatus seed extracts obtained by n-hexane and methanolic solvents revealed the presence of constituents, such as tannins, flavonoids, and terpenoids. Furthermore, the extract of n-hexane displayed the strongest antibacterial activity against Yersinia species (17 ± 1.2 mm) and Escherichia coli (17 ± 2.6 mm), while the methanolic extract showed the maximum antibacterial activity against E. coli (17 ± 0.8 mm). Additionally, the ZnO-NP synthesis was confirmed by ultraviolet-visible analysis with a characteristic absorption peak at 280 nm. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis suggested the absorption peaks in the 500-3800 cm-1 range, which corresponds to various groups of tertiary alcohol, aldehyde, amine, ester, aromatic compounds, thiol, amine salt, and primary amine. The scanning electron microscopy spectra of ZnO-NPs demonstrated the presence of zero-dimensional spherical particles with well-dispersed character. Moreover, encapsulation with ZnO-NPs improved the antimicrobial activity of antibiotics against the panel of MDR bacteria, and the increases in the effectiveness of particular antibiotics against MDR bacteria were significant (P = 0.0005). In essence, the synthesized ZnO-NPs have the potential as drug carriers with powerful bactericidal properties that work against MDR bacterial strains. These outcomes are an indication of such significance in pharmaceutical science, giving possibilities for further research and development in this field.

Characterization and comparative evaluation of wound healing potential of Ajugarin I and Ajuga bracteosa Wall. ex Benth

Ajuga bracteosa (family: Lamiaceae), commonly known as kauri booti, is an important ethnomedicinal plant. The current research was conducted to appraise and compare the in vitro antioxidant and antibacterial profiles as well as in vivo wound healing potentials of Ajugarin I and A. bracteosa extract. Ajugarin I and polyphenols in A. bracteosa were enumerated by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography analysis that confirmed significant amounts of Ajugarin I (2.2 ± 0.02 μg/mg DW) and other phenolic compounds (14 out of 17 standards). A. bracteosa (374.4 ± 0.20 µg AAE/mg of DW, 201.9 ± 0.20 µg AAE/mg of DW, 87 ± 0.30%) showed a higher antioxidant profile compared to Ajugarin I (221.8 ± 0.50 µg AAE/mg of DW, 51.8 ± 0.40 µg AAE/mg of DW, 27.65 ± 0.80%) with 1.86-, 3.89-, and 3.15-fold greater activity in ferric reducing antioxidant power, total antioxidant capacity, and free radical scavenging assays, respectively. Likewise, A. bracteosa showed antibacterial activity against 3/5 strains (MIC 25-200 μg/ml) than Ajugarin I (2/5 strains; MIC 50-200 μg/ml). Hemolytic (<2% hemolysis) and dermal toxicity tests rendered both samples non-toxic. Additionally, A. bracteosa (100 ± 2.34% at day 12; 9.33 ± 0.47 days) demonstrated 1.11- and 1.24-fold higher percent wound contraction and epithelization time, respectively, than Ajugarin I (95.6 ± 1.52% at day 12; 11.6 ± 0.47 days) as assessed by an excision wound model in mice. Histopathological examination further reinforced the better wound healing potential of A. bracteosa with good epithelization, collagen synthesis, fibroblast proliferation, and revascularization. Briefly, we endorse the significant comparative antioxidant, antibacterial, and wound healing activities of A. bracteosa and Ajugarin I and present these as prospective candidates for wound healing drugs.

Mechanistic insight into the synergistic antimicrobial potential of Fagonia indica Burm.f. extracts with cefixime

Fagonia indica Burm.f. is known for its anti-infective character and has been studied in the present work as a synergistic remedy against resistant bacterial strains. Initially, phytochemicals were quantified in n-Hexane (n-Hex), ethyl acetate (E.A), methanol (MeOH), and aqueous (Aq.) extracts by Total Phenolic Content (TPC), Total Flavonoid Content (TFC) and Reverse Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography (RP-HPLC) analysis. Later, after establishing an antibacterial resistance profile for extracts and antibiotics against gram-positive and gram-negative strains, synergism was evaluated in combination with cefixime through time-kill kinetics and bacterial protein estimation studies. Topographic images depicting synergism were obtained by scanning electron microscopy for Methicilin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Resistant Escherichia coli (R.E. coli). Results showed the presence of maximum phenolic (28.4 ± 0.67 μg GAE/mg extract) and flavonoid (11 ± 0.42 μg QE/mg extract) contents in MeOH extract. RP-HPLC results also displayed maximum polyphenols in MeOH extract followed by E.A extract. Clinical strains were resistant to cefixime whereas these were moderately inhibited by all extracts (MIC 150-300 µg/ml) except Aq. extract. E.A and n-Hex extracts demonstrated maximum synergism (Fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) 0.31) against R.E. coli. The n-Hex extract displayed total synergism against R.P. a with a 4-fold reduction in cefixime dose. Time-kill kinetics showed maximum inhibition of gram-negative bacterial growth from 3 to 12 h when treated at FICI and 2FICI values with > 10-fold reduction of the extracts' dose. All combinations demonstrate > 70 % protein content inhibition with bacterial cell wall disruption in SEM images. Fortunately, FICI concentrations have low hemolytic potential (<5%). Conclusively, F. indica extracts can mitigate antimicrobial resistance against cefixime and can be investigated in detail by in vivo and mechanistic studies.

Recent innovations in microplastics and nanoplastics removal by coagulation technique: Implementations, knowledge gaps and prospects

Recently, microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) contamination is a worldwide problem owing to the immense usage of plastic commodities. Thus, the environmental risks by MPs and NPs demand the application of innovative, efficient, and sustainable technologies to control the pollution of plastic particles. Regarding this, numerous technologies, including adsorption, coagulation, filtration, bioremediation, chemical precipitation, and photocatalysis, have been engaged to eradicate MPs and NPs from contaminated waters. However, the coagulation technique is getting much attention owing to its simplicity, higher removal performance, low carbon footprint, and low operational and maintenance cost. Therefore, this paper has been designed to critically summarize the recent innovations on the application of coagulation process to eradicate MPs and NPs from both synthetic and real sewage. More importantly, the effect of pertinent factors, including characteristics of coagulants, MPs/NPs, and environmental medium on the elimination performances and mechanisms of MPs/NPs have been critically investigated. Further, the potential of coagulation technology in eliminating MPs and NPs from real sewage has been critically elucidated for the first time, for better execution of this technique at commercial levels. Finally, this critical review also presents current research gaps and future outlooks for the improvement of coagulation process for eradicating MPs and NPs from water and real sewage. Overall, the current review will offer valuable knowledge to scientists in selecting a suitable technique for controlling plastic pollution.

More effective application of biochar-based immobilization technology in the environment: Understanding the role of biochar

In recent years, biochar-based immobilization technology (BIT) has been widely used to treat different environmental issues because of its cost-effectiveness and high removal performance. However, the complexity of the real environment is always ignored, which hinders the transfer of the BIT from lab-scale to commercial applications. Therefore, in this review, the analysis is performed separately on the internal side of the BIT (microbial fixation and growth) and on the external side of the BIT (function) to achieve effective BIT performance. Importantly, the internal two stages of BIT have been discussed concisely. Further, the usage of BIT in different areas is summarized precisely. Notably, the key impacts were systemically analyzed during BIT applications including environmental conditions and biochar types. Finally, the suggestions and perspectives are elucidated to solve current issues regarding BIT.

Fabrication of Polymeric Hydrogels Containing Esomeprazole for Oral Delivery: In Vitro and In Vivo Pharmacokinetic Characterization

Hydrogel is one of the most interesting and excellent candidates for oral drug delivery. The current study focuses on formulation development of hydrogels for controlled oral delivery of esomeprazole. The hydrogels were prepared by solution casting method by dissolving polymers in Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution. Calcium alginate, Hydroxyl propyl methylcellulose (HPMC), acrylic acid and chondroitin sulfate were used in the preparation of hydrogels. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis showed no incompatibilities between drug and excipients used in the preparation of formulations. The hydrogels were characterized for size and surface morphology. Drug encapsulation efficiency was measured by Ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) spectroscopy. In vitro release studies were carried out using dissolution apparatus. The formulated hydrogels were then compared with the marketed product in vivo using rabbits. The result indicates that prepared hydrogels have a uniform size with a porous surface. The esomeprazole encapsulation efficiency of the prepared hydrogels was found to be 83.1 ± 2.16%. The esomeprazole-loaded hydrogel formulations showed optimum and Pharmacopeial acceptable range swelling behavior. The release of esomeprazole is controlled for 24 h (85.43 ± 0.32% in 24 h). The swelling and release of drug results make the prepared hydrogels a potential candidate for the controlled delivery of esomeprazole. The release of the drug from prepared hydrogel followed the super case transport-2 mechanism. The in vivo studies showed that prepared hydrogel formulations showed controlled and prolonged release of esomeprazole as compared to drug solution and marketed product. The formulations were kept for stability studies; there was no significant change observed in physical parameters, i.e., (appearance, color change and grittiness) at 40 °C ± 2/75% ± RH. There was a negligible difference in the drug content observed after the stability study suggested that all the formulations are stable under the given conditions for 60 days. The current study provides a valuable perspective on the controlled release profile of Hydroxyl propyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and calcium alginate-based esomeprazole hydrogels.

Innovations in the Development of Promising Adsorbents for the Remediation of Microplastics and Nanoplastics - A Critical Review

Microplastics and nanoplastics are being assumed as emerging toxic pollutants owing to their unique persistent physicochemical attributes, chemical stability, and nonbiodegradable nature. Owing to their possible toxicological impacts (not only on aquatic biota but also on humans), scientific communities are developing innovative technologies to remove microplastics and nanoplastics from polluted waters. Various technologies, including adsorption, coagulation, photocatalysis, bioremediation, and filtration, have been developed and employed to eliminate microplastics and nanoplastics. Recently, adsorption technology has been getting great interest in capturing microplastics and nanoplastics and achieving excellent removal performance. Therefore, this review is designed to discuss recent innovations in developing promising adsorbents for the remediation of microplastics and nanoplastics from wastewater and natural water. The developed adsorbents have been classified into four main classes: sponge/aerogel-based, metal-based, biochar-based, and other developed adsorbents, and their performance efficiencies have been critically examined. Further, the influence of various pertinent factors, including adsorbents' characteristics, microplastics/nanoplastics' characteristics, solution pH, reaction temperature, natural organic matter, and co-existing/interfering ions on the removal performance of advanced adsorbents, have been critically assessed. Importantly, the particle application of the developed adsorbents in removing microplastics and nanoplastics from natural water has been elucidated. In addition, barriers to market penetration of the developed adsorbents are briefly discussed to help experts transfer adsorption-based technology from laboratory-scale to commercial applications. Finally, the current knowledge gaps and future recommendations are highlighted to assist scientific communal for improving adsorption-based technologies to battle against microplastics and nanoplastics pollution.

Development of Adapalene Loaded Liposome Based Gel for Acne

Retinoids are considered the mainstay treatment for moderate to severe acne. Adapalene, a third-generation retinoid, has physiochemical properties which hinder the effective delivery of the drug to the skin. Therefore, the current study aimed to develop and evaluate adapalene liposomal loaded gel (ADA-LP gel) for the effective management of acne to improve tolerability and delivery to targeted sites as compared to the conventional dosage form of the drug. A novel spontaneous phase transition method (SPT) was used to formulate liposomes. Liposomal formulation (ADA-LP) was prepared and optimized based on particle size, zeta potential, and PDI. Optimized formulation was further characterized by different techniques and loaded into Carbopol gel. In vitro drug release, ex vivo permeation, and in vivo studies were performed using the prepared adapalene-loaded liposomal-based gel. The in vivo study was done employing the testosterone-induced acne model in mice. The optimized formulation had a size of 181 nm, PDI 0.145, and a zeta potential of -35 mV, indicating that the formulation was stable. Encapsulation efficiency was 89.69 ± 0.5%. ADA-LPs were loaded into the gel. Prepared ADA-LP showed a 79 ± 0.02% release of drug in a sustained manner, within 24 h. The ex vivo permeability study showed a total of 43 ± 0.06 µg/cm² of drug able to permeate through the skin within 24 h. Moreover, only 28.27 ± 0.04% was retained on the epidermis. The developed ADA-LP gel showed significant improvement in the acne lesions in mice with no visible scars and inflammation on the skin. Therefore, ADA-LP-based gel could be a promising carrier system for the safe and effective delivery of Adapalene.

Efficacy of ZnO nanoparticles in Zn fortification and partitioning of wheat and rice grains under salt stress

Zinc (Zn) deficiency is a major health concern in developing countries due to dependency on cereal based diet. Cereals are inherently low in Zn and inevitable use of stressed land has further elevated the problem. The aim of current research was to improve wheat and rice grains grain Zn concentration grown in saline soils through zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) due to their perspective high availability. The ZnO-NPs were prepared by co-precipitation method and characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Two separate pot experiments for wheat and rice were conducted to check the relative effectiveness of ZnO-NPs compared to other bulk Zn sources i.e., zinc sulphate heptahydrate (ZnSO₄·7H₂O) and ZnO. Results showed that salt stress negatively impacted the tested parameters. There was a significant (p ≤ 0.05) improvement in growth, salt tolerance, plant Zn uptake and grain Zn concentrations by Zn application through Zn sources. The ZnO-NPs showed maximum improvement in crops parameters as compared to other sources due to their higher uptake and translocation in plants under both normal and stressed soil conditions. Thus, ZnO nanoparticles proved to be more effective for grain Zn fortification in both tested wheat and rice crops under normal and saline conditions.

Chitosan Nanoparticles Loaded Poloxamer 407 Gel for Transungual Delivery of Terbinafine HCl

The current study aimed to develop chitosan nanoparticles (CSNP) loaded poloxamer 407 (P407) gel formulation for transungual delivery of terbinafine HCl (TBN). TBN-CSNP were prepared by nanoprecipitation method and optimized by face-centered central composite design (FCCCD). Optimized TBN-CSNP formulation exhibited a spherical shape with hydrodynamic diameter; zeta potential and entrapment efficiency (EE) of 229 ± 5 nm; 37 ± 1.5 mV; and 75 ± 2% respectively. The solid state of TBN and its compatibility with formulation ingredients were confirmed through XRD and FTIR analysis respectively. TBN-CSNP loaded P407 gel exhibited pseudoplastic rheological behavior having a spreadability of 11 ± 2 g·cm/s. The washability study showed that 40 ± 2% of the gel was eroded after washing 12 times. Drug release from TBN-CSNP- and TBN-CSNP-loaded gel was 84 ± 5% and 57 ± 3%, respectively. The cumulative quantity of TBN permeated from TBN-CSNP-loaded P407 gel and TBN-loaded P407 gel was 25 ± 8 and 27 ± 4 µg/cm2, respectively. The nail uptake study showed that 3.6 ± 0.7 and 2.1 ± 0.3 µg of rhodamine was uptaken by the nail following 2 h topical application of TBN-CSNP loaded P407 gel and TBN loaded P407 gel, respectively. Hence, the developed CSNP-based P407 gel formulation can be a potential carrier for transungual delivery of TBN to topically treat onychomycosis.

Fe-C-based materials: synthesis modulation for the remediation of environmental pollutants-a review

Presently, the rapid pace in the discovery of emerging aquatic pollutants is increasing the demand for the remediation and treatment of our natural resources. Regarding this, nanotechnology is being considered the potential solution for contaminated water remediation with techniques such as filtration, adsorption, catalysis, and desalination. For this purpose, zerovalent iron (ZVI) is being widely used in the remediation of environmental pollutants due to its large specific surface area and high reactivity. However, ZVI is easy to agglomerate and oxidize, limiting its application in the real environment. Therefore, the present study was designed to discuss the preparation and characterization methods of ZVI composite materials, factors affecting adsorption, the removal effect, and adsorption mechanism of different pollutants by Fe-C materials because the optimization and modification of nano-zero-valent iron is a hot research topic nowadays in this field. Moreover, this paper does also analyze the possibility of the practical application prospects of the team's technology for preparing iron-carbon materials. Thus, this information will be helpful for the development and application of Fe-C-based technologies for water and soil remediation and the prediction of the future research direction of Fe-C composite materials.

Recent advances in biodecolorization and biodegradation of environmental threatening textile finishing dyes

Organic nature of dyes and their commercially made products are widely utilized in many industries including paper, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, photography, petroleum as well as in textile manufacturing. The textile industry being the top most consumer of a large variety of dyes during various unit processes operation generates substantial amount of wastewater; hence, nominated as "Major Polluter of Potable Water". The direct discharge of such effluents into environment poses serious threats to the functioning of biotic communities of natural ecosystems. The detection of these synthetic dyes is considered as relatively easy, however, it is extremely difficult to completely eliminate them from wastewater and freshwater ecosystems. Aromatic chemical structure seems to be the main reason behind low biodegradability of these dyes. Currently, various physiochemical and biological methods are employed for their remediation. Among them, microbial degradation has attracted greater attention due to its sustainability, high efficiency, cost effectiveness, and eco-friendly nature. The current review presents recent advances in biodegradation of industrial dyes towards a sustainable and tangible technological innovative solutions as an alternative to existing conventional physicochemical treatment processes.

Friedelin Attenuates Neuronal Dysfunction and Memory Impairment by Inhibition of the Activated JNK/NF-κB Signalling Pathway in Scopolamine-Induced Mice Model of Neurodegeneration

Oxidative stress (OS) and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) are both key indicators implicated in neuro-inflammatory signalling pathways and their respective neurodegenerative diseases. Drugs targeting these factors can be considered as suitable candidates for treatment of neuronal dysfunction and memory impairment. The present study encompasses beneficial effects of a naturally occurring triterpenoid, friedelin, against scopolamine-induced oxidative stress and neurodegenerative pathologies in mice models. The treated animals were subjected to behavioural tests i.e., Y-maze and Morris water maze (MWM) for memory dysfunction. The underlying mechanism was determined via western blotting, antioxidant enzymes and lipid profile analyses. Molecular docking studies were carried out to predict the binding modes of friedelin in the binding pocket of p-JNK protein. The results reveal that scopolamine caused oxidative stress by (1) inhibiting catalase (CAT), peroxidase enzyme (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and reduced glutathione enzyme (GSH); (2) the up-regulation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in mice brain; and (3) affecting the neuronal synapse (both pre- and post-synapse) followed by associated memory dysfunction. In contrast, friedelin administration not only abolished scopolamine-induced oxidative stress, glial cell activation, and neuro-inflammation but also inhibited p-JNK and NF-κB and their downstream signaling molecules. Moreover, friedelin administration improved neuronal synapse and reversed scopolamine-induced memory impairment accompanied by the inhibition of β-secretase enzyme (BACE-1) to halt amyloidogenic pathways of amyloid-β production. In summary, all of the results show that friedelin is a potent naturally isolated neuro-therapeutic agent to reverse scopolamine-induced neuropathology, which is characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease.

Comparative evaluation of biomedical and phytochemical applications of zinc nanoparticles by using Fagonia cretica extracts

The use of the green approach for nanoparticle synthesis yielded noticeable concern due to its eco-friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and reduced production of toxic chemicals. The current study was designed to formulate Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) by using Fagonia cretica extracts, evaluating its phytochemical content, and different biological activities. Four different solvents; methanol (MeOH), n-Hexane (n–H), aqueous (Aq), and ethyl acetate (EA), had been utilized in the extracting method. ZnO NPs were successfully synthesized and characterized by UV–vis spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The UV–vis spectra showed absorbance peaks between 350–400 nm range and SEM analysis revealed spherical morphology with particle sizes ranging from 65–80 nm. In phytochemical analysis, crude extracts exhibited the highest phytochemical content as they contain enriched secondary metabolites. n-hexane extract showed the highest phenolic contents while aqueous extracts showed the highest flavonoid content. Maximum free radicle scavenging activity was observed in NPs synthesized from ethyl-acetate extract with an IC₅₀ value of 35.10 µg/ml. Significant antibacterial activity was exhibited by NPs polar solvents against K. pneumonae, E. coli, and B. subtilis. Polar solvents showed considerable antifungal potential against A. flavus and F. solani. NPs synthesized from nH extract showed potential cytotoxic activity with an LC₅₀ value of 42.41 µg/ml against brine shrimps. A noteworthy antidiabetic activity was exhibited by nanoparticles synthesized from methanol extract i.e., 52.61 ± 0.36%. Significant bald zones were observed in nanoparticles synthesized from methanol extract rendering protein kinase inhibition. The present study highlights the significance of F. indica as a natural source for synthesizing functional nanoparticles with substantial antioxidant, antimicrobial, cytotoxic, protein kinase inhibitory, and antidiabetic properties.

Design and Evaluation of pH-Sensitive Nanoformulation of Bergenin Isolated from Bergenia ciliata

The aim of the current study is extraction and isolation of bergenin from Bergenia ciliata and fabrication of pH-sensitive Eudragit^® L100 (EL100) polymeric nanoparticles (NP) to tackle limitations of solubility. Bergenin-loaded EL100 nanoparticles (BN-NP) were fabricated via nanoprecipitation and an experimental design was conducted for optimization. A reverse phase-high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) method was developed for the quantitation of bergenin. The optimized nanoformulation was characterized by its particle size, morphology, loading capacity, entrapment efficiency, drug-excipient interaction and crystallinity. An in vitro assay was executed to gauge the release potential of pH-sensitive nanoformulation. The mean particle size, zeta potential and polydispersity index (PDI) of the optimized nanoparticles were observed to be 86.17 ± 2.1 nm, -32.33 ± 5.53 mV and 0.30 ± 0.03, respectively. The morphological analysis confirmed the spherical nature of the nanoparticles. Drug loading capacity and entrapment efficiency were calculated to be 16 ± 0.34% and 84 ± 1.3%, respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) studies unfolded that no interaction was present between the drug and the excipients in the nanoformulation. Crystallography studies revealed that the crystalline nature of bergenin was changed to amorphous and the nanoformulation was stable for up to 3 months at 40 °C. The present study confirms that bergenin isolation can be scaled up from abundantly growing B. ciliata. Moreover, it could also be delivered by entrapment in stimuli-responsive polymer, preventing the loss of drug in healthy tissues.

Clinical effects of TB sequelae in patients with COPD

BACKGROUND: TB is a risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) development and causes the global burden of COPD to increase. The impact of TB sequelae on COPD has been ignored for years.OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of TB sequelae in patients with COPD and investigate the effect of TB sequelae on COPD clinic burden.METHODS: A total of 172 patients who attended the chest diseases outpatient clinic were included in the study. Detailed anamneses of their TB were taken, and pulmonary function tests were performed. The COPD Assessment Test (CAT) questionnaire was administered to determine the health status, and the modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) scale was used to assess the severity of dyspnoea. Thorax computed tomography images were reviewed. The patients were divided into two groups based on the presence of TB sequelae. All data from the two groups were compared.RESULTS: Of 172 patients with COPD, 66 (38%) had TB sequelae; 28 (46%) patients with TB sequelae had no history of TB. Two patients with TB history had no TB sequelae. The group with TB sequelae had lower body mass index (P < 0.001), more emergency admissions (P = 0.018), and higher CAT and mMRC scores (P = 0.002 and P = 0.004, respectively). In the group with TB sequelae, bronchiectasis was more common (P = 0.001).CONCLUSION: In patients with COPD, TB sequelae are very common and increase the COPD clinic burden. The presence of TB sequelae causes an increase in the use of healthcare services by patients with COPD and, therefore, an increase in the burden of COPD. Prevention, early diagnosis and timely treatment of TB are therefore very important.

Phytochemical analysis and comprehensive evaluation of pharmacological potential of Artemisia brevifolia Wall. ex DC

Multitude of diseases and side effects from conventional drugs have surged the use of herbal remedies. Thus, the current study aimed to appraise various pharmacological attributes of Artemisia brevifolia Wall. ex DC. Extracts prepared by successive solvent extraction were subjected to phytochemical and multimode antioxidant assays. Various polyphenolics and artemisinin derivatives were detected and quantified using RP-HPLC analysis. Compounds present in methanol (M) and distilled water (DW) extracts were identified using high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). Extracts were pharmacologically evaluated for their antibacterial, antifungal, antimalarial, antileishmanial and antidiabetic potentials. Moreover, cytotoxicity against Artemiasalina, human cancer cell lines and isolated lymphocytes was assessed. Genotoxicity was evaluated using comet, micronucleus and chromosomal aberration assays. Lastly, anti-inflammatory potential was determined through a series of in vitro and in vivo assays using BALB/c mice.

Maximum extract recovery (5.95% w/w) was obtained by DW extract. Highest phenolics and flavonoids content, total antioxidant capacity, total reduction potential, percentfree radical scavenging, β-carotene scavenging and iron chelating activities were exhibited by M extract. RP-HPLC analysis revealed significant amounts of various polyphenolic compounds (vanillic acid, syringic acid, emodin and luteolin), artemisinin, dihydro artemisinin, artesunate and artemether in ethyl acetate (EA) extract. Total 40 compounds were detected through HRMS. A noteworthy antimicrobial activity (MIC 22.22 µg/ml) was exhibited by EA extract against A. fumigatus and several bacterial strains. Maximum antimalarial, antileishmanial, brine shrimp lethality and cytotoxic potential against cancer cells was manifested by EA extract. None of the extracts exhibited genotoxicity and toxicity against isolated lymphocytes. Highest α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibition capacities were demonstrated by DW extract. Various in-vivo anti-inflammatory models revealed significant (p < 0.05) anti-inflammatory potential of M and DW extracts. In conclusion, present findings divulged theremarkable pharmacological potential of A. brevifolia and endorse its richness in artemisinin.

A critical review on the phytoremediation of heavy metals from environment: Performance and challenges

Phytoremediation is an effective, green and economical technique. Different types of phytoremediation methods can be used for the reduction of heavy metal contaminations, such as phytoextraction, phytovolatilization, phytostabilization and phytofiltration. The biomass of plants and the bioavailability of heavy metals in soil are the key factors affecting the efficiency of phytoremediation. It's worth noting that the low remediation efficiency and the lack of effective disposal methods for contaminated biomass have limited its development and application. At present, biological, physical, chemical, agronomic and genetic approaches have been used to enhance phytoremediation. Disposal methods of contaminated biomass usually include pyrolysis, incineration, composting and compaction. They are effective, but are costly and have security problems. Improper disposal of contaminated biomass can lead to leaching of heavy metals. The leaching possibility of different forms of heavy metal in plants is different. Hence, it has great significance to explore the different forms of heavy metals in plants which can help to explore appropriate disposal methods. According to the challenges of phytoremediation, we put forward some views and recommendations for the sustainable and rapid development of phytoremediation technology.

An overview of the methods for analyzing the chemical forms of metals in plants

Currently, the occurrence of toxic levels of metals in soils is a serious environmental issue worldwide. Phytoremediation is getting much attention to control metals soil pollution because it is economic and environmentally friendly. However, the methods used to detect metals in plants are not uniform and have depicted poor comparability of the research investigations. Therefore, the present overview is designed to discuss the possible chemical forms of metals in various environmental matrixes and the detection methods employed to identify the chemical forms of metals in plants. Moreover, the in situ and indirect methods to detect metals in plants have also been discussed herein. In addition, the pros and cons of the available techniques have also been critically analyzed and discussed. Finally, key points/challenges and future perspectives of these methods have been highlighted for the scientific community.Novelty statementIn the current review, the possible chemical forms of metals in various environmental matrixes are discussed in detail. Various extraction agents and their efficiency for extracting metals from plants have been clearly illustrated. Further, all the available methods for analyzing the chemical forms of metals in plants have been compared.

Bio-purification of domestic wastewater through constructed wetland planted with Paspalidium flavidum

The current study was aimed to designed laboratory scale constructed wetland (CW) for the treatment of domestic wastewater under temperature range (18-38°C) and hydraulic retention times (24 and 48 h). Besides, the soil of vegetative unit of CW was assessed using conventional culturing techniques, and 13 different bacterial species (Escherichia coli, Micrococcus, Pseudomonas, Proteus, Klebsiella, Streptococcus, Alcaligenes, Salmonella, Bacillus, Enterobacter, Staphylococcus, Shigella and Corynebacterium spp.) were determined. The pathogenic microbial load was high in influent samples, but after treatment, about 73.1-99.7% and 43.5-86.7% reduction in CFU/ml and MPN/100 ml index, respectively, were observed. Moreover, the organic loads in terms of COD, TDS, TSS, and turbidity were high in all influent samples, but after treatment, average percentage removal in different physico-chemical parameters was observed during overall treatment operations, that is, COD (59.7-65.6%), TDS (59.6-76.8%), TSS (64.9-76.7%), and turbidity (72.7-91.6%), while pH of the effluent samples was observed in the prescribed limits. It was concluded that laboratory scale CW using natural flora Paspalidium flavidum and bacterial species was efficient in the reduction of different pollution indicators and hence a best option to be modified on pilot-scale for wastewater treatment in the rural regions of Peshawar. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Role of retention times on performance of CW were studied. The commonly existing vegetation was utilized to treat domestic waste water. Both vegetations and HRT are key ingredients in obtaining high treatment efficiency.

Application of microbial immobilization technology for remediation of Cr(VI) contamination: A review

The discharge of chromium (Cr) contaminated wastewater is creating a serious threat to aquatic environment due to the rapid pace in agricultural and industrial activities. Particularly, the long-term exposure of Cr(VI) polluted wastewater to the environment is causing serious harm to human health. Therefore, the treatment of Cr(VI) contaminated wastewater is demanding widespread attention. Regarding this, the bioremediation is being considered as a reliable and feasible option to handle Cr(VI) contaminated wastewater because of having low technical investment and operating costs. However, certain factors such as loss of microorganisms, toxicity to microorganisms and uneven microbial growth cycle in the presence of high concentrations of Cr(VI) are hindering its commercial applications. Regarding this, microbial immobilization technology (MIT) is getting great research interest because it could overcome the shortcomings of bioremediation technology's poor tolerance against Cr. Therefore, this review is the first attempt to emphases recent research developments in the remediation of Cr(VI) contamination via MIT. Starting from the selection of immobilized carrier, the present review is designed to critically discuss the various microbial immobilizing methods i.e., adsorption, embedding, covalent binding and medium interception. Further, the mechanism of Cr(VI) removal by immobilized microorganism has also been explored, precisely. In addition, three kinds of microorganism immobilization devices have been critically examined. Finally, knowledge gaps/key challenges and future perspectives are also discussed that would be helpful for the experts in improving MIT for the remediation of Cr(VI) contamination.

Biological control of fungal pathogens of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) by chitinolytic bacterial strains

The need to increase food production and to reduce the pollution caused by synthetic chemicals has led to a search for biocontrol agents against plant pathogens. In the present study, a total of 37 chitinolytic bacteria were isolated from the rhizospheric soil of tomatoes using a chitin agar medium. In vitro bacterial isolates, that is, TD9, TD11, TD15, and TD24 showed strong antagonistic and enzymatic activities against Rhizoctonia (8%-55%), Fusarium (31%-48%), Colletotrichum (24%-49%), and Aspergillus on a dual culture plate and enzyme assay. Furthermore, these putative antagonistic bacterial isolates were identified as Pantoea agglomerans (TD9), Bacillus subtilis (TD11), Bacillus cereus (TD15 and TD24) using 16S rRNA sequence analysis. Additionally, in culture filtrate in vivo assay, the isolates TD11 and TD15 inhibited the growth of Rhizoctonia solani about 40% and Fusarium oxysporum about 80%. However, in the pot trials, these two bacterial isolates (TD11 and TD15) considerably suppressed the disease rate in tomatoes caused by Fusarium and Rhizoctonia fungal species. Moreover, it was concluded that B. subtilis (TD11) was found to be the most promising putative biocontrol agent, inhibiting the fungal diseases of tomatoes by 50% and showing versatile antagonistic potential.

Evaluation of tire derived rubber (TDR) fixed biofilm reactor (FBR) for remediation of Methylene blue dye from wastewater

The present investigation is focused on development of aerobic biofilm on tire-derived rubber (TDR) media and then evaluation of such system for bioremediation of Methylene blue (MB) dye for 9 weeks. After 9 weeks of operation, the COD, BOD, ammonia and color values have been declined by 89.2%, 98.3%, 99.61% and 99.81%, respectively, While SEM-EDX results showed a variance in weight percent of various elements in TDR without biofilm i.e. raw TDR media, as well as in the 1st and 9th-week samples. Moreover, fine and strong peaks were observed in both the MB simulated wastewater and 9th week TDR samples at 1190, 1300, 1400, 1450, 1500 and 1618 cm^-1 respectively by Raman Spectroscopic analysis. Further, FTIR analysis was performed for the MB simulated wastewater, and absorbance peaks ranging from 1591 to 1363 cm^-1 and 3410 cm^-1 were observed in all the samples with different intensities. To assess the biodeterioration of the TDR media, ATR was performed for the raw, 1st, 2nd and 9th week TDR media samples and in the raw TDR, two important bands, 842 and 2962 cm^-1 were noticed representing -CH = CH and -CH₃. A clear variation of bands and peak intensities were observed in different support media samples. The results indicate that TDR media is a resilient, chemically resistant material and could be employed for the biofilm growth for biological treatment of textile dye wastewater.

Prevalence and antifungal drug resistance of dermatophytes in the clinical samples from Pakistan

Dermatophytosis is a major health problem all over the world including Pakistan. This is the first report of detection of dermatophytes and their antifungal drug resistance in the Northern and Western parts of Pakistan. A total of 154 samples were collected from different hospitals of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and out of them 136 samples were found positive. Tinea corporis (35%) was the most predominant type of infection followed by Tinea capitis (22%). The fungi identified in Tinea corporis infection types were identified as Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Epidermophyton floccosum. The fungi identified in Tinea capitis included Trichophyton violaceum, T. mentagrophytes, Microsporum ferrugineum. The gender wise distribution showed both males (52%) and females (48%) were infected with the fungi. More cases belonged to the rural parts of the country. Age wise distribution showed that the infection was more prevalent in the children and the prevalence decreased with the increase in age. The positive samples were checked against two antifungal agents: fluconazole and nystatin. Among 136 positive samples, none of the isolates showed resistance to nystatin while 7% of the samples showed resistance to fluconazole. The resistant isolates were then identified by amplifying the 18S rRNA gene, using universal primers (ITS1, ITS4). Among the 9 resistant isolates, 5 isolates were identified as Trichophyton spp., 3 as Microsporum spp. and 1 as Epidermophyton spp.

Appraisal of a novel extraction technique for estimation of cadmium content in pea seedlings based on human health risk assessment

In this study, a novel extraction and safety evaluation method for heavy metals based on different functions of plants was proposed, and an edible plant (pea) was used as the research material to explore the feasibility of the novel method. Pea sprouts were cultured in cadmium (Cd) concentrations of 0, 1.0, 3.0, and 5.0 mg L-1, respectively. The Cd in pea sprouts was continuously extracted with 100 °C distilled water, 60% ethanol, 6% acetic acid, and simulated gastric juice. It was observed that highest amount of Cd (48.65-58.87%) was found in the extraction of roots with 6% acetic acid, followed by 100 °C distilled water (28.68-37.61%). While in stems, most of the Cd (70.73-85.39%) was extracted by 6% acetic acid. The recovery rate of the sequential chemical extraction technique employed in this experiment was between 93 and 106%. Compared with traditional methods, this study has its development potential in two aspects. First, it can determine which steps of sequential extractions of heavy metals in plants are the most harmful to humans. Secondly, corresponding measures can be taken to reduce heavy metals in vegetables used daily, such as soaking edible vegetables in vinegar for a short time. Novelty statement: In this study, a novel extraction and safety evaluation method for heavy metals based on different functions of plants was proposed, and an edible plant (pea) was used as the research material to explore the feasibility of the novel method. Compared with the commonly used extraction methods, the novel method is more reasonable and has greater development potential.

Optimization of biosurfactant production from Pseudomonas sp. CQ2 and its application for remediation of heavy metal contaminated soil

The present study was conducted to enhance the biosurfactant production yield of Pseudomonas sp. CQ2 isolated from the Chongqing oilfield (China). Besides, the capability of biosurfactant and underlying mechanism for remediation of heavy metal contaminated soil was also investigated. Our results suggested that maximum biosurfactant production (40.7 g/L) was attained at 35 °C by using soybean oil and ammonium nitrate as carbon and nitrogen sources with pH 7, rotational speed of 175 rpm and inoculation ratio of 3%). The removal efficiencies of 78.7, 65.7 and 56.9% for Cd, Cu and Pb respectively were achieved at optimized bioleaching conditions (pH: 11, soil/solution ratio: 30:1 and non-sterilized soil), comparative tests between common chemical surfactants (SDS, Tween-80) and biosurfactants demonstrated the larger removal capacity of biosurfactants. Through SEM-EDX, it was found that the granular material disappeared, the content of Cd, Cu and Pb decreased significantly, and the soil surface became smooth with hole formation after soil washing following bioleaching. ATR-FTIR results showed that the carboxyl functional groups in biosurfactants could chelate heavy metals. These results indicated that biosurfactants from Pseudomonas sp. CQ2 could effectively eliminate Cd, Cu, and Pb from soil.

Domestic wastewater treatment efficiency of the pilot-scale trickling biofilter system with variable flow rates and hydraulic retention times

In this study, a pilot-scale trickling biofilter (TBF) using pebbles and gravels media was evaluated for the treatment of domestic wastewater. The TBF system was installed in an open environment at residential area of Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, Pakistan, and was operated at three different recirculation flow rates (Q), i.e. 0.04, 0.072 and 0.1 m³/day and under three different HRTs, i.e. 48, 72 and 96 h. It was observed that the efficiency of pilot-scale TBF system in terms of pathogens removal was significant, i.e. at flow rates of 0.04, 0.072 and 0.1 m³/day, an average reduction of 39.8-62.5% (p = 0.007), 35.9-48.6% (p = 0.01) and 25.8-57.3% (p = 0.009) respectively were attained in CFU/mL under different HRTs. Moreover, it has been observed that due to high void spaces up to 30%, pebbles and gravels filter media in co-ordination allowing good microbial growth and increased the diversity of bacterial species. Furthermore, it also facilitate the removal of different pollutant indicators, i.e. chemical oxygen demand (COD) (74.2-80.5%), total dissolved solids (TDS) (60.3-69.5%), electric conductivity (EC) (62.8-68.6%) and phosphates (PO₄) (45.3-60.3%). A significant reduction in total nitrogen (TN) (59-63.3%) was observed at flow rates of 0.04 and 0.072 m³/day (p = 0.005). The experimental data of this research study will be helpful for further modification in the TBF system using different filter media in association and selecting optimal HRTs and flow rates in future study to get maximum efficiency of TBF system while treating domestic wastewater.

Phytochemical management of root knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) kofoid and white chitwood by Artemisia spp. in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.)

In vitro and screen house experiments were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of thirteen phytochemicals from Artemisia elegantissimia and A. incisa on root knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) cv. Rio Grande. A positive control (Carbofuran) and negative control (H2O) were also used for comparison. Effectiveness of phytochemicals against juveniles (J2s) mortality and egg hatch inhibition were evaluated after 24, 48 and 72 hours of incubation at three concentrations viz; 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 mg/mL in vitro conditions. Amongst thirteen phytochemicals, Isoscopletin (Coumarin), Carbofuran and Apigenin (Flavonoid) showed the highest mortality and egg hatch inhibition of M. incognita at all intervals. Inhibition of eggs and J2s mortality were the greatest (90.0%) and (96.0%) at 0.3 mg/mL concentration. Application of phytochemicals caused reduction in number of galls, galling index, and egg masses on tomato plant and enhanced plant growth parameters under screen house conditions. Gall numbers (1.50), galling index (1.00), number of juveniles (4.83) and egg masses (4.00) were greatly reduced and plant growth parameters such as; plant height (28.48 cm), fresh (72.13 g) and dry shoot weights (35.99 g), and root fresh (6.58 g) and dry weights (1.43 g) were increased significantly by using Isoscopletin. In structure activity relationship, juveniles of M. incognita, exhibited variations in their shape and postures upon death when exposed to different concentrations of phytochemicals of Artemisia spp. The present study suggests that Artemisia based phytochemicals possess strong nematicidal effects and can be used effectively in an integrated disease management program against root knot nematodes.

Assessment of the aerobic glass beads fixed biofilm reactor (GBs-FBR) for the treatment of simulated methylene blue wastewater

The present research is focused on the application of glass beads (GBs) in fixed biofilm reactor (FBR) for the treatment of simulated methylene blue (MB) wastewater for 9 weeks under aerobic conditions. The COD of MB wastewater showed a reduction of 86.48% from 2000 to 270.4 mg/L, and BOD was declined up to 97.7% from 1095.5 to 25.03 mg/L. A drastic increase in the pH was observed until the 3rd week (8.5 to 8.28), and later, marginal changes between 8.30 ± 0.02 were noticed. A dramatic fluctuation was observed in ammonia concentration which increased (74.25 mg/L) up till the 2nd week, and from the 3rd week it started declining. In the 9th week, the ammonia concentration dropped to 16.5 mg/L. The color intensity increased significantly up till the 2nd week (259,237.46 Pt/Co) of the experiment and started decreasing slowly thereafter. The SEM-EDX analysis has shown the maximum quantity of carbon content in the GBs without biofilm, and then in the GB samples of 1st, and 9th-week old aerobic biofilms. Furthermore, Raman spectroscopy results revealed that the 9th-week GBs has a fine and strong MB peak and matched with that of the MB stock solution. Overall, the results have shown that the GBs filter media were suitable for the development of active biofilm communities for the treatment of dye wastewater. Thus, GBs-FBR system can be used for wastewater treatment to solve the current problem of industrial pollution in many countries and to protect the aquatic environment from dye pollution caused by the textile industry.

Appraisal of suspended growth process for treatment of mixture of simulated petroleum, textile, domestic, agriculture and pharmaceutical wastewater

The unrestricted discharge of domestic and industrial wastewaters along with agricultural runoff water into the environment as mixed-wastewater pose serious threat to freshwater resources in many countries. Mixed-wastewater pollution is a common phenomenon in the developing countries as the technologies to treat the individual waste streams at source are lacking due to high operational and maintenance costs. Therefore, the need to explore the potential of the suspended growth process which is a well-established process technology for biological wastewater treatment is the focus of this paper. Different wastewater constituents: representing domestic, pharmaceutical, textile, petroleum, and agricultural runoff were synthesized as a representative of mixed-wastewater and treated in two semi-continuous bioreactors (R1 & R2) operated at constant operating conditions, namely MLSS (mg/L): 4640-R1, 4440-R2, SRT: 21-d, HRT: 48-72 h, and uncontrolled pH. The system attained stable condition in day 97, with average COD, BOD and TSS reduction as 84.5%, 86.2%, and 72.2% for R1; and 85.1%, 87.9%, and 75.1% for R2, respectively. Phosphate removal on average was by 74.3% in R1 and 76.6% in R2, while average nitrification achieved in systems 1 and 2 were 56.8% and 54.7%, respectively. The biological treatment system has shown potential for improving the quality of mixed-wastewater to the state where reuse may be considered and tertiary treatment can be employed to polish the effluent quality.

The Assessment of antimicrobial activity of cerumen (earwax) and antibiotics against pathogenic bacteria isolated from ear pus samples

The present study is focused on the assessment of the antimicrobial activity of cerumen and antibiotics against bacteria isolated from ear pus samples. Thus, a total of 50 ear pus samples were collected from infected patients using sterile swabs and were screened using pure culture techniques. Total of 04 different bacterial isolates were identified while, the prevalence data revealed that Pseudomonas spp., were dominant (58%, n = 29) among isolated bacteria followed by Staphylococcus spp., (22%, n = 11), Escherichia coli (14%, n = 7) and Proteus spp., (6%, n = 3). Further, bioassay revealed that Pseudomonas spp., and Staphylococcus spp., were most sensitive to Clindamycin (94.73%) while displayed resistant to Ciprofloxacin and Ampicillin. Similarly, E. coli and Proteus spp., were most sensitive to Ciprofloxacin (92.8-95.21%) as compared to the other antibiotics. Moreover, antibacterial activity of cerumen was also assessed against test organisms and its maximum activity was observed against Pseudomonas spp., (90% equivalent to Clindamycin potency) and Staphylococcus spp., (60% equivalent to Amoxicillin potency) while least effective against E. coli (36%) and Proteus spp., (22%). Thus, it was concluded that the antibacterial activity of cerumen might be due to the presence of potential chemicals i.e. flavonoids and terpenoids.

Efficient removal of acid orange 7 using a porous adsorbent-supported zero-valent iron as a synergistic catalyst in advanced oxidation process

This study focuses on the synthesis of granular red mud reinforced by zero-valent iron (Fe@GRM) and its application for the removal acid orange 7 (AO7) from aqueous solution. Then ZVI is employed as a catalyst for the activation of persulfate (PS) to produce sulfate radicals (SO₄^•-) that are produced at 900 °C in an anoxic atmosphere using the direct reduction of iron oxide in the red mud with maize straw as the reductant. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) are used to illustrate the morphology and porous structure of the Fe@GRM. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that Fe@GRM was loaded with zero-valent iron. This characterization confirmed that the Fe@GRM was a porous structure material that contained zero-valent iron. The influence of conditions for AO7 elimination, including initial pH, Fe@GRM dosage, initial AO7 concentrations, and temperature, is also investigated. The removal efficiency of AO7 was 90.78% using Fe@GRM/PS, while only 18.15% was removed when Fe@GRM was used alone. The degradation kinetics were well fitted to a pseudo-first-order kinetic model, and the rate of removal increased with temperature, demonstrating an endothermic elimination process. The Arrhenius activation energy of the process was 20.77 kJ/mol, which indicated that the reduction of AO7 was a diffusion-mediated reaction. Fe@GRM is a low-cost material that demonstrated outstanding performance with great potential for wastewater treatment.

Isolation, identification, and characterization of diesel-oil-degrading bacterial strains indigenous to Changqing oil field, China

In the present study, 12 indigenous diesel-oil-degrading bacteria were isolated from the petroleum-contaminated soils of the Changqing oil field (Xi'an, China). Measurement of the diesel-oil degradation rates of these strains by the gravimetric method revealed that they ranged from 42% to 66% within 2 weeks. The highest degradation rates were observed from strains CQ8-1 (66%), CQ8-2 (62.6%), and CQ11 (59%), which were identified as Bacillus thuringiensis, Ochrobactrum anthropi, and Bordetella bronchialis, respectively, based on their 16S rDNA sequences. Moreover, the physiological and biochemical properties of these three strains were analyzed by Gram staining, catalase, oxidase, and Voges-Proskauer tests. Transmission electron microscopy showed that all three strains were rod shaped with flagella. Gas chromatography and mass spectrometric analyses indicated that medium- and long-chain n-alkanes in diesel oil (C11-C29) were degraded to different degrees by B. thuringiensis, O. anthropi, and B. bronchialis, and the degradation rates gradually decreased as the carbon numbers increased. Overall, the results of this study indicate strains CQ8-1, CQ8-2, and CQ11 might be useful for environmentally friendly and cost-effective bioremediation of oil-contaminated soils.

Encapsulated green magnetic nanoparticles for the removal of toxic Pb2+ and Cd2+ from water: Development, characterization and application

Current research is based on an innovative approach of the fabrication of encapsulated sustainable, green, phytogenic magnetic nanoparticles (PMNPs), to inhibit the generation of secondary pollutants (Iron/Fe^o) during water treatment applications. These novel bio-magnetic membrane capsules (BMMCs) were prepared using two-step titration gel crosslink method, with polyvinyl alcohol and sodium alginate matrix as the model encapsulating materials to eliminate potentially toxic metals (Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺) from water. The development of BMMCs was characterized by FTIR, XRD, XPS, SEM, VSM, TGA and EDX techniques. The effects of various operating parameters, adsorbent dose, contact time, solution pH, temperature, initial concentration of metals cations and co-existing ions were studied. The hysteresis loops have illustrated an excellent super-paramagnetic nature, demonstrating the smooth encapsulation of PMNPs without losing their magnetic properties. The maximum monolayer adsorptive capacities estimated at pH 6.5 by the Langmuir isotherm model were 548 and 610.67 mg/g for Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺, respectively. The novel BMMCs did not only control oxidation of PMNPs but also sustained the adsorptive removal over a wide range of pH (3-8), and the electrostatic interaction and ion-exchange were the core adsorption mechanisms. The BMMCs could easily be regenerated using 25% HNO₃ as an eluent for successful usage in seven repeated cycles. Therefore, the BMMCs as a material can be used as an excellent sorbent or composite material to remove toxic metals Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺, showing strong potential for improving water and wastewater treatment technologies.

Overview of microbes based fabricated biogenic nanoparticles for water and wastewater treatment

Treatment of toxic and emerging pollutants (T&EPs) is increasing the threats to the survival of conventional wastewater treatment (WWTs) technologies. The high installation and operational costs of advanced treatment technologies have shifted the research interest to the development of economical and reliable technology for management of T&EPs. Thus, recently biogenic nanoparticles (BNPs) fabricated using microbes/microorganisms are getting tremendous research interest due to their unique properties (i.e. high specific surface area, desired morphology, catalytic reactivity) for the biodegradation and biosorption of T&EPs. In addition, BNPs can be manufactured using metal contaminated water which indicates a hidden potential for resource recovery and utilization. Therefore, the present study discusses the adsorptive and catalytic performance of BNPs in the removal of T&EPs from water (W) and wastewater (WW). In addition, inspired by the superior performance of BNPs in advance WWT, a model of BNPs based WWT resource recovery and utilization process is also proposed. Finally, main issues i.e. mass production, leaching, poisoning/toxicity, regeneration, reusability and fabrication costs and process optimization are discussed which are main hinders in the transfer of BNPs based WWT technologies from laboratory to commercial scale.
