Abstract
This study examined the effect of N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), a reactive oxygen species (ROS) inhibitor, on renal interstitial fibrosis induced by unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) in mice. UUO led to a significant increase in the fibrotic area of obstructed kidneys, which was attenuated by NAC (84.8 mg/kg/d) in the drinking water. Renal expression of type III collagen and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α mRNAs was elevated in UUO mice and inhibited by NAC. Extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK1/2) phosphorylation was significantly elevated by UUO, and NAC significantly attenuated the elevation. UUO inhibited the activity of glutathione peroxidase, while NAC restored its activity. Together, the results of this study suggest that renal interstitial fibrosis induced by UUO was ameliorated by NAC via several mechanisms including increased glutathione peroxidase activity, reduced phosphorylation of ERK1/2, and reduced expression of TNF-α and type III collagen mRNAs.

Abstract
This study aimed to propose a novel method for designing a product recommendation virtual agent (PRVA) that can keep users motivated to interact with the agent. In prior papers, many methods of keeping users motivated postulated real-time and multi-modal interactions. The proposed novel method can be used in one-direction interaction. We defined the notion of the “hidden vector,” that is, information that is not mentioned by a PRVA and that the user can suppose spontaneously. We conducted an experiment to verify the hypothesis that PRVAs having a hidden vector are more effective than other PRVAs. As a result, it was shown that PRVAs having a hidden vector were perceived as being more persuasive than other PRVAs and strongly motivated the users to use the PRVAs. From these results, the proposed method was shown to be effective.

Observing the Transformation of Bodily Self-consciousness in the Squeeze-machine Experiment. J Vis Exp 2019. Abstract
How is our bodily self-consciousness acquired, and how does it affect cognition? To investigate this, we conducted an experiment using the squeeze machine, a device that provides pressure along the length of the user's whole body. The squeeze machine is used to help autistic people relax. The inventor of the machine, Dr. Temple Grandin says that the squeeze machine, beyond bringing her relaxation, enables her to feel empathy for others. This claim is of considerable interest and raises the following two points; first, the problem of empathy in autism is an important issue and Squeeze Machine could be effective. Second, it suggests that the physical action of Squeeze Machine could provide an insight of mind-body problem to us. Here, we hypothesize that the squeeze machine focuses conscious to direct the bodily self, transforming bodily self-consciousness itself. Such intentionality could bring empathy to others. In this study, we tested whether bodily self-consciousness would be transformed through the squeeze-machine experience. In the first part of the protocol, we simplified the original design of Grandin's squeeze machine but ensured that it retained its relaxing effect. In the second part of the protocol, we adopted a preestablished method of peri-personal space (PPS) measurement to estimate changes in extended bodily space. The results showed that the boundaries of PPS that appeared in the control experiment disappeared during the use of the squeeze machine. Indeed, collected subjective reports suggest that bodily self-consciousness continually drifted between the point of action of the external force (squeeze-machine pressure) and of an internal force (balance among body parts that are usually not consciously controlled), leading to the abandonment of the immobilization of individual PPS.

Abstract
The present study aimed to develop a short-form self-report measure to assess relaxation effects (S-MARE). Participants (N = 190) responded to a questionnaire comprised of 45 items assessing relaxation and non-relaxation based on the Relaxation Inventory (Crist et al., 1989). Exploratory factor analysis identified three factors: physiological tension, psychological relaxation, and anxiety. Each factor was related to 5 items and each had an acceptable Cronbach's coefficient (alpha = .93, .94, and .85). S-MARE scores pre- and post- relaxation instruction were significantly correlated with the Emotional Relaxation Scale (Tokuda, 2011) (r = .446) and with State Anxiety (r = -.531) (N = 172). There was a significant correlation between the amplitude of the high frequency component of heart rate variability during relaxation instruction and physiological tension scores on the S-MARE (r = .456-.474, N = 24). These results confirmed the reliability and validity of the S-MARE in terms of physiological correlation with cardiac parasympathetic tone, suggesting that the S-MARE is a valid measure of relaxation effects.

Abstract
The plasmodium of Physarum polycephalum is often used in the implementation of non-linear computation to solve optimization problems, and this organismal feature was not used in this analysis to compute perception and/or sensation in humans. In this paper, we focused on the Kanizsa illusion, which is a well-known visual illusion resulting from the differentiation-integration of the visual field, and compared the illusion with the adaptive network in the plasmodium of P. polycephalum. We demonstrated that the network pattern mimicking the Kanizsa illusion can be produced by an asynchronous automata-fashioned model of the foraging slime mold and by the real plasmodia of P. polycephalum. Because the protoplasm of the plasmodium is transported depending on both local and global computation, it may contain differentiation-integration processes. In this sense, we can extend the idea of perception and computation.

Abstract
To examine the inter-rater reliability of Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised, Japanese Version (ADI-R-JV), the authors recruited 51 individuals aged 3-19 years, interviewed by two independent raters. Subsequently, to assess the discriminant and diagnostic validity of ADI-R-JV, the authors investigated 317 individuals aged 2-19 years, who were divided into three diagnostic groups as follows: autistic disorder (AD), pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified, and other psychiatric diagnosis or no diagnosis, according to the consensus clinical diagnosis. As regards inter-rater reliability, intraclass correlation coefficients of greater than 0.80 were obtained for all three domains of ADI-R-JV. As regards discriminant validity, the mean scores of the three domains was significantly higher in individuals with AD than in those of other diagnostic groups. As regards diagnostic validity, sensitivity and specificity for correctly diagnosing AD were 0.92 and 0.89, respectively, but sensitivity was 0.55 for individuals younger than 5 years. Specificity was consistently high regardless of age and intelligence. ADI-R-JV was shown to be a reliable tool, and has sufficient discriminant validity and satisfactory diagnostic validity for correctly diagnosing AD, although the diagnostic validity appeared to be compromised with respect to the diagnosis of younger individuals.

Abstract
This study developed a Japanese version of the Child Social Preference Scale, which measures children's social withdrawal. In addition, we examined developmental changes of children's withdrawal and the relationships between withdrawal and problematic behaviors. The participants were 7 012 mothers of preschool, elementary school, and middle school children. A factor analysis revealed a two-factor solution of shyness and social disinterest, which is consistent with previous studies. Shyness decreased as children's grade level increased. Social disinterest changed in a quadratic manner. The shyness score was lowest in the lower grades of elementary school. Shyness was related to more emotional symptoms, more peer relationship problems, and less prosocial behavior. Social disinterest was related to peer relationship problems. The importance of the distinction between shyness and social disinterest is discussed.

Evaluation of the Japanese version of the Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire as a screening tool for clumsiness of Japanese children. Abstract
Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is characterized by clumsiness and coordination difficulties. DCD interferes with academic performance and participation in physical activities and psychosocial functions, such as self-esteem, cognition, or emotion, from childhood through adolescence to adulthood. DCD is a common pediatric condition and its prevalence is estimated to be 6% worldwide. Although English questionnaires are available, there is no questionnaire to identify DCD in Japan, and therefore, no information on its prevalence is available. Recently, we developed the Japanese version of the Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire (DCDQ-J). The purpose of this study was to describe the applicability of the DCDQ-J for use with a community-based population of children in Japan and to investigate the relationships between coordination and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) tendencies or intelligence. The DCDQ-J was completed by 6330 parents or guardians of children and adolescents. We employed the ADHD-rating scale and determined the intelligence quotient (IQ) of the children. Two-way analysis of variance showed that the scores linearly increased as the children's grades advanced in 2 subscales, namely, control during movement and fine motor. In contrast, non-linear changes were found in the scores of the general coordination subscale. The total scores of the DCDQ-J and ADHD-RS were significantly correlated, but no relationship between DCDQ-J scores and IQ was found. The DCDQ-J is expected to be a useful screening tool to identify and assess motor coordination difficulties of children in Japan and enable cross-cultural comparisons.

Abstract
Using the Japanese version of home form of the ADHD-RS, this survey attempted to compare the scores between the US and Japan and examined the correlates of ADHD-RS. We collected responses from parents or rearers of 5977 children (3119 males and 2858 females) in nursery, elementary, and lower-secondary schools. A confirmed factor analysis of ADHD-RS confirmed the two-factor solution (Inattentive and Hyperactive-Impulsive) same as previous studies. ADHD-RS scores were not related to IQ, but were negatively associated with standardized achievement test scores. Males showed stronger ADHD tendencies than did the females, and the scores ended to decline as the children grew older. Japanese children scored lower than did their US children in Hyperactive-Impulsive among all of the sex-age groups. Japanese version of home form of the ADHD-RS was developed with good reliability and validity. More researches of ADHD in Japanese children are required.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Change versus stability of personality in late adulthood is an intriguing yet understudied issue. This cross-sectional study examined age and gender differences in Cloninger's biosocial model of personality, as well as their relation to health in a Japanese community sample whose age exceeds 50 years. METHOD Participants (N=330) completed the Temperament and Character Inventory and the General Health Questionnaire. MANOVA and hierarchical regression analyses were conducted. RESULTS Age-related decreases in Reward Dependence, Self-Directedness, Cooperativeness, and an increase in Self-Transcendence were found. Health was significantly predicted by Harm Avoidance and Self-Directedness. CONCLUSION Personality change in late adulthood tends to occur in environmentally-based character, in a pattern of gradual social detachment and internal spiritual growth. Personality is a stronger predictor of health than demographic variables.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the CT findings of rupture of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the caudate lobe of the liver. The CT scans of five cases of rupture of HCC in the caudate lobe of the liver were retrospectively reviewed and correlated with clinical records. All cases showed exophytic tumors in the caudate lobe of the liver and high-attenuation hematomas in the lesser sac on CT. A lesser sac hematoma may be a sentinel clot sign of rupture of HCC in the caudate lobe.

Abstract
A coupled cell-free translation/glycosylation system, prepared from Spodoptera frugiperda insect cells, was established and optimized for protein production and glycosylation efficiency. Both translation and glycosylation were stimulated by addition of Mg2+, K+, ATP, GTP, creatine kinase and creatine phosphate, suggesting that glycoprotein productivity is largely determined by translation efficiency. However, high concentrations of creatine phosphate significantly inhibited translation. Spermidine stimulated both translation and glycosylation, but glycosylation required higher concentrations of spermidine than translation. Furthermore, extracts prepared at a nitrogen pressure of 10 kg/cm2 with the Mini-Bomb cell disruption chamber had the highest glycoprotein productivity; and extracts prepared at the higher nitrogen pressure of 15 kg/cm2 retained glycosylation ability. While extracts prepared with the Potter-Elvehjem homogenizer could mediate translation, no glycosylation was achieved. This indicated that the posttranslational machinery might survive disruption by high pressure, but not by physical shearing force. This insect cell-free system was able to synthesize approximately 25 microg of glycosylated gp120/ml of reaction mixture.

Abstract
Ultra slow infusion dynamic MR imaging using an infusion pump(IP-MRI) was performed in six patients with metastatic liver tumor or unresectable gastric cancer to evaluate ant-cancer drug distribution. We used un implanted port for the infusion of Gd-DTPA by infusion pump. On IP-MRI, the speed of Gd-DTPA infusion was very slow (0.01 ml/sec) , the same as drug infusion at chemotherapy. The contrast enhancement of tumors was extremely clear. Therefore, IP-MRI was considered feasible for the evaluation of drug distribution.

Abstract
The authors evaluated a flow-independent magnetic resonance (MR) imaging technique in extremity veins with slow flow that relies on the prolonged T2 of blood to create angiographic contrast. A commercially available heavily T2-weighted fast-spin-echo sequence was optimized for MR venography in volunteer and phantom studies. Good depiction of venous anatomy was routinely obtained with the optimized method. Fast-spin-echo MR venography allowed evaluation of slow-flow systems such as the calf and forearm veins.

Abstract
We examined the characteristic features of galanin (GAL)-containing nerve afferents in the intermediolateral nucleus (IML) of the rat lumbosacral spinal cord (L6, S1), i.e., spinal parasympathetic nucleus, by immunocytochemistry at both light and electron microscopic levels. Firstly, the types of synapses formed by GAL-immunoreactive (IR) axon terminals and their post- or presynaptic elements were examined in random ultrathin sections. A total of 109 synapses were examined. Axodendritic (71%) and axo-somatic (20%) synapses were always of the asymmetrical type. Axo-axonic synapses (9%) were occasionally found; GAL-IR axon terminals were either postsynaptic (3%) or presynaptic (6%) to non-IR axon terminals. By confocal laser microscopy, many GAL-IR axon terminals were seen close to cell bodies and proximal dendrites of the IML neurons that were retrogradely labeled with Fluoro-Gold injected into the pelvic ganglion. Some GAL-IR axon terminals were identified to be presynaptic to them under the electron microscope, by restaining for GAL immunoreactivity with the immunoperoxidase method. These findings suggest that the GAL afferents are involved in the parasympathetic motor regulation of pelvic organs via their central synaptic influences upon preganglionic neurons. Finally, hemi-transection of the upper lumbar segments (L1-L3) or unilateral dorsal rhizotomy (L5-S2) did not significantly alter the immunoreactivity for GAL in the IML. These results suggest that GAL afferents do not originate from regions rostral to the IML nor from the dorsal root ganglion, but probably from GAL cells located at least within the lower lumbar segments and/or sacral spinal cord.

Abstract
Right lower abdominal pain is a common problem in the pediatric population. Ultrasonography (US) is a well-accepted imaging modality in the clinical management of this problem. One hundred and six consecutive pediatric patients with right lower abdominal pain were prospectively evaluated. There were 54 boys and 52 girls, with ages ranging from 3 to 15 years (mean: 9.9 years). Final diagnoses were established based on pathological findings or clinical follow-up. US had sensitivity of 90%, specificity of 98%, and accuracy of 94% in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis. Among all true negative cases (n = 55), there was a variety of US findings other than appendiceal abnormality in 21 cases including intestinal and/or mesenteric (n = 19), gallbladder (n = 1), and ovarian (n = 1) abnormalities. All 21 cases were managed medically without complication. We conclude that US of pediatric right lower abdominal pain is a reliable imaging modality not only for the diagnosis of surgical cases but for eliminating the unexpected surgical intervention.

Abstract
An extract from intact spores of Bacillus cereus T having a germination-inducing activity was studied. Two distinct germinative principles were found through dialysis of the extract. One was diffusible through the dialysis membrane and the other was non-diffusible. The activity of the former fraction was inhibited by the addition of 1 mM glycoletherdiamine-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (GEDTA), whereas the latter fraction was inactive unless GEDTA was added to the assay system. The diffusible principle maintained the major portion of the activity found in the crude spore extract. By means of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using a gel permeation chromatography column, 9 fractions were obtained from the deproteinized diffusible fraction. Of those fractions, two fractions (No. 1 and No. 8) were responsible for the germination-inducing activity, but no reconstituted activity was observed unless both fractions No. 1 and No. 8 were added to the assay system. Amino acid analysis of fraction No. 1 revealed that the fraction was rich in free amino acids, especially in alanine. On the other hand, by the use of reverse-phase HPLC and fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry, it was concluded that the effective substance in fraction No. 8 was inosine. Based on these findings, it was suggested that the active substances in fraction No. 1 might be a free amino acid such as L-alanine and/or Ca2+ and a Ca(2+)-binding substance.

Abstract
Percutaneous transhepatic cholangioscopy (PTCS) is an useful technique to evaluate or treat biliary diseases, although PTCS is an invasive method for the patients. We used 5 F or 7 F of super fine cholangioscopy to treat two cases of choledocholithiasis after surgery without dilatation of drainage tract. We developed different types of bended sheath for supplement of lack of angle system in this cholangioscope. Furthermore, by using bended sheath, cholangioscopic view improved, because saline was injected at the same time via the sheath. We emphasize that super fine cholangioscope with bended sheath is a safe and useful modality for evaluation of biliary disease.

Abstract
Biphasic germination induced by inosine in the presence of Ca2+ was examined using Bacillus cereus T spores treated with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and dithiothreitol (DTT) at pH 10. The first phase of the germination was stimulated by Ca2+ in the concentration-dependent manner, showing the optimal concentration at 0.5-1.0 mM. The second phase appeared to be insensitive to the cation. The optimal temperatures for the first and the second phase were 25 C and 40 C, respectively; the optimal pHs for the two phases were 7-9 and around 7.5, respectively. Heat resistance and dipicolinic acid of the SDS-DTT-treated spores were lost mostly during the first phase. A Ca(2+)-specific chelator, glycoletherdiamine-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (GEDTA), inhibited the first phase evoked by Ca2+, while it had no inhibitory effect on the second phase. In contrast, the divalent cations examined, except Mg2+ and Sr2+, affected not only the first phase but also the second phase. The order of inhibitory effect on the first phase was Hg2+ > Zn2+ > Ba2+, Co2+, Cu2+ > Mn2+; on the second phase, it was Hg2+ > Cu2+ > Zn2+ > Co2+ > Mn2+ > Ba2+.

Abstract
Effect of 8-(N,N-diethylamino)octyl-3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoate hydrochloride (TMB-8), a calcium antagonist, on germination of Bacillus cereus T spores induced by L-alanine and inosine was investigated. TMB-8 had no effect on the germination of heat-activated spores, whereas it inhibited that of nonactivated spores. The TMB-8 inhibitory effect was antagonized competitively by inosine, but not by L-alanine. Addition of Ca2+ reversed the inhibitory effect of TMB-8 in a dose-related fashion. Based on the results, a role of inosine and a site(s) for inhibitory action of TMB-8 in the process leading to the germination of nonactivated spores were discussed.

Abstract
We retrospectively reviewed 53 CT scans in 42 patients with surgically proven intestinal injury following blunt abdominal trauma. Free air and localized low density fluid were specific signs of intestinal injury. Free peritoneal fluid without a known source, thickened bowel wall, and thickened mesentery were non-specific ones. Specific and non-specific findings were demonstrated in six (22%) and 23 (85%) of 27 CT scans performed within four hours following trauma, and 19 (73%) and 26 (100%) of 26 CT scans performed after four hours, respectively. CT is useful for the diagnosis of blunt intestinal injuries, but early diagnosis is difficult because of the lack of specific signs.

Abstract
The effect of calcium on germination of coat-modified Bacillus cereus T spores was investigated. Coat-modified spores produced either by chemical extraction (SDS-DTT-treated spores) or by mutagenesis (10LD mutant spores) were unable to germinate in response to inosine. While SDS-DTT-treated spores could germinate slowly in the presence of L-alanine, 10LD mutant spores could not germinate at all. The lost or reduced germinability of coat-modified spores was restored when exogenous Ca2+ was supplemented to the germination media. The calcium requirement of coat-modified spores for germination was fairly specific. The simultaneous presence of germinant with Ca2+ was also required for germination of coat-modified spores. The optimal recovery of germinability was observed in the presence of 1.0 mM of calcium acetate. The calcium requirement itself was remarkably diminished under the condition in which L-alanine and a certain purine nucleoside analog, adenosine or inosine, coexisted. The lost or diminished germinability observed in SDS-DTT-treated spores or 10LD mutant spores may be attributed to the loss of calcium associated with the spore integuments.

Abstract
The MR imaging and CT findings of corpus callosal injury were analyzed in 32 of 224 patients with acute head injuries. MR imaging was more sensitive than CT in the detection of callosal injuries. All 9 hemorrhagic lesions were visualized on both MR imaging and CT. Fifteen of 23 nonhemorrhagic lesions were not visualized on CT, although all nonhemorrhagic lesions were visualized on MR imaging. Twenty-four lesions of the corpus callosum were located in the splenium, but no lesion was located in the rostrum. Diffuse axonal shear injuries were visualized in 25 patients with callosal injury as associated traumatic lesions. Twenty-three patients with callosal injury had low initial Glasgow Coma Scale scores (less than 9), but 9 patients had high scores. Associated diffuse axonal shear injuries, especially in the brain stem could be a possible explanation for this difference. MR imaging is useful to detect traumatic lesions of the corpus callosum.

Abstract
The nucleotide sequence of the import precursor of subunit b of human H(+)-ATP synthase has been determined from a recombinant cDNA clone isolated by screening a human kidney cDNA library with a cDNA for rat subunit b as a probe. The sequence was composed of 1,134 nucleotides including a coding region for the import precursor of subunit b and noncoding regions on the 5'- and 3'-sides. The import precursor of subunit b and its mature polypeptide deduced from the open reading frame were found to consist of 256 and 214 amino acid residues with molecular weights of 28,893 and 24,610, respectively. The presequence of 42 amino acids could be the import signal peptide for directing the protein into the mitochondrial matrix.

Abstract
A novel, simple, and rapid preparative method for purification of rat liver H(+)-ATP synthase by anion-exchange HPLC was developed. The H(+)-ATP synthase purified had higher ATPase activity in the absence of added phospholipids than any preparation reported previously, and this activity was completely inhibited by oligomycin. When reconstituted into proteoliposomes, the H(+)-ATP synthase showed an ATP-dependent 8-anilinonaphthalene-1-sulfonate response and ATP-Pi exchange activity, both of which were also completely inhibited by oligomycin and an uncoupler, indicating the intactness of the H(+)-ATP synthase. An immunochemical study and a labeling experiment with N,N'-[14C]dicyclohexylcarbodiimide ([14C]DCCD) demonstrated the presence of chargerin II ( a product of mitochondrial A6L DNA) and DCCD-binding protein (subunit c) in the complex. The subunits of the complex were separated into 11 main fractions by reverse-phase HPLC, and 3 of them and the delta subunit in F1 were partially sequenced. A search for sequence homologies indicated that these components were subunit b, coupling factor 6, subunit delta, and subunit epsilon. This is the first report of the existence of subunit b, factor 6, and chargerin II in H(+)-ATP synthase purified from rat liver mitochondria.

Abstract
Previous studies suggested that the hydrophobic protein chargerin II, which is encoded in the A6L of mitochondrial DNA, may have a key role in the energy transduction by mitochondrial H(+)-ATP synthase because an antibody against chargerin II inhibited ATP synthesis and ATP-Pi exchange, in an energy-dependent fashion. In the present work, the contents of chargerin II in the H(+)-ATP synthase purified from rat liver mitochondria and in submitochondrial particles were determined by radioimmunoassay. Results showed that the H(+)-ATP synthase contained chargerin II in a molar ratio of one to one. This is the first report on the stoichiometry of the A6L-product in mitochondrial H(+)-ATP synthase.

Abstract
Previous studies suggested that the hydrophobic protein chargerin II, which is encoded in the unidentified reading frame A6L of mitochondrial DNA (URFA6L), may have a key role in the energy transduction by mitochondrial ATP synthase because an antibody against chargerin II inhibited ATP synthesis and ATP-Pi exchange, in an energy-dependent fashion. In the present work, the orientation of chargerin II in Fo of the ATP synthase of rat liver mitochondria was examined using antibodies against peptides of chargerin II. Results showed that its N-terminal region (about 8 amino acid residues) was exposed on the surface of the C-side of Fo, but its C-terminal and charge-cluster regions were buried in Fo.

Abstract
Previous studies showed that a hydrophobic protein called chargerin II may have a key role in energy transduction of oxidative phosphorylation, since antibody against chargerin II labeled with monoazide ethidium inhibited ATP synthesis, ATP-Pi exchange, and reversed electron flow from succinate to NAD coupled with succinate oxidation by O2. In the present work, unlabeled chargerin II was purified from intact rat liver mitochondria by high performance liquid chromatography. The purified preparation of chargerin II, which was a single protein as judged by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and Western blotting, was digested with lysylendopeptidase. The digest was separated on a reverse-phase column into five peptides, which all cross-reacted with the antibody against chargerin II, indicating that they were fragments of chargerin II. The sequences of two of these peptides (a total of 12 amino acids) were determined and found to be highly homologous with the sequence of the carboxyl-terminal peptide of the putative polypeptide encoded by the unidentified reading frame A6L (URFA6L) of mammalian mitochondrial DNA. The amino acid compositions of the purified preparation of chargerin II were in good accord with those of the putative product of the URFA6L. Thus, we concluded that chargerin II is encoded by the URFA6L. This is the first demonstration that the URFA6L product was identified in rat liver mitochondria and purified from the membranes.

Abstract
Antibody against chargerin II [product of the unidentified reading frame A6L (URFA6L) of mitochondrial DNA] inhibited the ATP-Pi exchange reaction and reversed electron flow from succinate to NAD in mitoplasts (inner membrane plus matrix). The antibody against chargerin II caused greater inhibition on incubation with mitoplasts in the energized than the nonenergized state, suggesting that redox reactions are coupled with a conformational change of chargerin II. The present findings showed that chargerin II, the URFA6L product, may have a key role in energy transduction of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation.

Abstract
Laser-excited Raman spectra were examined in lyophilized spores of Bacillus cereus. In a comparison of the spectrum of the dormant spore with that of the germinated spore, we found several Raman bands which occurred in the former but not in the latter. Among these Raman bands, the 1,573, 1,395, 1,017, 822, and 662 cm-1 bands were assigned to the vibrational frequencies of calcium dipicolinate (CaDPA). No Raman bands and peaks due to dipicolinic acid (H2DPA) were observed. This Raman evidence indicates that CaDPA is the predominant DPA species in this spore. We also proposed a tentative assignment for other vibrational frequencies due to several components of the spore.

Abstract
Purine riboside and some of its analogs were tested for their ability to induce germination of Bacillus cereus T spores. Hypoxanthine and adenine showed no germination-inducing activity either in the present or absence of D-ribose or its phosphorylated derivatives. Purine riboside and 18 analogs with modified purine base were all able to induce germination of the spores to various extents. In contrast to this, the requirement for the sugar moiety in the purine riboside appeared to be more stringent. Only those nucleosides that contained either D-ribose or deoxy-D-ribose, and certain species of azole derivatives such as 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide covalently linked to the C(1') of the sugar actively induced germination.

Triphenyltetrazolium and its derivatives are anisotropic inhibitors of energy transduction in oxidative phosphorylation in rat liver mitochondria. BIOCHIMICA ET BIOPHYSICA ACTA 1983; 725:1-9. Abstract
Triphenyltetrazolium and its derivatives inhibited energy transduction in mitochondria but not in submitochondrial particles, which are inside-out relative to the membranes of mitochondria. Triphenyltetrazolium incorporated into the inside of submitochondrial particles inhibited ATP synthesis in the particles. Triphenyltetrazolium also inhibited the reduction of NAD by succinate coupled with oxidation of succinate by O2 and hydrolysis of ATP. Energization of mitochondrial inner membranes with succinate and with ATP induced sites on the membranes for triphenyltetrazolium and its derivatives. The maximum amounts of energy-dependent binding sites for triphenyltetrazolium on membranes energized with succinate and ATP, respectively, were 14 and 4 nmol/mg protein. Triphenyltetrazolium also induced H+ ejection from the energized membranes. The maximum amounts of H+ ejection from membranes energized with succinate and ATP, respectively, were 4 and 2.4 nmol/mg protein. Triphenyltetrazolium also decreased the membrane potential up to about half the control value and caused shrinkage of mitochondria in an energy-dependent fashion. Comparison of the Hammett's sigma constants of triphenyltetrazolium derivatives with various substituents on the 3-benzene ring showed that lower concentrations of triphenyltetrazolium derivatives with a stronger positive charge were required for inhibition of energy transduction. The present findings show that triphenyltetrazolium and its derivatives act as anisotropic inhibitors of energy transduction by binding to negative charges created on the outer side (C-side) of energized mitochondria, and that the positive charge of these inhibitors is one of important factors for their inhibitory activity. These negative charges may be an essential part of the H+ pump.

Abstract
Rhodamine 6G inhibited ATP hydrolysis by oligomycin-sensitive ATPase, purified from rat liver mitochondria, in good accord with the dose-response curve for its inhibition of energy transduction of ATP synthesis in mitochondria, but it did not inhibit ATP hydrolysis by purified F1. Rhodamine 6G also inhibited both H+-ejections from mitochondria energized with respiratory substrates and with ATP. The present findings show that the inhibitory effect of rhodamine 6G on energy transduction is not due to a modification of the transport system for adenine nucleotides, Pi, and respiratory substrates, and that the inhibition sites of rhodamine 6G are on components related with H+-ejection by redox components and also on F0.

Abstract
Tetraphenylarsonium (TPA+) inhibited energy transduction in oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria but not in submitochondrial particles, which are inside-out relative to the membranes of mitochondria. TPA+ incorporated into the inside of submitochondrial particles inhibited ATP synthesis in the particles. TPA+ also inhibited the reduction of NAD by succinate coupled with oxidation of succinate by O2 and hydrolysis of ATP. Energization of mitochondrial inner membranes with succinate and with ATP induced binding sites on the membranes for TPA+. The amounts of energy-dependent binding sites for TPA+ on mitochondria energized with succinate and with ATP, respectively, were 90 and 13 nmol/mg of protein. TPA+ also caused shrinkage of mitochondria energized with succinate and with ATP in an energy-dependent fashion. The energy-dependent binding of TPA+, TPA+-induced H+-ejection, TPA+-induced shrinkage of mitochondria, and TPA+-induced inhibition of energy transduction occurred in parallel. The present findings show that TPA+ inhibits energy transduction by binding to negative charges created on lipophilic domains near the surface of the outer side (C-side) of the mitochondrial inner membranes, and that it has no inhibitory activity on the inner side (M-side) of the membranes.

Delayed germination of Bacillus cereus T spores after treatment with trichloroacetic acid and their reactivation by heating. Microbiol Immunol 1980; 24:291-8. Abstract
Treatment of Bacillus cereus T spores with trichloroacetic acid delayed their germination. The extent of retardation depended on the concentration of trichloroacetic acid, and the temperature, pH and duration of treatment. The effect was completely reversed by subsequent heating, and this restoration of germination also depended on the temperature and duration of heat treatment. Fourteen compounds were examined for their ability to suppress germination of spores. The halogenated fatty acids tested, such as trifluoro-, tribromo-, and dichloroacetic acid, caused suppression of germination, whereas other compounds, i.e., free fatty acids and amino acids, did not. It is concluded that the charge distribution of fatty acid molecules is important for their effect in suppressing germination of spores.
