Toward a model of learning innovation integration: TPACK-SAMR based analysis of the introduction of a digital learning environment in three Russian universities

Digitalisation is penetrating higher education (HE) in Russia. The study explores how three Russian universities have been integrating the Skyes digital learning platform to transform English as a foreign language (EFL) educational practices. The article outlines the main characteristics of the platform, recounts the steps in adopting the technology and addresses the emerging changes to learning and teaching. Students' and teachers' perceptions are examined to review the implementation process. The research is designed as a case study; the methods used are semi-structured interviews and online questionnaires. The study framework combines the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) model and the Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition (SAMR) model for a holistic approach to investigating innovation integration in a university setting. TPACK is used to analyse the changes associated with teachers' knowledge of technology, pedagogy and content. SAMR helps to reflect on the current use of the platform showcasing technology integration along substitution, augmentation and modification levels. Based on the findings, the paper discusses the factors influencing the implementation of the Skyes platform and proposes recommendations for its successful integration; they highlight the importance of motivation, feedback both from teachers and students, clear assessment of the learning outcomes, TPACK transformation plan and alignment between the innovation and educational regulations.

Allografts and xenografts for right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction in Ross patients

OBJECTIVES

Pulmonary allografts (AG) are the gold standard for right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) reconstruction during the Ross procedure. However, there is limited availability of AG in some countries, and the use of alternative grafts for RVOT reconstruction remains controversial. This study aimed to compare the rates of freedom from RVOT graft dysfunction for AG and diepoxide-treated pericardial xenografts (DPXG).

METHODS

Between 1998 and 2015, 793 adult patients underwent the Ross procedure in our centre. Using propensity score matching, the clinical outcomes and echocardiographic results of AG and DPXG were compared.

RESULTS

Propensity score matching resulted in 2 groups (AG and DPXG) of 122 patients each. No difference was found in early mortality (2.5%) in both groups. The freedom from RVOT graft dysfunction curves were comparable between the AG and DPXG groups (P = 0.186) and the 8-year rates of freedom from graft dysfunction were 91.8% and 82.2%, respectively. The survival rates at 8 years were 90.5% and 90.1%, and the rates of freedom from RVOT reintervention at 8 years were 100% and 96.8% for the AG and DPXG groups, respectively. At discharge and follow-up, transprosthetic gradients were significantly higher in the DPXG group. The rate of the RVOT gradient progression was also higher in the DPXG group than in the AG group (1.80 ± 0.06 vs 1.39 ± 0.04 mmHg/year, P < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

There was no difference in freedom from RVOT graft dysfunction by 8 years when using AG and DPXG in adult Ross patients, nor in survival and freedom from RVOT conduit reintervention. Long-term results need further evaluation.

Hitomi X-ray studies of Giant Radio Pulses from the Crab pulsar

To search for giant X-ray pulses correlated with the giant radio pulses (GRPs) from the Crab pulsar, we performed a simultaneous observation of the Crab pulsar with the X-ray satellite Hitomi in the 2 - 300 keV band and the Kashima NICT radio observatory in the 1.4 - 1.7 GHz band with a net exposure of about 2 ks on 25 March 2016, just before the loss of the Hitomi mission. The timing performance of the Hitomi instruments was confirmed to meet the timing requirement and about 1,000 and 100 GRPs were simultaneously observed at the main and inter-pulse phases, respectively, and we found no apparent correlation between the giant radio pulses and the X-ray emission in either the main or inter-pulse phases. All variations are within the 2 sigma fluctuations of the X-ray fluxes at the pulse peaks, and the 3 sigma upper limits of variations of main- or inter-pulse GRPs are 22% or 80% of the peak flux in a 0.20 phase width, respectively, in the 2 - 300 keV band. The values become 25% or 110% for main or inter-pulse GRPs, respectively, when the phase width is restricted into the 0.03 phase. Among the upper limits from the Hitomi satellite, those in the 4.5-10 keV and the 70-300 keV are obtained for the first time, and those in other bands are consistent with previous reports. Numerically, the upper limits of main- and inter-pulse GRPs in the 0.20 phase width are about (2.4 and 9.3) ×10^-11 erg cm^-2, respectively. No significant variability in pulse profiles implies that the GRPs originated from a local place within the magnetosphere and the number of photon-emitting particles temporally increases. However, the results do not statistically rule out variations correlated with the GRPs, because the possible X-ray enhancement may appear due to a > 0.02% brightening of the pulse-peak flux under such conditions.

Effect of the Helix-Coil Transition in Bovine Skin Gelatin on Its Associative Phase Separation with Lysozyme

It is known that the formation of electrostatic polyelectrolyte complexes can induce conformational changes in the interacting macromolecules. However, the opposite effect, namely, that of the helix-coil transition of one of the interacting polyelectrolytes on its associative phase separation with another polyelectrolyte and the possible phase transitions in such systems, has not been determined. Atomic force and confocal laser scanning microscopy, phase analysis, dynamic and electrophoretic light scattering, turbidimetry, absorption, and fluorescence measurements as well as differential scanning calorimetry and rheology were used to study the effect of the helix-coil transition in bovine skin gelatin (Gel) on its associative phase separation with hen egg white lysozyme (Lys) at different temperatures (18-40 °C) and various Lys/Gel weight ratios (0.01-100) at low ionic strength (0.01) and pH 7.0. The effects of the main variables on the phase state, the phase diagram, and the main complexation and binding parameters as well as the temperature and enthalpy of the helix-coil transition of Gel within the complexes were investigated. Associative phase separation is observed only for the system with Gel in the helix state. Effective charge and structure and the solution and rheological behavior of the formed complexes proved to be dependent on the [An^-]/[Cat⁺] charge ratio. The localization of Lys within the complex particles has irregular character without the formation of a single center of binding. The binding of Lys with Gel does not lead to the disruption of its tertiary structure or to an appreciable change in the thermodynamic parameters of the thermal transitions of Lys. Gel in the coil state interacts only weakly with Lys, forming water-soluble complex associates. It is suggested that the Voorn-Overbeek model could potentially describe the stronger binding and phase separation in the case of Gel in the helix state.

Smoking and associated factors among adolescents in Tallinn, Helsinki and Moscow: a multilevel analysis

Aims: To investigate variations in smoking and associated factors on individual and aggregate level among adolescents in Tallinn (Estonia), Helsinki (Finland) and Moscow (the Russian Federation). Methods: The data was collected in Tallinn (N=1268 in Estonian and N=901 in Russian schools), in Helsinki (N=1396) and in Moscow (N=618) from pupils aged 13 - 18 by self-administered questionnaire. Multilevel analysis was used to estimate the possible effects of background characteristics, of the proximity of other smokers and the school context on the tobacco use of pupils. Results: The prevalence rate of smoking among girls in Russian schools in Tallinn (34.6%), among girls in Helsinki (39.5%), and in Moscow (32.1%) was higher than that among girls in Estonian schools in Tallinn (17.6%). Smoking was slightly less prevalent among boys in Helsinki (27.5%), compared to boys in Estonian (33.6%) and Russian (35.6%) schools in Tallinn, and to boys in Moscow (32.8%). Smoking increased with age. Multilevel analysis showed that smoking differed by school among pupils. Individual determinants of smoking as study site, grade, friends', siblings' and parental smoking behaved differently depending upon school. Friends and siblings' smoking showed interaction with study site to the smoking among girls. Conclusions: Strategies aimed at influencing smoking behaviour need to be directed not only towards the individual, but also towards the influences within the child's school environment.

Weight satisfaction and self-esteem among teenagers in Helsinki, Moscow and Tallinn

OBJECTIVE

Information on weight satisfaction in Eastern Europe is limited. This study compares relative weight, weight satisfaction and self-esteem of teenagers living in two post-Soviet capitals, Moscow and Tallinn, and a western capital Helsinki.

METHOD

Classroom surveys including data about weight and height, weight satisfaction and self-4 esteem among 15-18-year-old girls (n = 911) and boys (n = 650) collected in 1994-95.

RESULTS

Body mass index and self-esteem were highest in Helsinki. Nevertheless, feelings of over-weight were most common among Tallinn girls and feelings of over- and underweight among Muscovite girls. Boys were mostly satisfied with their current weight with no differences between cities. Low self-esteem was associated with feelings of overweight among girls and underweight among boys.

DISCUSSION

Somewhat unexpectedly, girls grown in non-western cultures were more dissatisfied with their weight than girls in Helsinki. These findings may partly be attributable to rapid economic and cultural transformations that were occurring in these countries during the study period.

Anxiety about environmental hazards among teenagers in Helsinki, Moscow and Tallinn

Comparative research of environmental attitudes has concentrated on adults of Western countries, whereas knowledge of environmental consciousness of East European people is modest. This article compares anxiety that teenagers in Helsinki, Moscow and Tallinn express about environmental hazards and their health effects. The data (Helsinki, N = 1396; Moscow, N = 618; Tallinn, N = 1268) were collected in schools by questionnaires from pupils between 13 and 18 years in 1994-1995. Air pollution, water pollution and survival of plant and animal species were considered most worrying environmental threats in every city. Environmental concern was usually highest in Moscow, but the effects of pollution on an individual's health worried Estonian teenagers most. The worry was most consistent in Moscow, where sex, class level or opinion of the state of one's own living environment did not usually have an effect on attitudes. Finnish girls and pupils in higher school classes were environmentally more conscious than boys or younger teenagers. In Tallinn, the sex and age differences in worry were smaller. Environmental worry seemed to have connections to a general sense of responsibility and risk behaviour such as heavy drinking and smoking. For all sites those pupils who often throw empty packages onto the street or into the nature expressed lower environmental concern than their more responsible peers. The differences of worry between the cities were difficult to interpret, but the greater total concern of young Muscovites may be part of their general social anxiety, which is associated with the instability of the Russian society.

Social patterning of ill health in Helsinki and Moscow: results from a comparative survey in 1991

Social inequalities in health are widely documented in the western countries including Finland, but research on Russia has so far been scarce. This article compares self-reported ill health of men and women and its social patterning in Helsinki and Moscow on the basis of a survey. The data (Helsinki N = 824, Moscow N = 545) were collected by mailed questionnaires in 1991. The Muscovites fared more poorly on perceived and psychological health, but the differences in self-reported morbidity (prevalence of chronic illnesses) between the cities were quite small. The sex differentials were greater in Moscow and Muscovite women had the poorest health of all. Education, family income and occupation had the most consistent associations with perceived health and morbidity among Helsinki women and the weakest among Muscovite women. With few exceptions, men of both cities fell between these groups. The differences in health between the cities were smaller in groups with low education. Thus, the role of education as a protective resource was more pronounced in Helsinki, and more notably among women. The possibility of a different impact of social stratification on health in a transitional socialist society compared to a western market economy is discussed.
