Colloidal Synthesis of P-Type Zn3 As2 Nanocrystals

Zinc pnictides, particularly Zn3 As2 , hold significant promise for optoelectronic applications owing to their intrinsic p-type behavior and appropriate bandgaps. However, despite the outstanding properties of colloidal Zn3 As2 nanocrystals, research in this area is lacking because of the absence of suitable precursors, occurrence of surface oxidation, and intricacy of the crystal structures. In this study, a novel and facile solution-based synthetic approach is presented for obtaining highly crystalline p-type Zn3 As2 nanocrystals with accurate stoichiometry. By carefully controlling the feed ratio and reaction temperature, colloidal Zn3 As2 nanocrystals are successfully obtained. Moreover, the mechanism underlying the conversion of As precursors in the initial phases of Zn3 As2 synthesis is elucidated. Furthermore, these nanocrystals are employed as active layers in field-effect transistors that exhibit inherent p-type characteristics with native surface ligands. To enhance the charge transport properties, a dual passivation strategy is introduced via phase-transfer ligand exchange, leading to enhanced hole mobilities as high as 0.089 cm2 V-1 s-1 . This study not only contributes to the advancement of nanocrystal synthesis, but also opens up new possibilities for previously underexplored p-type nanocrystal research.

Well-Balanced Ambipolar Charge Transport of Diketopyrrolepyrrole-Based Copolymers: Organic Field-Effect Transistors and High-Voltage Logic Applications

A poly (3,6-bis(thiophen-2-yl)-2,5-bis(2-decyltetradecyl)-2,5-dihydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione-co-(2,3-bis(phenyl)acrylonitrile)) (PDPADPP) copolymer, composed of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) and a cyano (nitrile) group with a vinylene spacer linking two benzene rings, is synthesized via a palladium-catalyzed Suzuki coupling reaction. The electrical performance of PDPADPP in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and circuits is investigated. The OFETs based on PDPADPP exhibit typical ambipolar transport characteristics, with the as-cast OFETs demonstrating low field-effect hole and electron mobility values of 0.016 and 0.004 cm2  V-1  s-1 , respectively. However, after thermal annealing at 240 °C, the OFETs exhibit improved transport characteristics with highly balanced ambipolar transport, showing average hole and electron mobility values of 0.065 and 0.116 cm2  V-1  s-1 , respectively. To verify the application of the PDPADPP OFETs in high-voltage logic circuits, compact modeling using the industry-standard small-signal Berkeley short-channel IGFET model (BSIM) is performed, and the logic application characteristics are evaluated. The circuit simulation results demonstrate excellent logic application performance of the PDPADPP-based ambipolar transistor and illustrate that the device annealed at 240 °C exhibits ideal circuit characteristics.

Dynamics of Macroeconomy, Medicaid, and State Fiscal Conditions: A Role of Medicaid Expansion

Background

One of the main concerns of state governments about Medicaid expansion is the potential increase in state fiscal burden following the rise in enrollments. In previous literature, limited attention has been paid to the effect of macroeconomic changes, which are closely linked to Medicaid enrollments, in understanding the impact of Medicaid expansion on a state. To narrow the gap, this study establishes a synthetic model to represent the transmission channel from an unemployment shock to the Medicaid program and state expenditures.

Methods

The panel vector autoregression (VAR) model is adopted for the empirical analysis using annual data from 2010 to 2019 for 50 US states and D.C. The unit root and Granger causality tests are conducted to check the model's appropriateness. The estimated results are analyzed by using impulse response functions.

Results

A sudden increase in the unemployment rate will raise the number of Medicaid enrollees and the state Medicaid expenditure, but the impact on the overall state budget is not clear. States that adopt Medicaid expansion will encounter surges in enrollment and increasing Medicaid expenditure during the economic recession, while the non-expansion states will only have moderate enrollment increases. However, an increased budgetary burden per new enrollees will not be significant at its level.

Conclusion

Medicaid expansion will allow more people to benefit from the public health insurance program during an economic recession while the impact on states' fiscal burden will be moderate.

Open-Air Testing of Dual-Comb Time-of-Flight Measurement

We configured a long-distance ranging apparatus to test the principle of dual-comb time-of-flight measurement using ultrashort lasers. Emphasis was given to the evaluation of open-air performance quantitatively in terms of the measurement resolution and stability. The test results revealed that our dual-comb asynchronous optical pulse sampling permits micrometer-resolved ranging with a repeatability of 2.05 μm over a 648 m distance in dry weather conditions. Further atmospheric effects were evaluated in three different weather conditions with corresponding Allan deviations. Finally, the capability of simultaneous determination of multiple targets was verified with the potential of advanced industrial applications, such as manufacturing, surveying, metrology, and geodesy.

Second Data Release from the European Pulsar Timing Array: Challenging the Ultralight Dark Matter Paradigm

Pulsar Timing Array experiments probe the presence of possible scalar or pseudoscalar ultralight dark matter particles through decade-long timing of an ensemble of galactic millisecond radio pulsars. With the second data release of the European Pulsar Timing Array, we focus on the most robust scenario, in which dark matter interacts only gravitationally with ordinary baryonic matter. Our results show that ultralight particles with masses 10^{-24.0}  eV≲m≲10^{-23.3}  eV cannot constitute 100% of the measured local dark matter density, but can have at most local density ρ≲0.3  GeV/cm^{3}.

Extremely Electron-Withdrawing Lewis-Paired CN Groups for Organic p-Dopants

P-type chemical doping (p-doping) is a key technique to modulate the optical, electrical, and electronic properties of organic semiconductors. However, typical functional groups in organic p-dopants have insufficient electron-withdrawing strength, and the inevitable diffusion of dopants in host matrices degrades doping stabilities. Herein, we utilize extremely electron-withdrawing Lewis-paired CN groups as a new class of building blocks for designing unprecedentedly strong organic p-dopants with excellent doping stability. Various Lewis acids are paired with CN-functionalized conjugated molecules in the solution state, which strengthens the electron-withdrawing properties of CN groups almost twofold. The large dopants afford outstanding doping stability against continuous heating and long-term atmospheric exposure, which is promising for practical applications in devices. Given the broad applicability of this simple combinatorial approach, it may impact many fields of (opto)electronics.

Feasibility study of computed tomography texture analysis for evaluation of canine primary adrenal gland tumors

Objective

This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of computed tomography (CT) texture analysis for distinguishing canine adrenal gland tumors and its usefulness in clinical decision-making.

Materials and methods

The medical records of 25 dogs with primary adrenal masses who underwent contrast CT and a histopathological examination were retrospectively reviewed, of which 12 had adenomas (AAs), 7 had adenocarcinomas (ACCs), and 6 had pheochromocytomas (PHEOs). Conventional CT evaluation of each adrenal gland tumor included the mean, maximum, and minimum attenuation values in Hounsfield units (HU), heterogeneity of the tumor parenchyma, and contrast enhancement (type, pattern, and degree), respectively, in each phase. In CT texture analysis, precontrast and delayed-phase images of 18 adrenal gland tumors, which could be applied for ComBat harmonization were used, and 93 radiomic features (18 first-order and 75 second-order statistics) were extracted. Then, ComBat harmonization was applied to compensate for the batch effect created by the different CT protocols. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) for each significant feature was used to evaluate the diagnostic performance of CT texture analysis.

Results

Among the conventional features, PHEO showed significantly higher mean and maximum precontrast HU values than ACC (p < 0.05). Eight second-order features on the precontrast images showed significant differences between the adrenal gland tumors (p < 0.05). However, none of them were significantly different between AA and PHEO, or between precontrast images and delayed-phase images. This result indicates that ACC exhibited more heterogeneous and complex textures and more variable intensities with lower gray-level values than AA and PHEO. The correlation, maximal correlation coefficient, and gray level non-uniformity normalized were significantly different between AA and ACC, and between ACC and PHEO. These features showed high AUCs in discriminating ACC and PHEO, which were comparable or higher than the precontrast mean and maximum HU (AUC = 0.865 and 0.860, respectively).

Conclusion

Canine primary adrenal gland tumor differentiation can be achieved with CT texture analysis on precontrast images and may have a potential role in clinical decision-making. Further prospective studies with larger populations and cross-validation are warranted.

Investigating the interfacial properties of halide perovskite/TiOx heterostructures for versatile photocatalytic reactions under sunlight

Heterostructures of metal halide perovskites and TiO_x are efficient photocatalytic materials owing to the combination of the advantages of each compound, specifically the high absorption coefficients and long charge-carrier lifetimes of perovskites, and efficient photocatalytic activity of TiO_x. However, chemical reduction of CO₂ using PNC/TiO_x heterostructures without organic solvents has not been reported yet. Here, we report the first solvent-free reduction of CO₂ using amorphous TiO_x with embedded colloidal perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs). The combination was obtained by carrying out hydrolysis of titanium butoxide (TBOT) on the PNC surface without high-temperature calcination. We proposed a mechanism involving photoexcited electrons being transferred from PNCs to TBOT, enabling photocatalytic reactions using TiO_x under visible-light excitation. We demonstrated efficient visible-light-driven photocatalytic reactions at PNC/TiO_x interfaces, specifically with a CO production rate of 30.43 μmol g^-1 h^-1 and accelerated degradation of organic pollutants under natural sunlight. Our work has provided a simple path toward both efficient CO₂ reduction and photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes.

Mechanical, chemical, and bio-recycling of biodegradable plastics: A review

The extensive use of petroleum-based non-biodegradable plastics for various applications has led to global concerns regarding the severe environmental issues associated with them. However, biodegradable plastics are emerging as green alternatives to petroleum-based non-biodegradable plastics. Biodegradable plastics, which include bio-based and petroleum-based biodegradable polymers, exhibit advantageous properties such as renewability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity. Furthermore, certain biodegradable plastics are compatible with existing recycling streams intended for conventional plastics and are biodegradable in controlled and/or predicted environments. Recycling biodegradable plastics before their end-of-life (EOL) degradation further enhances their sustainability and reduces their carbon footprint. Since the production of biodegradable plastic is increasing and these materials will coexist with conventional plastics for many years to come, it is essential to identify the optimal recycling options for each of the most prevalent biodegradable plastics. The substitution of virgin biodegradable plastics by their recyclates leads to higher savings in the primary energy demand and reduces global warming impact. This review covers the current state of the mechanical, chemical, and bio-recycling of post-industrial and post-consumer waste of biodegradable plastics and their related composites. The effects of recycling on the chemical structure and thermomechanical properties of biodegradable plastics are also reported. Additionally, the improvement of biodegradable plastics by blending them with other polymers and nanoparticles is comprehensively discussed. Finally, the status of bioplastic usage, life cycle assessment, EOL management, bioplastic market, and the challenges associated with the recyclability of biodegradable plastics are addressed. This review gives comprehensive insights into the recycling processes that may be employed for the recycling of biodegradable plastics.

Development of Alkylthiazole-Based Novel Thermoelectric Conjugated Polymers for Facile Organic Doping

In this study, we developed two novel conjugated polymers that can easily be doped with F4TCNQ organic dopants using a sequential doping method and then studied their organic thermoelectric (OTE) properties. In particular, to promote the intermolecular ordering of OTE polymers in the presence of the F4TCNQ dopant, alkylthiazole-based conjugated building blocks with highly planar backbone structures were synthesized and copolymerized. All polymers showed strong molecular ordering and edge-on orientation in the film state, even in the presence of the F4TCNQ organic dopant. Thus, the sequential doping process barely changed the molecular ordering of the polymer films while making efficient molecular doping. In addition, the doping efficiency was improved in the more π-extended polymer backbones with thienothiophene units due to the emptier space in the polymer lamellar structure to locate ionized F4TCNQ. Moreover, the study of organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) revealed that higher hole mobility in OTFTs was the key to increasing the electrical conductivity of OTE devices fabricated using the sequential doping method.

Anticoagulant treatment patterns and thromboembolic events by tumor type among patients with VTE and cancer

Background

Patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE) and cancer are at higher risk of adverse outcomes (mortality, recurrent VTE etc.) versus patients with cancer alone; as such, clinical guidelines recommend anticoagulant treatment for patients with VTE and cancer. There is limited real world data about how anticoagulant treatment and thromboembolic outcomes differ by tumor type in patients with VTE and cancer. Understanding such differences may help identify appropriate anticoagulant treatment for specific tumor types.

Purpose

To describe anticoagulant treatment patterns and thromboembolic outcomes by tumor type among patients with VTE and cancer.

Methods

Patients with VTE and cancer age ≥65 were identified from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Medicare database from 1/1/2014–12/31/2019. Patients were required to be enrolled for ≥6-months prior to their first VTE diagnosis (index) and without evidence of other conditions requiring anticoagulant (i.e., atrial fibrillation) prior to index. Cancer status and tumor type were identified from SEER or Medicare database in the 6-months prior through 30-days post VTE. This analysis focused on the following specific tumor types: high risk (brain, pancreas, and stomach) and common tumor types (breast, and prostate). Patients treated with an anticoagulant within 30-days after index were included in the final population. Major bleeding (MB) and recurrent VTE events were measured during follow-up (index date through earliest of disenrollment, death or 12/31/2019).

Results

A total of 3,546 anticoagulated patients with VTE and cancer of interest met all study criteria (breast [n=1,197], prostate [n=849], pancreatic [n=995], brain [n=248] and stomach [n=257] cancer). Patient mean age ranged from 73 (brain) to 76 (stomach) at index. Anticoagulant treatment patterns varied by tumor type (Figure 1). LMWH was more likely to be used in the 3 high risk tumor types whereas apixaban and rivaroxaban were more likely to be used in the 2 common tumor types. The incidence rate of recurrent VTE and major bleeding events also varied among different tumor types: ranging from 1.4 (breast) to 6.4 (pancreatic) per 100 person-years for recurrent VTE and from 4.3 (prostate) to 15.1 (pancreatic) per 100 person-years for major bleeding (Figure 2).

Conclusion

There are notable variations in anticoagulant treatment patters and the risks of major bleeding and recurrent VTE events by tumor type among patients with VTE and cancer. Further research is needed to understand which anticoagulant treatment option is more appropriate for VTE patients with specific tumor type.

Volumetric Measurement of Relative CBV Using T1-Perfusion-Weighted MRI with High Temporal Resolution Compared with Traditional T2*-Perfusion-Weighted MRI in Postoperative Patients with High-Grade Gliomas

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

T1-PWI with high temporal resolution may provide a reliable relative CBV value as a valid alternative to T2*-PWI under increased susceptibility. The purpose of this study was to assess the technical and clinical performance of T1-relative CBV in patients with postoperative high-grade gliomas.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Forty-five MRIs of 34 patients with proved high-grade gliomas were included. In all MRIs, T1- and T2*-PWIs were both acquired and processed semiautomatically to generate relative CBV maps using a released commercial software. Lesion masks were overlaid on the relative CBV maps, followed by a histogram of the whole VOI. The intraclass correlation coefficient and Bland-Altman plots were used for quantitative and qualitative comparisons. Signal loss from both methods was compared using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test of zero voxel percentage. The MRIs were divided into a progression group (n = 20) and a nonprogression group (n = 14) for receiver operating characteristic curve analysis.

RESULTS

Fair intertechnique consistency was observed between the 90th percentiles of the T1- and T2*-relative CBV values (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.558, P < .001). T2*-PWI revealed a significantly higher percentage of near-zero voxels than T1-PWI (17.7% versus 3.1%, P < .001). There was no statistically significant difference between the area under the curve of T1- and T2*-relative CBV (0.811 versus 0.793, P = .835). T1-relative CBV showed 100% sensitivity and 57.1% specificity for the detection of progressive lesions.

CONCLUSIONS

T1-relative CBV demonstrated exquisite diagnostic performance for detecting progressive lesions in postoperative patients with high-grade gliomas, suggesting the potential role of T1-PWI as a valid alternative to the traditional T2*-PWI.

Attenuation of intrinsic aging of the skin via elimination of senescent dermal fibroblasts with senolytic drugs

BACKGROUND

Skin aging is caused by numerous factors that result in structural and functional changes in cutaneous components. Research has shown that senescent cells are known to accumulate in skin aging, however, the role of senescent cells in skin aging has not been defined.

OBJECTIVES

To elucidate the role of senescent cell in skin aging, we evaluated the effect of known senolytic drugs on senescent dermal fibroblasts.

METHODS

Primary human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) were induced to senescence by long-term passaging, UV irradiation, and H2O2 treatment. Cell viability was measured after treatment of ABT-263 and ABT-737 on HDFs. Young and aged hairless mice were intradermally injected with drugs or vehicle on the dorsal skin for 10 days. Skin specimens were obtained and reverse-transcription quantitative PCR, western blotting, and histological analysis were performed.

RESULTS

We found that ABT-263 and ABT-737 induced selective clearance of senescent dermal fibroblasts, regardless of the method of senescence induction. Aged mouse skin treated with ABT-263 or ABT-737 showed increased collagen density, epidermal thickness, and proliferation of keratinocytes, as well as decreased senescence-associated secretory phenotypes, such as MMP-1 and IL-6.

CONCLUSIONS

Taken together, our results indicate that selective clearance of senescent skin cells can attenuate and improve skin aging phenotypes and that senolytic drugs may be of potential use as new therapeutic agents for treating aging of the skin.

Intraindividual Comparison between the Contrast-Enhanced Golden-Angle Radial Sparse Parallel Sequence and the Conventional Fat-Suppressed Contrast-Enhanced T1-Weighted Spin-Echo Sequence for Head and Neck MRI

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

The golden-angle radial sparse parallel-volumetric interpolated breath-hold (GRASP-VIBE) sequence is a recently introduced imaging technique with high resolution. This study compared the image quality between conventional fat-suppressed T1-weighted TSE and GRASP-VIBE after gadolinium enhancement in the head and neck region.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Data from 65 patients with clinical indications for head and neck MR imaging between September 2020 and January 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. Two radiologists assessed the overall image quality, overall artifacts, and image conspicuities in the oropharynx, hypopharynx, and cervical lymph nodes according to 5-point scores (best score: 5). Interobserver agreement was assessed using weighted κ statistics. The SNR and contrast-to-noise ratio were calculated and compared between the 2 sequences using a paired Wilcoxon signed rank test.

RESULTS

The analysis included 52 patients (mean age, 60 [SD, 14 ] years; male, 71.2% [37/52]) who were mostly diagnosed with head and neck malignancies (94.3% [50/52]). κ statistics ranged from slight agreement in cervical lymph node conspicuity (κ = 0.18) to substantial agreement in oropharyngeal mucosal conspicuity (κ = 0.80) (κ range, 0.18-0.80). Moreover, GRASP-VIBE demonstrated significantly higher mean scores in overall image quality (4.68 [SD, 0.41] versus 3.66 [SD, 0.73]), artifacts (4.47 [SD, 0.48] versus 3.58 [SD, 0.71]), oropharyngeal mucosal conspicuity (4.85 [SD, 0.41] versus 4.11 [SD, 0.79]), hypopharyngeal mucosal conspicuity (4.84 [SD, 0.34] versus 3.58 [SD, 0.81]), and cervical lymph node conspicuity (4.79 [SD, 0.32] versus 4.08 [SD, 0.64]) than fat-suppressed T1-weighted TSE (all, P < .001). Furthermore, GRASP-VIBE demonstrated a higher SNR (22.8 [SD, 11.5] versus 11.3 [SD, 5.6], P < .001) and contrast-to-noise ratio (4.7 [SD, 5.4] versus 2.3 [SD, 2.7], P = .059) than fat-suppressed T1-weighted TSE.

CONCLUSIONS

GRASP-VIBE provided better image quality with fewer artifacts than conventional fat-suppressed T1-weighted TSE for the head and neck regions.

Determination of in vitro dry matter, protein, and fiber digestibility and fermentability of novel corn coproducts for swine and ruminants

New processes are being used in some dry-grind ethanol plants in the United States and Brazil to improve ethanol yield and efficiency of production while also providing nutritionally enhanced corn coproducts compared with conventional corn distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS). The objectives of this study were to determine the chemical composition and in vitro digestibility of 5 conventional corn DDGS sources and 10 emerging novel corn coproducts for swine and ruminants, and compare coproducts produced using similar processes in the United States and Brazil. Chemical composition, on a dry matter (DM) basis, among the 15 coproducts ranged from 18.5% to 54.7% for crude protein (CP), 12.3% to 51.4% for neutral detergent fiber (NDF), 1.6% to 8.6% for acid detergent fiber, 4.7% to 12.3% for ether extract, and 1.6% to 8.6% for ash. For swine, in vitro hydrolysis of DM and CP were greater (P < 0.01) for the three U.S. corn DDGS sources compared with the two Brazilian corn DDGS sources, but in vitro fermentability of DM was comparable (P > 0.05) among all sources except one U.S. DDGS source that had less fermentable DM. High-protein and yeast dried distillers grains (Ultramax, UM; StillPro, SP) coproducts also had comparable (P > 0.05) DM fermentability for swine, but UM coproducts had greater (P < 0.01) DM and CP hydrolysis compared with SP. High-protein distillers dried grains (HP-DDG) from Brazil had greater (P < 0.01) DM and CP hydrolysis, but less (P < 0.01) DM fermentability for swine than HP-DDG produced in the United States, using the same process. For ruminants, total DM digestibility was greater (P < 0.01) in conventional DDGS sources from the United States compared with the two DDGS sources from Brazil. Total protein digestibility for ruminants was comparable and above 81% for all coproducts except for a DDGS source from Brazil, a HP-DDG source from the United States, and a UM sample. Interestingly, the corn fiber + solubles coproduct had not only relatively high digestibility of NDF (67.9%), DM (91.6%), and total CP (81.9%) for ruminants, but it also had relatively high total tract digestibility of DM (86.2%) and CP (69.9%) for swine. These results suggest that nutrient digestibility of conventional DDGS sources produced in the United States appear to be greater than corn Brazilian DDGS sources, but new process technologies being implemented in ethanol and coproduct production in both countries can enhance the nutritional value of corn coproducts for both swine and ruminants.

Interfacial Engineering at Quantum Dot-Sensitized TiO2 Photoelectrodes for Ultrahigh Photocurrent Generation

Metal oxide semiconductor/chalcogenide quantum dot (QD) heterostructured photoanodes show photocurrent densities >30 mA/cm² with ZnO, approaching the theoretical limits in photovoltaic (PV) cells. However, comparative performance has not been achieved with TiO₂. Here, we applied a TiO₂(B) surface passivation layer (SPL) on TiO₂/QD (PbS and CdS) and achieved a photocurrent density of 34.59 mA/cm² under AM 1.5G illumination for PV cells, the highest recorded to date. The SPL improves electron conductivity by increasing the density of surface states, facilitating multiple trapping/detrapping transport, and increasing the coordination number of TiO₂ nanoparticles. This, along with impeded electron recombination, led to enhanced collection efficiency, which is a major factor for performance. Furthermore, SPL-treated TiO₂/QD photoanodes were successfully exploited in photoelectrochemical water splitting cells, showing an excellent photocurrent density of 14.43 mA/cm² at 0.82 V versus the Reversible Hydrogen Electrode (RHE). These results suggest a new promising strategy for the development of high-performance photoelectrochemical devices.

Enhanced Stabilities and Production Yields of MAPbBr3 Quantum Dots and Their Applications as Stretchable and Self-Healable Color Filters

Organic-inorganic hybrid CH₃NH₃PbBr₃ (MAPbBr₃) perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) are considered as promising and cost-effective building blocks for various optoelectronic devices. However, during centrifugation for the purification of these PQDs, commonly used polar protic and aprotic non-solvents (e.g., methanol and acetone) can destroy the nanocrystal structure of MAPbBr₃ perovskites, which will significantly reduce the production yields and degrade the optical properties of the PQDs. This study demonstrates the use of methyl acetate (MeOAc) as an effective non-solvent for purifying as-synthesized MAPbBr₃ PQDs without causing severe damage, which facilitates attainment of stable PQD solutions with high production yields. The MeOAc-washed MAPbBr₃ PQDs maintain their high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields and crystalline structures for long periods in solution states. MeOAc undergoes a hydrolysis reaction in the presence of the PQDs, and the resulting acetate anions partially replace the original surface ligands without damaging the PQD cores. Time-resolved PL analysis reveals that the MeOAc-washed PQDs show suppressed non-radiative recombination and a longer PL lifetime than acetone-washed and methanol-washed PQDs. Finally, it is demonstrated that a composite of the MAPbBr₃ PQDs and a thermoplastic elastomer (polystyrene-block-polyisoprene-block-polystyrene) is feasible as a stretchable and self-healable green color filter for a white light-emitting diode device.

Bipolar Membranes to Promote Formation of Tight Ice-Like Water for Efficient and Sustainable Water Splitting

Bipolar membranes (BPMs) have recently received much attention for their potential to improve the water dissociation reaction (WDR) at their junction by utilizing catalysts. Herein, composite catalysts (Fe₂ O₃ @GO) comprising hematite nanoparticles (α-Fe₂ O₃ ) grown on 2D graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets are reported, which show unprecedentedly high water dissociation performance in the BPM. Furthermore, new catalytic roles in facilitating WDR at the catalyst-water interface are mechanistically elucidated. It is demonstrated that the partially dissociated bound water, formed by the strongly Lewis-acidic Fe atoms of the Fe₂ O₃ @GO catalyst, helps the "ice-like water" to become tighter, consequently resulting in weaker intramolecular OH bonds, which reduces activation barriers and thus significantly improves the WDR rate. Notably, Fe₂ O₃ @GO-incorporated BPM shows an extremely low water dissociation potential (0.89 V), compared to commercially available BPM (BP-1E, 1.13 V) at 100 mA cm^-2 , and it is quite close to the theoretical potential required for WDR (0.83 V). This performance reduces the required electrical energy consumption for water splitting by ≈40%, as compared to monopolar (Nafion 212 and Selemion AMV) membranes. These results can provide a new approach for the development of water dissociation catalysts and BPMs for realizing highly efficient water splitting systems.

Prediction of Human Papillomavirus Status and Overall Survival in Patients with Untreated Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Development and Validation of CT-Based Radiomics

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Human papillomavirus is a prognostic marker for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. We aimed to determine the value of CT-based radiomics for predicting the human papillomavirus status and overall survival in patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Eighty-six patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma were retrospectively collected and grouped into training (n = 61) and test (n = 25) sets. For human papillomavirus status and overall survival prediction, radiomics features were selected via a random forest-based algorithm and Cox regression analysis, respectively. Relevant features were used to build multivariate Cox regression models and calculate the radiomics score. Human papillomavirus status and overall survival prediction were assessed via the area under the curve and concordance index, respectively. The models were validated in the test and The Cancer Imaging Archive cohorts (n = 78).

RESULTS

For prediction of human papillomavirus status, radiomics features yielded areas under the curve of 0.865, 0.747, and 0.834 in the training, test, and validation sets, respectively. In the univariate Cox regression, the human papillomavirus status (positive: hazard ratio, 0.257; 95% CI, 0.09-0.7; P = .008), T-stage (≥III: hazard ratio, 3.66; 95% CI, 1.34-9.99; P = .011), and radiomics score (high-risk: hazard ratio, 3.72; 95% CI, 1.21-11.46; P = .022) were associated with overall survival. The addition of the radiomics score to the clinical Cox model increased the concordance index from 0.702 to 0.733 (P = .01). Validation yielded concordance indices of 0.866 and 0.720.

CONCLUSIONS

CT-based radiomics may be useful in predicting human papillomavirus status and overall survival in patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

Absolute laser ranging by time-of-flight measurement of ultrashort light pulses [Invited]

Ultrashort pulse lasers are emerging as an advanced tool of distance measurement, with their unique temporal and spectral characteristics being extended to diverse principles of absolute ranging and instrumentation. Here, a systematic methodology is presented for absolute ranging by means of the time-of-flight measurement of ultrashort light pulses using dual-comb asynchronous optical sampling. Based on an elaborate uncertainty analysis, influencing system parameters such as the pulse duration, repetition rate, and averaging time are optimized to achieve a sub-µm measurement accuracy. The absolute ranging system developed in this study demonstrates a combined standard uncertainty of 0.986 µm for a 0.5 ms averaging over a distance range of 3.0 m, with a further reduction to 0.056 µm when the averaging time is increased to 0.5 s. The outstanding performance leads to unprecedented multitarget applications: machine feed control with thermal error compensation in real time as well as the nondestructive inspection of multilens assembly in a production line.

Assessment of neovascularization during bone healing using contrast-enhanced ultrasonography in a canine tibial osteotomy model: a preliminary study

Blood perfusion of skeletal muscle and callus was evaluated using contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) in a canine osteotomy model to determine the applicability of CEUS in the assessment of neovascularization during fracture healing and to compare the vascular signals on CEUS between external skeletal fixation and cast-applied dogs. In 6 Beagle dogs, a simple transverse osteotomy was performed at the left tibial shaft and external skeletal fixation (n = 3) or a cast (n = 3) was applied. Radiography, power Doppler ultrasonography (power Doppler), and CEUS were performed until complete union was achieved. On CEUS, vascular changes were quantitatively evaluated by measuring peak intensity (PI) and time to PI in the soft tissue and callus and by counting the vascular signals. Vascular signals from the soft tissue were detected on power Doppler and CEUS on day 2. Significantly more vascular signals were detected by CEUS than by power Doppler. On CEUS, PI in the surrounding soft tissue was markedly increased after the fracture line appeared indistinctively changed on radiography in all dogs. In the cast-applied dogs, vascular signals from the periosteal and endosteal callus were detected on CEUS before mineralized callus was observed on radiography. CEUS was useful in assessing the vascularity of soft tissue and callus, particularly in indirect fracture healing, and provided indications of a normally healing fracture.

0047 The Change in Melatonin Rhythm Depending on Dementia Severity in Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) Patients

Introduction

In Alzheimer’s disease (AD), both sleep and circadian dysfunctions are commonly reported and these are associated with neurodegenerative change. Actually, it has been reported that changes in circadian rhythms in AD were apparently discrete from those seen in normal aging. Previous studies reported the delayed phase in the activity or core body temperature rhythms in severe AD patients compared to normal controls. However, it is unknown whether similar changes in melatonin rhythms occur in AD patients who were not severely demented. We aimed to compare melatonin rhythms depending on dementia severity in mild and moderate AD patients.

Methods

We recruited AD patients of mild or moderate degree who had the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score of 5 or greater and/or complained insomnia symptoms more than 3 times a week for a month. The patients were classified according to their Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) score into 3 groups (CDR=0.5, 1, 2). The dim light melatonin onset (DLMO) was determined from seven hourly saliva samples obtained in the laboratory prior to sleep onset measured by actigraphy. The phase angle between the DLMO and sleep onset (PA-SO), and that between the DLMO and midsleep time (PA-MST) were calculated. Each group included 13, 13 and 6 AD patients with the CDR score of 0.5, 1 and 2, respectively. The DLMO and PA were compared among the 3 groups, and correlation analyses of the DLMO and PA with the MMSE in the Korean version of CERAD Packet (MMSE-KC) scores were done in total patients.

Results

There was no significant difference in the DLMO and PA between the 3 groups. The MMSE-KC score was positively correlated with the DLMO and negatively correlated with the PA-MST.

Conclusion

There were no changes in melatonin rhythms according to dementia severity in mild and moderate AD patients with sleep complaints. However, our study showed that earlier melatonin phase was associated with more impaired cognitive function.

Korean Genome Project: 1094 Korean personal genomes with clinical information

We present the initial phase of the Korean Genome Project (Korea1K), including 1094 whole genomes (sequenced at an average depth of 31×), along with data of 79 quantitative clinical traits. We identified 39 million single-nucleotide variants and indels of which half were singleton or doubleton and detected Korean-specific patterns based on several types of genomic variations. A genome-wide association study illustrated the power of whole-genome sequences for analyzing clinical traits, identifying nine more significant candidate alleles than previously reported from the same linkage disequilibrium blocks. Also, Korea1K, as a reference, showed better imputation accuracy for Koreans than the 1KGP panel. As proof of utility, germline variants in cancer samples could be filtered out more effectively when the Korea1K variome was used as a panel of normals compared to non-Korean variome sets. Overall, this study shows that Korea1K can be a useful genotypic and phenotypic resource for clinical and ethnogenetic studies.

Efficient Debundling of Few-Walled Carbon Nanotubes by Wrapping with Donor-Acceptor Polymers for Improving Thermoelectric Properties

Organic thermoelectric (TE) materials have great potential as sustainable energy sources for powering flexible and wearable electronic devices via harvesting of human body heat. Recent advances in soluble conjugated polymer/carbon nanotube (CNT) composites have facilitated achievement of high TE power factors. However, the effects of conjugated polymers on the debundling and electrical percolation of CNTs and on the TE properties of their composites are not yet fully understood. Herein, we introduce a novel type of polymer/CNT composite composed of a donor-acceptor (D-A)-type polymer and few-walled CNTs (FWCNTs). Three kinds of D-A polymers are employed to disperse FWCNTs, and the photophysical, morphological, and TE properties of the resulting polymer/FWCNT composites are compared with those of composites composed of FWCNTs dispersed with conventional donor-only poly(3-hexylthiophene). The results reveal that the strong intermolecular interaction forces and high backbone planarity of the D-A polymers facilitate effective debundling of FWCNTs, which results in much smaller bundle sizes. Consequently, the D-A polymer/FWCNT composite films show superior electrical percolation and TE performances with improved power factors of up to 459 μW/mK². Finally, we demonstrate the feasibility of the D-A polymer/FWCNT composites for use in the fabrication of a flexible TE generator, which shows a maximum power output of 210 nW at a temperature gradient of 20 K.

Image Quality of Low-Dose Cerebral Angiography and Effectiveness of Clinical Implementation on Diagnostic and Neurointerventional Procedures for Intracranial Aneurysms

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Awareness of the potential for exposure to high doses of radiation from interventional radiologic procedures has increased. The purpose of this study was to evaluate image quality and dose reduction of low-dose cerebral angiography during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for intracranial aneurysms.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A retrospective review of 1137 prospectively collected patients between January 2012 and June 2014 was performed. Beginning in April 2013, a dose-reduction strategy was implemented. Subjective image-quality assessment of 506 standard and 540 low-dose cerebral angiography images was performed by 2 neuroradiologists using a 5-point scale and was tested using noninferiority statistics. Radiation dose-area product and air kerma of 1046 diagnostic and 317 therapeutic procedures for intracranial aneurysms were analyzed and compared between groups before (group 1) and after (group 2) clinical implementation of a dose-reduction strategy.

RESULTS

The image quality of the low-dose cerebral angiography was not inferior on the basis of results from the 2 readers. For diagnostic cerebral angiography, the mean dose-area product and air kerma were 140.8 Gy×cm² and 1.0 Gy, respectively, in group 1 and 82.0 Gy×cm² and 0.6 Gy in group 2 (P < .001, P < .001). For the neurointerventional procedure, the mean dose-area product and air kerma were 246.0 Gy×cm² and 3.7 Gy, respectively, in group 1 and 169.8 Gy×cm² and 3.3 Gy in group 2 (P < .001, P = .291).

CONCLUSIONS

With low-dose cerebral angiography, image quality was maintained, and implementation of dose-reduction strategies reduced radiation doses in patients undergoing diagnostic and neurointerventional procedures for intracranial aneurysms.

An artificial solid interphase with polymers of intrinsic microporosity for highly stable Li metal anodes

Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1) have an appropriate pore size to reduce the solvation number of Li ions in electrolytes. This unique pore structure of PIM-1 as a solid interphase can suppress transport of solvent and consequently unwanted chemical reactions at the interface of anodes, thereby extending the cycle life of Li metal anodes.

Effect of experimental infections of various Tembusu virus strains isolated from geese, ducks and chickens on ducklings

In order to compare the pathogenicity of different Tembusu virus (TMUV) strains from geese, ducks and chickens, 56 5-day-old Cherry Valley ducklings which were divided into 7 groups and infected intramuscularly with 7´105 PFU/ml per duck of six challenge virus stocks. The clinical signs, weight gain, mortality, macroscopic and microscopic lesions, virus loads in sera of 1, 3, 5, 7, 11 and 14 dpi and serum antibody titers were examined. The results showed that these viruses could make the young ducks sick, but the clinical signs differed with the different species-original strains. All the experimental groups lose markedly in weight gain compared to the control, but there were no obvious distinctions in weight gains, as well as macroscopic and microscopic lesions of dead ducks between the infected groups. However, the groups of waterfowl-derived strains (from geese and ducks) showed more serious clinical signs and higher relative expressions of virus loads in sera than those from chicken-derived. The mortality of waterfowl groups was 37.5%, and the greatest mortality of chicken groups was 12.5%. The serum antibodies of the geese-species group JS804 appeared earlier and were higher in the titers than others. Taken toghter, the pathogenicity of waterfowl-derived TMUV was more serious than chicken-derived TMUV and JS804 could be chosen as one TMUV vaccine strain to protect from the infection.
