Abstract
Galactic cosmic radiation (GCR) is an unavoidable risk to astronauts that may affect mission success. Male rodents exposed to 33-beam-GCR (33-GCR) show short-term cognitive deficits but reports on female rodents and long-term assessment is lacking. Here we asked: What are the longitudinal behavioral effects of 33-GCR on female mice? Also, can an antioxidant/anti-inflammatory compound mitigate the impact of 33-GCR? Mature (6-month-old) C57BL/6J female mice received the antioxidant CDDO-EA (400 µg/g of food) or a control diet (vehicle, Veh) for 5 days and either Sham-irradiation (IRR) or whole-body 33-GCR (0.75Gy) on the 4th day. Three-months post-IRR, mice underwent two touchscreen-platform tests: 1) location discrimination reversal (which tests behavior pattern separation and cognitive flexibility, two abilities reliant on the dentate gyrus) and 2) stimulus-response learning/extinction. Mice then underwent arena-based behavior tests (e.g. open field, 3-chamber social interaction). At the experiment end (14.25-month post-IRR), neurogenesis was assessed (doublecortin-immunoreactive [DCX+] dentate gyrus neurons). Female mice exposed to Veh/Sham vs. Veh/33-GCR had similar pattern separation (% correct to 1st reversal). There were two effects of diet: CDDO-EA/Sham and CDDO-EA/33-GCR mice had better pattern separation vs. their respective control groups (Veh/Sham, Veh/33-GCR), and CDDO-EA/33-GCR mice had better cognitive flexibility (reversal number) vs. Veh/33-GCR mice. Notably, one radiation effect/CDDO-EA countereffect also emerged: Veh/33-GCR mice had worse stimulus-response learning (days to completion) vs. all other groups, including CDDO-EA/33-GCR mice. In general, all mice show normal anxiety-like behavior, exploration, and habituation to novel environments. There was also a change in neurogenesis: Veh/33-GCR mice had fewer DCX+ dentate gyrus immature neurons vs. Veh/Sham mice. Our study implies space radiation is a risk to a female crew's longitudinal mission-relevant cognitive processes and CDDO-EA is a potential dietary countermeasure for space-radiation CNS risks.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE T1-PWI with high temporal resolution may provide a reliable relative CBV value as a valid alternative to T2*-PWI under increased susceptibility. The purpose of this study was to assess the technical and clinical performance of T1-relative CBV in patients with postoperative high-grade gliomas. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-five MRIs of 34 patients with proved high-grade gliomas were included. In all MRIs, T1- and T2*-PWIs were both acquired and processed semiautomatically to generate relative CBV maps using a released commercial software. Lesion masks were overlaid on the relative CBV maps, followed by a histogram of the whole VOI. The intraclass correlation coefficient and Bland-Altman plots were used for quantitative and qualitative comparisons. Signal loss from both methods was compared using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test of zero voxel percentage. The MRIs were divided into a progression group (n = 20) and a nonprogression group (n = 14) for receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. RESULTS Fair intertechnique consistency was observed between the 90th percentiles of the T1- and T2*-relative CBV values (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.558, P < .001). T2*-PWI revealed a significantly higher percentage of near-zero voxels than T1-PWI (17.7% versus 3.1%, P < .001). There was no statistically significant difference between the area under the curve of T1- and T2*-relative CBV (0.811 versus 0.793, P = .835). T1-relative CBV showed 100% sensitivity and 57.1% specificity for the detection of progressive lesions. CONCLUSIONS T1-relative CBV demonstrated exquisite diagnostic performance for detecting progressive lesions in postoperative patients with high-grade gliomas, suggesting the potential role of T1-PWI as a valid alternative to the traditional T2*-PWI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The golden-angle radial sparse parallel-volumetric interpolated breath-hold (GRASP-VIBE) sequence is a recently introduced imaging technique with high resolution. This study compared the image quality between conventional fat-suppressed T1-weighted TSE and GRASP-VIBE after gadolinium enhancement in the head and neck region. MATERIALS AND METHODS Data from 65 patients with clinical indications for head and neck MR imaging between September 2020 and January 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. Two radiologists assessed the overall image quality, overall artifacts, and image conspicuities in the oropharynx, hypopharynx, and cervical lymph nodes according to 5-point scores (best score: 5). Interobserver agreement was assessed using weighted κ statistics. The SNR and contrast-to-noise ratio were calculated and compared between the 2 sequences using a paired Wilcoxon signed rank test. RESULTS The analysis included 52 patients (mean age, 60 [SD, 14 ] years; male, 71.2% [37/52]) who were mostly diagnosed with head and neck malignancies (94.3% [50/52]). κ statistics ranged from slight agreement in cervical lymph node conspicuity (κ = 0.18) to substantial agreement in oropharyngeal mucosal conspicuity (κ = 0.80) (κ range, 0.18-0.80). Moreover, GRASP-VIBE demonstrated significantly higher mean scores in overall image quality (4.68 [SD, 0.41] versus 3.66 [SD, 0.73]), artifacts (4.47 [SD, 0.48] versus 3.58 [SD, 0.71]), oropharyngeal mucosal conspicuity (4.85 [SD, 0.41] versus 4.11 [SD, 0.79]), hypopharyngeal mucosal conspicuity (4.84 [SD, 0.34] versus 3.58 [SD, 0.81]), and cervical lymph node conspicuity (4.79 [SD, 0.32] versus 4.08 [SD, 0.64]) than fat-suppressed T1-weighted TSE (all, P < .001). Furthermore, GRASP-VIBE demonstrated a higher SNR (22.8 [SD, 11.5] versus 11.3 [SD, 5.6], P < .001) and contrast-to-noise ratio (4.7 [SD, 5.4] versus 2.3 [SD, 2.7], P = .059) than fat-suppressed T1-weighted TSE. CONCLUSIONS GRASP-VIBE provided better image quality with fewer artifacts than conventional fat-suppressed T1-weighted TSE for the head and neck regions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Human papillomavirus is a prognostic marker for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. We aimed to determine the value of CT-based radiomics for predicting the human papillomavirus status and overall survival in patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighty-six patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma were retrospectively collected and grouped into training (n = 61) and test (n = 25) sets. For human papillomavirus status and overall survival prediction, radiomics features were selected via a random forest-based algorithm and Cox regression analysis, respectively. Relevant features were used to build multivariate Cox regression models and calculate the radiomics score. Human papillomavirus status and overall survival prediction were assessed via the area under the curve and concordance index, respectively. The models were validated in the test and The Cancer Imaging Archive cohorts (n = 78). RESULTS For prediction of human papillomavirus status, radiomics features yielded areas under the curve of 0.865, 0.747, and 0.834 in the training, test, and validation sets, respectively. In the univariate Cox regression, the human papillomavirus status (positive: hazard ratio, 0.257; 95% CI, 0.09-0.7; P = .008), T-stage (≥III: hazard ratio, 3.66; 95% CI, 1.34-9.99; P = .011), and radiomics score (high-risk: hazard ratio, 3.72; 95% CI, 1.21-11.46; P = .022) were associated with overall survival. The addition of the radiomics score to the clinical Cox model increased the concordance index from 0.702 to 0.733 (P = .01). Validation yielded concordance indices of 0.866 and 0.720. CONCLUSIONS CT-based radiomics may be useful in predicting human papillomavirus status and overall survival in patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Awareness of the potential for exposure to high doses of radiation from interventional radiologic procedures has increased. The purpose of this study was to evaluate image quality and dose reduction of low-dose cerebral angiography during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for intracranial aneurysms. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective review of 1137 prospectively collected patients between January 2012 and June 2014 was performed. Beginning in April 2013, a dose-reduction strategy was implemented. Subjective image-quality assessment of 506 standard and 540 low-dose cerebral angiography images was performed by 2 neuroradiologists using a 5-point scale and was tested using noninferiority statistics. Radiation dose-area product and air kerma of 1046 diagnostic and 317 therapeutic procedures for intracranial aneurysms were analyzed and compared between groups before (group 1) and after (group 2) clinical implementation of a dose-reduction strategy. RESULTS The image quality of the low-dose cerebral angiography was not inferior on the basis of results from the 2 readers. For diagnostic cerebral angiography, the mean dose-area product and air kerma were 140.8 Gy×cm2 and 1.0 Gy, respectively, in group 1 and 82.0 Gy×cm2 and 0.6 Gy in group 2 (P < .001, P < .001). For the neurointerventional procedure, the mean dose-area product and air kerma were 246.0 Gy×cm2 and 3.7 Gy, respectively, in group 1 and 169.8 Gy×cm2 and 3.3 Gy in group 2 (P < .001, P = .291). CONCLUSIONS With low-dose cerebral angiography, image quality was maintained, and implementation of dose-reduction strategies reduced radiation doses in patients undergoing diagnostic and neurointerventional procedures for intracranial aneurysms.

Abstract
AIM A proportion of people with prediabetes convert back to normal glucose tolerance. We sought to determine the clinical variables associated with conversion from prediabetes to normal glucose tolerance, with a focus on insulin secretory capacity, insulin sensitivity and body composition. METHODS We followed 1731 people with prediabetes at baseline from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study every 2 years for 10 years. Oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT) were performed, and muscle and fat mass were estimated using bioelectrical impedance analysis. RESULTS During 10 years of follow-up, 36% (623/1731) of people with prediabetes converted to normal glucose tolerance. Higher baseline fasting glucose, 2-h OGTT glucose and triglyceride levels were inversely associated with this conversion. Higher 60-min insulinogenic index (IGI60 ) at baseline was independently associated with this conversion [HR per sd (95% CI) 1.09 (1.02-1.17); P = 0.01]. However, other indices reflecting insulin sensitivity, including the composite insulin sensitivity index, were not associated with this conversion. In addition, a higher baseline muscle to fat ratio was independently associated with conversion to normal glucose tolerance [HR per sd (95% CI) 1.15 (1.04-1.26); P = 0.005]. People with conversion to normal glucose tolerance showed a greater increase in the 60-min insulinogenic index and disposition index and a smaller decrease in the composite insulin sensitivity index compared with people without conversion during 10 years of follow-up (all p-values < 0.001). CONCLUSION A higher insulin secretory capacity at baseline and during follow-up and higher baseline muscle to fat ratio were independently associated with an improvement in glucose tolerance in Korean adults with prediabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE Hyaluronic acid (HA) is an anionic, non-sulfated glycosaminoglycan distributed throughout the human skin and injectable HA fillers are the most commonly used in aesthetic field. This study aimed to determine if differences in physical characteristics of HA products (monophasic or biphasic fillers) affect the patterns of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS Twenty biphasic fillers and nine monophasic fillers were obtained from a commercial source, and examined with a 3.0 Tesla MRI scanner. Visual assessments and measurements of signal intensity for region of interest (ROI) were performed. A non-parametric Wilcoxon rank sum test was used to compare the ROI values. RESULTS Visual assessments by a radiologist did not show significant differences between the two types of fillers. While the signal intensity between the two types of filler did not differ significantly for T1-weighted images, the signal intensity of the biphasic filler was lower than that of the monophasic filler for T2-weighted images (P<.01). CONCLUSION Monophasic and biphasic HA fillers exhibited different MRI properties. Our findings may provide better insights into the use of in vivo MRI to evaluate aesthetic, procedure-related complications.

Abstract
Psoriasis is a polygenic and multi-factorial disease showing ethnic differences in terms of its severity and frequency. Therapies targeting interleukin (IL)-17A, IL-17 receptor (IL-17R) and Janus kinases (JAKs) are in clinical development for the treatment of psoriasis, and their success suggests the essential role of these molecules in psoriasis. To investigate the genetic susceptibility in T helper type 17 (Th17) cell signal transduction pathways for promoting psoriasis, we performed candidate gene and linkage disequilibrium analysis. In 208 patients and 266 normal controls, we analysed 31 single nucleotide polymorphisms in 12 genes (CAMP, IL17A, IL17F, IL17RA, IL22, JAK1, JAK2, JAK3, STAT3, TLR7, TLR9 and TYK2; abbreviations: CAMP, human cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide; STAT-3, signal transducer and activator of transcription 3; TLR, Toll-like receptor; TYK2, tyrosine kinase 2). Patients with psoriasis showed a strong association for IL17F rs763780 [odds ratio (OR) = 3·27, P = 0·04], which results in a histidine-to-arginine substitution, and JAK2 rs2274471 (OR = 2·66, P = 0·02). In addition, JAK2 rs7849191 showed a protective pattern, met the significance threshold (OR = 0·77, P = 0·05) and showed a tendency for an inverse association with the frequency of early-onset psoriasis under age 40 years (P = 0·07). In haplotype analysis, JAK1 rs310241A/rs2780889T showed a protective effect (OR = 0·73, P = 0·03) in psoriasis. In conclusion, we report two new psoriasis-susceptibility loci, in IL17F and JAK2, as well as a newly identified late-onset associated protective JAK2 locus and a protective JAK1 haplotype in the Korean population.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the distinguishing features of artefactual stenosis from true stenosis at the genu of the petrous internal carotid artery (ICA) on time of flight (TOF) magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). MATERIALS AND METHODS Both TOF MRA and digital subtraction angiography (DSA) were performed in 65 patients with 74 vessels who demonstrated artefactual stenosis in 43 patients with 50 vessels and true stenosis in 22 patients with 24 vessels. The following findings of the signal loss were compared between the two groups: (1) margin, (2) darkness, (3) the presence of bilaterality, (4) the presence of tandem arterial stenosis, (5) the location of the epicentre, and (6) length. RESULTS In five out of the six evaluated items, statistically significant differences were present between the two groups (p<0.00 in all five items). Artefactual stenosis more frequently showed signal loss with ill-defined margins (47/50), less darkness compared to the background darkness (46/50), the absence of tandem arterial stenosis (35/50), epicentre at the genu (34/50), and shorter length (2.57 ± 0.68 mm). No significant difference was noted in the presence of bilaterality of signal loss between the two groups (p=0.706). CONCLUSION Several MRA features can be useful for suggesting artefactual stenosis rather than true stenosis at the genu of the petrous ICA on TOF MRA.

Abstract
AIMS In this study, we compared the glucose-lowering effectiveness of insulin analogues and their combination according to baseline glycemic status in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) from the A1 chieve(®) study conducted in Korea. METHODS This sub-analysis from the A1 chieve(®) study was a 24-week prospective, multicenter, non-interventional, open-labelled study. Of the 4058 patients, 3074 patients who had their HbA1c level measured at baseline were included in this sub-analysis. We classified patients into three groups according to baseline HbA1c levels: group I (HbA1c < 7.5%), group II (7.5% ≤ HbA1c < 9.0%) and group III (HbA1c ≥ 9.0%). RESULTS Patients in group I showed no significant HbA1c reduction with any insulin regimens (detemir, aspart, detemir and aspart or biphasic aspart 30 (Novo Nordisk A/S, DK-2880 Bagsvaerd, Denmark) after 24 weeks of treatment. In group II, although HbA1c was decreased for all insulin regimens, there was no difference in mean HbA1c reduction among the four insulin regimens. In patients with a high baseline HbA1c level (group III), mean HbA1c reduction was the greatest in patients on a basal-bolus regimen (detemir and aspart, -3.50%) and lowest in patients on a bolus regimen (aspart, -1.81%; p < 0.001). CONCLUSION For optimal glycaemic control, a basal-bolus regimen may be adequate for Korean patients with poorly controlled T2D (HbA1c ≥ 9.0%).

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE BBB disruption after acute ischemic stroke and subsequent permeability increase may be enhanced by reperfusion. Agmatine has been reported to attenuate BBB disruption. Our aim was to evaluate the effects of agmatine on BBB stabilization in a rat model of transient cerebral ischemia by using permeability dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging at early stages and subsequently to demonstrate the feasibility of dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging for the investigation of new therapies. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-four male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to transient MCA occlusion for 90 minutes. Immediately after reperfusion, agmatine (100 mg/kg) or normal saline was injected intraperitoneally into the agmatine-treated group (n = 17) or the control group, respectively. MR imaging was performed after reperfusion. For quantitative analysis, regions of interest were defined within the infarct area, and values for volume transfer constant, rate transfer coefficient, volume fraction of extravascular extracellular space, and volume fraction of blood plasma were obtained. Infarct volume, infarct growth, quantitative imaging parameters, and numbers of factor VIII-positive cells after immunohistochemical staining were compared between control and agmatine-treated groups. RESULTS Among the permeability parameters, volume transfer constant and volume fraction of extravascular extracellular space were significantly lower in the agmatine-treated group compared with the control group (0.05 ± 0.02 minutes(-1) versus 0.08 ± 0.03 minute(-1), P = .012, for volume transfer constant and 0.12 ± 0.06 versus 0.22 ± 0.15, P = .02 for volume fraction of extravascular extracellular space). Other permeability parameters were not significantly different between the groups. The number of factor VIII-positive cells was less in the agmatine-treated group than in the control group (3-fold versus 4-fold, P = .037). CONCLUSIONS In ischemic stroke, agmatine protects the BBB, which can be monitored in vivo by quantification of permeability by using dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging. Therefore, dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging may serve as a potential imaging biomarker for assessing the BBB stabilization properties of pharmacologic agents.

Abstract
AIM To retrospectively compare the utility of perfusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in distinguishing treatment-related changes from recurrent disease in glioma patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-one patients with histologically diagnosed gliomas and increased enhancement after or during concurrent (chemo-) radiation therapy were enrolled. They underwent dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) permeability MRI followed by dynamic susceptibility contrast (DSC) perfusion MRI. The vascular transfer constant (rK(trans)) and initial areas under the concentration curve (riAUC) were obtained from DCE MRI, and cerebral blood volume (rCBV) was obtained from DSC MRI. Patients were classified as having treatment-related changes or recurrent tumours based on clinicoradiological results or pathological results from surgery. RESULTS Nineteen patients were diagnosed as having recurrences and 12 patients as having treatment-related changes. The rK(trans), riAUC, and rCBV values in the recurrent group were significantly higher than the values in the group with treatment-related changes (p < 0.05). For all 31 patients, there was no significant difference between DSC MRI and DCE MRI for the differentiating power between recurrence and treatment-related changes (p = 0.7227). However, when including only the 24 patients with concordant values of rK(trans) and riAUC, DCE MRI showed a significant AUC value of 0.786 in the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis (p = 0.003), whereas DSC MRI did not (AUC = 0.643, p = 0.229). CONCLUSION MRI perfusion images appear to show promise in distinguishing treatment-related changes from recurrent tumours. When both rK(trans) and riAUC show concordant values, DCE MRI seems to be more powerful than DSC MRI in the differentiation of recurrence from treatment-related changes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Infectious agents, especially Streptococcus sanguinis and herpes simplex virus, have long been postulated as major triggering factors for Behçet disease (BD). OBJECTIVES To identify an anti-S. sanguinis antigen reacting with serum IgA antibody in patients with BD. METHODS We detected a target protein by proteomics analysis and evaluated serum IgA reactivity of 100 patients with BD against the identified streptococcal target protein and human heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein (hnRNP) A2/B1. Homologous epitope sequences between the streptococcal target protein and human hnRNP A2/B1 were also evaluated. RESULTS Four protein bands were detected by immunoprecipitation, and chaperonin GroEL was identified by a proteomics analysis. Reactivity of serum IgA against recombinant S. sanguinis GroEL was detected in 77 of 100 patients with BD (77%) and in 21 of 70 healthy controls (30%). In addition, reactivity of serum IgA against human recombinant hnRNP A2/B1 was seen in 79 of 100 patients with BD (79%) and in eight of 70 healthy controls (11%). Among the eight distinctive epitopes with significant homology between S. sanguinis GroEL and human hnRNP A2/B1, the serum IgA reactivity of patients with BD was markedly higher with epitope 3 (hnRNP A2/B1 peptide 33-46 and GroEL peptide 57-70) and epitope 6 (hnRNP A2/B1 peptide 177-188 and GroEL peptide 347-358). CONCLUSION We identified an S. sanguinis GroEL protein as a target of serum anti-S. sanguinis IgA antibody reactivity in patients with BD. In addition, patients with BD exhibited serum IgA reactivity against homologous epitope regions between S. sanguinis GroEL and human hnRNP A2/B1.

Abstract
We report on the coupling of the air/metal mode and the substrate/metal mode surface plasmon polaritons in one-dimensional metallic slit arrays fabricated on a dielectric substrate. Anti-crossing is exhibited at an incident angle where the two independent modes can be resonantly excited at a specific wavelength. The size of the anti-crossing gap was measured while changing the metal thickness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Even with the increasing demand for functional cosmeceuticals in the recent years, objective standard criteria for assessing their efficacy are currently incomplete at best. In this 8-week face-split study, in which we topically applied high-priced cosmeceuticals on one side and more affordable cosmeceuticals on the other side of the face, we compared the efficacy of these two products using non-invasive bioengineering technology. METHODS We assessed the efficacy of a skin-whitening and an anti-wrinkle cosmeceutical product on 25 and 19 healthy female volunteers, respectively. In a single blind split setting, each participant received an 8-week topical application of high-priced cosmeceuticals to the left side of the face, and cheaper cosmeceuticals to the right side. Then, the subjects' biophysical parameters were measured for an objective evaluation of the results. This was followed by a questionnaire to obtain a subjective assessment. RESULTS There was no significant difference in the change between the high-priced cosmeceuticals and the more affordable cosmeceuticals. At each measured site, there were variable changes including skin improvement and aggravation at the end of study. The subjective questionnaire demonstrated also that the participants perceived no difference in the efficacy between the two products. CONCLUSIONS Our results showed that there were no significant differences in the skin biophysical parameters following the application with high-priced functional cosmeceuticals or less expensive cosmeceuticals. The subject failed to differentiate between the two products. The development of objective standard criteria for assessing its efficacy is essential.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein (hnRNP) A2/B1 has been identified as a target antigen of anti-endothelial cell immunglobulin (Ig)A antibodies in patients with Behçet's disease (BD). The aim was to investigate the effects of the sera from BD patients and Streptococcus sanguis on the subcellular expression of hnRNP A2/B1 in human dermal microvascular endothelial cells (HDMECs). METHOD The sera of BD patients and healthy controls (HC) as well as cultured S. sanguis were used to stimulate HDMECs. Subcellular fractions were obtained from stimulated HDMECs and were subjected to immunoblot analyses. The distribution of hnRNP A2/B1 was investigated by immunocytochemistry and direct immunofluorescence study was performed in biopsy specimens of mucosal ulcers from BD patients. RESULTS BD patients' sera increased the membrane expression of hnRNP A2/B1 in HDMECs after 12 and 24 h of incubation compared with HDMECs incubated with endothelial cell culture media and HC sera. S. sanguis also increased hnRNP A2/B1 in the cellular membrane. hnRNP A2/B1 mRNA level was also significantly upregulated in HDMECs incubated with BD patients' sera and S. sanguis. Immunocytochemistry demonstrated marked expression of hnRNP A2/B1 in the cytoplasm and cellular membrane of HDMECs incubated with BD patients' sera or S. sanguis. In addition, direct immunofluorescence experiments revealed the co-localization of serum IgA antibodies and monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against hnRNP A2/B1 in tissue sections from ulcers of BD patients. CONCLUSIONS Our data indicate that both the sera of BD patients with active disease and S. sanguis infection are inflammatory stimuli that can induce membranous hnRNP A2/B1 expression in HDMECs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Although a few automated hippocampal subfield segmentation methods have been developed, there is no study on the effects of the diagnosis of Alzheimer disease on the hippocampal subfield volume with in vivo MR imaging. The aim of this study was to investigate hippocampal subfield volume differences between drug-naïve subjects with AD and healthy elderly controls by using an automated hippocampal subfield segmentation technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-one drug-naïve subjects with AD and 33 group-matched healthy control subjects underwent 3T MR imaging, and hippocampal subfield volume was measured and compared between the groups. RESULTS Subjects with AD had significantly smaller volumes of the presubiculum, subiculum, CA2-3, and CA4 DG compared with healthy subjects (uncorrected, P<.001). In addition, we found significant positive correlations between the presubiculum and the subicular volumes and the MMSE-K and the CERAD-K verbal delayed recall scores in the AD group. CONCLUSIONS We are unaware of previous imaging studies of automated hippocampal subfield segmentation in AD. These structural changes in the hippocampal presubiculum, subiculum, and CA2-3 might be at the core of underlying neurobiologic mechanisms of hippocampal dysfunction and their relevance to verbal delayed recall impairments in AD.

Abstract
Fulminant Type 1 diabetes is a subtype of Type 1 diabetes characterized by (1) abrupt onset of diabetes, (2) very short duration of hyperglycaemia with mildly elevated HbA(1c) (< 69 mmol/mol, 8.5%), (3) rapid progression to diabetic ketoacidosis, (4) very low C-peptide level, and (5) often associated with elevated serum pancreatic enzymes, and absence of diabetes-related autoantibodies. We encountered a case of fulminant Type 1 diabetes that developed with an initial manifestation of the insulin autoimmune syndrome and rapidly progressed to diabetic ketoacidosis during pregnancy. A 31-year-old Korean woman presented with recurrent sudden onset of sweating and change of consciousness during sleep at 19 weeks gestation. During a 72-h fasting test, hypoglycaemia (1.72 mmol/l) occurred at 4 h after the start of the test. At that time, there was a high insulin level (370.2 μU/ml), a paradoxically low C-peptide level (0.01 nmol/l) and a positive insulin autoantibody test. An oral glucose tolerance test revealed postprandial hyperglycaemia. She was initially diagnosed as the insulin autoimmune syndrome. On the day 5 of admission, she developed diabetic ketoacidosis. Her HbA(1c) was 62 mmol/mol (7.8%). The rapid progression of diabetic ketoacidosis altered the diagnosis to fulminant Type 1 diabetes. This case differed from typical fulminant Type 1 diabetes because it presented with hypoglycaemia, and positive insulin and anti-phospholipid antibody tests. Her HLA typing was HLA-DQA1*0302, 0501, HLA-DRB1*0301 (DR3), 0901(DR9). Her glucose level was subsequently very well controlled with multiple insulin injections and she successfully delivered a healthy baby.

Abstract
We investigate band formation in one-dimensional periodic arrays of rectangular holes which have a nanoscale width but a length of 100 μm. These holes are tailored to work as resonators in the terahertz frequency regime. We study the evolution of the electromagnetic response with the period of the array, showing that this dependence is not monotonic due to both the oscillating behavior of the coupling between holes and its long-range character.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE DTI can be used to assess the degradation of WM tracts by measuring the FA and MD. Decreased FA/increased MD values in the AD hippocampus have been reported by many studies. In contrast, only a few studies reported on hydrocephalus by using the DTI technique. In elderly patients with dementia and with dilated ventricles, it is often difficult to differentiate iNPH from AD with visual measurements on MR imaging. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes of microstructural integrity of the hippocampus in iNPH by using DTI and determining whether this method could be a new diagnostic tool to differentiate iNPH from AD. MATERIALS AND METHODS We recruited 43 participants (15 healthy controls, 15 patients with AD, and 13 patients with iNPH). The FA and MD values were measured by using the region-of-interest method in the hippocampal head, body, and tail on both sides. Clinical history, neurologic examination, and neuropsychological assessment were included. RESULTS The FA values were the lowest in the patients with AD, the patients with iNPH, and the healthy controls in this order. The MD values were the highest in the same order. These findings were consistent in the 3 subdivisions of the bilateral hippocampal regions. Hippocampal volume was not different between patients with iNPH and AD. CONCLUSIONS The microstructural alterations of the hippocampus were more sensitive than the volumetric changes in AD and iNPH. DTI analysis might be a useful tool for discriminating AD from iNPH.

Abstract
We perform phase-sensitive imaging of optical wavefront emanating from a single nanoslit and propagating into free space by using scattering type near-field scanning optical microscope combined with an optical interferometer. By analyzing polarization resolved optical amplitudes and phases, the propagation directions of surface waves are determined and the phase difference between two orthogonal polarization components of the surface wave are discussed for increasing distance from the slit.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE CT and MR imaging of the brain have diverged reference lines. Modified Talairach anterior/posterior commissure (ACPC) line is widely accepted as the standard for clinical brain MR imaging, while orbitomeatal line (OML) is used for CT. This study sought to determine an appropriate reference line for brain CT parallel to the ACPC line. MATERIALS AND METHODS We measured the angles between the ACPC line and the OML, the line connecting the tuberculum sellae and the internal occipital protuberance (TS-IOP line), and the line connecting the tuberculum sellae and the external occipital protuberance (TS-EOP line) on midsagittal brain MR images of 223 patients. In addition, with the hard palate as the basis, the angles to the ACPC line in the brain MR images and new reference line on the brain CT images from the same patient were measured, and the difference between the 2 angles was calculated in 30 patients. In the same method, the angles to the OML in the brain CT images and the ACPC line on the brain MR images were measured, and their difference was calculated in 30 patients. Then the 2 difference values were compared with verification of the new reference line. RESULTS The angles between the ACPC line and both the TS-IOP line (0.0 degrees +/- 4.0 degrees ) and the TS-EOP line (0.8 degrees +/- 3.2 degrees ) were significantly smaller than the angles between the ACPC line and the OML (-12.6 degrees +/- 4.2 degrees ; P < .05). In actual scanned images, the angle differences between the TS-OP (TS-IOP + TS-EOP) line and the ACPC line (0.3 degrees +/- 4.5 degrees ) were statistically smaller than the angles between the OML and the ACPC line (-6.6 degrees +/- 3.9 degrees ; P < .05). CONCLUSIONS TS-OP lines are nearly parallel to the ACPC line.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE alpha-Enolase is a target antigen of IgM-type anti-endothelial cell antibody in patients with Behçet's disease (BD). The objective of this study was to assess the reactivity of serum anti-alpha-enolase antibodies in BD and in other rheumatologic diseases, and to evaluate the clinical significance of serum anti-alpha-enolase antibodies in BD. METHODS Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunoblotting were used to examine serum samples from patients with BD (n=100), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) (n=50), systemic sclerosis (n=21), rheumatoid arthritis (RA) (n=20), Takayasu's arteritis (n=20), dermatomyositis (n=17), mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) (n=11), and samples from healthy volunteer donors (n=23). The medical records of patients with BD were reviewed to investigate their clinical characteristics. RESULTS Specific positive signals against recombinant human alpha-enolase were detected by IgM ELISA of serum samples from 56 of the 100 BD patients (56.0%), 24 of the 50 SLE patients (48.0%), 15 of the 21 systemic sclerosis patients (71.4%), 13 of the 20 RA patients (65.0%), 10 of the 20 Takayasu's arteritis patients (50.0%), 9 of the 17 dermatomyositis patients (52.9%), and 5 of the 11 MCTD patients (45.5%). The number of BD patients with vascular lesions was significantly higher in the anti-alpha-enolase antibody positive group than in the negative group (p=0.027). CONCLUSION We demonstrated the reactivities of serum anti-alpha-enolase antibodies in BD and other rheumatologic diseases with moderate specificity and also found that serum anti-alpha-enolase antibodies in BD can be associated with vascular system involvement.

Abstract
We performed terahertz near-field experiments on single rectangular holes with various lengths grown on an electro-optic crystal substrate with lambda/100 resolution. We find that the near-field amplitude becomes proportionally larger as the rectangle becomes narrower, strongly suggesting that a constant energy passes through even for a very narrow slit. The occurrence of a large field enhancement at the fundamental localized resonance is discussed confirming the funneling of energy at the near-field.

Abstract
Image dipole effects are highly dependent on the polarization direction, constructive (destructive) interference between real and image dipoles for the vertically (horizontally) aligned one in the vicinity of metal surfaces, respectively. This polarization-reversal of the image dipole effects is quantitatively investigated by using a gold nanoparticle functionalized tip as a local dipolar scatterer and a propagating surface plasmon polariton as an excitation source of dipoles. The polarization-resolved detection technique is applied to separate the radiations of the vertical and the horizontal dipoles from each other. In our study, the image dipole effects on the far-field detected signals are fully explained by the Fabry-Perot like interference between the radiations from the real and the image dipoles, and by considering the finite size effects of the gold nanoparticle.

Abstract
Using terahertz-light excitation, we have measured with sub-wavelength spatial, and sub-cycle temporal resolution the time- and frequency-dependent electric-field and surface-charge density in the vicinity of small metallic holes. In addition to a singularity like concentration of the electric field near the hole edges, we observe, that holes can act as differential operators whose near-field output is the time-derivative of the incident electric field. Our results confirm the well-known predictions made by Bouwkamp, Philips Res. Rep. 5, 321-332 (1950), and reveal, with unprecedented detail, what physically happens when light passes through a small hole.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation affects the function and complexion of the skin by inducing changes in physical properties through formation of erythema, proliferation of epithelial cells, DNA damage, activation or inactivation of various enzymes and proteins, and free radical formation. In this study, the authors intended to observe the overall course of changes in barrier function and reflectance of the skin induced by photodamage, and healing reaction in the course of time, and alteration of the skin complexion. METHODS The subjects were chosen from 15 healthy Korean men 20-35 in age, that fall into the category of Fitzpatrick's skin types II, III, and IV without history of recent exposure to sunlight, photosensitivity, or having taken any drugs that induce phototoxicity or photoallergic reactions. The subjects were artificially exposed to suberythemogenic dose [0.5 minimal erythemal dose (MED), 0.75 MED], 1 MED and high dose (2.5 MED) by solar simulator, and changes in skin barrier function and skin reflectance were assessed with a Tewameter, a Corneometer, and a Colorimeter for 4 weeks. RESULTS Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) increased abruptly at Day 1 of single solar UV (SSUV) exposure, and slowly returned to the original level from Day 2/Day 3. In the case of exposure with 0.75 MED, it returned to the original level at Day 4 of exposure, and at Days 7 and 28 in the cases of 1 MED and 2.5 MED exposure, respectively. Water-holding capacity sharply declined at Day 1 of exposure, hitting the lowest point at Day 2, and then slowly recovered starting on Day 3. In the case of exposure with 0.75 MED and 1 MED, it returned to the original level at Days 7 and 28 in the case of 2.5 MED exposure. The a(*) values abruptly increased and reached the peak at Day 1 and slowly returned to the original level at Day 2, while the b(*) values slowly increased at Day 3, peaking at Day 7 and slowly returning to the original level thereafter. The L(*) values abruptly declined at Day 1, maintaining plateau through Day 7 and slowly returning to the baseline level thereafter. The individual typology angle (ITA degrees ) were compatible with L(*) values change. The erythema index increased abruptly at Day 1 of SSUV exposure, peaking at Day 2 and slowly returned to the original level starting at Day 3. Melanin index slowly started to increase on Day 3 of SSUV exposure, peaking at Day 7 and gradually returned to the original level thereafter. However, L(*), a(*), b(*), erythema index, and melanin index did not return to the original level during the 28-day course of this study. CONCLUSION This study shows that in the skin of Korean subjects, changes in skin barrier function and delayed melanization do occur even in exposure to a suberythemogenic dose of SSUV. Also, given the fact that restoration of barrier function occurs as the process of melanization begins, melanization is considered to be a useful predictive indicator of the restoration of the skin barrier function after sunburn.

Abstract
We have measured local electric field vectors of local polarizaton on the nanoscale using gold nanoparticle functionalized tips as local field scatterers. In our experiments, the local field induces a dipole-moment in the gold nanoparticle functionalized tip, which then radiates into the far-field, transferring the full information about the local electric field from the near into the far field. The polarization characteristics of the scattered fields are analyzed using a conventional ellipsometry method. The tip dependent scattering function- the polarizability tensor- is fully determined by far field scattering measurements. Once the polarizability tensor for each tip is correctly accounted for in the data analysis, our results show that the finally determined local field polarization vectors are essentially independent of the tip shape.

Acoustic wave excitation of semiconductor quantum dots generates resonance fluorescence of electronic intersublevel excitations. Our theoretical analysis predicts acoustoluminescence, in particular, a conversion of acoustic into electromagnetic THz waves over a broad spectral range.

Abstract
This study concerns a culture research based on the data gathered from Korean subjects to examine distribution of Malassezia yeast. Malassezia yeast were cultivated out of samples from scalp, forehead, chest, arm and thigh. Malassezia restricta was recovered more frequently in the teens and young adults, while M. globosa was the predominant species in subjects older than 50 years of age. The population density of Malassezia yeast was significantly higher in the age group (AG) of 21-30 years compared with other AGs (P < 0.05). It was also significantly higher in the chest compared with the forehead, arm and thigh (P < 0.05). The key is to recognise the existence of a difference in the amount and type of Malassezia species in different AGs as well as body areas, which reflects differing skin lipid levels in various AGs and different body areas.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to identify brain centers, whose activity changes are related to erotic visual stimuli in healthy, heterosexual, middle aged males. Ten heterosexual, right-handed males with normal sexual function were entered into the present study (mean age 52 years, range 46-55). All potential subjects were screened over 1 h interview, and were encouraged to fill out questionnaires including the Brief Male Sexual Function Inventory. All subjects with a history of sexual arousal disorder or erectile dysfunction were excluded. We performed functional brain magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in male volunteers when an alternatively combined erotic and nonerotic film was played for 14 min and 9 s. The major areas of activation associated with sexual arousal to visual stimuli were occipitotemporal area, anterior cingulate gyrus, insula, orbitofrontal cortex, caudate nucleus. However, hypothalamus and thalamus were not activated. We suggest that the nonactivation of hypothalamus and thalamus in middle aged males may be responsible for the lesser physiological arousal in response to the erotic visual stimuli.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE The assessment of the sensitivity of human skin to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is important in the area of phototherapy, photodermatoses, photo-aging, photo-carcinogenesis, and photo-protection. Some reports have shown that quantitatively measured skin color is a good indicator for predicting UV sensitivity to human skin in Caucasians. In this study, our aim was to define the correlation between skin color and the skin phototype assessed by the Fitzpatrick method in Asian brown skin. METHODS A total of 180 medical students with similar life styles were included in this study. Their skin phototype was classified according to the system introduced by Fitzpatrick. Then, using a Minolta Spectrophotometer CM-2002, their skin color was determined on the buttocks and forehead. The buttock color was taken as the constitutive skin color, and the forehead color as the facultative skin color. Using these measured values, we compared the skin color with the skin phototype to find their correlation. Also, we investigated whether the difference between the constitutive and facultative skin colors of each individual had a relationship with his or her skin phototype. RESULTS The constitutive skin color became darker with increasing skin phototype, and this change was statistically significant. As for the facultative skin color, it also became darker with increasing skin phototype, but was less well correlated with the skin phototype than the constitutive skin color. However, the difference between the constitutive and facultative skin colors did not show consistent results in predicting the skin phototype. CONCLUSION In this study, we found that the constitutive skin color can be a good indicator of the skin phototype. However, the difference between the constitutive and facultative skin colors of each individual does not give any meaningful information for the assessment of his or her skin phototype in Asian skin.

Abstract
Typically, reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome (RPLS) involves the parieto-occipital lobes. When regions of the brain other than the parieto-occipital lobes are predominantly involved, the syndrome can be called atypical RPLS. The purpose of this study is to find radiological and pathophysiological features of atypical RPLS by using diffusion-weighted imaging (D-WI). We retrospectively reviewed seven patients (two with eclampsia, one with cyclosporine neurotoxicity, and four with hypertensive encephalopathy) with atypical MR manifestations of RPLS. Changes in signal intensity on T2-weighted imaging (T2-WI) and D-WI, and ADC ratio, were analyzed. In patients with atypical manifestation of RPLS, high signal intensities on T2-WI were noted in the frontal lobe, basal ganglia, thalamus, brainstem, and subcortical white matter in regions other than the parieto-occipital lobes. These areas of increased signal intensities on T2-WI showed increased ADC values, representing vasogenic edema in all seven patients. This result should be very useful in differentiating atypical RPLS from other metabolic brain disorders that affect the same sites with cytotoxic edema.

Abstract
Re-circulation artefact developing secondary to vortex flow at the bulb of the internal carotid artery is very difficult to distinguish from true stenotic defect on two-dimensional Fourier transformed time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography (2D-FT TOF MRA). The purpose of our study is to identify appropriate distinguishing features of re-circulation artefact. We included 45 extracranial carotid arteries collected from 25 patients who underwent both 2D-FT TOF MRA and contrast medium based angiography. Review of the 45 vessels demonstrated re-circulation artefact in 21 vessels, true stenotic defect in 8 vessels, and no filling defect in 16 vessels on 2D-FT TOF MRA. We compared the findings of re-circulation artefact and true stenotic defect in 29 vessels excluding the 16 vessels without filling defect. The following were evaluated: (1) preservation of posterior wall contour; (2) marginal character of filling defect; (3) darkness of filling defect; (4) involvement of common carotid artery by filling defect; (5) size of filling defect. In four out of the five evaluated items, statistically significant difference was present between re-circulation artefact group and true stenotic defect group (p<0.01 in all four items, chi(2) analysis). Re-circulation artefact demonstrated the preservation of the posterior wall contour (19/21), ill-defined margin (19/21), less dark defect (18/21), and no involvement of the common carotid artery (19/21). On the contrary true stenotic defect demonstrated focal loss of posterior wall contour (8/8), sharp margin (8/8), dark defect (8/8), and involvement of common carotid artery (4/8). No significant difference was noted in the size of the defect between the two groups (p>0.05). The specificity of 2D-FT TOF MRA for carotid stenosis was markedly increased after application of above signs. These distinguishing signs are very helpful in differentiating re-circulation artefact from true stenotic defect.

Abstract
FK506 is a newly developed potent immunosuppressant for preventing rejection after organ transplantation. However, FK506 can induce central nervous system toxicity. Until now the pathogenic mechanism of FK506 neurotoxicity was unclear. We report the findings of diffusion-weighted MRI and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) mapping of a FK506 neurotoxicity patient who showed increased signal intensities in both parieto-occipital lobes on T(2) weighted images, diffusion-weighted images and ADC maps. These findings suggest that a vasogenic oedema rather than a cytotoxic oedema may play a pivotal role in FK506 neurotoxicity pathogenesis.

Abstract
The effects of temperature and salinity on in vitro development of Perkinsus sp. prezoosporangia isolated from cultured Manila clams in Korea were investigated, and the difference in resistance to low temperature between prezoosporangia collected in winter and those collected in summer was compared. Temperature and salinity had significant effects on the development of prezoosporangia, and the developmental rates increased with increasing temperature and salinity. Prezoosporangia isolated in winter sporulated and released motile zoospores at 10 degrees C, although the rates were significantly lower than those at 20 and 30 degrees C. However, no prezoosporangia collected in summer sporulated at 10 degrees C. Low salinities (< or = 10/1000) had a significant negative effect on the development of prezoosporangia. A small number of prezoosporangia sampled in summer did sporulate at 5/1000, but further developments including formation and release of zoospores were not observed. However, prezoosporangia sampled in winter and incubated at 5/1000 released motile zoospores, although the rates were significantly lower than those at higher salinities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Functional MR (fMR) imaging is based on changes in regional blood flow. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of fMR imaging for detection of a vascular compromised status in the occipital lobe in patients with ischemia in the visual cortex. METHODS We performed fMR imaging in seven control subjects and seven patients with symptoms and signs of visual cortical transient ischemia and/or infarct. fMR imaging was performed using a gradient-echo sequence with the 2D fast low-angle shot technique. An axial slice including both visual cortices was selected, and stimulation of the visual cortex was performed using a red photostimulator. The number of activated pixels in each primary visual cortex area were counted and an asymmetry ratio [AR (%) = 100 x (R-L)/(R+L)/2] was calculated. Patients and control subjects underwent visual field examination, conventional MR imaging, and vascular imaging (MR angiography in all patients and control subjects, conventional catheter angiography in two patients). fMR imaging results were compared with the results of a visual field examination, conventional MR imaging, and vascular imaging. RESULTS fMR imaging of the patients showed significant activation asymmetry (P <.05) compared with that of control subjects. Vascular abnormalities in the posterior circulation were found in all seven patients. By conventional MR imaging, five patients were found to have infarction in the occipital lobe and the remaining two patients showed no abnormality. In visual field examination, six of the seven patients showed homonymous hemi- or quadrantanopsia suggesting postchiasmic abnormalities, and the remaining patient had normal findings. fMR imaging showed decreased activity in the visual cortices corresponding to vascular abnormalities (seven of seven patients), permanent infarction (five of seven patients), or visual field defect (six of seven patients). Two patients with normal conventional MR imaging had vascular lesions in the posterior circulation, and fMR imaging showed decreased activity in the corresponding visual cortices. One patient with normal visual field examination had multifocal stenosis in the posterior cerebral artery without infarction, and fMR imaging showed decreased activity in the corresponding visual cortex. CONCLUSION fMR imaging of the visual cortex may be a sensitive method for the detection of vascular-compromised status in the occipital lobe.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the diagnostic value of orbital line changes on plain radiographs in detecting blow-out fracture. 92 cases of surgically confirmed blow-out fracture were retrospectively analysed in regard to plain radiographs and CT. Anterior and posterior lamina papyracea lines (ALPL and PLPL, respectively) of the orbital medial wall as well as the posteromedial floor line (PMFL) were assessed on orbital posteroanterior projections. The inferomedial orbital line (IMOL) and the inferior wall line were assessed on Waters projections. Orbital lines on plain radiographs were compared with CT findings. Of 53 cases of lamina papyracea fracture, 47 cases showed orbital line changes on plain radiographs (sensitivity 88.7%). Changes of PLPL (41/47), IMOL (29/47), ALPL (4/47) and PMFL (2/47) were demonstrated as depression, loss, discontinuity and irregularity. In four cases showing normal radiographs, the fractures measured less than 9 mm in size on CT. All 25 cases with orbital floor fracture accompanying medial wall fracture demonstrated orbital line changes of PMFL (16/25), PLPL (14/25), ALPL (3/25) and IMOL (2/25) (sensitivity 100%). 12 of 14 cases with orbital floor fracture demonstrated changes of inferior wall line (7/12) and PMFL (6/12) (sensitivity 85.7%). Two cases demonstrated asymmetric focal soft tissue density without orbital line changes. Orbital line changes on plain radiographs corresponded well with CT findings, confirming the usefulness of plain radiographs in detecting blow-out fracture.

Abstract
The CD40-CD40L interaction, which was initially shown to have important roles in the T cell-mediated activation of B cells during humoral immune responses, is now known to have roles in activation of endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, and macrophages within atherosclerotic plaques. Recently, CD40L expression was found in activated platelets in the thrombus in vivo and CD40L was reported to be responsible for the platelet-mediated activation of endothelial cells in vitro. To investigate the activation status of platelets in coronary artery disease patients, we tested expression levels of CD40L, and platelet-endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (PECAM-1/CD31) in platelets isolated from peripheral blood, using flow cytometric analysis. Twenty-nine patients with acute coronary syndrome (10 acute myocardial infarction and 19 unstable angina patients) were compared with 14 normal subjects or 14 stable angina patients. In platelets isolated from normal subjects, the expression of CD40L was not detected in all subjects. In the patients with acute coronary syndrome, the average level of CD40L showed a significant increase (p = 0.0028), while stable angina patients did not have any increase when compared to normal subjects. Patients with more complex lesions or vessel occlusion tended to have a high platelet CD40L level compared to patients who do not. The expression levels of CD31 were increased in a small portion of the ACS patients. These data indicate that the rupture of plaque and subsequent formation of thrombus may lead to the activation of CD40L expression in circulating platelets of ACS patients.

Abstract
Maximizing peak bone mass is advocated as a way to prevent osteoporosis. To evaluate the peak bone mass and the affecting factors in Korean women, we analyzed bone stiffness in 116 middle school students, 118 high school students and 115 female college students by using the Achilles densitometer (Lunar Corporation). Peak bone stiffness of Korean women was relatively lower than that of white women (94% of white women) and a rapid rise of bone stiffness was observed in those subjects 3-4 years after menarche. In adolescent females without menstruation, the bone stiffness was lower than that of adolescent girls with menstruation. The factors affecting the peak bone mass was similar to the risk factors of post menopausal osteoporosis: menstruation status, calcium intake and physical activity. The amount of calcium intake in Korean girls at the critical age (3-4 years after menarche) was lower than the RDA (requirement of daily allowance) at this age. To improve any program aimed at maximizing peak bone mass, further intensive study will be required to evaluate some other common factors affecting peak bone mass in Korean.

Abstract
We performed a study to determine whether clinical history gives a positive or negative influence on X-ray film interpretation. One hundred and nine patient's radiograms, consisting of 55 normal and 54 abnormal cases (136 abnormalities), were interpreted twice by three pairs of residents in radiology and a pair of qualified radiologists, without clinical history first and with clinical history next. The interpreters recorded diagnosis and confidence level of normal or abnormal findings on a six-point scale. Analysis of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves showed that knowledge of clinical history improved diagnostic accuracy. Residents, especially beginners, should be advised to obtain clinical history whenever they read radiograms.

Abstract
Islets were isolated from the pancreata of Sprague-Dawley rats and transplanted into streptozotocin-induced diabetic outbred Wistar rats. The effect of transplantation of islets into the cisterna magna on the diabetic state of the recipients was compared with that of the conventional transplantation of islets into liver via the portal vein. After successful intraportal (IP) transplantation, rejection took place between days 7 and 15 in all diabetic recipients. All of the eleven rats surviving after stereotaxic implantation of islets into the cisterna magna returned to normoglycemia within 7 days after transplantation. Nine of the recipients with intra-cisterna magna (IM) islet allografts were still normoglycemic at 210 days after transplantation. The glucose disappearance rate of the IM transplant rats was slower than that of the IP transplant rats, and blood glucose returned to the normal basal level within 5 hr following glucose administration. Although the insulin levels were almost undetectable in cerebrospinal fluid before IM transplantation, the insulin levels were markedly increased after IM transplantation and twice as great in CSF than blood. Thus, these findings indicate that the cisterna magna can serve as an immunologically privileged site for implantation of allogeneic pancreatic islets, and islets in CSF can regulate and maintain normal glucose homeostasis via secretion of insulin across the blood-brain barrier.
