Abstract
Spectroscopic factors of neutron-hole and proton-hole states in ^{131}Sn and ^{131}In, respectively, were measured using one-nucleon removal reactions from doubly magic ^{132}Sn at relativistic energies. For ^{131}In, a 2910(50)-keV γ ray was observed for the first time and tentatively assigned to a decay from a 5/2^{-} state at 3275(50) keV to the known 1/2^{-} level at 365 keV. The spectroscopic factors determined for this new excited state and three other single-hole states provide first evidence for a strong fragmentation of single-hole strength in ^{131}Sn and ^{131}In. The experimental results are compared to theoretical calculations based on the relativistic particle-vibration coupling model and to experimental information for single-hole states in the stable doubly magic nucleus ^{208}Pb.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE 4D-DSA allows time-resolved 3D imaging of the cerebral vasculature. The aim of our study was to evaluate this method in comparison with the current criterion standard 3D-DSA by qualitative and quantitative means using computational fluid dynamics. MATERIALS AND METHODS 3D- and 4D-DSA datasets were acquired in patients with cerebral aneurysms. Computational fluid dynamics analysis was performed for all datasets. Using computational fluid dynamics, we compared 4D-DSA with 3D-DSA in terms of both aneurysmal geometry (quantitative: maximum diameter, ostium size [OZ1/2], volume) and hemodynamic parameters (qualitative: flow stability, flow complexity, inflow concentration; quantitative: average/maximum wall shear stress, impingement zone, low-stress zone, intra-aneurysmal pressure, and flow velocity). Qualitative parameters were descriptively analyzed. Correlation coefficients (r, P value) were calculated for quantitative parameters. RESULTS 3D- and 4D-DSA datasets of 10 cerebral aneurysms in 10 patients were postprocessed. Evaluation of aneurysmal geometry with 4D-DSA (r maximum diameter = 0.98, P maximum diameter <.001; r OZ1/OZ2 = 0.98/0.86, P OZ1/OZ2 < .001/.002; r volume = 0.98, P volume <.001) correlated highly with 3D-DSA. Evaluation of qualitative hemodynamic parameters (flow stability, flow complexity, inflow concentration) did show complete accordance, and evaluation of quantitative hemodynamic parameters (r average/maximum wall shear stress diastole = 0.92/0.88, P average/maximum wall shear stress diastole < .001/.001; r average/maximum wall shear stress systole = 0.94/0.93, P average/maximum wall shear stress systole < .001/.001; r impingement zone = 0.96, P impingement zone < .001; r low-stress zone = 1.00, P low-stress zone = .01; r pressure diastole = 0.84, P pressure diastole = .002; r pressure systole = 0.9, P pressure systole < .001; r flow velocity diastole = 0.95, P flow velocity diastole < .001; r flow velocity systole = 0.93, P flow velocity systole < .001) did show nearly complete accordance between 4D- and 3D-DSA. CONCLUSIONS Despite a different injection protocol, 4D-DSA is a reliable basis for computational fluid dynamics analysis of the intracranial vasculature and provides equivalent visualization of aneurysm geometry compared with 3D-DSA.

Abstract
The evolution of local ferroelectric lattice distortions in multiferroic Ge1-x Mn x Te is studied by x-ray diffraction, x-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory. We show that the anion/cation displacements smoothly decrease with increasing Mn content, thereby reducing the ferroelectric transition from 700 to 100 K at x = 0.5, where the ferromagnetic Curie temperature reaches its maximum. First principles calculations explain this quenching by different local bond contributions of the Mn 3d shell compared to the Ge 4s shell in excellent quantitative agreement with the experiments.

Abstract
We report here an original approach to dope the semiconducting polymer-metal interface in an inverted bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cell. Solution-processed 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4-TCNQ), is deposited on top of a P3HT:PC61BM layer before deposition of the top electrode. Doping of P3HT by F4-TCNQ occurs after thermally induced diffusion at 100 °C of the latter into the BHJ. Diffusion and doping are evidenced by XPS and UV-vis-NIR absorption. XPS highlights the decrease in Fluorine concentration on top of the BHJ after annealing. In the same time, a charge transfer band attributed to doping is observed in the UV-vis-NIR absorption spectrum. Inverted polymer solar cells using solution-processed F4-TCNQ exhibit power conversion efficiency of nearly 3.5% after annealing. This simple and efficient approach, together with the low annealing temperature required to allow diffusion and doping, leads to standard efficiency P3HT:PC61BM polymer solar cells, which are suitable for printing on plastic flexible substrate.

Abstract
We report on the formation of Ge/Si quantum dots with core/shell structure that are arranged in a three-dimensional body centered tetragonal quantum dot lattice in an amorphous alumina matrix. The material is prepared by magnetron sputtering deposition of Al2O3/Ge/Si multilayer. The inversion of Ge and Si in the deposition sequence results in the formation of thin Si/Ge layers instead of the dots. Both materials show an atomically sharp interface between the Ge and Si parts of the dots and layers. They have an amorphous internal structure that can be crystallized by an annealing treatment. The light absorption properties of these complex materials are significantly different compared to films that form quantum dot lattices of the pure Ge, Si or a solid solution of GeSi. They show a strong narrow absorption peak that characterizes a type II confinement in accordance with theoretical predictions. The prepared materials are promising for application in quantum dot solar cells.

Abstract
Interleukin (IL)-17 plays a critical role in inflammation. Most studies to date have elucidated the inflammatory role of IL-17A, often referred to as IL-17. IL-17F is a member of the IL-17 family bearing 50% homology to IL-17A and can also be present as heterodimer IL-17AF. This study elucidates the distribution and contribution of IL-17A, F and AF in inflammatory arthritis. Neutralizing antibody to IL-17A alone or IL-17F alone or in combination was utilized in the mouse collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) model to elucidate the contribution of each subtype in mediating inflammation. IL-17A, F and AF were all increased during inflammatory arthritis. Neutralization of IL-17A reduced the severity of arthritis, neutralization of IL-17A+IL-17F had the same effect as neutralizing IL-17A, while neutralization of IL-17F had no effect. Moreover, significantly higher levels of IL-17A and IL-17F were detected in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in comparison to patients with osteoarthritis (OA). IL-17A and AF were detected in synovial fluid mononuclear cells (SFMC) in RA and OA, with IL-17A being significantly higher in RA patients. Enriched CD3+ T cells from RA PBMCs produced singnificantly high levels of IL-17A and IL-17AF in comparison to OA peripheral blood CD3+ T cells. IL-17A, F and AF were undetectable in T cells from SFMCs from RA and OA. While IL-17A, F, and AF were all induced during CIA, IL-17A played a dominant role. Furthermore, production of IL-17A, and not IL-17F or IL-17AF, was elevated in PBMCs, SFMCs and enriched peripheral blood CD3+ T in RA.

Abstract
The structure of magnetron-sputtered Co/SiO2multilayers has been investigated using grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and ion scattering techniques. A theoretical description of diffuse X-ray scattering from three-dimensional self-assembled ensembles of nanoparticles is also presented. The data revealed that Co-rich nanoparticles self-organize in a three-dimensional lattice and a dependence of the lattice parameters as well as the mean particle size on the nominal layer thickness was observed. Originally amorphous Co-rich layers crystallize readily during deposition, creating both pure Co and Co oxide particles. The results presented are important for controlled production and reliable characterization of metallic nanoparticles in solid amorphous matrices, aiming to obtain a well ordered monodisperse ensemble of nanoparticles.

Abstract
The nucleus (154)Gd is located in a region of the nuclear chart where rapid changes of nuclear deformation occur as a function of particle number. It was investigated using a combination of γ-ray scattering experiments and a γγ-coincidence study following electron capture decay of (154)Tb(m). A novel decay channel from the scissors mode to the first excited 0(+) state was observed. Its transition strength was determined to B(M1;1(sc)(+)→0(2)(+))=0.031(4)μ(N)(2). The properties of the scissors mode of (154)Gd imply a much larger matrix element than previously thought for the neutrinoless double-β decay to the 0(2)(+) state in such a shape-transitional region. Theory indicates an even larger effect for (150)Nd.

Abstract
We present a generalization of the Dodson-Tsao kinematic model of misfit dislocation for graded SixGe1-x/Si(001) layers. The layers were prepared under different growing conditions (temperature). The misfit dislocation distribution has been determined by means of high-resolution x-ray scattering. Analysis of the reciprocal space maps was compared with the kinematic Dodson-Tsao model and the equilibrium Tersoff model.

Abstract
The pygmy dipole resonance has been studied in the proton-magic nucleus 124Sn with the (α, α'γ) coincidence method at Eα=136 MeV. The comparison with results of photon-scattering experiments reveals a splitting into two components with different structure: one group of states which is excited in (α, α'γ) as well as in (γ, γ') reactions and a group of states at higher energies which is only excited in (γ, γ') reactions. Calculations with the self-consistent relativistic quasiparticle time-blocking approximation and the quasiparticle phonon model are in qualitative agreement with the experimental results and predict a low-lying isoscalar component dominated by neutron-skin oscillations and a higher-lying more isovector component on the tail of the giant dipole resonance.

Abstract
Dendritic cells (DCs) are specialized antigen-presenting cells that migrate from the periphery to lymphoid tissues, where they activate and regulate T cells. Genetic modification of DCs to express immunoregulatory molecules would provide a new immunotherapeutic strategy for autoimmune and other diseases. We have engineered bone marrow-derived DCs that express IL-4 and tested the ability of these cells to control murine collagen-induced arthritis (CIA), a model for rheumatoid arthritis in which Th1 cells play a critical role. IL-4-transduced DCs inhibited Th1 responses to collagen type II in vitro. A single injection of IL-4-transduced DCs reduced the incidence and severity of CIA and suppressed established Th1 responses and associated humoral responses, despite only transient persistence of injected DCs in the spleen. In contrast, control DCs and IL-4-transduced T cells or fibroblastic cells failed to alter the course of the disease. The functional effects correlated well with the differential efficiency of DC migration from various sites of injection to lymphoid organs, especially the spleen. The ability of splenic T cells to produce IL-4 in response to anti-CD3 was enhanced after the administration of IL-4-transduced DCS: These results support the feasibility of using genetically modified DCs for the treatment of autoimmune disease.

Abstract
Synovial tissue in rheumatoid arthritis is characterized by infiltration with large numbers of T lymphocytes and APCs as well as hyperplasia of synovial fibroblasts. Current understanding of the pathogenesis of RA includes the concept that synovial fibroblasts, which are essential to cartilage and bone destruction, are regulated by cytokines derived primarily from monocyte-macrophage cells. Recently it has been found that synovial fibroblasts can also function as accessory cells for T cell activation by superantigens and other stimuli. We have now found that highly purified resting T cells, even in the absence of T cell mitogens, induce activation of synovial fibroblasts when cocultured for 6-24 h. Such activation was evident by induction or augmentation of mRNA for stromelysin, IL-6, and IL-8, gene products important in joint inflammation and joint destruction. Furthermore, increased production of IL-6 and IL-8 was quantitated by intracellular cytokine staining and flow cytometry. This technique, previously used for analysis of T cell function, was readily adaptable for assays of synovial fibroblasts. Resting T cells also induced synovial fibroblasts to produce PGE(2), indicating activation of expression of the cyclooxygenase 2 gene. Synergy was observed between the effects of IL-17, a cytokine derived from stimulated T cells that activates fibroblasts, and resting T lymphocytes. Various subsets of T cells, CD4(+), CD8(+), CD45RO(+), and CD45RA(+) all had comparable ability to induce synovial fibroblast activation. These results establish an Ag-independent effector function for resting T cells that is likely to be important in inflammatory compartments in which large numbers of T lymphocytes and fibroblasts can come into direct contact with each other.

Abstract
A multimedia touch-screen kiosk was used to assess food safety knowledge and convey food safety principles to 93 high school science teachers and 165 students. The kiosk program based on the FightBAC messages informed users of correct responses and reasons for the response. Teachers correctly answered more questions than students; however, for the areas of hand washing, sources of foodborne illness, and handling of leftover foods, at least 40% of both students and teachers provided incorrect answers.

Abstract
Activated T-cells are susceptible to induction of apoptosis or programmed cell death in response to ligation of several cell surface structures, including CD2, CD3, and CD95/Fas. These mechanisms may be important in the regulation of immune responses and in prevention of autoimmunity. We used flow cytometric quantitation of DNA strand breaks to detect T-cells committed to programmed cell death. Activated human peripheral blood T-lymphocytes, and freshly isolated human thymocytes underwent apoptosis when exposed to dexamethasone or to monoclonal antibodies directed at CD2 or CD3. Interleukin-2 reduced spontaneous or dexamethasone-induced apoptosis, but augmented apoptosis due to ligation of CD2. A neutralizing anti-Fas antibody reduced the amount of DNA strand breakage, not only in T-cells exposed to antibodies to CD2 or CD3, but also in dexamethasone-treated cultures. In vivo activated T-cells, from inflammatory synovial fluids, were sensitive to immediate induction of DNA strand breaks without prior in vitro activation by lectin and IL-2. Taken together, the results indicated that: 1. Human lymphocytes, like murine thymocytes, are sensitive to glucocorticoid-induced apoptosis, as well as to programmed cell death triggered through surface receptors; 2. The effects of IL-2 on T-cell apoptosis depend on the apoptotic stimulus; 3. Fas/Fas ligand interactions may be relevant for both membrane receptor and glucocorticoid-induced cell death; and 4. Induction of T-cell apoptosis may be important in therapeutic effects of glucocorticoids in human disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Allogeneic transfusion is associated with postoperative infections that significantly prolong hospital stays and increase costs. Recent studies suggest that filtering leukocytes from blood prior to transfusion reduces the risk of postoperative infection associated with blood transfusion. We compared the incidence of postoperative infections, hospital stays, and hospital charges of gastrointestinal surgery patients transfused with packed red cells or leukocyte-depleted cells. METHODS Consecutive patients admitted for elective gastrointestinal surgery without previous blood transfusion were randomized to receive routine packed red cells or packed red cells filtered to remove leukocytes if transfusion was required. Multivariate analysis was used to assess the significance of the relationship between leukocyte-depleted blood and postoperative infectious complications, postoperative stay, and hospital charges. RESULTS Fifty-nine (27%) of the 221 patients were transfused. The most significant variable related to transfusion was intraoperative blood loss (P <0.0001), followed by admission hematocrit (P <0.0001) and age (P = 0.0022). Infections were noted in 16% of the patients: 11% of untransfused patients, 16% of leukocyte-depleted blood recipients, and 44% of patients transfused with packed red cells. Both operative site and nosocomial infections were significantly (P <0.001) more frequent in patients transfused with packed red cells compared with patients transfused with leukocyte-depleted red cells. Postoperative stays averaged 9 days for untransfused patients, 12 days for leukocyte-depleted recipients, and 18 days for recipients of packed red cells. Hospital charges were $19,132, $33,954, and $41,002, respectively. Both transfusion and infection were significantly (P <0.001) related to postoperative stay in multivariate analysis. Hospital charges were significantly related to postoperative stay (P <0.001), blood loss (P <0.001), age (P <0.001), infection (P = 0.007), and randomization to packed red cells (P = 0.032). CONCLUSIONS Filtering blood of leukocytes prior to transfusion for elective gastrointestinal surgery is associated with lower risk of postoperative infection, shorter postoperative stays, and lower hospital charges.

Abstract
CD6 is a 130 000 MW T-cell surface glycoprotein that can deliver coactivating signals to mature T lymphocytes. Studies using monoclonal antibodies (mAb) have defined at least four epitopes on CD6, and distinct functional responses are elicited by mAb to the different epitopes. The function of CD6 is unknown. Multiple CD6 ligands are predicted, based on data that a soluble CD6 fusion protein precipitates at least three peptides. A cDNA clone for one of these ligands, termed activated leucocyte-cell adhesion molecule (ALCAM) has recently been isolated. In order to further characterize the role of CD6 in cell-cell interactions, we have examined the role of CD6 in a variety of responses by tetanus toxoid (TT) specific human T-cell clones. Anti-CD6 mAb UMCD6 (epitope 3) inhibits antigen-specific responses of such clones to TT, but not to the superantigen SEA. Responses of clones to nominal antigen are CD6-dependent using either peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) or macrophage-depleted E rosette negative cells as the antigen-presenting cell (APC) population. Furthermore, these clones made autoreactive with DNA methyltransferase inhibitors express increased CD6, and autoreactivity is inhibited by UMCD6. Taken together, the data suggests the existence of a functional CD6 ligand in peripheral blood which is expressed by APC, including cells other than macrophages. Interactions between CD6 and CD6 ligands may regulate both antigen specific and autoreactive responses of human T lymphocytes.

Abstract
Over 100 project staff, community coalition members, and other representatives from 10 comprehensive community health promotion projects in the western United States were surveyed two years into a three year funding cycle about: (1) the problems or obstacles they judged as preventing successful completion of their current goals and objectives, and (2) future goals and objectives they envisioned for their projects. The key issues confronting respondents were diverse, although issues around the process of implementing community health promotion programs were cited more frequently than issues related to the content of health promotion. When respondents were asked to prioritize Future Goals in the second survey, consensus across communities was obtained despite broad differences in the type of community surveyed and the health problem targeted. This study identifies the common organizational and community development problems faced by newly emerging community health promotion programs and has implications for other communities involved in designing, implementing, and evaluating community-wide health promotion programs.

Abstract
The college-aged female bodybuilders in this study consumed nutrient-dense, low-fat foods and participated in strenuous exercise to develop their physiques. Non-competitors maintained consistent energy intake, exercise patterns, and body weight throughout the study period. In contrast, competitors exhibited periods of caloric restriction and excess associated with the pre- and post-competition events. This study indicates that college-aged female bodybuilders have food intake and exercise patterns that are unique to the sport.

Abstract
This study reported on the dietary intake of the institutionalized diabetics consuming low-kilocalorie sweeteners or fructose. The dietary intake was comparable to that for nondiabetics and consistent with the data from NHANES II. Nutrient intakes for diabetics met 100% of the RDA when either sweetener was used. Because of the increase in carbohydrates from fructose, the percentage of calories from fat approximated more closely the 30% recommended for diabetic adults. When fructose diets were used, there was a decrease in sucrose intake, which may help keep serum glucose and insulin responses within a normal range. The additional energy from fructose probably had little negative effect on the institutionalized diabetic population (which was not obese) and may have provided energy for weight maintenance. The use of calorie-dense sweeteners with the general population of diabetics who tend to be overweight requires further study.

Abstract
A mail survey was conducted to describe Illinois consultant dietitians' perceptions of time adequacy for fulfilling role responsibilities and to identify dietary problems in nursing homes. Approximately three-fourths (74%) of the 43 respondents reported insufficient time at nursing homes, although all met or exceeded state consulting time requirements. Role functions receiving the greatest time investments were in the categories of foodservice management and nutrition care. Resident nutrition care issues were often rated as major problems. Dietitians' perceptions of nutrition care problems and inadequacy of time to perform role functions indicate a need to re-evaluate priorities for role performance and to obtain increased service hours. Methods to increase consulting time should include effective marketing of services and involvement in legislative and regulatory processes.

Abstract
Although there has been an increase in pregnancy in women over 35 years of age, the literature contains no information on dietary intakes of older pregnant women. Several studies have reported the nutritional status of pregnant adolescents who are considered to be at nutritional risk. This study investigated the energy, nutrient, and food intake patterns of 63 low-income pregnant women over 35 compared with 526 pregnant adolescents. Nutrient intake was assessed using a standardized 24-hour dietary recall protocol. Energy values for both groups were below recommended levels, and neither group gained the recommended amount of weight. Obesity may have been the reason for the lack of weight gain by the older pregnant women, since more than 50% of the older pregnant women were calculated to be obese prior to pregnancy. The younger women reported consuming less milk but more snack foods with lower nutrient densities, which significantly increased their energy values over those of the older group. In comparison with diets reported in other studies, the diets of the older pregnant women were more nutrient dense for most nutrients. Although all participants were enrolled in WIC, an equal number of women from both groups stated that they did not have the supplemental foods in their households at the time of interview.

Abstract
Sodium intake of infants varies widely with the type of food consumed. However, few reports are available describing the nutrients, including sodium values, of dietary intakes of infants receiving supplemental foods. The purpose of this study was to determine the sodium, energy, and nutrient values of diets for infants from low-income families participating in the WIC program. The sample consisted of 306 infants, aged 4 through 7 months, who were seen in well-child clinics. Approximately 200 of the infants were reportedly fed commercially prepared baby food as the only solid food; 55 received 50% or more of their energy from table foods. The dietary intakes of infants receiving supplemental foods and consuming commercially prepared baby foods included significantly less sodium than the intakes of infants fed primarily table foods. As a group, all infants met the RDAs for most nutrients but had higher sodium values than reported by other researchers. The group of infants for whom consumption of table foods was reported had values above the acceptable range for sodium primarily because the caregivers failed to provide low-sodium, nutrient-dense, supplemental foods in the quantities prescribed but instead substituted sodium-dense meat and vegetable products.

Abstract
In brief: This study examined the effects of nutrition education (through individual counseling) on the body composition and diet patterns of 39 female college athletes. Anthropometric and diet data were collected before and after the playing season. Ten of the athletes received individual nutrition counseling during the season and comprised group 1; the other 29 made up group 2. Neither group met the recommended dietary allowance for energy before or after the season, but group 1 significantly lowered fat and cholesterol levels and increased carbohydrate and fiber intakes. The findings suggest that individual counseling is effective in improving the diet quality of female athletes.

Abstract
The relationship between the nutrition knowledge and attitudes and dietary practices of adolescent female athletes was studied, using a 24-hour recall and a 48-hour food record with a modified version of the self-administered knowledge and attitude questionnaire of Werblow et al. Analysis indicated that the diets were similar to those of other teenage girls in the United States. The calculated mean values for vitamins A and C were more than 100% of the RDAs, while those for calcium and iron were less than 67% of the allowances. The mean energy value was less than recommended and may have been inadequate for the active subjects. Food consumption analysis showed that of total servings, the milk and meat groups accounted for only about 10% each and that more than 30% came from the "others" group. Although the subjects had some common misconceptions about nutrition, they were generally knowledgeable as well as positive in their attitudes toward nutrition. Nutrition knowledge and attitudes were positively correlated, indicating that the more nutrition knowledge a subject had, the more positive was the attitude toward nutrition, and vice versa. However, no significant correlation was found between nutrition knowledge or attitudes and dietary intake, suggesting that factors other than nutrition knowledge and attitudes, such as a concern for weight and a dependence on others for food selection, played a role in determining the food practices of the subjects.

Abstract
A new application of the Optical Character Reader (OCR) system for dietary data tabulation has been presented. Comparison of the reproducibility of energy and nutrient values, when hand calculation, on-line computer, and OCR methods of calculation are used, revealed no significant differences. The OCR system increased turn-around time for obtaining results, but use of a clinician's time was greatly reduced in comparison to either the hand calculation or the on-line computer method. Once the initial investment for an OCR system had been made, a significant reduction was realized in the cost of a clinician's time used for energy and nutrient calculations. When the factors of reproducibility, time, and cost were considered, this study found the OCR method for dietary calculations as acceptable as either hand calculation or on-line computer methods. Clinicans using the OCR or hand calculation method did not need computer facilities, but computer keyboard terminals were required for the on-line method.
