Abstract
Michael-aldol domino reactions are powerful tools for rapidly assembling carbocyclic scaffolds. We herein disclose a base-catalyzed Michael-aldol domino reaction of trisubstituted Michael acceptors with β-keto ester nucleophiles. The cyclohexanone products are obtained in excellent diastereoselectivity (up to >20:1 dr) and good yields (up to 84%). An attractive practical consideration is that pure products are isolated directly via filtration of the unpurified reaction mixtures. Further functionalization of the cyclohexanones is achieved without perturbation of stereocenters installed through the preceding annulation.

Abstract
Altered reward processing has been implicated in the onset and maintenance of binge-eating disorder (BED). However, it is unclear which precise neurocognitive reward processes may contribute to BED. In the present study, 40 individuals with BED and 40 age-, sex-, and BMI-matched controls completed a reward (incentive delay) task while their neural activity was recorded using electroencephalography (EEG). Individuals with BED also completed a 10-day ecological momentary assessment (EMA) protocol assessing binge-eating behavior in the natural environment. Event-related potential (ERP) analysis of the EEG indicated that individuals with BED had stronger anticipatory (CNV) and outcome-related (RewP) neural reward activity to food and monetary rewards, compared to controls. However, within the BED group, greater frequency of binge eating during the EMA protocol was associated with stronger anticipatory (CNV) but weaker outcome-related (RewP) neural reward activity. These associations within the BED group were unique to food, and not monetary, rewards. Although preliminary, these results suggest that both anticipatory ("wanting") and outcome ("liking") reward processes may be generally amplified in BED. However, they also suggest that among individuals with BED, disorder severity may be associated with increased anticipatory reward processes ("wanting"), but relatively decreased reward-outcome processing ("liking"), of food rewards specifically.

Abstract
Aminoindanol-derived bis(oxazoline) ligands are widely used in metal-catalyzed transformations, but the synthesis of structural derivatives is challenging. We report the gram-scale, seven-step synthesis of five bromine-functionalized inda(box) ligands that have varied bridge substituents. The bromoinda(box) ligands undergo late-stage modification via Pd-catalyzed cross-couplings, which allows for the synthesis of twelve unique inda(box) ligands. This complementary synthetic route could enable the discovery of new asymmetric metal-catalyzed transformations through the modification of the inda(box) ligand architecture.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Human behaviors, thoughts, and emotions are guided by memories of the past. Thus, there can be little doubt that memory plays a fundamental role in the behaviors (e.g., binging), thoughts (e.g., body-image concerns), and emotions (e.g., guilt) that characterize eating disorders (EDs). Although a growing body of research has begun to investigate the role of memory in EDs, this literature is limited in numerous ways and has yet to be integrated into an overarching framework. METHODS In the present article, we provide an operational framework for characterizing different domains of memory, briefly review existing ED memory research within this framework, and highlight crucial gaps in the literature. RESULTS We distinguish between three domains of memory-episodic, procedural, and working-which differ based on functional attributes and underlying neural systems. Most recent ED memory research has focused on procedural memory broadly defined (e.g., reinforcement learning), and findings within all three memory domains are highly mixed. Further, few studies have attempted to assess these different domains simultaneously, though most behavior is achieved through coordination and competition between memory systems. We, therefore, offer recommendations for how to move ED research forward within each domain of memory and how to study the interactions between memory systems, using illustrative examples from other areas of basic and clinical research. DISCUSSION A stronger and more integrated understanding of the mechanisms that connect memory of past experiences to present ED behavior may yield more comprehensive theoretical models of EDs that guide novel treatment approaches. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE Memories of previous eating-related experiences may contribute to the onset and maintenance of eating disorders (EDs). However, research on the role of memory in EDs is limited, and distinct domains of ED memory research are rarely connected. We, therefore, offer a framework for organizing, progressing, and integrating ED memory research, to provide a better foundation for improving ED treatment and intervention going forward.

Abstract
(Diene)Rh(I) complexes catalyze the stereoselective three-component coupling of silyl glyoxylates, arylboronic acids, and aldehydes to give glycolate aldol products. The participation of Rh-alkoxides in the requisite Brook rearrangement was established through two component Rh-catalyzed couplings of silyl glyoxylates with ArB(OH)2 to give silyl-protected mandelate derivatives. The intermediacy of a chiral Rh-enolate was inferred through enantioselective protonation using a chiral Rh-catalyst. Diastereoselective three-component couplings with aldehydes as terminating electrophiles to give racemic products were best achieved with a bulky aryl ester on the silyl glyoxylate reagent. Optimal enantioselective couplings were carried out with the tert-butyl ester variant using an anisole-derived enantiopure tricyclo[3.2.2.02,4 ]nonadiene ligand.

Abstract
The synthesis of heretofore unknown γ-spirobutenolides has been achieved via an m-CPBA-mediated oxidation of β-furyl amides. The reaction employs a tethered amide, ostensibly a poorly reactive carbonyl, as a nontraditional nucleophile resulting in spirolactone formation and concurrent amide cleavage. The transformation exhibits functional group tolerance and compatibility with complex compounds. In situ 1H NMR spectroscopic studies reveal the identities of key intermediates in the oxidation-spirolactonization-oxidation cascade, suggesting a plausible mechanistic pathway. The distinct diastereofaces of the electrophilic butenolide product may be used for diastereoselective cycloaddition and conjugate addition reactions.

Abstract
Asymmetric Michael additions are powerful tools to meet the growing need for stereochemically complex products. While 1,3-dicarbonyls are common nucleophiles, the successful use of configurationally unstable β-keto esters in diastereoselective variants remains understudied. In this Letter, crystalline β-keto esters were leveraged in a two-phase, one-pot merger of an asymmetric Michael addition with a crystallization-induced diastereomer transformation. Tuning the crystallinity of β-keto ester adducts enabled stereoconvergence of the products, which were isolated by filtration.

Abstract
Ligands containing ferrocene backbones often feature both planar chirality and asymmetric centers, making them attractive options for asymmetric catalysis. Ugi's amine is a ubiquitous ferrocene-based chiral building block that can be functionalized to form a variety of tunable Josiphos ligands; however, few sources lay out the route from start to finish. Starting from ferrocene, we compile a synthetic route to an air- and moisture-stable copper(I)-Josiphos complex via enantiopure Ugi's amine, providing a potential one-stop shop for the synthesis of a wide range of Josiphos ligands.

Abstract
This Account describes new reactions that have been developed in the Johnson laboratories at UNC Chapel Hill enabled by considerations of N-O bond cleavage. Three main case studies are highlighted: the metal-catalyzed electrophilic amination of O-acyl hydroxyl amines, multihetero-Cope rearrangements driven by O-N bond breakage, and merged dearomatization/N=O cycloadditions for the synthesis of complex 4-aminocyclohexanols such as those found in the natural product tetrodotoxin.

Abstract
Enantioconvergent iso-Pictet-Spengler reactions of chiral racemic ß-formyl esters and a ß-keto ester are reported, providing complex tetrahydro-γ-carbolines containing two contiguous stereocenters. The reactions are catalyzed by a chiral thiourea and benzoic acid cocatalytic system and constitute rare cases of nonhydrogenative stereoconvergent additions to racemic α-stereogenic-ß-dicarbonyls. Elaboration of the products to chiral aminoalcohols and carbamates is demonstrated.

Abstract
A bifunctional iminophosphorane (BIMP)-catalyzed method for the synthesis of densely functionalized cyclohexanols establishes five contiguous stereocenters (diastereoselection up to >20:1, enantioselectivity up to >99:1) in a Michael/aldol domino reaction between trisubstituted electrophilic alkenes and γ-nitroketones. Mechanistic studies suggest a scenario in which stereoconvergency is achieved by kinetically controlled cyclization after the initial diastereodivergent Michael addition. Diastereoconvergency during cyclization is shown to result from Curtin-Hammett kinetics, a finding that contrasts the crystallization-driven stereoconvergency previously reported in similar systems. Despite the change in the stereocontrol mechanism, the operational attributes remain attractive, with the crystalline products typically isolated in analytically pure form upon filtration of the reaction mixture.

Abstract
The synthesis of chiral α-monosubstituted-ß-dicarbonyls is a challenging task in asymmetric catalysis due to the rapid, typically uncontrolled, product racemization or epimerization under most reaction conditions. For this reason, diastereoselective additions of unsubstituted ß-dicarbonyls to π-electrophiles are unusual. Herein, we disclose a simple catalytic crystallization-driven enantio- and diastereoselective Mannich reaction for the synthesis of stereodefined α-monosubstituted-ß-keto esters, dissymmetric ß-diesters, dissymmetric ß-diketones, and ß-keto amides that productively leverages product epimerization in solution. Mechanistic studies suggest a scenario where the initial enantioselective, diastereodivergent skeletal assembly is catalyzed by a chiral tertiary amine organocatalyst, which then facilitates second stage crystallization-induced diastereoconvergence to provide the challenging α-stereocenter in excellent stereoselectivity.

Abstract
The synthesis of novel tetrahydroquinoline-containing spirocycles has been achieved through an acid-promoted dearomatization of cyclic diarylhydrazines. The reaction, proceeding through a dearomative o-semidine rearrangement, furnishes a stable, yet reactive spirocyclohexadieniminium ion, which can further be used as an electrophile or a diene in a one-pot sequence. These transformations efficiently produce novel diazaspirocycles and allow for further synthetic elaboration of the cyclohexadienamine products.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Reward-related processes have been posited as key mechanisms underlying the onset and persistence of eating disorders, prompting a growing body of research in this area. Existing studies have primarily utilized self-report, behavioral, and functional magnetic resonance imaging measures to interrogate reward among individuals with eating disorders. However, limitations inherent in each of these methods (e.g., poor temporal resolution) may obscure distinct neurocognitive reward processes, potentially contributing to underdeveloped models of reward dysfunction within eating disorders. The temporal precision of event-related potentials (ERPs), derived from electroencephalography, may thus offer a powerful complementary tool for elucidating the neurocognitive underpinnings of reward. Indeed, a considerable amount of research in other domains of psychopathology (e.g., depression, substance use disorders), as well as studies investigating food reward among non-clinical samples, highlights the utility of ERPs for probing reward processes. However, no study to date has utilized ERPs to directly examine reward functioning in eating disorders. METHODS In this paper, we review evidence underscoring the clinical utility of ERP measures of reward, as well as a variety of reward-related tasks that can be used to elicit specific ERP components with demonstrated relevance to reward processing. We then consider the ways in which these tasks/components may be used to help answer a variety of open questions within the eating disorders literature on reward. RESULTS/DISCUSSION Given the promise of ERP measures of reward to the field of eating disorders, we ultimately hope to spur and guide research in this currently neglected area. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE Abnormalities in reward functioning appear to contribute to eating disorders. Event-related potentials (ERPs) offer temporally precise measures of neurocognitive reward processing and thus may be important tools for understanding the relationship between reward and disordered eating. However, research in this area is currently lacking. This paper attempts to facilitate the use of ERPs to study reward among individuals with eating disorders by reviewing the relevant theories and methods.

Abstract
Tetrasubstituted stereogenic carbon centers bearing a nitrogen substituent represent important motifs in medicinal chemistry and natural products; therefore, the development of efficient methods for the stereoselective synthesis of this class of compounds continues to be an important problem. This article describes stereoconvergent Henry reactions of γ,γ-disubstituted nitroalkanes to deliver highly functionalized building blocks containing up to five contiguous stereogenic centers including a fully substituted [N]-asymmetric center. Henry reactions of higher order nitroalkanes are often characterized by their reversibility and minimal accompanying thermodynamic stereocontrol. In contrast, mechanistic studies for the present case suggest a scenario in which reversibility is productively leveraged through crystallization-based stereocontrol, thereby enabling the efficient sequential π-additions of readily accessible starting materials to assemble complex acyclic stereoarrays.

Abstract
Synthetic methods that enable simultaneous control over multiple stereogenic centers are desirable for the efficient preparation of pharmaceutical compounds. Herein, we report the discovery and development of a catalyst-mediated asymmetric Michael addition/crystallization-induced diastereomer transformation of broad scope. The sequence controls three stereogenic centers, two of which are stereochemically labile. The configurational instability of 1,3-dicarbonyls and nitroalkanes, typically considered a liability in stereoselective synthesis, is productively leveraged by merging enantioselective Brønsted base organocatalysis and thermodynamic stereocontrol using a single convergent crystallization. The synthesis of useful γ-nitro β-keto amides containing three contiguous stereogenic centers is thus achieved from Michael acceptors containing two prochiral centers.

Abstract
An efficient synthesis of chiral nonracemic diene ligands is facilitated by an enantioselective dearomative intermolecular arene cyclopropanation of anisole. The functionality of the resulting cycloheptatriene engenders distinct chemical environments in a downstream tricyclic bis(enol) triflate that permits selective late-stage functionalization. The synthesis of diverse C1- and pseudo-C2-symmetric dienes is therefore viable by iterative palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. The ligands provide moderate to high selectivities in known Rh(I)-mediated asymmetric transformations.

Abstract
Progress toward a stereoselective synthesis of tetrodotoxin (TTX) is presented. Oxidative dearomatization of a tetrasubstituted guaiacol arene yielded a masked ortho-benzoquinone that intercepted an acyl nitroso species generated in situ by the copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of an acyl hydroxylamine. The subsequent alkene dihydroxylation and reduction of a bis-neopentylic ketone proceeded with perfect diastereoselectivity to reveal advanced intermediates toward the synthesis of TTX.

Stereodivergent Nucleophilic Additions to Racemic β-Oxo Acid Derivatives: Fast Addition Outcompetes Stereoconvergence in the Archetypal Configurationally Unstable Electrophile. Abstract
Additions of carbon nucleophiles to racemic α-stereogenic β-oxo acid derivatives that deliver enantiomerically enriched tertiary alcohols are valuable, but uncommon. This article describes stereodivergent Cu-catalyzed borylative cyclizations of racemic β-oxo acid derivatives bearing tethered pro-nucleophilic olefins to deliver highly functionalized cyclopentanols containing four contiguous stereogenic centers. The reported protocol is applicable to a range of β-oxo acid derivatives, and the diastereomeric products are readily isolable by typical chromatographic techniques. α-Stereogenic-β-keto esters are typically thought to have extreme or spontaneous configurational fragility, but mechanistic studies for this system reveal an unusual scenario wherein productive catalysis occurs on the same time scale as background substrate racemization and completely outcompetes on-cycle epimerization, even under the basic conditions of the reaction.

Abstract
Selective attention is necessary to sift through, form a coherent percept of, and make behavioral decisions on the vast amount of information present in most sensory environments. How and where selective attention is employed in cortex and how this perceptual information then informs the relevant behavioral decisions is still not well understood. Studies probing selective attention and decision-making in visual cortex have been enlightening as to how sensory attention might work in that modality; whether or not similar mechanisms are employed in auditory attention is not yet clear. Therefore, we trained rhesus macaques on a feature-selective attention task, where they switched between reporting changes in temporal (amplitude modulation, AM) and spectral (carrier bandwidth) features of a broadband noise stimulus. We investigated how the encoding of these features by single neurons in primary (A1) and secondary (middle lateral belt, ML) auditory cortex was affected by the different attention conditions. We found that neurons in A1 and ML showed mixed selectivity to the sound and task features. We found no difference in AM encoding between the attention conditions. We found that choice-related activity in both A1 and ML neurons shifts between attentional conditions. This finding suggests that choice-related activity in auditory cortex does not simply reflect motor preparation or action and supports the relationship between reported choice-related activity and the decision and perceptual process.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We recorded from primary and secondary auditory cortex while monkeys performed a nonspatial feature attention task. Both areas exhibited rate-based choice-related activity. The manifestation of choice-related activity was attention dependent, suggesting that choice-related activity in auditory cortex does not simply reflect arousal or motor influences but relates to the specific perceptual choice.

Abstract
Study objectives were to evaluate the effects of replacing 40 mg/kg of dietary Zn from Zn sulfate (ZS) with Zn amino acid complex (ZA; Zinpro Corporation, Eden Prairie, MN) on inflammation and intestinal integrity in heat-stressed and pair-fed (PF) ruminants. Forty Holstein steers (173.6 ± 4.9 kg) were randomly assigned to 1 of 5 dietary-environmental treatments: (1) thermoneutral (TN) ad libitum with 75 mg/kg of dry matter (DM) ZS (ZSCON); (2) TN pair-fed with 75 mg/kg DM ZS (ZSPF); (3) TN pair-fed with 40 mg/kg DM ZA and 35 mg/kg DM ZS (ZAPF); (4) heat stress (HS) ad libitum with 75 mg/kg DM ZS (ZSHS); and (5) HS ad libitum 40 mg/kg DM ZA and 35 mg/kg DM ZS (ZAHS). Before study initiation, calves were fed their respective diets for 21 d. Following the pre-feeding phase, steers were transferred into environmental chambers and were subjected to 2 successive experimental periods. During period 1 (5 d), all steers were fed their respective diets ad libitum and housed in TN conditions (20.2 ± 1.4°C, 30.4 ± 4.3% relative humidity). During period 2 (6 d), ZSHS and ZAHS steers were exposed to cyclical HS conditions (27.1 ± 1.5°C to 35.0 ± 2.9°C, 19.3 ± 3.5% relative humidity), whereas the ZSCON, ZSPF, and ZAPF steers remained in TN conditions and were fed ad libitum or pair-fed relative to their ZSHS and ZAHS counterparts. Overall, steers exposed to HS had markedly increased rectal temperature (0.83°C), respiration rate (26 breaths per min), and skin temperature (8.00°C) relative to TN treatments. Rectal temperature from ZAHS steers was decreased (0.24°C) on d 4 to 6 of HS relative to ZSHS steers. Regardless of diet, HS decreased DMI (18%) relative to ZSCON steers. Circulating glucose from HS and PF steers decreased (16%) relative to ZSCON steers. Heat stress and nutrient restriction increased circulating nonesterified fatty acids 2- and 3-fold, respectively, compared with ZSCON steers. Serum amyloid A increased ~2-fold in PF relative to ZSCON and HS steers. We detected no treatment effect on blood pH; however, ZAHS steers had increased HCO3 relative to ZSHS. Relative to ZSHS, ZAHS steers had increased jejunum villi height (25%), a tendency for increased ileum villi height (9%), and decreased duodenal villi width (16%). In summary, ZA supplementation has some beneficial effects on thermal indices, intestinal architecture characteristics, and biomarkers of leaky gut in heat-stressed steers, indicative of an ameliorated heat load, and thus may be a nutritional strategy to minimize negative consequences of HS.

Abstract
In macaques, the middle lateral auditory cortex (ML) is a belt region adjacent to the primary auditory cortex (A1) and believed to be at a hierarchically higher level. Although ML single-unit responses have been studied for several auditory stimuli, the ability of ML cells to encode amplitude modulation (AM)-an ability that has been widely studied in A1-has not yet been characterized. Here, we compared the responses of A1 and ML neurons to amplitude-modulated (AM) noise in awake macaques. Although several of the basic properties of A1 and ML responses to AM noise were similar, we found several key differences. ML neurons were less likely to phase lock, did not phase lock as strongly, and were more likely to respond in a nonsynchronized fashion than A1 cells, consistent with a temporal-to-rate transformation as information ascends the auditory hierarchy. ML neurons tended to have lower temporally (phase-locking) based best modulation frequencies than A1 neurons. Neurons that decreased their firing rate in response to AM noise relative to their firing rate in response to unmodulated noise became more common at the level of ML than they were in A1. In both A1 and ML, we found a prevalent class of neurons that usually have enhanced rate responses relative to responses to the unmodulated noise at lower modulation frequencies and suppressed rate responses relative to responses to the unmodulated noise at middle modulation frequencies.NEW & NOTEWORTHY ML neurons synchronized less than A1 neurons, consistent with a hierarchical temporal-to-rate transformation. Both A1 and ML had a class of modulation transfer functions previously unreported in the cortex with a low-modulation-frequency (MF) peak, a middle-MF trough, and responses similar to unmodulated noise responses at high MFs. The results support a hierarchical shift toward a two-pool opponent code, where subtraction of neural activity between two populations of oppositely tuned neurons encodes AM.

Abstract
The synthesis of the stereotriad core in the eastern portion of the Veratrum alkaloids jervine (1), cyclopamine (2), and veratramine (3) is reported. Starting from a known β-methyltyrosine derivative (8), the route utilizes a diastereoselective substrate-controlled 1,2-reduction to establish the stereochemistry of the vicinal amino alcohol motif embedded within the targets. Oxidative dearomatization is demonstrated to be a viable approach for the synthesis of the spirocyclic DE ring junction found in jervine and cyclopamine.

Abstract
Progress toward a convergent approach for the enantioselective synthesis of the Veratrum alkaloid jervine is presented. The two requisite fragments were stereoselectively and efficiently fashioned from economical and readily available reagents. Key reactions include (a) a highly diastereoselective Ireland-Claisen rearrangement to establish the necessary cis-relationship between the amine and methyl group on the tetrahydrofuran E-ring; (b) a diastereoselective selenoetherification reaction that enabled the assembly of the D/E oxaspiro[4.5]decene in the needed configuration; and (c) an enzymatic desymmetrization of an abundant achiral diol en route to a key four-carbon building block as a practical alternative to a protected Roche ester reduction.

Abstract
Arene cyclopropanation offers a direct route to higher-order, non-aromatic carbocycles; however, the inherent issue of dictating site selectivity has cumbered the development of novel intermolecular reactions that directly engage the arene pool. This paper describes a highly regio- and stereoselective, Rh2[(S)-PTTL]4-catalyzed arene cyclopropanation using α-cyanodiazoacetates to afford stable norcaradienes bearing three stereogenic centers, one of which is an all-carbon quaternary center. The enantioenriched norcaradienes served as tunable templates for further transformation into stereochemically dense, fused and bicyclic carbocycles containing transmutable functionality.

Abstract
Catalyzed stereoconvergent 1,4-additions to unsaturated carbonyls are rare but of high potential value. This letter details the development of enantioselective arylation reactions of boronic acids and β,γ-butenolides. These reactions are catalyzed by commercially available hydroxy[(S)-BINAP]-rhodium(I) dimer to afford stereochemically complex γ-butyrolactone derivatives. The reaction products provide functionality amenable to further manipulation and can lead to products with up to three contiguous stereocenters. The reaction proceeds under a dynamic kinetic resolution manifold by isomerizing the achiral starting material into an interconverting mixture of enantiomeric conjugate acceptors, followed by catalyst-controlled, enantiomer-selective 1,4-addition. Base-promoted racemization of the intermediate α,β-butenolide is possible due to the high kinetic and thermodynamic acidity of the γ-proton.

Abstract
Phenols are attractive starting materials for the preparation of highly substituted cyclohexane rings via dearomative processes. Herein we report an efficient preparation of dearomatized 1-oxaspiro[2.5]octa-4,7-dien-6-ones (para-spiroepoxydienones) via the nucleophilic epoxidation of in situ generated para-quinone methides from 4-(hydroxymethyl)phenols using aqueous H2O2. The developed protocol bypasses the need for stoichiometric bismuth reagents or diazomethane, which are frequently deployed for p-spiroepoxydienone preparation. The p-spiroepoxydienones are further elaborated in numerous downstream complexity-building transformations.

Abstract
Feedstock aromatic compounds are compelling low-cost starting points from which molecular complexity can be generated rapidly via oxidative dearomatization. Oxidative dearomatizations commonly rely heavily on hypervalent iodine or heavy metals to provide the requisite thermodynamic driving force for overcoming aromatic stabilization energy. This article describes oxidative dearomatizations of 2-(hydroxymethyl)phenols via their derived bis(dichloroacetates) using hydrogen peroxide as a mild oxidant that intercepts a transient quinone methide. A stereochemical study revealed that the reaction proceeds by a new mechanism relative to other phenol dearomatizations and is complementary to extant methods that rely on hypervalent iodine. Using a new chiral phase-transfer catalyst, the first asymmetric syntheses of 1-oxaspiro[2.5]octa-5,7-dien-4-ones were reported. The synthetic utility of the derived 1-oxaspiro[2.5]octadienones products is demonstrated in a downstream complexity-generating transformation.

Abstract
Access to WM can be restricted on the basis of goal-relevant properties such as spatial location. However, the extent of voluntary control over which features of an attended multi-feature object are encoded and maintained in WM is debated. Some evidence suggests that attending to an object leads to obligatory storage of all of its features, whereas other evidence suggests that access to WM can be restricted to only goal-relevant features. Another possibility is that all features are initially encoded, but irrelevant features are removed from WM over time. To address these various possibilities, we used pattern classification of EEG signals to track the temporal evolution of representations reflecting the encoding and storage of task-relevant and irrelevant features in WM. In different blocks, participants remembered the orientation, color or both orientation and color of a colored, oriented grating. The color and orientation of the grating was randomly drawn from two distinct feature bins on each trial. To examine trial-specific activity reflecting storage of the object's features, a support vector machine (SVM) classifier was trained to classify what bin the stimulus features came from. Importantly, for orientation, the classifier produced reliably above-chance classification across the delay when orientation was task-relevant but not when it was task-irrelevant. Interestingly, orientation could be accurately classified on trials for which both orientation and color were remembered. Moreover, a separate measure corresponding to the probability of a feature belonging to the correct bin was significantly higher when orientation was task-relevant compared to task-irrelevant during encoding. Above-chance classification for color was only present during the initial 500 msec across all conditions. Our results suggest that although information about all of an object's features is present in the initial stimulus-evoked neural response, information about the task-irrelevant features is attenuated during stimulus encoding and is largely absent throughout the delay.

Abstract
Enantio- and diastereoselective conjugate addition reactions between nitroethane or nitropropane and enone diesters are reported. A bifunctional triaryliminophosphorane catalyzed the addition reaction with consistently excellent stereoselectivities and yields across a wide range of substrates. By the use of the gem-diester functional handle present in the adducts, local desymmetrization via diastereotopic group discrimination was demonstrated, and a polyfunctionalized lactam with three contiguous stereocenters was synthesized.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In recent years there has been increasing clinical and empirical interest in neurocognitive functioning in eating disorders (EDs), which has resulted in numerous quantitative and qualitative reviews. However, there has yet to be a comprehensive synthesis or critical review of this literature to identify future directions to advance the field in this area. Therefore the aim of this systematic review of systematic reviews was to (a) characterize the existing literature on neurocognitive functioning in EDs based on recent reviews (i.e., published since 2010), (b) describe related limitations, and (c) suggest avenues for future research to address gaps in the current literature. METHOD Electronic databases were queried for reviews of neurocognitive domains (i.e., inhibitory control, decision-making, central coherence, set-shifting, working memory, and attention bias) in EDs, which identified 28 systematic and meta-analytic reviews. RESULTS Broadly, the literature indicates deficits across these neurocognitive domains in EDs, though heterogeneity was noted in the magnitude of these effects, which varied to some extent across ED subtypes, sample characteristics, and methodological approaches. DISCUSSION While these reviews have generally suggested varying patterns of neurocognitive deficits across EDs, there remain critical limitations regarding the methodological quality of these studies (e.g., the lack of prospective designs, consideration of confounding influences, or examination of interrelationships between neurocognitive domains and relationships between neurocognition and other relevant behavioral constructs). Specifically, we outline 10 key areas that are imperative to address in future research in this area in order to move our field forward.

Abstract
Ozonolysis of the Diels-Alder adducts derived from benzene oxides and N-alkylmaleimides resulted in fully substituted, meso bicyclic systems bearing six contiguous stereocenters, isolated as diols upon reductive workup with NaBH4. Variation in the workup allowed for isolation of two different diastereoisomers, through double epimerization of the imide stereocenters. Desymmetrization of the resulting meso diols via asymmetric nucleophilic epoxide opening and acylation reactions provided access to highly substituted, enantioenriched fused rings.

Determining the effects of early gestation in utero heat stress on postnatal fasting heat production and circulating biomarkers associated with metabolism in growing pigs. Abstract
The study objective was to characterize effects of early gestation in utero heat stress (IUHS) on postnatal fasting heat production (FHP) and blood biomarkers associated with metabolism in growing pigs. Based on previous observation of increased postnatal core body temperature set point in IUHS pigs, we hypothesized that FHP would be altered during postnatal life because of IUHS. Pregnant first-parity gilts were exposed to thermoneutral (TN; = 4; 17.8 ± 0.1°C) or heat stress (HS; = 4; cyclical 28 to 38°C) conditions from d 30 to 60 of gestation. At weaning (21 d of age), 2 median-weight male pigs (1 barrow and 1 boar) were selected from each litter ( = 8 in utero TN [IUTN] and 8 IUHS pigs) and then housed in TN conditions based on age. Blood samples were collected at 8, 9, and 10 wk of age when pigs were in a fed state to analyze thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) concentrations. Pigs were trained to enter an indirect calorimeter from wk 8 through 10 of life and then acclimated over a 24-h period 1 wk prior to testing. At 12 wk of age, pigs were fasted for 24 h, and then indirect calorimetry was performed on individual pigs over a 23-h testing period to determine FHP and the respiratory quotient in 3 intervals (0900 to 1700 h, 1700 to 0000 h, and 0000 to 0800 h). Body weight was determined before and after testing and was similar for all pigs ( = 0.77; 37.0 ± 0.5 kg BW). Data were analyzed using PROC MIXED in SAS 9.4. No boar vs. barrow differences were observed with any analysis. Overall, FHP per kilogram BW was greater ( = 0.03; 12.1%) in IUHS pigs compared with IUTN pigs. Fasting heat production per kilogram BW was greater ( < 0.01; 19.8%) from 0900 to 1700 h compared with 1700 to 0000 h and 0000 to 0800 h and was greater (10.9%) from 1700 to 0000 h compared with 0000 to 0800 h. The RQ did not differ by in utero treatment ( = 0.51; 0.72 ± 0.01); however, the RQ was increased ( < 0.01; 13.0%) from 1700 to 0000 h compared with 0900 to 1700 h and 0000 to 0800 h. No other FHP and RQ differences were detected. Although no in utero treatment differences were observed for T4 ( = 0.11; 52.2 ± 6.2 ng/mL), T3 was greater overall ( = 0.04; 19.5%) in IUHS pigs than in IUTN pigs. In summary, FHP and circulating T3 were increased in IUHS pigs, and this may have implications for postnatal production efficiency in pigs gestated during hot summer months.

An asymmetric sulfa-Michael addition of alkyl thiols to enone diesters is reported. The reaction is catalyzed by a bifunctional triaryliminophosphorane-thiourea organocatalyst and provides a range of α-sulfaketones in high yields and enantioselectivities. Leveraging the gem-diester functional handle via a subsequent diastereotopic group discrimination generates functionalized lactones with three contiguous stereocenters.

Abstract
Heat stress (HS) negatively impacts several swine production variables, including carcass fat quality and quantity. Pigs reared in HS have more adipose tissue than energetically predicted, explainable, in part, by HS-induced hyperinsulinemia. Study objectives were to evaluate insulin's role in altering fat characteristics during HS via feeding insulin-sensitizing compounds. Forty crossbred barrows (113 ± 9 kg BW) were randomly assigned to one of five environment by diet treatments: 1) thermoneutral (TN) fed ad libitum (TNAL), 2) TN and pair-fed (TNPF), 3) HS fed ad libitum (HSAL), 4) HS fed ad libitum with sterculic oil (SO) supplementation (HSSO; 13 g/d), and 5) HS fed ad libitum with dietary chromium (Cr) supplementation (HSCr; 0.5 mg/d; Kemin Industries, Des Moines, IA). The study consisted of three experimental periods (P). During P0 (2 d), all pigs were exposed to TN conditions (23 ± 3 °C, 68 ± 10% RH) and fed ad libitum. During P1 (7 d), all pigs received their respective dietary supplements, were maintained in TN conditions, and fed ad libitum. During P2 (21 d), HSAL, HSSO, and HSCr pigs were fed ad libitum and exposed to cyclical HS conditions (28 to 33 °C, 58 ± 10% RH). The TNAL and TNPF pigs remained in TN conditions and were fed ad libitum or pair-fed to their HSAL counterparts. Rectal temperature (TR), respiration rate (RR), and skin temperature (TS) were obtained daily at 0600 and 1800 h. At 1800 h, HS exposed pigs had increased TR, RR, and TS relative to TNAL controls (1.13 °C, 48 bpm, and 3.51 °C, respectively; P < 0.01). During wk 2 and 3 of P2, HSSO pigs had increased 1800 h TR relative to HSAL and HSCr (~0.40 and ~0.42 °C, respectively; P ≤ 0.05). Heat stress decreased ADFI and ADG compared to TNAL pigs (2.24 vs. 3.28 and 0.63 vs. 1.09 kg/d, respectively; P < 0.01) and neither variable was affected by SO or Cr supplementation. Heat stress increased or tended to increase moisture content of abdominal (7.7 vs. 5.9%; P = 0.07) and inner s.c. (11.4 vs. 9.8%; P < 0.05) adipose depots compared to TNAL controls. Interestingly, TNPF pigs also had increased adipose tissue moisture content and this was most pronounced in the outer s.c. depot (15.0 vs. 12.2%; P < 0.01) compared to TNAL pigs. Heat stress had little or no effect on fatty acid composition of abdominal, inner, and outer s.c. adipose tissue depots. In summary, the negative effects of HS on fat quality do not appear to be fatty acid composition related, but may be explained by increased adipose tissue moisture content.

Abstract
White-nose syndrome (WNS) is a fungal disease responsible for decimating many bat populations in North America. Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd), the psychrophilic fungus responsible for WNS, prospers in the winter habitat of many hibernating bat species. The immune response that Pd elicits in bats is not yet fully understood; antibodies are produced in response to infection by Pd, but they may not be protective and indeed may be harmful. To understand how bats respond to infection during hibernation, we studied the effect of Pd inoculation on the survival and gene expression of captive hibernating Myotis lucifugus with varying pre-hibernation antifungal antibody titres. We investigated gene expression through the transcription of selected cytokine genes (Il6, Il17a, Il1b, Il4 and Ifng) associated with inflammatory, Th1, Th2 and Th17 immune responses in wing tissue and lymph nodes. We found no difference in survival between bats with low and high anti-Pd titres, although anti-Pd antibody production during hibernation differed significantly between infected and uninfected bats. Transcription of Il6 and Il17a was higher in the lymph nodes of infected bats compared with uninfected bats. Increased transcription of these cytokines in the lymph node suggests that a pro-inflammatory immune response to WNS is not restricted to infected tissues and occurs during hibernation. The resulting Th17 response may be protective in euthermic bats, but because it may disrupt torpor, it could be detrimental during hibernation.
