Abstract
Objective: To compare the patient-reported outcomes and short-term clinical outcomes between robotic-assisted and laparoscopic-assisted radical gastrectomy for locally advanced gastric cancer. Methods: This single-center prospective randomized controlled trial was conducted in the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery,Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University from October 2020 to August 2022. Patients with locally advanced gastric cancer who were to undergo radical gastrectomy were selected and randomly divided into two groups according to 1∶1, and received robotic surgery and laparoscopic surgery, respectively. Patient-reported outcomes and short-term clinical outcomes (including postoperative complications, surgical quality and postoperative short-term recovery) were compared between the two groups by t test, Mann-Whitney U test, repeated ANOVA, generalized estimating equation, χ2 test and Fisher's exact test. Results: A total of 237 patients were enrolled for modified intention-to-treat analysis (120 patients in the robotic group, 117 patients in the laparoscopic group). There were 180 males and 59 females, aged (63.0±10.2) years (range: 30 to 85 years). The incidence of postoperative complications was similar between the robotic group and laparoscopic group (16.7% (20/120) vs. 15.4% (18/117), χ2=0.072, P=0.788). The robotic group had higher patient-reported outcomes scores in general health status, emotional, and social domains compared to the laparoscopic group, differences in time effect, intervention effect, and interaction effect were statistically significant (general health status: χ2 value were 275.68, 3.91, 6.38, P value were <0.01, 0.048, 0.041; emotional: χ2 value were 77.79, 6.04, 6.15, P value were <0.01, 0.014, 0.046; social: χ2 value were 148.00, 7.57, 5.98, P value were <0.01, 0.006, 0.048). However, the financial burden of the robotic group was higher, the differences in time effect, intervention effect and interaction effect were statistically significant (χ2 value were 156.24, 4.08, 36.56, P value were<0.01, 0.043,<0.01). Conclusion: Compared to the laparoscopic group, the robotic group could more effectively relieve postoperative negative emotions and improve recovery of social function in patients.

Assessing hydrological connectivity for natural-artificial catchment with a new framework integrating graph theory and network analysis. JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT 2023; 346:119055. [PMID: 37741196 DOI: 10.1016/j.jenvman.2023.119055] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 03/22/2023] [Revised: 09/09/2023] [Accepted: 09/18/2023] [Indexed: 09/25/2023]
Abstract
Anthropogenic activities alter the underlying surface conditions and arrangements of landscape features in a drainage basin, interfering with the pollutant (e.g., dissolved nitrogen, phosphorus) transport network configuration and altering the hydrological response. Assessing the impact of anthropogenic activities on hydrological connectivity for natural-artificial catchment is critical to understand the hydrological-driven ecosystem processes, services and biodiversity. However, quantifying this impact at catchment scale remains challenging. In this study, a new framework was proposed to quantify the impact of anthropogenic activities on hydrological connectivity combined with graph theory and network analysis. This framework was exemplified in a natural-artificial catchment of the Yangtze River basin of China. Based on remote sensing and field-investigated data, three transport networks were constructed, including natural transport network (N1), ditch-road transport network (N2), and terrace-dominated transport network (N3), which reflected the different human intervention. The results showed that human intervention improved the connectivity of the nodes and enhanced the complexity of the catchment transport network structure. Anthropogenic activities significantly decreased the hydrological structural connectivity of the catchment. In particular, compared with the N1 network, the critical nodes for hydrological connectivity which were judged by connectivity indexes were reduced by 92.94% and 95.29% in the N2 and N3 network, respectively. Furthermore, the ditch-road construction had a greater impact than terraces in decreasing hydrological structural connectivity at catchment scale. This framework has proven effective in quantifying the hydrological connectivity analysis under different human intervention at the catchment scale and facilitates the improvement of catchment management strategies.

Abstract
Guidelines for heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems have been developed for different settings. However, there is a lack of up-to-date evidence providing concrete recommendations for the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems of an isolation room, which is essential to appropriately guide infection control policies. To highlight the guidelines for heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems in isolation rooms to inform relevant stakeholders and policymakers. A systematic search was performed based on Joanna Briggs Methodology using five databases (CINAHL, Embase, Joanna Briggs Institute, Medline, and Web of Science) and websites. Eight articles published by government departments were included in this review. Most studies recommended controlled airflow without recirculation, 12 air changes per hour, high-efficiency particulate air filtrate to exhaust contaminated air from the airborne isolation room, humidity ≤60%, and temperature in the range of 18-30 °C. This review provides further evidence that there is a need for interdisciplinary collaborative research to quantify the optimum range for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system parameters, considering door types, anterooms, and bed management, to effectively reduce the transmission of infection in isolation rooms.

[Safety and efficacy analysis of endovascular thrombectomy in patients with large vascular occlusion with low Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography Score]. ZHONGHUA NEI KE ZA ZHI 2023; 62:1178-1186. [PMID: 37766436 DOI: 10.3760/cma.j.cn112138-20221219-00942] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Grants] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 09/29/2023]
Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) in acute anterior circulation large vessel occlusive stroke (ALVOS) and explore the related influencing factors for prognoses in patients with low Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography Score (ASPECT). Methods: Patients with acute ALVOS who underwent EVT in Yijishan Hospital of Wannan Medical College from January 2019 to June 2022 were sequentially enrolled. (1) Patients were divided into a low ASPECT group (0-5) and a non-low ASPECT group (6-10), and the differences between the two groups were compared with respect to incidence of perioperative complications and good prognosis rate [modified Rankin scale (mRS) score≤2] 90 days after onset. (2) According to the prognoses 90 days after onset, the low ASPECT group was divided into the good prognosis (mRS score≤2) and poor prognosis (mRS score>2) subgroup. Univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to investigate the independent risk factors for prognoses of the low ASPECT patients after EVT. Results: A total of 582 patients [age 26-94(69±11) years, 345 male patients (59.3%)] were enrolled for analysis. The baseline ASPECT score was 8 (7, 10), and the baseline NIHSS score was 14 (11, 18). Among them, 102 (17.5%) patients were in the low ASPECT score group and 480 (82.5%) patients were in the non-low ASPECT score group. In the total cohort, patients in the low ASPECT score group had a higher incidence of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage, lower 90-day good prognosis rate, and higher 90-day mortality rate. Further, propensity score matching statistical analysis showed that patients in the low ASPECT score group had a significantly higher incidence of malignant brain edema after EVT treatment (40.0% vs. 17.6%, χ2=9.13, P=0.003), and a significantly lower 90-day good prognosis rate (24.7% vs. 41.6%, χ2=4.96, P=0.026), but there was no significant difference in the incidence of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage and 90-day mortality between the two groups (40.3% vs. 26.0%, χ2=3.55, P=0.060). Among 102 patients with low ASPECT score, 22 (21.6%) patients had good prognosis and 80 (78.4%) had poor prognosis. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that history of atrial fibrillation (OR=4.478, 95%CI 1.186-16.913, P=0.027) was an independent risk factor for poor prognosis of EVT in patients with low ASPECT score, while good collateral circulation (grade 2 vs. grade 0: OR=0.206, 95%CI 0.051-0.842, P=0.028) was a protective factor for good prognosis of EVT in patients with low ASPECT score. Conclusions: Although the 90-day good prognosis rate of EVT treatment for patients with low ASPECT score was lower than that of the non-low ASPECT group, 21.6% patients still benefitted from EVT treatment, especially patients with non-atrial fibrillation and good collateral circulation. Future studies involving more patients are needed to validate our observations.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the impact of metabolic risk factors on the epidemiological characteristics of the reactivation of inactive HBsAg carriers (IHC) and provide effective intervention measures to standardize the management of chronic hepatitis B infections. Methods: Based on the chronic hepatitis B infection cohort established in 2010 in Jiangsu province, six follow-up visits from 2012 to 2020 were conducted to analyze the characteristics and influencing factors of the hepatitis B reactivation of IHC and the impact of metabolic risk factors, including obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and hyperglycemia. Results: From 2012 to 2020, 2 527 IHC and 17 730 person-years were observed during a median follow-up period of 7.0 person-years. Ninety-eight cases of hepatitis B reactivation, with a cumulative reaction rate, was 3.9%, and the incidence density was 5.53/1 000 person-years. Multivariate Cox proportional risk regression analysis showed that age and baseline HBV DNA were independent risk factors of HBV reactivation. Compared with the patients ≥60 years, 40-49 age group (aHR=2.16, 95%CI:1.20-3.90) and 20-29 age group (aHR=5.48, 95%CI:2.07-14.48) were significantly associated with hepatitis B reactivation. Compared with the HBV DNA negative patients at baseline, the risk of hepatitis B reactivation was higher in the group with low HBV DNA level 100-1 999 IU/ml (aHR=1.67, 95%CI:1.11-2.52). Stratification analysis results showed that compared with those without metabolic risk factors, in the ≥50 age group, patients with ≥2 metabolic risk factors showed adjusted HR of 2.73 (95%CI:1.08-6.96). Conclusions: The risk of hepatitis B being reactive is the persistent existence of IHC in communities in Jiangsu province, especially young adults, low-level HBV DNA carriers, and IHC with ≥2 metabolic risk factors. Follow-up for these IHC should be strengthened to reduce the risk of disease progression by antiviral treatment at the right time.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the inhibitory effect of combined strategy of poly adenosine diphosphate ribose polymerase (PARP) inhibitor and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) inhibitor on homologous recombination deficiency (HRD)-proficient ovarian cancer cells. Methods: (1) HRD-proficient ovarian cancer cell lines OVCAR3 and CAOV3 were treated with PARP inhibitor olaparib. Screening by RNA sequencing analysis, the expression level of IL-1β was validated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and western blot. (2) The dose-response curves of IL-1β inhibitor diacerein were evaluated by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assays in OVCAR3 and CAOV3 cells. CCK-8 assays were further applied to determine the viabilities of OVCAR3 and CAOV3 cells. (3) To evaluate the synergistic effects of olaparib and IL-1β inhibitor in vivo, the transplanted ovarian cancer model was constructed. BALB/c-nude mice (n=16) were injected intraperitoneally with 1×107 OVACR3 cells labelled with luciferase (OVCAR3-Luc). Immunohistochemistry (IHC) assay was performed to determine nuclear antigen associated with cell proliferation (Ki-67) expression. (4) Blood routine tests, kidney and liver function tests were performed to analyze the toxic reaction of different drug treatments. The potential drug-induced injuries of vital organs including heart, liver, spleen, lungs and kidneys of nude mice were determined by hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. Results: (1) The RNA sequencing results showed that the mRNA level of IL-1β was the most significantly increased among the 25 differentially expressed genes in OVCAR3 cells treated with olaparib, compared to the negative control group. Olaparib treatment significantly promoted the secretion and expression of IL-1β protein in both OVACR3 and CAOV3 cells by ELISA [(36.2±3.5) and (49.5±3.5) pg/ml, respectively; all P<0.001] and western bolt (2.87±0.37 and 2.05±0.08, respectively; all P<0.01). (2) The half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of IL-1β inhibitor was determined as follows: 75 μmol/L for OVACR3 cells and 100 μmol/L for CAOV3 cells. The treatments were divided into four groups including control group, olaparib monotherapy group, IL-1β inhibitor monotherapy group and the combination therapy group. The cell viabilities of each group in OVCAR3 and CAOV3 were determined by CCK-8 assay. The data in each group were showed as follows for OVCAR3 and CAOV3 cells: (100.0±0.4)% and (100.0±3.5)% in control group; (63.1±6.2)% and (63.3±3.8)% in olaparib monotherapy group; (61.6±4.7)% and (63.8±3.5)% in IL-1β inhibitor monotherapy group; and (32.9±5.2)% and (30.0±1.3)% in the combination therapy group. The viability assay showed that the combined strategy exhibited a significant inhibition effect on OVACR3 and CAOV3 cells, compared to the monotherapy group and the control group (all P<0.01). (3) All mice with transplanted tumors of HRD-proficient ovarian cancer cells were randomly divided into four groups, and treated with four different treatments as mentioned above, respectively. After 4 weeks (on day 29), the vivo fluorescence imaging were determined. The results showed that the amount of fluorescence of transplanted tumors was mostly decreased in the combination therapy group [(0.5±0.4)×1010 p/s], compared to the control group [(4.2±1.0)×1010 p/s] or the groups treated with any single drug [(3.1±0.9)×1010, (2.2±0.9)×1010 p/s; all P<0.05]. Mice were then sacrificed under anesthesia, and all transplanted tumors detached and weighed for further investigation. The weight of transplanted tumors was significantly decreased in the combination therapy group [(0.09±0.03) g], compared to that in control group [(0.25±0.05) g] or groups treated with any single drug [(0.17±0.03), (0.19±0.04) g; all P<0.05]. The measurement of the expression of Ki-67 showed that it was significantly decreased in the combination therapy group (0.33±0.10), compared to that in the control group (1.00±0.20) or monotherapy groups (0.76±0.07, 0.77±0.12; all P<0.05). (4) There were no significant differences of body weights, blood routine test, renal and liver function tests among mice with different treatments (all P>0.05). Moreover, no significant injuries were observed in the vital organs among the four groups. Conclusions: The combination of olaparib and IL-1β inhibitor synergistically exhibits significant cytotoxicity in HRD-proficient ovarian cancer cells. Moreover, the blood routine and blood biochemistry results confirmed the biosafety of the combination of olaparib and IL-1β inhibitor.

Abstract
Objective: To compare the short-term and long-term outcomes between robotic-assisted and laparoscopic-assisted radical right hemicolectomy in patients with adenocarcinoma of the right colon. Methods: Retrospective review of a prospectively collected database identified 288 right colon cancer patients who underwent either robotic-assisted (n=57) or laparoscopic-assisted right hemicolectomy (n=231) between October 2014 and October 2020 at Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University. There were 161 males and 127 females, aging (60.3±12.8) years (range: 17 to 86 years). After propensity score matching as 1∶4 between robotic-assisted and laparoscopic-assisted right hemicolectomy, there were 56 cases in robotic group and 176 cases in laparoscipic group. Perioperative outcomes and overall survival were compared between the two groups using t test, Wilcoxon rank sum test, χ2 test, Fisher exact test, Kaplan-Meier method and Log-rank test, respectively. Results: The total operative time was similar between the robotic and laparoscopic group ((206.9±60.7) minutes vs. (219.9±56.3) minutes, t=-1.477, P=0.141). Intraoperative bleeding was less in the robotic group (50 (20) ml vs. 50 (50) ml, Z=-4.591, P<0.01), while the number of lymph nodes retrieved was significantly higher (36.0±10.0 vs. 29.0±10.1, t=4.491, P<0.01). Patients in robotic group experienced significantly shorter hospital stay, shorter time to first flatus, and defecation (t: -2.888, -2.946, -2.328, all P<0.05). Moreover, the overall peri-operative complication rate was similar between robotic and laparoscopic group (17.9% vs. 22.7%, χ²=0.596,P=0.465). The 3-year overall survival were 92.9% and 87.9% respectively and the 3-year disease-free survival rates were 83.1% and 82.6% with no statistical significance between the robotic and laparoscopic group (P>0.05). Conclusions: Compared to laparoscopic-assisted right hemicolectomy, robot-assisted right hemicolectomy could improve some short-term clinical outcomes. The two procedures are both achieving comparable survival.

PURPOSE Our aim was to perform a meta-analysis evaluating the accuracy of arterial spin-labeling in localizing the epileptic focus in the brain and the changes in the blood perfusion in these regions. DATA SOURCES Our sources were the PubMed and EMBASE data bases. STUDY SELECTION English language studies that assessed the diagnostic accuracy of arterial spin-labeling for detecting the epileptogenic zone up to July 2019 were included. DATA ANALYSIS The symptomatogenic foci of seizures in the brain were determined and used as the references. The relevant studies were evaluated using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 tool. The outcomes were evaluated using the pooled sensitivity, pooled specificity, pooled accuracy, diagnostic odds ratio, area under the summary receiver operating characteristic curve, and likelihood ratio. DATA SYNTHESIS Six studies that included 174 patients qualified for this meta-analysis. The pooled sensitivity, pooled specificity, and area under the summary receiver operating characteristic curve were 0.74 (95% CI, 0.65-0.82), 0.35 (95% CI, 0.03-0.90), and 0.73 (95% CI, 0.69-0.76), respectively. The accuracy of arterial spin-labeling for localizing the epileptic focus was 0.88 (accuracy in arterial spin-labeling/all perfusion changes in arterial spin-labeling) in cases of a positive arterial spin-labeling result. The epileptogenic zone exhibited hyperperfusion or hypoperfusion. LIMITATIONS Only a few studies were enrolled due to the strict inclusion criteria. CONCLUSIONS Arterial spin-labeling can be used for assessing, monitoring, and reviewing, postoperatively, patients with epilepsy. Blood perfusion changes in the brain may be closely related to the seizure time and pattern.

Abstract
Objective: To explore The feasibility of digital guidance drill templates assisted expansive open-door laminoplasty. Methods: Ten specimens of normal adult cervical spine (C3-7) were selected, including six males and four females. The specimens aged 42-67 years, with an average age of (43.6±4.2) years. After CT scanning, the date was imported into Mimics software in DICOM format. 3D models were reconstructed and the position and depth of troughs on the open side and hinge side were selected for expansive open-door laminoplasty. Drill templates were designed and exported in STL, manufactured by 3D printing finally. Then drill templates were attached to the posterior part of cervical lamina and spinous process. Under guidance of templates, troughs of both sides were conducted by using a high-speed drill. Then the lamina is elevated and instrumentations were implanted. Postoperative CT scanning was conducted to record the fracture of trough on the hinge side. 3D reconstruction was performed again to compare the position and depth between theory and actual trough on both sides by paired t test. Results: A total of 50 drill templates were designed and manufactured. There was no occurrence of hinge fracture after operation. In C3-7, the distance range between the theory position of troughs on the open side and the midline was 11.8-14.4 mm, while in actual it was 11.4-14.0 mm. The distance range between the theory position of troughs on the hinge side and the midline was 11.6-14.3 mm; in actual, it was 10.9-14.0 mm. The theory depth range of trough on the hinge side was 3.0-3.8 mm, while the actual depth was 3.1-3.8 mm. According to the statistical analysis, the difference in the position of trough on the open side, the position of trough on the hinge side and the depth of trough on the hinge side between theory and actual were not statistically significant (all P>0.05). Conclusion: Digital guided template assisted open-door laminoplasty is a feasible technique, which can improve the accuracy and safety of the position and depth of the trough, and has clinical application value.

Effect of local watershed landscapes on the nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in the waterbodies of reservoir bays. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2020; 716:137132. [PMID: 32045768 DOI: 10.1016/j.scitotenv.2020.137132] [Citation(s) in RCA: 19] [Impact Index Per Article: 4.8] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/14/2019] [Revised: 02/03/2020] [Accepted: 02/03/2020] [Indexed: 06/10/2023]
Abstract
Reservoir bays, which are affected by the reservoir and watershed characteristics, are the initial and most sensitive areas in the evolution process of reservoir water quality. However, the relationship between the watershed characteristics and nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in reservoir bays is poorly understood. We selected 66 bays from the Danjiangkou Reservoir and sampled twice per year (storage and discharge periods) from 2015 to 2018 to monitor the total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) concentration in the waterbodies of the reservoir bays. Four types of watershed characteristic indices (topographic variables, soil variables, land-use composition, and landscape patterns) around these bays were obtained. We quantified the relationship between the TN and TP concentrations and watershed characteristics in the waterbodies of the reservoir bays using partial least squares regression (PLSR). The results showed that the mean concentrations of TN and TP in the storage period (TN:1.69 mg·L-1, TP:0.088 mg·L-1) were higher than those in the discharge period (TN:1.22 mg·L-1, TP:0.063 mg·L-1). The optimal PLSR models explained 67.9% and 82.5% of the TN concentration variability, and 65.4% and 67.2% of the TP concentration variability during the storage and discharge period, respectively. Based on the variable importance in the projection (VIP) values, soil erodibility had significant effects on the TN and TP concentrations. The key factors affecting the TN concentration were the slope gradient, basin relief, topographic wetness index, forest and agricultural land use, whereas the factors controlling the TP concentration were the landscape shape index, edge density, Shannon's diversity index and grass land use, although the TP concentration was also controlled by the patch density and contagion during the storage period, and by mean patch size and largest patch index during the discharge period. This study provides critical insights into sustainable landscape planning and effective reservoir water quality management.

Abstract
The detection of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from peripheral blood is considered as great significance for the diagnosis and prognosis of cancer patients. Raman spectroscopy is a highly sensitive optical detection technique that can provide fingerprint molecular identification information. In this paper, the silver film substrate surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) was used to research several tumor cells, immortalized cells, clinical cancer cells isolated from cancer patient's tissue and blood cells. The results display that there is great difference for the nucleic acid characteristic peaks of those cells. The red blood cells have almost none nucleic acid characteristic peak and the SERS signals of white blood cells are only a slight increase. Except for immortalized cells and few tumor cells, the nucleic acid characteristic peaks of some tumor cells have huge enhancement. Nucleic acid characteristic peaks of clinical cancer cells also have greater enhancement. The discriminant model established by the intensity ratio of the nucleic acid characteristic peak 730 cm-1 to the substrate background peak 900 cm-1 shows that some tumor cells and clinical sample cells can be separated from white blood cells, but tumor cells with relatively low-DNA index cannot be differentiated from white blood cells. This study demonstrates that thin-film SERS technology can distinguish between blood cells and some types of tumor cells. This study opens up a new possible method for the detection of CTCs with label-free SERS spectra.

Abstract
Objective: To understand characteristics and influencing factors of reversion of HBeAg in chronic hepatitis B patients with HBeAg sero-conversion, and provide epidemiological evidence for the regular management of chronic hepatitis B patients. Methods: From 2012 to 2014, a cohort study was conducted among the chronic hepatitis B patients with sero-conversion of HBeAg in Jiangsu province. Association between participants' demographics, ALT, HBV DNA and incidence of HBeAg reversion was analyzed by Cox regression model. HBV DNA changing trend between patients with HBeAg reversion and patients with persistent HBeAg sero-conversion was compared by repeated measure data variance analysis. Results: In 2012, there were 5 068 HBeAg seroconverted chronic hepatitis B patients aged (51.9 ± 12.8) years enrolled. By 2014, HBeAg had reversed in 121 cases with the rate of 1.3/100 person-years. The probability of HBeAg reversion decreased with the age of the patients. By Cox regression analysis, HBV DNA level was an important influencing factor for the progress of HBeAg reversion. The patients with HBV DNA≥200 000 IU/ml had a higher HBeAg reversion rate DNA (3.8/100 person-years) than those with HBV DNA <2 000 IU/ml (1.1 person-years) (HR=3.44, 95% CI: 1.91-6.20, P=0.000). Compared with the persistent HBeAg sero-conversion group, HBV DNA and ALT showed a more dramatic increase in the HBeAg reversion group (P=0.000). Conclusions: There was a certain HBeAg reversion rate in chronic hepatitis B patients with HBeAg sero-conversion. Younger chronic CHB patients with HBeAg sero-conversion and those with higher HBV DNA lever had higher HBeAg reversion rate. Following up and management of chronic CHB patients with HBeAg sero-conversion is important and helpful for the control of hepatitis B.

Abstract
Objective: To understand the epidemiological characteristics and influencing factors related to HBeAg sero-clearance in chronic hepatitis B patients so as to provide evidence for regular management on chronic HBV patients. Methods: From 2012 to 2014, a cohort study was conducted among HBeAg positive chronic HBV patients in Jiangsu province. Association between the characteristics and incidence of HBeAg sero-clearance was analyzed by Cox regression method. The changing trend on HBV DNA between patients with HBeAg sero-clearance and those with persistent HBeAg positive status was compared by repeated measure data variance analysis method. Results: In 2012, there were 721 HBeAg positive hepatitis B patients aged (45.2 ± 14.2) years enrolled in this study. By 2014, the follow-up observation period was 1 058 person-years, and 393 cases had lost their HBeAg status, with the rate as 37.2/100 person-years. The HBeAg sero-clearance rate was 32.4/100 person-years in hepatitis B patients who received antiviral treatment. The probability of HBeAg clearance in HBeAg positive hepatitis B patients aged ≥60 year (62.0/100 person-years) was higher than those of aged <20 year (7.0/100 person-years). The rate of HBeAg sero-clearance in HBeAg positive patients with HBV DNA <20 000 IU/ml (75.8/100 person-years) was higher than those whose HBV DNA were ≥200 000 IU/ml (16.1/100 person-years). By Cox regression analysis, the HBV DNA level was an important influencing factor on the progress of HBeAg sero-clearance. Patients with HBV DNA levle as ≥200 000 IU/ml, had a lower HBeAg clearance rate (HR=0.18, 95%CI: 0.13-0.23, P<0.001). Compared to the persistent HBeAg positive group, HBV DNA showed a more dramatic fall in the HBeAg-lost group (P<0.001). Conclusion: The rate of HBeAg sero-clearance among HBeAg positive hepatitis B patients was correlated with age and HBV DNA status of the patients that called for comprehensive management and intervention programs to develop for the HBeAg positive hepatitis B patients with different characteristics.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the clinical features and viral load of persons infected with HCV and the risk factors for severe outcomes. Methods: Medical testing and questionnaire survey were conducted on 465 cases who were infected with HCV, 20-30 years back. HCV RNA, alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), albumin, globulin and bilirubin were tested for these subjects. Factors as demography, tobacco and alcohol consumption, SNP of rs7453920 and rs2856718 on HLA-DQ gene of subjects with HCV RNA, were analyzed by multiple logistic regression method to explore the risk factors for severe outcomes among the patients. Result: Totally, 465 subjects had symptoms as hypodynamic (15.70%, 73/465), digestive system (17.63%, 82/465), and arthrodynia (10.32%, 48/465). HCV RNA was positive in 68.60% (319/465) of the subjects with median viral load as 76.01×10(4) copies/ml (min-max: 592 copies/ml -1.08×10(10) copies/ml). Totally, 11.83% (55/465) of the cases appeared having liver inflammation by routine ultrasound exams. ALT and AST was seen higher than 80 (IU/L) in 12.70% (59/465) and 11.18% (52/465) of the subjects, separately. Factors as being male (OR =2.298, 95%CI: 1.247-4.238), GA genotype compared with AA type in rs2856718 (OR=1.716, 95%CI: 1.070-2.752), alcohol intake ≥7 times per-week (OR=2.966, 95% CI: 0.979-8.988) etc., were independently related to HCV RNA sustained positivity. Factors as: being male (OR=1.694, 95%CI: 0.975-2.942), in 50-59 years age group (OR=2.414, 95%CI: 1.156-5.042), having other liver diseases (OR=2.592, 95% CI: 1.105-6.079) and carrying positive HCV RNA (OR=3.479, 95% CI: 1.648-7.343) etc. were independent risk factors for abnormal liver function. Conclusion: High rates of carrying sustained positive HCV RNA and abnormal liver function appeared in subjects who got the HCV infection 20-30 years ago. Factors as being male, in old age, being frequent alcohol taker, GA genotype in rs2856718 and with other liver diseases etc. were related to higher risk for developing severe outcomes.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the association of expression of leptin and leptin receptor (LR) with bone metastasis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma. Methods: One hundred and sixteen pulmonary adenocarcinoma patients who had complete clinicopathological data and definite pathological diagnosis in our hospital from January 2008 to January 2010 were selected. They were divided into the metastasis (n= 58) and non-metastasis (control, n=58) groups. The expressions of leptin and LR were identified by immunohistochemistry. The differences between expressions of leptin and LR in primary pulmonary adenocarcinoma tissues and metastasis, and between the groups with and without bone metastasis were analyzed. We also analyzed the correlation of leptin and LR expressed in primary adenocarcinoma and bone metastatic tissues, and the relationship between their expression levels and bone metastasis free survival (BMFS). Results: Among 58 patients of the metastasis group, the cases of high, moderate and low expressions of leptin were 36, 15 and 7, respectively, and the cases of high, moderate and low expressions of LR were 32, 17 and 9, respectively. Among the 58 patients of control group, the cases of high, moderate and low expressions of leptin were 19, 24 and 15, respectively, and those of LR were 17, 16 and 25, respectively. The expressions of leptin and LR in primary pulmonary adenocarcinoma tissues of metastasis group were significantly different from those of the control group (P=0.006, P=0.002, respectively). The expressions of leptin and LR in primary pulmonary adenocarcinoma tissues of the bone metastasis group were also significantly different from those of the non-bone metastasis group (P=0.029, P=0.032, respectively). The high/moderate expression rates of leptin and LR in the bone-metastatic tissues reached 91.4% (32/35) and 88.6% (31/35), respectively. The results showed that the expressions of leptin and LR in primary pulmonary adenocarcinoma tissues were positively related with their expressions in bone metastatic tissue (r = 0.612). The median bone metastasis free survival (BMFS) of the bone metastasis groups with high, moderate and low expressions of leptin were 14, 21 and 47 months, respectively, and the median BMFS of high, moderate and low expressions of LR in the bone metastasis group were 13, 19 and 27 months, respectively. The expressions of leptin and LR in pulmonary adenocarcinoma were significantly associated with BMFS (P<0.001, P=0.006, respectively). Conclusions: The expressions of leptin and LR are significantly up-regulated in primary pulmonary adenocarcinoma tissues and bone metastatic tissues, and are negatively correlated with BMFS. These two molecules may be used as effective predictors of bone metastasis in pulmonary adenocarcinoma.

Abstract
In this work, we develop the Green's function method for the solution of the peridynamic non-local diffusion model in which the spatial gradient of the generalized potential in the classical theory is replaced by an integral of a generalized response function in a horizon. We first show that the general solutions of the peridynamic non-local diffusion model can be expressed as functionals of the corresponding Green's functions for point sources, along with volume constraints for non-local diffusion. Then, we obtain the Green's functions by the Fourier transform method for unsteady and steady diffusions in infinite domains. We also demonstrate that the peridynamic non-local solutions converge to the classical differential solutions when the non-local length approaches zero. Finally, the peridynamic analytical solutions are applied to an infinite plate heated by a Gauss source, and the predicted variations of temperature are compared with the classical local solutions. The peridynamic non-local diffusion model predicts a lower rate of variation of the field quantities than that of the classical theory, which is consistent with experimental observations. The developed method is applicable to general diffusion-type problems.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to define the genotypes of UGT1A1 and ERCC1 and to examine their relationship with the efficacy and toxicity of a combination therapy of irinotecan and cisplatin in patients with advanced ovarian cancer. The allelic frequencies of the UGT1A1 and ERCC1 variants in a group of 89 patients with advanced ovarian cancer were determined. The relationship between the adverse events of irinotecan-based chemotherapy and the efficacy of cisplatin in patients with advanced ovarian cancer were analyzed. For patients who carried the UGT1A1*28 wild-type (WW) or the UGT1A1*28 heterozygous and homozygous mutant (WM+MM) genotypes, the incidences of grade 2 or 3 tardive diarrhea were 52.2 and 72.7% respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (P = 0.031, OR = 2.1, 95%CI = 1.6-9.2). For grade 3 or 4 tardive diarrhea, the incidence rates were 7.5 and 36.4% respectively; this difference was also statistically significant (P = 0.000, OR = 4.9, 95%CI = 3.3-15.8). The response rates of ERCC1 WW and ERCC1 WM+MM carriers were 30.3 and 20.2% respectively; this difference was significant (P = 0.032, OR = 3.2, 95%CI = 1.4-9.1). Together, the results from this study suggest that UGT1A1 is a target gene for tardive diarrhea, and that the UGT1A1*28 gene mutation might increase the risk of diarrhea with irinotecan-based chemotherapy. Furthermore, the results suggest that ERCC1 WW carriers might obtain a better rate of clinical response from a combined irinotecan and cisplatin regimen than ERCC1 WM+MM carriers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of alternating etoposide-cisplatin and vinorelbine-cisplatin (EP-NP) compared with an etoposide-cisplatin (EP) regimen for advanced combined small cell carcinomas. MATERIALS AND METHODS Histologically confirmed combined small cell carcinoma patients who met the inclusion criteria were randomly assigned (1:1) into either the EP-NP setting (group A) or the EP setting (group B). The primary endpoint was progression-free survival in patients who received at least one dose of treatment. RESULTS Eighty-two patients entered into this trial, 42 in group A and 40 in group B. The objective response rates in group A and group B were 42.9% and 32.5%, respectively (p=0.334). Survival analysis showed that median progression-free survival was 6.1 months in group A, which was significantly longer than the 4.1 months in group B (p=0.041). However, as to overall survival, no significant difference was found between the two groups (11.0 vs 10.1 months in groups A and B, respectively, p=0.545). No unexpected side effects were observed in either group. CONCLUSIONS The EP-NP regimen for combined small cell carcinomas prolonged progression- free survival compared with the EP regimen. Further clinical investigations are warranted.

Different behaviors in the transformation of PATP adsorbed on Ag or Au nanoparticles investigated by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy - a study of the effects from laser energy and annealing. Abstract
In order to explore the key role of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and active (3)O2 for the chemical transformation to 4,4-dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB) from p-aminothiophenol (PATP) adsorbed on Ag or Au NPs, we systematically investigated the laser wavelength and temperature dependent surface-enhanced Raman spectra of PATP capped Ag and Au NPs. DMAB can be easily observed at the 514.5nm laser for Ag NPs but at the 632.8nm laser for Au NPs, indicating that a suitable energy level is necessary for the formation of DMAB. The tendency is consistent with the wavelength dependent SPR properties of Ag or Au NPs accordingly. With the energy provided by annealing, the transformation of PATP to DMAB is much easier on Ag NPs at a lower temperature, and more DMAB can be observed at the same temperature, compared to the case of Au NPs under the same condition. It is mainly due to the active (3)O2 on Ag surfaces could be more easily formed than that on Au surfaces.

Abstract
The risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is strongly associated with hepatitis B virus infection. Hepatic angiomyolipoma (AML), a rare benign tumor, is composed of a heterogeneous mixture of adipose cells, smooth muscle cells and blood vessels. Here, we report the case of a 44-year-old man who developed HCC with a concomitant hepatic AML and a cavernous hemangioma, in the absence of cirrhosis. To our knowledge, based on an extensive literature search using the www.pubmed.gov website, this is the first report of an HCC case with both concomitant AML and cavernous hemangioma at the same position in the liver. The presence of the hepatitis B surface antigen was detected, but the liver function was normal. Clinical and pathological data were collected before and during the treatment. Hepatic AML was diagnosed based on the typical histological characteristics and immunohistochemical staining, which revealed, a positive staining with a melanocytic cell-specific monoclonal antibody. There was no evidence of tuberous sclerosis complex in this patient. Although the HCC was poor- to moderately-differentiated, the characteristics of the AML and the cavernous hemangioma in this patient did not match any criteria for malignancy. Hepatectomy followed by transarterial chemoembolization treatment were effective therapeutic methods for the adjacent lesions in this patient. This case is an interesting coincidence.

Abstract
The laser induced transformation of p-aminothiophenol (PATP) to p,p'-dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB) has attracted intensive interest recently, in which localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) assisted photocatalysis has been demonstrated to play an important role. In this paper, we systematically investigate the factors that influence the reaction for further understanding the mechanism using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. The laser-induced formation of DMAB was found to depend on the surface coverage of PATP, the aggregation state of NPs, and the laser power. The disappearance of DMAB Raman signal at very low concentration of Ag NPs reveals that DMAB may only be formed between the neighboring NPs that can provide a suitable distance for the interaction between adsorbed PATP molecules.

MMP-7 is upregulated by COX-2 and promotes proliferation and invasion of lung adenocarcinoma cells. Eur J Histochem 2014; 58:2262. Abstract
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) have been implicated in a variety of pathophysiological conditions, of which MMP-7 is expressed by tumor cells of epithelial and mesenchymal origin. However, the function of MMP-7 in human lung adenocarcinoma (LAC) is unclear. In the present study the expression of MMP-7 in LAC was examined by immunohistochemical assay using a tissue microarray procedure. A loss-of-function experiment was performed to explore the effects and molecular mechanisms of lentiviral vector-mediated MMP-7 siRNA (siMMP-7) on cell proliferation and invasive potential in LAC A549 cells, measured by MTT and Transwell assays, respectively. It was found that, the expression of MMP-7 protein in LAC was significantly increased compared with that in adjacent non-cancerous tissues (ANCT) (76.0% vs 44.0%, P<0.001), and positively correlated with lymph node metastases of the tumor (P=0.014). Furthermore, targeted inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) by siRNA downregulated the expression of MMP-7 and inhibited invasion of LAC cells, and knockdown of MMP-7 suppressed tumor proliferation and invasion in LAC cells. Taken together, our findings indicate that increased expression of MMP-7 is associated with lymph node metastasis and upregulated by COX-2, and promotes the tumorigenesis of LAC, suggesting that MMP-7 may be a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of cancer.

Electrochemical behavior of N-methyl-N'-carboxydecyl-4,4'-bipyridinium probed by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. SPECTROCHIMICA ACTA. Abstract
Interfacial structure determines the activity and selectivity of a sensor and plays important roles in interfacial electrochemistry, electroanalysis, biosensing, etc. In situ electrochemical Raman spectroscopy appears to be a powerful tool to probe the electrochemical interface and surface process by providing the molecular fingerprint information. Herein, the electrochemical behaviors of N-methyl-N'-carboxydecyl-4,4'-bipyridinium (derivatives of methyl viologens, MV(2+)) with different alkyl chain lengths (n=2 and 10) on roughened Au electrodes were systematically investigated by the electrochemical surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Three systems with different interfacial structures were constructed. One is to anchor the MV(2+) molecules via esterification with the 2-mercaptoethanol molecule pre-assembled on the Au surface. The second system is similar to the first one but without esterification. The third system is the direct adsorption of MV(2+) molecules on the bare roughened Au surfaces. The three systems gave different spectral response upon the change of the electrode potential. A drastically increased relative Raman intensity of 19a/8a modes of the MV(2+) molecules was observed at negative potentials. The phenomenon is attributed to the formation of the reduced form of MV(2+) molecules, which produces resonant Raman effect to enhanced the signal of 19a mode. The third system showed the highest electrochemical reduction activity towards the reduction of MV(2+) molecules, followed by the first and second systems. The result indicates that the interfacial structure can sensitively influence electrochemical activity of the electrode.

Abstract
AIM Cyclin D1 is an important cell cycle regulatory proteins, which is a functional target of Slug in the regulation of cell growth of prostate cancer cells. But the pathway of these two factors interacting with each other is unclear. METHODS The infectde PCa Cells were treated with proteasome inhibitor MG-132. Expression level of Slug, HA-cyclin D1 and other protein was examined by Western blot. RESULTS Increasing doses of adenovirus expressing human Slug were added to DU-145 cells separately, but there were no significantly difference on expressions of Slug and cyclin D1. We found that the protein expressions of HA-Cyclin D1 (wide-type) were all reduced through high expression of Slug, which is dose-dependent. However, there is no change for HA-Cyclin D1 (mutant) expression in PC-3 with pMIGW-Cyclin D1-HA T286A. The protein expression of HA-Cyclin D1 were all reduced three days after infection by adding adenovirus expressing human Slug to PC-3 carrying pMIGW-Cyclin D1-HA vector compared to negative control, which is dose-dependent. However, there is no change for HA-Cyclin D1 expression in PC-3 with pMIGW-Cyclin D1-HA treated by MG-132. CONCLUSION We found that forced expression of Slug inhibited proliferation of prostate cancer cells through downregulation of cyclin D1 expression. And Slug regulates cyclin D1 expression by ubiquitin-proteasome pathway in PCa cells.

Abstract
A combination of oncolytic and chemotherapeutic agents has been used to kill cancer cells. However, the effect of oncolytic adenoviruses on the cell cycle remains to be determined. Cytotoxicity assays were performed to determine cell death in cells treated with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) alone or in combination with the oncolytic adenovirus KH901. Dynamic changes in the cell cycle, cell proliferation, and apoptosis-related proteins including p-AKT, Bcl-2, Bax, and caspase 3 were investigated after treatment with 5-FU with or without KH901. A higher proportion of S-phase cells were observed after treatment with KH901 and 5-FU than with 5-FU alone. p-AKT, Bcl-2, and Bax expression was increased upon treatment with KH901, whereas the expression of caspase-3 was not induced upon treatment with KH901 with or without 5-FU. KH901 exhibited significant potential as an oncolytic adenovirus and increased cell death in combination with 5-FU in LoVo cells, as compared to 5-FU alone. In conclusion, KH901 stimulates LoVo cells to enter the S-phase by activation of p-AKT, which could partly explain its synergistic effect with 5-FU on LoVo cell cytotoxicity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the pathologic features and immunophenotype of 3 cases of melanotic epithelioid clear cell tumor of kidney. METHODS More than 2000 cases of renal tumors were retrospectively reviewed. Three cases of melanotic epithelioid clear cell tumor were identified. Immunohistochemical study was carried out using the paraffin-embedded tissue samples. Electron microscopy was also performed in 1 case. RESULTS Amongst the 3 cases studied, the male-to-female ratio is 1:2. Histologically, 2 cases showed a clear cell carcinoma-like pattern. Papillary structures covered by clear cells and eosinophilic cells were observed in 1 case. Immunohistochemical study showed that the tumor cells in all cases expressed HMB 45. Two of them were also positive for Melan A. The staining for epithelial markers and S-100 protein was negative. Melanosomes were not identified by ultrastructural examination. CONCLUSIONS Melanotic epithelioid clear cell tumor is a rarely seen neoplasm of kidney. There are some histologic overlaps with renal cell carcinoma, epithelioid angiomyolipoma and melanoma. Immunohistochemical study is useful in confirming the diagnosis. The tumor represents a morphologic variant of epithelioid angiomyolipoma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To improve the understanding and diagnosis of pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). METHODS Fifteen cases of LAM of our hospital were presented and 73 cases reported in domestic literature from 1993 to 2008 were reviewed. By means of histological and immunohistochemical(IHC)studies, the clinical and pathological features of LAM were analyzed. RESULTS All the 88 cases were female, with an average age of onset at (37 +/- 9) years. The main clinical manifestations included dyspnea (83/88, 94%), hemoptysis (48/88, 54%), pneumothorax (41/88, 47%), and chylothorax (28/88, 32%). High resolution computerized tomography (HRCT) showed thin-walled air-filled cysts throughout both lungs. Pathological features showed cystic changes in the lung, and abnormal smooth muscle cells (LAM cells) lined the airways, bronchioles, lymphatics and blood vessels leading to airflow obstruction and replacement of the lung parenchyma by cysts. In the autopsy case, extrapulmonary organs (eg, kidney, lymph nodes and soft tissues) were also involved. Abnormal manifestations in abdomen, including renal mass, retroperitoneal mass and retroperitoneal lymphadenopathy, were detected in 23 cases. CONCLUSIONS LAM is a multisystem disease. Chest HRCT had confirmative value for diagnosis of LAM. In practice, chest HRCT, as well as other routine abdominal and pelvic imaging examinations, should be performed for child-bearing-age women with progressive dyspnea, hemoptysis, or spontaneous pneumothorax.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the efficacy, median survival time, time to progression, quality of life and adverse effect of gefitinib (IRESSA) in the treatment for refractory advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS Forty-one patients with stage III b to IV NSCLC who had previously treated with 2-7 cycles of platinum-based chemotherapy were enrolled into the study, 85.4% of the patients had received second line chemotherapy. The regimen was oral intake of gefitinib 250 mg once daily until the disease progression or intolerable toxic reaction occurred. The patients were required to receive tumor assessment before the treatment, one month, two months and every three months after IRESSA administration. RESULTS All 41 patients were evaluable for therapeutic effect. Partial response rate (PR), stable disease (SD) and progression of disease (PD) was 43.9% (18/41), 34.1% (14/41) and 22.0% (9/41), respectively. No complete regression was observed. The overall response rate was 43.9% (18/41) with a rate of 42.1% in the male and 45.5% in the female (P > 0.05). The disease control rate (PR + SD) was 78.0% (32/41). Twenty-two of the 41 patients (53.7%, 22/41) were still alive with MST of 10.1 months when the follow-up ended in Nov. 2006. TP and MST of dead patients was 2.7 and 5.0 months, respectively. The rate of symptom improvement was 78% for all patients with MST of 13.3 months for PR patients. The performance status (Karnofsky) was improved (20 +/- 5) after 28-day treatment. III-IV degree toxicity was not observed. CONCLUSION IRESSA is effective and safe for the advanced NSCLC patients with poor performance status who previously failed in the second or third line chemotherapy.

Abstract
AIMS Thirty-three cases of gastrointestinal schwannomas were analysed to elucidate their peculiar clinicopathological, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural features. METHODS AND RESULTS The patients were 16 men and 17 women, whose ages ranged from 27 to 81 years (median 52.6 years). Tumour size ranged from 10 to 120 mm in diameter. Follow-up in 23 cases from 6 months to 13 years showed no recurrences or metastases. Microscopically, all tumours were composed of spindle cells with focal epithelioid cells in four cases. In all cases except one, there were peripheral cuff-like lymphoid aggregates. Immunohistochemically, tumours were strongly positive for S100 protein and vimentin, the tumours were variably positive for nestin (78.8%, 26/33) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (63.6%, 21/33), three tumours had CD34+ cells, but all were negative for CD117, alpha-smooth muscle actin and desmin. Ultrastructurally, the tumours were composed of elongated spindle shaped cells with prominent parallel membranous structures. CONCLUSIONS Gastrointestinal schwannomas have characteristic histological features, especially the presence of a lymphoid cuff, that are different from their soft tissue and central nervous system counterparts. Gastrointestinal tract schwannomas behave in a benign fashion.

Abstract
AIM: To investigate the significance of c-kit gene mutation in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST).
METHODS: Fifty two cases of GIST and 28 cases of other tumors were examined. DNA samples were extracted from paraffin sections and fresh blocks. Exons 11, 9 and 13 of the c-kit gene were amplified by PCR and sequenced.
RESULTS: Mutations of exon 11 were found in 14 of 25 malignant GISTs (56%), mutations of exon 11 of the c-kit gene were revealed in 2 of 19 borderline GISTs (10.5%), and no mutation was found in benign tumors. The mutation rate showed significant difference (χ2 = 14.39, P < 0.01) between malignant and benign GISTs. Most of mutations consisted of the in-frame deletion or replication from 3 to 48 bp in heterozygous and homozygous fashions, None of the mutations disrupted the downstream reading frame of the gene. Point mutations and frame deletions were most frequently observed at codons 550-560, but duplications were most concentrated at codons 570-585. No mutations of exons 9 and 13 were revealed in GISTs, Neither c-kit gene expression nor gene mutations were found in 3 leiomyomas, 8 leiomyosarcomas, 2 schwannomas, 2 malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors, 2 intra-abdominal fibromatoses, 2 malignant fibrous histiocytomas and 9 adenocarcinomas.
CONCLUSION: C-kit gene mutations occur preferentially in malignant GISTs and might be a clinically useful adjunct marker in the evaluation of GISTs and can help to differentiate GISTs from other mesenchymal tumors of gastrointestinal tract, such as smooth muscle tumors, schwannomas, etc.

Abstract
The optical properties of vanadium oxide nanotube dispersions have been characterized using visible and near infrared absorption spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and nonlinear transmission of optical intensities in the visible and near infrared. Using transmission electron microscopy, optical properties have been correlated to the occurrence of two distinct nanoparticle morphologies: nanotubes and unrolled tubes or platelets. Raman spectroscopy indicates that color changes associated with tub unrolling can be attributed to V2O5 formation. The nanotube and platelet morphologies both show strong optical intensity limiting at 532 and 1064 nm. However, dependencies on repetition rate suggest that slightly different mechanisms dominate at the two wavelengths.

We perform a kind of computer stimulation on the multi-laser-beam interference. Using this method, we picture the interference patterns and describe the influence of the polarization of lights upon the clarity of the pattern. We find out the relations between the polarization states of the lights for the case of the best pattern and provide an optimal solution of the polarization on holographic lithography technology, and experiential formulas. Abstract
Variance components models were used to analyze total IgE levels in families ascertained though the Collaborative Study of the Genetics of Asthma (CSGA) using a genome-wide array of polymorphic markers. While IgE levels are known to be associated with clinical asthma and recognized to be under strong genetic control (here the heritability was estimated at 44-60% in the three racial groups), specific genes influencing this trait are still largely unknown. Multipoint analysis of 323 markers yielded little indication of specific regions containing a trait locus controlling total serum IgE levels (adjusted for age and gender). Although a number of regions showed LOD statistics above 1.5 in Caucasian families (chromosome 4) and in African-American families (chromosomes 2 and 4), none yielded consistent evidence in all three racial groups. Analysis of total IgE adjusted for gender, age and Allergy Index (a quantitative score of skin test sensitivity to 14 common aeroallergens) was conducted on these data. In this analysis, a much stronger signal for a trait locus controlling adjusted log[total IgE] was seen on the telomeric end of chromosome 18, but only in Caucasian families. This region accounted for most of the genetic variation in log[total IgE], and may represent a quantitative trait locus for IgE levels independent of atopic response. Oligogenic analysis accounting simultaneously for the contribution of this locus on chromosome 18 and other chromosomal regions showing some evidence of linkage in these Caucasian families (on chromosomes 2, 4 and 20) failed to yield significant evidence for interaction.

Abstract
For investigating the linkage group to which the semidwarf gene sd-t belongs, the crosses between Aitaiyin 2(ATY2), a variety of sd-t carrier in indica rice, and marker stocks as well as the trisomic lines of IR36 were made. The results indicated that the sd-t gene was linked to the marker genes Prp-b (Purple pericap b), lg(ligueless) and Wh(White hull). The recombination values estimated were 2.85% +/- 0.52% for sd-t to Prp-b, 27.90% +/- 3.81% for sd-t to lg and 38.62% +/- 2.99% for sd-t to Wh, respectively. It was inferred that the sd-t gene was located on chromosome 4 according to the established relationship between chromosomes and linkage groups.
