Customer perceptions of COVID-19 countermeasures on passenger ships during the pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic devastated substantial portions of the tourism industry; the cruise industry particularly suffered from negative publicity as the virus spread rapidly on cruise ships. The pandemic is a disaster that the industry has been forced to adapt to. This study illustrates, through a mixed-methods research design, what factors cruiseferry operators considered in their responses to the pandemic, whether the implemented countermeasures increased their customers' sense of security, and what countermeasures customers would agree to follow before boarding a ship. The study thereby provides insights into which countermeasures are likely to decrease customers' perceived health risks and which they are ready to accept or not on cruises during pandemics.

Managing passenger flows for seaborne transportation during COVID-19 pandemic

The ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has negatively affected the cruise and ferry industry as the passenger numbers and revenues have plummeted. Therefore, we developed a holistic approach for mitigating COVID-19 during seaborne transportation in a cost-efficient way by combining behavioural changes, procedural workflows and technical innovations to reset the industry.

The life situation of parents over the first year after their child's cancer diagnosis

AIM

To evaluate the impact of childhood cancer on the life of the parents.

METHOD

A 1-y follow-up study, with two time points for questionnaires, was completed in 21 out of 26 eligible families, and there were 46 control families matched by mothers' educational status.

RESULTS

Half of the mothers worked outside home during the first year of their child's illness. The perceived amount of lost family income was high during the first few months. The attitudes of the parents were fairly positive as their family life and spouse relations were concerned. Feelings of being under strain or stressed were, by the mothers, described as intolerable in the beginning. However, standardized anxiety assessment failed to show an increase in feelings of anxiety. Own health was rated significantly negative by cancer parents.

CONCLUSIONS

Despite good family relationships, a need for supportive measures exists, especially during the first few months, and in-depth interviews by psychologists or special nurses might be a way of finding out possible anxiety. The perceived feelings of own health may also be an indicator of the level of distress. Parent support groups could also do more to offer opportunities of physical activities for the parents, not merely disease-related information and group discussions.

The siblings of childhood cancer patients need early support: a follow up study over the first year

BACKGROUND AND METHODS

In a 1 year follow up study, we assessed the life situation of 33 siblings of childhood cancer patients and 357 healthy controls. The hypothesis was that siblings have more behavioural and health related problems just after the cancer diagnosis. Validated assessment methods were used.

RESULTS

Siblings below school age tended to have conduct problems, psychosomatic problems, and a mixed group of other behavioural problems, when assessed 3 months after the cancer diagnosis. These symptoms became less evident during follow up. Among the school aged siblings, however, conduct problems, learning problems, psychosomatic problems, impulsive-hyperactive symptoms, and other behavioural symptoms remained unchanged during follow up. In their self assessments, the school aged siblings showed both state and trait anxiety more often than controls at the first assessment, but later these symptoms settled to the same level as the controls. The overall Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) depression scores did not show differences between the study groups.

CONCLUSIONS

The ratings of the parents were in keeping with the self assessment of the school aged siblings only in a few aspects; the emphasis of findings can be changed when proxies are used. The siblings have symptoms and adverse feelings which probably could be relieved by targeted, early information about the illness, and possibly by group discussions or activities, soon after the cancer diagnosis. In order to obtain necessary support for the siblings with educational problems, school personnel need to be informed about the sibling distress.

Synthesis, characterization and potential applications of new materials in the mesoporous range

M41S is the designation of a new type of mesoporous structures. The characteristics of these materials are large surface areas and very narrow pore size distributions, with pore diameters tunable from 15 to 100 A. The M41S family consists of MCM-48, which has a cubic ordered pore structure, MCM-41, which has a hexagonally ordered pore structure and MCM-50, which has an unstable lamellar structure. In this review we cover the synthesis, modification, characterization and potential applications of these materials.

Multivariate Screening Analysis of Water-in-Oil Emulsions in High External Electric Fields as Studied by Means of Dielectric Time Domain Spectroscopy

The effect of crude oil resins with various polar characters on the stability of w/o model emulsions containing asphaltenes is investigated using a mixture design. The resins were extracted using an adsorption-desorption technique. One asphaltene fraction and four different resin fractions from one European crude oil were used. The stabilities are measured using time-domain dielectric spectroscopy in high external electric field. It is found that resins with different polar character have different effects on the emulsion stability. At asphaltene/resin ratios of 1 and 5 : 3 the resins in some cases lead to an emulsion stability higher than that of a similar emulsion stabilized by asphaltenes only, while at low asphaltene/resin ratios ( approximately 1 : 3) the emulsion stability is reduced by the resins. The effect on emulsion stability of combining two different resin fractions depended on the resin types combined as well as the relative amount of resins and asphaltenes. Also, an increase in the stability of some of the emulsions containing resins and asphaltenes for a period of 50-300 min after the emulsification was observed. This time-dependence of emulsion stability is attributed to the mobility of resins at the oil-water interface and the slow buildup of a stabilizing interfacial film consisting of resins and asphaltenes. Properties of Langmuir Surface and Interfacial Films Built up by Asphaltenes and Resins: Influence of Chemical Demulsifiers

The influence of chemical additives on asphaltene films on water surface and at oil/water interface is studied by means of the Langmuir technique. It was found that some demulsifiers of high molecular weight alter the asphaltene film on water surface in the same way as the resin fraction, i.e., increasing the compressibility of the film which results in a reduced film rigidity. The films that build up at the oil/water interface in model oil systems, containing naturally occurring surfactants, are studied during compression. In this system chemical additives of high molecular weight totally prevent formation of a rigid film at the interface. Adding resins to the bulk phase together with asphaltenes hamper the adsorption of the heavy fraction. Copyright 1999 Academic Press.

A Multivariate Analysis on the Sedimentation of Aqueous Silica Suspensions as Studied by Means of Time Domain Dielectric Spectroscopy

The sedimentation of aqueous silica suspensions has been studied by means of time domain dielectric spectroscopy (TDDS) in the frequency range 20 MHz to 2 GHz. The experiments were designed with a 2(5-1) reduced factorial design and analyzed in terms of multivariate regression models. Five different variables were varied to investigate the corresponding suspension sedimentation. The influence of the different variables on the sedimentation of the silica suspensions is discussed. Quantitative FT-Raman analysis of two crystal forms of a pharmaceutical compound

A pharmaceutical active compound H appears in two polymorphs, A and B, that are stable below and above room temperature, respectively. The A- and B-forms were found to have distinct FT-Raman spectra, in particular for a band at 1716 cm-1 (A-form) or 1724 cm-1 (B-form). Mixtures of A- in B-form were prepared, and the relative intensity of the characteristic bands at 1716 and 1724 cm-1 was found to be proportional to the relative amounts of A- and B-form in the mixtures. A calibration was made which was linear in the range from 1.8 to 15.4% (w/w) of A- in B-form. The results were compared with other methods for analysis of polymorphs: FT-IR spectrometry, differential scanning calorimetry, and powder X-ray diffractometry. A novel FT-Raman sample presentation method for inhomogeneous samples is presented.
