High-Throughput Quantitative Analysis of Amino Acids in Freeze-Dried Drops Using Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry

Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) has become a promising analytical tool for molecular profiling in biological applications. However, its ultrahigh vacuum environment and matrix effects hamper the absolute quantitation of solution samples. Herein, we present a rapid high-throughput platform for quantitative ToF-SIMS analysis of amino acids in matrix deposits formed from freeze-dried solution drops through ice sublimation on a parylene film microarray substrate. Droplets of the amino acid solutions, which were mixed with stable isotope-labeled phenylalanine (F*) of high concentration (10 mM), were loaded on wells of the microarray, then frozen and evaporated slowly below the freezing point, forming continuous solid-phase F* matrix deposits. The amino acids (≤500 μM), adequately well dispersed throughout the F* matrix deposits on each well, were quantitatively analyzed by ToF-SIMS in a rapid and high-throughput fashion. The lower limit of quantitation reached below 10 μM.

Overcoming the Interfacial Photocatalytic Degradation of Nonfullerene Acceptor-Based Organic Photovoltaics by Introducing a UV-A-Insensitive Titanium Suboxide Layer

Although recent dramatic advances in power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) have resulted in values over 19%, the poor photostability of organic photovoltaics (OPVs) has been a serious bottleneck to their commercialization. The photocatalytic effect, which is caused by incident ultraviolet-A (UV-A, 320-400 nm) light in the most commonly used zinc oxide (ZnOX) electron transport layer (ETL), significantly deteriorates the photostability of OPVs. In this work, we develop a new and facile method to enhance the photostability of nonfullerene acceptor-based OPVs by introducing UV-A-insensitive titanium suboxide (TiOX) ETL. Through an in-depth analysis of mass information at the interface between the ETL and photoactive layer, we confirm that the UV-A-insensitive TiOX suppresses the photocatalytic effect. The resulting device employing the TiOX ETL shows excellent photostability, obtaining 80% of the initial PCE for up to 200 h under 1 sun illumination, which is 10 times longer than that of the conventional ZnOX system (19 h).

In Situ Doping of the PEDOT Top Electrode for All-Solution-Processed Semitransparent Organic Solar Cells

The development of an ideal solution-processable transparent electrode has been a challenge in the field of all-solution-processed semitransparent organic solar cells (ST-OSCs). We present a novel poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) top electrode for all-solution-processed ST-OSCs through in situ doping of PEDOT:PSS. A strongly polarized long perfluoroalkyl (n = 8) chain-anchored sulfonic acid effectively eliminates insulating PSS and spontaneously crystallizes PEDOT at room temperature, leading to outstanding electrical properties and transparency of PEDOT top electrodes. Doped PEDOT-based ST-OSCs yield a high power conversion efficiency of 10.9% while providing an average visible transmittance of 26.0% in the visible range. Moreover, the strong infrared reflectivity of PEDOT enables ST-OSCs to reject 62.6% of the heat emitted by sunlight (76.7% from infrared radiation), outperforming the thermal insulation capability of commercial tint films. This light management approach using PEDOT enables ST-OSCs to simultaneously provide energy generation and energy savings, making it the first discovery toward sustainable energy in buildings.

Ultrahigh dielectric permittivity in oxide ceramics by hydrogenation

Boosting dielectric permittivity representing electrical polarizability of dielectric materials has been considered a keystone for achieving scientific breakthroughs as well as technological advances in various multifunctional devices. Here, we demonstrate sizable enhancements of low-frequency dielectric responses in oxygen-deficient oxide ceramics through specific treatments under humid environments. Ultrahigh dielectric permittivity (~5.2 × 10⁶ at 1 Hz) is achieved by hydrogenation, when Ni-substituted BaTiO₃ ceramics are exposed to high humidity. Intriguingly, thermal annealing can restore the dielectric on-state (exhibiting huge polarizability in the treated ceramics) to the initial dielectric off-state (displaying low polarizability of ~10³ in the pristine ceramics after sintering). The conversion between these two dielectric states via the ambient environment-mediated treatments and the successive application of external stimuli allows us to realize reversible control of dielectric relaxation characteristics in oxide ceramics. Conceptually, our findings are of practical interest for applications to highly efficient dielectric-based humidity sensors.

Efficient Photon Extraction in Top-Emission Organic Light-Emitting Devices Based on Ampicillin Microstructures

The desire to enhance the efficiency of organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) has driven to the investigation of advanced materials with fascinating properties. In this work, the efficiency of top-emission OLEDs (TEOLEDs) is enhanced by introducing ampicillin microstructures (Amp-MSs) with dual phases (α-/β-phase) that induce photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL). Moreover, Amp-MSs can adjust the charge balance by Fermi level (E_F ) alignment, thereby decreasing the leakage current. The decrease in the wave-guided modes can enhance the light outcoupling through optical scattering. The resulting TEOLED demonstrates a record-high external quantum efficiency (EQE) (maximum: 68.7% and average: 63.4% at spectroradiometer; maximum: 44.8% and average: 42.6% at integrating sphere) with a wider color gamut (118%) owing to the redshift of the spectrum by J-aggregation. Deconvolution of the EL intensities is performed to clarify the contribution of Amp-MSs to the device EQE enhancement (optical scattering by Amp-MSs: 17.0%, PL by radiative energy transfer: 9.1%, and EL by J-aggregated excitons: 4.6%). The proposed TEOLED outperforms the existing frameworks in terms of device efficiency.

Healing Ion-Implanted Semiconductors by Hybrid Microwave Annealing: Activation of Nitrogen-Implanted TiO2

In order to recover the damaged structure of a nitrogen-implanted TiO₂ (N-I-TiO₂) photoanode, hybrid microwave annealing (HMA) is proposed as an alternative postannealing process instead of conventional thermal annealing (CTA). Compared to CTA, HMA provides distinctive advantages: (i) facile transformation of the interstitial N-N states into substitutional N-Ti states, (ii) better preservation of the ion-implanted nitrogen in TiO₂, and (iii) effective alleviation of lattice strain and reconstruction of the broken bonds. As a result, the HMA-activated photoanode improves the photocurrent density by a factor of ∼3.2 from 0.29 to 0.93 mA cm^-2 at 1.23 V_RHE and the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) from ∼2.9% to ∼10.5% at 430 nm relative to those of the as-prepared N-I-TiO₂ photoanode in photoelectrochemical water oxidation, which are much better than those of the CTA-activated photoanode (0.58 mA cm^-2 at 1.23 V_RHE and IPCE of 5.7% at 430 nm), especially in the visible light region (≥420 nm).

Leaching behaviors and mechanisms of vitrified forms for the low-level radioactive solid wastes

Leaching behaviors and mechanisms of commercialized glass wasteforms to sequester low-level solid-wastes were investigated: SG glass for resin waste and DG-2 glass for dry active waste. After ANS 16.1 leaching test, leachabilities of the nuclides, Co, Cs, and Sr, were all lager than 14, which met the requirement of the US-Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Holes of diameters 5-10 μm remained on the surface of the SG and crevices of lengths 10-50 μm were observed on the surface of the DG-2. We analyzed elemental compositions of the SG and the DG-2 with depths. For the SG, Si, Al, Ca, and Mg were accumulated and Na was depleted up to nearly 1.5 μm compared to an internal glass. For the DG-2, concentrations of B, Na, Al, Ca and Sr started to decrease from 2.5 μm even though other minor elements are still remained their concentrations. We suggested leaching mechanisms: alkali elements including H would diffuse through the holes on the SG, while most of the elements including Si and Al would diffuse through the crevices on the DG-2.

Synthesis and application of amine-containing conjugated small molecules for the automatic formation of an electron transporting layer via spontaneous phase separation from the bulk-heterojunction layer

Carbazole-based conjugated small molecule electrolytes (CSEs) containing different numbers of amine groups were synthesized and applied to bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells for the formation of a spontaneous self-assembled electron transporting layer (ETL). The active layer was spin-coated with a mixture solution containing the BHJ materials and a small amount of CSE, and a thin layer of CSE was formed underneath the active layer (CSE/BHJ bi-layer) via spontaneous phase separation, which is confirmed by the depth profile of the time of flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS) spectrum. The amino groups in the CSEs form hydrogen-bonds with the surface of indium tin oxide (ITO), which acts as an ETL in BHJ solar cells. Moreover, the formed CSE layer is capable of changing the effective work function (WF) of ITO. An increasing number of amino groups in the CSEs (from Cz1N to Cz3N) provides more reduction of the effective WF of ITO, which results in a lower internal resistance and a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE). Furthermore, the enhanced hydrogen bonding between the amines and ITO with an increased number of amine groups has been studied by XPS. This result suggests that one-step processing provides a reduction of the manufacturing cost, which can provide an attractive design concept for ETL fabrication.

TOF-SIMS Analysis Using Bi3 + as Primary Ions on Au Nanoparticles Supported by SiO2/Si: Providing Insight into Metal-Support Interactions

Au nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 20 nm with a coverage of ∼20% of the surface were distributed on a Si wafer surface and studied both before and after being annealed (at 100 and 300 °C). The two types of samples were analyzed using secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) with Bi3 + clusters as the primary ions combined with surface etching using Ar1000 + clusters. We observed a substantial difference in the SIMS spectra combined with a relatively short sputtering time of Ar1000 +. In the nonannealed samples, bare Au cluster cations and Si+ were observed in the SIMS spectra; AuSi+ clusters were also observed in the annealed samples. These results indicate Au-silicide formation at a part of the periphery of the Au nanoparticles upon annealing. We suggest that SIMS experiments using cluster ions such as Bi3 + can not only be used for surface elemental analyses but also provide information on local chemical environments of elements on the surface. This is an important issue in heterogeneous catalysis (e.g., strong metal-support interactions). We also advise that one should be careful interpreting the SIMS data combined with a longer Ar1000 + sputtering time because this can deteriorate the surfaces from their original structures.

Liquid chromatographic resolution of proline and pipecolic acid derivatives on chiral stationary phases based on (+)-(18-crown-6)-2,3,11,12-tetracarboxylic acid

Two liquid chromatographic chiral stationary phases based on (+)-(18-crown-6)-2,3,11,12-tetracarboxylic acid were applied to the resolution of the amide derivatives of cyclic α-amino acids including proline and pipecolic acid. Among the five amide derivatives of proline, aniline amide was resolved best on the first chiral stationary phase, which contains two N-H tethering amide groups, with the separation factor of 1.31 and the resolution of 2.60, and on the second chiral stationary phase, which contains two N-CH₃ tethering amide groups, with the separation factor of 1.57 and the resolution of 5.50. Among the five amide derivatives of pipecolic acid, 2-naphthyl amide was resolved best on the first chiral stationary phase with the separation factor of 1.30 and the resolution of 1.75, but 1-naphthylmethyl amide was resolved best on the second chiral stationary phase with the separation factor of 1.30 and the resolution of 2.26. In general, the second chiral stationary phase was found to be better than the first chiral stationary phase in the resolution of the amide derivatives of cyclic α-amino acids. In this study, the second chiral stationary phase was first demonstrated to be useful for the resolution of secondary amino compounds.

Metabolic Response of Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) Leaves Exposed to the Angular Leaf Spot Bacterium (Xanthomonas fragariae)

Plants have evolved various defense mechanisms against biotic stress. The most common mechanism involves the production of metabolites that act as defense compounds. Bacterial angular leaf spot disease (Xanthomonas fragariae) of the strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) has become increasingly destructive to strawberry leaves and plant production. In this study, we examined metabolic changes associated with the establishment of long-term bacterial disease stress using UPLC-QTOF mass spectrometry. Infected leaves showed decreased levels of gallic acid derivatives and ellagitannins, which are related to the plant defense system. The levels of phenylalanine, tryptophan, and salicylic acid as precursors of aromatic secondary metabolites were increased in inoculated leaves, whereas levels of coumaric acid, quinic acid, and flavonoids were decreased in infected plants, which are involved in the phenylpropanoid pathway. In addition, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity, a key enzyme in the phenylpropanoid pathway, was decreased following infection. These results suggest that long-term bacterial disease stress may lead to down-regulation of select molecules of the phenylpropanoid metabolic pathway in strawberry leaves. This approach could be applied to explore the metabolic pathway associated with plant protection/breeding in strawberry leaves.

Self-Assembled Silica Nanostructures: Simultaneous Discrimination of Handedness, Pitch and Diameter of Helical Silica Nanotubes

The left- and right-handed helical silica nanostructures were obtained with the aid of organic templates, the formation of the nanostructures might follow a co-operation self-assembly mechanism. The chirality of the organogel self-assemblies was successfully transcribed in to the silica. The helical pitch and pore size of the silica nanotubes sensitively depended on the optical purity of the neutral gelator in the reaction mixtures.

Polyphenolic profile and antioxidant effects of various parts of Artemisia annua L

An annual Korean weed, Artemisia annua L., has been used as a folk medicine for the treatment of a number of diseases. Remarkably, among the 32 polyphenols characterized in various parts of plant tissue, including flowers, leafs, stems and roots, 10 compounds were detected for the first time using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). The quantification method was validated using structurally related external standards with determination coefficients (R(2) ) ≥0.9995. The limits of detection and quantitation were 0.068-3.932 and 0.226-13.108 mg/L, respectively. The recoveries estimated at 50 and 100 mg/L ranged between 60.6-92.2 and 61.3-111%, respectively, with relative standard deviations <12%. The roots contained the largest concentration of identified components, while the flowers contained the least. The antioxidant capacity evaluated in terms of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical cation-scavenging activities and reducing power was highest in the roots and lowest in the flowers. The findings are well correlated and suggest that the antioxidant capacities principally depend upon the polyphenol concentrations in each part of the plant.

Adhesion of Poly(phenylene sulfide) Resin with Polymeric Film of Triazine Thiol on Aluminum Surface Modified by Anodic Oxidation

Various surface modifications have been applied to improve the adhesion properties of aluminum for the cap plate and sealing quality of electrolyte on Li ion batteries. In this study, we have tried to find the effective condition for the polymerization of triazine thiols (TT) on modified aluminum surfaces by anodic aluminum oxide. Characterization of polymerized films on aluminum was explored by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and secondary ion mass spectroscopy analysis. Scanning electron microscopy results reveal that meaningful roughness was formed on aluminum surfaces by anodic oxidation. Secondary ion mass spectroscopy analysis results represent that the peel strength was found to depend on film thickness and the composition of the adhesion layer. As a result, Al/PPS (polyphenylene sulfide) resin assemblies developed in this study have superior adhesive property. Therefore, these assemblies might be a viable candidate for a sealing technique for Li ion batteries.

Quantification of Blautia wexlerae and Blautia luti in human faeces by real-time PCR using specific primers

The Clostridium coccoides group, including the genus Blautia and other genera, is one of the predominant bacterial groups in the human intestine. We re-examined 266 human faecal clones and 58 isolates in the C. coccoides group isolated by Hayashi et al. (2002) in order to elucidate the detailed distribution of Blautia wexlerae and Blautia luti in human faeces. Subsequently, we designed a primer pair specific for B. wexlerae and B. luti based on the 16S ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA) gene sequence. The number of B. wexlerae and B. luti in faecal samples of 12 healthy Japanese subjects was examined by real-time PCR assay. The number of the C. coccoides group in the 12 faecal samples was also determined using C. coccoides group-specific primers. Re-examination of the human faecal clones and isolates revealed that B. wexlerae and B. luti accounted for 19.5% of the clones and 25.9% of the isolates. B. wexlerae and B. luti were detected in all faecal samples with 5.3±3.2×10(9) cells/g faeces (wet weight, average ± standard deviation) as assessed by real-time PCR. Furthermore, B. wexlerae and B. luti constituted 32.3±12.7% (average ± standard deviation) of the C. coccoides group (1.7±0.8×10(10) cells/g faeces). This demonstrates that B. wexlerae and B. luti were presented in human faeces with a high frequency as the dominant bacteria.

The effects of different night-time temperatures and cultivation durations on the polyphenolic contents of lettuce: Application of principal component analysis

The present study was conducted to characterize the polyphenolic contents of lettuce leaves grown under different night-time temperatures (4, 12, and 20 °C) and cultivation durations (5, 15, and 20 days) using high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). The assay method was validated based on specificity, linearity, accuracy, precision, and the performance limit. The total polyphenolic contents were highest (2462.6 mg/kg) after transplantation at a night temperature of 20 °C on day 20 and lowest (1132.7 mg/kg) at the same temperature on day 5. Quantification and principal component analysis showed that the relative contents of quercetin and kaempferol were markedly higher during the early stage of cultivation (day 5) than those of day 15 and 20, and that night-time temperatures of 12 and 20 °C on day 20 were favorable for producing polyphenol-rich lettuce containing caffeic acid. In conclusion, a synergistic effect between high night-time temperatures (12 and 20 °C) and cultivation duration (20 days) produced lettuce rich in polyphenols compared to that at low temperature (4 °C).

Remarkable flux effect of Li-codoping on highly enhanced luminescence of orthosilicate Ba2SiO4:Eu2+ phosphors for NUV-LEDs: autonomous impurity purification by eutectic Li2CO3 melts

The PL intensity of Li-doped Ba₂SiO₄:Eu²⁺ (Li = 200% excess) is found to be 470% higher than that of Ba₂SiO₄:Eu²⁺ (no-Li). The excess Li₂CO₃ autonomously removes the impurities contained in the low-purity precursors, in particular SiO₂.

Rubi Fructus (Rubus coreanus) activates the expression of thermogenic genes in vivo and in vitro

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the anti-obesity effect of Rubi Fructus (RF) extract using brown adipose tissue (BAT) and primary brown preadipocytes in vivo and in vitro.

METHODS

Male C57BL/6 J mice (n=5 per group) were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) for 10 weeks with or without RF. Brown preadipocytes from the interscapular BAT of mice (age, post-natal days 1-3) were cultured with differentiation media (DM) including isobutylmethylxanthine, dexamethasone, T3, indomethacin and insulin with or without RF.

RESULTS

In HFD-induced obese C57BL/6 J mice, long-term RF treatment significantly reduced weight gain as well as the weights of the white adipose tissue, liver and spleen. Serum levels of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were also reduced in the HFD group which received RF treatment. Furthermore, RF induced thermogenic-, adipogenic- and mitochondria-related gene expressions in BAT. In primary brown adipocytes, RF effectively stimulated the expressions of thermogenic- and mitochondria-related genes. In addition, to examine whether LIPIN1, a regulator of adipocyte differentiation, is regulated by RF, Lipin1 small interfering RNA (siRNA) and RF were pretreated in primary brown adipocytes. Pretreatment with Lipin1 siRNA and RF downregulated the DM-induced expression levels of thermogenic- and mitochondria-related genes. Moreover, RF markedly upregulated AMP-activated protein kinase. Our study shows that RF is capable of stimulating the differentiation of brown adipocytes through the modulation of thermogenic genes.

CONCLUSIONS

This study demonstrates that RF prevents the development of obesity in mice fed with a HFD and that it is also capable of stimulating the differentiation of brown adipocytes through the modulation of thermogenic genes, which suggests that RF has potential as a therapeutic application for the treatment or prevention of obesity.

Determination of Polyphenol Components of Korean Prostrate Spurge (Euphorbia supina) by Using Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry: Overall Contribution to Antioxidant Activity

The Korean prostrate spurge Euphorbia supina is a weed that has been used in folk medicine in Korea against a variety of diseases. Nine polyphenols were characterized for this plant by using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) and the results were compared with the literature data. The individual components were validated using the calibration curves of structurally related external standards and quantified for the first time by using the validated method. Correlation coefficients (r (2)) were >0.9907. The limit of detection and limit of quantification of the method were >0.028 mg/L and 0.094 mg/L, respectively. Recoveries measured at 50 mg/L and 100 mg/L were 76.1-102.8% and 85.2-98.6%, respectively. The total amount of the identified polyphenols was 3352.9 ± 2.8 mg/kg fresh plant. Quercetin and kaempferol derivatives formed 84.8% of the total polyphenols. The antioxidant activities of the flavonoids were evaluated in terms of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical cation-scavenging activity, and the reducing power showed a dose-dependent increase. Cell viability was effectively suppressed at polyphenol mixture concentrations >250 mg/L.

Green chemical approach: microwave assisted, titanium dioxide nanoparticles catalyzed, convenient and efficient C–C bond formation in the synthesis of highly functionalized quinolines and quinolinones

TiO₂ nanoparticles was effectively applied in the microwave assisted synthesis of quinolines and quinolones.

Determination of the variations in levels of phenolic compounds in soybean (Glycine max Merr.) sprouts infected by anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides)

BACKGROUND

Soybean sprouts (Kongnamool) are one of the most popular and nutritive traditional vegetables in East Asia. Anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is one of the most serious diseases of soybean sprouts. In order to obtain basic information for breeding and/or selecting soybean genotypes with increased natural defense against anthracnose, phenolic compounds were profiled for healthy and infected soybean (Glycine max Merr.) sprouts by using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry.

RESULTS

Tryptophan and eight phenolic compounds (daidzin, genistin, malonyldaidzin, malonylgenistin, daidzein, glycitein, genistein and coumestrol) were determined from healthy and inoculated sprouts. Total identified phenolic content was 40.02 ± 0.03 mg kg⁻¹, 99.4% of which was isoflavones.

CONCLUSION

The monitoring suggested that de novo induced glycitein appeared to act as a phytoalexin in the defence mechanism of the soybean sprouts against C. gloeosporioides, and constitutively formed seven phenolic components that functioned as phytoanticipins in the diseased soybean sprouts.

Analysis of the human intestinal microbiota from 92 volunteers after ingestion of identical meals

The intestinal microbiota composition of 92 volunteers living in Japan was identified following the consumption of 'identical meals' (1,879 kcal/day) for 3 days. When faecal samples were analysed by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism with several primer-restriction enzyme systems and then clustered, the patterns could be divided into 2 clusters. Contribution tests and partition modelling showed that OTU211 of the 35f-MspI system and OTU237 of the 35f-AluI system were key factors in the distribution of these groups. However, significant differences among these groups in terms of body mass index and age were not observed.

3-[(2-chloroquinolin-3-yl)methyl]quinazolin-4(3H)-ones as potential larvicidal agents

The larvicidal effect of series of 3-[(2-chloroquinolin-3-yl)methyl] uinazolin-4(3H)-ones, 5a-e, against Chironomus tentans Fabricius has been investigated. The results showed that tested compounds demonstrated strong larvicidal activity, and caused high percentage of mortality after 24 h at the doses of 40-100 g/ml, especially in the case of 3-[(2-chloro-8-methyquinolin-3-yl)methyl]quinazolin-4(3H)-one, 5b, that act as a promising larvicidal agent.

Influences of four different light-emitting diode lights on flowering and polyphenol variations in the leaves of chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium)

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are an efficient alternative to traditional lamps for plant growth. To investigate the influence of LEDs on flowering and polyphenol biosynthesis in the leaves of chrysanthemum, the plants were grown under supplemental blue, green, red, and white LEDs. Flower budding was formed even after a longer photoperiod than a critical day length of 13.5 h per day under blue light illumination. The weights of leaves and stems were highest under the white light illumination growth condition, whereas the weight of roots appeared to be independent of light quality. Among nine polyphenols characterized by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectroscopy, three polyphenols were identified for the first time in chrysanthemum. A quantitation and principal component analysis biplot demonstrated that luteolin-7-O-glucoside (2), luteolin-7-O-glucuronide (3), and quercetagetin-trimethyl ether (8) were the highest polyphenols yielded under green light, and dicaffeoylquinic acid isomer (4), dicaffeoylquinic acid isomer (5), naringenin (7), and apigenin-7-O-glucuronide (6) were greatest under red light. Chlorogenic acid (1) and 1,2,6-trihydroxy-7,8-dimethoxy-3-methylanthraquinone (9) were produced in similar concentrations under both light types. The white and blue light appeared inefficient for polyphenol production. Taken together, our results suggest that the chrysanthemum flowering and polyphenol production are influenced by light quality composition.

Plasma treatment effect on dye-sensitized solar cell efficiency of hydrothermal-processed TiO2 nanorods

Atmospheric plasma (AP) treatment was carried out on TiO2 nanorods (NRs) that were hydrothermally grown on F-doped SnO2 (FTO)/glass. The effects of AP treatment on the surface of the TiO2 NRs were investigated, where the treatment involved the use of the reactive gases H2, N2, and O2. The surface energy of AP-treated TiO2 NRs was about 1.5 times higher than that of untreated TiO2 NRs (364.3 mJ/m2). After AP treatment, the increase of the peak area ratios of the Ti2O3 and TiO2 peaks in the XPS spectra resulted in a decrease in the number of oxygen vacancies in the TiO2 NRs. The efficiency of a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) based on the N2-plasma-treated TiO2 NRs, which was approximately 1.11%, was about 79% higher than that of a DSSC based on the untreated TiO2 NRs.

Flavonoid profiling in three citrus varieties native to the Republic of Korea using liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry: contribution to overall antioxidant activity

A mixture of flavonoid components was isolated from the fruit peel of three varieties of citrus native to Republic of Korea, Citrus leiocarpa Hort. ex Tanaka (CLHT), Citrus aurantium L. (CAL) and Citrus erythrosa Hort. (CEH), via 70% methanol extraction followed by ethyl acetate elution over a silica gel cartridge. The flavonoid components of the mixture were analyzed via high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) in positive-ion mode and a comparison of the reported data. Among 17 characterized components, two flavanones, four flavones and two coumarin derivatives in the fruit peel of the three varieties were identified for the first time. The individual characterized components were quantified via HPLC-UV. The flavanones dominated in CAL, whereas the flavones prevailed in CLHT and CEH. The antioxidant activity of the flavonoid mixture of the fruit peel was determined via DPPH•, ABTS•⁺ and reducing power assays. The antioxidant activity of CEH and CAL was greater than that of CLHT.
