Abstract
The inclusive electron neutrino charged-current cross section is measured in the NOvA near detector using 8.02×10^{20} protons-on-target in the NuMI beam. The sample of GeV electron neutrino interactions is the largest analyzed to date and is limited by ≃17% systematic rather than the ≃7.4% statistical uncertainties. The double-differential cross section in final-state electron energy and angle is presented for the first time, together with the single-differential dependence on Q^{2} (squared four-momentum transfer) and energy, in the range 1 GeV≤E_{ν}<6 GeV. Detailed comparisons are made to the predictions of the GENIE, GiBUU, NEUT, and NuWro neutrino event generators. The data do not strongly favor a model over the others consistently across all three cross sections measured, though some models have especially good or poor agreement in the single differential cross section vs Q^{2}.

Abstract
This Letter reports results from the first long-baseline search for sterile antineutrinos mixing in an accelerator-based antineutrino-dominated beam. The rate of neutral-current interactions in the two NOvA detectors, at distances of 1 and 810 km from the beam source, is analyzed using an exposure of 12.51×10^{20} protons-on-target from the NuMI beam at Fermilab running in antineutrino mode. A total of 121 of neutral-current candidates are observed at the far detector, compared to a prediction of 122±11(stat.)±15(syst.) assuming mixing only between three active flavors. No evidence for ν[over ¯]_{μ}→ν[over ¯]_{s} oscillation is observed. Interpreting this result within a 3+1 model, constraints are placed on the mixing angles θ_{24}<25° and θ_{34}<32° at the 90% C.L. for 0.05 eV^{2}≤Δm_{41}^{2}≤0.5 eV^{2}, the range of mass splittings that produces no significant oscillations at the near detector. These are the first 3+1 confidence limits set using long-baseline accelerator antineutrinos.

Abstract
The NOvA experiment has seen a 4.4σ signal of ν[over ¯]_{e} appearance in a 2 GeV ν[over ¯]_{μ} beam at a distance of 810 km. Using 12.33×10^{20} protons on target delivered to the Fermilab NuMI neutrino beamline, the experiment recorded 27 ν[over ¯]_{μ}→ν[over ¯]_{e} candidates with a background of 10.3 and 102 ν[over ¯]_{μ}→ν[over ¯]_{μ} candidates. This new antineutrino data are combined with neutrino data to measure the parameters |Δm_{32}^{2}|=2.48_{-0.06}^{+0.11}×10^{-3} eV^{2}/c^{4} and sin^{2}θ_{23} in the ranges from (0.53-0.60) and (0.45-0.48) in the normal neutrino mass hierarchy. The data exclude most values near δ_{CP}=π/2 for the inverted mass hierarchy by more than 3σ and favor the normal neutrino mass hierarchy by 1.9σ and θ_{23} values in the upper octant by 1.6σ.

Abstract
ZusammenfassungBei einem dreijährigen Jungen fiel bereits bei der Geburt ein dyspropor-tionierter Überwuchs des linken Fußes sowie ein großer Naevus flam-meus mit nodulären Veränderungen im Bereich der linken Hüfte auf, so daß der Verdacht auf ein Klippel-Trenaunay-Syndrom geäußert wurde. Im Laufe der weiteren Entwicklung kam es zu einer kontinuierlichen Progredienz dieser Befunde, mit deutlicher Weichteilschwellung sowie pa-pillomatösen und verruziformen Vegetationen des Naevus. Darüber hinaus entwickelte sich auch unterhalb der rechten Schulter eine großflächige, flache Raumforderung sowie eine Makrodaktylie der I. und II. Zehe links. Trotz zahlreicher zwischenzeitlich durchgeführter diagnostischer Maßnahmen konnte die Verdachtsdiagnose bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht bestätigt werden. Anläßlich einer ausgeprägten lokalen Infektion im Hüftbereich, die die Frage nach einer operativen Sanierung aufwarf, wurden – um eine längere Ruhigstellung des Jungen zu vermeiden – am gleichen Tag eine Lymphabflußszintigraphie, eine Radio-nuklidphlebographie und -ventrikulographie sowie eine Blutpool- und Skelettszintigraphie durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse ließen ein Lymphangiom vermuten, das nach operativer Entfernung des Befundes histologisch bestätigt werden konnte. Unter Berücksichtigung aller Untersuchungsergebnisse dürfte es sich bei dem zugrundeliegenden Krankheitsbild nicht um ein Klippel-Trenaunay-Syndrom, sondern um das seltene Proteus-Syndrom handeln.

Abstract
This Letter reports new results on muon neutrino disappearance from NOvA, using a 14 kton detector equivalent exposure of 6.05×10^{20} protons on target from the NuMI beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The measurement probes the muon-tau symmetry hypothesis that requires maximal θ_{23} mixing (θ_{23}=π/4). Assuming the normal mass hierarchy, we find Δm_{32}^{2}=(2.67±0.11)×10^{-3} eV^{2} and sin^{2}θ_{23} at the two statistically degenerate values 0.404_{-0.022}^{+0.030} and 0.624_{-0.030}^{+0.022}, both at the 68% confidence level. Our data disfavor the maximal mixing scenario with 2.6σ significance.

Abstract
We report results from the first search for ν_{μ}→ν_{e} transitions by the NOvA experiment. In an exposure equivalent to 2.74×10^{20} protons on target in the upgraded NuMI beam at Fermilab, we observe 6 events in the Far Detector, compared to a background expectation of 0.99±0.11(syst) events based on the Near Detector measurement. A secondary analysis observes 11 events with a background of 1.07±0.14(syst). The 3.3σ excess of events observed in the primary analysis disfavors 0.1π<δ_{CP}<0.5π in the inverted mass hierarchy at the 90% C.L.

Abstract
ZEUS study was an open-label, 12-month, multicenter study in which 300 de novo kidney transplant recipients were randomized to continue receiving cyclosporine (CsA) or convert to everolimus at 4.5 months posttransplant. Five-year follow-up data were available for 245/269 patients (91.1%) who completed the core 12-month study (123 everolimus, 109 CsA). At 5 years, adjusted estimated GFR was 66.2 mL/min/1.73 m(2) with everolimus versus 60.9 mL/min/1.73 m(2) with CsA; the mean difference was 5.3 mL/min/1.73 m(2) in favor of everolimus (95% CI 2.4, 8.3; p < 0.001 [intent-to-treat population]). In a post hoc analysis of patients remaining on study drug at 5 years (everolimus 77, CsA 86), mean difference was 8.2 mL/min/1.73 m(2) (95% CI 4.3, 12.1; p < 0.001) in favor of everolimus. The cumulative incidence of biopsy-proven acute rejection postrandomization was 13.6% with everolimus versus 7.5% with CsA (p = 0.095), largely accounted for by grade I rejection (16/21 patients and 7/11 patients, respectively). Postrandomization, graft loss, mortality, serious adverse events and neoplasms were similar in both arms. In conclusion, conversion of kidney transplant patients to everolimus at 4.5 months posttransplant is associated with a significant improvement in renal function that is maintained to at least 5 years. The increase in early mild acute rejection did not affect long-term graft function.

Abstract
Infection with cytomegalovirus (CMV) shows a worldwide high prevalence with only immunocompromised individuals or newborns to become symptomatic. The host's constitution and the pathogen's virulence determine whether disease occurs after infection. Mouse CMV (MCMV) is an appreciated pathogen for in vivo investigation of host-pathogen interactions. It has recently been reported that a single base pair deletion can spontaneously occur in the open reading frame of MCMV-encoded chemokine 2 (MCK2), preventing the expression of the full-length gene product. To study the consequences of this mutation, we compared the Mck2-defective reporter virus MCMV-3D with the newly generated repaired Mck2(+) mutant MCMV-3DR. Compared with MCMV-3D, neonatal mice infected with MCMV-3DR showed severe viral disease after lung infection. Viral disease coincided with high viral activity in multiple organs and increased virus replication in previously described nodular inflammatory foci (NIF) in the lung. Notably, MCMV-3DR showed tropism for alveolar macrophages in vitro and in vivo, whereas MCMV-3D did not infect this cell type. Moreover, in vivo depletion of alveolar macrophages reduced MCMV-3DR replication in the lung. We proposed an Mck2-mediated mechanism by which MCMV exploits alveolar macrophages to increase replication upon first encounter with the host's lung mucosa.

Abstract
Es werden IR-Spektren von Mono-, Di- und Trihydroxyprogesteronen im Bereich der C-OH-Valenzschwingung von 1000 cm-1 bis 1150 cm-1 beschrieben. Nur bei tertiären Hydroxylgruppen liegen die Absorptionsbanden innerhalb eines charakteristischen Wellenzahlbereichs. Die festgestellten Beziehungen zwischen äquatorialer und axialer Stellung der Hydroxylgruppen und den Wellenzahlen der C-OH-Absorptionsbanden lassen keine Verallgemeinerungen zu.

Abstract
Mit Hilfe des Schimmelpilzes Calonectria decora werden Progesteron-Derivate mit Sauerstoff-Funktionen an C9, C11, C12, C14, C17 und C21 stereospezifisch in 12β- oder 15α-Stellung hydroxyliert. Aus diesen Umsetzungen wurden folgende Verbindungen erhalten: 9α,15α-Dihydroxyprogesteron, 14α,12/β-Dihydroxyprogesteron, 15α,17x.21-Trihydroxyprogesteron, 11-Keto-15α-Hydroxyprogesteron, 12-Keto-15α-Hydroxyprogesteron.

Abstract
Using a set of approaches based on the use of molecular cytogenetic markers (DAPI/C-banding, estimation of the total area of DAPI-positive regions in prophase nuclei, FISH with 26S and 5S rDNA probes) and the microsatellite (SSR-PCR) assay, we studied genomic polymorphism in 15 flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) varieties from different geographic regions belonging to three directions of selection (oil, fiber, and intermediate flaxes) and in the k-37 x Viking hybrid. All individual chromosomes have been identified in the karyotypes of these varieties on the basis of the patterns of differential DAPI/C-banding and the distribution of 26S and 5S rDNA, and idiograms of the chromosomes have been generated. Unlike the oil flax varieties, the chromosomes in the karyotypes of the fiber flax varieties have, as a rule, pericentromeric and telomeric DAPI-positive bands of smaller size, but contain larger intercalary regions. Two chromosomal rearrangements (chromosome 3 inversions) were discovered in the variety Luna and in the k-37 x Viking hybrid. In both these forms, no colocalization of 26S rDNA and 5S rDNA on the satellite chromosome was detected. The SSR assay with the use of 20 polymorphic pairs of primers revealed 22 polymorphic loci. Based on the SSR data, we analyzed genetic similarity of the flax forms studied and constructed a genetic similarity dendrogram. The genotypes studied here form three clusters. The oil varieties comprise an independent cluster. The genetically related fiber flax varieties Vita and Luna, as well as the landrace Lipinska XIII belonging to the intermediate type, proved to be closer to the oil varieties than the remaining fiber flax varieties. The results of the molecular chromosomal analysis in the fiber and oil flaxes confirm their very close genetic similarity. In spite of this, the combined use of the chromosomal and molecular markers has opened up unique possibilities for describing the genotypes of flax varieties and creating their genetic passports.

The objective of the study was to isolate potential probiotic lactobacilli from Kimere, a pearl millet dough prepared in the Mbeere community of Kenya, East Africa, by fermentation for 18-24 hours. Kimere samples, collected from 11 different homesteads in Mbeere, showed average pH values of 3.63±0.29. Counts of presumptive lactobacilli were 8.52±0.02 log10 colony forming units per gram, respectively. 48 presumptive Lactobacillus isolates were characterised and identified by biochemical and molecular methods. Lactobacillus fermentum (46 isolates) was the dominant Lactobacillus species detected. Analysis of strain diversity with pulsed-field gel electrophoresis indicated relatively large biodiversity among L. fermentum isolates. All L. fermentum isolates were able to grow in MRS medium containing 0.3% ox gall. Twelve of them were able to grow in the presence of 3% ox gall, and of these 60% survived incubation at pH 3 in the presence of 2 mg pepsin per ml for three hours.

Abstract
This Letter reports on a search for nu(mu) --> nu(e) transitions by the MINOS experiment based on a 3.14x10(20) protons-on-target exposure in the Fermilab NuMI beam. We observe 35 events in the Far Detector with a background of 27+/-5(stat)+/-2(syst) events predicted by the measurements in the Near Detector. If interpreted in terms of nu(mu) --> nu(e) oscillations, this 1.5sigma excess of events is consistent with sin2(2theta(13)) comparable to the CHOOZ limit when |Delta m2|=2.43x10(-3) eV2 and sin2(2theta(23))=1.0 are assumed.

Abstract
We report the first detailed comparisons of the rates and spectra of neutral-current neutrino interactions at two widely separated locations. A depletion in the rate at the far site would indicate mixing between nu(mu) and a sterile particle. No anomalous depletion in the reconstructed energy spectrum is observed. Assuming oscillations occur at a single mass-squared splitting, a fit to the neutral- and charged-current energy spectra limits the fraction of nu(mu) oscillating to a sterile neutrino to be below 0.68 at 90% confidence level. A less stringent limit due to a possible contribution to the measured neutral-current event rate at the far site from nu(e) appearance at the current experimental limit is also presented.

Abstract
A search for a sidereal modulation in the MINOS near detector neutrino data was performed. If present, this signature could be a consequence of Lorentz and CPT violation as predicted by the effective field theory called the standard-model extension. No evidence for a sidereal signal in the data set was found, implying that there is no significant change in neutrino propagation that depends on the direction of the neutrino beam in a sun-centered inertial frame. Upper limits on the magnitudes of the Lorentz and CPT violating terms in the standard-model extension lie between 10(-4) and 10(-2) of the maximum expected, assuming a suppression of these signatures by a factor of 10(-17).

Abstract
This Letter reports new results from the MINOS experiment based on a two-year exposure to muon neutrinos from the Fermilab NuMI beam. Our data are consistent with quantum-mechanical oscillations of neutrino flavor with mass splitting |Deltam2| = (2.43+/-0.13) x 10(-3) eV2 (68% C.L.) and mixing angle sin2(2theta) > 0.90 (90% C.L.). Our data disfavor two alternative explanations for the disappearance of neutrinos in flight: namely, neutrino decays into lighter particles and quantum decoherence of neutrinos, at the 3.7 and 5.7 standard-deviation levels, respectively.

Abstract
This Letter reports results from the MINOS experiment based on its initial exposure to neutrinos from the Fermilab NuMI beam. The rates and energy spectra of charged current nu(mu) interactions are compared in two detectors located along the beam axis at distances of 1 and 735 km. With 1.27 x 10(20) 120 GeV protons incident on the NuMI target, 215 events with energies below 30 GeV are observed at the Far Detector, compared to an expectation of 336+/-14 events. The data are consistent with nu(mu) disappearance via oscillations with |Delta(m)2/32|=2.74 +0.44/-0.26 x10(-3)eV(2) and sin(2)(2theta(23))>0.87 (68% C.L.).

Abstract
5577 Background: Management of neck disease in patients with Head and Neck Squamous cell cancer (HNC) who are initially treated with combined radiation and chemotherapy (CRT) remains controversial. Standard treatment options include neck dissection (ND) or close observation. More recently PET scans have been used to stage and monitor response to therapy in patients with HNC. We performed a retrospective analysis of patients diagnosed with HNC stages N2b or higher, treated with combined CRT, and who were monitored for disease response by PET scans. Our observations on the utility of PET scans in monitoring response to therapy and in determining the role of elective NDs in this setting are reported. Methods: A retrospective review of medical records of all patients diagnosed at our institution with HNC Stages TxN2b, N2c or N3 between the years 2002 and 2005 was undertaken. IRB approval was obtained for this study.To be eligible for this analysis, patients must have had baseline and follow up PET scans at the end of CRT and prior to ND. Data regarding age, gender, primary tumor site, stage, baseline and follow up PET scan results, operative pathology of ND when performed, and local control were recorded. Results: Fifteen patients were identified. Median age was 55 years (range 37–76). Male: Female ratio was 13:2. Primary site of tumor was Pharynx (Base of tongue: n = 3, tonsil: n = 11); Lip and oral cavity: n = 1. Stages: IVa : n = 12; IVb: n = 3. N stage: N2b: n = 12; N2c: n = 1; N3: n = 2. Post CRT, all patients were followed with serial clinical examinations, PET ± CT scans. 13 of 15 patients had negative PET activity in the neck at the completion of CRT and remain disease free in the neck at a median follow up of one year. Post treatment PET scans were positive at the primary site in 2 of 15 patients; and positive in the neck in 2 of 15 patients. These 4 patients underwent ND after completing CRT. Operative pathology was positive for nodal disease in 2 of 4 patients who had persistent mild or significant activity on PET scan either at the primary site or in the neck. Conclusions: Post CRT PET negativity in the neck and at the site of primary tumor is associated with continued disease free status in the neck and these patients may be managed conservatively without requiring a neck dissection. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate all published case reports of torsade de pointes (TdP) induced by psychotropic drugs (PDs) in order to examine the prevalence of risk factors for TdP prior to the drug initiation. METHOD We found 45 reports on 70 patients with TdP induced by PDs. Each report was analyzed for the presence of risk factors for TdP: female gender, heart disease, hypokalemia, high doses of offending agent, concomitant use of a QT interval prolonging agent, and a history of long-QT syndrome. RESULTS Female gender was the most common risk factor for TdP (71.4%). The other studied risk factors were also frequently present (34.2-14.2%). Nearly all patients had at least one and 51 (73%) patients had >2 risk factors for TdP prior to PD initiation. CONCLUSION We wish to raise the level of awareness of risk factors for TdP in the psychiatric community.

Abstract
Acutely ill children (n = 129) aged 1-6 years receiving antibiotic therapy were randomized to receive a nutritional supplement with (PS) or without (P) synbiotics or a fruit-flavored drink (D) with their medications. Group PS had significantly greater weight gains (versus D) following antibiotic therapy. The percentages of subjects without bacterial illnesses 14 days following antibiotic therapy were as follows: 94.3% (PS), 87.8% (D), and 80.6% (P). PS (vs D) significantly increased fecal Lactobacillus in a subset of subjects. Oral supplements increase energy intake and promote weight gain in acutely ill children receiving antibiotics; synbiotics may confer additional benefits by increasing bifidobacteria levels.

Abstract
Based on 1.35 x 10(6) polarized Xi(-) events, we measure the parameter phi(Xi) to be -1.61 degrees +/-2.66 degrees +/-0.37 degrees for the Xi(-)-->Lambda pi(-) decay. New results for the parameters beta(Xi) and gamma(Xi) are also presented. Assuming that the CP-violating phase difference is negligible, we deduce the strong phase difference between the P-wave and S-wave amplitudes of the Lambda pi final state to be 3.17 degrees +/-5.28 degrees +/-0.73 degrees, reducing the uncertainty in estimating the level of CP violation in Xi-hyperon decay.

Abstract
In adult patients, laparoscopic surgery, using a robot system (Da Vinci, Intuitive Surgical, Mountain View, California), has been recently introduced into surgical practice. To investigate the feasibility of the system in paediatric surgery, laparoscopic fundoplications as well as cholecystectomies have been performed. In July 2000 we used the robot system for the first time on an 11-year-old girl with gastro-oesophageal reflux, and since that time on 7 other children. Altogether 5 Thal and 3 Nissen procedures have been carried out. The average age was 12 years, with a range of 7 to 16 years. All operations were performed without complications and without conversion to open surgery. The medium operating time was 146 min with a range of 105 to 180 minutes. Compared to conventional laparoscopy, the 3-dimensional high-quality vision, the advanced instrument movements and the ergonomic position of the surgeon seems to enhance surgical precision. In our opinion, the use of the robot system is feasible and safe in paediatric surgery. The technique is limited due to the fact that instruments adapted to the size of small children are not yet available.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Laparoscopic surgery using a robotic system (Da Vinci) was recently introduced into surgical practice for adult patients. To investigate the feasibility of this system in pediatric surgery, laparoscopic fundoplication (Thal and Nissen), cholecystectomy, and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy were performed. METHODS Eleven children with a mean age of 12 years (range, 7-16 years) underwent either laparoscopic anterior partial fundoplication (Thal, n = 8) or Nissen fundoplication (n = 3) for correction of gastroesophageal reflux disease in the presence of uncontrolled symptoms of regurgitation and pulmonary infection. Two children underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy due to symptomatic cholecystolithiasis. One child underwent bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy due to a gonadoblastoma. RESULTS Mean operating time for fundoplication was 146 min (range, 105-180 min), the operating times for cholecystectomy were 150 and 105 min, and that for salpingo-oophorectomy was 95 min. No complications were registered during either the robotic procedures or the postoperative courses. CONCLUSIONS Compared to conventional laparoscopy, the three-dimensional high-quality vision, advanced instrument movement, and improved ergonomic position of the surgeon appear to enhance surgical precision. Robotic surgery in children using the Da Vinci system seems to be feasible and safe. However, the technique is limited due to the fact that instruments adapted to the size of small children are not available. Furthermore, the high costs and prolonged system setup are disadvantages.

Abstract
The Da Vinci robot device represents the latest advance in laparoendoscopic surgery. We report the case of an endoscopic Nissen fundoplication performed with the aid of a telemanipulation robot system in a 10-year-old girl. To our knowledge, this is the first such case to be reported. In addition to standard monitoring, we used invasive blood pressure monitoring during the 282-min period of general anesthesia. Arterial blood gas samples were analyzed at short intervals. During surgery, which included a 172-min period of intraperitoneal insufflation of carbon dioxide (CO2), no significant changes were observed in PH, arterial oxygen pressure (PaO2), arterial carbon dioxide pressure (PaCO2), heart rate, or mean arterial pressure. Body temperature was maintained with an external warming blanket. Total intravenous anesthesia with continously administered propofol, remifentanil, and mivacurium for continous muscle relaxation allowed extubation immediately after skin closure. The girl was discharged from hospital on postoperative day 6. Robot-assisted techniques have the potential to significantly improve the performance of laparoendoscopic surgery. However, despite our encouraging first results, the potential risks of robot-assisted surgery have not yet been definitively established. Therefore, patients submitted to this type of procedure require intensive and even invasive monitoring.

Abstract
The influences that link social factors and caries development are not well understood, although mediation by stress has been suggested. The association between caregiver stress and early childhood caries (ECC), in particular, remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between parenting stress and ECC while controlling for behavioral and biological factors in a high-risk population. One hundred and fifty healthy children aged 18-36 months were examined in a cross-sectional study design. Parental interviews were conducted to obtain demographic, oral health behavior and parenting stress data. Clinical data included parent and child bacterial measures, fingernail fluoride analyses, caries prevalence and presence of child enamel hypoplasia. Bivariate analyses revealed that parenting stress predicted caries. Multivariate analyses demonstrated that a combination of psychosocial, behavioral, temporal and biological variables predicted ECC outcomes. Total parenting stress did not contribute independently to the best prediction model. Our findings suggest the need for the development of a multidimensional stress model that considers the parent-child dyad to elucidate further the link between psychosocial factors and ECC.

Abstract
Health hazards from occupational exposure to trace concentrations of anaesthetic gases cannot be definitively excluded. The aim of the study was to determine the surgeon's occupational exposure to nitrous oxide and sevoflurane during pediatric surgical procedures. Twenty young children (age < 10 years) and five teenagers (age > 10 years) underwent elective abdominal surgery under general inhalational anesthesia. The operating room was equipped with modern air conditioning and waste anesthetic gas scavenger. Levels of both nitrous oxide and sevoflurane were determined in the breathing zone of the surgeon and the anesthesiologist during the operative procedures by means of a direct-reading photoacoustic infrared spectrometer. Both the surgeon and the anesthesiologist were exposed to low concentrations of the inhalational agents used. Exposure to sevoflurane and nitrous oxide was clearly higher during surgery in young children than during operative procedures in teenagers. Nonetheless, the concentrations of these agents were well below the threshold limits of 25 ppm for nitrous oxide and 2 ppm for sevoflurane recommended by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. General anesthesia results in operating room air pollution with inhalational anesthetics. Under modern air conditioning, personnel's occupational exposure is low, and inhalational anesthesia is safe from the standpoint of modern workplace laws and health care regulations. Nonetheless, all efforts must be taken to maintain occupational exposure at this low level.

Abstract
The robot device "da Vinci" represents the latest stage in laparoendoscopic surgery. We report the first two cases worldwide of endoscopic Nissen fundoplication with a telemanipulatory robot system in two children, aged 10 and 12 years. In addition to standard monitoring, we used invasive blood pressure monitoring during the 300 min periods of general anesthesia. Arterial blood gas samples were analyzed in short intervals. During surgery, which included 177 and 180 min periods of intraperitoneal insufflation of carbon dioxide, no significant changes of pH, PaO2, PaCO2, etCO2, heart rate, and mean arterial pressure were observed. Body temperature was maintained with an external warming blanket. Extubation was achieved immediately after the end of the operation, and both patients were discharged home on postoperative day 6. Robot-assisted techniques may possibly add significant progress and improvement to laparoendoscopic surgery. Nonetheless, we conclude that, despite our first encouraging results, potential risks of robot-assisted surgery have not yet been definitively defined. Therefore, patients are in need for intensive and even invasive monitoring, unless a larger number of patients has been studied.

Abstract
Studies in animal models of spontaneous Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroiditis (HT) show that prophylactic treatment with levothyroxine (LT4) can reduce incidence and degree of lymphocytic infiltration in HT. The aim of the present study was to clarify whether there is a benefit of prophylactic treatment with LT4 in patients with euthyroid HT with respect to the progression of the autoimmune process. Twenty-one patients with euthyroid HT were checked for thyroid function (thyrotropin [TSH], free triiodothyronine [FT3], free thyroxine [FT4]), thyroid volume, antibodies (thyroglobulin [Tg-Ab], thyroid peroxidase [TPO-Ab]), and lymphocyte subsets. Peripheral (PBL) and thyroid-derived lymphocytes (TL) were analyzed by triple color flow cytometry. One-half of the patients with euthyroid HT were treated with LT4 for 1 year (n = 10). The other half (n = 11) were never treated with LT4. TL were obtained by fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB). Thirteen healthy subjects (C) without medical history of thyroid disease served as controls concerning PBL, and patients with non-toxic nodular goiter (NG; n = 10) served as controls concerning TL. Thyroid-derived T-helper cells were found more frequently in euthyroid patients with HT compared to patients with NG (p < 0.01). After 1 year of therapy with LT4, TPO-Abs and B lymphocytes decreased significantly only in the treated group of euthyroid patients with HT (p < 0.05). In contrast, TPO-Abs levels did not change or even increased in untreated euthyroid patients with HT. Thyroid volume did not differ before and after therapy. Prophylactic treatment of euthyroid patients with HT reduced both serological and cellular markers of autoimmune thyroiditis. Therefore, prophylactic LT4 treatment might be useful to stop the progression or even manifestation of the disease. However, the long-term clinical benefit of prophylactic LT4 therapy in euthyroid patients with HT is yet to be established.

Abstract
A search for direct CP violation in the nonleptonic decays of hyperons has been performed. In comparing the product of the decay parameters, alpha(Xi)alpha(Lambda), in terms of an asymmetry parameter, A(XiLambda), between hyperons and antihyperons in the charged Xi-->Lambdapi and Lambda-->ppi decay sequence, we found no evidence of direct CP violation. The parameter A(XiLambda) was measured to be 0.012+/-0.014.

Abstract
Cross-sectional studies have found older adults to have lower levels of emotional distress after natural disasters. The maturation hypothesis suggests that older adults are less reactive to stress events, whereas the inoculation hypothesis argues that prior experience with disaster is protective. One hundred and sixty-six adults aged 30 to 102 were interviewed regarding the 1994 Northridge earthquake. Longitudinal data were available on depressed mood before and after the earthquake. The maturation hypothesis was generally not supported. The young-old were least depressed; however, this age difference was present prior to the earthquake. The old-old showed lowest levels of earthquake-specific rumination, but age did not buffer the relationship between damage exposure and rumination. The inoculation hypothesis was supported for depressed mood. Prior earthquake experience was related to lower postearthquake depression scores.
