Effects of empagliflozin on progression of chronic kidney disease: a prespecified secondary analysis from the empa-kidney trial

BACKGROUND

Sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors reduce progression of chronic kidney disease and the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in a wide range of patients. However, their effects on kidney disease progression in some patients with chronic kidney disease are unclear because few clinical kidney outcomes occurred among such patients in the completed trials. In particular, some guidelines stratify their level of recommendation about who should be treated with SGLT2 inhibitors based on diabetes status and albuminuria. We aimed to assess the effects of empagliflozin on progression of chronic kidney disease both overall and among specific types of participants in the EMPA-KIDNEY trial.

METHODS

EMPA-KIDNEY, a randomised, controlled, phase 3 trial, was conducted at 241 centres in eight countries (Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, the UK, and the USA), and included individuals aged 18 years or older with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of 20 to less than 45 mL/min per 1·73 m2, or with an eGFR of 45 to less than 90 mL/min per 1·73 m2 with a urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (uACR) of 200 mg/g or higher. We explored the effects of 10 mg oral empagliflozin once daily versus placebo on the annualised rate of change in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR slope), a tertiary outcome. We studied the acute slope (from randomisation to 2 months) and chronic slope (from 2 months onwards) separately, using shared parameter models to estimate the latter. Analyses were done in all randomly assigned participants by intention to treat. EMPA-KIDNEY is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03594110.

FINDINGS

Between May 15, 2019, and April 16, 2021, 6609 participants were randomly assigned and then followed up for a median of 2·0 years (IQR 1·5-2·4). Prespecified subgroups of eGFR included 2282 (34·5%) participants with an eGFR of less than 30 mL/min per 1·73 m2, 2928 (44·3%) with an eGFR of 30 to less than 45 mL/min per 1·73 m2, and 1399 (21·2%) with an eGFR 45 mL/min per 1·73 m2 or higher. Prespecified subgroups of uACR included 1328 (20·1%) with a uACR of less than 30 mg/g, 1864 (28·2%) with a uACR of 30 to 300 mg/g, and 3417 (51·7%) with a uACR of more than 300 mg/g. Overall, allocation to empagliflozin caused an acute 2·12 mL/min per 1·73 m2 (95% CI 1·83-2·41) reduction in eGFR, equivalent to a 6% (5-6) dip in the first 2 months. After this, it halved the chronic slope from -2·75 to -1·37 mL/min per 1·73 m2 per year (relative difference 50%, 95% CI 42-58). The absolute and relative benefits of empagliflozin on the magnitude of the chronic slope varied significantly depending on diabetes status and baseline levels of eGFR and uACR. In particular, the absolute difference in chronic slopes was lower in patients with lower baseline uACR, but because this group progressed more slowly than those with higher uACR, this translated to a larger relative difference in chronic slopes in this group (86% [36-136] reduction in the chronic slope among those with baseline uACR <30 mg/g compared with a 29% [19-38] reduction for those with baseline uACR ≥2000 mg/g; ptrend<0·0001).

INTERPRETATION

Empagliflozin slowed the rate of progression of chronic kidney disease among all types of participant in the EMPA-KIDNEY trial, including those with little albuminuria. Albuminuria alone should not be used to determine whether to treat with an SGLT2 inhibitor.

Impact of primary kidney disease on the effects of empagliflozin in patients with chronic kidney disease: secondary analyses of the EMPA-KIDNEY trial

BACKGROUND

The EMPA-KIDNEY trial showed that empagliflozin reduced the risk of the primary composite outcome of kidney disease progression or cardiovascular death in patients with chronic kidney disease mainly through slowing progression. We aimed to assess how effects of empagliflozin might differ by primary kidney disease across its broad population.

METHODS

EMPA-KIDNEY, a randomised, controlled, phase 3 trial, was conducted at 241 centres in eight countries (Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, the UK, and the USA). Patients were eligible if their estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was 20 to less than 45 mL/min per 1·73 m2, or 45 to less than 90 mL/min per 1·73 m2 with a urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (uACR) of 200 mg/g or higher at screening. They were randomly assigned (1:1) to 10 mg oral empagliflozin once daily or matching placebo. Effects on kidney disease progression (defined as a sustained ≥40% eGFR decline from randomisation, end-stage kidney disease, a sustained eGFR below 10 mL/min per 1·73 m2, or death from kidney failure) were assessed using prespecified Cox models, and eGFR slope analyses used shared parameter models. Subgroup comparisons were performed by including relevant interaction terms in models. EMPA-KIDNEY is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03594110.

FINDINGS

Between May 15, 2019, and April 16, 2021, 6609 participants were randomly assigned and followed up for a median of 2·0 years (IQR 1·5-2·4). Prespecified subgroupings by primary kidney disease included 2057 (31·1%) participants with diabetic kidney disease, 1669 (25·3%) with glomerular disease, 1445 (21·9%) with hypertensive or renovascular disease, and 1438 (21·8%) with other or unknown causes. Kidney disease progression occurred in 384 (11·6%) of 3304 patients in the empagliflozin group and 504 (15·2%) of 3305 patients in the placebo group (hazard ratio 0·71 [95% CI 0·62-0·81]), with no evidence that the relative effect size varied significantly by primary kidney disease (pheterogeneity=0·62). The between-group difference in chronic eGFR slopes (ie, from 2 months to final follow-up) was 1·37 mL/min per 1·73 m2 per year (95% CI 1·16-1·59), representing a 50% (42-58) reduction in the rate of chronic eGFR decline. This relative effect of empagliflozin on chronic eGFR slope was similar in analyses by different primary kidney diseases, including in explorations by type of glomerular disease and diabetes (p values for heterogeneity all >0·1).

INTERPRETATION

In a broad range of patients with chronic kidney disease at risk of progression, including a wide range of non-diabetic causes of chronic kidney disease, empagliflozin reduced risk of kidney disease progression. Relative effect sizes were broadly similar irrespective of the cause of primary kidney disease, suggesting that SGLT2 inhibitors should be part of a standard of care to minimise risk of kidney failure in chronic kidney disease.

Moiré-Assisted Realization of Octahedral MoTe2 Monolayer

A current key challenge in 2D materials is the realization of emergent quantum phenomena in hetero structures via controlling the moiré potential created by the periodicity mismatch between adjacent layers, as highlighted by the discovery of superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene. Generally, the lattice structure of the original host material remains unchanged even after the moiré superlattice is formed. However, much less attention is paid for the possibility that the moiré potential can also modify the original crystal structure itself. Here, it is demonstrated that octahedral MoTe2 which is unstable in bulk is stabilized in a commensurate MoTe2 /graphene hetero-bilayer due to the moiré potential created between the two layers. It is found that the reconstruction of electronic states via the moiré potential is responsible for this stabilization, as evidenced by the energy-gap opening at the Fermi level observed by angle-resolved photoemission and scanning tunneling spectroscopies. The present results provide a fresh approach to realize novel 2D quantum phases by utilizing the moiré potential.

Antiferromagnetic topological insulator with selectively gapped Dirac cones

Antiferromagnetic (AF) topological materials offer a fertile ground to explore a variety of quantum phenomena such as axion magnetoelectric dynamics and chiral Majorana fermions. To realize such intriguing states, it is essential to establish a direct link between electronic states and topology in the AF phase, whereas this has been challenging because of the lack of a suitable materials platform. Here we report the experimental realization of the AF topological-insulator phase in NdBi. By using micro-focused angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we discovered contrasting surface electronic states for two types of AF domains; the surface having the out-of-plane component in the AF-ordering vector displays Dirac-cone states with a gigantic energy gap, whereas the surface parallel to the AF-ordering vector hosts gapless Dirac states despite the time-reversal-symmetry breaking. The present results establish an essential role of combined symmetry to protect massless Dirac fermions under the presence of AF order and widen opportunities to realize exotic phenomena utilizing AF topological materials.

Direct Imaging of Band Structure for Powdered Rhombohedral Boron Monosulfide by Microfocused ARPES

Boron-based two-dimensional (2D) materials are an excellent platform for nanoelectronics applications. Rhombohedral boron monosulfide (r-BS) is attracting particular attention because of its unique layered crystal structure suitable for exploring various functional properties originating in the 2D nature. However, studies to elucidate its fundamental electronic states have been largely limited because only tiny powdered crystals were available, hindering a precise investigation by spectroscopy such as angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Here we report the direct mapping of the band structure with a tiny (∼20 × 20 μm2) r-BS powder crystal by utilizing microfocused ARPES. We found that r-BS is a p-type semiconductor with a band gap of >0.5 eV characterized by the anisotropic in-plane effective mass. The present results demonstrate the high applicability of micro-ARPES to tiny powder crystals and widen an opportunity to access the yet-unexplored electronic states of various novel materials.

Coexistence of Urbach-Tail-Like Localized States and Metallic Conduction Channels in Nitrogen-Doped 3D Curved Graphene

Nitrogen (N) doping is one of the most effective approaches to tailor the chemical and physical properties of graphene. By the interplay between N dopants and 3D curvature of graphene lattices, N-doped 3D graphene displays superior performance in electrocatalysis and solar-energy harvesting for energy and environmental applications. However, the electrical transport properties and the electronic states, which are the key factors to understand the origins of the N-doping effect in 3D graphene, are still missing. The electronic properties of N-doped 3D graphene are systematically investigated by an electric-double-layer transistor method. It is demonstrated that Urbach-tail-like localized states are located around the neutral point of N-doped 3D graphene with the background metallic transport channels. The dual nature of electronic states, generated by the synergistic effect of N dopants and 3D curvature of graphene, can be the electronic origin of the high electrocatalysis, enhanced molecular adsorption, and light absorption of N-doped 3D graphene.

Selective Fabrication of Bismuthene and α-Bi on Hydrogen-Terminated SiC(0001)

Nanomaterials based on monoatomic bismuth (Bi) are attracting particular attention because they are candidates of two-dimensional (2D) topological insulators and Rashba metals useful for spintronic applications. We report convenient selective fabrication of two different types of ultrathin Bi films, bismuthene and α-Bi on hydrogen-terminated SiC(0001), by combining the molecular-beam-epitaxy (MBE) method and the low-temperature and low-pressure hydrogen chemical etching of SiC. We have succeeded in selectively fabricating these two different Bi phases by simply tuning the substrate temperature during the MBE process. We observed that while bismuthene and α-Bi showed a similar low-energy electron diffraction pattern of the (√3 × √3)R30° periodicity, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy revealed a sizable difference in the band structure; bismuthene shows a massive Dirac cone, a signature of 2D topological insulators, whereas α-Bi exhibits an insulating behavior with a large band gap of more than 1.8 eV. We discuss the underlying mechanism of selective fabrication in terms of hydrogen desorption from the hydrogen-terminated SiC substrate.

Development of a versatile micro-focused angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy system with Kirkpatrick-Baez mirror optics

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy using a micro-focused beam spot [micro-angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES)] is becoming a powerful tool to elucidate key electronic states of exotic quantum materials. We have developed a versatile micro-ARPES system based on the synchrotron radiation beam focused with a Kirkpatrick-Baez mirror optics. The mirrors are monolithically installed on a stage, which is driven with five-axis motion, and are vibrationally separated from the ARPES measurement system. Spatial mapping of the Au photolithography pattern on Si signifies the beam spot size of 10 µm (horizontal) × 12 µm (vertical) at the sample position, which is well suited to resolve the fine structure in local electronic states. Utilization of the micro-beam and the high precision sample motion system enables the accurate spatially resolved band-structure mapping, as demonstrated by the observation of a small band anomaly associated with tiny sample bending near the edge of a cleaved topological insulator single crystal.

Dirac semimetal phase and switching of band inversion in XMg2Bi2 (X = Ba and Sr)

Topological Dirac semimetals (TDSs) offer an excellent opportunity to realize outstanding physical properties distinct from those of topological insulators. Since TDSs verified so far have their own problems such as high reactivity in the atmosphere and difficulty in controlling topological phases via chemical substitution, it is highly desirable to find a new material platform of TDSs. By angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with first-principles band-structure calculations, we show that ternary compound BaMg₂Bi₂ is a TDS with a simple Dirac-band crossing around the Brillouin-zone center protected by the C₃ symmetry of crystal. We also found that isostructural SrMg₂Bi₂ is an ordinary insulator characterized by the absence of band inversion due to the reduction of spin–orbit coupling. Thus, XMg₂Bi₂ (X = Sr, Ba, etc.) serves as a useful platform to study the interplay among crystal symmetry, spin–orbit coupling, and topological phase transition around the TDS phase.

Robust charge-density wave strengthened by electron correlations in monolayer 1T-TaSe2 and 1T-NbSe2

Combination of low-dimensionality and electron correlation is vital for exotic quantum phenomena such as the Mott-insulating phase and high-temperature superconductivity. Transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) 1T-TaS2 has evoked great interest owing to its unique nonmagnetic Mott-insulator nature coupled with a charge-density-wave (CDW). To functionalize such a complex phase, it is essential to enhance the CDW-Mott transition temperature TCDW-Mott, whereas this was difficult for bulk TMDs with TCDW-Mott < 200 K. Here we report a strong-coupling 2D CDW-Mott phase with a transition temperature onset of ~530 K in monolayer 1T-TaSe2. Furthermore, the electron correlation derived lower Hubbard band survives under external perturbations such as carrier doping and photoexcitation, in contrast to the bulk counterpart. The enhanced Mott-Hubbard and CDW gaps for monolayer TaSe2 compared to NbSe2, originating in the lattice distortion assisted by strengthened correlations and disappearance of interlayer hopping, suggest stabilization of a likely nonmagnetic CDW-Mott insulator phase well above the room temperature. The present result lays the foundation for realizing monolayer CDW-Mott insulator based devices operating at room temperature.

Dirac Fermion Kinetics in 3D Curved Graphene

3D integration of graphene has attracted attention for realizing carbon-based electronic devices. While the 3D integration can amplify various excellent properties of graphene, the influence of 3D curved surfaces on the fundamental physical properties of graphene has not been clarified. The electronic properties of 3D nanoporous graphene with a curvature radius down to 25-50 nm are systematically investigated and the ambipolar electronic states of Dirac fermions are essentially preserved in the 3D graphene nanoarchitectures, while the 3D curvature can effectively suppress the slope of the linear density of states of Dirac fermion near the Fermi level are demonstrated. Importantly, the 3D curvature can be utilized to tune the back-scattering-suppressed electrical transport of Dirac fermions and enhance both electron localization and electron-electron interaction. As a result, nanoscale curvature provides a new degree of freedom to manipulate 3D graphene electrical properties, which may pave a new way to design new 3D graphene devices with preserved 2D electronic properties and novel functionalities.

Conversion of a conventional superconductor into a topological superconductor by topological proximity effect

Realization of topological superconductors (TSCs) hosting Majorana fermions is a central challenge in condensed-matter physics. One approach is to use the superconducting proximity effect (SPE) in heterostructures, where a topological insulator contacted with a superconductor hosts an effective p-wave pairing by the penetration of Cooper pairs across the interface. However, this approach suffers a difficulty in accessing the topological interface buried deep beneath the surface. Here, we propose an alternative approach to realize topological superconductivity without SPE. In a Pb(111) thin film grown on TlBiSe₂, we discover that the Dirac-cone state of substrate TlBiSe₂ migrates to the top surface of Pb film and obtains an energy gap below the superconducting transition temperature of Pb. This suggests that a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superconductor is converted into a TSC by the topological proximity effect. Our discovery opens a route to manipulate topological superconducting properties of materials.

Realizing topological superconductivity is essential for applicable fault-tolerant quantum computation. Here, Trang et al. report migration of Dirac-cone from TlBiSe₂ substrate to top surface of superconducting Pb film due to topological proximity effect, suggesting realization of topological superconductivity.

Dichotomy of superconductivity between monolayer FeS and FeSe

The discovery of high-temperature (T c) superconductivity in monolayer FeSe on SrTiO3 raised a fundamental question: Whether high T c is commonly realized in monolayer iron-based superconductors. Tetragonal FeS is a key material to resolve this issue because bulk FeS is a superconductor with T c comparable to that of isostructural FeSe. However, difficulty in synthesizing tetragonal monolayer FeS due to its metastable nature has hindered further investigations. Here we report elucidation of band structure of monolayer FeS on SrTiO3, enabled by a unique combination of in situ topotactic reaction and molecular-beam epitaxy. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on FeS and FeSe revealed marked similarities in the electronic structure, such as heavy electron doping and interfacial electron-phonon coupling, both of which have been regarded as possible sources of high T c in FeSe. However, surprisingly, high-T c superconductivity is absent in monolayer FeS. This is linked to the weak superconducting pairing in electron-doped multilayer FeS in which the interfacial effects are absent. Our results strongly suggest that the cross-interface electron-phonon coupling enhances T c only when it cooperates with the pairing interaction inherent to the superconducting layer. This finding provides a key insight to explore heterointerface high-T c superconductors.

Association of preoperative inflammation-based prognostic score with survival in patients undergoing salvage esophagectomy

Salvage esophagectomy (SALV) is potentially beneficial for patients with residual or relapsed esophageal carcinoma after definitive chemoradiotherapy (dCRT), although preoperatively identifying good candidates for SALV remains difficult. We investigated the prognostic impacts of inflammatory and nutritional status in patients undergoing SALV after dCRT. Forty-seven SALV patients were retrospectively reviewed, of whom 46 (98%) had squamous cell carcinoma and 1 (2%) adenocarcinoma. Possible prognostic factors included patients' demographic data, physical status, blood chemistry profiles, and clinical/pathological tumor features. The Glasgow prognostic score (GPS) was derived from preoperative C-reactive protein (CRP) and albumin values. Thirty (64%), 11 (23%), and 6 (13%) patients were classified into the GPS 0, 1, and 2, respectively, groups. None of the possible prognostic factors showed significant correlations with GPS. Patients with GPS 0 had better outcomes than those with GPS 1 or GPS 2 (Median survivals: 37.8, 15.9, and 5.1 months, respectively, P < 0.001). In the multivariable Cox proportional hazards model, GPS 1 (HR 5.62, 95% CI 1.94-16.4, P = 0.002), GPS 2 (HR 9.10, 95% CI 2.60-31.8, P < 0.001), R1/2 resection (HR 16.3, 95% CI 3.62-86.7, P < 0.001) and incomplete response to dCRT (HR 3.53, 95% CI 1.12-12.5, P = 0.03) were all independent risk factors for a poor outcome. Preoperative GPS is potentially useful for predicting outcomes in esophageal cancer patients undergoing SALV.

Ultrathin Bismuth Film on High-Temperature Cuprate Superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ as a Candidate of a Topological Superconductor

One of the key challenges in condensed-matter physics is to establish a topological superconductor that hosts exotic Majorana fermions. Although various heterostructures consisting of conventional BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) superconductors as well as doped topological insulators were intensively investigated, no conclusive evidence for Majorana fermions has been provided. This is mainly because of their very low superconducting transition temperatures ( T_c) and small superconducting-gap magnitude. Here, we report a possible realization of topological superconductivity at very high temperatures in a hybrid of Bi(110) ultrathin film and copper oxide superconductor Bi₂Sr₂CaCu₂O_8+δ (Bi2212). Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy, we found that three-bilayer-thick Bi(110) on Bi2212 exhibits a proximity-effect-induced s-wave energy gap as large as 7.5 meV which persists up to T_c of Bi2212 (85 K). The small Fermi energy and strong spin-orbit coupling of Bi(110), together with the large pairing gap and high T_c, make this system a prime candidate for exploring stable Majorana fermions at very high temperatures.

Weak localization in bilayer graphene with Li-intercalation/desorption

We performed in-situ electrical transport measurements for bilayer graphene grown on SiC(0 0 0 1) substrate, Li-intercalated bilayer graphene, and after that desorbing Li atoms by heating. Bilayer graphene after desorbing intercalated Li atoms showed a higher resistivity and different behavior in magnetoconductance compared to pristine bilayer graphene. We observed the weak localization of carriers at low temperatures in all the three samples and analyzed the experimental results with the extended Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka equation to investigate the transport properties. The result shows that the magnetoconductance of pristine bilayer graphene is described by the AB stacking structure model and the phase breaking scattering is dominated by the electron-electron scattering. The intra-valley scattering occurs most frequently probably due to dopants in SiC substrate. However, in Li-desorbed graphene, the magnetoconductance can be described by neither AB nor AA-stacking model, suggesting the coexistence of domains with several different stacking structures.

Ultrathin Bismuth Film on 1T-TaS2: Structural Transition and Charge-Density-Wave Proximity Effect

We have fabricated bismuth (Bi) ultrathin films on a charge-density-wave (CDW) compound 1T-TaS₂ and elucidated electronic states by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles band-structure calculations. We found that the Bi film on 1T-TaS₂ undergoes a structural transition from (111) to (110) upon reducing the film thickness, accompanied by a drastic change in the energy band structure. We also revealed that while two-bilayer-thick Bi(110) film on Si(111) is characterized by a dispersive band touching the Fermi level ( E_F), the energy band of the same film on 1T-TaS₂ exhibits holelike dispersion with a finite energy gap at E_F. We discuss the origin of such intriguing differences in terms of the CDW proximity effect.

Three-dimensional porous graphene networks expand graphene-based electronic device applications

In recent years, there has been increasing demand for 3D porous graphene structures with excellent 2D characteristics and great potential. As one avenue, several approaches for fabricating 3D porous graphene network structures have been proposed to realize multi-functional graphene materials with 2D graphene structures. Herein, we overview characteristics of 3D porous graphene for applications in future electronic devices along with physical insights into "2D to 3D graphene", in which the characters of 2D graphene such as massless Dirac fermions are well preserved. The present review thus summarizes recent 3D porous graphene studies with a perspective for providing new and board applications of graphene in electronic devices.

Electric Properties of Dirac Fermions Captured into 3D Nanoporous Graphene Networks

Nanoporous graphene- based electric-double-layer transistors (EDLTs) are successfully fabricated. Transport measurements of the EDLTs demonstrate that the ambipolar electronic states of massless Dirac fermions with a high carrier mobility are well preserved in 3D nanoporous graphene along with anomalous nonlinear Hall resistance and exceptional transistor on/off ratio. This study may open a new avenue for device applications of graphene.

Enhancement of electron-phonon coupling in Cs-overlayered intercalated bilayer graphene

We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on cesium (Cs) intercalated bilayer graphene with a Cs overlayer (Cs-C8CsC8). Low-energy electron diffraction shows a (2  ×  2) pattern consistent with intercalation of a Cs layer similar to bulk C8Cs, in addition to the signature of a nearly commensurate superstructure created by the Cs overlayer. ARPES results reveal folding of the π bands due to the periodic (2  ×  2) potential of the intercalated Cs atoms, together with a free-electron-like state at the [Formula: see text] point. Significant mass renormalization is observed in the band dispersion near the Fermi level, indicative of strong electron-phonon coupling. Based on analysis of the self-energy, we find anisotropic electron-phonon coupling with an estimated strength of [Formula: see text]  ±  0.02 in the K-[Formula: see text] direction, and [Formula: see text] in the K-M direction. This coupling is much larger than that of other doped graphenes, and comparable to superconducting bulk GICs. We attribute this large electron-phonon coupling constant to the presence of the Cs overlayer, which highly dopes [Formula: see text] bands, and creates a structure similar to stage-I graphite intercalation compounds.

Superconducting Calcium-Intercalated Bilayer Graphene

We report the direct evidence for superconductivity in Ca-intercalated bilayer graphene C6CaC6, which is regarded as the thinnest limit of Ca-intercalated graphite. We performed the electrical transport measurements with the in situ 4-point-probe method in ultrahigh vacuum under zero- or nonzero-magnetic field for pristine bilayer graphene, Li-intercalated bilayer graphene (C6LiC6) and C6CaC6 fabricated on SiC substrate. We observed that the zero-resistance state occurs in C6CaC6 with the onset temperature (T(c)(onset)) of 4 K, while the T(c)(onset) is gradually decreased upon applying the magnetic field. This directly proves the superconductivity origin of the zero resistance in C6CaC6. On the other hand, both pristine bilayer graphene and C6LiC6 exhibit nonsuperconducting behavior, suggesting the importance of intercalated atoms and its species to drive the superconductivity.

Unconventional Charge-Density-Wave Transition in Monolayer 1T-TiSe2

Reducing the dimension in materials sometimes leads to unexpected discovery of exotic and/or pronounced physical properties such as quantum Hall effect in graphene and high-temperature superconductivity in iron-chalcogenide atomically thin films. Transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) provide a fertile ground for studying the interplay between dimensionality and electronic properties, since they exhibit a variety of electronic phases like semiconducting, superconducting, and charge-density-wave (CDW) states. Among TMDs, bulk 1T-TiSe2 has been a target of intensive studies due to its unusual CDW properties with the periodic lattice distortions characterized by the three-dimensional (3D) commensurate wave vector. Clarifying the ground states of its two-dimensional (2D) counterpart is of great importance not only to pin down the origin of CDW, but also to find unconventional physical properties characteristic of atomic-layer materials. Here, we show the first experimental evidence for the realization of 2D CDW phase without Fermi-surface nesting in monolayer 1T-TiSe2. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) signifies an electron pocket at the Brillouin-zone corner above the CDW-transition temperature (TCDW ∼ 200 K), while, below TCDW, an additional electron pocket and replica bands appear at the Brillouin-zone center and corner, respectively, due to the back-folding of bands by the 2 × 2 superstructure potential. Similarity in the spectral signatures to bulk 1T-TiSe2 implies a common driving force of CDW, i.e., exciton condensation, whereas the larger energy gap below TCDW in monolayer 1T-TiSe2 suggests enhancement of electron-hole coupling upon reducing dimensionality. The present result lays the foundation for the electronic-structure engineering based with atomic-layer TMDs.

Switching of Dirac-Fermion Mass at the Interface of Ultrathin Ferromagnet and Rashba Metal

We have performed spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on tungsten (110) interfaced with an ultrathin iron (Fe) layer to study an influence of ferromagnetism on the Dirac-cone-like surface-interface states. We found an unexpectedly large energy gap of 340 meV at the Dirac point, and have succeeded in switching the Dirac-fermion mass by controlling the direction of Fe spins (in plane or out of plane) through tuning the thickness of the Fe overlayer or adsorbing oxygen on it. Such a manipulation of Dirac-fermion mass via the magnetic proximity effect opens a promising platform for realizing new spintronic devices utilizing a combination of exchange and Rashba-spin-orbit interactions.

Effect of electrical stimulation-induced muscle force and streptomycin treatment on muscle and trabecular bone mass in early-stage disuse musculoskeletal atrophy

OBJECTIVES

The aim was to determine whether daily muscle electrical stimulation (ES) and streptomycin treatment would have positive or negative effects on trabecular bone mass in disuse rats.

METHODS

Seven-week-old male F344 rats were randomly divided into five groups of eight animals each: an age-matched control group (CON); a sciatic denervation group (DN); a DN + direct electrical stimulation group (DN+ES); a DN + streptomycin treatment group (DN+SM); and a DN+ES+SM group. The tibialis anterior (TA) muscles in all ES groups were stimulated with 16mA at 10Hz for 30 min/day, six days/week, for one week. Bone volume and structure were evaluated using micro-CT, and histological examinations of the tibiae were performed.

RESULTS

Direct ES significantly reduced the disuse-induced trabecular bone loss. Osteoid thickness were also significantly greater in the ES groups than in the DN group. Micro CT and histomorphological parameters were significantly lower in the DN+ES+SM group than in the DN+ES group, while there were no significant differences between the DN and DN+SM groups.

CONCLUSIONS

These results suggest that ES-induced muscle force reduced trabecular bone loss, and streptomycin treatment did not induce bone loss, but attenuated the effects of ES-induced muscle force on reducing the loss of disused bone.

High-temperature superconductivity in potassium-coated multilayer FeSe thin films

The recent discovery of possible high-temperature (T(c)) superconductivity over 65 K in a monolayer FeSe film on SrTiO3 (refs 1-6) triggered a fierce debate on how superconductivity evolves from bulk to film, because bulk FeSe crystal exhibits a T(c) of no higher than 10 K (ref. 7). However, the difficulty in controlling the carrier density and the number of FeSe layers has hindered elucidation of this problem. Here, we demonstrate that deposition of potassium onto FeSe films markedly expands the accessible doping range towards the heavily electron-doped region. Intriguingly, we have succeeded in converting non-superconducting films with various thicknesses into superconductors with T(c) as high as 48 K. We also found a marked increase in the magnitude of the superconducting gap on decreasing the FeSe film thickness, indicating that the interface plays a crucial role in realizing the high-temperature superconductivity. The results presented provide a new strategy to enhance and optimize T(c) in ultrathin films of iron-based superconductors.

Charge-density wave in Ca-intercalated bilayer graphene induced by commensurate lattice matching

We report the emergence of a charge-density wave (CDW) in Ca-intercalated bilayer graphene (C_{6}CaC_{6}), the thinnest limit of superconducting C_{6}Ca, observed by low-temperature, high-magnetic-field scanning tunneling microscopy or spectroscopy, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. While the possible superconductivity was not observed in epitaxially grown C_{6}CaC_{6} on a SiC substrate, a CDW order different from that observed on the surface of bulk C_{6}Ca was observed. It is inferred that the CDW state is induced by the potential modulation due to the commensurate lattice matching between the C_{6}CaC_{6} film and the SiC substrate.

Direct observation of Dirac cone in multilayer silicene intercalation compound CaSi2

Calcium-intercalated multilayer silicene CaSi2 exhibits a massless Dirac-cone π-electron-band dispersion like graphene, while the Dirac point is about 2 eV away from the Fermi level due to diiimide-based charge transfer from the Ca atoms to the silicene layers. This indicates that the graphene-like electronic structure with a massless Dirac cone is stably formed in the metal-intercalated multilayer silicene.

First Report of Pythium Root and Stalk Rot of Forage Corn Caused by Pythium arrhenomanes in Japan

Corn (Zea mays L.) is the most important forage crop in Japan. It was cultivated on 92,000 ha in 2011 and was mainly used as whole crop silage for cattle feed. In September 2009, a root and stalk rot disease was detected on corn plants cultivated in Tochigi, located in the central region of Japan. The symptoms of the disease included wilting of whole plants after the R5 (dent) stage (2) with drooping ears. Roots turned black and their number decreased. Further, the stalks became hollow and soft and harbored white hyphae. This tissue deterioration made machine harvest difficult. We obtained seven isolates of a Pythium-like organism by single hypha isolation from surface-sterilized pieces of diseased roots and stems on water agar and deposited one of the isolates at the NIAS genebank, Japan, under the accession no. MAFF511547. The isolate was grown in the dark on V8 juice agar medium for 10 days to produce oogonia. The oogonia were globose, light brown to yellow, smooth, 23.9 to 30.5 μm in size, and had 1 to 8 antheridia. Oospores were mostly plerotic, and oogonia walls were 1.3 to 2.7 μm thick. The morphology of the isolates was similar to that of Pythium arrhenomanes Drechsler and consistent with the species description (3). We analyzed the rDNA-ITS region sequences of the isolate as described by Kageyama et al. (1). The sequence (GenBank Accession No. AB903904) showed 99.1% (783/790 bp) similarity with that of P. arrhenomanes (AY598628). On the basis of morphological and rDNA sequence similarities, we identified the isolates obtained from corn as P. arrhenomanes. The pathogenicity of the isolate was confirmed by planting corn seedlings of the commercial Pioneer Brand hybrid 36B08 immediately after germination in five replicate pots containing soil mixed with 5% boiled barley grain by weight, incubated with or without the isolate for 7 days. After 10 days of incubation in a greenhouse at 20 to 25°C, only the inoculated plants exhibited symptoms of root and stalk rot. Since the inoculated organism was readily re-isolated from the diseased stems and roots, the pathogenicity of the isolate was confirmed. For field observation, the same hybrid of forage corn was sown in the fields in Nasushiobara, Tochigi, on 16 May 2011. The hybrid was sown in a row of 2 m, with 20 seeds planted at a distance of 10 cm with two replicates. For inoculum, the isolate was cultured on 5-cm-long wooden toothpicks, previously soaked in potato dextrose broth and placed on a V8 agar plate for 7 days at 25°C in the dark until covered by hyphae. The toothpicks were pierced into wounds made on the stems of corn plants, approximately 10 cm above the ground, using a thin iron needle. The wounds were about 2 mm in diameter and 2 cm deep. Field inoculation was conducted in late July at the R1 (silking) growth stage. Disease symptoms were observed in mid-September at R5, and only those plants that were inoculated with the toothpicks harboring the hyphae exhibited the typical stem rot symptoms. Electrical stimulation of denervated rat skeletal muscle retards trabecular bone loss in early stages of disuse musculoskeletal atrophy

OBJECTIVES

We aimed to determine the intensity of muscle stimulation required to prevent structural failure as well as bone and skeletal muscle loss after denervation-induced disuse.

METHODS

Seven-week-old rats (weight, 198-225 g) were randomly assigned to age-matched groups comprising control (CON), sciatic nerve denervation (DN) or direct electrical stimulation (ES) one day later [after denervation] with 4, 8 and 16 mA at 10 Hz for 30 min/day, six days/week, for one or three weeks. Bone architecture and mean osteoid thickness in histologically stained tibial sections and tension in tibialis anterior muscles were assessed at one and three weeks after denervation.

RESULTS

Direct ES with 16 mA generated 23-30% maximal contraction force. Denervation significantly decreased trabecular bone volume fraction, thickness and number, connectivity density and increased trabecular separation in the DN group at weeks one and three. Osteoid thickness was significantly greater in the ES16 group at week one than in the DN and other ES groups. Trabecular bone volume significantly correlated with muscle weight.

CONCLUSIONS

Relatively low-level muscle contraction induced by low-frequency, high-intensity electrical muscle stimulation delayed trabecular bone loss during the early stages (one week after DN) of musculoskeletal atrophy due to disuse.

Screening of As-accumulating plants using a foliar application and a native accumulation of As

The discovery of novel accumulating plants is useful for efficient phytoremediation due to the demands of various conditions of impacted sites such as land use, soil properties, concentration of pollutants, and climate. In the present study, we investigated foliar application or a field with highly bioavailable arsenic (As) to screen As-accumulating plants. Plants grown in the downstream of a hot springs area were analyzed for native As accumulation and As foliar application, and the rhizosphere soils were collected. The water-soluble As in the rhizosphere soils had a high average, 144 microg/kg, whereas total As was similar to normal soil in Japan. Among 34 herbaceous plants and 17 woody plants, Chelidonium majus var. asiaticum accumulated a relatively high As level, 8.07 mg/kg DW (93.6% of As added), that was not revealed by native accumulation. In a further pot experiment, C. majus accumulated a moderately high As level (314 mg/kg DW) in the roots but not in the shoot (30.1 mg/kg DW), and exhibited a low transfer factor (TF = 0.096). Thus, a foliar application would be a simple and high-throughput method to screen plants that accumulate and tolerate As. C. majus would be useful as a tool for phytostabilization of As.
