Association of gustatory dysfunction and Alzheimer

BACKGROUND

Chemosensory dysfunction has been reported to be involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Compared with olfaction, gustatory dysfunction in AD has not been evaluated in depth. We reviewed previously published studies regarding gustatory dysfunction in patients with AD compared with healthy controls.

METHODS

A systematic review was conducted by searching the MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Embase, and PubMed databases covering publications from January 2000 to February 2023. The search was performed using the keyword "Alzheimer* AND (gustatory OR taste OR gustation)." Only studies that performed gustatory function testing and compared the results between patients with AD and healthy controls were included. A random-effects meta-analysis was performed.

RESULTS

Twelve articles were finally included, and various gustatory tests including taste strips, the taste disk test, taste solutions, and subjective questionnaires were applied. Overall gustatory function based on the taste strip test was significantly decreased in patients with AD compared with controls in two out of three papers. The overall gustatory function of patients with AD was significantly decreased in all studies based on the taste disk and taste solution tests. We also found that the sweet taste test showed low heterogeneity across all the included studies, and there was low publication bias. In studies using subjective questionnaires, gustatory function was not significantly different between patients with AD and healthy controls in the meta-analysis.

CONCLUSIONS

Based on these studies, gustatory dysfunction diagnosed by gustatory function testing was closely related to AD. However, the results of subjective questionnaires were not significantly different between patients with AD and healthy controls in the current meta-analysis. As the number of studies and enrolled subjects was limited and unified gustatory function testing was lacking, further studies are needed to confirm this relationship.

Korean version of the MNREAD acuity chart

To investigate the efficacy of the Korean version of the Minnesota low vision reading chart. A Korean version consisting of 38 items was prepared based on the MNREAD acuity chart developed by the University of Minnesota. A linguist composed the representative sentences, each containing nine words from second and third grade levels of elementary school. Reading ability was measured for 20-35-year-old subjects with normal visual acuity (corrected visual acuity of logMAR 0.0 or better). The maximum reading speed (words per minute [wpm]) for healthy participants, reading acuity (smallest detectable font size), and critical print size (smallest font size without reduction of reading speed) were analyzed. The average age of the subjects was 28.3 ± 2.6 years (male:female ratio, 4:16). The average reading time for 38 sentences was 3.66 ± 0.69 s, with no differences in the average maximum reading speed between sentences (p = 0.836). The maximum reading speed was 174.2 ± 29.3 and 175.4 ± 27.8 in the right and left eye, respectively. Reading acuity was measured as logMAR 0.0 or better in 80% of the cases. All subjects showed a critical print size of 0.2 logMAR or better. The overall reading ability can be measured using the Korean version of the MNREAD acuity chart, thereby making it useful in measuring the reading ability of those with Korean as their native language.

Tailored Synthesis of Heterogenous 2D TMDs and Their Spectroscopic Characterization

Two-dimensional (2D) vertical van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) show great potential across various applications. However, synthesizing large-scale structures poses challenges owing to the intricate growth parameters, forming unexpected hybrid film structures. Thus, precision in synthesis and thorough structural analysis are essential aspects. In this study, we successfully synthesized large-scale structured 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) via chemical vapor deposition using metal oxide (WO3 and MoO3) thin films and a diluted H2S precursor, individual MoS2, WS2 films and various MoS2/WS2 hybrid films (Type I: MoxW1-xS2 alloy; Type II: MoS2/WS2 vdWH; Type III: MoS2 dots/WS2). Structural analyses, including optical microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and cross-sectional imaging revealed that the A1g and E2g modes of WS2 and MoS2 were sensitive to structural variations, enabling hybrid structure differentiation. Type II showed minimal changes in the MoS2's A1g mode, while Types I and III exhibited a ~2.8 cm-1 blue shift. Furthermore, the A1g mode of WS2 in Type I displayed a 1.4 cm-1 red shift. These variations agreed with the TEM-observed microstructural features, demonstrating strain effects on the MoS2-WS2 interfaces. Our study provides insights into the structural features of diverse hybrid TMD materials, facilitating their differentiation through Raman spectroscopy.

Treatment Outcomes of Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy for Pulmonary Metastasis from Sarcoma: A Multicenter, Retrospective Study

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

The aim of this study was to evaluate the treatment outcomes and potential dose-response relationship of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for pulmonary metastasis of sarcoma.

MATERIALS/METHODS

A retrospective review of 39 patients and 71 lesions treated with SBRT from two institutions was performed. The patients had oligometastatic or oligoprogressive disease, or were receiving palliation. Doses of 20-60 Gy were delivered in 1-5 fractions. The local control per tumor (LCpT) was evaluated according to the biologically effective dose with an α/β ratio of 10 (BED10) of the prescribed dose (BED10 ≥ 100 Gy vs. BED10 < 100 Gy). Clinical outcomes per patient, including local control per patient (LCpP), pulmonary progression-free rate (PPFR), any progression-free rate (APFR), and overall survival (OS) were investigated.

RESULTS

The median follow-up period was 27.2 months. The 1-, 2-, and 3-year LCpT rates for the entire cohort were 100.0%, 88.3%, and 73.6%, respectively. There was no observed difference in LCpT between the two BED10 groups (p = 0.180). The 3-year LCpP, PPFR, APFR, and OS rates were 78.1%, 22.7%, 12.9%, and 83.7%, respectively. Five (12.8%) patients with oligometastasis had long-term disease-free intervals, with a median survival period of 40.7 months. Factors that were associated with a worse prognosis were oligoprogression (vs. oligometastasis), multiple pulmonary metastases, and simultaneous extrathoracic metastasis.

CONCLUSION

SBRT for pulmonary metastasis of sarcoma is effective. Some selected patients may achieve durable response. Considerations of SBRT indication and disease extent may be needed as they may influence the prognosis.

Efficacy and Safety of Image-Guided Hypofractionated Radiotherapy for Hepatocellular Carcinoma with Portal Vein Tumor Thrombosis

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of image-guided 10-fraction hypofractionated radiotherapy (RT) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients with portal vein tumor thrombosis (PVTT).

MATERIALS/METHODS

Between 2016 and March 2022, 69 HCC with PVTT patients received RT (40-50Gy/10fx) in our institutions. The median prescribed dose of 50 Gy (range, 40-50 Gy, BED10; 56-75 Gy10) was delivered in 10 fractions in all patients. Follow-up imaging was performed at three-month intervals after the completion of RT. The extent of PVTT was described according to the Liver Cancer Study Group of Japan classification: Vp0 = no PVTT, Vp1 = segmental portal vein branch, Vp2 = right/left anterior/posterior portal vein, Vp3 = right/left portal vein and Vp4 = main portal vein. Response evaluation was performed using response evaluation criteria in solid tumors, version 1.1. Freedom from local progression (FFLP), progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) were calculated from the start date of RT.

RESULTS

In this cohort, 4.3% of patients had Vp1 PVTT, 20.3% had Vp2, 37.7% had Vp3, and 37.7% had Vp4. The median PTV volume was 105.3 cc (interquartile range [IQR], 74.1-179.4 cc). Fifty-two (75.4%) patients received 50 Gy in 10 fractions. With a median follow-up of 10.2 months (IQR, 6-21 months), the median OS was 18.5 months, and 1-year FFLP, PFS, and OS rates were 84.8%, 26.9%, and 62.2% respectively. At 3 months after RT, 13.0% had a complete response, 36.2% had a partial response, 46.4% had a stable disease and 4.4% had a progressive disease. In the multivariate analysis, AFP ≥ 600 IU/ml (HR 2.06, p = 0.03), Child-Pugh Class B or C (HR 2.30, p = 0.02), and modified Union for International Cancer Control (mUICC) stage IVA or IVB (4.05, p = 0.02) were significantly related to OS. During the follow-up period, there were 2 (2.8%) cases of grade ≥3 toxicity: grade 3 AST/ALT elevation (n = 1), and acute cholangitis (n = 1).

CONCLUSION

Hypofractionated RT demonstrated promising local PVTT control with acceptable toxicity. These data suggest that 10-fraction image-guided hypofractionated RT (BED10 = 56-75 Gy10) is a feasible treatment option for PVTT in HCC patients.

One-Step Passivation of Both Sulfur Vacancies and SiO2 Interface Traps of MoS2 Device

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) benefit electrical devices with spin-orbit coupling and valley- and topology-related properties. However, TMD-based devices suffer from traps arising from defect sites inside the channel and the gate oxide interface. Deactivating them requires independent treatments, because the origins are dissimilar. This study introduces a single treatment to passivate defects in a multilayer MoS2 FET. By applying back-gate bias, protons from an H-TFSI droplet are injected into the MoS2, penetrating deeply enough to reach the SiO2 gate oxide. The characterizations employing low-temperature transport and deep-level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) studies reveal that the trap density of S vacancies in MoS2 drops to the lowest detection level. The temperature-dependent mobility plot on the SiO2 substrate resembles that of the h-BN substrate, implying that dangling bonds in SiO2 are passivated. The carrier mobility on the SiO2 substrate is enhanced by approximately 2200% after the injection.

Hybrid 1D/2D nanocarbon-based conducting polymer nanocomposites for high-performance wearable electrodes

A low interfacial contact resistance is a challenge in polymer nanocomposites based on conductive nanomaterials for high-performance wearable electrode applications. Herein, a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based flexible nanocomposite incorporating high-conductivity 1D single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and 2D reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) was developed for high-performance electrocardiogram (ECG) wearable electrodes. A PDMS-SWCNT (P-SW; type I) nanocomposite containing only SWCNTs (2 wt%), exhibited rough and non-uniform surface morphology owing to the strong bundling effect of as-grown SWCNTs and randomly entangled aggregate structures and because of inefficient vacuum degassing (i.e., R _P-SW = 1871 Ω). In contrast, owing to the hybrid structure of the SWCNTs (1 wt%) and r-GO (1 wt%), the PDMS-SWCNTs/r-GO (P-SW/r-GO; type II) nanocomposite exhibited uniform surface characteristics and low contact resistance (i.e., R _P-SW/r-GO = 63 Ω) through the formation of hybrid and long conducting pathways. The optimized nanocomposite (P-SW/r-GO/f; type III) possessed a fabric-assisted structure that enabled tunable and efficient vacuum degassing and curing conditions. Additionally, a long and wide conducting pathway was formed through more uniform and dense interconnected structures, and the contact resistance was drastically reduced (i.e., R _P-SW/r-GO/f = 15 Ω). The performance of the electrodes fabricated using the optimized nanocomposites was the same or higher than that of commercial Ag/AgCl gel electrodes during real-time measurement for ECG Bluetooth monitoring. The developed high-performance hybrid conducting polymer electrodes are expected to contribute significantly to the expansion of the application scope of wearable electronic devices and wireless personal health monitoring systems.

Suicide attempts presenting to the emergency department before and during the COVID-19 pandemic: a comparative study

Objective

To compare and analyze the differences in the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of suicide attempters who visited an emergency department (ED) before and during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

Methods

This single center, retrospective study was conducted by reviewing the medical records of patients in the “self-injury/suicide” category of the National Emergency Department Information System who visited an ED between January 2019 and December 2020. We obtained information on baseline characteristics, suicide attempt, and disposition. Data were analyzed using the chi-squared test.

Results

A total of 456 patients were included. The number of patients visiting the ED for suicide attempts increased by 18.2% (from 209 to 247 cases) during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the ratio of suicide attempters to the total number of ED visits increased by 48.8% (from 0.43% to 0.64%, P<0.001). There were significant differences in methods of suicide attempt, endotracheal intubation, ED disposition, and the presence of mental illness. Drug overdose (42.1% vs. 53.4%) and gas inhalation (5.7% vs. 8.5%) increased, and hanging decreased (6.0% vs. 2.0%) during the pandemic. Endotracheal intubation (13.9% vs. 5.7%) and intensive care unit admission (29.7% vs. 14.6%) decreased. More patients with the history of mental illness visited during the pandemic (54.0% vs. 70.1%).

Conclusion

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, suicide attempts have increased in this single ED although the lethality of those attempts is low.

Anti-diabetic effects of Protaetia brevitarsis in pancreatic islets and a murine diabetic model

OBJECTIVE

In this study, the antidiabetic efficacy of Protaetia brevitarsis in alloxan-treated pancreatic islets and db/db mice was investigated. P. brevitarsis was tested for alloxan-mediated cytotoxicity and nitric oxide production in mice pancreatic islets.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The anti-diabetic effect of P. brevitarsis was also evaluated in db/db mice after 4 weeks of administration. Biochemical analysis, oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), and pancreatic histological analysis were performed.

RESULTS

P. brevitarsis displayed hypoglycemic activity in alloxan-treated mice pancreatic islets. Our results showed that P. brevitarsis protects pancreatic islets from cytotoxicity. Moreover, daily oral supplementation with P. brevitarsis for 4 weeks reduced plasma glucose levels without affecting body weight and food intake, elevated glucose tolerance in OGTT, improved blood lipid parameters, inhibited fat accumulation, and restored islet structure of db/db mice.

CONCLUSIONS

The present study provided evidence for the anti‑diabetic effect of P. brevitarsis in alloxan-treated pancreatic islets and db/db mice. These results suggest that P. brevitarsis may be used as an adjunctive anti-diabetic agent or as a functional food.

Identification of genomic loci conferring broad-spectrum resistance to multiple nematode species in exotic soybean accession PI 567305

KEY MESSAGE

Genetic analysis identified a unique combination of major QTL for resistance to important soybean nematodes concurrently present in a single soybean accession, which has not been reported earlier. An exotic soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] accession, PI 567305, was reported to be highly resistant to three important nematode species, soybean cyst (SCN), root-knot (RKN), and reniform (RN) nematodes. However, genetic basis controlling broad-spectrum resistance in this germplasm has not been investigated. We report results of genetic analysis to identify genomic loci conferring resistance to these nematode species. A bi-parental population consisting of 242 F8-derived recombinant inbred lines (RILs) was developed from a cross of a nematode susceptible cultivar, Magellan, and resistant accession, PI 567305. The RILs were phenotyped for nematode resistance to three SCN HG types. They were genotyped using the Infinium SoySNP6K BeadChips and genotype-by-sequencing (GBS) methods in an attempt to evaluate the cost-effectiveness and efficiency of these two genotyping platforms. Genetic analysis confirmed the major QTL on chromosomes (Chrs) 10 and 18 with broad-spectrum resistance to the three nematodes present in this germplasm. Haplotype and copy number variation analyses of SCN resistance QTL indicated that PI 567305 has a different haplotype, which is associated with likely a unique SCN resistance mechanism different from Peking- or PI 88788-type resistance. The evaluations of both Infinium Beadchip- and GBS-based genotyping technologies provided comprehensive insights for researchers to choose a cost-effective and efficient platform for QTL mapping and for other genomic studies in soybeans.

Extrinsic Surface Magnetic Anisotropy Contribution in Pt/Y3Fe5O12 Interface in Longitudinal Spin Seebeck Effect by Graphene Interlayer

A recent study found that magnetization curves for Y₃Fe₅O₁₂ (YIG) slab and thick films (>20 μm thick) differed from bulk system curves by their longitudinal spin Seebeck effect in a Pt/YIG bilayer system. The deviation was due to intrinsic YIG surface magnetic anisotropy, which is difficult to adopt extrinsic surface magnetic anisotropy even when in contact with other materials on the YIG surface. This study experimentally demonstrates evidence for extrinsic YIG surface magnetic anisotropy when in contact with a diamagnetic graphene interlayer by observing the spin Seebeck effect, directly proving intrinsic YIG surface magnetic anisotropy interruption. We show the Pt/YIG bilayer system graphene interlayer role using large area single and multilayered graphenes using the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect at room temperature, and address the presence of surface magnetic anisotropy due to magnetic proximity between graphene and YIG layer. These findings suggest a promising route to understand new physics of spin Seebeck effect in spin transport.

Direct Pattern Growth of Carbon Nanomaterials by Laser Scribing on Spin-Coated Cu-PI Composite Films and Their Gas Sensor Application

The excellent physical and chemical properties of carbon nanomaterials render them suitable for application in gas sensors. However, the synthesis of carbon nanomaterials using high-temperature furnaces is time consuming and expensive. In this study, we synthesize a carbon nanomaterial using local laser-scribing on a substrate coated with a Cu-embedded polyimide (PI) thin film to reduce the processing time and cost. Spin coating using a Cu-embedded PI solution is performed to deposit a Cu-embedded PI thin film (Cu@PI) on a quartz substrate, followed by the application of a pulsed laser for carbonization. In contrast to a pristine PI solution-based PI thin film, the laser absorption of the Cu-embedded PI thin film based on Cu@PI improved. The laser-scribed carbon nanomaterial synthesized using Cu@PI exhibits a three-dimensional structure that facilitates gas molecule absorption, and when it is exposed to NO₂ and NH₃, its electrical resistance changes by −0.79% and +0.33%, respectively.

Water Adsorption Behavior on a Highly Dense Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Film with an Enhanced Interstitial Space

In this study, we describe the adsorption behavior of water (H₂O) in the interstitial space of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). A highly dense SWCNT (HD-SWCNT) film with a remarkably enhanced interstitial space was fabricated through mild HNO₃/H₂SO₄ treatment. The N₂, CO₂, and H₂ adsorption isotherm results indicated remarkably developed micropore volumes (from 0.10 to 0.40 mL g^-1) and narrower micropore widths (from 1.5 to 0.9 nm) following mild HNO₃/H₂SO₄ treatment, suggesting that the interstitial space was increased from the initial densely-packed network assembly structure of the SWCNTs. The H₂O adsorption isotherm of the HD-SWCNT film at 303 K showed an increase in H₂O adsorption (i.e., by ∼170%), which increased rapidly from the critical value of relative pressure (i.e., 0.3). Despite the remarkably enhanced adsorption capacity of H₂O, the rates of H₂O adsorption and desorption in the interstitial space did not change. This result shows an adsorption behavior different from that of the fast transport of H₂O molecules in the internal space of the SWCNTs. In addition, the adsorption capacities of N₂, CO₂, H₂, and H₂O molecules in the interstitial space of the HD-SWCNT film showed a linear relationship with the kinetic diameter, indicating an adsorption behavior that is highly dependent on the kinetic diameter.

Characteristics of silicon nitride deposited by very high frequency (162 MHz)-plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition using bis(diethylamino)silane

Silicon nitrides, deposited by capacitively coupled plasma (CCP)-type plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD), are generally applied to today's nanoscale semiconductor devices, and are currently being investigated in terms of their potential applications in the context of flexible displays, etc. During the PEALD process, 13.56 MHz rf power is generally employed for the generation of reactive gas plasma. In this study, the effects of a higher plasma generation frequency of 162 MHz on both plasma and silicon nitride film characteristics are investigated for the purpose of silicon nitride PEALD, using bis(diethylamino)silane (BDEAS) as the silicon precursor, and N₂ plasma as the reactant gas. The PEALD silicon nitride film deposited using the 162 MHz CCP exhibited improved film characteristics, such as reduced surface roughness, a lower carbon percentage, a higher N/Si ratio, a lower wet etch rate in a diluted HF solution, lower leakage current, and higher electric breakdown field, and more uniform step coverage of the silicon nitride film deposited in a high aspect ratio trench, as compared to silicon nitride PEALD using 13.56 MHz CCP. These improved PEALD silicon nitride film characteristics are believed to be related to the higher ion density, higher reactive gas dissociation, and lower ion bombardment energy to the substrate observed in N₂ plasma with a 162 MHz CCP.

Risk factors of COVID-19 mortality: a systematic review of current literature and lessons from recent retracted articles

OBJECTIVE

Recently, two influential articles that reported the association of (hydroxy)chloroquine or angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) mortality were retracted due to significant methodological issues. Therefore, we aimed to analyze the same clinical issues through an improved research method and to find out the differences from the retracted papers. We systematically reviewed pre-existing literature, and compared the results with those of the retracted papers to gain a novel insight.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We extracted common risk factors identified in two retracted papers, and conducted relevant publication search until June 26, 2020 in PubMed. Then, we analyzed the risk factors for COVID-19 mortality and compared them to those of the retracted papers.

RESULTS

Our systematic review demonstrated that most demographic and clinical risk factors for COVID-19 mortality were similar to those of the retracted papers. However, while the retracted paper indicated that both (hydroxy)chloroquine monotherapy and combination therapy with macrolide were associated with higher risk of mortality, our study showed that only combination therapy of hydroxychloroquine and macrolide was associated with higher risk of mortality (odds ratio 2.33; 95% confidence interval 1.63-3.34). In addition, our study demonstrated that use of ACE inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) was associated with reduced risk of mortality (0.77; 0.65-0.91).

CONCLUSIONS

When analyzing the same clinical issues with the two retracted papers through a systematic review of randomized controlled trials and relevant cohort studies, we found out that (hydroxy)chloroquine monotherapy was not associated with higher risk of mortality, and that the use of ACE inhibitors or ARBs was associated with reduced risk of mortality in COVID-19 patients.

High-mobility group box 1 protein induces epithelialmesenchymal transition in upper airway epithelial cells

BACKGROUND

In the treatment of rhinosinusitis, nasal polyps are a major problem, and the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) process is considered pivotal in their development. Although various studies have addressed the role of high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) nuclear protein in this setting, its impact on EMT has yet to be evaluated. Our aim was the pathogenic mechanism of HMGB1 in EMT and EMT-induced upper respiratory nasal polyps.

METHODS

We investigated the EMT-related effects of HMGB1 in human nasal epithelial (HNE) cells using western blot analysis, transepithelial-electrical resistance (TEER) testing, wound healing assay, and immunofluorescence. HNE cells were incubated in a low-oxygen environment to evaluate the role of HMGB1 in hypoxia-induced EMT. Further support for our in vitro findings was obtained through murine models. Human nasal polyps and nasal lavage fluid samples were collected for western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

RESULTS

HMGB1 increased mesenchymal markers and decreased epithelial markers in HNE cells. Hypoxia-induced HMGB1 in turn induced EMT, apparently through RAGE signaling. We verified HMGB1-induced EMT in the upper respiratory epithelium of mice by instilling intranasal HMGB1. In testing of human nasal polyps, HMGB1 and mesenchymal markers were heightened, whereas epithelial markers were reduced, compared with tissue controls.

CONCLUSION

HMGB1 secretion in nasal epithelium may be a major pathogenic factor in upper respiratory EMT, contributing to nasal polyps.

Data for direct chemical deposition of PbS on chemical vapor deposition grown-graphene for high performance photovoltaic infrared photo-detectors

Over the past decades, graphene has attracted much attention from the scientific community due to its broad applications in the optoelectronics industries [1]. Owing to graphene's high transmission and high electrical conductivity, diverse functional materials/graphene hybridized heterostructures and interfaces are under extensive investigation to satisfy the increasing interest in the need for bendable, flexible and high performance optoelectronic devices [2]. Due to the good atomic lattice structure of graphene, varying heterostructures have been formed by depositing different functional materials directly on graphene [3], [4], [5]. We fabricated a vertical photovoltaic type G/PbS/Ti device by making use of the Ti/PbS Schottky junction and discussed the photocurrent transient characteristics. Lead sulfide (PbS) was deposited directly on large area CVD (Chemical vapor deposition) graphene by CBD (Chemical bath deposition). Temperature dependent photocurrent spectra of our G/PbS/Ti photovoltaic devices were measured by a Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) set-up. In this paper, we present the experimental procedures and the raw experimental data for the direct chemical deposition of PbS on CVD-graphene for high performance photovoltaic infrared photo-detectors. Effective Heat Transfer Pathways of Thermally Conductive Networks Formed by One-Dimensional Carbon Materials with Different Sizes

We investigated the heat transfer behavior of thermally conductive networks with one-dimensional carbon materials to design effective heat transfer pathways for hybrid filler systems of polymer matrix composites. Nano-sized few-walled carbon nanotubes (FWCNTs) and micro-sized mesophase pitch-based carbon fibers (MPCFs) were used as the thermally conductive materials. The bulk density and thermal conductivity of the FWCNT films increased proportionally with the ultrasonication time due to the enhanced dispersibility of the FWCNTs in an ethanol solvent. The ultrasonication-induced densification of the FWCNT films led to the effective formation of filler-to-filler connections, resulting in improved thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity of the FWCNT-MPCF hybrid films was proportional to the MPCF content (maximum thermal conductivity at an MPCF content of 60 wt %), indicating the synergistic effect on the thermal conductivity enhancement. Moreover, the MPCF-to-MPCF heat transfer pathways in the FWCNT-MPCF hybrid films were the most effective in achieving high thermal conductivity due to the smaller interfacial area and shorter heat transfer pathway of the MPCFs. The FWCNTs could act as thermal bridges between neighboring MPCFs for effective heat transfer. Furthermore, the incorporation of Ag nanoparticles of approximately 300 nm into the FWCNT-MPCF hybrid film dramatically enhanced the thermal conductivity, which was closely related to a decreased thermal interfacial resistance at the intersection points between the materials. Epoxy-based composites loaded with the FWCNTs, MPCFs, FWCNT-MPCF hybrids, and FWCNT-MPCF-Ag hybrid fillers were also fabricated. A similar trend in thermal conductivity was observed in the polymer matrix composite with carbon-based hybrid films.

P5298Influence of the changes in body fat on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in a general population: a report from Ansan-Ansung cohort in the Korean genome environment study

Background

Paradoxical beneficial effects of obesity on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality have been reported in multiple cohort studies based on patients with cardiovascular disease as well as general populations. However, the association between the presence of obesity at baseline and the better survival rates could not be directly interpreted into the beneficial effect of gain in obesity or fatness on the mortality, which makes it difficult to provide any recommendation for the management of obesity. Therefore, we investigated the influence of the changes in body fat on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in a general population.

Methods

A population-based cohort study has been conducted for 12 years (from 2001 to 2012). A total of 5,259 subjects in whom body compositions using a bio-impedance method were measured at least 2 times during the observational period were included. The causes of death was identified from the nation-wide database in KOSTAT. I20-I82 and R99 in the International Classification of Disease-10 codes were defined as a cardiovascular death. The subjects were evenly divided into 3 groups by the percentages of the changes in body fat (Δ%BF; decreased [Δ%BF <0.0%] vs. increased [Δ%BF 0.0–13.7%] vs. highly increased [Δ%BF ≥13.7%]). Inverse probability of treatment weighting was applied to balance the covariate differences among the groups.

Results

The age was 51.2±8.5 years and 51.6% was male. Median observation duration was 163 (the interquartile range: 157–168) months. The all-cause death and cardiovascular death occurred most frequently in the decreased Δ%BF group and least frequent in the highly increased Δ%BF group in both unweighted and weighted cohort. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard models showed that the risk of all-cause death was lower in the increased and highly increased Δ%BF groups (hazard ratio [HR] 0.61 [0.47–0.80] and 0.24 [0.17–0.34], respectively) and the risk of cardiovascular death was lower in the highly increased Δ%BF group (HR 0.20 [0.08–0.48]), compared to those in the decreased Δ%BF group after adjustment for all covariates including physical activities and the changes in muscle mass. The risk of all-cause death and cardiovascular death linearly decreased with increasing Δ%BF (HR 0.72 [0.67–0.77] and 0.70 [0.60–0.82], respectively).

Conclusion

The increase in body fat is associated with a lower risk of all-cause death and cardiovascular death in a middle-age general population, independently with physical activities and the changes in muscle mass.

Fate of the micropenis and constitutional small penis: do they grow to normalcy in puberty?

INTRODUCTION

Penile length is an important indicator of male sexual development. Scarce data were reported on penile length measurements in children comparing changes between prepuberty and puberty for the small penile issue with long-term follow-up.

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of catch-up growth of the penile length of boys with a small penis in the long-term follow-up.

STUDY DESIGN

From April 2001 to December 2016, 27 boys who visited the outpatient clinic owing to a small penis, without any chromosomal anomalies and other genital disorder, were investigated retrospectively. Micropenis is defined as 2.5 standard deviations less than the mean stretched penile length (SPL) of age. Periodic penile length, testicular volume, hormonal levels (serum testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)), and bone age were measured. Pubertal development was recorded by using the Tanner scale. The effect of hormonal therapy and the factors attributable to the increment of the penile length were evaluated.

RESULTS

The mean age at the first visit was 9.8 years (5-12 years) and that at puberty was 12.6 years (10-16 years). The length of the penis at the initial visit was 4.0 ± 0.8 cm (2.5-6.0) and at puberty, 7.3 ± 1.8 cm (4.0-12.0). Nine patients diagnosed with micropenis no longer had a micropenis in puberty. The less the age-matched SPL, the more the increment of SPL that was observed (rho = - 0.548, P = 0.003). The mean increment of SPL in the hormonal therapy group (11 boys) and the non-hormonal therapy group (16 boys) was not statistically different (43.5 ± 22. 9% vs 41.5 ± 21.6%, respectively, P = 0.497).

DISCUSSION

This study explains how much the growth of a small penis catches up in puberty. From the point of view of the increment of SPL, the increment was higher in boys who belonged to the smaller penis group. Hormonal therapy does not attribute to an increase in the length after long-term follow-up. Limitations of this study were its retrospective origin with a small number of patients in a single center.

CONCLUSION

Catch-up growth of the small penis at puberty was accomplished in most children with a small penis before puberty. Hormonal treatment was not significantly correlated with the penile length increment in the long-term follow-up.

Population genetic structure and putative migration pathway of Sogatella furcifera (Horváth) (Hemiptera, Delphacidae) in Asia

The white-backed planthopper, Sogatella furcifera (Horváth) (Hemiptera, Delphacidae), has emerged as a serious rice pest in Asia. In the present study, 12 microsatellite markers were employed to investigate the genetic structure, diversity and migration route of 43 populations sampled from seven Asian countries (Bangladesh, China, Korea, Laos, Nepal, Thailand, and Vietnam). According to the isolation by distance analysis, a significant positive correlation was observed between genetic and geographic distances by the Mantel test (r2 = 0.4585, P = 0.01), indicating the role of geographic isolation in the genetic structure of S. furcifera. A population assignment test using the first-generation migrants detection method (thresholds a = 0.01) revealed southern China and northern Vietnam as the main sources of S. furcifera in Korea. Nepal and Bangladesh might be additional potential sources via interconnection with Vietnam populations. This paper provides useful data for the migration route and origin of S. furcifera in Korea and will contribute to planthopper resistance management.

Single GaAs Nanowire/Graphene Hybrid Devices Fabricated by a Position-Controlled Microtransfer and an Imprinting Technique for an Embedded Structure

We developed a new technique to fabricate single nanowire devices with reliable graphene/nanowire contacts using a position-controlled microtransfer and an embedded nanowire structure in a planar junction configuration. A thorough study of electrical properties and fabrication challenges of single p-GaAs nanowire/graphene devices was carried out in two different device configurations: (1) a graphene bottom-contact device where the nanowire-graphene contact junction is formed by transferring a nanowire on top of graphene and (2) a graphene top-contact device where the nanowire-graphene contact junction is formed by transferring graphene on top of an embedded nanowire. For the graphene top-contact devices, graphene-nanowire-metal devices, where graphene is used as one electrode and metal is the other electrode to a nanowire, and graphene-nanowire-graphene devices, where both electrodes to a nanowire are graphene, were investigated and compared with conventional metal/p-GaAs nanowire devices. Conventional metal/p-GaAs nanowire contact devices were further investigated in embedded and nonembedded nanowire device configurations. A significantly improved current in the embedded device configuration is explained with a "parallel resistors model" where the high-resistance parts with the metal-semiconductor Schottky contact and the low-resistance parts with noncontacted facets of the hexagonal nanowires are taken into consideration. Consistently, the nonembedded nanowire structure is found to be depleted much easier than the embedded nanowires from which an estimation for a fully depleted condition has also been established.

Predictors of incisional hernia in adult liver transplant recipients

PURPOSE

Incisional hernia is a complication following abdominal operation. Patients undergoing liver transplantation have a high risk of developing incisional hernia because of immunosuppression. The purpose of this study was to evaluate incisional hernia after liver transplantation and to identify risk factors for hernia formation in those patients.

METHODS

We retrospectively reviewed 1044 adult patients with more than 2 years of follow-up in patients who underwent liver transplantation from January 2000 to December 2015.

RESULTS

Incisional hernia was identified in 79 patients with more than 2 years of follow-up. The overall incisional hernia rate was 7.6%. The mean age and body mass index (BMI) of the patients with incisional hernia were 55 ± 9 years and 25.3 ± 3.7 kg/m², respectively. No significant differences in gender, diagnosis, diabetes, Child-Pugh score, model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score, donor type, hepatorenal syndrome, varix bleeding, ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, ventilator use, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP), or bile leakage were found between patients who did and did not develop incisional hernia. Patients with acute rejection before hernia development were more to have herniated patients hernia (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Age greater than 55 years and high BMI were significant risk factors. We identified risk factors for the development of incisional hernia. Based on these risk factors, attention should be paid to incisional hernia in older and obese patients.

A Compressed-Sensing Based Blind Deconvolution Method for Image Deblurring in Dental Cone-Beam Computed Tomography

In cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), reconstructed images are inherently degraded, restricting its image performance, due mainly to imperfections in the imaging process resulting from detector resolution, noise, X-ray tube's focal spot, and reconstruction procedure as well. Thus, the recovery of CBCT images from their degraded version is essential for improving image quality. In this study, we investigated a compressed-sensing (CS)-based blind deconvolution method to solve the blurring problem in CBCT where both the image to be recovered and the blur kernel (or point-spread function) of the imaging system are simultaneously recursively identified. We implemented the proposed algorithm and performed a systematic simulation and experiment to demonstrate the feasibility of using the algorithm for image deblurring in dental CBCT. In the experiment, we used a commercially available dental CBCT system that consisted of an X-ray tube, which was operated at 90 kV_p and 5 mA, and a CMOS flat-panel detector with a 200-μm pixel size. The image characteristics were quantitatively investigated in terms of the image intensity, the root-mean-square error, the contrast-to-noise ratio, and the noise power spectrum. The results indicate that our proposed method effectively reduced the image blur in dental CBCT, excluding repetitious measurement of the system's blur kernel.

CXCR3-deficient mesenchymal stem cells fail to infiltrate into the nephritic kidney and do not ameliorate lupus symptoms in MRL. Faslpr mice

Mesenchymal stem cell therapy is a promising candidate for the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). To exert their efficacy fully, mesenchymal stem cells must infiltrate efficiently into the lesion sites. Here, we examined the role of CXCR3 in mesenchymal stem cell infiltration into the kidney of MRL. Fas^lpr mice, which highly expressed CXCL10. The phenotypes, production of immunosuppressive mediators, and capacity to inhibit T and B cells of CXCR3-deficient mesenchymal stem cells were similar to those of wild-type mesenchymal stem cells. However, they showed less infiltration into the nephritic kidney, less conjugation with endothelial cells and weaker MMP-9 expression than did wild-type mesenchymal stem cells. Consequently, CXCR3-deficient mesenchymal stem cells did not ameliorate lupus symptoms in MRL. Fas^lpr mice in comparison with wild-type mesenchymal stem cells. In summary, our data suggest that upregulation of CXCR3 in mesenchymal stem cells will be a good strategy to increase their infiltration into the kidney, which will improve therapeutic outcomes in SLE.

Observation of Complex Time Structures in the Cosmic-Ray Electron and Positron Fluxes with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station

We present high-statistics, precision measurements of the detailed time and energy dependence of the primary cosmic-ray electron flux and positron flux over 79 Bartels rotations from May 2011 to May 2017 in the energy range from 1 to 50 GeV. For the first time, the charge-sign dependent modulation during solar maximum has been investigated in detail by leptons alone. Based on 23.5×10^{6} events, we report the observation of short-term structures on the timescale of months coincident in both the electron flux and the positron flux. These structures are not visible in the e^{+}/e^{-} flux ratio. The precision measurements across the solar polarity reversal show that the ratio exhibits a smooth transition over 830±30 days from one value to another. The midpoint of the transition shows an energy dependent delay relative to the reversal and changes by 260±30 days from 1 to 6 GeV.

Observation of Fine Time Structures in the Cosmic Proton and Helium Fluxes with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station

We present the precision measurement from May 2011 to May 2017 (79 Bartels rotations) of the proton fluxes at rigidities from 1 to 60 GV and the helium fluxes from 1.9 to 60 GV based on a total of 1×10^{9} events collected with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer aboard the International Space Station. This measurement is in solar cycle 24, which has the solar maximum in April 2014. We observed that, below 40 GV, the proton flux and the helium flux show nearly identical fine structures in both time and relative amplitude. The amplitudes of the flux structures decrease with increasing rigidity and vanish above 40 GV. The amplitudes of the structures are reduced during the time period, which started one year after solar maximum, when the proton and helium fluxes steadily increase. Above ∼3  GV the p/He flux ratio is time independent. We observed that below ∼3  GV the ratio has a long-term decrease coinciding with the period during which the fluxes start to rise.

Complications After Multiple-Site Peripheral Nerve Blocks for Foot and Ankle Surgery Compared With Popliteal Sciatic Nerve Block Alone

BACKGROUND

Single or combined multiple-site peripheral nerve blocks (PNBs) are becoming popular for patients undergoing surgery on their feet or ankles. These procedures are known to be generally safe in surgical settings compared with other forms of anesthesia, such as spinal block. The purposes of this study were to assess the incidence of complications after the administration of multiple PNBs for foot and ankle surgery and to compare the rates of complications between patients who received a single PNB and those who received multiple blocks.

METHODS

Charts were reviewed retrospectively to assess peri- and postoperative complications possibly related to the PNBs. The records of 827 patients who had received sciatic nerve blocks, femoral nerve blocks adductor canal blocks, or combinations of these for foot and/or ankle surgery were analyzed for complications. The collected data consisted of age, sex, body mass index, presence of diabetes mellitus, smoking history, tourniquet time, and complications both immediately postoperatively and 1 year later.

RESULTS

Of these 827 patients, 92 (11.1%) developed neurologic symptoms after surgery; 22 (2.7%) of these likely resulted from the nerve blocks, and 7 (0.8%) of these were unresolved after the patients' last follow-up visits. There were no differences in complication rates between combined blocks and single sciatic nerve blocks.

CONCLUSION

There were more complications, both transient and long term, after anesthetic PNBs than previous literature has reported. Combined multiple-site blocks did not increase the rate of neurologic complications.

Ultrastrong Graphene-Copper Core-Shell Wires for High-Performance Electrical Cables

Recent development in mobile electronic devices and electric vehicles requires electrical wires with reduced weight as well as enhanced stability. In addition, since electric energy is mostly generated from power plants located far from its consuming places, mechanically stronger and higher electric power transmission cables are strongly demanded. However, there has been no alternative materials that can practically replace copper materials. Here, we report a method to prepare ultrastrong graphene fibers (GFs)-Cu core-shell wires with significantly enhanced electrical and mechanical properties. The core GFs are synthesized by chemical vapor deposition, followed by electroplating of Cu shells, where the large surface area of GFs in contact with Cu maximizes the mechanical toughness of the core-shell wires. At the same time, the unique electrical and thermal characteristics of graphene allow a ∼10 times higher current density limit, providing more efficient and reliable delivery of electrical energies through the GFs-Cu wires. We believe that our results would be useful to overcome the current limit in electrical wires and cables for lightweight, energy-saving, and high-power applications.

Observation of New Properties of Secondary Cosmic Rays Lithium, Beryllium, and Boron by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station

We report on the observation of new properties of secondary cosmic rays Li, Be, and B measured in the rigidity (momentum per unit charge) range 1.9 GV to 3.3 TV with a total of 5.4×10^{6} nuclei collected by AMS during the first five years of operation aboard the International Space Station. The Li and B fluxes have an identical rigidity dependence above 7 GV and all three fluxes have an identical rigidity dependence above 30 GV with the Li/Be flux ratio of 2.0±0.1. The three fluxes deviate from a single power law above 200 GV in an identical way. This behavior of secondary cosmic rays has also been observed in the AMS measurement of primary cosmic rays He, C, and O but the rigidity dependences of primary cosmic rays and of secondary cosmic rays are distinctly different. In particular, above 200 GV, the secondary cosmic rays harden more than the primary cosmic rays.

Observation of the Identical Rigidity Dependence of He, C, and O Cosmic Rays at High Rigidities by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station

We report the observation of new properties of primary cosmic rays He, C, and O measured in the rigidity (momentum/charge) range 2 GV to 3 TV with 90×10^{6} helium, 8.4×10^{6} carbon, and 7.0×10^{6} oxygen nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) during the first five years of operation. Above 60 GV, these three spectra have identical rigidity dependence. They all deviate from a single power law above 200 GV and harden in an identical way.

Polyphenols journey through blood-brain barrier towards neuronal protection

Age-related complications such as neurodegenerative disorders are increasing and remain cureless. The possibility of altering the progression or the development of these multifactorial diseases through diet is an emerging and attractive approach with increasing experimental support. We examined the potential of known bioavailable phenolic sulfates, arising from colonic metabolism of berries, to influence hallmarks of neurodegenerative processes. In silico predictions and in vitro transport studies across blood-brain barrier (BBB) endothelial cells, at circulating concentrations, provided evidence for differential transport, likely related to chemical structure. Moreover, endothelial metabolism of these phenolic sulfates produced a plethora of novel chemical entities with further potential bioactivies. Pre-conditioning with phenolic sulfates improved cellular responses to oxidative, excitotoxicity and inflammatory injuries and this attenuation of neuroinflammation was achieved via modulation of NF-κB pathway. Our results support the hypothesis that these small molecules, derived from dietary (poly)phenols may cross the BBB, reach brain cells, modulate microglia-mediated inflammation and exert neuroprotective effects, with potential for alleviation of neurodegenerative diseases.

Brain Transplantation of Neural Stem Cells Cotransduced with Tyrosine Hydroxylase and GTP Cyclohydrolase 1 in Parkinsonian Rats

Neural stem cells (NSCs) of the central nervous system (CNS) recently have attracted a great deal of interest not only because of their importance in basic research on neural development, but also in terms of their therapeutic potential in neurological diseases, such as Parkinson's disease (PD). To examine if genetically modified NSCs are a suitable source for the cell and gene therapy of PD, an immortalized mouse NSC line, C17.2, was transduced with tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) gene and with GTP cyclohydrolase 1 (GTPCH1) gene, which are important enzymes in dopamine biosynthesis. The expression of TH in transduced C17.2-THGC cells was confirmed by RT-PCR, Western blot analysis, and immunocytochemistry, and expression of GTPCH1 by RT-PCR. The level of L-DOPA released by C17.2-THGC cells, as determined by HPLC assay, was 3793 pmol/106 cells, which is 760-fold higher than that produced by C17.2-TH cells, indicating that GTPCH1 expression is important for L-DOPA production by transduced C17.2 cells. Following the implantation of C17.2-THGcC NSCs into the striata of parkinsonian rats, a marked improvement in amphetamine-induced turning behavior was observed in parkinsonian rats grafted with C17.2-THGC cells but not in the control rats grafted with C17.2 cells. These results indicate that genetically modified NSCs grafted into the brain of the parkinsonian rats are capable of survival, migration, and neuronal differentiation. Collectively, these results suggest that NSCs have great potential as a source of cells for cell therapy and an effective vehicle for therapeutic gene transfer in Parkinson's disease.

ROS-dependent HMGB1 secretion upregulates IL-8 in upper airway epithelial cells under hypoxic condition

High-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) mediates various functions according to the location. We tried to investigate the role of HMGB1 in upper airway under hypoxic conditions. We cultured primary normal human nasal epithelium (NHNE) cells under hypoxic conditions and evaluated the movement of HMGB1 by western blotting, immunofluorescence, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Reactive oxygen species (ROS) level was evaluated to estimate the translocation mechanism of HMGB1. The role of secreted HMGB1 was evaluated by ELISA assay. Furthermore, we collected human nasal mucosa samples and nasal lavage fluids from patients conditioned under hypoxic and non-hypoxic environment, and compared the expression of HMGB1 in human nasal mucosa samples by immunohistochemistry and the levels of HMGB1 in lavage fluids using ELISA assay. Hypoxia induced translocation of HMGB1 into the extracellular area and it was dependent on ROS produced by dual oxidase 2. Secreted HMGB1 was involved in the upregulation of interleukin (IL)-8. In human samples, HMGB1 was translocated from nucleus to the cytoplasm in hypoxic-conditioned nasal mucosa. HMGB1 was increased in nasal lavage samples of chronic rhinosinusitis patients, whose sinus mucosa was supposed to be hypoxic as compared with controls. We suggest that HMGB1 is secreted in hypoxic condition via ROS-dependent mechanism and secreted HMGB1 participates in IL-8 upregulation mediating inflammatory response.

Removal of solitary neurofibroma of the external nose by intranasal approach

INTRODUCTION

Solitary neurofibroma originating from the external nose is extremely rare, and to our knowledge, only 3 cases have been reported so far in English literatures. It may originate from the ophthalmic (V1) and maxillary (V2) branches of the trigeminal nerve.

CASE REPORT

We present a rare case of solitary neurofibroma arising from the external nose, which was successfully removed by intranasal approach with intercartilaginous incision.

CONCLUSION

This case emphasizes two important points. First, we should keep in mind that this clinical entity is included in the differential diagnosis of soft tissue masses arising from the external nose. Second, we should choose the best surgical approach for complete removal with the maintenance of cosmetic appearance.

Characteristic clinical features associated with aggressive posterior retinopathy of prematurity

PurposeTo identify the risk factors for, and clinical features and treatment outcomes of aggressive posterior retinopathy of prematurity (APROP) in Korean infants.MethodsAmong 770 premature infants who underwent screening, 105 infants (198 eyes, 13.63%) received treatment for ROP. A total of 24 infants (48 eyes, 3.12%) developed APROP while 81 infants (150 eyes, 10.52%) developed non-APROP treatment-requiring type. The medical records of ROP-treated infants were reviewed retrospectively. The associated systemic and maternal risk factors were analyzed and anatomical outcomes were compared according to the severity of ROP and treatment modalities.ResultsThe mean gestational age and birth weight at birth in the APROP group were significantly lower than those in the non-APROP group (P=0.019, P<0.001, respectively). Infants who were born small for their GA developed APROP more frequently than non-APROP patients (P<0.001). Chorioamnionitis-positive infants also showed higher incidence rate of APROP (APROP vs non-APROP; P<0.001 and zone I APROP vs posterior zone II APROP; P=0.036, respectively). Infants with APROP required heavier laser treatment with a higher retreatment rate compared to infants with non-APROP. Favorable anatomical outcomes were achieved in 95.3% from treatment-requiring non-APROP group, 85.7% from zone I APROP and 84.6% from posterior zone II APROP group.ConclusionIntrauterine growth restriction and chorioamnionitis were associated with development of APROP. These findings suggest that perinatal maternal environment inhibiting normal retinal vascular growth in utero may contribute to increasing the risk of APROP in premature infants.

Prevalence and risk factors of chronic rhinosinusitis in South Korea according to diagnostic criteria

BACKGROUND

We aimed to compare the prevalence and risk factors of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) using two different diagnostic criteria with the same statistical data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2009.

METHODS

Symptom-based CRS was defined as CRS diagnosed by questionnaires related to nasal symptoms. Endoscopy-based CRS was defined based on endoscopic findings and nasal symptoms of symptom-based CRS.

RESULTS

The overall prevalence of CRS based on the different diagnostic criteria was as follows: symptom-based CRS was 10.78% (797 of 7,394) and endoscopy-based CRS was 1.20% (88 of 7,343). Comparing symptom-based CRS to endoscopy-based CRS showed slight agreement (kappa = 0.183 (0.150-0.216, 95% confidence interval)). Allergic rhinitis was identified as a common risk factor for CRS based on the two diagnostic criteria.

CONCLUSIONS

The prevalence and risk factors of CRS were quite different from each other according to the different criteria, even in the same population. Therefore, it would be important to consider what specific diagnostic criteria have been adopted in the studies comparing the prevalence of CRS.

Effect of Histophilus somni on Heart and Brain Microvascular Endothelial Cells

Histophilus somni is a pathogenic gram-negative bacterium responsible for pneumonia and septicemia in cattle. Sequelae include infectious thrombotic meningoencephalitis (ITME), myocarditis, arthritis, and abortion. These syndromes are associated with widespread vasculitis and thrombosis, implicating a role for endothelium in pathogenesis. Histopathologic and immunohistochemical investigation of 10 natural cases of bovine H. somni myocarditis and 1 case of ITME revealed intravascular H. somni in large biofilm-like aggregates adherent to the luminal surface of microvascular endothelium. Ultrastructurally, bacterial communities were extracellular and closely associated with degenerating or contracted endothelial cells. Histophilus somni was identified by bacterial culture and/or immunohistochemistry. Western blots of the bacterial isolates revealed that they expressed the immunodominant protective 40 kDa OMP and immunoglobulin-binding protein A (IbpA) antigens. The latter is a large surface antigen and shed fibrillar antigen with multiple domains. The cytotoxic DR2Fic domain of IbpA was conserved as demonstrated by polymerase chain reaction. Treatment of endothelial cells in vitro with IbpA in crude culture supernatants or purified recombinant GST-IbpA DR2Fic (rDR2) cytotoxin induced retraction of cultured bovine brain microvascular endothelial cells. By contrast, no retraction of bovine endothelium was induced by mutant rDR2H/A with an inactive Fic motif or by a GST control, indicating that the cytotoxic DR2Fic motif plays an important role in endothelial cell retraction in vasculitis. The formation of biofilm-like aggregates by H. somni on bovine microvascular endothelium may be fundamental to its pathogenesis in heart and brain.

KRT19 directly interacts with β-catenin/RAC1 complex to regulate NUMB-dependent NOTCH signaling pathway and breast cancer properties

Studies have reported that interactions between keratins (KRTs) and other proteins initiate signaling cascades that regulate cell migration, invasion, and metastasis. In the current study, we found that expression of KRT19 was specifically high in breast cancers and significantly correlated with their invasiveness. Moreover, knockdown of KRT19 led to increased proliferation, migration, invasion, drug resistance, and sphere formation in breast cancer cells via an upregulated NOTCH signaling pathway. This was owing to reduced expression of NUMB, an inhibitory protein of the NOTCH signaling pathway. In addition, we found that KRT19 interacts with β-catenin/RAC1 complex and enhances the nuclear translocation of β-catenin. Concordantly, knockdown of KRT19 suppressed the nuclear translocation of β-catenin as well as β-catenin-mediated NUMB expression. Furthermore, modulation of KRT19-mediated regulation of NUMB and NOTCH1 expression led to the repression of the cancer stem cell properties of breast cancer patient-derived CD133high/CXCR4high/ALDH1high cancer stem-like cells (CSLCs), which showed very low KRT19 and high NOTCH1 expression. Taken together, our study suggests a novel function for KRT19 in the regulation of nuclear import of the β-catenin/RAC1 complex, thus modulating the NUMB-dependent NOTCH signaling pathway in breast cancers and CSLCs, which might bear potential clinical implications for cancer or CSLC treatment.

Precision Measurement of the Boron to Carbon Flux Ratio in Cosmic Rays from 1.9 GV to 2.6 TV with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station

Knowledge of the rigidity dependence of the boron to carbon flux ratio (B/C) is important in understanding the propagation of cosmic rays. The precise measurement of the B/C ratio from 1.9 GV to 2.6 TV, based on 2.3 million boron and 8.3 million carbon nuclei collected by AMS during the first 5 years of operation, is presented. The detailed variation with rigidity of the B/C spectral index is reported for the first time. The B/C ratio does not show any significant structures in contrast to many cosmic ray models that require such structures at high rigidities. Remarkably, above 65 GV, the B/C ratio is well described by a single power law R^{Δ} with index Δ=-0.333±0.014(fit)±0.005(syst), in good agreement with the Kolmogorov theory of turbulence which predicts Δ=-1/3 asymptotically.

Ultrafast Heating for Intrinsic Properties of Atomically Thin Two-Dimensional Materials on Plastic Substrates

Despite recent progress in producing flexible and stretchable electronics based on two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets, their intrinsic properties are often degraded by the presence of polymeric residues that remain attached to the 2D nanosheet surfaces following fabrication. Further breakthroughs are therefore keenly awaited to obtain clean surfaces compatible with flexible applications. Here, we report a method that allows the 2D nanosheets to be intrinsically integrated onto flexible substrates. The method involves thermal decomposition of polymeric residues by microwave-induced ultrafast heating of the surface without affecting the underlying flexible substrate. Mapping the C═O stretching mode by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy in combination with atomic force microscopy confirms elimination of the polymeric residues from the 2D nanosheet surface. Flexible devices prepared using microwave-cleaned 2D nanosheets show enhanced electrical, optical, and electrothermal performances. This simple technique is applicable to a wide range of 2D nanomaterials and represents an important advance in the field of flexible devices.

Effect of graphene oxide ratio on the cell adhesion and growth behavior on a graphene oxide-coated silicon substrate

Control of living cells on biocompatible materials or on modified substrates is important for the development of bio-applications, including biosensors and implant biomaterials. The topography and hydrophobicity of substrates highly affect cell adhesion, growth, and cell growth kinetics, which is of great importance in bio-applications. Herein, we investigate the adhesion, growth, and morphology of cultured breast cancer cells on a silicon substrate, on which graphene oxides (GO) was partially formed. By minimizing the size and amount of the GO-containing solution and the further annealing process, GO-coated Si samples were prepared which partially covered the Si substrates. The coverage of GO on Si samples decreases upon annealing. The behaviors of cells cultured on two samples have been observed, i.e. partially GO-coated Si (P-GO) and annealed partially GO-coated Si (Annealed p-GO), with a different coverage of GO. Indeed, the spreading area covered by the cells and the number of cells for a given culture period in the incubator were highly dependent on the hydrophobicity and the presence of oxygenated groups on GO and Si substrates, suggesting hydrophobicity-driven cell growth. Thus, the presented method can be used to control the cell growth via an appropriate surface modification.

Polymorphic microsatellite markers for the endangered fish, the slender shiner Pseudopungtungia tenuicorpa and cross-species amplification across five related species

The slender shiner Pseudopungtungia tenuicorpa (Cypriniformes; Cyprinidae; Gobioninae) is an endangered freshwater fish species endemic to Korea. The current strategies for its conservation involve the study of population genetic characters and identification of management units. These strategies require suitable molecular markers to study genetic diversity and genetic structure. Here, we developed nine polymorphic microsatellite markers for P. tenuicorpa for the first time by applying an enrichment method from a size-selected genomic library. The developed microsatellite markers produced a total of 101 alleles (average 11.2). The observed and expected heterozygosities averaged 0.805 and 0.835, respectively. Among the nine identified markers, five markers showed successful amplification across five related Korean Gobioninae species. Thus, the microsatellite markers developed in this study will be useful to establish conservation strategies for both P. tenuicorpa and other related species.

Antiproton Flux, Antiproton-to-Proton Flux Ratio, and Properties of Elementary Particle Fluxes in Primary Cosmic Rays Measured with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station

A precision measurement by AMS of the antiproton flux and the antiproton-to-proton flux ratio in primary cosmic rays in the absolute rigidity range from 1 to 450 GV is presented based on 3.49×10^{5} antiproton events and 2.42×10^{9} proton events. The fluxes and flux ratios of charged elementary particles in cosmic rays are also presented. In the absolute rigidity range ∼60 to ∼500  GV, the antiproton p[over ¯], proton p, and positron e^{+} fluxes are found to have nearly identical rigidity dependence and the electron e^{-} flux exhibits a different rigidity dependence. Below 60 GV, the (p[over ¯]/p), (p[over ¯]/e^{+}), and (p/e^{+}) flux ratios each reaches a maximum. From ∼60 to ∼500  GV, the (p[over ¯]/p), (p[over ¯]/e^{+}), and (p/e^{+}) flux ratios show no rigidity dependence. These are new observations of the properties of elementary particles in the cosmos.
