Removal of o-nitrobenzoic acid by adsorption on to a new organoclay: montmorillonite modified with HDTMA microemulsion

A new organoclay, consisting of montmorillonite modified by a hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium (HDTMA) microemulsion, was synthesized, characterized and used as an adsorbent for the removal of o-nitrobenzoic acid from aqueous solution. Adsorption kinetics, isotherms and effects of operating variables, such as adsorbent dosage, ionic strength and initial solution pH, were also investigated. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and BET surface area determination indicated that HDTMA molecules had entered into the interlayer of the montmorillonite. The optimized experimental conditions for the adsorption of o-nitrobenzoic acid by montmorillonite modified by HDTMA microemulsion were 0.5 g adsorbent dosage, 0.4 mL of 0.1 mol lbL(-1) CaCl2 solution, initial solution pH of 6.0 and contact time of 6 h. The adsorption isotherms of o-nitrobenzoic acid fitted the Langmuir model well (R2 = 0.9880). The adsorption kinetics data fitted the pseudo-second-order equation (R2 = 0.9999). These above results indicate that montmorillonite modified by an HDTMA microemulsion can be used as adsorbent for o-nitrobenzoic acid because of its high adsorption capacity and low cost.

Adsorption of cadmium onto Al(13)-pillared acid-activated montmorillonite

The optimal preparation conditions for Al(13)-pillared acid-activated Na(+)-montmorillonite (Al(13)-PAAMt) were (1) an acid-activated Na(+)-montmorillonite (Na(+)-Mt) solution of pH 3.0, (2) a OH(-)/Al(3+) molar ratio of 2.4 and (3) Al(3+)/Na(+)-Mt ratio of 1.0 mmol g(-1). The effects of OH(-)/Al(3+) and Al(3+)/Na(+)-Mt ratios on the adsorption of Cd(2+) onto Al(13)-PAAMt were studied. A comparison of the adsorption of Cd(2+) onto Al(13)-PAAMt, Al(13)-pillared Na(+)-montmorillonite (Al(13)-PMt) and Na(+)-Mt suggested that Al(13)-PAAMt had higher adsorption affinity for Cd(2+) than the other two adsorbents. A pseudo-second-order model described the adsorption kinetics well. Cadmium adsorption followed the Langmuir two-site equation, while desorption was hysteretic.

Effect of lead on the sorption of phenol onto montmorillonites and organo-montmorillonites

The effect of lead (Pb) on the sorption of phenol onto montmorillonite-based sorbents was studied using a batch equilibration method when phenol and Pb were sorbed simultaneously and either Pb or phenol was previously sorbed. The sorbents were Na(+)-, Ca(2+)-, hexadecyl trimethylammonium (HDTMA)-Na(+)-, and HDTMA-Ca(2+)-montmorillonites. Pb diminished the sorption of phenol largely onto Na(+)- or Ca(2+)-montmorillonites, while phenol had little effect on the sorption of Pb onto all sorbents. Pb had no effect on the sorption of phenol onto HDTMA-Na(+)- or HDTMA-Ca(2+)-montmorillonites either. The sorption capacity of phenol followed the order HDTMA-Na(+)- > HDTMA-Ca(2+)- > Na(+)- > Ca(2+)-montmorillonites. The pseudo-second-order equation described the kinetics of phenol sorption well. Sorption isotherms of phenol followed the Freundlich equation. Phenol sorption on HDTMA-Na(+)- and HDTMA-Ca(2+)-montmorillonites was linear, while that on Na(+)- and Ca(2+)-montmorillonites was nonlinear.

Integrin engagement mediates tyrosine dephosphorylation on platelet-endothelial cell adhesion molecule 1

Platelet-endothelial cell adhesion molecule 1 (PECAM-1, CD31) is a 130-kDa member of the immunoglobulin gene superfamily expressed on endothelial cells, platelets, neutrophils, and monocytes and plays a role during endothelial cell migration. Phosphoamino acid analysis and Western blot analysis with anti-phosphotyrosine antibody show that endothelial PECAM-1 is tyrosine-phosphorylated. Phosphorylation is decreased with endothelial cell migration on fibronectin and collagen and with cell spreading on fibronectin but not on plastic. Cell adhesion on anti-integrin antibodies is also able to specifically induce PECAM-1 dephosphorylation while concurrently inducing pp125 focal adhesion kinase phosphorylation. Inhibition of dephosphorylation with sodium orthovanadate suggests that this effect is at least partially mediated by phosphatase activity. Tyr-663 and Tyr-686 are identified as potential phosphorylation sites and mutated to phenylalanine. When expressed, both mutants show reduced PECAM-1 phosphorylation but Phe-686 mutants also show significant reversal of PECAM-1-mediated inhibition of cell migration and do not localize PECAM-1 to cell borders. Our results suggest that beta 1-integrin engagement can signal to dephosphorylate PECAM-1 and that this signaling pathway may play a role during endothelial cell migration.
