Highly Sensitive, Low-Energy-Consumption Biomimetic Olfactory Synaptic Transistors Based on the Aggregation of the Semiconductor Films

Artificial olfactory synaptic devices with low energy consumption and low detection limits are important for the further development of neuromorphic computing and intelligent robotics. In this work, an ultralow energy consumption and low detection limit imitation olfactory synaptic device based on organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) was prepared. The aggregation state of poly(diketopyrrolopyrrole-selenophene) (PTDPP) semiconductor films is modulated by adding unfavorable solvents and annealing treatments to obtain excellent charge transfer and gas synaptic properties. The regulated OFET device can execute basic biological synaptic functions, including excitatory postsynaptic currents (EPSCs), paired-pulse facilitation (PPF), and the transition from short-term to long-term plasticity, at an ultralow operating voltage of -0.0005 V. The ultralow energy consumption during the biomimetic simulation is in the range of 8.94-88 fJ per spike. Noteworthily, the gas detection limit of the device is as low as 50 ppb, well below normal human NO2 gas perception limits (100-1000 ppb). Additionally, high-pass filtering, Pavlovian conditioned reflexes, and decoding of "Morse code" were simulated. Finally, a grid-free conformal device with outstanding flexibility and stability was fabricated. In conclusion, the control of semiconductor thin-film aggregation provides effective guidance for preparing low-energy-consumption, highly sensitive olfactory nerve-mimicking devices and promoting the development of wearable electronics.

Clinical and radiographic outcomes of a combined surgery approach to treat peri-implantitis

Peri-implant infra-bony defects are difficult to treat, and data on the management of peri-implantitis are lacking. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a combined surgical approach to manage peri-implantitis: implantoplasty with xenogeneic bone grafting and a concentrated growth factor membrane. Two independent examiners analysed the medical records and radiographs taken before surgery and at the last follow-up. Data were analysed at the implant level; some patient-level data (age, sex, smoking habit) were also considered. Linear regression analysis with generalized estimating equations (GEE) was used to explore the effect of variables of interest (including marginal bone level (MBL)) on implantitis treatment success and resolution rates. The effect of the prosthesis type on postoperative clinical and radiographic parameters was also explored by GEE, with adjustment for age, sex, tooth site, location, follow-up duration, and implant length (model IV including all). Thirty patients with 72 implants were investigated. The implant survival rate was 100% over a mean observation period of 3.3 years (range 2-11 years). The treatment success rate (bone loss <0.5 mm, no bleeding on probing (BOP), no suppuration, probing depth (PD) < 5 mm) was higher in females than males (50% vs 19.0%; P = 0.008). At the last postoperative follow-up, the MBL (1.51 ± 1.07 vs 4.01 ± 1.13 mm), PD (3.61 ± 0.84 vs 6.54 ± 1.01 mm), and BOP (23.38 ± 23.18% vs 79.17 ± 15.51%) were significantly reduced when compared to pre-surgery values (all P < 0.001). Furthermore, a significantly higher PD reduction (β = -1.10 mm, 95% confidence interval -1.97 to -0.23 mm, P = 0.014) was observed for implants with a single crown than a full-arch prosthesis (GEE model IV). Preliminary clinical and radiographic data indicate that implantoplasty in combination with surgery could be an effective treatment option for peri-implantitis.

Up-Regulation of TCF21 Expression Reverses the Malignant Phenotype of Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts in Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), as one major component of tumor microenvironment (TME), are closely associated with tumor initiation and progression. Our previous studies have discovered that CAFs induced the resistance of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) cells to a variety of chemotherapeutic drugs such as cisplatin and paclitaxel. Furthermore, CAFs attenuated ionizing irradiation (IR)-induced cancer cells death by regulating DNA damage response. CAFs themselves are highly resistant to death stimuli due to enhanced antioxidant potential and DNA repair capacity. How to inhibit the malignant phenotype of CAFs is critically important for the radical treatment of ESCC.

MATERIALS/METHODS

By RNA-sequencing and DNA methylation analysis, the transcriptome and epigenome of CAFs and matched normal fibroblasts (NFs) have been integratively analyzed. By transfection of TCF21 cDNA plasmid, the expression of TCF21 in CAFs has been up-regulated. Using a cell counting kit and migration and invasion assay, the effect of TCF21 on the growth and migration and invasive ability of CAFs has been detected. Using immunofluorescence and flow cytometry (FCM) analysis and western blotting, the effect of TCF21 on the DNA damage repair and apoptotic death of CAFs following IR has been detected.

RESULTS

TCF21 is one of the top ten down-regulated genes in CAFs compared with NFs due to promoter methylation. Up-regulation of TCF21 expression inhibited the growth rate and migration and invasive ability of CAFs. The expression of α-SMA, as an indicator of CAFs activation, was down-regulated in CAFs which were transfected with TCF21 cDNA. Furthermore, when TCF21 cDNA was transfected into CAFs, IR-induced DNA damage was increased while DNA repair was inhibited in CAFs, suggesting that TCF21 was involved in DNA damage response of CAFs following IR. FCM analysis showed that up-regulation of TCF21 expression promoted IR-induced apoptotic death of CAFs.

CONCLUSION

TCF21 is a determinant of the malignant phenotype of CAFs in ESCC. Up-regulation of TCF21 expression is a promising approach of inhibiting the growth, migration and invasion, activation and radioresistance of CAFs in ESCC.

Hyperthermia Enhances the Radiosensitivity of Pancreatic Cancer Cells by Inhibiting Wnt2B Signaling

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

Pancreatic cancer (PC) is a highly lethal human malignance. Due to unobvious symptoms at early stage, most of the patients with PC are diagnosed at late stages and lose the chance of surgical resection. Furthermore, PC patients are resistant to chemoradiotherapy and therefore show a dismal survival. Hyperthermia is commonly used as a sensitizer of chemotherapy or radiotherapy for the clinical treatment of human cancers. Our study aimed to investigate whether hyperthermia can improve the radiosensitivity of PC cells and uncover the involved mechanisms.

MATERIALS/METHODS

PC cells BxPC3, CFPAC-1 and PANC1 were heated to 43 ℃ 1 h before exposure to ionizing irradiation (IR). The radiosensitivity of PC cells were detected in vitro by colony formation assay, immunofluence analysis and western blotting. The mechanisms studies have been conducted using qRT-PCR analysis, cDNA/siRNA transfection and comet assay.

RESULTS

Hyperthermia significantly enhanced the radiosensitivity of PC cells by decreasing their colony formation and increasing DNA damage following IR. By qRT-PCR analysis of Wnt genes expressions, we found Wnt2B was significantly down-regulated in PC-3 cells which were treated with the combination of hyperthermia and IR compared with hyperthermia or IR alone. Functional assays showed that the expression level of Wnt2B was inversely associated with the radiosensitivity of PC-3 cells. Furthermore, we found hyperthermia inhibited the expression of DNA repair proteins such as p-BRCA1 and p-MRE11 in PC cells following IR CONCLUSION: Hyperthermia can significantly enhance the radiosensitivity of PC cells in a Wnt2B signaling-dependent manner.

Evaluation of 68Ga-Fibroblast Activation Protein Inhibitor vs. 18F-FDG as a Novel Radiotracer for Biologically Guided Radiation Therapy

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

Real-time biology guided radiation therapy (BgRT) uses real-time positron emissions from a PET tracer during treatment to guide targeted radiation to cancerous lesions. Fibroblast activation protein alpha (FAP) is highly expressed on cancer-associated fibroblasts in tumors with low expression in normal tissues. While 18F-FDG-PET requires fasting and has background in the liver and brain, 68-Gallium labeled FAP inhibitor (FAPI) does not require fasting and has less background uptake. The goal of this study was to investigate the utility of FAPI as a potential universal fiducial for BgRT. We hypothesized that 68Ga-FAPI would be a better radiotracer than 18F-FDG, as assessed by the Normalized Minimal kBq/mL and the Normal Target Signal (NTS), two parameters used to gauge the suitability of BgRT.

MATERIALS/METHODS

PET-CTs were obtained for 50 patients with pancreatic, liver, lung, head & neck, and cervical cancer using 18F-FDG and 68Ga-FAPI (n = 10 for each). Four DICOM images were obtained per patient (FDG PET + CT, FAPI PET + CT). Radiation oncologists delineated the gross tumor volume (GTV) on PET images. A separate set of auto-contours were generated from the PET using an auto-threshold of 40% maximum SUV for all tumors. A 1 cm expansion was added to the GTV to create a ring around the physician-generated contours and auto-contours. The following parameters were measured: GTV volume, SUV max of GTV, SUV mean of GTV, Normalized Minimal kBq/mL within the GTV, and NTS (= SUV max/Ring SUV mean). Values were compared using paired t-test. For the BgRT product with similar calculations, the required Normalized Minimal kBq/mL is > 5 kBq/mL; the required NTS is > 2.7 for treatment planning and > 2.0 for BgRT delivery.

RESULTS

The Normalized Minimal kBq/mL for FAPI was > 5 kBq/mL for all tumors and greater for auto-contoured GTVs compared to physician-contoured GTVs. The mean NTS for the auto-contours for all tumor sites was > 2.0. In addition, there was a statistically significant increase in the NTS for FAPI compared to FDG in pancreatic, liver and head & neck cancers. In pancreatic cancer, there was a statistically significant increase in Normalized Minimal kBq/mL for FAPI compared to FDG (26.0 vs 14.2) (p = 0.01) and the SUVmax of FAPI was almost double that of FDG (15.9 vs 8.2) (p = 0.01). FAPI had no background in the liver, but had high background in the uterus, suggesting it may have a role in liver cancer but not cervical cancer.

CONCLUSION

This is the first study demonstrating the potential superiority of 68Ga-FAPI compared to 18F-FDG as a biologic fiducial for BgRT when treating pancreatic, liver and head & neck cancers, with a similar efficacy for lung cancer. Our results indicate that auto-contoured GTVs generate a higher NTS than physician-contoured GTVs but all are > 2.0. In addition, the Normalized Minimal kBq/mL for auto-contours is > 5 kBq/mL for all tumors. As hypothesized, FAPI-based BgRT is most likely to be successful when treating tumors with significant desmoplastic stroma, such as pancreatic cancer.

Helical Nanofiber Photoelectric Synaptic Devices for an Artificial Vision Nervous System

Inspired by the helical structure and the resultant exquisite functions of biomolecules, helical polymers have received increasing attention. Here, a series of poly(3-hexylthiophene)-block-poly(phenyl isocyanide) (P3HT-b-PPI) copolymers were prepared using a simple one-pot living polymerization method. Interestingly, the P3HT80-b-PPI30 films were found to have a helical nanofiber structure. The corresponding device has superior optoelectronic properties, such as a broadened spectral response range from the visible band to the deep ultraviolet (DUV) and an approximately 5-fold longer carrier decay time after DUV light stimulation. An energy consumption of 1.44 fJ per synaptic event was obtained, which is the lowest energy consumption achieved so far with DUV light stimulation. The encryption and decryption of images are implemented using an array of devices. Finally, a photoreceptor neural pathway was constructed to achieve early warning for the recognition of the display of harmful light. This research provides an effective strategy for the development of a novel optoelectronic synaptic device.

Achieving High Performance Stretchable Conjugated Polymers via Donor Structure Engineering

A backbone engineering strategy is developed to tune the mechanical and electrical properties of conjugated polymer semiconductors. Four Donor-Acceptor (D-A) polymers, named PTDPPSe, PTDPPTT, PTDPPBT, and PTDPPTVT, are synthesized using selenophene (Se), thienothiophene (TT), bithiophene (BT), and thienylenevinylenethiophene (TVT) as the donors and siloxane side chain modified diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) as acceptor. The influences of the donor structure on the polymer energy level, film morphology, molecular stacking, carrier transport properties, and tensile properties are all examined. The films of PTDPPSe show the best stretchability with crack-onset-strain greater than 100%, but the worst electrical properties with a mobility of only 0.54 cm2  V-1  s-1 . The replacement of the Se donor with larger conjugated donors, that is, TT, BT, and TVT, significantly improves the mobility of conjugated polymers but also leads to reduced stretchability. Remarkably, PTDPPBT exhibits moderate stretchability with crack-onset-strain ≈50% and excellent electrical properties. At 50% strain, it has a mobility of 2.37 cm2 V-1  s-1 parallel to the stretched direction, which is higher than the mobility of most stretchable conjugated polymers in this stretching state.

Multi-stable dye-doped dual-frequency twisted nematic liquid crystal smart window

In this study, a novel, to the best of our knowledge, dye-doped dual-frequency liquid crystal multi-stable smart window is proposed. A chiral dopant with appropriate content was introduced into dye-doped dual-frequency liquid crystals to achieve an initial 180° twisted state. These liquid crystals can be switched to a nematic phase or a 360° twisted state by controlling the magnitude and frequency of the applied voltage. These nematic phase and 360° twisted states can exist stably for a long time because of the backflow effect and the anisotropic nature of the dual-frequency liquid crystal material. Due to the optical waveguide effect of dye-doped liquid crystals in the long-pitch state, the transmittance was different in nematic phase, 180°, and 360° twisted three zero-field stabilized absorption states. Finally, a multi-stable smart window is developed to switch between three zero-field stabilized absorption and scattering states.

Entangling microwaves with light

Quantum entanglement is a key resource in currently developed quantum technologies. Sharing this fragile property between superconducting microwave circuits and optical or atomic systems would enable new functionalities, but this has been hindered by an energy scale mismatch of >10⁴ and the resulting mutually imposed loss and noise. In this work, we created and verified entanglement between microwave and optical fields in a millikelvin environment. Using an optically pulsed superconducting electro-optical device, we show entanglement between propagating microwave and optical fields in the continuous variable domain. This achievement not only paves the way for entanglement between superconducting circuits and telecom wavelength light, but also has wide-ranging implications for hybrid quantum networks in the context of modularization, scaling, sensing, and cross-platform verification.

Enhancing the Elasticity of Conjugated Polymers through Precise Control of the Spacing between the Backbone and Siloxane Side-Chains

Intrinsically stretchable conjugated polymers (CPs) have extensively been studied for the development of novel flexible electronic devices. In this work, a method to control the elastic properties of CPs has been proposed via regulation of spacer length between the siloxane side-chain and the backbone. The target polymers were CP films with the structure P(mC-Si) for four different numbers of the spacer methylene groups, namely, m = 5, 6, 7, and 8. The effect of spacer length on the aggregation state as well as on electrical and elastic properties of the prepared films was then investigated. An adjustable lamellar spacing (d_L-L), in addition to improved elastic properties, was achieved as the spacer length was changed in the prepared polymer films. Moreover, P(7C-Si) has a sufficient d_L-L value of 35.77 Å, which provides enough space for inter-chain sliding to dissipate stress. This facilitated the dissipation of stress during the straining process. At a strain value of 100% in the vertical direction, the mobility of the P(7C-Si) film was 0.79 cm² V^-1 s^-1 and reduced to 84.0% of the initial value without any applied strain. The study provides clear evidence that tuning the spacer length between the silicone endgroup and backbone is an effective way to improve the intrinsic stretchability of CPs with siloxane side chains.

An observational study on the safety of COVID-19 vaccination in patients with myasthenia gravis

OBJECTIVE

There is concern that the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccine may trigger or worsen autoimmune diseases. The objective of this study was to determine the impacts of COVID-19 vaccination on symptom severity in patients with myasthenia gravis (MG).

METHODS

A total of 106 enrolled patients with MG who were vaccinated against COVID-19 were followed up, and a questionnaire was used to document in detail the exacerbation of muscle weakness after vaccination and all other uncomfortable reactions after vaccination. Demographic, clinical characteristics, medication, and vaccination data were collected by follow-up interview. The main observation outcome was whether the MG symptoms of patients were exacerbated. The definition of exacerbation is according to the subjective feeling of the patient or a 2-point increase in daily life myasthenia gravis activity score relative to before vaccination, within 30 days after vaccination.

RESULTS

Of 106 enrolled patients [median age (SD) 41.0 years, 38 (35.8%) men, 53 (50.0%) with generalized MG, 74 (69.8%) positive for acetylcholine receptor antibody, and 21 (19.8%) with accompanying thymoma], muscle weakness symptoms were stable in 102 (96.2%) patients before vaccine inoculation. Muscle weakness worsened in 10 (9.4%) people after vaccination, of which 8 patients reported slight symptom worsening that resolved quickly (within a few days). Two (1.9%) of patients showed serious symptom aggravation that required hospitalization.

CONCLUSION

Our results suggest that inactivated virus vaccines against COVID-19 may be safe for patients with MG whose condition is stable. Patients with generalized MG may be more likely to develop increased muscle weakness after vaccination.

[Expression of CD24 gene in human malignant pleural mesothelioma and its relationship with prognosis]

Objective: To investigate the expression of CD24 gene in human malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) cells and tissues, and evaluate its relationship with clinicopathological characteristics and clinical prognosis of MPM patients. Methods: In February 2021, UALCAN database was used to analyze the correlation between CD24 gene expression and clinicopathological characteristics in 87 cases of MPM patients. The TIMER 2.0 platform was used to explore the relationship between the expression of CD24 in MPM and tumor immune infiltrating cells. cBioportal online tool was used to analyze the correlation between CD24 and MPM tumor marker gene expression. RT-qPCR was used to analyze the expressions of CD24 gene in human normal pleural mesothelial cell lines LP9 and MPM cell lines NCI-H28 (epithelial type), NCI-H2052 (sarcoma type), and NCI-H2452 (biphasic mixed type). RT-qPCR was performed to detect the expressions of CD24 gene in 18 cases of MPM tissues and matched normal pleural tissues. The expression difference of CD24 protein in normal mesothelial tissue and MPM tissue was analyzed by immunohistochemistry. A Kaplan-Meier model was constructed to explore the influence of CD24 gene expression on the prognosis of MPM patients, and Cox regression analysis of prognostic factors in MPM patients was performed. Results: The CD24 gene expression without TP53 mutation MPM patients was significantly higher than that of patients in TP53 mutation (P<0.05). The expression of CD24 gene in MPM was positively correlated with B cells (r(s)=0.37, P<0.001). The expression of CD24 gene had a positive correlation with the expressions of thrombospondin 2 (THBS2) (r(s)=0.26, P<0.05), and had a negative correlation with the expression of epidermal growth factor containing fibulin like extracellular matrix protein 1 (EFEMP1), mesothelin (MSLN) and calbindin 2 (CALB2) (r(s)=-0.31, -0.52, -0.43, P<0.05). RT-qPCR showed that the expression level of CD24 gene in MPM cells (NCI-H28, NCI-H2052 and NCI-H2452) was significantly higher than that in normal pleural mesothelial LP9 cells. The expression level of CD24 gene in MPM tissues was significantly higher than that in matched normal pleural tissues (P<0.05). Immunohistochemistry showed that the expressions of CD24 protein in epithelial and sarcoma MPM tissues were higher than those of matched normal pleural tissues. Compared with low expression of CD24 gene, MPM patients with high expression of CD24 gene had lower overall survival (HR=2.100, 95%CI: 1.336-3.424, P<0.05) and disease-free survival (HR=1.800, 95%CI: 1.026-2.625, P<0.05). Cox multivariate analysis showed that compared with the biphasic mixed type, the epithelial type was a protective factor for the prognosis of MPM patients (HR=0.321, 95%CI: 0.172-0.623, P<0.001). Compared with low expression of CD24 gene, high expression of CD24 gene was an independent risk factor for the prognosis of MPM patients (HR=2.412, 95%CI: 1.291-4.492, P=0.006) . Conclusion: CD24 gene and protein are highly expressed in MPM tissues, and the high expression of CD24 gene suggests poor prognosis in MPM patients.

[A case of pulmonary aspergillus infection in underground coal mine workers]

The underground environment is dark and humid, and it is easy to breed pathogenic microorganisms. A lump in the right lung of a coal mine underground transport worker was found druing occupational health examination. CT examination showed that the lump was located in the posterior segment of the upper lobe of the right lung, with point strip calcification, liquefaction necrosis, and proximal bronchial stenosis and occlusion. MRI examination FS-T(2)WI and DWI showed "target sign", annular low signal around the central high signal, and low mixed signal around the periphery, and annular high signal in the isosignal lesions on T(1)WI. Then the pulmonary aspergillus infection was confirmed by pathology.

Amplification of Dissymmetry for Circularly Polarized Photodetection by Cooperative Supramolecular Polymerization

Circularly polarized photodetectors require chiral light absorption materials with high sensing efficiency and low costs. Here readily accessible point chirality has been introduced to dicyanostilbenes as the chiral source, facilitating remote chirality transfer to the π-aromatic core by cooperative supramolecular polymerization. The single-handed supramolecular polymers display powerful circularly polarized photodetection capability with a dissymmetry factor value as high as 0.83, superior to those of π-conjugated small molecules and oligomers. Strong chiral amplification occurs between the enantiopure sergeants and the achiral soldiers. The resulting supramolecular copolymers exhibit comparable photodetection efficiency to those of the homopolymeric ones, with a 90 % decrease in the enantiopure compound consumption. Therefore, cooperative supramolecular polymerization provides an effective yet economical avenue toward circularly polarized photodetection applications.

Report of consensus panel 7 from the 11th international workshop on Waldenström macroglobulinemia on priorities for novel clinical trials

Recent advances in the understanding of Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM) biology have impacted the development of effective novel agents and improved our knowledge of how the genomic background of WM may influence selection of therapy. Consensus Panel 7 (CP7) of the 11th International Workshop on WM was convened to examine the current generation of completed and ongoing clinical trials involving novel agents, consider updated data on WM genomics, and make recommendations on the design and prioritization of future clinical trials. CP7 considers limited duration and novel-novel agent combinations to be the priority for the next generation of clinical trials. Evaluation of MYD88, CXCR4 and TP53 at baseline in the context of clinical trials is crucial. The common chemoimmunotherapy backbones, bendamustine-rituximab (BR) and dexamethasone, rituximab and cyclophosphamide (DRC), may be considered standard-of-care for the frontline comparative studies. Key unanswered questions include the definition of frailty in WM; the importance of attaining a very good partial response or better (≥VGPR), within stipulated time frame, in determining survival outcomes; and the optimal treatment of WM populations with special needs.

Report of consensus panel 2 from the 11th international workshop on Waldenström's macroglobulinemia on the management of relapsed or refractory WM patients

The consensus panel 2 (CP2) of the 11th International Workshop on Waldenström's macroglobulinemia (IWWM-11) has reviewed and incorporated current data to update the recommendations for treatment approaches in patients with relapsed or refractory WM (RRWM). The key recommendations from IWWM-11 CP2 include: (1) Chemoimmunotherapy (CIT) and/or a covalent Bruton tyrosine kinase (cBTKi) strategies are important options; their use should reflect the prior upfront strategy and are subject to their availability. (2) In selecting treatment, biological age, co-morbidities and fitness are important; nature of relapse, disease phenotype and WM-related complications, patient preferences and hematopoietic reserve are also critical factors while the composition of the BM disease and mutational status (MYD88, CXCR4, TP53) should also be noted. (3) The trigger for initiating treatment in RRWM should utilize knowledge of patients' prior disease characteristics to avoid unnecessary delays. (4) Risk factors for cBTKi related toxicities (cardiovascular dysfunction, bleeding risk and concurrent medication) should be addressed when choosing cBTKi. Mutational status (MYD88, CXCR4) may influence the cBTKi efficacy, and the role of TP53 disruptions requires further study) in the event of cBTKi failure dose intensity could be up titrated subject to toxicities. Options after BTKi failure include CIT with a non-cross-reactive regimen to one previously used CIT, addition of anti-CD20 antibody to BTKi, switching to a newer cBTKi or non-covalent BTKi, proteasome inhibitors, BCL-2 inhibitors, and new anti-CD20 combinations are additional options. Clinical trial participation should be encouraged for all patients with RRWM.

Optically Readable Electrochromic-Based Microfiber Synaptic Device for Photonic Neuromorphic Systems

Optical synaptic devices possess great potential in both artificial intelligence and neuromorphic photonics. In this work, an optically readable electrochromic-based microfiber synaptic device was designed by the combination of a multimode fiber and an electrochromic device and using an external voltage to control the transmission of light in the fiber. The proposed synaptic device has the ability to imitate various basic functions of the biological synapses, such as synaptic plasticity, and paired-pulse facilitation (PPF), as well as the transition from short-term memory to long-term memory. Moreover, the proposed device decodes the output optical signal with the international Morse code to express the signal "HFUT" in two ways, and a 3 × 3 array composed of this device can simulate the perceptual learning process. The device can be easily prepared for a wide range of applications, and the incorporated microfibers can be replaced by planar optical waveguides, making it easy to be integrated into a more complex and versatile photonic neuromorphic system.

One-Step Preparation of Semiconductor/Dielectric Bilayer Structures for the Simulation of Flexible Bionic Photonic Synapses

Flexible synaptic devices with information sensing, processing, and storage functions are indispensable in the development of wearable artificial intelligence electronic systems. Here, a semiconductor/dielectric bilayer structure was prepared by a one-step deposition method and used for the first time in a flexible biomimetic photonic synaptic transistor device. Specifically, poly(3-hexylthiophene)-block-poly(phenyl isocyanide) with pentafluorophenyl ester (P3HT-b-PPI(5F)) was prepared as the device active layer, where the P3HT segment served as a carrier transport channel and optical gate and the PPI(5F) segment was used for charge trapping. Various biomimetic synaptic behaviors, such as excitatory postsynaptic currents, paired-pulse facilitation, and short-term/long-term memory, were successfully simulated under green light stimulation. An ultra-low energy consumption of 1.82 fJ was achieved with a greatly reduced operating voltage. Further, the "Morse-code" optical decoding was simulated using the excellent synaptic plasticity of the device. In addition, flexible synaptic devices were prepared by a one-step deposition method and can be well-affixed to arbitrary substrates. This has promising applications in the field of wearable bionic electronics.

Morbidity and risk factors for multiple noncommunicable diseases in Northern China: a cross-sectional survey

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to determine the morbidity and comorbidity of glucolipid metabolic multiple noncommunicable diseases in a Chinese natural population and associated risk factors.

SUBJECTS AND METHODS

A cross-sectional survey with randomized sampling was conducted on a typical sample of 4,002 residents (aged 26-76 years) in the Pinggu District of Beijing. They were subjected to a questionnaire survey, physical examination, and laboratory examination to collect data. Multivariable analysis was used to establish the association between various risk factors and multiple noncommunicable diseases.

RESULTS

The overall prevalence rate of chronic glucolipid metabolic noncommunicable diseases was 84.28%. The most common type of noncommunicable diseases was dyslipidemia, abdominal obesity, hypertension, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. The prevalence rate of multiple noncommunicable diseases was 79.60%. Participants with dyslipidemia were at higher risk for underlying chronic diseases. Younger men and women after menopause were more likely to have multiple noncommunicable diseases compared to their older and younger counterparts, respectively. The results of multivariate logistic regression indicated that age above 50, male sex, high household income, low education level, and harmful alcohol consumption were independent risk factors for multiple noncommunicable diseases.

CONCLUSIONS

The prevalence of chronic glucolipid metabolic noncommunicable diseases in Pinggu was higher than at the national level. Men with multiple noncommunicable diseases were younger, while women after menopause were more likely to suffer from multiple noncommunicable diseases and the prevalence rate was higher than in men. Intervention programs that aim to target risk factors by sex and region-specific are urgently needed.

A method for identifying the cause of inefficient salt-doping in organic semiconductors

Doping to enhance the electrical conductivity of organic semiconductors is not without its challenges: The efficacy of this process depends on many factors and it is not always clear how to remedy poor doping. In the case of doping with salts, one of the possible causes of poor doping is a limited yield of integer charge transfer resulting in the presence of both cations and anions in the film. The charge of such ions can severely limit the electrical conductivity, but their presence is not easily determined. Here we introduce a set of simple conductivity measurements to determine whether poor doping in the case where the dopant is a salt is due to limited integer charge transfer. By tracking how the conductivity changes over time when applying a bias voltage for an extended amount of time we can pinpoint whether unwanted ions are present in the film. Firstly, we introduce the principle of this approach by performing numerical simulations that include the movement of ions. We show that the conductivity can increase or decrease depending on the type of ions present in the film. Next, we show that the movement of these dopant ions causes a build-up of space-charge, which makes the current-voltage characteristic non-linear. Next, we illustrate how this approach may be used in practice by doping a fullerene derivative with a series of organic salts. We thus provide a tool to make the optimization of doping more rational.

Optically Programmable Circularly Polarized Photodetector

The detection of circularly polarized light (CPL) has aroused wide attention from both the scientific and industrial communities. However, from the optical activity of the chiral layer in the conventional CPL photodetectors, the sign inversion property is difficult to be achieved. As a result, great challenges arise during the preparation of miniaturized and integrated devices for tunable CPL detection applications. Along these lines, in this work, by taking advantage of the CPL-induced chirality characteristics of the achiral poly(9,9-di-n-hexylfluorene-alt-benzothiadiazole) (F6BT) and the good crystalline and electrical properties of the poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) film, an optically programmable CPL photodetector was fabricated. Interestingly, the device exhibited excellent discrimination between left- and right-handed CPL, while the maximum anisotropy factor of responsivity was 0.425. On top of that, the rigorously controlled chirality of the F6BT and the capability to be switched by the handedness of CPL was leveraged to realize the switchable detection of both L-CPL and R-CPL. Furthermore, a CPL photodetector array was fabricated, and the image processing and cryptographic characteristics were demonstrated. The proposed device configuration can find application in various scientific fields, including photonics, emission, conversion, or sensing with CPL but also is anticipated to play a key role for imaging and anticounterfeiting applications.

[Analysis of clinical characteristics and related genetic variation of juvenile myasthenia gravis]

Objective: To analyze the clinical characteristics and related genetic variation of juvenile myasthenia gravis (MG) patients. Methods: We collected the clinical data of adolescent MG patients who were treated in the Department of Neurology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University from June 2019 to May 2020. After obtaining the patient's informed consent, the blood samples were collected. The Whole Exome Sequencing (WES) was performed on peripheral blood samples. And use biological information software and SPSS 22.0 for data processing and result analysis. Results: According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 54 patients with juvenile MG were included, 28 males and 26 females. And the average age of onset was (3.79±0.89) years. Among the enrolled patients, there were 52 (96.3%) patients with ocular MG, the MG-ADL scores of 54 patients were (3.44±0.44) points, and the titer of AChR antibody was (5.88±2.45) nmol/L. Two patients had thymic hyperplasia, and 5 patients had a family history of MG.A total of 169 variant genes were found in 54 patients, of which TTN gene variants had the largest number, with a total of 17 variants (31.5%). In the TTN gene variant group, 7(41.2%) patients had eye fixation symptoms, and 4 (10.8%) patients in the non-mutation group had eye fixation symptoms. And The difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P=0.016). In addition, the synaptic nucleus envelope protein-1 (SYNE1) and the ryanodine receptor-1 (RYR1) gene variations were also found in 7 cases (13.2%), and no clear relationship between these gene variations and clinical manifestations of MG was found. Conclusions: The incidence of juvenile MG was preschoolers with no gender difference, and ocular MG was more common. The proportion of TTN gene variation in adolescent MG was higher, suggesting that this gene may be a potential therapeutic target for juvenile MG patients.

Role of Molecular Weight in the Mechanical Properties and Charge Transport of Conjugated Polymers Containing Siloxane Side Chains

The molecular weight is a key factor affecting the properties of conjugated polymers. To determine the critical molecular weights of conjugated polymers modified with siloxane side chains, poly-diketo-pyrrolopyrrole-selenophene (PTDPPSe-5Si) samples with molecular weights ranging from 20 to 350 kDa are synthesized. The critical molecular weight of the polymer is determined in the range of 60-100 kDa by testing the viscosity of the solution. When the molecular weight of the 27-60 kDa polymers is below the critical molecular weight, they exhibit a high crystallinity and low ductility. When the molecular weight of the 100 kDa polymer reaches the critical molecular weight, the crystallinity decreases, and the ductility increases. As the molecular weight increases, the polymer film also gradually changes from brittle to ductile. Furthermore, when the molecular weight of the 315 kDa polymer is much higher than the critical molecular weight, the film exhibits a significant ductility, which results in the polymer films showing no pronounced cracks after high-percentage stretching. Additionally, due to the oriented alignment of the molecular chains caused by stretching, the carrier mobility in the parallel direction becomes 2.14-fold of the initial film.

Analysis of fractured dental implant body from five different implant systems: a long-term retrospective study

The aim of this study was to perform an analysis of the incidence of implant body fracture and to identify possible risk factors. A long-term follow-up retrospective evaluation of 3477 patients who received 8588 implants from five implant systems was performed. Overall, 2810 patients who received 7502 implants, with an average follow-up of 6.9 years, were included in the analysis. The overall body fracture rate was 0.49% (37/7502), among which 32.4% (12/37) were implants with a reduced diameter. The estimated cumulative fracture rate was 1.24%. Fractures were observed in two patients with three Brånemark implants, 13 patients with 15 Nobel Replace implants, eight patients with eight Camlog implants, eight patients with 11 Ankylos implants, and none of the patients with Thommen implants. Most fractures occurred in the molar region (29/37) and in single implant-supported restorations (30/37). The results showed significant differences between splinted and unsplinted restorations (P = 0.005) and between regular and narrow diameter implants (P = 0.009). Within the limitations of this retrospective analysis, a narrow implant diameter is a potential risk factor for implant body fracture in the posterior region. Furthermore, unsplinted restorations appear to be associated with a higher rate of implant fracture.

Stable and tunable single-mode lasers based on cholesteric liquid crystal microdroplets

Although many studies on cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) microdroplet single-mode lasers are available, it has been shown that the stability and tunability of such microdroplets are difficult to achieve simultaneously. In this paper, a new, to the best of our knowledge, method is proposed for the mass and rapid preparation of stable and tunable monodisperse CLC microdroplet single-mode lasers. This is based on the formation of polymer networks on the surface of the microdroplet via interfacial polymerization and a disruption of the orderliness of the polymer networks by increasing the temperature during polymerization, which results in a single pitch inside the microdroplets. This approach enables CLC microdroplet single-mode lasers to achieve improved environmental robustness, while maintaining the same temperature tunability as the unpolymerized sample. Our method has promising future applications in integrated optics, flexible devices, and sensors.

[Clinical characteristics and outcomes of myasthenia gravis patients with double positive antibodies against acetylcholine receptor and muscle-specific tyrosine kinase]

Objective: To investigate the clinical manifestations, treatment characteristics and outcomes of myasthenia gravis (MG) dually positive for anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody (AChR-Ab) and anti-muscle-specific tyrosine kinase antibody (MuSK-Ab). Method: MG patients hospitalized in the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University from August 2017 to November 2020 were retrospectively collected. Thirty-four MuSK-Ab positive MG (MuSK-MG) patients, 11 double-antibodies positive MG (DP-MG) patients, and 80 AChR-Ab positive MG (AChR-MG) patients were included and allocated to three different groups. The clinical data of patients in the three groups were collected, and the differences of demographic characteristics, clinical manifestations and treatment outcomes between DP-MG patients and AChR-MG and MuSK-MG patients were analyzed. Result: The proportion of female and male patients in DP-MG group was 7/11 and 4/11 respectively, and the onset age of DP-MG was (41±27) years.The difference in gender distribution between DP-MG and AChR-MG groups was statistically significant (P<0.05). The proportion of extraocular muscle involvement in the DP-MG and MuSK-MG groups (8/11 and 52.9%) was lower than that in the AChR-MG group (83.8%), and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). The incidence of myasthenia crisis in DP-MG and MuSK-MG groups (54.5% and 61.8%) were higher than that in AChR-MG group (20.0%), with astatistically significant difference(P<0.05). The positive rate of neostigmine test in DP-MG and MuSK-MG groups(8/11 and 74.2%) were lower than that of AChR-MG group (96.8%), and the positive rate of low frequency repetitive nerve stimulation (RNS) in DP-MG group (5/10) was lower than that in AChR-MG group (85.1%), with statistically significant differences (all P<0.05). MuSK-Ab titer was positively correlated with the course of disease (r=0.466, P<0.05), and antibody titer decreased after symptom improvement (P<0.05). The response of patients in DP-MG and MuSK-MG groups to cholinesterase inhibitors (2/11 and 9.1%) was worse than that in the AChR-MG group (66.3%), and the incidence of side effects in the two groups (5/11 and 39.4%) was higher than that in the AChR-MG group (15.0%), with statistically significant differences (all P<0.05). There were 4 DP-MG patients underwent thymectomy, and the pathological results detected two cases of thymoma and two cases of thymic hyperplasia. Subsequent follow-up showed that 5 (5/11) DP-MG patients achieved minimal manifestation status or better status. Conclusion: The gender distribution, age of onset, pharmacological characteristics and electrophysiological examination of DP-MG patients were similar to those of MuSK-MG patients, but the severity of DP-MG patients was between that of AChR-MG and MuSK-MG patients.

Deep Ultraviolet Light Stimulated Synaptic Transistors Based on Poly(3-hexylthiophene) Ultrathin Films

Deep ultraviolet (DUV)-light-stimulated artificial synaptic devices exhibit potential applications in various disciplines including intelligent military monitoring, biological and medical analysis, flame detection, etc. Along these lines, we report here a DUV-light-stimulated synaptic transistor fabricated on a poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) ultrathin film that responds selectively to DUV light. Significantly, our devices have the ability to successfully simulate various synapse-like behaviors including excitatory postsynaptic currents (EPSCs), paired-pulse facilitation (PPF), short-term memory (STM), long-term memory (LTM), STM-to-LTM transition, and learning and forgetting behaviors. Moreover, the proposed artificial synaptic structures were also fabricated on flexible poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) substrates and also successfully simulated typical synaptic behaviors, which could be of great importance for wearable applications.

Variable-focus liquid lens based on electrically responsive fluid

In this work, an adaptive liquid lens using a novel transparent electrically responsive fluid, dibutyl adipate (DBA), is demonstrated. The DBA liquid lens with a hemispherical plano-convex shape can change its curvature according to the application of various input voltages. More specifically, when an external direct current (DC) electric field is applied to the DBA liquid, the charges that are injected from the cathode move along with the DBA molecules toward the anode and accumulate on the surface of the anode. When the DC electric field is removed, the shape of the DBA liquid is recovered to its original state. This electrostatic force induces the deformation of the DBA liquid lens within a concentric annular anode electrode. In addition, the focal length of our system is increased from a value of approximately 7.5 mm to 13.1 mm when the voltage is changed from 0 to 100 V. Interestingly, the resolution of our DBA liquid lens can reach a value of ∼28.5 lp/mm. The proposed DBA liquid lens exhibits high optical transmittance (∼95%), good thermal stability (20-100°C), simple structure, and an excellent imaging property, which implies that the DBA liquid is a promising candidate for fabricating novel adaptive liquid lenses.

Polyvinyl alcohol microlens array obtained by solvent evaporation from a confined droplet array

In this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) microlens arrays (MLAs) were prepared, and the dynamics of contact lines and contact angles during confined PVA solution droplet evaporation were investigated by in situ optical microscopy. First, hydrophobic layers patterned with hydrophilic microholes array modified substrates were prepared by photolithography and coating methods. The flowing of PVA solution on the substrates formed droplets in each microhole self-assembly. The substrate was then heated to allow evaporation of the solvent. The results showed the contact line of confined droplets pinned at the junction between the hydrophilic and hydrophobic areas during the whole evaporation process. The apparent contact angle decreased nonlinearly during evaporation. The evaporation of PVA solution droplet in each microhole followed a constant contact radius mode, meaning constant contact area and declined contact angle during evaporation. After complete solvent evaporation, PVA formed a convex shape with convergent lens character in each microhole. In sum, the obtained PVA convex arrays with uniform sizes and good focusing properties would have potential applications in wavefront sensing, infrared focal plane detection or CCD array light accumulation, laser array scanning, laser display, optical fiber coupling, and many other optical systems.

Asymmetric Hybrid Siloxane Side Chains for Enhanced Mobility and Mechanical Properties of Diketopyrrolopyrrole-Based Polymers

High performance organic field effect transistor devices based on intrinsically scalable materials are of great significance in wearable electronics. In this work, an exclusive approach is reported to rationale the carrier mobility and stretchability of the conjugate polymers (CPs) by modifying the symmetry of the side chains species. Semiconductor CPs with symmetrical alkyl side chains (P(C-C)), symmetrical siloxane side chains (P(Si-Si)), and asymmetrical silicon-carbon side chains (P(C-Si)) are synthesized to investigate the influence of these side chains on the carrier mobility and mechanical behavior. The result shows that silicon-carbon asymmetric side chains can modulate the aggregation degree of polymer chains with a coherence length of 134 Å and maintain the mobility at 0.90 cm² V^-1 s^-1 . P(C-Si) exhibits superior tensile properties that even elongation up to 100% the value of mobility retains a majority properties. The main reason is that the lowest coherence length of P(C-Si) polymer leads to an increased proportion of amorphous zones in its polymer film, which efficiently dissipates mechanical stresses. This study provides an efficient strategy for the design and synthesis of the CPs with high carrier transport properties-mechanical stability.

Tunable multi-mode laser based on robust cholesteric liquid crystal microdroplet

To date, various studies have been dedicated to the development of cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) microdroplet omnidirectional lasers. In this work, a stable and tunable multi-mode laser emission is achieved by designing a dye-doping CLC microdroplet. In such a structure, the polymer network only exists on the surface, maintaining stability while providing tunability, and due to the uneven distribution of the pitch, it leads to multi-mode laser emission. A large number of microdroplets are produced quickly via a new method based on ultrasonic separation. During the reaction, we introduce interfacial polymerization where monomers and photoinitiator are respectively distributed inside and outside the microdroplets through mutual diffusion, which enables one to make the polymer network exist on the surface instead of the interior. The obtained microdroplet-based multi-mode laser is shown to possess stability and tunability, demonstrating a great potential for flexible devices and 3D displays.

Circularly Polarized Photodetectors Based on Chiral Materials: A Review

Circularly polarized light (CPL) plays an important role in many photonic techniques, including tomographic scanning based on circular polarization ellipsometry, optical communication and information of spin, and quantum-based optical calculation and information processing. To fully exploit the functions of CPL in these fields, integrated photoelectric sensors capable of detecting CPL are essential. Photodetectors based on chiral materials can directly detect CPL due to their intrinsic optical activity, without the need to be coupled with polarizers and quarter-wave plates as in conventional photodetectors. This review summarizes the recent research progress in CPL photodetectors based on chiral materials. We first briefly introduce the CPL photodetectors based on different types of chiral materials and their working principles. Finally, current challenges and future opportunities in the development of CPL photodetectors are prospected.
