Construction and Application of Nanozyme Sensor Arrays

Compared with traditional "lock-key mode" biosensors, a sensor array consists of a series of sensing elements based on intermolecular interactions (typically hydrogen bonds, van der Waals forces, and electrostatic interactions). At the same time, sensor arrays also have the advantages of fast response, high sensitivity, low energy consumption, low cost, rich output signals, and imageability, which have attracted widespread attention from researchers. Nanozymes are nanomaterials which own enzyme-like properties. Because of the adjustable activity, high stability, and cost effectiveness of nanozymes, they are potential candidates for construction of sensor arrays to output different signals from analytes through the chemoresponse of colorants, which solves the shortcomings of traditional sensors that they cannot support multiple detection and lack universality. Recently, a sensor array based on nanozymes as nonspecific recognition receptors has attracted much more attention from researchers and has been applied to precise recognition of proteins, bacteria, and heavy metals. In this perspective, attention is given to nanozymes and the regulation of their enzyme-like activity. Particularly, the building principles and methods for sensor arrays based on nanozymes are analyzed, and the applications are summarized. Finally, the approaches to overcome the challenges and perspectives are also presented and analyzed for facilitating further research and development of nanozyme sensor arrays. This perspective should be helpful for gaining insight into research ideas within the field of nanozyme sensor arrays.

Fabrication of nano filler doped PVA/starch biodegradable composites with enhanced thermal conduction, water barrier and antimicrobial performance for food industry

In this work there was investigated the synergistic effect of the nanomaterials-the Montmorillonite (MMT) and the vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) on the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/starch composite. The composite films were prepared by the solvent casting method. The characterization of the composites showed that the addition of the MMT and the V2O5 to PVA/starch composite decreased the water solubility and water absorption capacity of the film. Both of the reinforcement materials enriched values of thermal conductivity and thermal stability of the composite. The TG/DTA and universal testing machine (UTM) analysis exhibited that MMT and V2O5 augmented the thermal robustness and tensile strength of composites and decreased the strain to break. It was also observed that greater MMT concentration accelerates mechanical strength deterioration of the film owing to agglomeration. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis reflected great change in the surface morphology of the films in the presence and absence of MMT and V2O5. This was due to the interaction amid constituents of the composite. The chemical interaction between the PVA, Starch, MMT and the V2O5 was also established via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, which revealed fluctuations in the absorbance position and intensity of the PVA/Starch. Antimicrobial activities against seven different cultures of bacteria (both-gram positive and -negative) and one fungus (Candida albicans), exposed that antimicrobial performance of the PVA amplified upon addition of the starch, MMT and V2O5, making these composites prospective candidates for the biodegradable packaging materials.

Cellulose nanocrystals boosted hydrophobically associated self-healable conductive hydrogels for the application of strain sensors and electronic devices

Currently, hydrogel-based flexible devices become hot areas for scientists in the field of electronic devices, artificial intelligence, human motion detection, and electronic skin. These devices show responses to external stimuli (mechanical signals) and convert them into electrical signals (resistance, current, and voltage). However, the applications of the hydrogel-based sensor are hampered due to low mechanical properties, high time response, low fatigue resistance, low self-healing nature, and low sensing range. Herein, a strain sensing conductive hydrogel constructed from the CNCs (cellulose nanocrystal) reinforced, in which acrylamide and butyl acrylate work as hydrophilic and hydrophobic monomers respectively. The incorporation of CNCs in the polymeric system has a direct effect on their mechanical properties. The hydrogel having a high amount of CNCs (C4), its fracture stress and fracture strain reached 371.2 kPa and 2108 % respectively as well as self-healing of C4 hydrogel Broke at 499 % strain and bore 197 kPa stress. The elastic behavior of the hydrogels was confirmed by the rheological parameter frequency sweep and strain amplitude. Besides this our designed hydrogel shows an excellent response to deformation with conductivity 420 mS m-1, shows response to small strain (10 %) and large (400 %) strain, and has excellent anti-fatigue resistance with continuous stretching for 700 s at 300 % strain, with 140 msec response time, and gauge factor 7.4 at 750 % strain. The C4 hydrogel can also work as electronic skin when it is applied to different joints like the finger, elbow, neck, etc. The prepared hydrogel can also work as an electronic pen when it is worn to a plastic pen cover.

Synthesis and characterization of copper nanoparticle-based hydrogel and its applications in catalytic reduction and adsorption of basic blue 3

Most of the dyes used in various industries are non-biodegradable and carcinogenic in nature. Therefore, elimination of dyes from textile wastes is mandatory to safeguard the life of human, aquatic animals and aquatic plants. In this connection an effective and eco-friendly hydrogel was synthesized from acrylamide, cellulose, clay, and copper salt abbreviated as AMPS(PHE-Ce)/MC-Cu. The fabricated hydrogel was used as sorbent and catalyst for the adsorption and catalytic reduction of basic blue 3. SEM analysis showed granular texture with small holes or cracks which is basic criteria for an adsorbent surface. The results showed that the BET surface area and the Langmuir surface area were, respectively, 27.87 and 40.32 m2/g. The FTIR analysis confirmed the synthesis of hydrogel, as is evident from peaks at 3500, 3439, 2996, 2414, and 1650 cm-1, which indicated the presence of OH or NH, -C-O-C-, CH3, (C[bond, double bond]O), C-N bonds correspondingly. Thermal stability was confirmed by TGA analysis where weight loss in three stages has been observed. The presence of copper was confirmed through EDX (5.02%) indicating the incorporation of cupper nanoparticles in hydrogel surface. The high adsorption capability of 1590 mg/g as recorded for basic blue-3 dye indicates it to be an efficient adsorbent. The swelling behavior characterized by Fickian diffusion up to 7898% clearly indicated significant swelling. Pseudo 2nd-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm models were more fit in unfolding kinetics and isothermal data indicating chemisorption with monolayer sorption as evident from the high R2 values (0.999) of each model. Thermodynamics considerations indicated that the adsorption process is endothermic with a positive enthalpy value of 1371.32 Jmol-1. The positive entropy value of 19.70 J/mol.K signifies a higher degree of disorder at the solid-liquid interface. The findings provided a valuable insights into the hydrogel's capacity to adsorb cationic dyes and reduce them catalytically, pointing towards its potential applications in addressing environmental challenges.

Synthesis of Poly(GG-co-AAm-co-MAA), a Terpolymer Hydrogel for the Removal of Methyl Violet and Fuchsin Basic Dyes from Aqueous Solution

A novel adsorbent designated as terpolymer hydrogel (gellan gum-co-acrylamide-co-methacrylic acid) was prepared by free radical polymerization of gellan gum (GG), methacrylic acid (MAA), and acrylamide (AAm) using N,N-methylene bis-acrylamide (MBA) as cross-linker and ammonium per sulfate (APS) as the initiator of the reaction. The synthesized gel was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and was used for the adsorptive removal of methyl violet (MV) and Fuchsin Basic (FB) dyes from aqueous solution. The effect of temperature, contact time, pH, and concentration on them under the study adsorption process was evaluated. Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models were found to be best in fitting the isothermal and kinetics data. The water diffusion and % swelling of hydrogel were studied at various pH in distilled water and at neutral pH in tap water. The diffusion was found to be of Fickian type with a maximum swelling of 5132%. The maximum adsorption capacity was 233 mg/g against MV and 200 mg/g against FB dyes. The swelling and adsorption were pH dependent and increased with increase in pH. The enthalpy, Gibbs free energy, and entropy changes of adsorption for both the dyes indicated the adsorption process to be exothermic, feasible, and spontaneous. The hydrogel was successfully regenerated using acetone and distilled water for five cycles and still, its dye removal efficiency was 80% of its original value. The poly(GG-co-AAm-co-MAA) hydrogel successfully removed the selected dyes from water and could thus be used as an efficient alternative sorbent for cationic dye removal from aqueous solutions.

Novel hydrogel poly (GG-co-acrylic acid) for the sorptive removal of the color Rhodamine-B from contaminated water

Textile effluent's treatment is highly desired due to the presence of hazardous, water-soluble and non-biodegradable dyes that not only have harmful effect on the environment but on living beings as well. Treatment of these pollutants by sorption through biosorbents is considered to be a best method of choice due to greener nature of the processes. In this connection hydrogel sorbents might be an intriguing option due to its straightforward application, great efficacy, easy synthesis, rapid turnaround, and potential of recycling. Herein, novel hydrogel was prepared using Gellan Gum and acrylic acid (GG-co-AAc) which were then characterized by instrumental techniques like UV/visible and FTIR spectroscopy, SEM, EDX and XRD. The anionic hydrogel's adsorption capacity, swelling behavior, and sorption potential were determined using Rhodamine-B as potential environmental pollutant. The hydrogel exhibited an impressive adsorption capacity of 1250 mg/g. Swelling experiments were performed in Milli-Q distilled water at different pH levels, reaching maximum swelling of 3230% after 23 h as determined through Fickian diffusion. At pH 7, the anionic hydrogel's sorption potential was thoroughly studied in the subsequent experiments. The adsorption process was found to follow the Langmuir isotherm, indicating a monolayer adsorption mechanism supported by higher R2 values compared to the Freundlich isotherm. Thermodynamic analysis revealed the exothermic nature of the adsorption process, with a negative enthalpy value of -11371 KJmol-1 and negative entropy value of -26.39 Jmol-1K-1, suggesting a less ordered system. These findings provide valuable insights into the adsorption characteristics and potential applications of the synthesized anionic hydrogel.

Guar gum reinforced conductive hydrogel for strain sensing and electronic devices

Hydrophobically associated conductive hydrogels got great attention due to their excellent properties like stretchability, energy dissipation mechanism, and strain sensor. But hydrophobically associated hydrogels have poor mechanical properties and time response to external stimuli. To enhance the mechanical properties and response to stimuli, Acrylamide- co-Butyl acrylate/Gum based conductive hydrogels were prepared. SDS works as a cross-linker and micelle-forming agent while NaCl makes hydrogel as conductive. The results show that our % strain sensing reached up to 400 %, and fracture stress and fracture strain reached to 0.5 MPa and 401 % respectively. Besides this, it's having an excellent response to continuous stretching and unstretching multiple cycles without any fracture up to 180 s and an excellent time response of 190 s. The conductivity of the hydrogel was 0.20 Sm-1. The hydrophobic hydrogels showed a clear and quick response to human motions like finger, wresting, writing, speaking, etc. Interestingly, our prepared hydrogels can detect the mood of the human face. Similarly, the hydrogels were found efficient in bridging the surface of electronic devices with human skin. This indicates that our prepared hydrogels can monitor human body motion and will replace the existing materials used in strain sensors in the near future.

Evaluating groundwater nitrate and other physicochemical parameters of the arid and semi-arid district of DI Khan by multivariate statistical analysis

Nitrate as an important water pollutant, causing eutrophication was analyzed in Pakistan at different water sources (hand pump (HP), bore hole (BH) and tube well (TW)) to assess the contamination level caused by NO₃^-. NO₃^- concentrations in the HP water samples were 31 mg L^-1 to 59 mg L^-1, in BH 20 mg L^-1 to 79 mg L^-1 while in TW water samples it was between 29 to 55 mg L^-1. The association of NO₃^- with other selected parameter in groundwater can be determined by using statistical approaches. Different physicochemical parameters (pH, electrical conductivity (EC), temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO)) were studied in groundwater samples of the research district. The Pearson correlation coefficient (r) for groundwater characteristics were calculated. Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) was used to categorize samples based on their groundwater quality similarities and to find links between groundwater quality factors. The key relationship of the groundwater for HP samples on EC and TDS (r = 1) had a great correlation, while all other parameters correlations were lower (r = 0.40), BH's parameters on WT and WSD (r = 0.57), WT and pH (r = 0.57), EC and DO (r = 0.50), DO and TDS (0.50), EC and TDS (r = 1) had a quite high correlation, while all other parameters correlations were less than (r = 0.40), on the other hand, tube well parameters on TDS and EC (r = 1) had a perfect correlation, DO and pH (r = 0.75) parameters correlations were less than (r = 0.40).

Cellulose nanocrystals boosted hydrophobic association in dual network polymer hydrogels as advanced flexible strain sensor for human motion detection

Conductive hydrogels attract the attention of researchers worldwide, especially in the field of flexible sensors like strain and pressure. These flexible materials have potential applications in the field of electronic skin, soft robotics, energy storage, and human motion detection. However, its practical application is limited due to low stretchability, high hysteresis energy, low conductivity, long-range strain sensitivity, and high response time. It's still a challenging job to endow all these properties in a single hydrogel network. In the present work, cellulose nano crystals (CNCs) reinforced hydrophobically associated gels were developed using APS as a source of radical polymerization, acrylamide and lauryl methacrylate were used as a monomer. CNCs reinforced the hydrophobically associated hydrogels through hydrogen bonding to retain the hydrogel's network structure. Hydrogels consist of dual crosslinking, which demonstrate exceptional mechanical performance (fracture stress and strain, toughness, and Young's modulus). The low hysteresis energy (10.9 kJm^-3) and high conductivity (22.97 mS/cm) make the hydrogels a strong candidate for strain sensors with high sensitivity (GF = 19.25 at 700% strain) and a fast response time of 200 ms. Cyclic performance was also investigated up to 300 continuous cycles. After 300 cycles, the hydrogels were still stable and no considerable change was observed. These hydrogels are capable of sensing different human motions like wrist, finger bending, and neck (up-down and straight and right/left motion of neck). The hydrogels also demonstrate changes in current in response to swallowing, different speaking words, and writing different alphabets. These results suggest that our prepared materials can sense different small and large human motions, and also could be used in any electronic device where strain sensing is required.

Effects of Cu2+/Zn2+ on the electrochemical performance of polyacrylamide hydrogels as advanced flexible electrode materials

Previously, solid-state electrode materials have been utilized for the fabrication of energy storage devices; however, their application is impeded by their brittle nature and ion mobility problems. To address issues faced in such a modern era where energy saving and utility is of prior importance, a novel approach has been applied for the preparation of electrode materials based on polyacrylamide hydrogels embedded with reduced graphene oxide and transition metals, namely, Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺. The fabricated hydrogel exhibits high electrical properties and flexibility that make it a favorable candidate to be used in energy storage devices, where both elastic and electrical properties are desired. For the first time, a multi-cross-linked polyacrylamide hydrogel was constructed and compared in the presence of other electro-active materials such as reduced graphene oxide and transition metals. Polyacrylamide hydrogels embedded with reduced graphene oxide demonstrate excellent electrical properties such as specific capacitance, least impedance, low phase angle shift and AC conductivity of 22.92 F g^-1, 2115 Ω, 2.88° and 0.67 μδ m^-1 respectively as compared to Cu²⁺- and Zn²⁺-loaded hydrogels, which block all available active sites causing an increase in impedance with a parallel decrease in capacitance. The capacitance retention and coulombic efficiency calculated were 88.22% and 77.23% respectively, indicating high stability up to 150 cycles at 0.1 A g^-1. Storage moduli obtained were 10.52 kPa, which infers the more elastic nature of the hydrogel loaded with graphene oxide than that of other synthesized hydrogels.

The physicochemical and DNA binding studies of some medicinal compounds in solutions

To understand the expected mode of action, the physicochemical study on the solution properties of medicinal compounds and their interaction with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), under varying experimental conditions, is of prime importance. The present research work illustrates the physicochemical study and interaction of certain medicinal compounds such as; Levofloxacin, Ciprofloxacin, and Ibuprofen with DNA. Density, viscosity and surface tension measurements have been performed in order to determine, in a systematic manner, the physicochemical, volumetric and thermodynamic properties of these compounds; and most of these parameters have shown different behavior with varying concentration of solution, temperature of the medium and chemical nature/structure of the compound. In addition, these drugs showed a spontaneous surface-active and association behavior in aqueous solutions. The flow behavior, surface properties, volumetric behavior and solute–solvent interaction of these drugs were prominently influenced by experimental variables and addition of DNA to their solutions. UV–Visible spectroscopy was also used to examine the interaction of these drugs with DNA in aqueous media in detail. Calculated values of binding constants (Kb) for all complexes of drug-DNA are positive, indicating a fruitful binding process. It is seen that a smaller Kb value reflects weaker binding of the drug with DNA and vise versa. Due to the difference in the chemical structure of drugs the values of binding constant are different for various drug-DNA complexes and follow the order Kb(Levofloxacin-DNA) > Kb(Ciprofloxacin-DNA) > Kb(Ibuprofen-DNA). On the basis of spectral changes and Kb it can be said that the binding of all these drugs with DNA may be of physicochemical nature and the dominating binding force be of hydrogen bonding between oxygen of drugs and hydrogen of DNA units and the drug having more oxygen atoms showed stronger binding ability. The data further suggest a limited possibility of chemical type attachment of these drugs with DNA.

Effect of MWCNTs Functionalization on Thermal, Electrical, and Ammonia-Sensing Properties of MWCNTs/PMMA and PHB/MWCNTs/PMMA Thin Films Nanocomposites

Partially biodegradable polymer nanocomposites Poly(3-Hydroxybutyrate) (PHB)/MultiwalledCarbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs)/Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) (PMMA)and non-biodegradable nanocomposites (MWCNTs/PMMA) were synthesized, and their thermal, electrical, and ammonia-sensing properties were compared. MWCNTs were chemically modified to ensure effective dispersion in the polymeric matrix. Pristine MWCNTs (p-MWCNTs) were functionalized with –COOH (a-MWCNTs) and amine groups (f-MWCNTs). Then, PHB grafted multiwalled carbon nanotubes (g-MWNTs) were prepared by a ‘grafting to’ technique. The p-MWCNTs, a-MWCNTs, f-MWCNTs, and g-MWCNTs were incorporated into the PMMA matrix and PMMA/PHB blend system by solution mixing. The PHB/f-MWCNTs/PMMA blend system showed good thermal properties among all synthesized nanocomposites. Results from TGA and dTGA analysis for PHB/f-MWCNTs/PMMA showed delay in T₅ (about 127 °C), T₅₀ (up to 126 °C), and T_max (up to 65 °C) as compared to neat PMMA. Higher values of frequency capacitance were observed in nanocomposites containing f-MWCNTs and g-MWCNTs as compared to nanocomposites containing p-MWCNTs and a-MWCNTs. This may be attributed to their excellent interaction and good dispersion in the polymeric blend. Analysis of ammonia gas-sensing data showed that PHB/g-MWCNTs/PMMA nanocomposites exhibited good sensitivity (≈100%) and excellent repeatability with a constant response. The calculated limit of detection (LOD) is 0.129 ppm for PHB/g-MWCNTs/PMMA, while that of all other nanocomposites is above 40 ppm.

Swelling and kinetic investigations of basic blue-3 sorption by polyacrylamide/Gum Arabic hybrid hydrogel in aqueous medium

Removal of noxious dyes from waste water is highly desirable for the safety of humans, aquatic life and natural environment. The issue was addressed in the present work by one pot fabrication of polyacrylamide/Gum Arabic (pAAm/GA) composite hydrogel which was applied as sorbent for basic blue-3 (BB3) eradication. The synthesis of the material was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transformed Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). Besides, the same techniques also evidenced BB3 uptake by the hydrogel. In distilled water, the swelling capacities of the hydrogel was investigated at pH 7 and the nature of water diffusion into the hydrogel was probed from the resultant data. The composite hydrogel reached equilibrium point in 24 h after which no appreciable water absorption occurred. The adsorption of BB3 by the hybrid material was comprehensively investigated which involved the effect of contact time, temperature and pH on the sorption capacity of the hybrid sorbent. The obtained data fitted well into pseudo second order kinetic model and the adsorption took place in three consecutive kinetic phases. Moreover, sorption thermodynamics revealed non spontaneous and endothermic nature of BB3 sorption accompanied with increase in degree of order.

Synthesis, characterization, and biological screening of metal nanoparticles loaded gum acacia microgels

We report novel gum acacia (GA) based microgels composites for multifunctional biomedical application. High yield of spherical GA microgels particles within 5-50 μm size range was obtained via crosslinking the polymer in the reverse micelles of surfactant-sodium bis (2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (NBSS) in gasoline medium. The prepared microgels were then utilized for in situ silver (Ag) and cobalt (Co) nanoparticles (NPs) synthesis to subsequently produce GNAg and GNCo nanocomposite microgels, respectively. Ag and Co NPs of particle of almost less than 40 nm sizes were homogenously distributed over the matrices of the prepared microgels, and therefore, negligible agglomeration effect was observed. Pristine GA microgels, and the nanocomposite microgels were thoroughly characterized through FTIR, DSC, TGA, XRD, SEM, EDS, and TEM. The well-characterized pristine GA microgels and the nanocomposite microgels were then subjected to multiple in vitro bioassays including antioxidant, antidiabetic, and antimicrobial activities as well as biocompatibility investigation. Our results demonstrate that the prepared nanocomposites in particular GNAg microgels exhibited excellent biomedical properties as compared to pristine GA microgels. Among the prepared samples, GNAg nanocomposites were highly active against Fusarium oxysporum and Aspergillus niger that show 47.73% ± 0.25 inhibition and 32.3% ± 2.0 with IC-50 of 220 μg ml^-1 and 343 μg ml^-1 , respectively. Moderate antidiabetic activity was also observed for GNAg nanocomposites with considerable inhibition of 15.34% ± 0.20 and 14.7% ± 0.44 for both α-glucosidase and α-amylase, respectively. Moreover, excellent antioxidant properties were found for both the GNAg and GNCo nanocomposites as compared to pristine GA microgels. A remarkable biocompatible nature of the nanocomposites in particular GNAg makes the novel GA composites, to be exploited for diverse biomedical applications.

Investigating the thermodynamic and kinetics properties of acid phosphatase extracted and purified from seedlings of Chenopodium murale

Herein acid phosphatase isoenzyme was extracted from the C. murale seedlings. The purification was accomplished by chromatographic techniques and passing through DEAE-cellulose and Sephadex G-100 column. The specific activity of acid phosphatase 5.75 U/mg of protein was obtained with 66 purification fold 15.8% yield and molecular mass was 29 kDa with very faint bands corresponding to 18 kDa and 14 kDa. The maximal activity at pH 5.0 and 50 °C best illustrated by first order kinetics. When temperature was raised (55 °C to 75 °C), the deactivation rate constant was increased from 0.001 to 0.014 min^-1, while half-life was decreased from 693 to 49 min^-1. The results of activity collected at different temperature were then used to estimate, activation energy of hydrolysis reaction (Ea = 47.59 kJmol^-1). A high Z-value (18.86 °C min^-1) was obtained indicating a less sensitivity towards temperatures. The residual activity examinations were carried out from 55 °C to 75 °C and assessing the Deactivation Energy (Ed 116.39 kJmol^-1), Enthalpy change (ΔH° 113.55kJmol^-1), Entropy change (ΔS° 110.33kJmol^-1) and change in Gibbs free energy (ΔG° 10.02 kJmol^-1). Taken together, thermodynamic parameters confirm the high stability of enzyme and show potential commercial applicability.

Synthesis, characterization and electrochemistry of triethyl ammonium sulphate ionic liquid

Protic ionic liquids (PILs) being intrinsic proton conducting ionic species are considered as potential green electrolytes for study of electrocatalytic reactions and for fabrication of IL-based fuel cells (FCs) and batteries. We have prepared a sulfate anion based protic ionic liquid (PIL), triethylammonium sulfate (TEAS) through a reaction involving transfer of proton from H2SO4 to triethylamine (TEA). 1H NMR and FT-IR spectroscopic techniques were employed for confirmation of the synthesis of TEAS and water content of the PIL was quantified using coulometric Karl–Fischer (KF) titration. 1H NMR and FT-IR analysis confirm the synthesis of the PILs and KF-titration analysis shows that TEAS contains 1.43 w/w % water. Electrical conductivity of TEAS was determined at different temperatures showing that the PIL has excellent ionic conductivity that enhances with rise in temperature of the medium. The temperature dependence of the conductivity of the PIL follows the Arrhenius equation as the logσ versus 1/T plot is linear. The electrochemical windows (EWs) of the electrolyte were found using cyclic voltammetry at Pt and Au working electrodes and found to decrease with increase in temperature of the medium. The data revealed that the surfaces of the electrodes are covered with oxide layers due to oxidation of trace water (1.43 w/w %) present in the PIL. The oxide layers growth increase and their onset potential moves to less positive values as the temperature of the PILs is increased. The data was compared with the literature and would be helpful in understanding of the surface electrochemistry in this neoteric medium for being used as potential electrolyte in industry for various electrochemical applications.

Synthesis of copolymeric hydrogels of acrylamide and 2-(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and its use for the adsorption of basic blue 3 dye

Homo and copolymer hydrogels of acrylamide and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) were synthesized by free radical addition polymerization. The synthesized hydrogels were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermal gravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TGA/DTA). The hydrogels were used as an adsorbent for the removal of toxic azo dye Basic blue 3 (BB3) in aqueous medium. To check the swelling property the equilibrium swelling of these synthesized hydrogels were established within 24 h. The effect of pH, time and temperature in the process of BB3 adsorption was studied in detail. The maximum adsorption of BB3 on hydrogels was occurred at pH 9 with 60 min equilibration time. The kinetic data were applied to pseudo first order, pseudo second order and intraparticle diffusion model. The obtained results indicate that the adsorption process, obey pseudo second order kinetics and is diffusion control. The negative value of ΔS and positive values of ΔG and ΔH showed that the adsorption process is orderliness, non-spontaneous and endothermic respectively in nature. The hydrogels were successfully regenerated from the mixture and used again in several steps without a reduction in their efficiency.

Synthesis and Rheological Survey of Xanthan Gum Based Terpolymeric Hydrogels

Graft copolymerization technique was used to synthesize novel biopolymer based terpolymeric hydrogels of xanthan gum (Gx), acrylic acid and N-Isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM) by using chemical crosslinker N,N′-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA), ammonium persulphate (APS) as a redox initiator and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) for particle size stabilization. The synthesized hydrogels were characterized through FT-IR and SEM techniques, which confirmed the hydrogels formation. Detailed rheology was investigated through applying various rheological models like Bingham model, modified Bingham model and Ostwald power law model to the hydrogels which revealed that the hydrogels were appeared to have shear thinning, non-Newtonian behavior and more elastic. Modified Bingham model provided best fit understanding to our prepared materials. The maximum activation energy (Ea) 13.87 kJ/mol was obtained for composition having more Gx compared to others, showing a strong relationship with viscosity. The hydrogels has potential to find applications in food industry, cosmetics, degradation of dyes and removal of heavy metals from waste water.

Rheological Investigation of GO Doped p(APTMACl) Composite Hydrogel

The aim of the present work is an approach towards the exploration of comprehension of rheological work on polymer composites synthesized by ex-situ dispersion of graphene oxide (GO) in poly(3-acrylamidopropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (APTMACl) cationic hydrogel template. FTIR was carried out for confirmation of polymer synthesis and existence of GO in hydrogel network. The rheological investigation via frequency sweep curve (shear measurement) and oscillatory sweep (dynamic mechanical analysis) at different temperature 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 °C was performed. The storage (G′) and loss (G′′) moduli as a function of angular frequency, yield stress, tangent loss, damping factor and retention property were also studied to confirm the visco-elastomeric nature of the GO@p(APTMACl) composite and their semi solid response at different range of temperature. Various rheological models like Bingham model, modified Bingham model and Ostwald’s power law were applied. The temperature dependency was further tested via Arrhenius-Frenkel-Eyring equation. The sample showed best fitting in the modified Bingham model, which justified the pseudo plastic semi solid behavior of GO@p(APTMACl) composite within the linear visco-elastic region (LVER). All the properties from rheological study show best mechanical property and make the composite hydrogel good for drug delivery and for other environmental applications.

Pyrolysis of polypropylene over zeolite mordenite ammonium: kinetics and products distribution

The present work reveals pyrolysis kinetics of polypropylene (PP) over zeolite modernite using thermogravimetry. The activation energy (Ea) and frequency factor (A) were calculated applying Ozawa Flynn Wall, Coats-Redfern, and Tang Wanjun methods. The Ea calculated by all the methods were found in accord with each other. The pyrolysis was also performed in a salt bath in the temperature range 350°C–390°C. It was observed that a temperature of 370°C is the optimum temperature for maximum liquid fuel production. Moreover, the amount of solid residue decreases with the rise in temperature. Similarly, gas fraction also shows linear relationship with temperature. The condensable and noncondensable fractions were collected and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The fuel properties of the oil produced were assessed and compared with commercial fuel. These properties agree well with fossil fuel and therefore have potential applications as fuel.

Preparation and Physicochemical Characterization of Dual Responsive and Chemically Modified Cellulose Based Copolymer Hydrogels

This research work is based on the preparation and physicochemical characterization of Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)–Cellulose–Poly(Acrylic acid) [PNIPAAm–Cellulose–PAAc] based terpolymer hydrogels. The free radical polymerization reaction was initiated by the presence of ammonium persulphate (APS) and crosslinking between different monomers was occurring through N,Nl- Methylene bis-acrylamide (MBA). Confirmation of polymerization process was done by FT-IR and UV-visible spectroscopy. The prepared hydrogels were further characterized by different physicochemical techniques like rheology, Ostwald viscometry and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The effect of external stimuli like temperature, pH and composition of the samples on the physicochemical behavior was also carried out by dynamic rheology, swelling measurement and DLS. Various other properties like elasticity, shear stress, shear strain, loss modulus, storage modulus and complex viscosity was investigated by rheology. DLS was used to trace the size and swelling behavior of the samples. From the results obtained it was found that all the microgel samples are stimuli responsive and most of their physicochemical properties were prominently varying while changing the internal as well as the external experimental variable. These changes in physicochemical behavior of the gel can be attributed to two possibilities; the change in the hydrophobic character of gel (PNIPAAm) with temperature and also to the weakening of intermolecular hydrogen bonds with increase in temperature. As a result of this the PAA chains may undergo a transition from a compact conformation to an expanded coil conformation, resulting in the swelling of the hydrogels.

Decomposition Kinetics of Levofloxacin: Drug-Excipient Interaction

The present study is focused on the thermal decomposition of Levofloxacin in the absence and presence of different excipients (sodium starch glycolate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose and lactose using Thermogravimetry (TG). Fourier Transform Infra Red Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) were used to study the possible drug – excipient interaction. It has been shown that the interaction of the first three excipients (sodium starch glycolate, magnesium stearate, and microcrystalline cellulose) with Levofloxacin is physical in nature. Lactose was shown to decrease the degradation temperature to a maximum extent. This indicates a strong chemical interaction between the drug and lactose. The activation energies in the former case were found almost similar but deviated considerably in the latter case.

The Effect of Low Weight Percent Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes on the Dielectric Properties of Non-Conducting Polymer/Ceramic Nanocomposites for Energy Storage Materials

Here in this study timing saving, easy and cost effective methods has been applied for fabricating the dielectric energy storage materials. Ceramic nanoparticles (FLZC’s) have been successfully synthesized by Sol-Gel method and its nanocomposites with non-conducting polymers (PVP, PVA, PEG, PEO) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT’s) by one-pot blending technique. Energy dispersive x-ray diffraction (EDX), x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA/DTA), AC impedance analyzer and dielectric properties were determined for all the samples. Dielectric properties showed good agreement with that of energy storage substances for electronic device fabrication. High dielectric constant was achieved when 0.5 wt% MWCNT’s was added to FLZC’s/MWCNT’s/Polymer nanocomposites. The stability and performance of the nanocomposites were dependent on the type of polymer used. These preparation materials can be employed in functional materials, such as high charge-storage capacitors, electrostriction for artificial muscles and smart skins etc.

Nickel Oxide-incorporated Polyaniline/Polyvinyl Alcohol Composite for Enhanced Antibacterial Activity

The development of biocompatible, cost effective and more efficient materials to control or inhibit the growth of microorganisms in necessary to fight against resistant microbes. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of nickel oxide-incorporated polyaniline/polyvinyl alcohol (PANI/PVA/NiOx) composite material by single-step polymerization and its application as antibacterial agent. The composite films were characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). UV-Vis spectra revealed the enhancement in absorption properties of PANI/PVA/NiOx with optimum 5% incorporation of NiOx. TGA results indicated slightly enhanced thermal stability of the PANI/PVA/NiOx composite film as compared to PANI/PVA. FTIR spectra for composites revealed the existence of NiOx in polymers. However the crystallinity of PANI/PVA was not much affected. The antibacterial activity of the prepared composites was examined against four different gram negative bacteria, Salmonella, Shigella, Pseudomonas and Escherichia coli (E. coli). The composite exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against E. coli, Salmonella and Shigella while pseudomonas showed some resistance. Based on the results, PANI/PVA/ NiOx (5%) composite showed the highest activity against the tested bacterial strains, thus showing its potential to be used as an effective antibacterial agent.

Zwitterionic superabsorbent polymer hydrogels for efficient and selective removal of organic dyes

A novel zwitterionic superabsorbent polymer hydrogel [ZI-SAH] was synthesized by free radical polymerization and used for the removal of crystal violet (CV) and congo red (CR) from an aqueous medium.

Fabrication of stable superabsorbent hydrogels for successful removal of crystal violet from waste water

Smart superabsorbent hydrogels consisting of acrylamide/sodium alginate (AS), acrylamide/sodium alginate/2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulphonic acid (ASA_x, x = amount of AMPS) were synthesized via free radical polymerization. The swelling behavior of the hydrogels was studied in distilled and tap water. It was found that by increasing the amount of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulphonic (AMPS) in the hydrogel composition, the hydrogel swelling capability was enhanced from 3685% for AS to 4797% for ASA₁ and 21 175% for ASA₂ in distilled water, while in tap water this property varied from 915% for AS to 988% and 1588% for ASA₁ and ASA₂, respectively. All the samples were found to be efficient for the removal of crystal violet from aqueous solution. The absorption efficiency and % removal increased from 1.78 mg g⁻¹ and 62.6% for AS to 3.31 mg g⁻¹ and 75% for ASA₁ and 3.34 mg g⁻¹ and 82.1% for ASA₂. The effects of pH, contact time, initial dye concentration and hydrogel dosage on the removal process were studied in detail. The mechanism of CV removal occurs according to the Freundlich isotherm following pseudo second order kinetics. The thermodynamic parameters showed that the sorption process is spontaneous and endothermic in nature. The superabsorbent hydrogels were regenerated and reused in six consecutive cycles with 5% decrease in efficiency.

One-Pot Synthesis and Rheological Study of Cationic Poly (3-acrylamidopropyltrimethyl ammoniumchloride) P(APTMACl) Polymer Hydrogels

The main objective of this research work is to explore the complete and extensive rheological studies of cationic poly (3-acrylamidopropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride) P(APTMACl) hydrogel, prepared by free radical polymerization method at room temperature. Hydrogel was characterized by various techniques such as SEM, FTIR and TGA, whereas rheological properties of synthesized hydrogel were obtained using frequency sweep and frequency curve analysis in different temperature range. Storage modulus (G′) and loss modulus (G′′) were investigated as a function of angular frequencies and shear stress at various temperatures. Rheological models like Bingham plastic model, modified Bingham and Ostwald power law were applied to understand the rheological performance of the gels. Flow curves obtained at different temperatures indicate that P(APTMACl) hydrogel shows a non-Newtonian pseudo plastic behavior. All results concluded that rheology is a powerful tool to study the complete visco-elastic behavior of polymer hydrogel for multiple applications.
