Abstract
The development of new approaches for the synthesis of new bioactive heterocyclic derivatives is of the utmost importance for pharmaceutical industry. In this regard, the present study reports the green synthesis of new benzaldazine and ketazine derivatives via the condensation of various carbonyl compounds (aldehydes and ketones with the 3-(1-hydrazineylideneethyl)-1H-indole using the grinding method with one drop of acetic acid). Various spectroscopic techniques were used to identify the structures of the synthesized derivatives. Furthermore, the anticancer activities of the reported azine derivatives were evaluated against colon, hepatocellular, and breast carcinoma cell lines using the MTT technique with doxorubicin as a reference medication. The findings suggested that the synthesized derivatives exhibited potential anti-tumor activities toward different cell lines. For example, 3c, 3d, 3h, 9, and 13 exhibited interesting activity with an IC50 value of 4.27-8.15 µM towards the HCT-116 cell line as compared to doxorubicin (IC50 = 5.23 ± 0.29 µM). In addition, 3c, 3d, 3h, 9, 11, and 13 showed excellent cytotoxic activities (IC50 = 4.09-9.05 µM) towards the HePG-2 cell line compared to doxorubicin (IC50 = 4.50 ± 0.20 µM), and 3d, 3h, 9, and 13 demonstrated high potency (IC50 = 6.19-8.39 µM) towards the breast cell line (MCF-7) as compared to the reference drug (IC50 = 4.17 ± 0.20 µM). The molecular interactions between derivatives 3a-h, 7, 9, 11, 13, and the CDK-5 enzyme (PDB ID: 3IG7) were studied further using molecular docking indicating a high level of support for the experimental results. Furthermore, the drug-likeness analysis of the reported derivatives indicated that derivative 9 (binding affinity = -8.34 kcal/mol) would have a better pharmacokinetics, drug-likeness, and oral bioavailability as compared to doxorubicin (-7.04 kcal/mol). These results along with the structure-activity relationship (SAR) of the reported derivatives will pave the way for the design of additional azines bearing indole with potential anticancer activities.

Abstract
The development of synthetic strategies for functional building units plays a central role in supramolecular chemistry. Both porphyrin and crown ethers have attracted the attention of researchers worldwide owing to their unique properties. It is envisioned that the integration of the two molecules will result in hybrid materials with potential applications in many fields. In the present study, a new porphyrin derivative 3 appended with four 18-crown-6 (18C6) ether moieties was synthesized through the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of boronic ester porphyrin 1 and 4-bromobenzo-18-crown-6 2 in 80% yield. Porphyrin 3 was fully characterized by 1H/[Formula: see text]C NMR spectroscopy and high resolution mass spectrometry. The tendency of the 18C6 to form host-guest complexes with ammonium cations was exploited to assemble cation responsive hybrid material of porphyrin 3 and ammonium immobilized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs). Furthermore, the potential application of the 3/MSNs conjugate as a cation-responsive drug delivery vehicle was investigated in solution by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies.

Abstract
Taxol is one of the potential anticancer drugs; however, the yield of Taxol and its cytotoxicity are common challenges. Thus, manipulating the Taxol biosynthetic pathway from endophytic fungi, in addition to chemical modification with biocompatible polymers, is the challenge. Four fungal isolates, namely, Aspergillus flavipes, A. terreus, A. flavus, and A. parasiticus, were selected from our previous study as potential Taxol producers, and their potency for Taxol production was evaluated in response to fluconazole and silver nitrate. A higher Taxol yield was reported in the cultures of A. flavipes (185 µg/L) and A. terreus (66 µg/L). With addition of fluconazole, the yield of Taxol was increased 1.8 and 1.2-fold for A. flavipes and A. terreus, respectively, confirming the inhibition of sterol biosynthesis and redirecting the geranyl phosphate pool to terpenoids synthesis. A significant inhibition of ergosterol biosynthesis by A. flavipes with addition of fluconazole was observed, correlating with the increase on Taxol yield. To increase the Taxol solubility and to reduce its cytotoxicity, Taxol was modified via chemical conjugation with porphyrin, and the degree of conjugation was checked from the Thin layer chromatography and UV spectral analysis. The antiproliferative activity of native and modified Taxol conjugates was evaluated; upon porphyrin conjugation, the activity of Taxol towards HepG2 was increased 1.5-fold, while its cytotoxicity to VERO cells was reduced 3-fold.

Abstract
Photonic DNA nanostructures are typically prepared by the assembly of multiple sequences of long DNA strands that are conjugated covalently to various dye molecules. Herein we introduce a noncovalent method for the construction of porphyrin-containing DNA nanowires and their networks that uses the programmed assembly of a single, very short, oligodeoxyribonucleotide sequence. Specifically, our strategy exploits a number of supramolecular binding modalities (including DNA base-pairing, metal-ion coordination, and β-cyclodextrin-adamantane derived host-guest interactions) for simultaneous nanowire assembly and porphyrin incorporation. Furthermore, we also show that the resultant DNA-porphyrin assembly can be further functionalized with a complementary "off-the-shelf" DNA binding dye resulting in photonic structures with broadband absorption and energy transfer capabilities.

Abstract
A convenient approach for the self-assembly of well-defined porphyrin nanowires in water, wherein the individual monomers do not aggregate via pi-pi interactions, is disclosed. These unidirectional and heteromeric assemblies are instead composed of robust beta-CD/adamantane host/guest interactions. A combination of surface microscopies and fluorescence energy transfer experiments were conducted on the nanowires demonstrating their stability and resistance to disassembly.

Use of the non-pneumatic anti-shock garment (NASG) to reduce blood loss and time to recovery from shock for women with obstetric haemorrhage in Egypt. Glob Public Health 2009; 2:110-24. Abstract
Obstetric haemorrhage is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality. In many low-resource settings, delays in transport to referral facilities and in obtaining lifesaving treatment, contribute to maternal deaths. The non-pneumatic anti-shock garment (NASG) is a low-technology pressure device that decreases blood loss, restores vital signs, and has the potential to improve adverse outcomes by helping women survive delays in receiving adequate emergency obstetric care. With brief training, even individuals without medical backgrounds can apply this first-aid device. In this secondary analysis of hospital data from a pre-post intervention study in Egypt (N=364 women with obstetric haemorrhage and shock), 158 received standard care, while 206 received standard care plus the NASG. The NASG significantly reduced blood loss, time to recovery from shock, and, for those with postpartum haemorrhage due to uterine atony who received oxytocin, the NASG had a significant effect on blood loss independent of oxytocin. These results indicate that the NASG may be a valuable innovation for reducing maternal mortality in low-resource settings. Testing at community and household levels will be necessary in order to determine whether the NASG can help women survive the longest delays.

Abstract
The naturally occurring nucleic acid bases (nucleobases) adenine, thymine (uracil), guanine, and cytosine are widely appreciated for their ability to stabilize canonical Watson-Crick base-pairing motifs, as well as a number of other well-characterized arrangements, such as Hoogsteen and wobble heterodimers, and a variety of homodimers. In this tutorial review, the use of these kinds of interactions to form synthetic polymeric and oligomeric ensembles is summarized. Particular emphasis will be placed on synthetic analogues of guanine that stabilize the formation of well-defined higher order aggregates, as well as de novo polymeric systems whose properties are modulated by the presence of nucleobase derivatives incorporated within or attached to the chain-defining backbone. In both cases, nucleobase-nucleobase interactions serve to underlie the chemistry, establish the structural morphology, and enable the development of bioinspired, environmentally responsive materials.

Abstract
We investigated the correlation between hypercholesterolaemia and oxidative stress and P-selectin and interleukin-6 (IL-6) as markers for endothelial status. We studied 40 Egyptian adults with asymptomatic hypercholesterolaemia and 20 age- and sex-matched controls. Lipid peroxidation was significantly higher (P < 0.001) in the study group and positively correlated with cholesterol (P < 0.001) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (P < 0.002). Glutathione peroxidase activity was also significantly higher (P < 0.001) with positive correlation with cholesterol (P < 0.001) and LDL (P < 0.001). Markers for endothelial cell function were significantly higher in the study group (P < 0.001) with a positive correlation with cholesterol (P < 0.001) and LDL (P < 0.001). Hypercholesterolaemia causes endothelial microinflammation, and P-selectin and IL-6 may also be risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the effect of non-pneumatic anti-shock garment (NASG) on blood loss from obstetric haemorrhage with standard management of obstetric haemorrhage. DESIGN Observational study of consecutive obstetric haemorrhage cases before and after introduction of the NASG. SETTING Four tertiary care maternity facilities in Egypt. SAMPLE The sample consisted of women with obstetric haemorrhage and signs of shock and the entry criteria were: >750 mL of blood loss and either pulse of >100 beats per minute or systolic blood pressure of <100 mmHg. A total of 158 women were in the preintervention group and 206 in the postintervention group. METHODS All the women with haemorrhage meeting the eligibility criteria were treated according to the standard protocol for 4 months (May-August 2004); blood loss was measured and recorded. The NASG was then introduced, and all the women meeting the eligibility criteria were treated according to the standard haemorrhage protocol plus the NASG for 4 months (September-December 2004). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Measured blood loss collected in a closed-end, graduated, plastic, under buttocks collection drape. RESULTS Median measured blood loss in the drape following study entry was 50% lower in those treated with the NASG (250 versus 500 mL, P < 0.001). There was also a non-statistically significant decrease in morbidity and mortality. CONCLUSIONS This is the first comparative study of the NASG with a standard obstetric haemorrhage treatment protocol. The NASG shows promise for management of obstetric haemorrhage, particularly in lower resource settings. Larger studies will be needed to determine if the NASG contributes to statistically significant decreases in morbidity and mortality.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the efficacy of a programme using oestradiol benzoate, progesterone and the prostaglandin-F2 (PG) analogue, cloprostenol, to synchronise oestrus and ovulation in dairy cows, compared with a programme using a gonadotropinreleasing hormone (GnRH) agonist, buserelin, and cloprostenol. METHODS Twenty non-lactating dairy cows, at random stages of the oestrus cycle, were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments. In Treatment 1 ( OPPG; n=10), cows were injected with 2 mg oestradiol benzoate intramuscularly (IM) plus 200 mg progesterone subcutaneously (SC) on Day 0, followed by 500 microg cloprostenol IM on Day 9 and 1 mg oestradiol benzoate on Day 10. In Treatment 2 (GPG; n=10), cows were injected with 10 microg buserelin IM on Day 0, 500 microg cloprostenol IM on Day 7 and 10 microg buserelin on Day 9. The ovaries of all cows were examined by ultrasonography, using an 8 MHz probe, from 5 days before the initial treatment until ovulation. Cows were observed for oestrus 3 times daily for 7 days after cloprostenol treatment. Blood samples were collected daily for determination of progesterone, and 6-hourly for 36 h after the second oestradiol or buserelin injection for the determination of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinising hormone (LH) concentrations. RESULTS The percentage of cows observed in oestrus was higher in the OPPG group than in the GPG group (100% vs 55.6%, p=0.018). Treatment with either short-acting progesterone plus oestradiol benzoate or buserelin was followed by atresia or ovulation of the dominant follicle. Emergence of a new follicular wave occurred earlier (p>0.001) in the GPG group (2.2+/-0.2 days) than in the OPPG group (3.6+/-0.2 days). There was no significant difference between treatment groups in the variation of time of follicular wave emergence or size of the largest follicles at either the time of initial treatment (10.8+/-1.4 mm vs 11.1+/-0.8 mm), cloprostenol treatment (13.8+/-0.7 mm vs 14.0+/-1.3 mm) or of ovulation (15.4+/-0.7 mm vs 17.6+/-1.1 mm; p=0.10). The LH surge occurred sooner after the second injection of buserelin (4.0+/-1.0 h) than after the second injection of oestradiol benzoate (22.8+/-1.2 h; p>0.001). The interval between the second injection of oestradiol benzoate or buserelin and ovulation did not differ significantly between treatment groups (1.7+/-0.3 days vs 1.6+/-0.2 days; p=0.69). CONCLUSIONS The use of short-term progesterone treatment, combined with oestradiol benzoate for follicular wave synchronisation, and cloprostenol to cause lysis of residual luteal tissue, is a promising alternative to established methods of oestrus synchronisation in cows.

Abstract
Uterus didelphys is a congenital defect of monotocous species. This short contribution describes the condition in a cow that had a pregnancy in the right horn and a corpus luteum on the ipsilateral ovary. This finding demonstrates that pregnancy can occur in a cow with uterus didelphys, although the fate of the pregnancy was obviously not known. The case was identified during routine collection of reproductive tracts in a New Zealand abattoir. It is believed to be the first report of uterus didelphys in a bovine abattoir specimen.

Abstract
Two anasarcous foetuses of Awassi sheep are described. The foetuses were removed from the dams by caesarean section because of dystocia due to failure of cervical dilation. Uterine incision was made in situ because uteri were so distended they could not be brought out from the site of incision. Large quantities of uterine fluids and abnormal thick placentas were found. One foetus weighed about 7 kg and the other 13 kg. The foetal heads were deformed: the upper jaw was prognathic and the left ear of the small foetus was cystic. Necropsy revealed subcutaneous musculature was soft and flabby and abdominal and thoracic cavities contained serosanguinous fluid. Histopathological examination revealed that only the larger foetus had focal aggregates of basophilic nucleated red blood cells and scattered megakaryocytes in the liver. We conclude that anasarca can occur in Awassi sheep, with and without associated extramedullary haematopoiesis.

Abstract
This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of triiodothyronine, determined by pulmonary function tests and c-AMP plasma and sputum levels, in asthmatic children. Twenty-three children clinically euthyroid and complaining of chronic bronchial asthma were given a triiodothyronine (T3) supply for a period of 30 days. Pulmonary function tests, plasma and sputum cyclic AMP and plasma T3 levels were performed prior to and after T3 therapy. Patients were requested to continue on their usual antiasthma medicines and to try reduction of the doses of the drugs they needed as possible. All patients tolerated well the T3 regimen without any adverse effect. They all reported at the end of the 30 days an obvious subjective improvement of their asthmatic conditions with a decrease in the number of exacerbations. Seven patients stopped their usual antiasthmatic medicines, being maintained on T3 only and 3 have decreased the amount of bronchodilators needed. A significant improvement of pulmonary function tests was noted in all patients. Also, significantly increased levels of plasma and sputum c-AMP were observed after T3 administration in comparison to the control and pretest values. No statistical differences were found in plasma T3 between the control and the patients either before or after T3 therapy. The study revealed that T3 administration to clinically euthyroid chronic asthmatic children induced a beneficial effect. This might be through improvement of c-AMP synthesis. T3 in the doses used is devoid of side effects, proves to be a useful adjuvant to classic antiasthma therapy, and may reduce the amount of bronchodilators needed.

Contraceptive steroid concentrations in women with early active schistosomiasis: lack of effect of antischistosomal drugs. Contraception 1986; 33:373-7. Abstract
Plasma concentrations of the oral contraceptive steroids (OCS) ethinyloestradiol (EE2) and levonorgestrel (LNG) have been determined in women with early active schistosomiasis and compared to those obtained in healthy volunteers. Steroid concentrations following a single dose of Ovral (500 micrograms LNG, 50 micrograms EE2) or during a multiple dose regimen were unaffected by the disease. There was no significant effect of the antischistosomal drugs praziquantel (40 mg X kg-1) or metrifonate (10 mg X kg-1 X 3 at 2-week intervals) on plasma steroid concentrations. In regular users of OCS, significantly higher concentrations of LNG were observed than in women who received only a single dose. We conclude that there is no pharmacokinetic reason for withholding OCS from patients with early active schistosomiasis who are also receiving either praziquantel or metrifonate.

Pharmacokinetics of oral contraceptive steroids in Egyptian women: studies with Ovral, Nordette and Norminest. Contraception 1986; 33:379-84. Abstract
Plasma concentration profiles and pharmacokinetic parameters have been obtained following single dose administration of three commonly used oral contraceptive steroid preparations, Ovral, Nordette and Norminest to Egyptian women. The constituents of the preparations are as follows: Ovral (50 micrograms ethinyloestradiol, EE2 and 500 micrograms levonorgestrel, LNG); Nordette (30 micrograms EE2 and 150 micrograms LNG); and Norminest (35 micrograms EE2 and 500 micrograms norethisterone, NOR). Peak plasma concentrations of EE2 ranged between 116-160 pg ml-1 for Ovral, 55-78 pg ml-1 for Norminest and 30-70 pg ml-1 for Nordette. There was no significant difference in half-life (t1/2), oral clearance (CL) or apparent volume of distribution (Vd). The relative values of the area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC) reflected well the different amounts of oestrogen in each preparation. There was no significant difference in t1/2, CL or Vd for LNG in the 2 preparations containing this progestogen. The mean AUC following Nordette (150 micrograms LNG) was 40% of that following Ovral (500 micrograms LNG; p less than 0.001). Comparing pharmacokinetic parameters for the same dose of LNG (Ovral) and NOR (Norminest) showed the AUC to be decreased and CL and Vd increased in the latter group. The study indicates that the kinetic profile of the OCS in healthy Egyptian women are similar to other ethnic populations.

Abstract
Two goats were slaughtered at zero, 24, 62 hours and five, seven, nine, 12, 15, 18, 21, 25, 28, 32 and 36 days after kidding in order to study the involutionary changes of the uterus.Uterine and vaginal discharges were varied in volume and nature and ceased before the end of day 5 postpartum. Uterine contents were found in greater volumes on days 7 to 9, in lesser volumes thereafter until no longer present on days 12 to 15 postpartum.Dimensions and weights of the genital tracts were returned to their initial nonpregnant state within a period of 28 days after kidding.

Abstract
Ovaries of two goats with persistent corpus luteum were studied by histochemical methods. Lutein cells showed moderate alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase activity associated with strong delta 5-3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and succinic tetrazolium reductase activity. The results are interpreted as an indication that the corpus luteum was functioning.
