Abstract
Metal hydroborates and their derivatives have been receiving attention as potential solid-state ion conductors for battery applications owing to their impressive electrochemical and mechanical characteristics. However, to date only a fraction of these compounds has been investigated as solid-state electrolytes. Here, MB12H11NH3 (M = Li and Na) hydroborates are synthesized and investigated as electrolyte materials for all-solid-state batteries. The room temperature α-NaB12H11NH3 was structurally solved in P212121 (a = 7.1972(3) Å, b = 9.9225(4) Å, and c = 14.5556(5) Å). It shows a polymorphic structural transition near 140 °C to cubic Fm3̄m. LiB12H11NH3 and NaB12H11NH3 exhibit cationic conductivities of σ(Li+) = 3.0 × 10-4 S cm-1 and σ(Na+) = 1.2 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 200 °C. Hydration is found to improve ionic conductivity of the hydroborates. It is presumed that modest ionic conductivities could be due to a lack of significant re-orientational dynamics in the crystal structure resulting from the presence of the bulky -NH3 group in the anion.

Associations between early life transitions and depressed mood over time: A 27-year study. Eur J Public Health 2022. Abstract
Abstract
Background
Few studies have looked at how life transitions influence depressed mood from adolescence to adulthood and if parental socioeconomic status (SES) moderates these effects.
Study questions
Methods
We used latent growth modelling to analyze depressed mood in a Norwegian sample (n = 1257) surveyed at age 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 19, 21, 23, 30 and 40 (1990-2017). The effects of life transitions were modelled as time-varying predictors. At age 30 and 40, attaining employment and beginning cohabitation were used as covariates while parenthood was controlled for from age 19. Time-invariant covariates were gender and SES.
Results
Depressed mood peaked at age 15 and 18, but decreased over time - following a polynomic curve with a linear (B = -.38, 95% CI = [-.49, -.28], p < .001) and quadratic slope (B = .05, 95% CI = [.013, .086], p < .001). Leaving the parental home (B = -.166, 95% CI = [-.250, -.083], p < .001) and beginning cohabitation (B = -.130, 95% CI = [-.231, -.029], p < .05) led to decreases in depressed mood regardless of age of transition. Higher SES was associated with lower depressed mood at intercept compared to mid-SES (B = -.106, 95% CI = [-.295, -.030], p < .05) and low SES (B = -.202, 95% CI = [-.343, -.062], p < .05). Girls also reported a higher intercept level of depressed mood (B = .274, 95% CI = [.165, .383], p < .001). Life transitions were not moderated by SES.
Conclusions
The study demonstrated that leaving the parental home and beginning cohabitation were associated with depressed mood, and SES showed no moderation. Public health initiatives should therefore pay attention to life transitions when aiming to lessen depressive symptoms from adolescent years to adulthood.

Abstract
Metal closo-borates and their derivatives have shown promise in several fields of application from cancer therapy to solid-state electrolytes partly owing to their stability in aqueous solutions and high thermal stability. We report the synthesis and structural analysis of α- and β-CaB10H10, which are structurally and energetically similar, both showing a tetrahedral coordination of Ca2+ to four closo-borate cages. The main distinctions between the α- and β-polymorph are found in the crystal system (monoclinic or orthorhombic), topology (wurtzite or cag), and the degree of displacement of Ca2+ from the center of the coordination tetrahedron. Neutron vibrational spectroscopy measurements further revealed distinct perturbations in the cation-anion interactions arising from the different crystal structures. We also synthesized and structurally investigated five stoichiometric hydrates, CaB10H10·xH2O, x = 1, 4, 5, 6, and 7, and discovered an order-disorder polymorphic transition, α- to β-CaB10H10·6H2O. The hydrates reveal a rich structural diversity with ordered structures, CaB10H10·xH2O, x = 1, 4, 5, 6, and 7, as well as disordered structures, x = 6 and 8. The latter allow for a continuum of compositions within 7-8 molecules of crystal water. The DFT-optimized experimental crystal structures reveal complex networks of three types of hydrogen interactions: dihydrogen bonds, B-Hδ-···+δH-O; hydrogen-hydrogen interactions, B-H···H-B; and hydrogen bonds, O-Hδ+···-δO-H. A rather short B-H···H-B (2.14 Å) interaction is observed for CaB10H10·5H2O, which is locally stabilized by four hydrogen bonds.

Abstract
The lower limit of metal hydride nanoconfinement is demonstrated through the coordination of a molecular hydride species to binding sites inside the pores of a metal-organic framework (MOF). Magnesium borohydride, which has a high hydrogen capacity, is incorporated into the pores of UiO-67bpy (Zr6O4(OH)4(bpydc)6 with bpydc2- = 2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-dicarboxylate) by solvent impregnation. The MOF retained its long-range order, and transmission electron microscopy and elemental mapping confirmed the retention of the crystal morphology and revealed a homogeneous distribution of the hydride within the MOF host. Notably, the B-, N-, and Mg-edge XAS data confirm the coordination of Mg(II) to the N atoms of the chelating bipyridine groups. In situ 11B MAS NMR studies helped elucidate the reaction mechanism and revealed that complete hydrogen release from Mg(BH4)2 occurs as low as 200 °C. Sieverts and thermogravimetric measurements indicate an increase in the rate of hydrogen release, with the onset of hydrogen desorption as low as 120 °C, which is approximately 150 °C lower than that of the bulk material. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations support the improved dehydrogenation properties and confirm the drastically lower activation energy for B-H bond dissociation.

Abstract
Hemiammine lithium borohydride, LiBH4·1/2NH3, is characterized and a new Li+ conductivity mechanism is identified. It exhibits a Li+ conductivity of 7 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 40 °C in the solid state and 3.0 × 10-2 S cm-1 at 55 °C after melting. The molten state of LiBH4·1/2NH3 has a high viscosity and can be mechanically stabilized in nano-composites with inert metal oxides and other hydrides making it a promising battery electrolyte.

Abstract
Rare earth metal borohydrides show a number of interesting properties, e.g., Li ion conductivity and luminescence, and the series of materials is well explored. However, previous attempts to obtain M(BH4)3 (M = La, Ce) by reacting MCl3 and LiBH4 yielded LiM(BH4)3Cl. Here, a synthetic approach is presented, which allows the isolation of M(BH4)3 (M = La, Ce) via formation of intermediate complexes with dimethyl sulfide. The cubic c-Ce(BH4)3 (Fm3̅c) is isostructural to high-temperature polymorphs of A(BH4)3 (A = Y, Sm, Er, Yb) borohydrides. The larger size of the Ce3+ ion makes the empty void in the open ReO3-type framework structure potentially accessible to small guest molecules like H2. Another new rhombohedral polymorph, r-M(BH4)3 (M = La, Ce), is a closed form of the framework, prone to stacking faults. The new compounds M(BH4)3 (M = La, Ce) can be combined with LiCl in an addition reaction to form LiM(BH4)3Cl also known as Li4[M4(BH4)12Cl4]; the latter contains the unique tetranuclear cluster [M4(BH4)12Cl4]4- and shows high Li-ion conductivity. This reaction pathway opens a way to synthesize a series of A4[M4(BH4)12X4] (M = La, Ce) compounds with different anions (X) and metal ions (A) and potentially high ion conductivity.

Abstract
IntroductionThe association between schizophrenia and quality of care for medical comorbidities in universal health care systems remains unclear.ObjectivesTo elucidate whether equal access also implies equivalent and sufficient care.AimsTo compare the quality of care for heart failure, diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) among patients with and without schizophrenia in Denmark.MethodsIn a nationwide population-based cohort study, we used Danish national registries to estimate the risk of receiving guideline recommended disease-specific processes of care between 2004 and 2013.ResultsCompared to patients without schizophrenia, patients with schizophrenia had lower chance of receiving high overall quality of care (≥ 80% of recommended processes of care) for heart failure (Relative risk [RR] 0.67, 95% CI: 0.48-0.92), diabetes (RR 0.84, 95% CI: 0.79-0.89) and COPD (RR 0.82, 95% CI: 0.72-0.93) as well as lower chance of receiving individual disease-specific processes of care including treatment with beta-blockers (RR 0.87, 95% CI: 0.79-0.96) in heart failure care and measurement for albuminuria (RR 0.96, 95% CI: 0.93-0.99), eye examination at least every second year (RR 0.97, 95% CI: 0.94-0.99) and feet examination (RR 0.96, 95% CI: 0.93-0.99) in diabetes care. Diabetic patients with schizophrenia also had lower chance of receiving antihypertensive (RR 0.84, 95% CI: 0.73-0.96) and ACE/ATII inhibitors (RR 0.72, 95% CI: 0.55-0.94). In COPD care, patients with schizophrenia had lower chance of receiving LAMA/LABA medication (RR 0.92, 95% CI: 0.87-0.98), however, higher chance of treatment with non-invasive inhalation (RR 1.85, 95% CI: 1.61-2.12).ConclusionsQuality of care for three medical comorbidities was suboptimal for patients with schizophrenia.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

The impact of involved node, involved field and mantle field radiotherapy on estimated radiation doses and risk of late effects for pediatric patients with Hodgkin lymphoma. Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of radiotherapy (RT) is debated for pediatric patients with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) due to the late effects of treatment. Radiation doses to the thyroid, heart, lungs, and breasts are compared with the extensive mantle field (MF), Involved Field RT(IFRT), Modified IFRT (mIFRT), and Involved Node RT (INRT) and the risk of radiation-induced cardiovascular disease, secondary cancers, and the corresponding Life Years Lost (LYL) is estimated with each technique. PROCEDURE INRT, mIFRT, IFRT, and MF plans (20 and 30 Gy) were simulated for 10 supradiaphragmatic, clinical stage I–II classical HL patients <18 years old, total of 4 x 2 plans for each patient. The lifetime excess risks of cardiac morbidity, cardiac mortality, lung, breast, and thyroid cancer with each technique were estimated. The estimated excess risks attributable to RT were based on HL series with long-term follow-up, treating death from other causes as competing risks. The corresponding LYL were derived from the estimated excess risks. Statistical analyses were performed with repeated measures ANOVA. RESULTS Both a reduction in field size and in prescribed radiation dose significantly lowered the estimated dose to the heart, lungs, breasts, and thyroid compared to past, extended fields, even for patients with mediastinal disease. This translated into a significantly reduced estimated risk of cardiovascular disease, secondary cancers, and LYL. CONCLUSIONS Involved Node Radiotherapy should be considered for pediatric patients with Hodgkin lymphoma since it is estimated to substantially lower the risk of severe long-term complications.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Salvia officinalis has been used as a traditional remedy against diabetes in many countries and its glucose-lowering effects have been demonstrated in animal studies. The active compounds and their possible mode of action are still unknown although it has been suggested that diterpenes may be responsible for the anti-diabetic effect of Salvia officinalis. AIM OF THE STUDY To investigate whether the reported anti-diabetic effects of Salvia officinalis are related to activation of the nuclear receptor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)γ and to identify the bioactive constituents. MATERIALS AND METHODS From a dichloromethane extract of Salvia officinalis able to activate PPARγ several major metabolites were isolated by chromatographic techniques. To assess bioactivity of the isolated metabolites a PPARγ transactivation assay was used. RESULTS Eight diterpenes were isolated and identified including a new abietane diterpene being the epirosmanol ester of 12-O-methyl carnosic acid and 20-hydroxyferruginol, which was isolated from Salvia officinalis for the first time, as well as viridiflorol, oleanolic acid, and α-linolenic acid. 12-O-methyl carnosic acid and α-linolenic acid were able to significantly activate PPARγ whereas the remaining metabolites were either unable to activate PPARγ or yielded insignificant activation. CONCLUSIONS Selected metabolites from Salvia officinalis were able to activate PPARγ and hence, the anti-diabetic activity of this plant could in part be mediated through this nuclear receptor.

Abstract
LANCL1 (LanC-like protein 1) is related to the bacterial LanC (lanthionine synthetase C) family, which is involved in the biosynthesis of antimicrobial peptides. Highest expression levels of LANCL1 are found in testes and brain, two organs that exist behind blood-tissue barriers. In the mouse, the establishment of an impermeable blood-testis barrier occurs between day 10-16 post natal (pn). Differential display analysis showed that the expression level of LANCL1 mRNA in mouse testes was very low until day 16 pn, but increased gradually from day 16 pn to reach a maximum on days 22-24 pn followed by a slight reduction from day 26 pn to adult animals. Thus, the expression of LANCL1 mRNA is initiated following the establishment of the blood-testis barrier. In situ hybridisation revealed that LANCL1 mRNA was induced in diplotene spermatocytes, which appear for the first time in mouse testes between days 18 and 20 pn, verifying the expression profile determined by differential display. LANCL1 mRNA level remained high in the meiotic division phase and in early round spermatids, but was down regulated in elongating spermatids and it was undetectable in step 9 elongating spermatids in stage IX (as defined by Russel et al., 1990). The steady decrease in expression level from round spermatids in stage I to elongating spermatids in stage IX suggested that LANCL1 mRNA was not transcribed in spermatids. LANCL1 expression in rat testes was initiated already in pachytene spermatocytes in stage IX, but otherwise similar to mouse.

Cancer-associated serum antigen level: a novel prognostic indicator for survival in patients with recurrent ovarian carcinoma. Int J Gynecol Cancer 2006; 15:836-43. Abstract
The aim was to examine the value of the pretherapeutic serum cancer-associated serum antigen (CASA) level as a prognostic factor for survival in patients with recurrent epithelial ovarian carcinoma. Serum levels of CASA and cancer antigen (CA)125 were prospectively determined in 70 consecutive patients with recurrent ovarian cancer before the start of second-line chemotherapy. Univariate and multivariate analyses of survival were performed. The median level of serum CASA was 6.5 U/mL (range: 0.2-1437 U/mL). Univariate analysis showed that patients with a CASA level >10.0 U/mL had significantly shorter survival than patients with CASA level < or =10.0 U/mL (P= 0.002). Using different CASA cutoff levels (6.0, 6.5, and 10.0 U/mL), multivariate Cox analyses identified CASA as an independent prognostic factor for survival at every cutoff level. The strongest prognostic function for CASA was found at a cutoff level of 10.0 U/mL (>10 vs < or =10 U/mL; hazard ratio, 2.7; 95% confidence interval, 1.6-4.7; P < 0.001). The pretreatment CA125 level was not found to be significantly associated with survival by any of the cutoffs (35, 65, 132, and 339 U/mL). A pretreatment elevated level of the tumor marker CASA is an adverse prognostic factor for survival in patients with ovarian cancer relapse.

Catheter Directed Thrombolysis for Treatment of Ilio-femoral Deep Venous Thrombosis is Durable, Preserves Venous Valve Function and May Prevent Chronic Venous Insufficiency. Eur J Vasc Endovasc Surg 2005; 30:556-62. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the results of catheter directed thrombolysis offered to patients with acute femoro-iliac deep venous thrombosis (DVT). DESIGN Retrospective analysis of all patients treated with this modality at Gentofte Hospital until December 2003. MATERIAL Forty-five consecutive patients treated between June 1999 and December 2003 with a median age of 31 years. All patients had femoro-iliac DVT with an average anamnesis of 6 days. METHODS All patients were treated by catheter directed infusion of alteplase into the popliteal vein. After thrombolysis residual venous stenoses were treated by percutaneous balloon angioplasty (PTA) and stenting. Patients were followed with color-duplex scanning for assessment of venous patency and reflux. RESULTS Forty-two of 45 (93%) of cases were treated successfully with reopening of the thrombosed vein segments. In 30 of 45 cases a residual stenosis was treated by PTA and stenting. Only one serious complication was observed: Compartment syndrome of the forearm where arterial punctures had been taken. After an average of 24 months follow-up were no cases of re-thrombosis among the 42 patients discharged with open veins. Only two of 41 with presumed normal venous valve function prior to DVT developed reflux during follow-up. CONCLUSION In this selected patient group, catheter directed thrombolysis seems effective in treating acute DVT, it appears durable and preserves venous valve function in the majority. The method needs to be tested in a randomised controlled trial.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the pharmacokinetics of three different single doses (0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg) of repaglinide in healthy Caucasian and Japanese subjects. In this single-center, open-label, randomized, three-period crossover study, 27 healthy male subjects (15 Caucasian and 12 Japanese) each received three different single doses of repaglinide (0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg) at consecutive 24-hour intervals. Pharmacokinetic profiles, including area under the curve (AUC0-t), maximum serum concentration (Cmax), time to Cmax (tmax), and half-life (t1/2), were determined for each dose of repaglinide. The relative change in blood glucose level (RC1h) and area under the blood glucose curve (AUGC0-1) at 1 hour after dose were also measured. After oral dosing, both Cmax and AUC0-t increased linearly with dose within the 0.5- to 2.0-mg dose range, regardless of ethnic group. Both Cmax and AUC0-t were significantly higher in Japanese subjects than in Caucasian subjects. At each dose of repaglinide, Cmax and AUC were statistically significantly higher in Japanese than in Caucasian subjects (p = 0.0038 and 0.023, respectively). Discrepancies in body weight and body mass index (BMI) between Caucasian and Japanese subjects could not explain the between-group differences in Cmax or AUC0-t. Statistically significant differences in pharmacodynamic parameters (RC1h and AUGC0-1) were found between ethnic groups (p < 0.0001), the difference being more pronounced for RC1h than AUGC0-1. At a dose of 2.0 mg, the mean decrease in RC1h was 41% for Japanese subjects and 24% for Caucasian subjects. Hypoglycemic reactions were more common at the highest dose (2.0 mg), where they were observed more frequently in Japanese (7 cases) than in Caucasian subjects (4 cases). It was concluded that higher serum levels of repaglinide and greater reductions in blood glucose levels are found in Japanese than in Caucasian subjects following a single oral dose of repaglinide within the 0.5- to 2.0-mg dose range. Repaglinide is well tolerated in both ethnic groups. The results indicate that glycemic control targets may be achieved at lower doses within the recommended range (0.5-4.0 mg/meal) when repaglinide is used to treat Japanese patients in comparison to Caucasian patients.

Splanchnic extraction and clearance of tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) after injection of recombinant t-PA (Actilyse) in resting healthy subjects is proportional to the arterial concentration. Blood Coagul Fibrinolysis 2002; 13:331-8. Abstract
The purpose of the study was to evaluate the splanchnic extraction of tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) in normal healthy fasting subjects after the injection of recombinant t-PA (rt-PA; Actilyse). In nine healthy volunteers (five male, four female), 21-29 years of age, the concentration of t-PA was determined in plasma samples taken simultaneously from a femoral artery and a large liver vein after a bolus injection (5, 10 or 20 mg) of rt-PA. The splanchnic plasma flow rate, the plasma volume, and the splanchnic extraction fraction of t-PA were determined. After the rt-PA injection, the measured arterial concentration of t-PA decreased from 36 750 to 45 pmol/l for t-PA antigen and from 50 700 to 17 pmol/l for active t-PA. The splanchnic extraction fraction decreased from 0.95 to 0.02 for t-PA antigen and from 0.78 to 0.08 (n = 3) for active t-PA. The extraction fraction was proportional to the arterial concentration of t-PA when the arterial concentration of t-PA was above about 300 pmol/l (both t-PA antigen and active t-PA). The median splanchnic plasma flow rate was 911 ml/min (range, 651-1149 ml/min). In the individual subject, the splanchnic plasma flow rate remained constant during the experimental period. The main conclusion of the study is that the splanchnic clearance and extraction fraction of t-PA, following an injection of rt-PA in the resting fasting steady state, depends on the arterial concentration of t-PA. The higher the arterial concentration of t-PA, the higher the extraction fraction of t-PA.

Abstract
Using an invasive technique, we studied the mean transit time, the net quantitative turnover rate, and the sites of synthesis and catabolism of tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) and plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1) in healthy young volunteers in the fasting, steady state. Blood was sampled simultaneously from a large hepatic vein, an artery and the inferior caval vein, while measuring the splanchnic plasma flow rate and the plasma volume. We found that the catabolism of active t-PA and t-PA antigen took place in the splanchnic circulation with net rates of 7.2 and 6.3 pmol/min, respectively. The extraction fraction and the mean transit time in the splanchnic circulation were, respectively, 0.63 and 5.6 min for active t-PA and 0.17 and 21 min for t-PA antigen. Active PAI-1 was synthesized in the splanchnic circulation at a rate of 890 IU/min and had a mean transit time of about 9.8 min. No net extraction of PAI-1 antigen took place in the splanchnic circulation. In conclusion, we demonstrated that active t-PA and t-PA antigen are catabolized and active PAI-1 produced in the splanchnic circulation in young healthy subjects during steady state. Furthermore, our data show that active t-PA was also eliminated outside the splanchnic region with a catabolism rate of about 8.4 pmol/min. No net complex formation could be demonstrated in the peripheral circulation. We therefore suggest that active t-PA is eliminated by a re-uptake in the endothelium in the peripheral vessels or in the lung circulation.

Abstract
We prepared a molecular receptor based on the molecular tweezer concept. Our system offers versatility, an extremely short synthetic route, good yield, large quantities, and finally having binding constants that equal the best known tweezer molecules when it comes to binding various nitroaromatics such as 1,3,5-trinitrotoluene (24 M(-1)), 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene (182 M(-1)), and 2,4,7-trinitrofluorenone (490 M(-1)) as determined using 1H NMR in CDCl3. It is notable that these binding constants are achieved although the molecular framework is not locked in a fixed and rigid conformation. The rigidity has been claimed to be the governing factor when it comes to achieving a large binding constant. We propose that our molecular tweezer system may be preorganized and that this explains the high binding constants observed. Further, we investigated the crystal structures of both the neutral receptor molecule and a complex with 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene and found that the molecule forms a pocket suited to accommodate flat aromatic analytes.

Abstract
[reaction: see text]. A simple, palladium-catalyzed method to convert aryl halides to the parent anilines using lithium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide (LiN(SiMe3)2) is reported. The reaction is catalyzed by Pd(dba)2 and P(t-Bu)3 and can be run with as little as 0.2 mol % of catalyst. The reaction is faster than competing generation of benzyne intermediates and, therefore, provides the aniline products regiospecifically.

Abstract
The combination of a Wittig olefination and a dihydroxylation reaction constitutes a facile synthetic protocol for the transformation of unprotected carbohydrates into higher sugars. The Wittig reaction is carried out with tert-butyl or diphenylmethyl ester stabilized phosphoranes to give (E)-configured alpha,beta-unsaturated esters as the only products in most cases. These are dihydroxylated in a diastereoselective fashion using OsO(4)/NMO. The stereochemical outcome in the dihydroxylation follows Kishi's empirical rule and gives high diastereoselectivity (5:1-8:1) when starting from sugars with the 2,3-threo configuration. When starting from sugars with the 2,3-erythro configuration, the diastereoselectivity in the dihydroxylation is low (2:1-2.5:1). As a result, the Wittig/dihydroxylation protocol is most effective for producing higher sugars with the galacto configuration at the reducing end. The two steps can either be carried out individually or, more efficiently, as a one-pot procedure.

Abstract
Two short synthetic approaches to enantiopure conduritols are described starting from the chiral pool. In both cases, the cyclohexene ring is assembled via ring-closing olefin metathesis. The terminal diene precursers for the metathesis reaction are prepared either from octitols or from tartaric acids. The former route involves a new method for selective bromination of the primary positions in long-chain carbohydrate polyols. Subsequent reductive elimination with zinc then generates the diene. The latter route uses a highly diastereoselective addition of divinylzinc to tartaric dialdehydes for preparation of the dienes.

Oestrogenic potencies of Zeranol, oestradiol, diethylstilboestrol, Bisphenol-A and genistein: implications for exposure assessment of potential endocrine disrupters. Hum Reprod 2001; 16:1037-45. Abstract
We have compared the oestrogenic potency of the synthetic oestrogen Zeranol, used as a growth promoter in meat production, and five related compounds, with the potency of 17beta-oestradiol, diethylstilboestrol (DES), genistein, and Bisphenol-A. The potency was assayed by analysing differences in expression levels of endogenous oestrogen-regulated genes in human MCF7 cells, treated with different concentrations of the compounds. Zeranol, 17beta-oestradiol and DES were about equally potent, genistein was four to six orders of magnitude less potent than 17beta-oestradiol but an order of magnitude more potent than Bisphenol-A. There were gene specific differences, the PS2 and TGFbeta3 genes were about equally sensitive to Zeranol, 17beta-oestradiol and DES whereas a down-regulation of MRG1/p35srj could be detected at fmol/l concentrations of Zeranol whereas 17beta-oestradiol was several orders of magnitude less potent. GST mu3 was sensitive to fmol/l concentrations of 17beta-oestradiol but much less sensitive to Zeranol and DES. The very high potency of Zeranol compared with other potential endocrine disrupters suggests that Zeranol intake from beef products could have greater impact on consumers than the amounts of the known or suspected endocrine disrupters that have been found in food. Since little data is available in man, there is an urgent need for reliable measurements of the concentration of Zeranol in human serum after ingestion of meat products from treated animals.

Abstract
Singlet molecular oxygen (a(1)Delta(g)) has been produced and optically detected upon two-photon nonlinear excitation of a sensitizer with a focused laser beam. The experiments were performed using toluene solutions with either a substituted difuranonaphthalene or a substituted distyryl benzene as the sensitizer. The data indicate that the two-photon absorption cross sections of the difuranonaphthalenes are comparatively large and depend significantly on the functional groups attached to the chromophore. The time-resolved 1270 nm phosphorescence signals used to characterize the production of singlet oxygen are limited in much the same way as signals from other two-photon spectroscopic studies (e.g., weak signals that can be masked by scattered radiation). Nevertheless, the two-photon singlet oxygen signals also reflect the unique advantages of this nonlinear optical technique (e.g., depth penetration in the sample afforded by irradiation in a spectral region void of the more dominant one-photon linear transitions and spatial resolution afforded by irradiation with a focused laser beam).

Abstract
Uptake of branched-chain amino acids by Saccharomyces cerevisiae from media containing a preferred nitrogen source is mediated by the permeases encoded by BAP2, BAP3, and VAP1/TAT1. The transcriptional activity of the BAP2 promoter is affected by a number of genes, including SSY1, which encodes an amino acid permease homologue that is necessary for transcription of BAP2. Other genes that control BAP2 encode known (Leu3p, Tup1p) and putative (Stp1p, Stp2p) transcription factors. We present evidence that the zinc-finger proteins Stp1p and Stp2p bind directly to the BAP2 promoter. Binding of Stplp to the BAP2 promoter in vivo and in vitro indicates that the STP gene family indeed encodes transcription factors. The presence of a Leu3p binding site in the BAP2 promoter is required for full promoter activity on synthetic complete medium. The capacity of Leu3p to activate BAP2 transcription correlates with conditions that affect the level of alpha-isopropyl malate. The effect of a tup1 deletion on BAP2 transcription depends on SSY1. In an ssy1 strain, the phenotype of tup1 conforms to the well-established role of Tup1p as part of a repressor complex, but in the SSY1 strain deletion of TUP1 causes a decrease in transcription, indicating that Tup1p may also have an activating role at the BAP2 promoter. Our results thus suggest a complex interplay between several transcription factors in the expression of BAP2.

Abstract
3,8-Diaryldifurano[2,3-a:2',3'-f]naphthalenes were prepared in two simple steps. First, 1,5-dihydroxynaphthalene and 1-aryl-2-bromodecan-1-ones were condensed to the corresponding naphthalene 1,5-diethers. Second, these intermediates were cyclized using methanesulfonic acid in methylene chloride. Seven examples are given, three of which are doubly substituted with octyl chains to enhance the solubility. This increased solubility allowed further modification of the 3,8-aryl groups to attach electron-withdrawing groups (formyl, nitrile, dicyanovinyl, and benzoyl).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to examine the prognostic values of, respectively, tetranectin (TN) and CA-125 measured in serum from patients presenting with relapse of ovarian cancer (OC). METHODS TN and CA-125 were measured in serum samples from 75 patients with relapse of OC before the start of second-line chemotherapy. The endpoint used was death of OC. The variables were analyzed by univariate life table analysis and multivariate Cox analysis. RESULTS A significantly shortened survival was found for patients with low serum TN values compared to patients with serum TN levels above one of the cutoff levels. The survivals are illustrated by life tables. No prognostic function was found for CA-125. TN and relapse </=12 months after primary treatment were the only significant independent prognostic variables among the following variables tested in the Cox analyses: primary and second-line treatment, CA-125, age, histology, performance score, tumor localization, and size. CONCLUSION Serum TN determination may be valuable in the selection of patients with relapse of OC for new treatment strategies in future studies.

Assaying estrogenicity by quantitating the expression levels of endogenous estrogen-regulated genes. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH PERSPECTIVES 2000; 108:403-12. Abstract
Scientific evidence suggests that humans and wildlife species may experience adverse health consequences from exposure to environmental chemicals that interact with the endocrine system. Reliable short-term assays are needed to identify hormone-disrupting chemicals. In this study we demonstrate that the estrogenic activity of a chemical can be evaluated by assaying induction or repression of endogenous estrogen-regulated "marker genes" in human breast cancer MCF-7 cells. We included four marker genes in the assay--pS2, transforming growth factor beta3 (TGFbeta3), monoamine oxidase A, and [alpha]1-antichymotrypsin--and we evaluated estrogenic activity for 17beta-estradiol (E(2)), diethylstilbestrol, [alpha]-zearalanol, nonylphenol, genistein, methoxychlor, endosulphan, o,p-DDE, bisphenol A, dibutylphthalate, 4-hydroxy tamoxifen, and ICI 182.780. All four marker genes responded strongly to the three high-potency estrogens (E(2), diethylstilbestrol, and [alpha]-zearalanol), whereas the potency of the other chemicals was 10(3)- to 10(6)-fold lower than that of E(2). There were some marker gene-dependent differences in the relative potencies of the tested chemicals. TGFbeta3 was equally sensitive to the three high-potency estrogens, whereas the sensitivity to [alpha]-zearalanol was approximately 10-fold lower than the sensitivity to E(2) and diethylstilbestrol when assayed with the other three marker genes. The potency of nonylphenol was equal to that of genistein when assayed with pS2 and TGFbeta3, but 10- to 100-fold higher/lower with monoamine oxidase A and [alpha]1-antichymotrypsin, respectively. The results are in agreement with results obtained by other methods and suggest that an assay based on endogenous gene expression may offer an attractive alternative to other E-SCREEN methods.
