A comparison of the prevalence of respiratory pathogens and opportunistic respiratory pathogenic profile of 'clean' and 'unclean' removable dental prostheses. J Dent 2024; 145:104968. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine and compare the opportunistic respiratory pathogenic index (ORPI) and prevalence of respiratory pathogens between clean and unclean removable prostheses. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted among 97 removable prosthesis wearers at a teaching dental hospital. Participants' prosthesis hygiene was grouped into clean and unclean. After prosthesis plaque samples were sequenced using the Type IIB Restriction-site Associated DNA Sequencing for Microbiome method, the prevalence was assessed for the presence of respiratory pathogens on each sample. The ORPIs for clean and unclean prostheses were quantified based on the sum of the relative abundance of respiratory pathogenic bacteria in a microbiome using a reference database that contains opportunistic respiratory pathogens and disease-associated information. RESULTS A total of 30 opportunistic respiratory pathogens were identified on the removable prostheses. Eighty-one (83.5 %) removable prostheses harboured respiratory pathogenic bacteria. Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (34.0 %), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (27.8 %), and Streptococcus agalactiae (27.8 %) were the top three prevalent respiratory pathogens detected in plaque samples. There was a significantly higher prevalence of respiratory pathogens residing on unclean than clean prostheses (P = 0.046). However, the ORPIs in both groups showed no statistically significant difference (P = 0.516). CONCLUSIONS The ORPIs for both clean and unclean prostheses demonstrated a similar abundance of respiratory pathogens. However, the high prevalence of respiratory pathogens residing on unclean prostheses should not be underestimated. Therefore, maintaining good prosthesis hygiene is still important for overall oral and systemic health, even though the direct link between prosthesis cleanliness and reduced abundance of respiratory pathogens has not been established. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The association between the prevalence of respiratory pathogens and unclean removable prostheses has been demonstrated and might increase the theoretical risk of respiratory disease development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tooth loss has been associated with cognitive decline, but the underlying mechanisms involving speech and psychosocial impairment remain unclear. OBJECTIVES To investigate the impact of tooth loss-related speech and psychosocial impairment on cognitive function in Hong Kong's older population. METHODS Seventy-six Cantonese-speaking participants between the ages of 51-92 were classified into three groups: patients with complete dentures (CD), partially edentulous patients with less than 10 occluding tooth pairs (OU <10), and at least 10 occluding tooth pairs (OU ≥10). Cognitive function was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Hong Kong Version, One-minute Verbal Fluency Task and Hayling Sentence Completion Test. Objective and subjective speech assessments were carried out using artificial intelligence speech recognition algorithm and a self-designed speech questionnaire. The impact of tooth loss on psychosocial condition was evaluated by the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test and a self-designed questionnaire. Statistical analyses (one-way ANOVA, ANCOVA, Kruskal-Wallis test, Spearman correlation test) were performed. RESULTS Tooth loss was significantly associated with lower cognitive function (p = .008), speech accuracy (p = .018) and verbal fluency (p = .001). Correlations were found between cognitive function and speech accuracy (p < .0001). No significant difference in tooth loss-related psychosocial impact was found between the three groups. CONCLUSION While warranting larger sample sizes, this pilot study highlights the need for further research on the role of speech in the association between tooth loss and cognitive function. The potential cognitive impact of tooth retention, together with its known biological and proprioceptive benefits, supports the preservation of the natural dentition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Growing evidence suggests a potential connection between tooth loss and cognitive function in recent years. Increasing studies have focused on their inter-relationship, however, the underlying mechanism has yet to be fully elucidated. Few studies have considered the role of dietary inflammation and serum albumin in the association between tooth loss and cognitive function. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the role of dietary inflammation and serum albumin in the association between tooth loss and cognitive impairment. METHODS A sample of 1,009 US adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) provided data on oral condition, cognitive function, dietary intake, and serum tests. The association between tooth loss (exposure variable) and cognitive function (outcome variable) was assessed by linear regression. Furthermore, a moderated mediation model was established to examine the influence of dietary inflammation on the association between tooth loss and cognitive tests, and the visualization of the moderating effect of serum albumin concentration was displayed through the Johnson-Neyman curve. RESULTS Participants with impaired dentition had worse cognitive function and a higher Dietary Inflammation Index (DII). DII was highly correlated with Immediate Recall Test (IR), Animal Fluency Test (AFT), and Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST), which mediated 16.46 %, 14.41 % and 11.28 % of the effect between tooth loss and cognitive functions. Additionally, the relationship between DII and DSST was moderated by serum albumin concentration. CONCLUSION Tooth loss was associated with cognitive function which was affected by pro-inflammatory dietary patterns and serum albumin level. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE This study presents evidence for dentists that dietary pattern change due to tooth loss plays a role in cognitive deterioration, which can also be moderated by serum albumin level. Therefore, the preservation of natural teeth is important for cognitive function, especially in an immunocompromised population with decreased serum albumin concentrations.

Abstract
Background The microbiomes on the surface of unclean removable prostheses are complex and yet largely underexplored using metagenomic sequencing technology. Objectives To characterize the microbiome of removable prostheses with different levels of cleanliness using Type IIB Restriction-site Associated DNA for Microbiome (2bRAD-M) sequencing and compare the Microbial Index of Pathogenic Bacteria (MIP) between clean and unclean prostheses. Materials and Methods Ninety-seven removable prostheses were classified into 'clean' and 'unclean' groups. All prosthesis plaque samples underwent 2bRAD metagenomic sequencing to characterize the species-resolved microbial composition. MIPs for clean and unclean prostheses were calculated based on the sum of the relative abundance of pathogenic bacteria in a microbiome using a reference database that contains opportunistic pathogenic bacteria and disease-associated information. Results Beta diversity analyses based on Jaccard qualitative and Bray-Curtis quantitative distance matrices identified significant differences between the two groups (p < 0.05). There was a significant enrichment of many pathogenic bacteria in the unclean prosthesis group. The MIP for unclean prostheses (0.47 ± 0.25) was significantly higher than for clean prostheses (0.37 ± 0.29), p = 0.029. Conclusions The microbial community of plaque samples from 'unclean' prostheses demonstrated compositional differences compared with 'clean' prostheses. In addition, the pathogenic microbiome in the 'unclean' versus 'clean' group differed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the survival and complication rates of resin composite laminate veneers. METHODS Randomized controlled trials and cohort studies with a minimum 2-year follow-up assessing survival and complication rates of resin composite laminate veneers on permanent dentition from 1998 to May 2022. Literature searches were conducted in MEDLINE (PubMed), Scopus, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials electronic databases. References cited in the related reviews and included full-text articles were also hand-searched to further identify potentially relevant studies. RESULTS A total of 827 articles were identified. Twenty-two studies were considered for full-text review after the title and abstract screening stage. After exclusion, 7 studies (3 randomized controlled trials and 4 cohort studies) were included in the systematic review. Three published scales were adopted for the quality and risk of bias assessment. At the survival rate threshold, the overall heterogeneity (I2) for randomized controlled trials was 50.5% (P = .108). The overall pooled survival rate of the randomized controlled trials was 88% (95% CI: 81%-94%), with the mean follow-up time ranging from 24 to 97 months. Surface roughness, color mismatch, and marginal discoloration were the most reported complications. CONCLUSION Resin composite laminate veneers demonstrated moderately high survival rates for the entire sample and the direct laminate veneer group demonstrated higher survival rates than the indirect approach. Most of the complications were regarded as clinically acceptable with or without reintervention.

Abstract
The aims of this study were: To evaluate the surface hardness of simulated dentin caries lesions treated with either silver nanoclusters (AgNCls) synthesized in polymethacrylic acid (PMAA) or 38% silver diammine fluoride (SDF), as well as observe the penetration of the treatment solutions into the simulated caries lesions. Dentin blocks 4 mm thick obtained from caries-free third molars were sectioned and then simulated caries lesions on the occlusal dentin surfaces were created. Each specimen (n = 8) was divided into four sections: (A) treated with 20% AgNCls/PMAA; (B) treated with SDF 38% (FAgamin, Tedequim, Cordoba, Argentina); (C) sound tooth protected by nail-varnish during artificial caries generation (positive control); and (D) artificial caries lesion without surface treatment (negative control). AgNCls/PMAA or SDF were applied on the simulated lesions with a microbrush for 10 s, then excess removed. The surface hardness was measured by means of Vickers indentation test. To trace the depth of penetration, up to 400 μm, of silver ions, elemental composition of the samples was observed using EDX, coupled with SEM, and measured every 50 μm from the surface towards the pulp chamber. Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) was also employed to trace silver ion penetration; the atomic silver line 328.06 nm was used with a 60 μm laser spot size to a depth of 240 μm. Student's-t test identified significant differences between treatment groups for each depth and the Bonferroni test was used for statistical analysis of all groups (p < 0.05). Mean surface hardness values obtained were 111.2 MPa, 72.3 MPa, 103.3 MPa and 50.5 MPa for groups A, B, C and D respectively. There was a significant difference between groups A and C compared with groups B and D, the group treated with AgNCls/PMAA achieved the highest surface hardness, similar or higher than the sound dentin control. A constant presence of silver was observed throughout the depth of the sample for group A, while group B showed a peak concentration of silver at the surface with a significant drop beyond 50 μm. The 20% AgNCls/PMAA solution applied to simulated dentin caries lesions achieved the recovery of surface hardness equivalent to sound dentin with the penetration of silver ions throughout the depth of the lesion.

Prevalence of respiratory pathogens colonizing on removable dental prostheses in healthy older adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis. J Prosthodont 2023. Abstract
PURPOSE This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the prevalence of opportunistic respiratory pathogens colonizing removable dental prostheses in older adults without respiratory diseases. METHODS This review was registered with PROSPERO and conducted in accordance with the principles formed by the working group of the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) to evaluate systematic reviews of prevalence data. Literature searches were conducted across five electronic databases. Quality assessments were determined according to a revised JBI critical appraisal checklist across nine criteria. Comparison between fixed- and random-effects meta-analyses were performed for sensitivity analysis. Prediction intervals were also presented when three or more studies were included in the meta-analysis. RESULTS Across the databases, 1091 articles were identified, and 591 articles remained after the removal of duplications. Twenty 'potentially effective' studies were identified. Ultimately eight studies informed this review and meta-analyses were performed for 13 known respiratory pathogens. The meta-analyses identified the top three common respiratory pathogens residing on the removable prostheses were, in descending order: Staphylococcus aureus: 31.81% (95% CI: 13.34% to 48.24%); Staphylococcus epidermidis: 14.07% (95% CI: 7.88% to 21.48%); Klebsiella pneumoniae: 10.50% (95% CI: 2.55% to 22.30%). The heterogeneity scores for nine respiratory pathogen analyses were classified as 'unimportant inconsistency', I2 = 0% (P > 0.1). For sensitivity analysis, there was no difference between the random- and fixed-effects models. CONCLUSION The existing evidence demonstrated a high burden of certain opportunistic respiratory pathogens, which may be considered a major potential cause of respiratory infections in older adults wearing removable prostheses. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the agreement of removable dental prosthesis cleanliness as assessed by a semi-automated planimetric method between images captured by a digital single-lens reflex camera (DSLR) and smartphone. METHODS A total of 97 participants with removable prostheses were recruited for the quantification of the prosthesis plaque area coverage. The colour images of stained prosthesis plaque were obtained using both a DSLR camera and a smartphone. The prosthesis plaque area coverage was analysed in two ways: (i) prosthesis cleanliness index (PCI) and (ii) percentage plaque area coverage (PPC). The PPC (continuous data) was converted to the PCI (categorical data) to provide prevalence ordinal scales and the agreements in PCI ratings were determined using weighted Kappa statistics. Agreement of PPC scores was determined through assessing directional, standardised directional, and absolute differences and correlation analyses. RESULTS Weighted Kappa values of agreement between PCI categories were excellent (> 0.80) for all comparisons. The mean PPC was 24.79 % as determined by DSLR and 25.37 % as determined by smartphone. There was no statistically significant difference in the means of PPC between the DSLR and smartphone (P = 0.149). The standardised directional difference was 0.15 ('small'). The mean absolute difference was 2.77. The interclass correlation coefficient was 0.98 ('excellent'). CONCLUSIONS This method showed almost perfect agreements and allowed for threshold-based plaque segmentation on the removable prostheses. There was substantial agreement between DSLR and smartphone assessment of prosthesis plaque area coverage as determined by a semi-automated planimetric assessment. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE This semi-automated planimetric assessment method has implications for monitoring removable prosthesis hygiene initiatives by offering a valid, reliable, and quantitative method of assessment with potential use in managed care and community settings.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) are considered to have a multi-factorial aetiology and their management is affected by a range of variables perhaps most importantly clinical judgement. The aim of this study was to elicit information from practicing dentists, using interviews, to explore their understanding of NCCL aetiology, the decision-making criteria of when to restore, and the restorative techniques used to restore NCCLs. This may help identify gaps or anomalies in our understanding to inform future research and clinical practice for the management of NCCLs. METHODS An interview guide was developed from a literature search which formed 2 domains framed around understanding and management of NCCLs based on: understanding of diagnosis and aetiology, and factors affecting decision making for management. Practicing dentists with more than 10 years of experience were purposively recruited to conduct in-depth, semi-structured interviews. Fifteen interviews were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. A thematic content analysis was conducted and the results analysed. RESULTS From the thematic analysis, 2 domains were identified. In the domain of "diagnosis and aetiology", while participants have similar understanding and methods of diagnosing NCCL, most stated NCCLs in a patient were caused by a "main aetiology" such as "abrasion", "abfraction" while few described the inter-relationship of these aetiological factors. In the domain of "factors affecting decision making". "Patient reported symptoms" and "lesion dimension" were the main factors that affected participants' decision to provide restorative or non-restorative management. However, a "restorative threshold" was not able to be identified. CONCLUSION There was notable variety in participants' understanding of the aetiology, management, and treatment of NCCLs, particularly the restorative threshold of when to treat. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The variability demonstrates the need to have a clearer understanding of the key elements that affect the management of NCCLs and better information to support the decision of when to treat.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study compared natural root caries lesions with artificial root caries lesions prepared with one of the two demineralising solutions. METHODS Twelve natural root caries lesions on upper incisors and 24 artificial root lesions were prepared on sound root surfaces using 50 mM acetic acid, 1.5 mM CaCl2 , 0.9 mM KH2 PO4 at pH 5.0 or 80 mL/L Noverite K-702 polyacrylate solution, 500 mg/L hydroxyapatite, 0.1 mol/L lactic acid at pH 4.8 (n = 12/group) for 96 hours. Lesions were scanned using micro-CT. Inciso-gingival oriented images were analysed and mineral density calculated at 7.5 μm increments from the surface to 225-μm deep. Sectioned lesions were analysed by Knoop microhardness up to 250 μm from the lesion surface. Data were analysed by the Dunn's test with Bonferroni correction. RESULTS Natural and artificial lesion mean mineral densities were not statistically different (P > 0.05). Mineral density from the surface to 75 μm was greater in natural lesions and from 150 to 225 μm was greater in artificial lesions (P < 0.05). Microhardness values were statistically higher in artificial lesions (P < 0.05); no difference was found among artificial lesions produced by the two solutions (P > 0.05). Mineral density and microhardness of natural and artificial root caries are different from each other. A greater mineralized surface layer existed on natural lesions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study utilised an Artificial Intelligence (AI) method, namely 3D-Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Network (3D-DCGAN), which is one of the true 3D machine learning methods, as an automatic algorithm to design a dental crown. METHODS Six hundred sets of digital casts containing mandibular second premolars and their adjacent and antagonist teeth obtained from healthy personnel were machine-learned using 3D-DCGAN. Additional 12 sets of data were used as the test dataset, whereas the natural second premolars in the test dataset were compared with the designs in (1) 3D-DCGAN, (2) CEREC Biogeneric, and (3) CAD for morphological parameters of 3D similarity, cusp angle, occlusal contact point number and area, and in silico fatigue simulations with finite element (FE) using lithium disilicate material. RESULTS The 3D-DCGAN design and natural teeth had the lowest discrepancy in morphology compared with the other groups (root mean square value = 0.3611). The Biogeneric design showed a significantly (p < 0.05) higher cusp angle (67.11°) than that of the 3D-DCGAN design (49.43°) and natural tooth (54.05°). No significant difference was observed in the number and area of occlusal contact points among the four groups. FE analysis showed that the 3D-DCGAN design had the best match to the natural tooth regarding the stress distribution in the crown. The 3D-DCGAN design was subjected to 26.73 MPa and the natural tooth was subjected to 23.97 MPa stress at the central fossa area under physiological occlusal force (300 N); the two groups showed similar fatigue lifetimes (F-N curve) under simulated cyclic loading of 100-400 N. Designs with Biogeneric or technician would yield respectively higher or lower fatigue lifetime than natural teeth. SIGNIFICANCE This study demonstrated that 3D-DCGAN could be utilised to design personalised dental crowns with high accuracy that can mimic both the morphology and biomechanics of natural teeth.

OBJECTIVES To evaluate and compare the proteomic profile of acquired pellicle on smooth bovine tooth and tooth-coloured restorative materials, including resin composite (RC), glass ionomer cement (GIC), and casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate modified GIC (CPP-ACP GIC). METHODS Two-hour in situ pellicles on tooth/materials specimens mounted in oral appliances worn by ten healthy adults were investigated. Pellicle proteins and corresponding unstimulated whole saliva were quantitatively analysed through liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. RESULTS Significantly higher amounts of protein were adsorbed onto tooth surface than restorative materials tested (4.11 ± 0.69 vs. 2.54 ± 0.38/2.98 ± 0.80/3.01 ± 0.37 µg, RC/GIC/CPP-ACP GIC). From the ten participants, 1,444 (487-1,086/person), 1,454 (645-1,051/person), 1,731 (454-1,475/person), or 1,597 (423-1,261/person) pellicle proteins were detected at least once on bovine tooth, RC, GIC, or CPP-ACP GIC, respectively, and with 1,072 (304-793/person) salivary proteins identified. Comparative quantification revealed minor differences between tooth and restorative materials pellicle profiles. High inter-individual variations in pellicle protein composition were demonstrated. Compared to the salivary protein profile, 214/57 proteins showed significantly increased/decreased abundance in pellicle formed on at least one substrate (fold change > 3.325/fold change < 0.301). Gene Ontology enrichment analysis showed some pellicle proteins detected with increased affinity to tooth/material surface were identified as being related to "calcium-dependent protein binding" or "cell-cell adhesion mediator activity". CONCLUSION Similar protein quantity and composition was observed in 2 h in situ pellicles formed on different smooth restorative material surfaces. The proteomic profile of pellicles appeared distinct from that of the corresponding unstimulated whole saliva. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Host backgrounds appeared more influential on the proteomic profile of the in situ acquired pellicle than the underlying substrate characteristics among systemically and orally healthy adults. Pellicle proteins preferentially adsorbed on tooth/materials were putatively associated with calcium ion homeostasis or host-microbiota interaction.

Abstract
This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the characterizations of bioactive glass (BAG)-loaded dental resin-based composite materials. Online databases (Web of Science, PubMed, and Science Direct) were used to collect data published from January 2011 to January 2022. Only BAG-containing resin adhesive and resin restorative composites are discussed in this narrative review. BAG-loaded resin composites exhibit excellent mineralization ability reflecting enhanced ion release, pH elevation, and apatite formation, especially regarding high BAG loading. This aids the anti-demineralization and remineralization of teeth. Furthermore, BAG-loaded resin composites demonstrated in vitro biocompatibility and antibacterial performance. It has been suggested that BAG fillers with small particle sizes and no more than 20 wt% in terms of loading amount should be used to guarantee the appropriate mechanical properties of resin composites. However, most of these studies focused on one or some aspects using different resin systems, BAG types, and BAG amounts. As such, this makes the comparison difficult, and it is essential to find an optimal balance between different properties. BAG-loaded resin composites can be regarded as bioactive materials, which present major benefits in dentistry, especially their capability in the bacterial inhibition, cell biocompatibility, anti-demineralization, and remineralization of teeth.

Abstract
Purpose Fiber-reinforced composites (FRCs) have received considerable attention, owing to their potential use in dental prostheses or bone fracture fixation applications. The aim of this systematic review was to analyze and report the biological properties of FRCs reported in the existing literature.Study selections A systematic search of four databases (PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane library) was performed to identify all relevant studies published between 1962 and 2019. The search was limited to laboratory-based studies published in English. Citation mining was also performed through cross-referencing of included studies and hand searching of relevant journals.Results A total of 1283 potentially relevant articles were initially identified, and thirty-three articles were full-text screened. In the final ten studies included for review, four investigated bacterial adhesion and growth abilities on FRCs, four investigated the fibroblastic cytotoxicity of different surface-treated FRCs, and two investigated the osseointegration between bone and FRCs. Owing to the heterogeneity of fiber types, FRC-coating, and lack of standardized testing protocols, a meta-analysis was not feasible. The included studies indicated that glass fibers, and in particular E-glass fibers, are superior to ceramics and other FRCs in terms of bacterial adherence, fibroblast cytotoxicity, and cell viability.Conclusions Glass-fiber-reinforced composites are cytocompatible materials that possess satisfactory biological properties and can be used in dental prosthesis and craniofacial implants. Further research is necessary to regulate the matrix ion release/degradation of FRCs to prolong the initially demonstrated properties.

Abstract
Glass ionomer cements (GICs) are considered the material of choice for restoration of root carious lesions (RCLs). When bonding to demineralized dentin, the collapse of dentinal collagen during restorative treatment may pose challenges. Considering its acidic nature and collagen biomodification effects, proanthocyanidin (PAC) could be potentially used as a dentin conditioner to remove the smear layer while simultaneously acting to biomodify the dentinal collagen involved in the bonding interface. In this study, 6.5% w/v PAC was used as a conditioner for sound (SD) and laboratory demineralized (DD) root dentin before bonding to resin-modified GIC (FII), casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP)-modified GIC (FVII), or a high-viscosity GIC (FIX). Root dentin conditioned with deionized distilled water (DDW) or polyacrylic acid (PAA) served as controls. Results indicated FII showed higher shear bond strength (SBS) on SD than the other 2 GICs, especially in PAA-conditioned samples; FIX showed significantly higher SBS than FII and FVII on PAA- or PAC-conditioned DD. In each category of GIC, PAA and PAC did not have a significant influence on SBS in most cases compared to DDW except for a significant decrease in PAC-conditioned SD bonded to FII and a significant increase in PAA-conditioned DD bonded to FIX. The bonding interface between GIC and SD was generally more resistant to the acid-base challenge than DD. Although the alterations in failure modes indicated a compromised interfacial interaction between GICs and PAC-treated root dentin, biomodification effects of PAC on dentin were observed from Raman microspectroscopy analysis in terms of the changes in mineral-to-matrix ratio and hydroxyproline-to-proline ratio of dentin adjacent to the bonding interface, especially of DD. Results from this study also indicated the possibility of using in situ characterization such as Raman microspectroscopy as a complementary approach to SBS test to investigate the integrity of the bonding interface.

Abstract
Studies on small quantity, highly complex protein samples, such as salivary pellicle, have been enabled by recent major technological and analytical breakthroughs. Advances in mass spectrometry-based computational proteomics such as Multidimensional Protein Identification Technology have allowed precise identification and quantification of complex protein samples on a proteome-wide scale, which has enabled the determination of corresponding genes and cellular functions at the protein level. The latter was achieved via protein-protein interaction mapping with Gene Ontology annotation. In recent years, the application of these technologies has broken various barriers in small-quantity-complex-protein research such as salivary pellicle. This review provides a concise summary of contemporary proteomic techniques contributing to (1) increased complex protein (up to hundreds) identification using minute sample sizes (µg level), (2) precise protein quantification by advanced stable isotope labelling or label-free approaches and (3) the emerging concepts and techniques regarding computational integration, such as the Gene Ontology Consortium and protein-protein interaction mapping. The latter integrates the structural, genomic, and biological context of proteins and genes to predict protein interactions and functional connections in a given biological context. The same technological breakthroughs and computational integration concepts can also be applied to other low-volume oral protein complexes such as gingival crevicular or peri-implant sulcular fluids.

Abstract
Immune responses triggered by implant abutment surfaces contributed by surface-adsorbed proteins are critical in clinical implant integration. How material surface-adsorbed proteins relate to host immune responses remain unclear. This study aimed to profile and address the immunological roles of surface-adsorbed salivary proteins on conventional implant abutment materials. Standardized polished bocks (5 × 5 × 1 mm3) were prepared from titanium and feldspathic ceramic. Salivary acquired pellicle formed in vitro was examined by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and gene ontology (GO) analysis to identify and characterize the adsorbed proteins. Out of 759 proteins identified from pooled saliva samples, 396 were found to be attached to the two materials tested-369 on titanium and 298 on ceramic, with 281 common to both. GO annotation of immune processes was undertaken to form a protein-protein interaction network, and 14 hub proteins (≥6 interaction partners) (coding genes: B2M, C3, CLU, DEFA1, HSP90AA1, HSP90AB1, LTF, PIGR, PSMA2, RAC1, RAP1A, S100A8, S100A9, and SLP1) were identified as the key proteins connecting multiple (6-9) immune processes. The results offered putative immunological prospects of implant abutment material surface-adsorbed salivary proteins, which could potentially underpin the dynamic nature of implant-mucosal/implant-microbial interactions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study investigated the hardness and color stability of five resin composites subjected to different polishing methods following immersion in distilled water or lactic acid for up to three months. METHODS AND MATERIALS Three nanohybrid, Paradigm (3M ESPE), Estelite Sigma Quick (Tokuyama), Ice (SDI), and two microhybrid, Filtek P60 and Filtek Z250, composites were examined. Disc-shaped specimens (10×1.5 mm) were prepared and immersed in distilled water for 24 hours then polished using either silicon carbide paper, the Shofu polishing system or were left unpolished (control). The CIE values and microhardness were determined using a spectrophotometer and digital Vickers hardness tester, respectively (n=10) after one, 45, and 90 days of storage in distilled water or lactic acid. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance, Tukey test, and Pearson correlation coefficient. RESULTS Ice exhibited the greatest color change, yet Paradigm and Filtek P60 demonstrated the least. Overall, discoloration of tested materials was multifactorial and the effect of storage media depended on the material, polishing method and time interval. The greatest hardness was obtained for Paradigm and the lowest for Estelite. Hardness was found to be significantly higher in lactic acid after 45 days (p=0.014) and even higher after 90 days (p<0.001) compared with distilled water. CONCLUSIONS An acidic environment did not adversely affect color stability or microhardness of the resin composites. There was a significantly mild reverse correlation between hardness and color change in both storage media.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Evaluate effect of quaternary ammonium silane (QAS) cavity disinfectant on cariogenic biofilm. MATERIALS AND METHODS Single- (Streptococcus mutans or Lactobacillus acidophilus), dual- (Streptococcus mutans/Lactobacillus Acidophilus), and multi-species (Streptococcus mutans, Actinomyces naeslundii, and Streptococcus sanguis) biofilms were grown on acid-etched dentine discs. Biofilms were incubated (120 min/37 °C) and allowed to grow for 3 days anaerobically. Discs (no treatment) served as control (group 1). Groups II, III, IV, and V were then treated with 2% chlorhexidine, and 2%, 5%, and 10% QAS (20 s). Discs were returned to well plates with 300 μL of bacterial suspension and placed in anaerobic incubator at 37 °C and biofilms redeveloped for 4 days. Confocal microscopy, Raman, CFU, and MTT assay were performed. RESULTS Raman peaks show shifts at 1450 cm-1, 1453 cm-1, 1457 cm-1, 1460 cm-1, and 1462 cm-1 for control, 2% CHX, 2%, 5%, and 10% QAS groups in multi-species biofilms. There was reduction of 484 cm-1 band in 10% QAS group. CLSM revealed densely clustered green colonies in control group and red confluent QAS-treated biofilms with significantly lower log CFU for single/dual species. Metabolic activities of Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus decreased with increasing QAS exposure time. CONCLUSION Quaternary ammonium silanes possess antimicrobial activities and inhibit growth of cariogenic biofilms. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Available data demonstrated use of QAS as potential antibacterial cavity disinfectant in adhesive dentistry. Experimental QAS can effectively eliminate caries-forming bacteria, when used inside a prepared cavity, and can definitely overcome problems associated with present available cavity disinfectants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this review was to assess the methodologies used in previously published prospective randomized clinical trials on chemomechanical caries removal and to conduct a meta-analysis to quantify the differences in the excavation time between chemomechanical and conventional caries removal methods. METHODS An electronic search was performed using Scopus, PubMed, EBSCO host, and Cochrane Library databases. The following categories were excluded during the assessment process: non-English studies published before 2000, animal studies, review articles, laboratory studies, case reports, and nonrandomized or retrospective clinical trials. The methodologies of the selected clinical trials were assessed. Furthermore, the reviewed clinical trials were subjected to meta-analysis for quantifying the differences in excavation time between the chemomechanical and the conventional caries removal techniques. RESULTS Only 19 randomized clinical trials fit the inclusion criteria of this systematic review. None of the 19 reviewed trials completely fulfilled Delphi's ideal criteria for quality assessment of randomized clinical trials. The meta-analysis results revealed that the shortest mean excavation time was recorded for rotary caries excavation (2.99±0.001 minutes), followed by the enzyme-based chemomechanical caries removal method (6.36±0.08 minutes) and the the hand excavation method (atraumatic restorative technique; 6.98±0.17 minutes). The longest caries excavation time was recorded for the sodium hypochlorite-based chemomechanical caries removal method (8.12±0.02 minutes). CONCLUSIONS It was found that none of the current reviewed trials fulfilled all the ideal requirements of clinical trials. Furthermore, the current scientific evidence shows that the sodium hypochlorite-based (Carisolv) chemomechanical caries removal method was more time consuming when compared to the enzyme-based (Papacarie) chemomechanical and the conventional caries removal methods. Further prospective randomized controlled clinical trials evaluating the long-term follow-up of papain-treated permanent teeth are needed.

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of conventional and acidified casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate-containing crèmes (CPP-ACP and ACPP-ACP) on dentin permeability (DP) before and after acid challenge, using a fluid-flow measuring device and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) examination. Fifty dentin discs were prepared from intact human third molars. Each tooth was sectioned 3 mm above and below the cementoenamel junction. The smear layer was removed to expose the dentin and dentinal tubules. For fluid-flow measurement, 20 specimens were used and divided into two groups: (a) CPP-ACP (pH=7) and (b) ACPP-ACP (pH=2). The dentin surfaces were treated with the crème for five minutes daily for two weeks, and then an acid challenge was performed using 6% citric acid. Under simulated pulpal pressure, DP was measured at baseline, five minutes, two weeks, and after acid challenge. The remaining specimens were prepared and examined using SEM to investigate dentinal tubule occlusion. DP was not significantly different between the two CPP-ACP-containing crèmes at any test period (p≥0.05). DP after two weeks or acid challenge was significantly lower than that at five minutes (p<0.05). The results were consistent with the SEM micrographs that presented patent dentinal tubules after a five-minute application and partial blockage of dentinal tubules after the two-week application. The dentinal tubules remained partially occluded after acid challenge. Using conventional and acid-modified CPP-ACP-containing crèmes for two weeks decreased DP and partially occluded the dentinal tubules, which resisted acid challenge.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The amounts of calcium salt of 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP-Ca salt) and dicalcium phosphate dihydride (DCPD) with an amorphous phase produced by the demineralisation of enamel and dentin were determined using commercial MDP-based 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA)-containing and HEMA-free all-in-one adhesives. The effect of the amount of MDP-Ca salt produced on bonding performance to enamel and dentin was then characterized. METHODS Three types of commercial HEMA-containing adhesives (Scotchbond Universal Adhesive, Clearfil Tri-S Bond ND, Clearfil Tri-S Bond ND Quick), a commercial HEMA-free adhesive (G-Bond Plus) and an experimental HEMA-free adhesive were used. The reactant residues of each adhesive were prepared after interacting with enamel and dentin samples for 60 s. The amounts of MDP-Ca salt and amorphous DCPD produced were determined using a phosphorous-31 nuclear magnetic resonance technique. Enamel and dentin bond strengths were measured for each adhesive, with and without thermocycling. RESULTS The amounts of MDP-Ca salt and amorphous DCPD formed after interacting with enamel and dentin differed among the five adhesives and were independent of their pH values. Enamel showed a strong positive-correlation of the bond strength of the all-in-one adhesives to the amount of MDP-Ca salt produced, however, the dentin showed a weak negative-correlation. CONCLUSION The HEMA-free all-in-one adhesives showed a greater efficacy to demineralise the enamel and dentin than the HEMA-containing all-in-one adhesives. The dentin showed a different effect of the amount of MDP-Ca salt produced on the bonding performance compared with enamel. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The enamel bond strength of MDP-based all-in-one adhesives strongly contributes to the demineralisation efficacy by the incorporation of MDP, in contrast to the dentin bond strength. However, the efficacy of MDP-based all-in-one adhesives to demineralise the enamel and dentin is not directly related to the pH value of the MDP-based all-in-one adhesive.

Abstract
The aim of this review was to compile recent evidence related to nanofilled resin composite materials regarding the properties and clinical performance. Special attention was given to mechanical properties, such as strength, hardness, abrasive wear, water sorption, and solubility. The clinical performance of nanocomposite materials compared with hybrid resin composites was also addressed in terms of retention and success rates, marginal adaptation, color match, and surface roughness. A search of English peer-reviewed dental literature (2003-2017) from PubMed and MEDLINE databases was conducted using the terms "nanocomposites" or "nanofilled resin composite" and "clinical evaluation." The list was screened, and 82 papers that were relevant to the objectives of this work were included in the review. Mechanical properties of nanocomposites are generally comparable to those of hybrid composites but higher than microfilled composites. Nanocomposites presented lower abrasive wear than hybrids but higher sorption values. Their clinical performance was comparable to that of hybrid composites.

Abstract
This aim of this review is to explore the current research related to crosslinking agents used on dentine. A systematic search of publications in PubMed and Web of Science databases was performed. Further retrieval was conducted using the search terms of specific names of crosslinkers. Reviews, conference abstracts, dissertation and theses, non-English articles, studies of intrinsic crosslinking of dentine, studies of adhesives without specific crosslinker components, studies of crosslinker applications in other collagenous tissues or tooth-like structures and irrelevant studies were excluded. Manual screening was conducted on the bibliographies of remaining papers to identify other relevant articles. One hundred and one articles were included in this systematic review and full texts were retrieved. Both synthetic and naturally derived crosslinkers have been found to exhibit significant effects in biomodification of dentine via their multiple interactions with the dentine matrix. A stable matrix network or a durable hybrid layer in dentine bonding could be achieved, where the dentine collagen fibrils show improved biochemical and biomechanical properties and enzymatic biodegradation is reduced. Although no crosslinkers have been tested in clinical trials, extensive research has been conducted in laboratory studies to investigate their potential applicability for inhibition of demineralisation and/or promotion of remineralisation, caries prevention as well as improvement of bonding performance of adhesive systems. Further studies are needed to develop the feasibility for clinical use, reduce side effects as well as explore mechanisms of action and long-term effectiveness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A systematic review was undertaken to determine the clinical outcomes of resin modified glass-ionomer cement or glass-ionomer cement-resin composite (RMGIC/GIC-RC) laminate restorations and flowable resin composite (FRC)-lined RC restorations compared to that of non-laminate RC restorations. METHODS Electronic databases were searched and filtered for relevant papers by assessing titles, abstracts and full-text articles. Randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) were included, comparing the clinical performance of RMGIC/GIC-RC laminate restorations and FRC-lined restorations with RC restorations as the control. The articles were categorized and critically appraised. Raw data were used for a fixed effects meta-analysis. RESULTS Thirteen articles were included in the review. Five evaluated FRC-lined restorations, and eight studies evaluated RMGIC/GIC-RC laminate restorations, comparing with non-laminate RC restorations. Three of eight RMGIC/GIC-RC laminate restorations assessed only postoperative sensitivity. A meta-analysis could only be conducted in three studies with the FRC-lined restorations as the intervention. The meta-analysis found no significant difference in clinical failures between FRC-lined RC restorations and RC restorations with no lining (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Based on current clinical evidence, a FRC lining is no more advantageous than RC restorations with no FRC lining. More long-term RCTs are required, particularly for evaluating RMGIC/GIC-RC laminate restorations.

SUMMARY
In this laboratory study, the microtensile bond strengths (μTBS) of resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RM-GIC) to sound and artificial caries–affected bovine root dentin (ACAD) using three different conditioning agents were evaluated after 24 hours and three months. The fractured interface was examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Specimens were created on bovine root dentin that was embedded in epoxy resin. For the ACAD specimens, artificial carious lesions were created. The RM-GIC (Fuji II LC) was applied either directly (no treatment), after application of self conditioner, cavity conditioner, or 17% ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) applied for 60 seconds, on sound dentin and ACAD, then light cured. They were stored in artificial saliva for 24 hours or three months. Following this, the specimens were cut into sticks for the μTBS test, and the failure mode of the debonded specimens was examined by using SEM. Pretest failures were excluded from the statistical analysis of the μTBS values because of their high incidence in some groups. Results showed that the μTBS values were significantly affected by the dentin substrate as well as the conditioning agent. Self conditioner provided the highest and most stable μTBS values, while cavity conditioner showed stable μTBS values on sound dentin. Both self conditioner and cavity conditioner had significantly higher μTBS values than the no treatment groups. EDTA conditioning reduced the μTBS after three months to sound dentin, while it showed 100% pretest failure with ACAD for both storage periods.

Abstract
Objective This study evaluated the effect of grape seed extract (GSE) incorporation on the mechanical properties, water sorption, solubility, and GSE release from the experimental adhesive resins. Material and Methods An experimental comonomer mixture, consisting of 40% Bis-GMA, 30% Bis MP, 28% HEMA, 0.26% camphorquinone and 1% EDMAB, was used to prepare four GSE-incorporated adhesive resins at concentrations of 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 wt%. The neat resin without GSE was used as the control. Six resin beams (25 mm x 2 mm x 2 mm) per group were prepared for flexural strength and modulus of elasticity evaluations using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. Five disks (6 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness) per group were used for microhardness measurements using a Leitz micro-hardness tester with Leica Qgo software. Five disks (7 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness) per group were prepared and stored in deionized water for 28 days. Water sorption, solubility, and GSE release in deionized water were calculated for each GSE-incorporated adhesive at the end of 28th day. Data was evaluated using one-way ANOVA and Tukey multiple comparisons. Results Flexural strength, modulus of elasticity and microhardness of GSE-incorporated adhesive decreased significantly with incorporation of 1.5% of GSE (p<0.05). Addition of GSE had no effect on the water sorption of the adhesive resins (p=0.33). The solubility of the resin also increased significantly with incorporation of 1.5% of GSE (p<0.05). Quantities of GSE release increased with increased concentration of GSE in the adhesive resin. Conclusion Up to 1% of GSE can be incorporated into a dental adhesive resin without interfering with the mechanical properties or solubility of the resins.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Resin infiltration may alter the mechanical properties of enamel hypomineralised lesions (HL); however, variable surface layer (SL) thickness may affect resin penetration. AIMS To determine the thickness of the SL of HL and to investigate the effect of resin infiltration on the mechanical properties of HL. DESIGN The thickness of the SL over HL was determined using polarised light microscopy. Etching time using 15% HCl gel to remove the SL of 52 samples was determined. Selected HL and control areas of 21 teeth were infiltrated with Icon® resin infiltrant, and cross-sectional Knoop microhardness (KHN) measurements were recorded before and after resin infiltration. RESULTS Ninety-six point five per cent of HL had a detectable SL with mean thickness of 58 ± 29 μm. Application of HCl for 120 s produced a mean MIH erosion depth of 58 ± 12 μm. Eleven of 21 samples had evidence of infiltration using visual examination. The infiltrant penetrated some of the HL leading to an increase in KHN (111 ± 75 KHN) which, when compared to adjacent non-infiltrated HL (96 ± 52 KHN), was not statistically significantly different (P = 0.56). CONCLUSIONS There was marked variation in the SL thickness of HL. Resin infiltration of HL did not increase microhardness significantly.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To review the evidence regarding the mechanisms of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) for arresting caries. METHODS A literature search was conducted using the keywords silver diamine fluoride, and its alternative names, in seven databases: PubMed, Embase and Scopus (English); China National Knowledge Infrastructure (Chinese); Bilioteca Virtual em Saude (Portuguese); Biblioteca Virtual en Salud Espana (Spanish); and Ichushi-Web (Japanese). The titles and abstracts were screened. Full texts were retrieved for publications that studied mechanisms of actions of SDF, including its effects on remineralisation of carious lesions and on cariogenic bacteria. RESULTS A total of 1,123 publications were identified. Twenty-nine articles were included and they investigated the effect of SDF on cariogenic bacteria and dental hard tissues. Eleven studies investigated the antibacterial properties of SDF. They found that SDF was bactericidal to cariogenic bacteria, mainly Streptococcus mutans. It inhibited the growth of cariogenic biofilms on teeth. Twenty studies reported the remineralisation of demineralised enamel or dentine by SDF. They found that mineral loss of demineralised enamel and dentine was reduced after SDF treatment. A highly mineralised surface rich in calcium and phosphate was formed on arrested carious lesions. Four studies examined the effect of SDF on dentine collagen. They found that SDF inhibited collagenases (matrix metalloproteinases and cysteine cathepsins) and protected dentine collagen from destruction. CONCLUSION SDF is a bactericidal agent and reduces the growth of cariogenic bacteria. It inhibits demineralisation and promotes the remineralisation of demineralised enamel and dentine. It also hampers degradation of the dentine collagen.

Abstract
Casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) nanocomplexes have been shown to prevent demineralization and promote remineralization of enamel subsurface lesions in animal and in situ caries models. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of incorporating CPP-ACP into a self-cured glass-ionomer cement (GIC). Incorporation of 1.56% w/w CPP-ACP into the GIC significantly increased microtensile bond strength (33%) and compressive strength (23%) and significantly enhanced the release of calcium, phosphate, and fluoride ions at neutral and acidic pH. MALDI mass spectrometry also showed casein phosphopeptides from the CPP-ACP nanocomplexes to be released. The release of CPP-ACP and fluoride from the CPP-ACP-containing GIC was associated with enhanced protection of the adjacent dentin during acid challenge in vitro.

Abstract
SUMMARY
Objectives: This study investigated cuspal deformation in teeth restored with different types of adhesive materials with and without a base.
Methods: Mesio-occluso-distal slot cavities of moderately large dimension were prepared on extracted maxillary premolars (n=24). Teeth were assigned to one of four groups and restored with either a sonic-activated bulk-fill resin composite (RC) (SonicFill), or a conventional nanohybrid RC (Herculite Ultra). The base materials used were a flowable nanofilled RC (Premise Flowable) and a high-viscosity resin-modified glass-ionomer cement (RMGIC) (Riva Light-Cure HV). Cuspal deflection was measured with two direct current differential transformers, each contacting a buccal and palatal cusp. Cuspal movements were recorded during and after restoration placement. Data for the buccal and palatal cusp deflections were combined to give the net cuspal deflection.
Results: Data varied widely. All teeth experienced net inward cuspal movement. No statistically significant differences in cuspal deflection were found among the four test groups.
Conclusions: The use of a flowable RC or an RMGIC in closed-laminate restorations produced the same degree of cuspal movement as restorations filled with only a conventional nanohybrid or bulk-fill RC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study evaluated the antimicrobial effect of a silver diamine fluoride (SDF)/potassium iodide (KI) product (Riva Star) on the viability of intratubular bacteria. METHODS Forty-five dentine discs prepared from caries-free maxillary premolars were randomly divided into nine groups. Group 1 (negative control) contained non-infected sound dentine discs. The remaining discs were infected with Streptococcus mutans suspension and received dentine treatments as follows: Group 2 (positive control), discs were left untreated; Group 3 SDF/KI (Riva Star); Group 4 chlorhexidine (CHX); Group 5 CHX+SDF/KI; Group 6 Carisolv; Group 7 Carisolv+SDF/KI; Group 8 Papacarie, and Group 9 Papacarie+SDF/KI. The discs were then fractured into two halves, stained with fluorescent LIVE/DEAD stain and observed using confocal laser scanning microscopy. RESULTS SDF/KI exhibited a potent antibacterial effect, as represented by a significantly higher percentage of dead bacteria, in comparison with Carisolv and Papacarie (p<0.05). The application of SDF/KI following Carisolv and Papacarie chemomechanical caries removel gels significantly reduced the viability of intra-tubular bacteria in these groups. CONCLUSIONS The use of the silver diamine fluoride/potassium iodide product is effective in reducing the numbers of S. mutans in dentinal tubules infected with this organism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study evaluated the effect of: (1) chemomechanical caries removal (CMCR); (2) dentine surface treatments and (3) dentine substrates on adhesion of resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) adhesives. METHODS One hundred and twenty permanent molars exhibiting moderate cavitation on the occlusal surface into dentine were used. Seventy-five carious molars were used for bond strength testing; the remaining 45 for micromorphological evaluation of the bonded interface. Caries was excavated with NaOCl-based CMCR (Carisolv), enzyme-based CMCR (Papacarie), or conventional rotary caries removal methods. Dentine surface treatment was performed using 37% phosphoric acid, 25-30% PAA or 20% PAA + 3% AlCl3 . RESULTS Three-way ANOVA revealed that all three factors 'caries removal methods', 'dentine surface treatments' and 'dentine substrates' did not significantly affect bond strength (p > 0.05). Scanning electron microscopy micrographs showed that the acid-base resistant layer was thicker in caries-affected dentine compared to sound dentine. CONCLUSIONS NaOCl- and enzyme-based CMCR methods have no adverse effect on adhesion of RMGIC adhesives to sound and caries-affected dentine. Dentine surface treatment with 37% phosphoric acid for 5 s has no negative effect on bonding of RMGIC adhesives to dentine compared with using polyacrylic acid for 10 s. RMGIC adhesives bonded well to both sound and caries-affected dentine.

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate the use of phosphoric acid as a surface treatment compared to traditional conditioning agents to dentine bonded with resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGIC) adhesives. METHODS Forty human molars were utilized in microtensile bond strength testing, while another 16 were used for evaluation of the bonded interface with scanning electron microscopy. Three RMGIC adhesives were evaluated: Fuji Bond LC (GC Corp); Riva Bond LC (SDI Ltd); and Ketac N100 (3M-ESPE). Surface treatments were 37% phosphoric acid (5 s) or 25-30% polyacrylic acid (PAA) (10 s), or the manufacturer's method - Fuji Bond LC: Cavity Conditioner (20% PAA + 3% AlCl3 10 s) or Ketac N100 primer: Ketac Nano priming agent (15 s). Teeth were finished with 600-grit SiC paper, surfaces treated and bonded with RMGIC adhesive and stored in distilled water for 24 h then subjected to microtensile bond strength testing. RESULTS Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed adhesion was affected by the 'type of RMGIC adhesive' and 'method of dentine surface treatment' (p < 0.05). The microtensile bond strength of Ketac N100 primer groups was lower than Fuji Bond LC and Riva Bond LC (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS For RMGIC adhesives a brief etch with phosphoric acid does not adversely effect short-term bond strengths, but is no better than traditional conditioning with PAA.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the effects of a commercial zirconia primer (Choice or RelyX Unicem) on shear bond strength (SBS) of two different resin composite cements - Choice (a conventional bis-GMA-based resin cement) and RelyX Unicem (self-adhesive resin cement) - to zirconia. MATERIALS AND METHODS Zirconia blocks were manufactured and randomly divided into 5 main groups (n = 20) that received surface treatments and cements as follows: no surface treatment, Choice and RelyX Unicem (groups C and U, resp.); tribochemical silica coating followed by silanization, Choice (group SSC); application of a zirconia primer, Choice and RelyX Unicem (groups ZC and ZU, resp.). Light-curing composite resin cylinders were prepared and bonded on the prepared zirconia blocks using the two different resin cements. Half of the specimens in each group were stored in water for 24 h, and half were aged by 50 days of water storage followed by thermocycling (12,000 cycles between 5°C and 55°C). Thereafter, all of them were submitted to the SBS test. Fourier transmission infrared (FT-IR) spectrum analysis and gas mass spectrometry (MS) analysis were adopted for characterization of the zirconia primer. RESULTS Statistical analysis of the SBS test showed that group C presented the lowest SBS values and group SSC the highest (p < 0.01). Artificial aging exerted no influence on the SBS of groups U, SSC, ZC, or ZU. FT-IR analysis suggested that benzene rings and carboxylic groups exist in the zirconia primer. MS analysis detected that 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, triethylamine, ethyl-4-dimethylaminobenzoate, ethanol, and water are contained in the primer. CONCLUSION The zirconia primer and self-adhesive resin cement increased the SBS of zirconia.

Abstract
SUMMARY
This was an in vitro study to evaluate the effect of sodium ascorbate on the microshear bond strength (MSBS) of resin composite to sodium perborate–bleached dentin. Molar dentin sections were divided into six groups: 1) control, 2) sodium perborate (SP) bleach and immediate bonding, 3) SP and 30 second sodium ascorbate (SA); 4) SP and 1 minute SA; 5) SP and 2 minute SA; and 6) SP and 7 day delay before bonding. They were further divided into two-step self-etching (Clearfil SE Bond) or all-in-one self-etching (Xeno IV) adhesive systems. Resin composite microtubes were bonded according to dentin location—center, pulp horn, and peripheral positions—and an MSBS test was carried out. Failure mode was determined using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. There were no significant differences between the treatment types/groups. MSBSs were significantly higher for two-step self-etching adhesive compared with all-in-one self-etching adhesive (p=0.028). For the all-in-one adhesive, MSBSs at the center and pulp horn positions were significantly lower than the peripheral positions (p<0.001). All-in-one groups had significantly more adhesive failures than two-step adhesive groups (p=0.015). The odds of adhesive failure were higher at the pulp horn position than the peripheral position (p=0.004). Sodium perborate bleaching of dentin had no effect on MSBS or mode of failure for either two-step or all-in-one self-etching adhesives; therefore, the effect of sodium ascorbate was negligible. The two-step adhesive groups demonstrated the highest MSBS, and the all-in-one groups, when bonded to center and pulp horn dentin, exhibited the lowest MSBS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although various mechanical properties of tooth-coloured materials have been described, little data have been published on the effect of ageing and G-Coat Plus on the hardness and strength of the glass-ionomer cements (GICs). METHODS Specimens were prepared from one polyacid-modified resin composite (PAMRC; Freedom, SDI), one resin-modified glass-ionomer cement; (RM-GIC; Fuji II LC, GC), and one conventional glass-ionomer cement; (GIC; Fuji IX, GC). GIC and RM-GIC were tested both with and without applying G-Coat Plus (GC). Specimens were conditioned in 37 °C distilled water for either 24 hours, four and eight weeks. Half the specimens were subjected to a shear punch test using a universal testing machine; the remaining half was subjected to Vickers Hardness test. RESULTS Data analysis showed that the hardness and shear punch values were material dependent. The hardness and shear punch of the PAMRC was the highest and GIC the lowest. Applying the G-Coat Plus was associated with a significant decrease in the hardness of the materials but increase in the shear punch strength after four and eight weeks. CONCLUSIONS The mechanical properties of the restorative materials were affected by applying G-Coat Plus and distilled water immersion over time. The PAMRC was significantly stronger and harder than the RM-GIC or GIC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical performance of G-Bond all-in-one adhesive with Gradia Direct resin composite placed in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) over a five-year period. METHODS Forty-seven restorations were placed in NCCLs in 10 subjects (age 45-75 years) after written informed consent was obtained. Institutional ethical approval for the trial was obtained before recruitment. Restorations were placed according to the manufacturer's instructions and using 50% phosphoric acid to etch uncut enamel margins. Patients were recalled annually for five years and restorations reviewed for presence and marginal staining. Photographic records were obtained prior to restoration, immediately after placement and at each recall. RESULTS At five years, 6 of the original 10 subjects were available for recall, meaning 27 restoration sites could be evaluated. All restorations remained intact apart for one partial failure at four years. This resulted in a cumulative retention rate of 97.5% of restorations at five years. Marginal staining occurred around seven restorations during the study. Staining tended to be isolated to a few patients. CONCLUSIONS It was concluded that G-Bond with Gradia Direct resin composite showed excellent results over the five years of the study. This material combination seems very suitable for the restoration of NCCLs.
