Abstract
Mola mola is the largest teleost inhabiting our ocean and the presence of microplastics (MP) in this flagship species was, before this study, never described. Thus, this investigation focused on analysing MP ingestion in 53 ocean giant sunfish in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean. A total of 116 MP were found in 79% of the specimens, with a median of 1 MP.ind-1, ranging from 0 to 11 MP.ind-1. Seasonal differences were observed, with more fibers registered in specimens caught in autumn. Among the different size classes observed, the smallest category (<300 μm) was the most frequent (43%). Blue (43%) was the most prevalent color, followed by green (29%) and black (10%). The majority of fragments were styrene acrylic copolymer (53%), while most fibers were rayon (78%). These findings emphasize that the ocean sunfish population crossing the southern waters of Portugal is exposed to microplastic pollution and highlight the need for effective management policies to address plastic pollution in marine ecosystems.

Abstract
Tetrodotoxin (TTX) is a potent neurotoxin naturally occurring in terrestrial and marine organisms such as pufferfish. Due to the risk of TTX poisoning, fish of Tetraodontidae family and other puffer-related species must not be placed in the EU markets. This restriction applies to fish of the family Molidae even though no data on toxins’ occurrence is available. In this study, the presence of TTX and its analogues was investigated in the main edible tissue (the white muscle) and the main xenobiotics storage organ (the liver) of ocean sunfish Mola spp. (n = 13) from the South Portuguese coast. HILIC-MS/MS analyses did not reveal TTX in the analyzed samples, suggesting an inexistent or very limited risk of TTX poisoning.

Abstract
Stable isotope compositions of carbon and nitrogen (expressed as δ 13C and δ 15N) from the European common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) were measured in order to evaluate the utility of using these natural tracers throughout the Northeast Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea (NEAO-MS). Mantle tissue was obtained from S. officinalis collected from 11 sampling locations spanning a wide geographical coverage in the NEAO-MS. Significant differences of both δ 13C and δ 15N values were found among S. officinalis samples relative to sampling location. δ 13C values did not show any discernable spatial trends; however, a distinct pattern of lower δ 15N values in the Mediterranean Sea relative to the NEAO existed. Mean δ 15N values of S. officinalis in the Mediterranean Sea averaged 2.5‰ lower than conspecifics collected in the NEAO and showed a decreasing eastward trend within the Mediterranean Sea with the lowest values in the most eastern sampling locations. Results suggest δ 15N may serve as a useful natural tracer for studies on the population structure of S. officinalis as well as other marine organisms throughout the NEAO-MS.

Abstract
Trace elements are potentially critical contaminants of aquatic environments and fish, occupying upper trophic levels, are especially vulnerable to bioaccumulation. Due to public health concerns, however, data on the elemental composition of non-commercially important marine species are particularly lacking. Ocean sunfish (Mola spp.) attain a low commercial value worldwide and information on their elemental composition is limited. In this context, we examined the concentration of 11 trace elements (V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Cd and Pb) in eight tissues [brain, gills, gelatin (subcutaneous white gelatinous layer), gonads, spleen, liver, white muscle and red muscle] of 20 juvenile specimens (37.5-85.5 cm TL). Gender-related differences were solely found in the gonads and chiefly for essential elements possibly as a result of their importance in embryo development. Overall, Zn and As were the elements observed in greatest concentrations in body tissues. The considerably high presence of As should be related to the dietary preferences of juvenile ocean sunfish. Considerable inter-individual variability in the concentration of each element in any given tissue was observed, especially in the liver, likely originating from the inclusion of both benthic and pelagic prey in the diet of analysed fish. Greatest elemental loads were found in the liver and gills whereas lowest loads were observed in white muscle, brain and gelatin. Moreover, a clear distinction in elemental load and elemental composition was observed between white and red muscles, likely deriving from existing divergent metabolism-related physiological adaptations linked to their different roles in locomotion.

Abstract
Natural markers (δ13C and δ18O stable isotopes) in the cuttlebones of the European common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) were determined for individuals collected across a substantial portion of their range in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean (NEAO) and Mediterranean Sea. Cuttlebone δ13C and δ18O were quantified for core and edge material to characterize geochemical signatures associated with early (juvenile) and recent (sub-adult/adult) life-history periods, respectively. Regional shifts in cuttlebone δ13C and δ18O values were detected across the 12 sites investigated. Individuals collected from sites in the NEAO displayed more enriched δ13C and δ18O values relative to sites in the Mediterranean Sea, with the latter also showing salient differences in both markers among western, central and eastern collection areas. Classification success based on cuttlebone δ13C and δ18O values to four geographical regions (NEAO, western, central and eastern Mediterranean Sea) was relatively high, suggesting that environmental conditions in each region were distinct and produced area-specific geochemical signatures on the cuttlebones of S. officinalis. A modified δ13C and δ18O baseline was developed from sites proximal to the Strait of Gibraltar in both the NEAO and Mediterranean Sea to assess potential mixing through this corridor. Nearly, all (95%) of δ13C and δ18O signatures of S. officinalis collected in the area of the NEAO closest to the Strait of Gibraltar (Gulf of Cadiz) matched the signatures of specimens collected in the western Mediterranean, signifying potential movement and mixing of individuals through this passageway. This study extends the current application of these geochemical markers for assessing the natal origin and population connectivity of this species and potentially other taxa that inhabit this geographical area.

Abstract
Fish are frequently exposed to harmful algal blooms (HAB) and to related toxins. However, the biological effects of okadaic acid (OA), the most abundant and frequent HAB-toxin in Europe, South America and Asia, have been poorly investigated. In this study, fish swimming performance and metabolic rates were investigated in juveniles of Zebra seabream (Diplodus cervinus) exposed to OA-group toxins via dietary route, during three days. Fish fed on contaminated food accumulated up to 455.5 μg OA equiv. Kg-1. Significant lower mean critical swimming speed (Ucrit) were observed in fish orally exposed to OA (and its related isomer dinophysistoxin-1, DTX-1) than fish feeding on non-toxic diet. A tendency to higher demands of oxygen consumption was also recorded in OA-exposed fish at higher current velocities. This study indicates that fish may not be affected by OA-group toxins under basal conditions, but suggests a decrease in fitness linked to a reduction in swimming performance of fish exposed to OA under increased stimulus. OA and related toxins are suggested to have a cryptic effect on swimming performance that may be enhanced when fish deals with multiple stressors. Considering that a reduction in swimming performance may have impact on critical activities, such as foraging and escaping from predators, this study highlights the ecological risk associated with dinoflagellate toxic blooms, biotoxins food web transfer and fish contamination.

Abstract
Ocean acidification is one of the many consequences of climate change. Various studies suggest that marine organisms' behaviour will be impaired under high CO2. Here, we show that the cognitive performance of the cleaner wrasse, Labroides dimidiatus, has not suffered from the increase of CO2 from pre-industrial levels to today, and that the standing variation in CO2 tolerance offers potential for adaptation to at least 750 µatm. We acclimated cleaners over 30 days to five levels of pCO2, from pre-industrial to high future CO2 scenarios, before testing them in an ecologically relevant task-the ability to learn to prioritize an ephemeral food source over a permanent one. Fish learning abilities remained stable from pre-industrial to present-day pCO2. While performance was reduced under mid (750 µatm) and high CO2 (980 µatm) scenarios, under the former 36% of cleaners still solved the task. The presence of tolerant individuals reveals potential for adaptation, as long as selection pressure on cognitive performance is strong. However, the apparent absence of high CO2 tolerant fish, and potentially synergistic effects between various climate change stressors, renders the probability of further adaptation unlikely.

Abstract
The effects of body size and season on the elemental composition of ocean sunfish Mola mola were assessed for the first time. A total of 57 by-caught juvenile specimens measuring between 31.8 and 120.3 cm were sampled in spring and autumn. Concentrations of trace elements (three essential - Co, Cu, Zn, and three non-essential - As, Cd, Pb) were determined in five body tissues [gills, gelatin (subcutaneous white gelatinous layer), liver, white muscle and red muscle]. Elemental composition of M. mola tissues was found to vary with both body size and season. When an effect of size was verified, the most common trend was a decrease in elemental levels with increasing fish size, most likely deriving from the fast growth rate of this fish (i.e. dilution effect) and the occurrence of an ontogenetic shift in dietary preferences. Differently, Zn levels increased with fish size in both gills and red muscle, potentially deriving from a greater physiological need in those tissues as fish grow. Seasonal differences in trace element levels were observed for approximately half of the studied cases (tissue/trace element) with greater elemental concentrations being mostly found in autumn. Such pattern was most obvious in liver tissue, presumably resulting from a greater dietary elemental uptake in the end of summer/autumn. A general absence of seasonal differences was observed in the gills, white muscle and red muscle. Interestingly, a trend of enhanced concentrations in spring was observed for gelatin, potentially deriving from past long-term differences in exposure to trace elements.

Abstract
Climate change and chemical contamination are global environmental threats of growing concern for the scientific community and regulatory authorities. Yet, the impacts and interactions of both stressors (particularly ocean warming and emerging chemical contaminants) on physiological responses of marine organisms remain unclear and still require further understanding. Within this context, the main goal of this study was to assess, for the first time, the effects of warming (+ 5 °C) and accumulation of a polybrominated diphenyl ether congener (BDE-209, brominated flame retardant) through dietary exposure on energy budget of the juvenile white seabream (Diplodus sargus). Specifically, growth (G), routine metabolism (R), excretion (faecal, F and nitrogenous losses, U) and food consumption (C) were calculated to obtain the energy budget. The results demonstrated that the energy proportion spent for G dominated the mode of the energy allocation of juvenile white seabream (56.0-67.8%), especially under the combined effect of warming plus BDE-209 exposure. Under all treatments, the energy channelled for R varied around 26% and a much smaller percentage was channelled for excretion (F: 4.3-16.0% and U: 2.3-3.3%). An opposite trend to G was observed to F, where the highest percentage (16.0 ± 0.9%) was found under control temperature and BDE-209 exposure via diet. In general, the parameters were significantly affected by increased temperature and flame retardant exposure, where higher levels occurred for: i) wet weight, relative growth rate, protein and ash contents under warming conditions, ii) only for O:N ratio under BDE-209 exposure via diet, and iii) for feed efficiency, ammonia excretion rate, routine metabolic rate and assimilation efficiency under the combination of both stressors. On the other hand, decreased viscerosomatic index was observed under warming and lower fat content was observed under the combined effect of both stressors. Overall, under future warming and chemical contamination conditions, fish energy budget was greatly affected, which may dictate negative cascading impacts at population and community levels. Further research combining other climate change stressors (e.g. acidification and hypoxia) and emerging chemical contaminants are needed to better understand and forecast such biological effects in a changing ocean.

Abstract
During the last decade, several studies have shown that mitochondrial parameters, such as integrity, respiratory activity, membrane potential and ROS production are intimately linked with sperm quality. Given the limitations of conventional semen analyses in terms of predicting male fertility, an increasing number of studies are focusing on the characterization of sperm mitochondria in order to more accurately assess sperm functionality. Moreover, mitochondria from several organs, such as the liver, have been described as a powerful screening tool for drug safety, being an easy in vitro model to assess the toxicity of distinct families of compounds. Given that mitochondrial functionality is intimately related to sperm homeostasis, it has become important to understand how compounds, ranging from dietary supplements, environmental pollutants, dependency-inducing drugs to pharmacological agents (such as erectile dysfunction-targeted drugs and male contraceptives) affect sperm mitochondrial function. In this review, we discuss studies describing the effects of various chemical agents on spermatozoa, with particular emphasis on mitochondrial function. From the extensive literature analyzed, we conclude that in some cases the role of sperm mitochondria as putative predictors of sperm functionality is very obvious, while in others further studies are needed to clarify this issue.

Abstract
We describe a case of a 33-year-old Caucasian woman with right facial asymmetry and no sinonasal symptoms. She was referred to the ophthalmology department as having right palpebral ptosis. On physical examination, she presented painless enophthalmos and hypoglobus of the right eye. The MRI of the brain only showed sinonasal inflammatory signs of the right maxillary sinus. The CT scan revealed opacification of the right maxillary sinus, with retraction of the sinus walls. We confirmed the diagnosis of silent sinus syndrome. The patient underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery. One year after surgery, despite clinical and aesthetic improvement, slight enophthalmos remained, but there were no other complications. In our case, the diagnosis of facial asymmetry as ptosis led to an initial imaging investigation to exclude neurological causes. Silent sinus syndrome should be included in the differential diagnosis of facial asymmetry. Despite the clinical suspicion, the diagnosis can only be confirmed by imaging studies.

Abstract
Computed tomography (CT) is one of the most used techniques in medical diagnosis, and its use has become one of the main sources of exposure of the population to ionising radiation. This work concentrates on the paediatric patients, since children exhibit higher radiosensitivity than adults. Nowadays, patient doses are estimated through two standard CT dose index (CTDI) phantoms as a reference to calculate CTDI volume (CTDI vol) values. This study aims at improving the knowledge about the radiation exposure to children and to better assess the accuracy of the CTDI vol method. The effectiveness of the CTDI vol method for patient dose estimation was then investigated through a sensitive study, taking into account the doses obtained by three methods: CTDI vol measured, CTDI vol values simulated with Monte Carlo (MC) code MCNPX and the recent proposed method Size-Specific Dose Estimate (SSDE). In order to assess organ doses, MC simulations were executed with paediatric voxel phantoms.

Abstract
The perspective of adding digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) to standard mammography in screening raises concerns regarding the dose absorbed by the fibroglandular breast tissue. Thus, it is important to estimate accurately the mean glandular dose (MGD), although there are no standard protocols for dosimetry, concerning DBT. This study aims at introducing backscatter factors (BSF) to calculate the entrance surface air kerma (ESAK), directly on patients or phantoms, in order to be introduced in the formalism proposed by Dance et al. MCNPX simulations were performed, to mimic a DBT acquisition, for a wide range of X-ray spectra. A homogeneous breast phantom with 50 % of glandular tissue was considered and several thicknesses were evaluated. Dose measurements were performed, to validate and support the simulation results. The BSF may indicate a real MGD estimation in vivo for DBT examinations and contribute for the improvement of the current guidelines used in these applications.

Abstract
Interventional cardiology (IC) procedures can be complex, requiring the operators to work near the patient, during long exposure times. Owing to scattered radiation in the patient and the fluoroscopic equipment, the medical staff are exposed to a non-uniform radiation field and can receive high radiation doses. In this study, it is proposed to analyse staff doses obtained in real time, during IC procedures. A system for occupational dosimetry in real time was used. In order to identify some parameters that may affect the staff doses, Monte Carlo (MC) calculations, using MCNPX v.2.7.0 code and voxel phantoms, were performed. The data obtained from measurements, together with MC simulations, allowed the identification of actions and behaviours of the medical staff that could be considered a risk under routine working conditions. The implementation of this monitoring system for exposure of personnel may have a positive effect on optimisation of radiological protection in fluoroscopically guided cardiac procedures.

Abstract
The search for cheap, easy-to-use and effective spermicides and microbicides to help avoid unwanted pregnancies and the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases has been ongoing for many years. This review takes into account compounds designed to act both as microbicides and spermicides for multipurpose prevention, and focuses on the required methodological studies to evaluate their safety, especially cytotoxicity. A comprehensive literature review was conducted on the synthesis, development, advantages and disadvantages of vaginal multi-function compounds. The available data shows that after several setbacks, there is a current interest in the synthesis and in the activity of novel dual-function substances. The study of well-known compounds with distinctive mechanisms of action provides a solid starting point to explore the possible development of such strategies. However, a completely safe and efficient compound for commercialization has yet to be identified.

Abstract
Seahorses are currently facing great challenges in the wild, including habitat degradation and overexploitation, and how they will endure additional stress from rapid climate change has yet to be determined. Unlike most fishes, the poor swimming skills of seahorses, along with the ecological and biological constraints of their unique lifestyle, place great weight on their physiological ability to cope with climate changes. In the present study, we evaluate the effects of ocean warming (+4°C) and acidification (ΔpH = -0.5 units) on the physiological and behavioural ecology of adult temperate seahorses, Hippocampus guttulatus. Adult seahorses were found to be relatively well prepared to face future changes in ocean temperature, but not the combined effect of warming and acidification. Seahorse metabolism increased normally with warming, and behavioural and feeding responses were not significantly affected. However, during hypercapnia the seahorses exhibited signs of lethargy (i.e. reduced activity levels) combined with a reduction of feeding and ventilation rates. Nonetheless, metabolic rates were not significantly affected. Future ocean changes, particularly ocean acidification, may further threaten seahorse conservation, turning these charismatic fishes into important flagship species for global climate change issues.

Abstract
Cleaning symbioses play an important role in the health of certain coastal marine communities. These interspecific associations often occur at specific sites (cleaning stations) where a cleaner organism (commonly a fish or shrimp) removes ectoparasites/damaged tissue from a 'client' (a larger cooperating fish). At present, the potential impact of climate change on the fitness of cleaner organisms remains unknown. This study investigated the physiological and biochemical responses of tropical (Lysmata amboinensis) and temperate (L. seticaudata) cleaner shrimp to global warming. Specifically, thermal limits (CTMax), metabolic rates, thermal sensitivity, heat shock response (HSR), lipid peroxidation [malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration], lactate levels, antioxidant (GST, SOD and catalase) and digestive enzyme activities (trypsin and alkaline phosphatase) at current and warming (+3 °C) temperature conditions. In contrast to the temperate species, CTMax values decreased significantly from current (24-27 °C) to warming temperature conditions (30 °C) for the tropical shrimp, where metabolic thermal sensitivity was affected and the HSR was significantly reduced. MDA levels in tropical shrimp increased dramatically, indicating extreme cellular lipid peroxidation, which was not observed in the temperate shrimp. Lactate levels, GST and SOD activities were significantly enhanced within the muscle tissue of the tropical species. Digestive enzyme activities in the hepatopancreas of both species were significantly decreased by warmer temperatures. Our data suggest that the tropical cleaner shrimp will be more vulnerable to global warming than the temperate Lysmata seticaudata; the latter evolved in a relatively unstable environment with seasonal thermal variations that may have conferred greater adaptive plasticity. Thus, tropical cleaning symbioses may be challenged at a greater degree by warming-related anthropogenic forcing, with potential cascading effects on the health and structuring of tropical coastal communities (e.g. coral reefs).

Abstract
Objetivo: o presente relato de caso pretende demonstrar a diversidade de apresentações clínicas, a evolução dos sintomas e o papel do médico da atenção primária no diagnóstico e seguimento de pacientes com esclerose múltipla e seus familiares. Descrição dos casos: duas mulheres, de 31 e 28 anos, caucasianas, inseridas em famílias nucleares (fases IV e II do ciclo de Duvall, respectivamente) pertencentes à classe média de Graffar. A primeira inicia um quadro insidioso de parestesias das mãos com melhoria em 2 meses. Passado um ano, apresenta-se com dificuldade em elevar as pálpebras e desequilíbrio marcado. A segunda apresenta diminuição súbita da acuidade visual à direita, tendo sido diagnosticada uma neurite óptica. Ambas foram diagnosticadas com esclerose múltipla. Conclusão: a esclerose múltipla é uma doença inflamatória crônica, desmielinizante e degenerativa do sistema nervoso central, que se revela de forma heterogênea. Torna-se importante ao médico de família saber como lidar com as incertezas diagnósticas.

Abstract
Sharks are one of the most threatened groups of marine animals worldwide, mostly owing to overfishing and habitat degradation/loss. Although these cartilaginous fish have evolved to fill many ecological niches across a wide range of habitats, they have limited capability to rapidly adapt to human-induced changes in their environments. Contrary to global warming, ocean acidification was not considered as a direct climate-related threat to sharks. Here we show, for the first time, that an early ontogenetic acclimation process of a tropical shark (Chiloscyllium punctatum) to the projected scenarios of ocean acidification (ΔpH = 0.5) and warming (+4°C; 30°C) for 2100 elicited significant impairments on juvenile shark condition and survival. The mortality of shark embryos at the present-day thermal scenarios was 0% both at normocapnic and hypercapnic conditions. Yet routine metabolic rates (RMRs) were significantly affected by temperature, pH and embryonic stage. Immediately after hatching, the Fulton condition of juvenile bamboo sharks was significantly different in individuals that experienced future warming and hypercapnia; 30 days after hatching, survival rapidly declined in individuals experiencing both ocean warming and acidification (up to 44%). The RMR of juvenile sharks was also significantly affected by temperature and pH. The impact of low pH on ventilation rates was significant only under the higher thermal scenario. This study highlights the need of experimental-based risk assessments of sharks to climate change. In other words, it is critical to directly assess risk and vulnerability of sharks to ocean acidification and warming, and such effort can ultimately help managers and policy-makers to take proactive measures targeting most endangered species.

Abstract
Little is known about the capacity of early life stages to undergo hypercapnic and thermal acclimation under the future scenarios of ocean acidification and warming. Here, we investigated a comprehensive set of biological responses to these climate change-related variables (2°C above winter and summer average spawning temperatures and ΔpH=0.5 units) during the early ontogeny of the squid Loligo vulgaris. Embryo survival rates ranged from 92% to 96% under present-day temperature (13–17°C) and pH (8.0) scenarios. Yet, ocean acidification (pH 7.5) and summer warming (19°C) led to a significant drop in the survival rates of summer embryos (47%, P<0.05). The embryonic period was shortened by increasing temperature in both pH treatments (P<0.05). Embryo growth rates increased significantly with temperature under present-day scenarios, but there was a significant trend reversal under future summer warming conditions (P<0.05). Besides pronounced premature hatching, a higher percentage of abnormalities was found in summer embryos exposed to future warming and lower pH (P<0.05). Under the hypercapnic scenario, oxygen consumption rates decreased significantly in late embryos and newly hatched paralarvae, especially in the summer period (P<0.05). Concomitantly, there was a significant enhancement of the heat shock response (HSP70/HSC70) with warming in both pH treatments and developmental stages. Upper thermal tolerance limits were positively influenced by acclimation temperature, and such thresholds were significantly higher in late embryos than in hatchlings under present-day conditions (P<0.05). In contrast, the upper thermal tolerance limits under hypercapnia were higher in hatchlings than in embryos. Thus, we show that the stressful abiotic conditions inside the embryo's capsules will be exacerbated under near-future ocean acidification and summer warming scenarios. The occurrence of prolonged embryogenesis along with lowered thermal tolerance limits under such conditions is expected to negatively affect the survival success of squid early life stages during the summer spawning period, but not winter spawning.

Abstract
Marine phycotoxins derived from harmful algal blooms are known to be associated with mass mortalities in the higher trophic levels of marine food webs. Bivalve mollusks and planktivorous fish are the most studied vectors of marine phycotoxins. However, field surveys recently showed that cephalopod mollusks also constitute potential vectors of toxins. Thus, here we determine, for the first time, the time course of accumulation and depuration of paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) in the common octopus (Octopus vulgaris). Concomitantly, the underlying kinetics of toxin transfer between tissue compartments was also calculated. Naturally contaminated clams were used to orally expose the octopus to PSTs during 6 days. Afterwards, octopus specimens were fed with non-contaminated shellfish during 10 days of depuration period. Toxins reached the highest concentrations in the digestive gland surpassing the levels in the kidney by three orders of magnitude. PSTs were not detected in any other tissue analyzed. Net accumulation efficiencies of 42% for GTX5, 36% for dcSTX and 23% for C1+2 were calculated for the digestive gland. These compounds were the most abundant toxins in both digestive gland and the contaminated shellfish diet. The small differences in relative abundance of each toxin observed between the prey and the cephalopod predator indicates low conversion rates of these toxins. The depuration period was better described using an exponential decay model comprising a single compartment - the entire viscera. It is worth noting that since octopuses' excretion and depuration rates are low, the digestive gland is able to accumulate very high toxin concentrations for long periods of time. Therefore, the present study clearly shows that O. vulgaris is a high-potential vector of PSTs during and even after the occurrence of these toxic algal blooms.

Abstract
The ability to understand and predict the effects of ocean warming (under realistic scenarios) on marine biota is of paramount importance, especially at the most vulnerable early life stages. Here we investigated the impact of predicted environmental warming (+3 °C) on the development, metabolism, heat shock response and antioxidant defense mechanisms of the early stages of the common octopus, Octopus vulgaris. As expected, warming shortened embryonic developmental time by 13 days, from 38 days at 18 °C to 25 days at 21 °C. Concomitantly, survival decreased significantly (~29.9 %). Size at hatching varied inversely with temperature, and the percentage of smaller premature paralarvae increased drastically, from 0 % at 18 °C to 17.8 % at 21 °C. The metabolic costs of the transition from an encapsulated embryo to a free planktonic form increased significantly with warming, and HSP70 concentrations and glutathione S-transferase activity levels were significantly magnified from late embryonic to paralarval stages. Yet, despite the presence of effective antioxidant defense mechanisms, ocean warming led to an augmentation of malondialdehyde levels (an indicative of enhanced ROS action), a process considered to be one of the most frequent cellular injury mechanisms. Thus, the present study provides clues about how the magnitude and rate of ocean warming will challenge the buffering capacities of octopus embryos and hatchlings' physiology. The prediction and understanding of the biochemical and physiological responses to warmer temperatures (under realistic scenarios) is crucial for the management of highly commercial and ecologically important species, such as O. vulgaris.

Abstract
The combined effects of future ocean acidification and global warming on the hypoxia thresholds of marine biota are, to date, poorly known. Here, we show that the future warming and acidification scenario led to shorter embryonic periods, lower survival rates and the enhancement of premature hatching in the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis. Routine metabolic rates increased during the embryonic period, but environmental hypercapnia significantly depressed pre-hatchling's energy expenditures rates (independently of temperature). During embryogenesis, there was also a significant rise in the carbon dioxide partial pressure in the perivitelline fluid (PVF), bicarbonate levels, as well as a drop in pH and oxygen partial pressure (pO₂). The critical partial pressure (i.e. hypoxic threshold) of the pre-hatchlings was significantly higher than the PVF oxygen partial pressure at the warmer and hypercapnic condition. Thus, the record of oxygen tensions below critical pO₂ in such climate scenario indicates that the already harsh conditions inside the egg capsules are expected to be magnified in the years to come, especially in populations at the border of their thermal envelope. Such a scenario promotes untimely hatching and smaller post-hatching body sizes, thus challenging the survival and fitness of early life stages.

Abstract
The MSH2 c.388_389del mutation has occasionally been described in Lynch families worldwide. At the Portuguese Oncology Institute in Porto, Portugal, we have identified 16 seemingly unrelated families with this germline mutation. To evaluate if this alteration is a founder or a recurrent mutation we performed haplotype analysis in the 16 Portuguese index cases and 55 relatives, as well as in four index cases and 13 relatives reported from Germany, Scotland, England, and Argentina. In the Portuguese families we observed a shared haplotype of approximately 10 Mb and all were originated from the north of Portugal. These results suggest that this alteration is a founder mutation in Portugal with a relatively recent origin. In the reported families outside Portugal with this mutation different haplotype backgrounds were observed, supporting the hypothesis that it occurred de novo on multiple occasions. We also conclude that the high proportion of families with the MSH2 c.388_389del mutation indicates that screening for this alteration as a first step may be cost-effective in the genetic testing of Lynch syndrome suspects of Portuguese ancestry, especially those originating from the north of Portugal.

Abstract
Avaliaram-se as fertilidades e coeficientes de variação (CV) de carneiros Saloios após inseminação artificial (IA) por via cervical com sémen refrigerado (SR) ou congelado (SC). Na 1ª experiência avaliou-se o efeito de duas épocas de IA (primavera vs. outono) sobre a fertilidade, utilizando SR (n=5 carneiros) e de duas épocas de congelação de sémen (outono vs. inverno) sobre a fertilidade de ovelhas inseminadas na primavera utilizando SC (n=3 carneiros). Nas outras experiências avaliaram-se as variações da fertilidade de carneiros, independentemente das épocas de IA ou congelação, utilizando SR e SC (2ª experiência: 4 carneiros comuns; 3ª experiência: 16 e 5 carneiros, respectivamente). Não foram observadas diferenças na fertilidade entre épocas de IA ou congelação de sémen. As fertilidades obtidas com SR foram superiores às do SC (2ª experiência: 51,28 vs. 13,65 %; 3ª experiência: 48,51 vs. 13,04 %). Os CV da fertilidade utilizando SC foram superiores aos do SR (2ª experiência: 41,3 % vs. 13,1 %; 3ª experiência: 38,9 vs. 19,5 %). Os carneiros de raça Saloia podem ser utilizados em programas de IA com SR e SC nas épocas do ano estudadas sem diminuição da fertilidade. O SC originou CV para a fertilidade superior sugerindo diferentes susceptibilidades dos carneiros à congelação.

Abstract
Brunner's gland hyperplasia is a very rare lesion of the duodenum, which is usually asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. It can cause gastrointestinal bleeding but hemorrhagic shock is a rare clinical presentation of Brunner's gland hyperplasia. The authors present a case of a patient with hemorrhagic shock due to a bleeding Brunner's gland hyperplasia, treated by urgent laparotomy and polypectomy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Petersen's space hernia is caused by the herniation of intestinal loops through the defect between the small bowel limbs, the transverse mesocolon and the retroperitoneum, after any type of gastrojejunostomy. The laparoscopic approach facilitates the occurrence of this type of hernia, due to the lack of post-operative adhesions which prevent bowel motility and hence, herniation. CASE REPORT We report the case of a 46 year-old male submitted to an open antrectomy and vagotomy with a Roux-en-Y reconstruction six-years before, for the treatment of bleeding gastric ulcer.He presented with epigastric abdominal pain radiating to the back and alimentary vomiting with a 3 days evolution, with an episode of hematemesis 2 h before admission. His abdomen was bloated and tender at the epigastric region. The laboratory exams revealed mild leucocytosis and CRP elevation with normal pancreatic tests. The abdominal CT scan revealed an intestinal occlusion. An exploratory laparotomy was performed, disclosing an incarcerated Petersen space hernia of the common limb, with obstruction and dilatation of the biliary limb. CONCLUSION The knowledge of this anatomic post-operative defect and a low threshold for diagnosis are crucial to its management, since its nonspecific clinical and laboratory findings. Early operative intervention is warranted in order to avoid the severe complications of bowel necrosis.

Abstract
A variational approach is used to develop a robust numerical procedure for solving the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equation. Following Maggs and Rossetto [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 196402 (2002)], we construct an appropriate constrained free energy functional such that its Euler-Lagrange equations are equivalent to the Poisson-Boltzmann equation. This is a formulation that searches for a true minimum in function space, in contrast to previous variational approaches that rather searched for a saddle point. We then develop, implement, and test an algorithm for its numerical minimization, which is quite simple and unconditionally stable. The analytic solution for planar geometry is used for validation. Some results are presented for a charged colloidal sphere surrounded by counterions and optimizations based upon fast Fourier transforms and hierarchical preconditioning are briefly discussed.

Abstract
Infiltration systems are frequently used as an option to manage urban storm drainage. By reducing flows and volumes in downstream sewers or in surface waters, they decrease the overflows and make it possible to recharge groundwater. They come in various forms with different uses; therefore, their performance is diverse and integrates multiple aspects. Consequently, a multicriteria approach was developed in order to quantify the performance of these systems and to help in decision making problems. For that purpose, a list of performance indicators integrating technical, economical, environmental and social aspects was developed. The performances were defined with the help of a working group composed of engineers from different technical or strategic departments from Greater Lyon and researchers from different fields. The paper presents the last version of the performance indicators tested according to a set of quality requirements: availability of data, relevance, fidelity, precision, sensitivity/robustness. This critical review of the set of indicators has led us to redefine a certain number of indicators, identify numerous biases and allow putting forward general instructions for criterion or indicator construction. The last phase is to propose multicriteria decision aid methods; a procedure using ELECTRE methods should be used.

Abstract
Germline MLH1 and MSH2 mutations are scarce in young colorectal cancer patients with negative family history of the disease. To evaluate the contribution of germline MSH6 mutations to early-onset colorectal cancer, we have analysed peripheral blood of 38 patients diagnosed with this disease before 45 years of age and who presented no family history of hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer-related cancers. Blood samples from 108 healthy volunteers were analysed for those genetic alterations suspected to affect the function of MSH6. Of the seven (18.4%) MSH6 alterations found, we have identified three novel germline mutations, one 8 bp deletion leading to a truncated protein and two missense mutations resulting in the substitution of amino acids belonging to different polarity groups. High-frequency microsatellite instability was found in the patient with the MSH6 deletion, but not in the other 27 carcinomas analysed. No MLH1 promoter methylation was detected in tumour tissue. Our findings suggest that germline MSH6 mutations contribute to a subset of early-onset colorectal cancer. Further studies are warranted to understand the genetic and environmental factors responsible for the variable penetration of MSH6 germline mutations, as well as to identify other causes of early-onset colorectal cancer.
