Abstract
Sophora flavescens Aiton, a traditional Chinese medicine that was supposed to predominantly play an anti-inflammatory role, has been used to treat multiple diseases, including cancer, for over two thousand years. Recently, it has attracted increasing attention due to the anti-tumor properties of Oxymatrine, one of the most active alkaloids extracted from S. flavescens. This study aims to explore anti-tumor effects in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and the underlying mechanisms. We first investigated the effects of oxymatrine on cell apoptosis in lung cancer cell lines A549 and PC9 as well as explored related genes in regulating the apoptosis by transcriptome analysis. Subsequently, to further study the role of TRIM46, we constructed two types of TRIM46 over-expression cells (A549TRIM46+ and PC9TRIM46+ cells) and then investigated the effect of TRIM46 on oxymatrine-induced apoptosis. Moreover, we explored the effect of TRIM46 on downstream signaling pathways. Transcriptome analysis suggested that shared differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in A549 and PC9 cells treated with oxymatrine were CACNA1I, PADI2, and TRIM46. According to TCGA database analysis, the abundance of TRIM46 expression was higher than CACNA1I, and PADI2 in lung cancer tissues, then was selected as the final DEG for subsequent studies. We observed that oxymatrine resulted in down-expression of TRIM46 as well as induced the apoptosis of the cancer cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Meanwhile, we found that apoptosis induced by oxymatrine was inhibited by over-expressing TRIM46. Furthermore, our study indicated that the NF-κB signaling pathway was involved in apoptosis suppressed by TRIM46.We conclude that TRIM46 is the direct target of oxymatrine to induce anti-tumor apoptosis and may activate the downstream NF-κB signaling pathway.

Abstract
Solanum lyratum Thunb is a traditional Chinese medicinal with a significant clinical outcome for tumor treatment; however, chemicals or fractions separated from the herb did not exhibit strong and comparable efficacy. To investigate the potential synergy or antagonism among chemicals in the extract, we obtained the compounds solavetivone (SO), tigogenin (TI) and friedelin (FR) from the herb. The anti-tumor effects of these three monomer compounds alone or in combination with the anti-inflammatory compound DRG were also tested in this study. SO, FR and TI used alone did not inhibit the proliferation of A549 and HepG2 cells, but the combination of the three achieved 40% inhibition. In vitro anti-inflammatory analysis showed that DRG had a stronger anti-inflammatory effect than TS at the same concentration, and the combination of DRG with SO, FR or TI inhibited the anti-tumor effect of DRG. This is the first study that documented the synergistic and antagonistic interactions between different compounds in a single herb.

Abstract
As the incidence of neurodegeneration and cancer fatalities remains high, researchers are focusing their efforts on discovering and developing effective medications, especially plant-based drugs, against these diseases. Hence, this research aimed to investigate the neuropharmacological potentials of aerial parts of Tetrastigma leucostaphyllum, employing some behavioral models, while the antiproliferative effect was explored against a panel of cancer cell lines (MGC-803, A549, U-251, HeLa and MCF-7) using a colorimetric assay. In addition, active extracts were analyzed by GC-MS technique to identify the active compounds, where some selective compounds were docked with the particular pure proteins to check their binding affinity. Results from neuropharmacological research indicated that the total extract and its fractions may be effective (p = 0.05, 0.01, and 0.001, respectively) at doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg of animal body weight. The greatest antidepressant and anxiolytic effects were found in the n-hexane fraction. The n-haxane fraction also exhibited the highest cytotoxicity against the U-251 cell line (IC5014.3 μg/mL), followed by the A549, MG-803, HeLa, and MCF-7 cell lines, respectively. From the n-hexane fraction, ten chemicals were detected using the GC-MS method. Additionally, the in-silico research revealed interactions between the n-hexane fractions' identified compounds and the antidepressant, anxiolytic, and cytotoxic receptors. The molecules showed binding affinities that ranged from 4.6 kcal/mol to 6.8 kcal/mol, which indicates the likelihood that they would make good drug candidates. This study highlighted the plant's neuropharmacological and cytotoxic properties, however, more research is needed to determine the etymological origin of these effects.

Abstract
Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni is grown worldwide as an important, natural sweetener resource plant. The yield of steviol glycosides (SVglys) is greatly influenced by continuous cropping. In this study, we collected the roots, rhizosphere soils, and bulk soils from 2 years of continuous cropping (Y2) and 8 years of continuous cropping (Y8). A high-throughput sequencing technology based on Illumina Hiseq 2500 platform was used to study the structure and diversity of bacterial communities in the roots and soils of stevia with different years of continuous cropping. The results demonstrated that although the content of a group of SVglys was significantly increased in stevia of long-term continuous cropping, it inhibited the growth of plants and lowered the leaf dry weight; as a result, the total amount of SVglys was significantly decreased. Meanwhile, continuous cropping changed the physicochemical properties and the bacterial composition communities of soil. The different sampling sources of the root, rhizosphere soil, and bulk soil had no impact on the richness of bacterial communities, while it exhibited obvious effects on the diversity of bacterial communities. Continuous cropping had a stronger effect on the bacterial community composition in rhizosphere soil than in root and bulk soil. Based on linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe), in the rhizosphere soil of Y8, the relative abundance of some beneficial bacterial genera of Sphingomonas, Devosia, Streptomyces, and Flavobacterium decreased significantly, while the relative abundance of Polycyclovorans, Haliangium, and Nitrospira greatly increased. Moreover, the soil pH and nutrient content, especially the soil organic matter, were correlated with the relative abundance of predominant bacteria at the genus level. This study provides a theoretical basis for uncovering the mechanism of obstacles in continuous stevia cropping and provides guidance for the sustainable development of stevia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Severe COVID-19 infections have already taken more than 4 million lives worldwide. Factors, such as socio-demographics, comorbidities, lifestyles, environment, and so on, have been widely discussed to be associated with increased severity in many countries. The study aimed to determine the risk factors of severe-critical COVID-19 in Bangladesh. METHODS This was a comparative cross-sectional study among various types of COVID-19 patients (both hospitalized and non-hospitalized) confirmed by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). We have selected 1500 COVID-19 positive patients using a convenient sampling technique and analyzed lifestyle and comorbidity-related data using IBM SPSS-23 statistical package software. Chi-square test and multinomial logistic regression were used to determine risk factors of life-threatening COVID-19 infection. RESULTS The mean age of the study participants was 43.23 (±15.48) years. The study identified several lifestyle-related factors and common commodities as risk factors for severe-critical COVID-19. The patient's age was one of the most important predictors, as people >59 years were at higher risk (AOR=18.223). Among other lifestyle factors, active smoking (AOR=1.482), exposure to secondary smoking (AOR=1.728), sleep disturbance (AOR=2.208) and attachment with SLT/alcohol/substance abuse (AOR=1.804) were identified as significant predictors for severe-critical COVID-19. Patients those were overweight/obese (AOR=2.105), diabetic (AOR=4.286), hypertensive (AOR=3.363), CKD patients (AOR=8.317), asthma patients (AOR=2.152), CVD patients (AOR=7.747) were also at higher risk of severe-critical COVID-19 infection. CONCLUSION This study has identified several vital lifestyles and comorbidity-related risk factors of severe-critical COVID-19. People who have these comorbidities should be under high protection, and risky lifestyles of the general population should modify through the proper educational campaign.

Abstract
The roots of Glycyrrhiza spp. have been utilized in Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for thousands of years. Non-traditional (aerial) parts constitute a large portion of the biomass of Glycyrrhiza plants and are mostly discarded after harvesting the roots and rhizomes. Through comparative phytochemical and anti-inflammatory activity analyses, this study explored the potential benefits of the aerial parts of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch. ex DC. as medicinal materials. First, a combined approach based on GC/MS and UHPLC-ESI-QTof MS analysis was adopted for the identification and quantitative examination of medicinally important compounds from G. uralensis. Additionally, a bioassay-guided fractioning of ethanolic extracts of G. uralensis leaf material was performed and its anti-inflammatory activity was tested. The aerial portion of G. uralensis was rich in medicinally important compounds. Two compounds (henicosane-1 and decahydroisoquinoline-2) were found to exert a significant anti-inflammatory effect, inhibiting the release of pro-inflammatory mediators (NO and PGE2) and cytokines (IL-1β, IL6, and TNF-α), without exerting cytotoxic effects. Moreover, both compounds down-regulated iNOS and COX-2 mRNA expression. These results suggest that non-traditional parts of G. uralensis are suitable sources of bioactive metabolites that can be explored for medicinal purposes.

Abstract
Background: Elevated serum thyroglobulin (Tg) level is commonly observed in various forms of thyrotoxicosis; the levels vary according to different etiologies. This study aimed at identifying the value of serum Tg level in the differential diagnosis of common etiologies of thyrotoxicosis. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the endocrine outpatient department of a tertiary hospital in Bangladesh from March 2015 to May 2017. In this study, 200 subjects with newly detected untreated thyrotoxicosis were evaluated. Serum Tg was assayed by chemiluminescent immunometric assay. Results: Serum Tg level was raised in 48% of subjects. Subjects aged ≥40 years, and those having a family history of thyroid disorders had relatively higher thyroglobulin levels. The frequency of subjects with an elevated Tg was highest in subacute thyroiditis (89.5%) followed by toxic nodular goiter (77.3%) and Graves’ disease (32.9%); the difference in the frequencies was statistically significant (p<0.001). Median Tg was highest in the subjects with subacute thyroiditis (132.6 ng/ml) followed by toxic nodular goiter (99.55 ng/ml); those with Graves’ disease had the lowest Tg level (12.5 ng/ml); the differences in median Tg levels across the three groups were also statistically significant (p<0.001). Conclusions: Serum thyroglobulin level may be useful for the etiological diagnosis of thyrotoxicosis.

Abstract
Tetrastigma leucostaphylum (TL) is an important ethnic medicine of Bangladesh used to treat diarrhea and dysentery. Hence, current study has been designed to characterize the antidiarrheal (in vivo) and cytotoxic (in vitro) effects of T. leucostaphylum. A crude extract was prepared with methanol (MTL) and further partitioned into n-hexane (NTL), dichloromethane (DTL), and n-butanol (BTL) fractions. Antidiarrheal activity was investigated using castor oil induced diarrhea, enteropooling, and gastrointestinal transit models, while cytotoxicity was evaluated using the brine shrimp lethality bioassay. In antidiarrheal experiments, all doses (100, 200, and 400 mg/kg) of the DTL extract significantly reduced diarrheal stool frequency, volume and weight of intestinal contents, and gastrointestinal motility in mice. Similarly, in the cytotoxicity assay, all extracts exhibited activity, with the DTL extract the most potent (LC50 67.23 μg/mL). GC-MS analysis of the DTL extract identified 10 compounds, which showed good binding affinity toward M3 muscarinic acetylcholine, 5-HT3, Gut inhibitory phosphodiesterase, DNA polymerase III subunit alpha, and UDP-N-acetylglucosamine-1 carboxyvinyltransferase enzyme targets upon molecular docking analysis. Although ADME/T analyses predicted the drug-likeness and likely safety upon consumption of these bioactive compounds, significant toxicity concerns are evident due to the presence of the known phytotoxin, 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol. In summary, T. leucostaphylum showed promising activity, helping to rationalize the ethnomedicinal use and importance of this plant, its safety profile following both acute and chronic exposure warrants further investigation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Leaves of the medicinal plant Ampelopsis grossedentata, which is commonly known as vine tea, are used widely in the traditional Chinese beverage in southwest China. The leaves contain a large amount of dihydromyricetin, a compound with various biological activities. However, the transcript profiles involved in its biosynthetic pathway in this plant are unknown. RESULTS We conducted a transcriptome analysis of both young and old leaves of the vine tea plant using Illumina sequencing. Of the transcriptome datasets, a total of 52.47 million and 47.25 million clean reads were obtained from young and old leaves, respectively. Among 471,658 transcripts and 177,422 genes generated, 7768 differentially expressed genes were identified in leaves at these two stages of development. The phenylpropanoid biosynthetic pathway of vine tea was investigated according to the transcriptome profiling analysis. Most of the genes encoding phenylpropanoid biosynthesis enzymes were identified and found to be differentially expressed in different tissues and leaf stages of vine tea and also greatly contributed to the biosynthesis of dihydromyricetin in vine tea. CONCLUSIONS To the best of our knowledge, this is the first formal study to explore the transcriptome of A. grossedentata. The study provides an insight into the expression patterns and differential distribution of genes related to dihydromyricetin biosynthesis in vine tea. The information may pave the way to metabolically engineering plants with higher flavonoid content.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Given the considerable social marginalization experienced by people who inject drugs (PWID), treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in this population presents unique challenges. This study assessed the feasibility of treating HCV infection with direct-acting antiviral (DAA) medications among PWID receiving harm reduction services from a Drop-in-Center in Dhaka, Bangladesh. METHODS In this prospective study conducted between December 2016 and May 2018, 200 PWID with either recent injecting drug use (i.e., within the previous two months) or a history of injecting drug use and are currently receiving opioid substitution therapy were recruited. Blood was collected to conduct relevant laboratory tests. Eligible PWID who tested positive for HCV RNA (n = 55), were provided daily daclatasvir (60 mg) and sofosbuvir (400 mg) for 12 weeks after which adherence level, sustained virologic response (SVR), and reinfection were assessed. RESULTS At baseline, 40% (n = 79) of the 200 participants recruited to the study tested positive for antibodies to HCV and 34% (n = 68) had detectable HCV RNA in their blood. Of 55 eligible PWID who initiated treatment, 93% (n = 51) completed treatment while 87% (n = 48) were available for follow-up SVR assessment, all of whom achieved SVR. Thus, intent-to-treat SVR was 87% and the modified intent-to-treat SVR was 100% with one reinfection (4•2 cases per 100 person-years). Further, 75% (i.e., 41 out of the 55 participants) were at least 90% adherent to therapy. CONCLUSION Our findings strongly suggest that HCV treatment using sofosbuvir+daclatasvir for PWID enrolled in existing harm reduction programs in Bangladesh is feasible but may require additional interventions such as Opioid Substitution Therapy, intense follow up by outreach workers, and services and counselling provided by full time clinicians.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Holigarna caustica (Dennst.) is commonly used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of painful conditions such as eye irritation, inflammation, arthritis, skin diseases, cuts and wounds. AIM OF THE STUDY The present study was undertaken to investigate the anti-nociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities of the methanol extract of H. caustica leaves and to elucidate its possible mechanism(s) of action. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fresh leaves of H. caustica were collected, dried, and extracted with methanol (MEHC). MEHC was subjected to activity testing, using chemical-induced (acetic acid and formalin test) and heat-induced (hot plate and tail immersion test) pain models. To determine the possible mechanism behind the anti-nociceptive activity of MEHC, the opioid antagonist naltrexone was used to evaluate the involvement of opioid receptors in the case of formalin, hot plate and tail immersion tests, while the involvement of the cGMP and ATP-sensitive K+ channel pathways were assessed using methylene blue and glibenclamide respectively, in the acetic acid-induced writhing test. In parallel, the carrageenan-induced paw oedema model was used to determine the anti-inflammatory potential of the extract. Exploratory and motor behaviours were evaluated by the open-field test. Various bioactive compounds potentially responsible for the anti-nociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities were ascertained using GC-MS analysis. RESULTS MEHC showed strong, significant and dose-dependent anti-nociceptive activity in all chemical-induced and heat-induced pain models at all experimental doses. The association of opioid receptors with the observed anti-nociceptive effects was confirmed by using naltrexone. The cGMP and ATP-sensitive K+ channel pathway was also shown to be involved in the anti-nociceptive activity of MEHC. In addition, MEHC exhibited a dose-dependent inhibition of inflammatory oedema induced by carrageenan. MEHC was not connected with changes in either the locomotor activity or motor responses of mice. In a GC-MS analysis, 40 compounds were identified, among which twelve are documented bioactive compounds with potent analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. CONCLUSIONS Our current study revealed that MEHC possesses strong central and peripheral anti-nociceptive as well as anti-inflammatory activity. It may also be concluded that both opioid receptors as well as the cGMP and ATP-sensitive K+ channel pathway are involved in the anti-nociceptive mechanism of MEHC. This study rationalizes the ethnomedicinal use of H. caustica leaves in various painful conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present study documents the ethnomedicinal knowledge among the traditional healers of the Pangkhua indigenous community of Bangladesh. The documented data from this area was quantitatively analyzed for the first time. We aimed to record ethnomedicinal information from both the traditional healers and also the elderly men and women of the community, in order to compile and document all available information concerning plant use and preserve it for the coming generations. We aimed to compare how already known species are used compared to elsewhere and particularly to highlight new ethnomedicinal plant species alongside their therapeutic use(s). METHODS All ethnomedicinal information was collected following established techniques. Open-ended and semi-structured techniques were primarily utilized. Data was analyzed using different quantitative indices. The level of homogeneity between information provided by different informants was calculated using the Informant Consensus Factor. All recorded plant species are presented in tabular format, alongside corresponding ethnomedicinal usage information. RESULTS This investigation revealed the traditional use of 117 plant species, distributed among 104 genera and belonging to 54 families. There was strong agreement among the informants regarding ethnomedicinal uses of plants, with Factor of Informant Consensus (FIC) values ranging from 0.50 to 0.66, with the highest number of species (49) being used for the treatment of digestive system disorders (FIC 0.66). In contrast, the least agreement (FIC = 0.50) between informants regarding therapeutic uses was observed for plants used to treat urinary disorders. The present study was compared with 43 prior ethnomedicinal studies, conducted both nationally and in neighboring countries, and the results revealed that the Jaccard index (JI) ranged from 1.65 to 33.00. The highest degree of similarity (33.00) was found with another study conducted in Bangladesh, while the lowest degree of similarity (1.65) was found with a study conducted in Pakistan. This study recorded 12 new ethnomedicinal plant species, of which 6 have never been studied pharmacologically to date. CONCLUSIONS This study showed that the Pangkhua community still depends substantially on ethnomedicinal plants for the treatment of various ailments and diseases and that several of these plants are used in novel ways or represented their first instances of use for medicinal applications.

Abstract
This cross sectional descriptive study was performed on 70 postmortem vermiform appendices (male 34 and female 36) to find out the various positions of vermiform appendix of Bangladeshi people. The specimens were collected from autopsy laboratory of the Department of Forensic Medicine, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh by purposive sampling technique from October 2016 to March 2017. The collected samples were divided into four age groups. They were Group A (upto 20 years), Group B (21 to 40 years), Group C (41 to 60 years) and Group D (above 60 years). Dissection was performed according to standard autopsy technique. During postmortem examination abdominal cavity was routinely exposed by classical midline incision from xiphoid process to the symphysis pubis and a semicircular incision around the umbilicus and the flaps were reflected to give a good view of the abdominal cavity along with its contents and then the taeniae coli of the caecum were identified. The three taeniae coli of the caecum converge at the base of the appendix and become its longitudinal muscle coat. The anterior caecal taeniae coli acts as the best guide for identification of the vermiform appendix. The relation of the base of the appendix to the caecum is constant but the position of the vermiform appendix, which is variable, was studied in relation to caecum and the terminal part of the ileum. Accordingly the position of the vermiform appendix was noted either retrocaecal, pelvic, preileal or postileal, subcaecal. All data were recorded in the predesigned data sheet, analyzed by SPSS program (version 21, 2012) and compared with the findings of other national and international studies and standard text books. Among 70 specimens, 44(62.9%) vermiform appendices were retrocaecal in position. The next common position was pelvic which was in 22(31.4%) specimen followed by postileal in 3(4.3%) specimen and subcaecal was observed only in 1(1.4%) specimen. In this study in all age groups incidence of retrocaecal vermiform appendix was highest and it was about 67.6%, 50%, 69.2% and 72.7% in Group A, B, C, D respectively. Pelvic position was 7.1%, 46.9%, 23.1% and 27.3% in Group A, B, C, D respectively. Subcaecal vermiform appendix was absent in Group A, B and Group D. On the other hand postileal vermiform appendix was absent in Group C and Group D. The findings of this study may help the physician and the surgeons for proper diagnosis, management and treatment of disease of vermiform appendix.

Abstract
Objectives Traditionally, mushrooms have been used to reduce hyperglycaemia. However, the mechanism underlying this effect has not yet been explored. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is known to reduce hyperglycaemia through an insulin-independent pathway. This study aimed to observe the effect of oyster mushroom powder (OMP) on phosphorylation of AMPK (p-AMPK) and expression of GLUT4 mRNA in diabetic model rats. Methods Long-Evans rats were used to develop type 2 diabetic model rats through intraperitoneal induction of streptozotocin (STZ). OMP was supplemented at 5% with the usual feed of rats for 8 consecutive weeks. Then, the rats were sacrificed. RNA was extracted by the TRIzol reagent, and proteins were extracted from different tissues with RIPA lysis buffer. Expression of GLUT4 mRNA was measured through cDNA-PCR techniques, and p-AMPK was detected using western blotting. The band intensities of the PCR products and proteins were measured using Image J software. Results Supplementation of OMP for 8 weeks resulted in a reduction of the serum glucose level in STZ-induced, type 2 diabetic model rats. The levels of p-AMPK, as a ratio relative to β-actin, increased in the muscle and adipose tissues of mushroom-treated type 2 diabetic model rats, compared to those in control diabetic model rats. Expression of GLUT4, as a ratio relative to GAPDH, increased significantly in both the muscle and adipose tissues of mushroom-treated diabetic rats. Conclusion Oyster mushroom may decrease hyperglycaemia through increased p-AMPK and also expression of GLUT4 in the muscle and adipose tissues.

Abstract
Since its introduction in early 1990s, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) has become integral to the diagnosis and staging of various luminal, extraluminal gastrointestinal (GI) and certain non-GI lesions. There is no data on EUS experience in Bangladesh. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the initial recent experience and clinical impact of EUS. All EUS procedures data were recorded prospectively from July 2013 to December 2014. These included patients' demographics, referral details, provisional diagnosis, management plan before and after EUS & indications of procedures. EUS-FNA data recorded included details regarding site, number of passes and histological diagnosis. Two hundred & four EUS procedures were carried out over one and half years. Male female ratio was 1.4:1, mean age was 46.4 ± 20 years. Of these procedures 148 (72.5%) were referrals from physicians and 56 (27.5%) were from surgeons. Most common indications were pancreatobiliary pathologies, esophageal & gastric pathologies. Pancreatobiliary lesions (n = 165, 80.9%) included patients with (A) Benign pathologies: Microliths in Gall baldder (n = 6), Gall stones (n = 12), Biliary ascarrisis (n = 22), Choledocholithiasis (n = 42), Acute Pancreatitis (n = 9), Chronic Pancreatitis (n = 15), Pancreatic pseudocysts(n = 4) (B) Malignant Pathologies : GB Carcinoma (n = 4), Cholangiocarcinoma (n = 29), Ca- pancreas (n = 9), Periampullary carcinoma (n = 12). Esophageal lesion was 9.3% (n = 19) of total procedures. Forty seven percent (n = 9) of EUS procedures on esophagus were for staging of esophageal malignancy, 10. 5% (n = 2) for restaging or recurrence after chemoradiation and 21% (n = 4) for submucosal lesions. Fifteen EUS procedures were carried out for gastric lesions, seven were for staging of gastric carcinoma, four were for assessment of submucosal lesions (e.g. GIST, lipoma or external compression), 02 for assessment of polyps and two for gastric ulcers.In clinical impact & outcome study, changes in diagnosis, management, avoidance of investigations and usefulness of EUS were evaluated. Diagnosis was changed in 34.4% (64/186) & management was changed in 45%(92/204). Additional investigation was avoided in 57.8% (118/204). This is the first report of Bangladesh experience of EUS to date. EUS is safe, accurate, cost effective & very useful tool for diagnosis and management of G.I. disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a hepatic manifestation of insulin resistance and serum uric acid (SUA) levels seemed to be elevated during this disorder. There is a paucity of data regarding the association of SUA with NAFLD in prediabetes. In this context, the present study has been undertaken to investigate this association. METHODS In a cross-sectional analytical design, a total of 110 prediabetic subjects [M/F; 63/47, age in ranges, 45 (25-68)] were recruited in the study and divided into non NAFLD (n = 62) and NAFLD (n = 48) group after examined with ultrasonogram. Insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was calculated by homeostasis model assessment. RESULTS NAFLD subjects had significantly higher levels of SUA compared to non NAFLD subjects (6.10 ± 1.42 vs. 5.38 ± 1.14, p = 0.004). They also had significantly higher levels of HOMA-IR (2.4 ± 1.09 vs. 1.4 ± 0.45, p < 0.001). In binary logistic regression analysis, HbA1c (OR = 3.505, p = 0.002), SUA (OR = 1.514, p = 0.023) and HOMA-IR (OR = 1.478, p = 0.029) were found to be significant determinants of NAFLD after adjusting the effects of BMI and triglyceride (TG). In multiple linear regression analysis, SUA showed significant positive association with HOMA-IR (ß = 0.355, p = 0.027) and TG (ß = 0.325, p = 0.033) after adjusting the effects of BMI and HbA1c. CONCLUSIONS Increased levels of serum uric acid are significantly associated with NAFLD and this association seemed to be mediated by insulin resistance among prediabetic subjects.

Abstract
A study was conducted in the Laboratory of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science, University of Rajshahi, Rajshahi, Bangladesh, during March, 2011 to February, 2012. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of temperature, humidity and rainfall in different months on the prevalence of haemonchosis of goats in Rajshahi, Bangladesh. A total of 720 samples were examined, of these (416) 57.8% goats were found positive for Haemonchus spp. infection. The highest prevalence was observed in the month of July (82.1 %) followed by August (79.7 %) and lowest in the January (28.3 %) followed by February (38.7 %). It was also observed that temperature (29.8°?), relative humidity (86%) and rainfall (146.0 mm) in the month of July was favourable for the egg laying, hatching and survival of infective larvae on the pasture. On the other hand, all the factors like temperature, humidity and rainfall was recorded lowest as 17.5°?, 79%, 5.5 mm respectively which was unfavourable for the reproduction and survival of infective larvae in the month of the January. The current study revealed that haemonchosis is an important and common parasitic disease and requires special attention for its control. The prevalence among different months when compared statistically (Chi-square test and DMRT) revealed significant (P=0.001) differences. So, it is concluded that, month of the year, temperature, humidity and rainfall has significance effect on the prevalence of haemonchosis in goats. Abstract
Background: Diabetes mellitus coexists at a greater frequency with hypertension, obesity, central obesity, and dyslipidemia. Obesity has been identified as the most important modifiable risk factor in the aetiology of type-2 diabetes mellitus. Central obesity has been shown to be the most pathogenically important in the causation of metabolic disorders including type-2 diabetes. Aims: To determine the association of central obesity with type 2 diabetes in Bangladeshi women. Subjects and Methods: A total of 60 type 2 diabetic female subjects along with 60 healthy female subjects were recruited in this study. Anthropometric indices were measured using standard techniques. Serum glucose was measured using glucose-oxidase method, insulin was measured using ELISA and thyroid hormones were measured using chemiluminescence based automated Immulite Auto analyzer (DPC, USA). Insulin secretory capacity and insulin sensitivity were estimated using fasting glucose and fasting insulin by HOMA-CIGMA software. Results: Waist circumference of the control (89±8) subjects was significantly (p=0.046) lower than the diabetic (94±11) subjects. Waist-hip ratio of the control subjects was significantly lower compared to diabetic subjects. Fasting plasma insulin level in control subjects (7.6±2.2) was significantly (p=0.009) lower compared to diabetic subjects (11.8±9.8). Plasma lipid profile and thyroid hormone status in control and diabetic subjects were not found significantly different. Insulin secretory capacity (HOMA %B) and insulin sensitivity (HOMA%S) in control subjects (93±21, 95±39 respectively) were found to be significantly higher com-pared to diabetic subjects (45±32, 67±42 respectively). In age-adjusted binary logistic regression analysis, waist circumference was found to be significantly associated with diabetes. In multiple linear regression analysis TSH was found to be significantly associated with waist circumference. Conclusion: Waist circumference may be an independent indicator for the development type 2 diabetes in Bangladeshi women which may have influenced by thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). Abstract
The genetic differentiation and phylogenetic relationships of 18 indigenous goat populations from seven East Asian countries were analysed based on data obtained from 26 microsatellite DNA markers. The mean number of alleles (MNA) per population ranged from 2.5 to 7.6, with an average of 5.8. Genetic variability estimated from MNA and heterozygosity (H(E) and H(O) ) were relatively low in coastal and island populations. A heterozygous deficiency within populations (F(IS) = 0.054, P < 0.001) and total inbreeding (F(IT) = 0.181, P < 0.01) were observed, and genetic differentiation in the populations (F(ST) ) was 13.4%. The results of Bayesian model-based clustering and a neighbour-joining tree based on Nei's genetic distance showed that Asian goat populations could be subdivided into at least the following three genetic clusters: East Asian, Southeast Asian and Mongolian. These results are in close accordance with conventional morphological and geographical classifications and migration history.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the relationship between serum retinol and biochemical indices of iron nutritional status amongst adolescent girls in urban Bangladesh. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. SETTING Girls' high schools in Dhaka City, Bangladesh. SUBJECTS Adolescent girls, n = 225, aged between 12 and 15 years, from four urban schools participated in the study. Information on socio-economic conditions were obtained using a questionnaire. The height and weight of each girl were measured and a sample of blood was taken for biochemical analyses. RESULTS Twenty-two per cent of the participants were found to be anaemic (Hb < 120 g/l), 15% had subnormal serum iron ( < 7.16 mumol/l) and about 25% were iron deficient judged by serum transferrin saturation (TS < 15%). Eleven per cent of the participants had low levels of serum retinol ( < 1.05 mumol/l). Anaemic girls (n = 51) were found to have significantly lower serum retinol as well as lower packed cell volume (PCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), serum iron, TS, and higher serum total iron binding capacity (TIBC) compared with those with normal haemoglobin levels. When the girls were classified by serum retinol, the third with the highest serum retinol had significantly higher levels of haemoglobin, PCV, MCHC and serum iron levels. When age, family size, family income, expenditure on food, education of the parents, supplementation with vitamin A or iron and menstruation at the time of study were accounted for by multiple regression analysis, a strong relationship was found for serum retinol concentration with PCV, MCHC, haemoglobin, serum iron and TS. For 1 mumol/l change in serum retinol concentration there was a 10.1 g/l change in haemoglobin whilst taking other factors into account. CONCLUSION The data indicate that there is an interaction between serum retinol and biochemical indices of iron nutriture in adolescent girls who do not display any clinical signs of overt deficiency.

Abstract
The musk shrew (Suncus Murinus) is widely distributed throughout Asia and East Africa. The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) of this species was analyzed in individuals from 31 local populations in nine Asian countries and Mauritius, using 17 restriction endonucleases. Although fourteen and nine mtDNA haplotypes were detected from Bangladesh and Nepal, respectively, one to four haplotypes were found in each Southeast Asian country, and one common haplotype existed in Japan, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. Clustering analysis of mtDNA haplotypes classified shrew populations to three groups--continental group (Bangladesh and Nepal), islands' group (insular countries and Vietnam) and Malay group. The average nucleotide diversity among these three groups was calculated to be about 3.5%. These results indicate that the origin of feral populations in this species might be old and their population sizes are extremely large in the continent, and suggest a rapid spread of this animal throughout the islands. Although we have not shown yet an evidence of close relationships between islands' and continental mtDNA haplotypes, it is likely that the musk shrew had migrated from the continent in South Asia to the islands in Southeast Asia recently.

Abstract
Cleavage patterns of mitochondrial DNAs (mtDNAs) by 15 restriction endonucleases were analyzed for 10 swamp and 13 river types of domestic water buffaloes. Digestions with nine enzymes exhibited polymorphisms giving two or three kinds of cleavage patterns. Five mtDNA types were identified, three types in the swamp buffaloes of the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia (S-types) and two types in the river buffaloes of Bangladesh and Pakistan (R-types). Nucleotide diversities ranged from 0.2 to 0.6% within the S- and R-types and from 1.9 to 2.4% between the R-types and the S-types. These values indicated that R-type and S-type mtDNAs differentiated at the subspecific level of other mammalian species reported. The possibility of polyphyletic domestication in different places is discussed for the origin of two distinct types of domestic water buffaloes.

Abstract
The present study was designed to investigate the relationship between smoking and antioxidant nutrient intake and status. Smoker (n 44) and non-smoker (n 44) male students attending Dhaka University, aged between 22 and 28 years and living in a University Hall of Residence, were selected for the present study. Mean age, body weight, BMI and blood pressure were similar for both the smokers and non-smokers. Mean energy, protein and fat intakes were similar for both groups. Smokers had lower intakes of dietary vitamin C, carotenes and Zn but only the difference in Zn intake was statistically significant. There was no significant difference between smokers and non-smokers for either serum vitamin A (retinol) or vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) level. The plasma vitamin C level of smokers was significantly lower than that of non-smokers (P = 0.0004). Smokers had significantly lower serum Cu (P = 0.04) and higher serum Zn levels (P = 0.003). Further, a significant dose-response relationship between smoking and vitamin C status was observed. Linear-regression analysis showed a significantly positive correlation between dietary intake and plasma vitamin C values in non-smokers (r 0.50; P = 0.0005). On the contrary, no such association was observed in smokers. These findings suggest that smoking may cause an imbalance in antioxidant nutrient intake and status.
