Global arthropod beta-diversity is spatially and temporally structured by latitude

Global biodiversity gradients are generally expected to reflect greater species replacement closer to the equator. However, empirical validation of global biodiversity gradients largely relies on vertebrates, plants, and other less diverse taxa. Here we assess the temporal and spatial dynamics of global arthropod biodiversity dynamics using a beta-diversity framework. Sampling includes 129 sampling sites whereby malaise traps are deployed to monitor temporal changes in arthropod communities. Overall, we encountered more than 150,000 unique barcode index numbers (BINs) (i.e. species proxies). We assess between site differences in community diversity using beta-diversity and the partitioned components of species replacement and richness difference. Global total beta-diversity (dissimilarity) increases with decreasing latitude, greater spatial distance and greater temporal distance. Species replacement and richness difference patterns vary across biogeographic regions. Our findings support long-standing, general expectations of global biodiversity patterns. However, we also show that the underlying processes driving patterns may be regionally linked.

DNA damage in inhabitants exposed to heavy metals near Hudiara drain, Lahore, Pakistan

The current study was conducted on the inhabitants living in the area adjacent to the Hudiara drain using bore water and vegetables adjacent to the Hudiara drain. Toxic heavy metals badly affect human health because of industrial environmental contamination. Particularly hundreds of millions of individuals globally have faced the consequences of consuming water and food tainted with pollutants. Concentrations of heavy metals in human blood were elevated in Hudiara drainings in Lahore city, Pakistan, due to highly polluted industrial effluents. The study determined the health effects of high levels of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Zn, Fe, Pb, Ni, Hg, Cr) on residents of the Hudiara draining area, including serum MDA, 8-Isoprostane, 8-hydroxyguanosine, and creatinine levels. An absorption spectrophotometer was used to determine heavy metals in wate water, drinking water, soil, plants and human beings blood sampleas and ELISA kits were used to assess the level of 8-hydroxyguanosine, MDA, 8-Isoprostane in plasma serum creatinine level. Waste water samples, irrigation water samples, drinking water samples, Soil samples, Plants samples and blood specimens of adult of different weights and ages were collected from the polluted area of the Hudiara drain (Laloo and Mohanwal), and control samples were obtained from the unpolluted site Sheiikhpura, 60 km away from the site. Toxic heavy metals in blood damage the cell membrane and DNA structures, increasing the 8-hydroxyguanosine, MDA, creatinine, and 8-Isoprostane. Toxic metals contaminated bore water and vegetables, resulting in increased levels of creatinine, MDA, Isoprostane, and 8-hydroxy-2-guanosine in the blood of inhabitants from the adjacent area Hudiara drain compared to the control group. In addition,. This study also investigated heavy metal concentrations in meat and milk samples from buffaloes, cows, and goats. In meat, cow samples showed the highest Cd, Cu, Fe and Mn concentrations. In milk also, cows exhibited elevated Cu and Fe levels compared to goats. The results highlight species-specific variations in heavy metal accumulation, emphasizing the need for targeted monitoring to address potential health risks. The significant difference between the two groups i.e., the control group and the affected group, in all traits of the respondents (weight, age, heavy metal values MDA, 8-Isoprostane, 8-hydroxyguaniosine, and serum creatinine level). Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated. The study has shown that the level of serum MDA, 8-Isoprostane, 8-hydroxyguaniosine, or creatinine has not significantly correlated with age, so it is independent of age. This study has proved that in Pakistan, the selected area of Lahore in the villages of Laloo and Mohanwal, excess of heavy metals in the human body damages the DNA and increases the level of 8-Isoprostane, MDA, creatinine, and 8-hydroxyguaniosine. As a result, National and international cooperation must take major steps to control exposure to heavy metals.

Antioxidant production promotes defense mechanism and different gene expression level in Zea mays under abiotic stress

The growth and productivity of maize are severely affected by soil salinity. The crucial determinants for the future performance of plants are productive for seed germination and seedling establishment; however, both stages are liable to soil salinity. For grain, maize is an economically significant crop sensitive to abiotic stresses. However, little is known about defense responses by the salinity-induced antioxidant and oxidative stress in maize. In our work, the commercially available maize variety Raka-Poshi was grown in pots for 30 days under greenhouse conditions. To evaluate the salt-induced oxidative/antioxidant responses in maize for salt stress 0, 25, 50, 75, 100 and 150 mM concentrations, treatments were provided using sodium chloride (NaCl). All the biochemical indices were calculated under all NaCl concentrations, while drought was induced by up to 50% irrigation water. After 30 days of seed germination, the maize leaves were collected for the measurement of lipid peroxidase or malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione reductase (GR), guaiacol peroxidase (GPOD), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), superoxide dismutase (SOD), lipoxygenase (LOX), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APOD) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST). The results revealed a 47% reduction under 150 mM NaCl and 50% drought stress conditions. The results have shown that the successive increase of NaCl concentrations and drought caused an increase in catalase production. With successive increase in NaCl concentration and drought stress, lower levels of H2O2, SOD, and MDA were detected in maize leaves. The results regarding the morphology of maize seedlings indicated a successive reduction in the root length and shoot length under applications of salt and drought stress, while root-to-shoot weights were found to be increased under drought stress and decreased under salt stress conditions During gene expression analysis collectively indicate that, under drought stress conditions, the expression levels of all nine mentioned enzyme-related genes were consistently downregulated.

Cardiovascular risk assessment in inflammatory bowel disease with coronary calcium score

Shared risk factors and mechanisms, such as endothelial dysfunction, lipid dysfunction, and microbiome dysregulation, contribute to the elevated ASCVD risk observed in individuals with IBD. Amidst this landscape, the coronary calcium score emerges as a means to quantify calcified plaque within coronary arteries, offering insights into atherosclerotic burden and potential risk stratification. The integration of the coronary calcium score refines cardiovascular risk assessment, enabling tailored preventive strategies for individuals with IBD. By identifying those at elevated risk, healthcare providers can guide interventions, fostering informed shared decision-making. Research gaps persist, prompting further investigation into mechanisms linking IBD and ASCVD, particularly in the context of intermediate mechanisms and early atherosclerotic changes. The potential of the coronary calcium score extends beyond risk assessment-it holds promise for targeted interventions. Randomized trials exploring the impact of IBD-modifying therapies on ASCVD risk reduction can revolutionize preventive strategies. As precision medicine gains prominence, the coronary calcium score becomes a beacon of insight, illuminating the path toward personalized cardiovascular care for individuals living with IBD. A synthetic approach towards drug modification: 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde based imine-zwitterion preparation, single-crystal study, Hirshfeld surface analysis, and computational investigation

The current work is about the modification of primary amine functionalized drugs, pyrimethamine and 4-amino-N-(2,3-dihydrothiazol-2-yl)benzenesulfonamide, via condensation reaction with 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde to produce new organic zwitterionic compounds (E)-1-(((4-(N-(2,3-dihydrothiazol-2-yl)sulfamoyl)phenyl)iminio)methyl)naphthalen-2-olate (DSPIN) and (E)-1-(((4-amino-5-(4-chlorophenyl)-6-ethylpyrimidin-2-yl)iminio)methyl)naphthalen-2-olate (ACPIN) in methanol as a solvent. The crystal structures of both compounds were confirmed to be imine-based zwitterionic products via single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) analysis which indicated that the stabilization of both crystalline compounds is achieved via various noncovalent interactions. The supramolecular assembly in terms of noncovalent interactions was explored by the Hirshfeld surface analysis. Void analysis was carried out to predict the crystal mechanical response. Compound geometries calculated in the DFT (Density Functional Theory) study showed reasonably good agreement with the experimentally determined structural parameters. Frontier molecular orbital (FMO) analysis showed that the DSPIN HOMO/LUMO gap is by 0.15 eV smaller than the ACPIN HOMO/LUMO gap due to some destabilization of the DSPIN HOMO and some stabilization of its LUMO. The results of the charge analysis implied formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds and suggested formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonding and dipole-dipole and dispersion interactions.

Effects of long-term proton pump inhibitor use on sexual hormones and sexual and reproductive health in female patients

PURPOSE

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are widely used to treat a range of gastrointestinal diseases around the world. Long-term use of PPIs has been associated to a variety of undesirable effects. Although short-term therapy has been shown to have little or no effect on endocrine hormone in women, however, its long-term safety has received little attention. We aimed at evaluating long-term use of PPIs and its effects on female reproductive hormones as well as related clinical consequences.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted in two outpatient gastroenterology clinics in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This study included female patients who had been using PPIs on a regular basis for 3 months or more.

RESULTS

In total of 101 participants, patients with sexual complaints have significantly altered levels of prolactin (p = 0.05), estrogen (p < 0.001) and progesterone (p = 0.001) than patient without sexual complaints. The frequency of amenorrhea (p < 0.001), cyclic disturbances (p < 0.001), breast augmentation (p = 0.001) and painful breast (p = 0.004) were statistically significant in patients with raised serum prolactin values. Serum values of Sex hormone binding globulin SHBG (p < 0.001), estradiol (p = 0.002) and total testosterone (p < 0.001) were significantly altered between normal prolactin and hyperprolactinemic patients.

CONCLUSION

These findings suggest that long-term PPI use may cause endocrine hormone disturbances leading to sexual difficulties in women.

Benzimidazolium quaternary ammonium salts: synthesis, single crystal and Hirshfeld surface exploration supported by theoretical analysis

Owing to the broad applications of quaternary ammonium salts (QAS), we present the synthesis of benzimidazolium-based analogues with variation in the alkyl and alkoxy group at N-1 and N-3 positions. All the compounds were characterized by spectroscopic techniques and found stable to air and moisture both in the solid and solution state. Moreover, molecular structures were established through single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The crystal packing of the compounds was stabilized by numerous intermolecular interactions explored by Hirshfeld surface analysis. The enrichment ratio was calculated for the pairs of chemical species to acquire the highest propensity to form contacts. Void analysis was carried out to check the mechanical response of the compounds. Furthermore, theoretical investigations were also performed to explore the optoelectronic properties of compounds. Natural population analysis (NPA) has been conducted to evaluate the distribution of charges on the synthesized compounds, whereas high band gaps of the synthesized compounds by frontier molecular orbital (FMO) analysis indicated their stability. Nonlinear optical (NLO) analysis revealed that the synthesized QAS demonstrates significantly improved NLO behaviour than the standard urea.

Synthesis, Characterizations, Hirshfeld Surface Analysis, DFT, and NLO Study of a Schiff Base Derived from Trifluoromethyl Amine

We synthesized an imine-based (Schiff base) crystalline organic chromophore, i.e., (E)-2-ethoxy-6-(((3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)imino)methyl)phenol (ETPMP), and explored its nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. The crystalline structure of ETPMP was determined by the XRD technique and equated with the associated structures utilizing a Cambridge Structural Database search. The supramolecular assembly of ETPMP was investigated regarding intermolecular interactions and short contacts by Hirshfeld surface analysis. Void analysis was performed to check the mechanical response of the crystal. Supramolecular assembly was further inspected by interaction energy calculations that were performed with the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) functional. Besides this, the NLO properties of ETPMP and other already reported crystal TFMOS were explored utilizing the M06/6-31G(d,p) functional of the DFT approach. An excellent agreement was observed between XRD and DFT results of geometric parameters of the above-mentioned crystals. Narrow band gap along with bathochromic shift (3.489 eV and 317.225 nm, respectively) were investigated in TFMOS than that of ETPMP. Owing to these unique properties, TFMOS possesses higher linear (⟨a⟩ = 3.835 × 10-23 esu) and nonlinear (γtot. = 1.346 × 10-34 esu) response as compared to ETPMP. The outcomes explicitly show the higher nonlinearity in TFMOS, highlighting its importance in potential NLO applications.

Impact of weather and climate advisories on agricultural outcomes in Pakistan

The earth is warming, and the frequency of extreme weather events have been rapidly growing globally with unprecedented consequences to farming communities. In principle, weather and climate information services (WCIS) can help farmers better manage their activities and farm level outcomes by supporting their decision-making with relevant and usable information to address the potential impacts of expected changing climate conditions. But, in practice, can the availability and use of WCIS help improve agricultural outcomes given the weather and climate related uncertainties? To understand the use and impact of WCIS in the cotton-wheat cropping areas of Pakistan, we conducted a multistage stratified clustered random sample of 612 farm households in the provinces of Punjab and Sindh. Over 55% of the farm households in the sample indicated that they used WCIS provided by the Pakistan Meteorological Department and other sources for making their agricultural decisions. Our analysis, however, suggests that the impact of using WCIS on major farm outcomes (i.e. farm revenue, costs, profits, and input usage) is not statistically significant when compared with those farm households not using WCIS (null result). This result is robust to different estimation techniques (i.e. ordinary least squares, instrumental variable approach, and propensity score matching method). From the focus group discussions, we gathered that farmers perceived WCIS as less reliable, often unclear, and difficult to understand as this information is not translated and transmitted in local languages. Addressing these issues can help reduce the impact of climate and weather variability on farm outcomes in those provinces as well as in Pakistan more generally. Our study suggests that, under uncertainty, emphasis should be on WCIS that farmers can rely on for making farming related decisions.

Zucchini Yellow Mosaic Virus (ZYMV) as a Serious Biotic Stress to Cucurbits: Prevalence, Diversity, and Its Implications for Crop Sustainability

Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV) is a severe threat to cucurbit crops worldwide, including Pakistan. This study was pursued to evaluate the prevalence, geographic distribution, and molecular diversity of ZYMV isolates infecting cucurbits in Pakistan's Pothwar region. Almost all the plant viruses act as a biotic stress on the host plants, which results in a yield loss. These viruses cause losses in single-infection or in mixed-infection cucurbit crops, and we have found a number of mixed-infected samples belonging to the Curubitaceae family. Serological detection of the tested potyviruses in the collected cucurbit samples revealed that ZYMV was the most prevalent virus, with a disease incidence (DI) at 35.2%, followed by Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) with an incidence of 2.2%, and Watermelon mosaic virus (WMV) having an incidence as little as 0.5% in 2016. In the year 2017, a relatively higher disease incidence of 39.7%, 2.4%, and 0.3% for ZYMV, WMV, and PRSV, respectively, was recorded. ZYMV was the most prevalent virus with the highest incidence in Attock, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad, while PRSV was observed to be the highest in Islamabad and Jhelum. WMV infection was observed only in Rawalpindi and Chakwal. Newly detected Pakistani ZYMV isolates shared 95.8-97.0% nucleotide identities among themselves and 77.1-97.8% with other isolates retrieved from GenBank. Phylogenetic relationships obtained using different ZYMV isolates retrieved from GenBank and validated by in silico restriction analysis revealed that four Pakistani isolates clustered with other ZYMV isolates in group IIb with Chinese, Italian, Polish, and French isolates, while another isolate (MK848239) formed a separate minor clade within IIb. The isolate MK8482490, reported to infect bitter gourd in Pakistan, shared a minor clade with a Chinese isolate (KX884570). Recombination analysis revealed that the recently found ZYMV isolate (MK848239) is most likely a recombinant of Pakistani (MK848237) and Italian (MK956829) isolates, with a recombinant breakpoint between 266 and 814 nucleotide positions. Local isolate comparison and recombination detection may aid in the development of a breeding program that identifies resistant sources against recombinant isolates because the ZYMV is prevalent in a few cucurbit species grown in the surveyed areas and causes heavy losses and economic damage to the agricultural community.

Effect of Nasal Continuous Airway Pressure With and Without Surfactant Administration for the Treatment of Respiratory Distress Syndrome in Preterm Neonates

Background Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome is a common cause of respiratory distress in newborns, often resulting from a lack of surfactant production or premature lung breakdown. The objective of this study was to compare the effect of nasal continuous airway pressure with and without surfactant administration for the treatment of respiratory distress syndrome in preterm neonates. Methodology A comparative analytical study was conducted on 100 neonates (group A continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) with surfactant = 50 vs. group B CPAP only= 50 ). The group was allocated to the patient according to sequence. In group A, the neonates were given surfactant by the INSURE (intubation, surfactant, extubation) technique via an endotracheal tube with a single dose of 100 mg/kg/dose within the first hours of life followed by CPAP. In group B, the neonates were given only CPAP after birth. At follow-up after 24 hours, pH, pCO2, pO2, positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP), and FiO2 were documented. All information was recorded on a predesigned questionnaire and results were subjected to statistical analysis to determine the significance of observed differences. Collected data were entered and analyzed using SPSS version 22 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Both groups were compared for mean pH, pCO2, pO2, PEEP, and FiO2 using an independent-sample t-test and effectiveness using a chi-square test. A significant difference was considered when the p-value was ≤0.05. Results Group A had a mean age of 4.84 ± 0.95 hours, while group B had a mean age of 5.5 ± 1.26 hours (p = 0.04). Gender distribution was similar in both groups, with 46.0% males and 54.0% females in group A, and 48.0% males and 52.0% females in group B (p = 0.841). Regarding post-treatment blood gas analysis, group A had a mean pH of 7.30 ± 0.05, and group B had a mean pH of 7.302 ± 0.07. While there was no significant difference in pO2 levels (p = 0.38), there was a substantial difference in pCO2 levels, with group A at 38.26 ± 4.35 and group B at 35.45 ± 4.36 (p = 0.02).CPAP parameters also showed a statistically significant difference in PEEP pCO2, with group A at 4.5 ± 0.73 and group B at 4.16 ± 0.37 (p = 0.004). After treatment, group A exhibited significant improvements in blood gas analysis and CPAP parameters compared to group B. Conclusions The study revealed that both CPAP with and without surfactant treatment effectively treat respiratory distress syndrome in preterm infants, with both being safe, effective, secure, and reducing side effects. However, CPAP treatment without surfactant is a non-invasive and cost-effective option.

Polymorphs of Substituted p-Toluenesulfonanilide: Synthesis, Single-Crystal Analysis, Hirshfeld Surface Exploration, and Theoretical Investigation

Polymorphism is an exciting feature of chemical systems where a compound can exist in different crystal forms. The present investigation is focused on the two polymorphic forms, triclinic (MSBT) and monoclinic (MSBM), of ethyl 3-iodo-4-((4-methylphenyl)sulfonamido)benzoate prepared from ethyl 4-amino-3-iodobenzoate. The prepared polymorphs were unambiguously confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) analysis. According to the SC-XRD results, the molecular configurations of both structures are stabilized by intramolecular N-H···I and C-H···O bonding. The crystal packing of MSBT is different as compared to the crystal packing of MSBM because MSBT is crystallized in the triclinic crystal system with the space group P1̅, whereas MSBM is crystallized in the monoclinic crystal system with the space group P21/c. The molecules of MSBT are interlinked in the form of dimers through N-H···O bonding to form R22(8) loops, while the MSBM molecules are connected with each other in the form of an infinite chain through C-H···O bonding. The crystal packing of both compounds is further stabilized by off-set π···π stacking interactions between phenyl rings, which is found stronger in MSBM as compared to in MSBT. Moreover, Hirshfeld surface exploration of the polymorphs was carried out, and the results were compared with the closely related literature structure. Accordingly, the supramolecular assembly of these polymorphs is mainly stabilized by noncovalent interactions or intermolecular interactions. Furthermore, a density functional theory (DFT) study was also carried out, which provided good support for the SC-XRD and Hirshfeld studies, suggesting the formation of both intramolecular and intermolecular interactions for both compounds.

The effect of average scores in reading, mathematics and science on innovation and income: A quantitative analysis for a group of countries

The purpose of this paper is to The goal of this study is to empirically examine how innovation and income are affected by PISA scores-average scores in math, science, and reading. The specific objectives are threefold. First, we develop a conceptual model that describes the connection between income, innovation, and educational quality as determined by PISA scores. Second, we perform an empirical analysis to see if educational quality as assessed by the PISA scores has an impact on innovation.Third, we also test whether the PISA scores have a positive effect on income (GDP per capita). Using panel mode, we find that education quality has a significant and positive effect on innovation and income. Particularly high math test scores have been found to be an important subject that increases per capita income and innovation.

Synthesis and Antioxidant Studies of 2,4-Dioxothiazolidine-5-acetic Acid Based Organic Salts: SC-XRD and DFT Approach

In the current study, two organic salts (1 and 2) are synthesized, and then crystalline structures are characterized by FTIR, UV spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallographic studies. The organic salts 1 and 2 are optimized at the M06/6-311G(d,p)level of theory and further utilized for analysis of natural bond orbitals (NBOs), natural population, frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs), and global reactivity parameters, which confirmed the stability of the studied compounds and charge transfer phenomenon in the studied compounds. The studies further revealed that 1 and 2 are more stable than 3. The lowest energy merged monomer-coformer conformations were docked as flexible ligands with rigid fungal proteins and DNA receptors. The stagnant binding of the monomer through two H bonds with protein was observed for ligands 1 and 3 while different pattern was found with 2. The coformers formed a single H bond with the active site in 2 and 3 and a single pi-arene H interaction in 1. The two-point ligand-receptor interactions hooked the monomer between DNA base pairs for partial intercalation; pi stacking with additive hydrogen bonding with the base pair led to a strong benzimidazole interaction in 1 and 2, whereas ethylene diamine formed weak H bonding. Thus, the molecular docking predicted that the coformer exhibited DNA intercalation reinforced by its salt formation with benzimidazole 1 and methyl benzimidazole 2. Antioxidant studies depicted that 3 has a higher IC50 value than that of 2,4-D and also the largest value among the studied compounds, whereas 2 showed the lowest value among the studied compounds.

Preparation, Crystal Structure, Supramolecular Assembly, and DFT Studies of Two Organic Salts Bearing Pyridine and Pyrimidine

The effective preparation of two new pyrimidine- and pyridine-based organic crystalline salts with substituted acidic moieties (i.e., (Z)-4-(naphthalen-2-ylamino)-4-oxobut-2-enoic acid (DCNO) and 2-hydroxy-3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid (PCNP)) using methanol as a solvent has been reported. These molecular salts have ionic interactions that are responsible for their structural stabilization in their solid-state assemblies. The crystal structures of DCNO and PCNP were determined by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) technique. The SCXRD study inferred that cations and anions are strongly packed due to N-H···O, N-H···N, and C-H···O noncovalent interactions in DCNO, whereas in PCNP, N-H···N noncovalent interactions are absent. The noncovalent interactions in both organic crystalline salts were comprehensively investigated by Hirshfeld surface analysis. Further, a detailed density functional theory (DFT) study of both compounds was performed. The optimized structures of both compounds supported the existence of the H-bonding and weak dispersion interactions in the synthesized organic crystalline salt structures. Both compounds were shown to have large and noticeably different HOMO/LUMO energy gaps. The atomic charge analysis results supported the SCXRD and HSA results, showing the formation of intermolecular noncovalent interactions in both organic crystalline salts. The results of the natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis confirmed the existence of (relatively weak) noncovalent interactions between the cation and anion moieties of their organic crystalline salts. The global reactivity parameters (GRPs) analysis showed that both organic crystalline salts' compounds should be quite thermodynamically stable and that DCNO should be less reactive than PCNP. For both compounds, the molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) analysis results support the existence of intermolecular electrostatic interactions in their organic crystalline salts.

Occurrence and risk evaluation of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in wastewater and surface water of Lahore, Pakistan

The current study highlights the occurrence, spatial distribution, and risk assessment of 16 endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) including their transformation products (TPs) in the wastewater and surface water of Lahore, Pakistan, using solid-phase extraction followed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The parent EDCs include bisphenol A (BPA), triclosan (TCS), triclocarban (TCC), estrone (E1), estradiol (E2), estriol (E3), ethinylestradiol (EE2), 4-n-octylphenol (4n-OP), and 4-n-nonylphenol (4n-NP). The TPs include two TPs each of BPA, TCC, and estrogens along with a TP of TCS. Most EDCs showed 100% detection frequency in the wastewater with highest median concentration of 1310 ng/L for E3. In the surface water, the highest median concentration was, however, observed for BPA (54.6 ng/L). Spatial variations in terms of sum of concentration due to all EDCs and their TPs were observed at different sampling points which suggest contamination due to industrial waste from nearby industrial estate. Risk evaluation in terms of risk quotient (RQ) and estradiol equivalent factor (EEQ) showed that most of EDCs and their TPs could pose high risk and estrogenicity to the surrounding environment. From the results of the current study, it is observed that the environment of Pakistan is deteriorating and is potential risk for endocrine disruption. It is, therefore, recommended to take stringent measures to make it sustainable for current as well as for future generations.

Evaluation of Antimicrobial, Anticholinesterase Potential of Indole Derivatives and Unexpectedly Synthesized Novel Benzodiazine: Characterization, DFT and Hirshfeld Charge Analysis

The pharmacological effectiveness of indoles, benzoxazepines and benzodiazepines initiated our synthesis of indole fused benoxazepine/benzodiazepine heterocycles, along with enhanced biological usefulness of the fused rings. Activated indoles 5, 6 and 7 were synthesized using modified Bischler indole synthesis rearrangement. Indole 5 was substituted with the trichloroacetyl group at the C⁷ position, yielding 8, exclusively due to the increased nucleophilic character of C⁷. When trichloroacylated indole 8 was treated with basified ethanol or excess amminia, indole acid 9 and amide 10 were yielded, respectively. Indole amide 10 was expected to give indole fused benoxazepine/benzodiazepine 11a/11b on treatment with alpha halo ester followed by a coupling agent, but when the reaction was tried, an unexpectedly rearranged novel product, 1,3-bezodiazine 12, was obtained. The synthetic compounds were screened for anticholinesterase and antibacterial potential; results showed all products to be very important candidates for both activities, and their potential can be explored further. In addition, 1,3-bezodiazine 12 was explored by DFT studies, Hirshfeld surface charge analysis and structural insight to obrain a good picture of the structure and reactivity of the products for the design of derivatised drugs from the novel compound.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure, DFT Calculations, Hirshfeld Surface Analysis and In Silico Drug-Target Profiling of (R)-2-(2-(1,3-Dioxoisoindolin-2-yl)propanamido)benzoic Acid Methyl Ester

The work here reflects synthesis, DFT studies, Hirshfeld charge analysis and crystal data exploration of pharmacologically important (R)-2-(2-(1,3-dioxoisoindolin-2-yl)propanamido)benzoic acid methyl ester (5) to understand its properties for further chemical transformations. The methyl anthranilate (2) was produced by the esterification of anthranilic acid in an acidic medium. The phthaloyl-protected alanine (4) was rendered by the fusion of alanine with phthalic anhydride at 150 °C, followed by coupling with (2) furnished isoindole (5). The characterization of products was performed using IR, UV-Vis, NMR and MS. Single-crystal XRD also verified the structure of (5) in which N-H⋯O bonding stabilizes the molecular configuration of (5), resulting in the formation of S(6) hydrogen-bonded loop. The molecules of isoindole (5) are connected in the form of dimers, and the π⋯π stacking interaction between aromatic rings further stabilizes the crystal packing. DFT studies suggest that HOMO is over the substituted aromatic ring, the LUMO is present mainly over the indole side, and nucleophilic and electrophilic corners point out the reactivity of the product (5). In vitro and in silico analysis of (5) shows its potential as an antibacterial agent targeting DNA gyrase and Dihydroorotase from E. coli and tyrosyl-tRNA synthetase and DNA gyrase from Staphylococcus aureus.

Genome-Wide Association Mapping for Yield and Yield-Related Traits in Rice (Oryza Sativa L.) Using SNPs Markers

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a staple food for more than 50% of the world's population. Rice cultivar improvement is critical in order to feed the world's growing population. Improving yield is one of the main aims of rice breeders. However, yield is a complex quantitative trait controlled by many genes. The presence of genetic diversity is the key factor to improve the yield hence, the presence of diversity in any germplasm is important for yield improvement. In the current study, the rice germplasm was collected from Pakistan and the United States of America and a panel of 100 diverse genotypes was utilized to identify important yield and yield-related traits. For this, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed to identify the genetic loci related to yield. The GWAS on the diverse germplasm will lead to the identification of new genes which can be utilized in the breeding program for improvement of yield. For this reason, firstly, the germplasm was phenotypically evaluated in two growing seasons for yield and yield-related traits. The analysis of variance results showed significant differences among traits which showed the presence of diversity in the current germplasm. Secondly, the germplasm was also genotypically evaluated using 10K SNP. Genetic structure analysis showed the presence of four groups which showed that enough genetic diversity was present in the rice germplasm to be used for association mapping analysis. The results of GWAS identified 201 significant marker trait associations (MTAs. 16 MTAs were identified for plant height, 49 for days to flowering, three for days to maturity, four for tillers per plant, four for panicle length, eight for grains per panicle, 20 unfilled grains per panicle, 81 for seed setting %, four for thousand-grain weight, five for yield per plot and seven for yield per hectare. Apart from this, some pleiotropic loci were also identified. The results showed that panicle length (PL) and thousand-grain weight (TGW) were controlled by a pleiotropic locus OsGRb23906 on chromosome 1 at 10,116,371 cM. The loci OsGRb25803 and OsGRb15974 on chromosomes 4 and 8 at the position of 14,321,111 cM and 6,205,816 cM respectively, showed pleiotropic effects for seed setting % (SS) and unfilled grain per panicle (UG/P). A locus OsGRb09180 on chromosome 4 at 19,850,601 cM was significantly linked with SS and yield/ha. Furthermore, gene annotation was performed, and results indicated that the 190 candidate genes or QTLs that closely linked with studied traits. These candidate genes and novel significant markers could be useful in marker-assisted gene selection and QTL pyramiding to improve rice yield and the selection of potential parents, recombinants and MTAs which could be used in rice breeding programs to develop high-yielding rice varieties for sustainable food security.

Genome-Wide Identification, and In-Silico Expression Analysis of YABBY Gene Family in Response to Biotic and Abiotic Stresses in Potato (Solanum tuberosum)

YABBY is among the specific transcription factor (TF) gene family in plants and plays an important role in the development of the leaves and floral organs. Its specific roles include lateral organ development, the establishment of dorsoventral polarity, and response to abiotic stress. Potato is an important crop worldwide and YABBY genes are not still identified and characterized in potato. So, little has been known about YABBY genes in potato until now. This study was carried out to perform genome-wide analysis, which will provide an in-depth analysis about the role of YABBY genes in potato. There have been seven StYAB genes identified, which are found to be located on seven different chromosomes. Through multiple sequence analyses, it has been predicted that the YABBY domain was present in all seven genes while the C2-C2 domain was found to be absent only in StYAB2. With the help of cis-element analysis, the involvement of StYAB genes in light, stress developmental, and hormonal responsiveness has been found. Furthermore, expression analysis from RNA-seq data of different potato organs indicated that all StYAB genes have a role in the vegetative growth of the potato plant. In addition to this, RNA-seq data also identified StYAB3, StYAB5, and StYAB7 genes showing expression during cadmium, and drought stress, while StYAB6 was highly expressed during a viral attack. Moreover, during the attack of Phytophthora infestans on a potato plant StYAB3, StYAB5, StYAB6, and StYAB7 showed high expression. This study provides significant knowledge about the StYAB gene structures and functions, which can later be used for gene cloning, and functional analysis; this information may be utilized by molecular biologists and plant breeders for the development of new potato lines.

Efficient Synthesis of Imine-Carboxylic Acid Functionalized Compounds: Single Crystal, Hirshfeld Surface and Quantum Chemical Exploration

Two aminobenzoic acid based crystalline imines (HMBA and DHBA) were synthesized through a condensation reaction of 4-aminobenzoic acid and substituted benzaldehydes. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction was employed for the determination of structures of prepared Schiff bases. The stability of super molecular structures of both molecules was achieved by intramolecular H-bonding accompanied by strong, as well as comparatively weak, intermolecular attractive forces. The comparative analysis of the non-covalent forces in HMBA and DHBA was performed by Hirshfeld surface analysis and an interaction energy study between the molecular pairs. Along with the synthesis, quantum chemical calculations were also accomplished at M06/6-311G (d, p) functional of density functional theory (DFT). The frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs), molecular electrostatic potential (MEP), natural bond orbitals (NBOs), global reactivity parameters (GRPs) and natural population (NPA) analyses were also carried out. The findings of FMOs found that Egap for HMBA was examined to be smaller (3.477 eV) than that of DHBA (3.7933 eV), which indicated a greater charge transference rate in HMBA. Further, the NBO analysis showed the efficient intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), as studied by Hirshfeld surface analysis.

Responses of maize hybrids to water stress conditions at different developmental stages: accumulation of reactive oxygen species, activity of enzymatic antioxidants and degradation in kernel quality traits

Sustainable maize production under changing climatic conditions, especially heat and water stress conditions is one of the key challenges that need to be addressed immediately. The current field study was designed to evaluate the impact of water stress on morpho-physiological, biochemical, reactive oxygen species, antioxidant activity and kernel quality traits at different plant growth stages in maize hybrids. Four indigenous i.e., YH-5427, YH-5482, YH-5395, JPL-1908, and one multinational maize hybrid i.e., NK-8441 (Syngenta Seeds) were used for the study. Four stress treatments (i) Control (ii) 3-week water stress at pre-flowering stage (iii) 3-week water stress at anthesis stage (iv) 3-week water stress at grain filling/post-anthesis stage. The presence of significant oxidative stress was revealed by the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROXs) i.e., H2O2 (1.9 to 5.8 µmole g−1 FW) and malondialdehyde (120.5 to 169.0 nmole g−1 FW) leading to severe negative impacts on kernel yield. Moreover, a severe reduction in photosynthetic ability (50.6%, from 34.0 to 16.8 µmole m−2 s−1), lower transpirational rate (31.3%, from 3.2 to 2.2 mmol m−2 s−1), alterations in plant anatomy, reduced pigments stability, and deterioration of kernel quality was attributed to water stress. Water stress affected all the three studied growth stages, the pre-flowering stage being the most vulnerable while the post-anthesis stage was the least affected stage to drought stress. Antioxidant activity was observed to increase under all stress conditions in all maize hybrids, however, the highest antioxidant activity was recorded at the anthesis stage and in maize hybrids YH-5427 i.e., T-SOD activity was increased by 61.3% from 37.5 U mg−1 pro to 60.5 U mg−1 pro while CAT activity was maximum under water stress conditions 8.3 U mg−1 pro as compared to 10.3 U mg−1 pro under control (19.3%). The overall performance of maize hybrid YH-5427 was much more promising than other hybrids, attributed to its higher photosynthetic activity, and better antioxidant defense mechanism. Therefore, this hybrid could be recommended for cultivation in drought-prone areas.

Exploring Probenecid Derived 1,3,4-Oxadiazole-Phthalimide Hybrid as α-Amylase Inhibitor: Synthesis, Structural Investigation, and Molecular Modeling

1,3,4-Oxadiazole moiety is a crucial pharmacophore in many biologically active compounds. In a typical synthesis, probenecid was subjected to a sequence of reactions to obtain a 1,3,4-oxadiazole–phthalimide hybrid (PESMP) in high yields. The NMR (1H and 13C) spectroscopic analysis initially confirmed the structure of PESMP. Further spectral aspects were validated based on a single-crystal XRD analysis. Experimental findings were confirmed afterwards by executing a Hirshfeld surface (HS) analysis and quantum mechanical computations. The HS analysis showed the role of the π⋯π stacking interactions in PESMP. PESMP was found to have a high stability and lower reactivity in terms of global reactivity parameters. α-Amylase inhibition studies revealed that the PESMP was a good inhibitor of α-amylase with an s value of 10.60 ± 0.16 μg/mL compared with that of standard acarbose (IC50 = 8.80 ± 0.21 μg/mL). Molecular docking was also utilized to reveal the binding pose and features of PESMP against the α-amylase enzyme. Via docking computations, the high potency of PESMP and acarbose towards the α-amylase enzyme was unveiled and confirmed by docking scores of −7.4 and −9.4 kcal/mol, respectively. These findings shine a new light on the potential of PESMP compounds as α-amylase inhibitors.

Native and Non-Native Bemisia tabaci NAFME Haplotypes Can Be Implicated in Dispersal of Endemic and Introduced Begomoviruses in Oman

Irrigated agriculture and global trade expansion have facilitated diversification and spread of begomoviruses (Geminiviridae), transmitted by the Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) cryptic species. Oman is situated on major crossroads between Africa and South Asia, where endemic/native and introduced/exotic begomoviruses occur in agroecosystems. The B. tabaci 'B mitotype' belongs to the North Africa-Middle East (NAFME) cryptic species, comprising at least eight endemic haplotypes, of which haplotypes 6 and/or 8 are recognized invasives. Prevalence and associations among native and exotic begomoviruses and NAFME haplotypes in Oman were investigated. Nine begomoviral species were identified from B. tabaci infesting crop or wild plant species, with 67% and 33% representing native and exotic species, respectively. Haplotypes 2, 3, and 5 represented 31%, 3%, and 66% of the B. tabaci population, respectively. Logistic regression and correspondence analyses predicted 'strong'- and 'close' virus-vector associations involving haplotypes 5 and 2 and the exotic chili leaf curl virus (ChiLCV) and endemic tomato yellow leaf curl virus-OM, respectively. Patterns favor a hypothesis of relaxed virus-vector specificity between an endemic haplotype and the introduced ChiLCV, whereas the endemic co-evolved TYLCV-OM and haplotype 2 virus-vector relationship was reinforced. Thus, in Oman, at least one native haplotype can facilitate the spread of endemic and introduced begomoviruses.

Synthesis, Characterization, Crystal Structures, and Supramolecular Assembly of Copper Complexes Derived from Nitroterephthalic Acid along with Hirshfeld Surface Analysis and Quantum Chemical Studies

Two new Cu(II) carboxylate complexes, Cu-NTA and Cu-DNTA, were prepared by treating 2-nitroterephthalic acid with CuSO₄·5H₂O at room temperature. The synthesized complexes were characterized by elemental (CHN), FT-IR, and thermogravimetric analysis. The crystal structures of both complexes were explored by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, which inferred that the coordination geometry is slightly distorted octahedral and square pyramidal in Cu-NTA and Cu-DNTA, respectively. The non-covalent interactions that are the main feature of the supramolecular assembly were investigated by Hirshfeld surface analysis for both complexes. The propensity of each pair of chemical moieties involved in crystal-packing interactions was determined by the enrichment ratio. Quantum chemical computations were performed to optimize the molecular geometry of complex Cu-NTA and compared it with the experimental single crystal structure, which was found to be in sensible agreement with the experimental structure of the complex. The DFT method was used to see the potential of the selected Cu-NTA complex for linear and nonlinear optical properties. The static NLO polarizability <γ> of complex Cu-NTA was calculated to be 86.28 × 10^-36 esu at M06 functional and 6-31G*/LANL2DZ basis set, which was rationally large to look for NLO applications of complex Cu-NTA. Additionally, the molecular electrostatic potential and frontier molecular orbitals were also computed with the same methodology to see electronic characteristics and ground-state electronic charge distributions.

Long-Term Proton Pump Inhibitor Therapy and its Effect on Endocrine Hormones in Selected Patient Population

Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are commonly prescribed medications for a variety of gastrointestinal disorders around the globe. Long-term utilization of proton pump inhibitors is linked with different adverse events. Although, short-term therapy has been demonstrated to have little or no impact on endocrine hormones in men, yet its safety with long-term use has poorly been studied. We aimed to evaluate the impacts of long-term utilization of proton pump inhibitors on male reproductive hormones and its clinical outcomes. A cross-sectional study was performed in two out-patients gastroenterology clinics in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Male patients who were using PPIs regularly for≥3 months were enrolled in this study. Among 65 enrolled participants, patients with sexual complaints have significant variations in mean serum levels of prolactin (p<0.001), sex hormone binding globulins (p=0.043), total testosterone (p<0.001) and progesterone (p=0.001) as compared to patients without sexual complaints. Significantly high values of prolactin mean ranks were observed in patient with sexual complaints (p<0.001). There were statistically significant correlations of serum levels of sex hormone binding globulins (p=0.003), total testosterone (p=0.008) and progesterone (p<0.001) with serum prolactin levels. Similarly, statistically significant variation was observed for decreased libido (p=0.001), erectile dysfunction (p=0.001) and decreased semen mass ((p<0.001) between normal and hyperprolactinemic PPI users. Highly significant differences were observed in serum sex hormone binding globulins (p<0.001), total testosterone (p<0.001) and progesterone (p<0.001) values in normal and hyperprolactinemic groups. In conclusion, long-term utilization of PPI may induce endocrine hormone disruption with subsequent sexual complications.

Estimation of economic, environmental, and social efficiency for sustainable development in G-8 and SAARC countries: a data envelopment analysis

In the recent era, economic growth is not enough to represent sustainable development. Sustainable development has three dimensions (i.e., economic, social, and environment). This study estimated the economic, social, and environmental efficiency using data from 2000 to 2021. Input-oriented data envelopment analysis shows strong heterogeneity across developed (G-8) and developing countries (SAARC). There is a potential to increase economic and environmental efficiency in the G-8 and SAARC countries. The average economic efficiencies are 0.682 and 0.414, which implies the possibility of the same output (GDP/capita) by using 31.8% and 58.6% fewer inputs in G-8 and SAARC countries, respectively. The social efficiency score is more than 0.980 in both panels. The average environmental efficiencies are 0.712 and 0.724, which implies that selected countries can obtain the same output (CO₂ emission reduction) by using 28.8% and 27.6% fewer inputs in G-8 and SAARC countries, respectively. The top three economically efficient countries are (a) the USA, the UK, and Japan in the G-8 panel and (b) Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan in the SAARC panel. The top three environmentally efficient countries are (a) France, the UK, and Italy in the G-8 panel and (b) Afghanistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh in the SAARC panel. It is recommended to adopt suitable policies to reduce emission, minimize waste, efficient utilization of resources, increase forest cover, and incentive for clean technologies. It is suggested to promote renewable energy through the provision of micro-credit to the poor, subsidizing renewable energy technologies, implementation of stringent environmental policies, and increasing awareness. It is essential to invest in eco-friendly and innovative technologies; thus, the government should encourage green practices in production. Human development is recommended to increase the living standard and healthy life. The government should invest in the health system and conduct seminars on general health awareness. Investment in basic infrastructure (drinking water, sanitation, and clean fuel) is essential to increase the living standard. The G-8 countries should provide financial and technological help to the SAARC countries.

Acid catalyzed one-pot approach towards the synthesis of curcuminoid systems: unsymmetrical diarylidene cycloalkanones, exploration of their single crystals, optical and nonlinear optical properties

In the present study crystalline unsymmetrical diarylidene ketone derivatives BNTP and BDBC have been prepared by two sequential acid catalyzed aldol condensation reactions in a one pot manner. The crystal structures of both compounds were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis which revealed the presence of H-bonding interactions of type C-H⋯O, along with weak C-H⋯π and weak π⋯π stacking interactions that are involved in the crystal stabilization of both organic compounds. Hirshfeld surface analysis is carried out for the broad investigation of the intermolecular interactions in both compounds. The quantum chemical investigation was performed on the optimized molecular geometries of BNTP and BDBC to calculate optical and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. The density functional theory (DFT) study showed that the third-order NLO polarizabilities of compounds BNTP and BDBC are found to be 226.45 × 10^-36 esu and 238.72 × 10^-36 esu, respectively, which indicates noticeable good NLO response properties. Additionally, the BNTP and BDBC molecules also showed the HOMO-LUMO orbital gaps of 5.96 eV and 6.06 eV, respectively. Furthermore, the computation of UV-visible spectra of the titled compounds indicated a limited and/or no absorption above the 400 nm region, directing a good transparency and NLO property trade-off for both synthesized compounds that may play a significant contribution in the future for optoelectronic technologies.

Using DNA metabarcoding to assess insect diversity in citrus orchards

Background

DNA metabarcoding is rapidly emerging as a cost-effective approach for large-scale biodiversity assessment and pest monitoring. The current study employed metabarcoding to assess insect diversity in citrus orchards in Ganzhou City, Jiangxi, China in both 2018 and 2019. Insects were sampled using Malaise traps deployed in three citrus orchards producing a total of 43 pooled monthly samples.

Methods

The Malaise trap samples were sequenced following DNA metabarcoding workflow. Generated sequences were curated and analyzed using two cloud databases and analytical platforms, the barcode of life data system (BOLD) and multiplex barcode research and visualization environment (mBRAVE).

Results

These platforms assigned the sequences to 2,141 barcode index numbers (BINs), a species proxy. Most (63%) of the BINs were shared among the three sampling sites while BIN sharing between any two sites did not exceed 71%. Shannon diversity index (H') showed a similar pattern of BIN assortment at the three sampling sites. Beta diversity analysis by Jaccard similarity coefficient (J) and Bray-Curtis distance matrix (BC) revealed a high level of BIN similarity among the three sites (J = 0.67-0.68; BC = 0.19-0.20). Comparison of BIN records against all those on BOLD made it possible to identify 40% of the BINs to a species, 57% to a genus, 97% to a family and 99% to an order. BINs which received a species match on BOLD were placed in one of four categories based on this assignment: pest, parasitoid, predator, or pollinator. As this study provides the first baseline data on insect biodiversity in Chinese citrus plantations, it is a valuable resource for research in a broad range of areas such as pest management and monitoring beneficial insects in citrus gardens.

Molecular profiling of bacterial blight resistance in Malaysian rice cultivars

Bacteria blight is one of the most serious bacterial diseases of rice worldwide. The identification of genetic potential against bacterial blight in the existing rice resources is a prerequisite to develop multigenic resistance to combat the threat of climate change. This investigation was conducted to evaluate alleles variation in 38 Malaysian cultivars using thirteen Simple Sequences Repeats markers and one Sequence Tagged Sites (STS) marker which were reported to be linked with the resistance to bacterial blight. Based on molecular data, a dendrogram was constructed which classified the rice cultivars into seven major clusters at 0.0, 0.28 and 0.3 of similarity coefficient. Cluster 5 was the largest group comprised of ten rice cultivars where multiple genes were identified. However, xa13 could not be detected in the current rice germplasm, whereas xa2 was detected in 25 cultivars. Molecular analysis revealed that Malaysian rice cultivars possess multigenic resistance.

Synthesis, X-ray diffraction analysis, quantum chemical studies and α-amylase inhibition of probenecid derived S-alkylphthalimide-oxadiazole-benzenesulfonamide hybrids

Sulphonamide and 1,3,4-oxadiazole moieties are present as integral structural parts of many drugs and pharmaceuticals. Taking into account the significance of these moieties, we herein present the synthesis, single-crystal X-ray analysis, DFT studies, and α-amylase inhibition of probenecid derived two S-alkylphthalimide-oxadiazole-benzenesulfonamide hybrids. The synthesis has been accomplished in high yields. The final structures of both hybrids have been established completely with the help of different spectro-analytical techniques, including NMR, FTIR, HR-MS, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. In an effort to confirm the experimental findings, versatile quantum mechanical calculations and Hirshfeld Surface analysis have been performed. α-Amylase inhibition assay has been executed to investigate the enzyme inhibitory potential of both hybrids. The low IC50 value (76.92 ± 0.19 μg/mL) of hybrid 2 shows the good α-amylase inhibition potential of the respective compound. Ultimately, the binding affinities and features of the two hybrids are elucidated utilising a molecular docking technique against the α-amylase enzyme.

Synthesis, Structural, and Intriguing Electronic Properties of Symmetrical Bis-Aryl-α,β-Unsaturated Ketone Derivatives

Three symmetrical bis-aryl-α,β-unsaturated ketone derivatives, 2,6-di((E)-benzylidene)-cyclohexan-1-one (DBC), 2,6-bis((E)-4-chlorobenzylidene)cyclohexan-1-one (BCC), and (1E,1'E,4E,4'E)-5,5'-(1,4-phenylene)bis(2-methyl-1-phenylpenta-1,4-dien-3-one) (PBMP), have been prepared using the aldol condensation approach toward ketones having two enolizable sites. The structures of DBC, BCC, and PBMP have been resolved via spectrometric methods. Moreover, the crystal structure of PBMP is determined by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) technique, which revealed that the PBMP molecular assembly is stabilized by the intermolecular C-H···O bonding and C-O···π and weak T-shaped offset π···π stacking interactions. The Hirshfeld surface analysis (HSA) of the PBMP crystal structure was performed as well, and the results were compared with the results of DBC and BCC. The density functional theory (DFT) study results revealed that the longer conjugated molecule of PBMP has smaller but still quite significant HOMO-LUMO gaps compared to the smaller molecules of BCC and DBC. The natural population analysis (NPA) and natural bonding orbital (NBO) analysis were performed. Accordingly, the hydrogen bonding and dipole-dipole interactions stabilize the crystal structures of these compounds. Additionally, the NBO analysis showed numerous high-energy stabilizing interactions for the PBMP compound due to the presence of numerous delocalized and relatively easily polarizable π-electrons, thus implying its significant thermodynamic stability. According to the global reactivity parameter (GRP) analysis, the compounds BCC and DBC are relatively stable in redox processes and have high thermodynamic stability and relatively lower reactivity in general. The molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) analysis results imply potential formation of the intermolecular hydrogen bonding and dispersion interactions, which stabilizes the crystal structures of these compounds.

Browsing or buying: A serial mediation analysis of consumer’s online purchase intentions in times of COVID-19 pandemic

The role of digitization and globalization have changed consumers’ online buying behaviors, specifically in the times of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. This seriously influences the online retail industry in developing countries that are already struggling to move toward digital trading through e-business. Pakistan being a developing country is no exception, and it is, therefore, pertinent to examine factors that contribute to digital trading. Employing theories of reasoned action and the technology acceptance model, this study aims to investigate how personal innovativeness and perceived usefulness impact consumers’ online purchase intentions through a serial mediational model. The data were collected through an online survey from 410 respondents. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to test the proposed model. This study showed significant results for the direct effect of personal innovativeness and perceived usefulness on online purchase intentions as well as the indirect serial effect via internet browsing and attitude toward online purchasing. The study results have some important practical implications for selling firms, especially in the times of COVID-19. The study suggests that online retailers should be more responsive to the aforementioned factors to facilitate consumers to spend more time browsing, which influences consumers’ interest and intention to make online purchases. As the social distancing and lockdown approaches were implemented in Pakistan and other parts of the world, the trend toward online purchases has increased. Due to this shift in the overall purchasing behavior of consumers and the potential for strong growth in e-commerce, organizations need to consider the post-COVID situation to expand their business in an online platform for addressing the future pandemic crisis.

Exploring Highly Functionalized Tetrahydropyridine as a Dual Inhibitor of Monoamine Oxidase A and B: Synthesis, Structural Analysis, Single Crystal XRD, Supramolecular Assembly Exploration by Hirshfeld Surface Analysis, and Computational Studies

Ethyl 4-(4-fluorophenylamino)-2,6-bis(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-1-(4-fluoro-phenyl)-1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridine-3-carboxylate (FTEAA) has been synthesized efficiently in an iodine-catalyzed five-component reaction of 4-fluoroaniline, 4-trifluoromethyl benzaldehyde, and ethyl acetoacetate in methanol at 55 °C for 12 h. Various spectro-analytical techniques such as ¹H and ¹³C NMR and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy have validated the structure of FTEAA. Further confirmation of the structure of FTEAA has been established on the basis of single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The supramolecular assembly of FTEAA in terms of strong and comparatively weak noncovalent interactions is fully investigated by Hirshfeld surface analysis, the interaction energy between pairs of molecules, and energy frameworks. The void analysis is conducted to explore the strength and stability of the crystal structure. Furthermore, molecular docking analysis was computationally performed to see the potential intermolecular interactions between the selected proteins and FTEAA. The binding interaction energies are found to be -8.8 and -9.6 kcal/mol for the proteins MAO-B (PDB ID: 2V5Z) and MAO-A (PDB ID: 2Z5X), respectively. These reasonably good binding energies (more negative values) indicate the efficient associations between the FTEAA and target proteins. The proteins and FTEAA were also analyzed for intermolecular interactions. FTEAA and proteins interact in a variety of ways, like conventional hydrogen bonds, carbon-hydrogen bonds, alkyl, π-alkyl, and halide interactions.

Genome wide association mapping of yield and various desirable agronomic traits in Rice

BACKGROUND

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the staple foods worldwide. To feed the growing population, the improvement of rice cultivars is important. To make the improvement in the rice breeding program, it is imperative to understand the similarities and differences of the existing rice accessions to find out the genetic diversity. Previous studies demonstrated the existence of abundant elite genes in rice landraces. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed for yield and yield related traits to find the genetic diversity.

DESIGN

Experimental study.

METHODS AND RESULTS

A total of 204 SSRs markers were used among 17 SSRs found to be located on each chromosome in the rice genome. The diversity was analyzed using different genetic characters i.e., the total number of alleles (TNA), polymorphic information content (PIC), and gene diversity by Power markers, and the values for each genetic character per marker ranged from 2 to 9, 0.332 to 0.887 and 0.423 to 0.900 respectively across the whole genome. The results of population structure identified four main groups. MTA identified several markers associated with many agronomically important traits. These results will be very useful for the selection of potential parents, recombinants, and MTAs that govern the improvements and developments of new high yielding rice varieties.

CONCLUSIONS

Analysis of diversity in germplasm is important for the improvement of cultivars in the breeding program. In the present study, the diversity was analyzed with different methods and found that enormous diversity was present in the studied rice germplasm. The structure analysis found the presence of 4 genetic groups in the existing germplasm. A total of 129 marker-trait associations (MTAs) have been found in this study.
