Abstract
PURPOSE Alveolar osteitis (dry sockets) is a painful condition characterized by a limited immune response. It is typically caused by the removal of blood clots from extracted tooth sockets, which leads to the fermentation of trapped food remnants by oral bacteria in the cavities, producing high concentrations of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). This study examined the effects of SCFAs on immunity and bone metabolism. METHODS Mouse macrophage Raw264.7 cells were treated with oral bacteria supernatants or SCFA mixtures, and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) levels were determined by western blot. The same cells were treated with SCFA mixtures in the presence of receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand (RANKL), and osteoclast-like cells were counted. MC3T3-E1 cells were treated with SCFA mixtures and stained with alizarin red S. RESULTS Raw264.7 cells treated with oral bacterial culture supernatants of Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum inhibited lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced iNOS production, likely due to SCFA content. SCFA mixtures mimicking these supernatants inhibited the number of RANKL-induced tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP)-positive cells and MC3T3-E1 cell mineralization. CONCLUSION These data suggest that SCFAs produced by P. gingivalis and F. nucleatum may reduce the inflammatory response and mildly induce mineralization of the alveolar walls. These results may contribute to the understanding of alveolar osteitis.

Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) In pancreatic cancer, a tumor is surrounded by the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, which is subject to changes in location, shape, and contents. Due to these inter-fractional changes, proton beam therapy (PBT) for pancreatic cancer may result in unintentionally high doses to the GI tract. Daily adaptive re-planning can solve this problem, but is not yet established with PBT due to its resource intensive characteristics. This study aims to evaluate the GI tract dose using weekly computed tomography (CTw) and the possibility of dose realignment adaptation by shifting the isocenter (IC) of the PBT plan, which does not require re-planning. MATERIALS/METHODS We retrospectively analyzed 6 consecutive patients with unresectable pancreatic cancer treated with real-time-image gated PBT using a fiducial marker. The planning CT was scanned at the natural expiration of respiration and a PBT plan of 60 GyE in 25 fractions (baseline plan, PLANbase) was created. The CTw images were acquired the day before start of PBT and once a week during the PBT course thereafter. The PLANbase was rigidly transferred to the CTw based on the relationship between the three-dimensional coordinates of the fiducial marker and those of the IC in the PLANbase. The PLANeval was created by recalculating the PLANbase on the CTw. We evaluated the doses to the stomach, duodenum, and intestines in the PLANeval according to the following criteria: Dmax of the stomach < 60 GyE, duodenum and intestines < 55 GyE, and D1cc of the stomach < 55 GyE, duodenum and intestines < 54 GyE. In addition, we investigated the GI tract dose realignment adaptation for the PLANeval with its IC shifted 2mm, 4mm, and 6mm in each of 6 directions (right, left, ventral, dorsal, cranial, and caudal), respectively. RESULTS A total of 35 PLANeval were created for the CTw. In the PLANbase of the 6 patients, the average of Dmax and D1cc of the stomach, duodenum and intestines were 50.7 GyE (range, 46.7-53.6) and 50.0 GyE (45.0-53.2), 49.2 GyE (44.3-51.7) and 48.8 GyE (43.7-51.5), and 49.2 GyE (44.8-52.0) and 48.9 GyE (44.6-51.8), respectively. In the PLANeval, the average of Dmax and D1cc of the stomach, duodenum, and intestines were 53.3GyE (43.8-61.4) and 52.8 GyE (43.2-61.1), 51.0 GyE (36.1-60.0) and 50.3 GyE (35.4-59.8), and 52.5 GyE (36.6-61.0) and 51.9 (34.4-60.9) GyE, respectively. Twenty-two of the 35 PLANeval (63 %) did not meet at least one of the GI tract dose criteria. In 11 of 22 PLANeval with higher doses to the GI tract, the IC shift resulted in GI dose reductions and all dose criteria were met. The minimum amount of the IC shift required to meet the criteria was 2 mm for 8 plans and 4 mm for 3 plans. The remaining 11 PLANeval did not meet the criteria using dose realignment adaptation by shifting the isocenter. CONCLUSION Adaptive replanning is necessary for PBT for pancreatic cancers due to excessive GI tract doses in more than 60% of the plans. Dose realignment adaptation by shifting the IC, which does not require re-planning, may be an option in adaptive treatment strategies.

Abstract
The recently developed biphasic calcium phosphate cement (BCPC) consists of α-tricalcium phosphate-tetracalcium phosphate as the solid phase and calcium phosphate solution as the liquid phase. BCPC powder is composed of a single solid solution with a monomodal size distribution. Here, we used a bacterial leakage model to examine the utility of BCPC as a seal for root-end filling. We prepared large (median particle size=9.96 µm; BCPC-L) and small (median particle size=4.84 µm; BCPC-S) BCPC powders. In total, 45 single-rooted teeth were instrumented, resected at the root-end, and retrofilled with experimental materials. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) was used as the control. After visual confirmation of BCPC powder size and retrofilling quality by microscopy, bacterial leakage tests were conducted using Enterococcus faecalis. The bacterial leakage tests did not reveal any significant differences between BCPC-S and MTA. Our findings suggest that BCPC-S is useful for root-end filling.

Abstract
Although a surface pre-reacted glass ionomer (S-PRG) exerts a suppressive effect on Candida albicans (C. albicans) activity and growth, its influence on the expression of the lipase gene (LIP) family including LIP1-LIP10, an indicator of clinical infection, has not yet been investigated. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the effect of S-PRG filler eluates on LIP expression in C. albicans using real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction. Candida albicans was treated with an S-PRG filler diluted at ratios of 1:32 and 1:64 for 24 h at 37°C. The diluted S-PRG filler eluates (1:32) suppressed lipase activity in C. albicans by downregulating LIP5 (0.54±0.25 relative to that of the control) and LIP8 (0.35±0.074) expression after 24 h, which corresponded with decreased lipase activity. At a dilution factor of 1:64, there was no significant difference in LIP expression. Thus, the S-PRG filler eluate has potential to suppress fungal activity by downregulating LIP expression.

Abstract
Introduction On July 22, 2020, the Japanese government launched the "Go to Travel" campaign that subsidizes 50% of personal travel expenditure to support the tourism industry under the COVID-19 pandemic. This policy was controversial from the viewpoint of infection spread and was temporarily cancelled in December 2020, though there was no statistical evidence. Methods This is the first study that measures the extent to which this campaign increased COVID-19 cases. This study regards the campaign as a natural experiment: although Tokyo and its commuting areas experienced the same time-series trends of COVID-19 cases before the "Go To Travel" campaign, this campaign was implemented in areas outside Tokyo, but not in Tokyo. Then, the comparison (difference-in-differences) yields the campaign's effect. Results The estimation shows that the "Go To Travel" campaign significantly raised the increment rate of cases by 23.7%-34.4% during July 30-August 4. There is no significant effect after August 5. In addition, our simulation identified the number of campaign-related cases in each city. Conclusions Although the campaign significantly spread COVID-19, the effect was not continuous to permanently change the time-series trend.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We have developed a novel radiopaque tiltmeter (ROT) that can indicate patient tilt during a radiography examination and display it on X-ray images. This study evaluated the effect of variation of patient tilt on the reproducibility of Fowler's position for chest radiography and the accuracy of the ROT. METHODS We evaluated the reproducibility of Fowler's position based on changes from the first day in the central venous catheter (CVC) tip position and the cardiothoracic ratio (CTR) with and without a digital tiltmeter to verify its efficacy in patients who underwent mobile chest radiography. The ROT contains radiopaque liquid consisting of white barium sulfate solution and oil and has a scale bar of 15°-75° with increments of 15° to indicate ROT tilt. The ROT tilt was increased from 10° to 80° in increments of 10°. We then evaluated (1) the difference between the ROT tilt and the tilt measured with a digital tiltmeter, and (2) the ROT tilt displayed on the X-ray image. RESULTS With regard to reproducibility in Fowler's position, changes in the CVC tip position were 2.8 ± 3.9 mm and 10.7 ± 10.6 mm with and without the tiltmeter, respectively (p < 0.05) and the respective rates of change in the CTR were 0.7% ± 0.6% and 4.0% ± 2.1% (p < 0.05). Differences between the ROT tilt and the tilt measured by the digital tiltmeter were within ±2.5°. All ROT tilts displayed on the X-ray images were recognized exactly as each tilt. CONCLUSION Our novel ROT had the potential to accurately indicate patient tilt during chest radiography, which could be helpful in terms of reproducibility and precise follow-up. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Use of the ROT for determination of patient tilt can improve reproducibility in Fowler's position, allowing more accurate serial X-ray imaging.

Abstract
AIM To assess the utility of dynamic chest radiography (DCR) during the preoperative evaluation of pleural adhesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sequential chest radiographs of 146 patients with lung cancer were acquired during forced respiration using a DCR system. The presence of pleural adhesions and their grades were determined by retrospective surgery video assessment (absent: 121, present: 25). The maximum inspiration to expiration lung area ratio was used as an index for air intake volume. A ratio of ≥0.65 was regarded as insufficient respiration. Two radiologists assessed the images for pleural adhesions based on motion findings. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) were compared for each adhesion grade and patient group (patients with sufficient/insufficient respiration). Pearson's chi-squared test compared the group. Statistical significance was set at p<0.05. RESULTS DCR correctly identified 22/25 patients with pleural adhesions, with 20 false-positive results (sensitivity, 88%; specificity, 83.5%; PPV, 52.4%; NPV, 97.12%). Although the diagnostic performances for the various adhesion grades were similar, specificity in patients with sufficient respiration increased to 93.9% (31/33), identifying all cases except for those with loose adhesions. CONCLUSIONS DCR images revealed restricted and/or distorted motions in lung structures and structural tension in patients with pleural adhesions. DCR could be a useful technique for routine preoperative evaluation of pleural adhesions. Further development of computerised methods can assist in the quantitative assessment of abnormal motion findings.

Abstract
We aimed to evaluate the properties of a novel tissue conditioner containing a surface pre-reacted glass-ionomer (S-PRG) nanofiller. Tissue conditioners containing 0 (control), 2.5, 5, 10, 20, or 30 wt% S-PRG nanofiller or 10 or 20 wt% S-PRG microfiller were prepared. The S-PRG nanofillers and microfillers were observed using scanning electron microscopy. The ion release, acid buffering capacity, detail reproduction, consistency, Shore A0 hardness, surface roughness, and Candida albicans adhesion of the tissue conditioners were examined. The results indicated that the nanofiller particles were smaller and more homogeneous in size than the microfiller particles. In addition, Al, B, F, and Sr ions eluted from S-PRG were generally found to decrease after 1 day. Acid neutralization was confirmed in a concentration-dependent manner. The mechanical properties of tissue conditioners containing S-PRG nanofiller were clinically acceptable according to ISO standard 10139-1:2018, although the surface roughness increased with increasing filler content. Conditioners with 5-30 wt% nanofiller had a sublethal effect on C. albicans and reduced fungal adhesion in vitro. In summary, tissue conditioner containing at least 5 wt% S-PRG nanofiller can reduce C. albicans adhesion and has potential as an alternative soft lining material.

Abstract
The antifungal effect of diglyceryl dicaprylate, one of the emulsifiers used as a food additive, on Candida albicans that is a pathogenic fungus that is predominant in the oral cavity was investigated. This component did not affect C. albicans growth; however, it suppressed some virulence factors in a concentration-dependent manner. Furthermore, the suppression of pathogenic factors, such as biofilm formation, adhesion, highly pathogenic dimorphism, and ability to produce proteolytic enzymes, was due to reduction in mRNA expression levels of genes involved in fungal pathogenicities. From these results, this emulsifier could potentially prevent the development of intraoral and extraoral diseases involving C. albicans and could potentially use in oral care and improvement of quality of life.

Abstract
The antimicrobial effects of denture adhesives containing novel surface pre-reacted glass-ionomer (S-PRG) fillers were assessed. We prepared denture adhesives containing S-PRG (particle sizes: 1 and 3 µm; quantities: 5, 7.5, and 10 wt%). We evaluated acid buffering capacity, ion release, and antimicrobial effects of denture adhesives with and without S-PRG. Significantly higher pH changes were observed in 1 µm S-PRG adhesives than in 3 µm S-PRG adhesives. Adhesives containing 7.5 and 10 wt% S-PRG exhibited significantly higher ion release than adhesives with 5 wt% S-PRG. The 1µm-10wt% S-PRG denture adhesive exhibited significantly lower colony-forming units on the denture adhesive contact surface than in the control group; additionally, it exhibited excellent acid buffering capacity, ion release properties, and antimicrobial effect against C. albicans, C. glabrata, S. mutans, and A. naeslundii. Longer contact periods resulted in significantly lower adhesion of Candida albicans to the denture base resin treated with denture adhesive.

Abstract
Controlling the oral microbial flora is putatively thought to prevent not only oral diseases, but also systemic diseases caused by oral diseases. This study establishes the antibacterial effect of the novel bioactive substance “S-PRG filler” on oral bacteria. We examined the state of oxidative stress caused by the six types of ions released in eluate from the S-PRG filler in oral bacterial cells. Moreover, we investigated the effects of these ions on the growth and pathogenicity of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. We found that the released ions affected SOD amount and hydrogen peroxide in bacterial cells insinuating oxidative stress occurrence. In bacterial culture, growth inhibition was observed depending on the ion concentration in the medium. Additionally, released ions suppressed Streptococcus mutans adhesion to hydroxyapatite, S. oralis neuraminidase activity, and Porphyromonas gingivalis hemagglutination and gingipain activity in a concentration-dependent manner. From these results, it was suggested that the ions released from the S-PRG filler may suppress the growth and pathogenicity of the oral bacterial flora. This bioactive material is potentially useful to prevent the onset of diseases inside and outside of the oral cavity, which in turn may have possible applications for oral care and QOL improvement.

Abstract
Background:Mac-2 binding protein is a cell-adhesive glycoprotein of the extracellular matrix secreted as a ligand of galectin-3 (Mac-2). Recently, a Wisteria floribunda agglutinin positive-M2BP (M2BP) assay developed using a lectin-antibody sandwich immunoassay has shown promise as a new fibrotic marker in liver fibrosis and interstitial lung disease (ILD) to detect unique fibrosis-related glycoalteration.Objectives:The aim of this study is to evaluate the utility of serum Mac-2 binding protein glycosylation isomer (M2BPGi) levels in patients with rheumatic diseases (RD).Methods:We retrospectively measured serum M2BPGi levels in 68 patients with RD and 16 healthy controls (HC). There were no patients of cirrhosis and active hepatitis. Serum levels of M2BPGi were measured using HISCL M2BP glycosylation isomer Assay Kit. We examined the relationship between serum M2BPGi levels and clinical parameters in patients with RD.Results:In patients with RD, the median age was 62.0 years and 79.4% of them were female.Serum M2BPGi levels were significantly higher in patients with RD than in HC (median 0.98 cutoff index [COI], 0.32 COI, respectively; P < 0.00001). Patients with SLE tended to have higher serum M2BPGi levels than other rheumatic diseases.In patients with RD, a significant correlation was not found between serum M2BP levels and inflammation markers such as CRP or ferritin. However, serum M2BPGi levels were significantly correlated with B cell activation markers such as immunoglobulin free light chain and IgG (r = 0.588, 0.504) and T cell activation marker such as sIL-2R (r = 0.408).Conclusion:Most of the rheumatic diseases in this study were considered to be type I interferonopathy diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren’s syndrome, inflammatory myositis, scleroderma and SLE.Serum M2BPGi was reported to have a significant correlation with SLE disease activity [SS Ahn et al. Lupus. 2018; 27: 771], and also to have a significant correlation with Gakectin-9, a novel biomarker for IFN signiture [Lucas L van den Hoogen et al. Abstract
BACKGROUND The accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) can impact cellular homoeostasis and protein structure, thus is implicated in numerous skin conditions including yellow, dull appearance. AGE formation is irreversible; thus, understanding of the recycling process of AGEs in the skin is critical for addressing skin appearance conditions. OBJECTIVE To determine whether (i) accumulation of AGEs occurs in dull appearance group among young population (age 20-29) (ii) in vitro autophagy stimulation results in reduction of AGEs in keratinocytes. METHODS Facial cheek biopsies were collected from Chinese women (age 20-50) exhibiting either dull or non-dull appearing skin. Histological assessment of glycation was performed for representative subjects among the 20-29 years sub-group by immunofluorescence staining of AGEs. LC-MS methods and keratinocyte cell culture were used to assess impact of autophagy modulators and skin care materials on carboxymethyl lysine (CML) amount, a representative AGE. RESULTS Notable amounts of AGEs were observed in the epidermal samples among young females. Interestingly, the amount of AGEs was significantly higher among the dull skin appearance group. Treatment of keratinocytes with glyceraldehyde (GLA) enhanced CML in the cells, and postglycation treatment with autophagy activators reduced CML. Two skin care materials, Nymphaea alba flower extract (a.k.a. white water lily extract) and sucrose dilaurate, were identified based from in vitro autophagy activation and found to reduce CML in keratinocytes. CONCLUSION We found AGEs accumulate in the facial epidermis even among young people, correlating to a yellow and dull appearance. We also demonstrated in vitro activation of autophagy can reduce AGEs in keratinocytes, and autophagy activating skin care materials, N. alba flower extract and sucrose dilaurate, also reduce AGEs in the keratinocyte in vitro model. These data suggest epidermal AGEs contribute to the dull skin appearance, and autophagy activators may provide an effective solution to improve dull appearance by removing and recycling the accumulated glycation in the skin.

Abstract
Streptococcus pneumoniae causes pneumonia by infecting the alveolar epithelium via binding to host receptors, such as the platelet-activating factor receptor (PAFR). Although chronic periodontitis has been identified as a pneumonia risk factor, how periodontopathic bacteria cause pneumonia is not known. We found that S. pneumoniae adhered to PAFR expressed on A549 human alveolar epithelial cells stimulated by Porphyromonas gingivalis culture supernatant, and this was abrogated by a PAFR-specific inhibitor. Among the major virulence factors of P. gingivalis [lipopolysaccharide (LPS), fimbriae and gingipains (Rgps and Kgp)], PAFR expression and pneumococcal adhesion were executed in an Rgp-dependent manner. LPS and fimbriae did not induce PAFR expression. Hence, our findings suggest that P. gingivalis enhances pneumococcal adhesion to human alveoli by inducing PAFR expression and that gingipains are responsible for this.

Abstract
Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) is generally an opportunistic oral pathogen that adheres to mammalian mucosal sites, triggering a host inflammatory response. In general, Fn is normally found within the human oral cavity; however, it was previously reported that Fn is a risk factor for certain respiratory diseases. Surprisingly, this was never fully elucidated. Here, we investigated the virulence potential of heat-killed Fn on primary human tracheal, bronchial, and alveolar epithelial cells. In this study, we measured the secretion of inflammatory- (IL-8 and IL-6), stress- (total heme and hydrogen peroxide), and cell death-related (caspase-1 and caspase-3) signals. We established that the inflammatory response mechanism varies in each epithelial cell type: (1) along tracheal cells, possible Fn adherence would trigger increased heme secretion and regulated inflammatory response; (2) along bronchial cells, potential Fn adherence would simultaneously initiate an increase in secreted H2O2 and inflammatory response (ascribable to decreased secreted heme amounts); and (3) along alveolar cells, putative Fn adherence would instigate the increased secretion of inflammatory responses attributable to a decrease in secreted heme levels. Moreover, regardless of the epithelial cell-specific inflammatory mechanism, we believe these are putative, not harmful. Taken together, we propose that any potential Fn-driven inflammation along the respiratory tract would be initiated by differing epithelial cell-specific inflammatory mechanisms that are collectively dependent on secreted heme.

Abstract
Background:IL-6 contributes significantly to the chronic inflammatory process of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Sarilumab (SRL), a human anti-human IL-6 receptor alpha monoclonal antibody that blocks the signaling originated by the IL-6/IL-6R complex like tocilizumab,is an effective treatment. However, predictors of the response to sarilumab are still required.Objectives:We aimed to combine IL-6, soluble IL-6R (sIL-6R) and gp130 (sgp130) levels to identify groups of sarilumab responses.Methods:This research is a retrospective study. a total of 32 RA patients with SRL therapy in our department from February 1 in 2018 to December 31 in 2019 were included. Serum and clinical data from 32 RA patients were collected before treatment and until the last visit. Follow-up period was up to one year after starting SRL treatment. Serum were tested for IL-6 (Human IL-6 Quantikine ELISA Kit, R&D systems), sIL-6R (Human soluble IL-6R alpha Quantikine ELISA Kit, R&D systems) and sgp130 (Human soluble gp130 Quantikine ELISA Kit, R&D systems), using specific ELISAs according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Hierarchical cluster analysis (JMP14.3.0) was used to establish the relationship between IL-6, sIL-6R and sgp130. We evaluated the efficacy of SRL treatment on the last visit using European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) response criteria in the groups of patients. The other statistical analyses were performed with EZR 1.41, and p Values less than 0.05 were considered significant.Results:The median age of patients was 70.5 (IQR: 66.5-74.3) years and the median of disease duration was 7.3 (1.7-15.3) years. Nine (28.1%) patients were biologics and Jakinibs naive. the median follow-up periods were 24 (12-26) weeks. The baseline DAS28 was median 4.39 (3.77 - 5.43), and CDAI was 21.1 (11.7-29.5). When comparing responders and non-responders, there were no significant differences in any of the baseline parameters and cytokines. Four statistical significant clusters of RA patients (i.e., Group1, Group2, Group3 and tocilizumab use group before SRL) were defined by serum concentrations of IL-6, sIL-6R and spg130 at baseline. The levels of IL-6 expressed as median in Group1 patients were 25.6 (14.4–72.2) pg/ml, in Group2 5.9 (3.3–11.3) pg/ml, and in Group3 70.2 (45.4–86.1) pg/ml (p < 0.002, significant difference only between Group2 and Group3). The levels of sIL-6R expressed as median in Group1 patients were 38.7 (34.7-45.1) ng/ml, in Group2 35.1 (24.8-41.9) ng/ml, and in Group3 35.7 (34.2-39.8) ng/ml (p = 0.5477). The levels of sgp130 expressed as median in Group1 patients were 272.6 (263.0-277.2) ng/ml, in Group2 223.1 (221.0-228.0) ng/ml, and in Group3 204.6 (192.0-207.6) ng/ml (p < 0.00003, significant difference between the three groups respectively). There were no significant differences in any of the baseline clinical features and laboratory findings between the three groups. Out of the 8 patients in Group1 had a good or moderate response to SRL. Conversely, the percentage of patients with no response to SRL was higher in Group3 than in Group1 and Group2.Conclusion:RA patients could be easily stratified prior to the rapeutic intervention with sgp130 related to the IL-6 signal reguration. Abstract
A new RIKEN 28-GHz superconducting electron cyclotron resonance ion source (SC-ECRIS) has been installed for the superconducting RIKEN linear accelerator (SRILAC). The new SC-ECRIS control system mainly consists of programmable logic controllers (PLCs) embedded with the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System. To improve the reliability as compared with previous control systems, two types of PLC central processing units, sequential and Linux, have been installed in the same unit. Past experience has shown that new types of designs that can rapidly respond to system scalability are key. By connecting PLC stations using star-topology field buses, their rapid and cost-effective response to system changes is realized for the new devices. Furthermore, a unique data acquisition system employing a 920-MHz-band radio was developed to measure analog data such as the temperature at the high-voltage stage.

Abstract
Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is widely used as an antimicrobial irrigant; however, it has cytotoxic and neurotoxic effects. For these reasons, development of new, safe irrigants other than NaOCl is long overdue. In the present study, the antimicrobial and noxious effects of acid-electrolyzed functional water (FW) were evaluated and compared with those of NaOCl. Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus mutans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, or Candida albicans were mixed with each tested solution for 30 s. The mixtures were then plated on brain-heart infusion agar plates, after which colony numbers were counted. Serially diluted acid FW was used to determine the actual chloride concentration (ACC) required for a bactericidal effect. Noxious effects were evaluated by measuring lactate dehydrogenase released from HeLa cells. Acid FW and NaOCl had similar bactericidal effects against all bacterial species but not against C. albicans. An ACC of at least 10 ppm was required in order to ensure effective bacteriocidal activity and induce significant lactate dehydrogenase release. Acid FW-treated HeLa cells exhibited healthy growth, with slight retardation as compared with non-treated cells. Because of its efficient bactericidal, and less noxious, effects on human cells, acid FW may be a useful irrigant for effective root canal treatment.

Abstract
Oral diseases generally have certain bacteria associated with them. Non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma (NTAP), generated at atmospheric pressure and room temperature, incorporates several molecules, including reactive oxygen species, that can inactivate various bacteria including oral pathogens. For this reason, several NTAP devices have been developed to treat oral diseases. Use of noble gases can enhance the bactericidal efficacy of NTAP, but this requires additional gas supply equipment. Therefore, a new NTAP device that employs ambient air as the working gas was developed. The device generates non-thermal atmospheric pressure air plasma. Here, the singlet oxygen (1O2) levels generated, their bactericidal effects on oral pathogens (Streptococcus mutans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Enterococcus faecalis), and the bacterial oxidative stress they imposed were measured. 1O2 generation in phosphatebuffered saline was assessed qualitatively using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy, and bactericidal efficacy was evaluated by counting of colony-forming units/mL. Bacterial oxidative stress was determined by measurement of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. ESR indicated that the level of 1O2 increased significantly and time-dependently, and was inversely correlated with distance, but the bactericidal effects were correlated only with treatment time (not distance) as H2O2 increased and SOD levels decreased, suggesting that the new device has potential applicability for treatment of oral disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS The most prevalent infectious disease, chronic periodontitis which leads to alveolar bone destruction and subsequent tooth loss, develops due to proinflammatory cytokine production induced by periodontopathic bacteria. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a non-infectious disease, is the third leading cause of death globally. This condition exacerbates frequently, and which is attributable to proinflammatory cytokine production induced by infection by respiratory microorganisms such as Streptococcus pneumoniae. Although a positive association has recently been revealed between chronic periodontitis and COPD, how periodontitis contributes to the pathogenesis of COPD remains unclear. Therefore, we hypothesized that some periodontopathic bacteria are involved in the exacerbation of COPD through the induction of proinflammatory cytokine production by respiratory epithelial cells. In this connection, COPD develops in the airways; however, because most periodontopathic bacteria are anaerobic, they are unlikely to exhibit stable virulence in the lower respiratory organs in humans. Hence, we aimed to elucidate whether exposure to heat-inactivated periodontopathic bacteria induces proinflammatory cytokine production by several human respiratory epithelial cell lines and in the lower respiratory organs and serum in mice. METHODS Real-time polymerase chain reaction and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were used to investigate in vitro induction by heat-inactivated periodontopathic bacteria and S. pneumoniae for mRNA expression and protein production of interleukin (IL)-8 and IL-6 by human respiratory epithelial cell lines. ELISA was also used to determine in vivo induction of cytokine production in the lower respiratory organs and serum of intratracheally heat-inactivated Fusobacterium nucleatum-inoculated mice. RESULTS Some, but not all, periodontopathic bacteria, especially F. nucleatum, strongly induced IL-8 and IL-6 production by BEAS-2B bronchial epithelial cells. In addition, F. nucleatum induced IL-8 production by A549 alveolar epithelial cells as well as IL-8 and IL-6 production by Detroit 562 pharyngeal epithelial cells. Furthermore, F. nucleatum induced considerably higher cytokine production than S. pneumoniae. This was also observed in the entire lower respiratory organs and serum in mice. CONCLUSION Exposure to increased number of F. nucleatum potentially induces proinflammatory cytokine production by human bronchial and pharyngeal epithelial cells, which may trigger exacerbation of COPD.

Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver tumour in dogs. However, the clinical features and risk factors of HCC have not been confirmed. The objective of this study was to investigate the clinical features and risk factors for canine HCC. Medical records of 44 dogs diagnosed with HCC at Hokkaido University Veterinary Teaching Hospital between 2013 and 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. All dogs evaluated at the teaching hospital during the study period were used as the reference population for breed, age, sex predispositions or possible related factors for HCC, including concurrent disorders. Clinical characteristics of HCC were determined using propensity score matching analysis. The prevalence of HCC diagnosis was 0.96%. Multivariate analysis revealed that dogs diagnosed with HCC were significantly older (odds ratio [OR], 1.20; 95% confidence intervals [CI], 1.07-1.33) than the reference population. Welsh Corgis (OR, 3.68; 95% CI, 1.56-8.67) and Beagles (OR, 4.33; 95% CI, 1.58-11.90) were significantly predisposed to HCC. Twenty-seven of 44 dogs with HCC had at least one concurrent disorder. The most common concurrent disorder was hyperadrenocorticism (n = 10), and the adjusted odds of hyperadrenocorticism in dogs with HCC were 4.13 higher than those of the reference population (95% CI, 1.95-8.76). Propensity score matching analysis revealed that thrombocytosis (n = 30/43), increased alanine aminotransferase (n = 41/44), increased alkaline phosphatase (n = 42/44), and hypercalcemia (n = 13/32) were significantly associated with HCC diagnosis. The results of this study suggest that Welsh Corgis and Beagles are breeds with a predisposition for HCC and that hyperadrenocorticism might be a potential risk factor.

Abstract
Interparticle interactions are self-conflicting rather than cooperative on particular lattices. When such geometrical frustration occurs, charge ordering (CO) can be destabilized into non-trivial charge states such as the recently observed charge glass (CG). A more extreme case is the frustration-induced quantum melting of the CO that has been theoretically proposed. Here, we report d.c. charge transport and noise spectroscopy measurements for a triangular-lattice organic conductor situated close to the CO or CG. Our experiments demonstrate that these materials can host a strange metal with unusual charge dynamics, which we attribute to frustration-induced fluctuations of the CO or CG. Our results also show that the anomalous charge fluctuations can freeze into an insulating state when uniaxial stress is applied, which reduces the geometrical frustration. The present observations suggest the existence of the frustration-induced quantum melting of charges analogous to spin liquids.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitrification is widely used for assisted reproductive technology (ART). Most vitrification devices require the skillful placement of embryos into the carrier and aspiration of excessive vitrification solution. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the Cryoroom as a vitrification device. MATERIALS AND METHODS Mouse and human embryos were vitrified with Cryoroom or Cryotop, and the developmental potency was assessed in vitro. Mouse monozygotic twin blastocysts were vitrified with Cryoroom or Cryotop for microarray analysis. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION In mouse and human embryos, there were no differences between the survival and developmental progress in each device. In silico, the Cryoroom device showed no changes, particularly in DNA methylation after vitrification compared with the Cryotop. These results showed that the form and function of the device may affect the gene expression levels in vitrified embryos. CONCLUSION The Cryoroom represents a safe and potentially revolutionary vitrification device for ART.

Abstract
Candida albicans causes opportunistic fungal infections usually hidden among more dominant bacteria and does not exhibit high pathogenicity in vivo. Among the elderly, due to reduced host resistance to pathogens attributable to immunoscenesence, oral candidiasis is more likely to develop often leading to systemic candidiasis. Surface pre-reacted glass ionomer filler (S-PRG filler) is an ion-releasing functional bioactive glass that can release and recharge six ions which in turn strengthens tooth structure, inhibits demineralization arising from dental caries, and suppresses dental plaque accumulation. However, its effects on C. albicans have never been elucidated. Here, we evaluated the effects of ion released from S-PRG filler on C. albicans. Results show that extraction liquids containing released ions (ELIS) decreased the amount of hydrogen peroxide and catalase activity in C. albicans. Moreover, ELIS presence was found to affect C. albicans: (1) suppression of fungal growth and biofilm formation, (2) prevent adherence to denture base resin, (3) inhibit dimorphism conversion, and (4) hinder the capability to produce secreted aspartyl proteinase. Taken together, our findings suggest that ELIS induces oxidative stress in C. albicans and suppresses its growth and pathogenicity. In this regard, we propose that ELIS has the potential to be clinically used to help prevent the onset and inhibition of oral candidiasis among the elderly population.

By an easy-to-use, company-wide information network system, over 1,000 medical representatives in more than 80 offices throughout Japan can retrieve information. Information derived from the system is displayed on the terminal and the original documents are automatically output through a facsimile.

Abstract
AbstractObjectives: In Japan controversy exists as to whether or not the risk factors for ischemic heart disease (IHD) are the same as in western countries. We conducted a case-control study on IHD to clarify the risk factors in males in an urban area of Japan using our automated multiphasic health testing and services (AMHTS) system. Method: Cases were the clients who took the health check-up between January 1987 and July 1994 and had onset of IHD after the check-up. For each case five clients were selected as controls by conditional matching. The check-up data were compared between cases and controls 11 years, 6 years and just before the onset of the heart diseases. Results: The statistically significant items were as follows: (1) Eleven years before the onset: Total cholesterol (T-Chol) for myocardial infarction (MI), and fasting blood sugar (FBS) for angina pectoris (AP). (2) Six years before the onset: T-Chol, electrocardiographic (ECG) findings and the complaint of palpitation or breathlessness for MI, and FBS and palpitation or breathlessness for AP. (3) Just before the onset: T-Chol, the complaint of chest pain, FBS, smoking index and hypertensive status for MI and palpitation or breathlessness, ECG findings, chest pain, systolic blood pressure and erythrocyte sedimentation rate at 60 minutes for AP. In conclusion, the risk factors for MI in males in an urban area of Japan are the same as in western countries. The most significant risk factor for AP in males in an urban area of Japan is fasting blood sugar.

Abstract
AbstractA previous report was concerned with the evaluation of quality of life using a Health Promotion System for the Elderly. In the present report, we describe one part of that system: a subjective symptoms acquisition and reporting system.The main purpose of this system is to permit any physician or nurse to uniformly employ questionnaires to acquire accurate subjective symptoms. This system is applied in three steps. First, the subjective answers to 21 questions displayed on a personal computer are obtained. These answers correspond to the basic subjective symptoms. Second, if a basic subjective symptom is “positive”, more detailed questions are automatically generated. Finally, clear sentences regarding subjective symptoms are generated and output as a “finding report”.This information is helpful to physicians and nurses in their health-counseling work. An artificial intelligence (AI) program based on “XpertRule” produces detailed questions which are generated by an interactive questionnaire using branching logical rules.

Abstract
We assessed the diagnostic value of circulating VEGF as a tumor marker in patients with lung cancer and compared its clinical utility with that of other markers such as carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and cytokeratin 19 (CYFRA). One hundred and sixty non-small cell lung cancer patients and 70 healthy volunteers were included in the study. Circulating VEGF was assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The serum concentrations of both CEA and CYFRA were measured by means of immunoradiometric assays. The diagnostic value of plasma VEGF (VEGFp) was better than that of CYFRA and similar to that of CEA. When the diagnostic value of VEGFp and CEA for the diagnosis of adenocarcinoma was compared, the two markers proved to have nearly equal discriminatory power. In diagnosing squamous cell carcinoma, VEGFp showed less discrimination than CYFRA. When the diagnostic value of VEGFp was analyzed for stage I adenocarcinoma patients, VEGFp was slightly more discriminatory than CEA. The combination assay of VEGFp and CEA had a sensitivity of 75% and a specificity of 60% at a cutoff of 104.4 pg/mL for VEGFp and 5.2 ng/mL for CEA. The combination of VEGF and CEA was superior to CEA alone in the early diagnosis of adenocarcinoma of the lung.

Abstract
The effects of bittern water (BW), obtained from the ocean floor, on cariogenic bacteria and saliva secretion were examined. Streptococcus mutans was mixed with BW for 1, 3, 5, 10, and 20 min to explore the bactericidal effects of BW against cariogenic bacteria. Bacterial viability was calculated by counting the number of colony-forming units on Brain Heart Infusion agar plates. The results indicated a bacterial viability of more than 35% even after 20 min of incubation. Subsequently, the effects of BW on saliva secretion and the salivary concentration of secretory IgA (sIgA) were examined. Gargling with BW significantly augmented saliva secretion. Although the sIgA concentration was reduced, the total sIgA secreted into saliva was increased significantly. Our findings indicate that the use of BW may be a new strategy for the treatment of various oral diseases, including dry mouth.
