Abstract
Molecular techniques are an alternative for the diagnosis of strongyloidiasis, produced by Strongyloides stercoralis. However, it is necessary to determine the best amplification target for the populations of this parasite present in a geographical area and standardize a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) protocol for its detection. The objectives of this work were the comparison of different PCR targets for molecular detection of S. stercoralis and the standardization of a PCR protocol for the selected target with the best diagnostic results. DNA extraction was performed from parasite larvae by saline precipitation. Three amplification targets of the genes encoding ribosomal RNA 18S (18S rDNA) and 5.8S (5.8S rDNA) and cytochrome oxidase 1 (COX1) of S. stercoralis were compared, and the PCR reaction conditions for the best target were standardized (concentration of reagents and template DNA, hybridization temperature, and number of cycles). The analytical sensitivity and specificity of the technique were determined. DNA extraction by saline precipitation made it possible to obtain DNA of high purity and integrity. The ideal target was the 5.8S rDNA, since the 18S rDNA yielded non-reproducible results and COX1 never amplified under any condition tested. The optimal conditions for the 5.8S rDNA-PCR were: 1.5 mM MgCl2, 100 μM dNTPs, 0.4 μM primers, and 0.75 U DNA polymerase, using 35 cycles and a hybridization temperature of 60 °C. The analytical sensitivity of the PCR was 1 attogram of DNA, and the specificity was 100%. Consequently, the 5.8S rDNA was shown to be highly sensitive and specific for the detection of S. stercoralis DNA.

Abstract
Lumbosacral orientation in the sagittal plane is of utmost importance, as it plays a critical role in the function of the spine and the hip joints. Equilibrium of the trunk influences the tridimensional orientation of the acetabulum and the functional range of motion of the hips. Each patient is characterized by a “morphological” parameter named incidence angle; its sagittal balance is the consequence of a postural adaptation for other functional parameters (pelvic tilt, sacral slope, lumbar lordosis, acetabular sagittal tilt, functional anteversion). Understanding variations of the sacral slope on lateral pelvic X-rays is essential for planning total hip arthroplasty and identifying patients at risk of impingement, as lumbosacral posture influences functional anteversion of the acetabulum. Posterior pelvic version as in sitting position (sacral slope decrease) is linked to the increase of the functional acetabular anteversion. Anterior pelvic version as in standing position (sacral slope increase) is linked to the decrease of the functional acetabular anteversion.

Abstract
<p>This is Part II of a two-part review about climate and climate variability focused on the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP) and the Caribbean Sea (CS). Both parts are aimed at providing oceanographers, marine biologists, and other ocean scientists, a guiding base for ocean-atmosphere interaction processes affecting the CS, the ETP, and the waters of Isla del Coco. Isla del Coco National Park is a Costa Rican World Heritage site. Part I analyzed the mean fields for both basins and a larger region covering 25º S - 35º N, 20º W - 130º W. Here we focus on a smaller area (65º W - 95º W, 0º - 20º N), as a complement to Part 1. Incoming solar radiation and surface energy fluxes reveal the complex nature of the ETP and CS for convective activity and precipitation on seasonal and intraseasonal time scales. Both regions are relevant as sources of evaporation and the associated moisture transport processes. The American Monsoon System influences the climate and climate variability of the ETP and CS, however, the precise way systems affect regional precipitation and transport of moisture, within the Intra Americas Sea (IAS) are not clear. Although the Caribbean Low-Level Jet (CLLJ) is known to act as a conveyor belt for moisture transport, intraseasonal and seasonal modes of the CLLJ and their interactions with other IAS systems, have to be further investigated. Trans-isthmic jets, exert a variable seasonal wind stress force over the ocean surface co-generating regions of great marine productivity. Isolated convection, the seasonal migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, the hurricane season, the Mid-Summer Drought, the seasonal and intraseasonal behavior of low-level jets and their interactions with transients, and the southward incursion of cold fronts contribute to regional seasonal precipitation. Many large-scale systems, such as El Niño-Southern Oscillation, the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO, also influence the variability of precipitation by modulating regional features associated with convection and precipitation. Monthly tropical storm (TS) activity in the CS and ETP basins is restricted to the period May-November, with very few cases in December. The CS presents TS peak activity during August, as well as for the number of hurricanes and major hurricanes, in contrast to the ETP that shows the same features during September.</p><div> </div>

Abstract
<p>The tropics are characterized by a variety of atmospheric and oceanic systems dominated by multi-scale interaction processes. This is Part I of a two-part review study on climate and climate variability of the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP). Here, the mean fields of incoming short wave radiation, surface energy fluxes, sea surface temperature, sea level pressure, salinity, wind patterns at 10m height, wind stress curl, precipitation, and evaporation are analyzed and synthetized using available data including that from the last decade. Given the strong interaction between the ETP and Caribbean Sea-Atlantic Ocean, mean field discussions are presented for two different domains, a relatively large domain from 24° S - 36° N and between 129° W - 17° W, and a smaller domain embedding only the Caribbean Sea and the easternmost part of the ETP. Most results on the climate of these two regions can be used as the base line for climate change studies. Interannual variability of tropical cyclones is also investigated over the domain of the latter two basins in the smaller domain. The study is complemented with a short review of some low frequency modes, such as, El Niño-Southern Oscillation, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and the Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation. Such low-frequency modes are known to modulate regional systems, including tropical cyclone frequency.</p><div> </div>

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an increasingly recognized health problem. Various treatment strategies such as thiazolidinediones, metformin, lipid-lowering agents and antioxidants have been evaluated. So far, no single intervention has convincingly improved liver histology. Experience of using silymarin alone or in combination with other agents in patients with NAFLD is limited in the medical literature. The present study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of silymarin plus vitamin E in the treatment of NAFLD. PATIENTS AND METHODS A sample of 36 patients was enrolled. The diagnosis of NAFLD was confirmed by percutaneous liver biopsy. All patients were randomized to one of the following intervention groups: group I: treated with 2 tablets per day of silymarin plus vitamin E (Eurosil 85®, MEDAS SL) and a lifestyle modification program consisting of hypocaloric diet (1520 kcal, 52% of carbohydrates, 25% of lipids and 23% of proteins) and exercise for 3 months and group II (only with the hypocaloric diet). Anthropometric variables as waist circumference, weight, body mass index (BMI) were measured. Biochemical parameters: Glucose, triglycerides, AST, ALT, GGt levels and insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were determined under fasting conditions. Non-invasive NAFLD-index were applied before and after the treatments: Fatty liver index (FLI), liver accumulation product (LAP) and NAFLD-Fibrosis score (FS). RESULTS The mean age was 47.4 ± 11.2 years old (range 18-67); 22 men and 14 women. In group I, 11 patients (61%) have a NAS-score > 5 and 10 (55.5%) in the group II (NS). Anthropometric parameters decreased after treatment in both groups. Patients in both groups showed a decrease in GGt levels after treatment (group I: 68 IU/L vs. 46.2 ± 27 IU/L; p < 0.05 and group II 80.5 ± 46 IU/L vs. 50.3 ± 27 IU/L; p < 0.05). Only in group II we observed a significant decrease in AST and ALT levels. In both groups, we observed a decrease in: FLI index (group I: 86.2 ± 19 vs. 76.9 + 20; p < 0.05 and in group II: 85.2 ± 18 vs. 77.5 ± 23; p < 0.05), and NAFLD-FS index (group I: -1.6 ± 1.8 vs. -2.1 ± 1.5; p < 0.05 and in group II -1 ± 1.9 vs. -1.5 ± 2.1; p < 0.05). Patients in group I who did not get a 5% loss of weight also displayed decreased GGt levels, and in the FLI and NAFLD-FS indexes; whereas patients in group II without decrease of 5% by weight showed no improvement in any of the analyzed parameters. CONCLUSIONS Treatment with silymarin plus vitamin E and a hypocaloric diet ameliorate function hepatic test, and non-invasive NAFLD index. Silymarin can be an alternative valid therapeutic option particularly when other drugs are not indicated or have failed or as a complementary treatment associated with other therapeutic programs.

Abstract
The EPIICAL (Early-treated Perinatally HIV-infected Individuals: Improving Children's Actual Life with Novel Immunotherapeutic Strategies) project arises from the firm belief that perinatally infected children treated with suppressive antiretroviral therapy (ART) from early infancy represent the optimal population model in which to study novel immunotherapeutic strategies aimed at achieving ART-free remission. This is because HIV-infected infants treated within 2-3 months of life have a much reduced viral reservoir size, and rarely show HIV-specific immunity but preserve normal immune development. The goal of EPIICAL is the establishment of an international collaboration to develop a predictive platform using this model to select promising HIV therapeutic vaccine candidates, leading to prioritisation or deprioritisation of novel immunotherapeutic strategies. To establish this platform, the EPIICAL Consortium aims to: develop predictive models of virological and immunological dynamics associated with response to early ART and to treatment interruption using available data from existing cohorts/studies of early-treated perinatally HIV-infected children; optimise methodologies to better characterise immunological, virological and genomic correlates/profiles associated with viral control; test novel immunotherapeutic strategies using in vivo proof-of-concept (PoC) studies with the aim of inducing virological, immunological and transcriptomic correlates/profiles equivalent to those defined by the predictive model. This approach will strengthen the capacity for discovery, development and initial testing of new therapeutic vaccine strategies through the integrated efforts of leading international scientific groups, with the aim of improving the health of HIV-infected individuals.

Abstract
Low-affinity immunoglobulin (Ig)G with potential autoreactivity to lymphocytes and hypergammaglobulinaemia have been described previously in HIV-1-infected patients. Whether such antibodies increase after challenging the immune system, for example with an immunization, is not known. In the present study, the modulation of antibodies with low affinity and potential autoreactivity was evaluated after 2012-13 seasonal flu vaccination with a simple empirical laboratory test measuring the titres of anti-lymphocyte antibodies (ALA) in two different models of secondary immunodeficiency: HIV-1 vertically infected patients (HIV) and patients treated with immunosuppressive therapies after kidney transplantation (KT) compared to healthy individuals (HC). In parallel, the activation status of B cells and their degree of immune senescence was evaluated by measuring the B cell interleukin (IL)-21R expression/plasma IL-21 levels and the frequencies of mature-activated (MA) and double-negative (DN) B cells. A significant increase of ALA titres was observed after vaccination in HIV and KT but not in HC, and this correlated directly with the frequencies of both MA and DN and inversely with the B cell IL-21R expression. This suggests that the quality of an immune response triggered by flu vaccination in HIV and KT may depend upon the activation status of B cells and on their degree of immune senescence. Further investigations are needed to verify whether high frequencies of MA and DN may also relate to increase autoimmunity after immunization in high-risk populations.

Abstract
Subjects Twenty vertically HIV-infected children, 6–16 years of age, with stable viral load control and CD4+ values above 400 cells/mm3. Intervention Ten subjects continued their ongoing antiretroviral treatment (ART, Group A) and 10 were immunized with a HIV-DNA vaccine in addition to their previous therapy (ART and vaccine, Group B). The genetic vaccine represented HIV-1 subtypes A, B and C, encoded Env, Rev, Gag and RT and had no additional adjuvant. Immunizations took place at weeks 0, 4 and 12, with a boosting dose at week 36. Monitoring was performed until week 60 and extended to week 96. Results Safety data showed good tolerance of the vaccine. Adherence to ART remained high and persistent during the study and did not differ significantly between controls and vaccinees. Neither group experienced either virological failure or a decline of CD4+ counts from baseline. Higher HIV-specific cellular immune responses were noted transiently to Gag but not to other components of the vaccine. Lymphoproliferative responses to a virion antigen HIV-1 MN were higher in the vaccinees than in the controls (p = 0.047), whereas differences in reactivity to clade-specific Gag p24, RT or Env did not reach significance. Compared to baseline, the percentage of HIV-specific CD8+ lymphocytes releasing perforin in the Group B was higher after the vaccination schedule had been completed (p = 0.031). No increased CD8+ perforin levels were observed in control Group A. Conclusions The present study demonstrates the feasibility, safety and moderate immunogenicity of genetic vaccination in vertically HIV-infected children, paving the way for amplified immunotherapeutic approaches in the pediatric population. Abstract
The impact of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) supplementation on weight change remains controversial. The objective of this study was to summarize the effects of 25[OH]D supplementation (cholecalciferol or ergocalciferol) on BMI change through a meta-analysis of published clinical trials. We completed a systematic review of English articles, using MEDLINE (Ovid, Pubmed) from January 1, 1998 through January 1, 2013. The articles selected focused on 25[OH]D supplementation and body mass index (BMI) in randomized controlled trials (RCT’s). The association between 25[OH]D and mean BMI change was estimated utilizing a random effects model. A total of 30 studies were reviewed and 9 were included in the meta-analysis. Total participants included 1651 adults (82.6% women and mean age 47.9 years) and mean follow-up ranged between 6 to 196 weeks and mean daily 25[OH]D dose ranged from 200 IU to 1,110 IU. Five of the 9 studies included calcium supplementation in both groups. Average baseline BMI was 30.7 and 30.4 kg/m2 in the intervention and control groups, respectively. Five studies suggested a beneficial effect for 25[OH]D supplementation for BMI change whereas 3 studies showed no effect of 25[OH]D supplementation on BMI change, and one showed a non-perceptible change. Meta-analysis of BMI values at end of trial showed no statistically significant difference in BMI change by use of 25[OH]D supplementation. Based on existing published trials, oral 25[OH]D supplementation does not significantly impact BMI change.

Abstract
Burkitt's Lymphoma (BL) rarely represents the first clinical manifestation of vertical HIV infection in adolescent in Western Europe. We report the case of a 17 year-old boy with two week history of fever and enlarged cervical lymph nodes firstly misdiagnosed as EBV infection, subsequently diagnosed as Burkitt's Lymphoma and vertical HIV infection.

Abstract
Neisseria meningitidis B proteoliposome (AFPL1 when used as adjuvant) and its derivative-Cochleate (AFCo1) contain immunopotentiating and immunomodulating properties and delivery system capacities required for a good adjuvant. Additionally, they contain meningococcal protective antigens and permit packaging of other antigens and pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMP). Consequently, we hypothesized that they would function as good vaccine adjuvants for their own antigens and also for non-related antigens. AFPL1 is a detergent-extracted outer membrane vesicle of N. meningitidis B transformed into AFCo1 in calcium environment. Both are produced at Finlay Institute under good manufacture practices (GMP) conditions. We show their exceptional characteristics: combining in the same structure, the potentiator activity, polarizing agents and delivery system capacities; presenting multimeric protein copies; containing multiprotein composition and multi and synergistic PAMP components; acting with incorporated or co-administrated antigens; inducing type I IFN-gamma and IL-12 cytokines suggesting the stimulation of human plasmocytoid precursor and conventional dendritic cells, respectively, inducing a preferential Th1 immune response with TCD4(+), TCD8(+), cross-presentation and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) in vivo responses; and functioning by parenteral and mucosal routes. AFPL1-AFCo1 protective protein constitutions permit per se their function as a vaccine. In addition to Phase IV Men BC vaccine, AFPL1 has ended the preclinical stage in an allergy vaccine and is concluding the preclinical stage of a nasal meningococcal vaccine. In conclusion, AFPL1 and AFCo1 induced signal 1, 2 and 3 polarizing to a Th1 (including CTL) response when they acted directly as vaccines or were used as adjuvants with incorporated or co-administered antigens by parenteral or mucosal routes. Both are very promising adjuvants.

Abstract
Heparin (a glycosaminoglycan) and quercetin (a calcium-ATPase plasma membrane specific inhibitor) induce bovine sperm capacitation. Mitochondria from frozen semen are capable of generating oxidative energy. The aim of the study was to determine oxygen uptake variation and the participation of diphenileneiodonium (DPI)-sensitive oxidases from spermatozoa capacitated with heparin or quercetin. Oxygen uptake was measured polarographically and 2 microM diphenileneiodonium (DPI) was used as a specific inhibitor of NAD(P)H-oxidases. Sperm capacitation was determined by the chlorotetracycline technique. Heparin produced a respiratory burst (17.0+/-3.2 microL O2/h/10(8) spermatozoa; mean+/-S.D.) versus control (11.3+/-0.9 microL O2/h/10(8) spermatozoa; P<0.05). Oxygen uptake and sperm hypermotility were inhibited by cyanide. Treatment with DPI blocked heparin capacitation and oxygen uptake (cyanide-sensitive) decreased to control levels. Respiration of quercetin-treated samples (cyanide-sensitive; 9.7+/-0.7 microL O2/h/10(8) spermatozoa) was not significantly different from the controls; oxygen uptake was not modified by DPI, but quercetin capacitation was inhibited (P<0.05). The effect of DPI with heparin confirmed that oxidases participate in capacitation induction. The addition of superoxide dismutase and/or catalase to heparin- or quercetin-treated samples, failed to modify oxygen uptake and blocked capacitation (P<0.05), suggesting that the superoxide anion (O2*-) participates in the capacitation induction. High mitochondrial activity from heparin-treated samples indicated that energy requirements, especially for hypermotility, were supported by the respiratory chain. Although a respiratory burst was not produced by quercetin, DPI-sensitive-oxidases (O2*- source) were necessary for capacitation. In cryopreserved bovine spermatozoa, heparin- or quercetin-induced capacitation required different levels of mitochondrial energy and DPI-sensitive oxidase activity.

Abstract
In this paper, we investigated if the differences consistently noted in survival and plantlet production between cryopreserved and non-cryopreserved, control sugarcane embryogenic calluses were related to modifications induced during cryopreservation in the structural and functional integrity of cell membranes. For this, the evolution of electrolyte leakage, lipid peroxidation products and cell membrane protein contents was measured during 5 d after cryopreservation. Differences between control and frozen calluses were observed only during the first 2 (electrolyte leakage) or 3 d (lipid peroxidation products and membrane protein content) after freezing. It was not possible to link these differences with the differences noted in survival and plant production between control and cryopreserved calluses. Additional studies are thus needed to elucidate which biochemical factors, linked to survival and plantlet regeneration, are affected by cryopreservation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of porcine extracorporeal liver perfusion (PECLP) to provide temporary hepatic support for patients in fulminant hepatic failure has been limited by the fact that individual perfusions can be sustained for only a few hours. Inadequate liver function and/or hemodynamic instability are the major contributing factors for early interruption of PECLP. Recent reports suggest that the choice of single (portal vein only) vs dual (portal vein and hepatic artery) vessel perfusion may influence the duration of perfusion. We hypothesize that PECLP with single vessel perfusion (SVP) is associated with worse liver function and greater hemodynamic instability than PECLP with dual vessel perfusion (DVP). MATERIALS AND METHODS To eliminate the potentially confounding influences of liver failure and xenograft rejection, liver isografts procured from White-Landrace pig donors were perfused by either SVP or DVP via an extracorporeal circuit established with normal White-Landrace pig recipients. The function of perfused livers was evaluated by measuring production of bile and Factors V and VIII, clearance of ammonia and lactate, and extraction of O(2) at baseline and at 0, 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 h after initiation of PECLP. The impact of PECLP on recipient hemodynamic status was assessed by monitoring BP, heart rate, urine output, O(2) saturation, etc. Among other parameters evaluated were serum albumin and total protein and hepatic release of IL-1beta and nitric oxide to assess their possible contributions to hemodynamic instability. RESULTS DVP and SVP livers cleared ammonia and lactate similarly. Both approaches were associated with progressive hypoalbuminemia and hypoproteinemia. DVP livers produced more bile and Factor V and were associated with less recipient hypotension and IL-1beta and NO release than SVP livers. CONCLUSIONS Livers with DVP function better than livers with SVP. The duration of PECLP can be limited by recipient hypotension, although this complication is less severe with DVP than with SVP.

Abstract
This paper studies the copper corrosion in simulated uterine fluids in the presence of urea and/or albumin, at pH 5.0, 6.3 and 8.0, with 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20 atmospheres of oxygen pressure and without additional oxygen pressure, at 37 degrees C temperature, and for 1, 3, 7, 15, 21 and 30 days experimentation. The copper dissolution rate was determined using absorbance measurements. Copper dissolution was the highest at pH 8.0 and 0.20 atmospheres of oxygen pressure, 674 microg d(-1) for 1 day and 109 microg d(-1) for 30 days. The presence of albumin, contrary to urea, accelerates copper corrosion.

Abstract
The simultaneous polarographic determination of the ternary mixture of captan-captafol and folpet is studied. The polarographic signals of these compounds in their mixture show a high overlapping. For this reason different chemometric methods such as PLS, PCR and artificial neuronal network (ANN) have been utilized for the simultaneous determination of these compounds in mixtures. The calibration model is built from solutions containing river water of known pesticide concentrations and the signals obtained by Sampled DC and DPP (differential pulse polarography) have been used. The analysis of both synthetic and real samples (river water) has been carried out by PLS with satisfactory results in most cases. It is possible to determine 0.25 ppm of each pesticide in river water samples after a preconcentration step by extraction into diethyl ether. ANN has also been applied to improve the results obtained by the PLS tool when the sampled DC current is recorded or when liquid-solid extraction with C18 cartridges is performed.

Abstract
This paper studies the characterization of corrosion products originated after 1 and 12 weeks' immersion of copper specimens in simulated uterine fluids at pH 6.3 and 8.0 and at 37 degrees C temperature. The experimental techniques used were X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray. The compounds found were calcite (CaCO3), calcium phosphate, cuprite (Cu2O) and copper hydroxide (Cu(OH)2). The morphology of corrosion products was a non-uniform, layer showing some paths through which copper ions can be released. In parallel, corrosion products formed on packaged, unused copper-containing intrauterine devices (IUD) were analyzed. Cuprite (Cu2O) and chalcocite (Cu2S) were the main species identified.

Abstract
Integrin-mediated signals play an important but poorly understood role in regulating many leukocyte functions. In monocytes and monocytic leukemia cells, (β)1 integrin-mediated adhesion results in a strong induction of immediate-early genes that are important in inflammation. To investigate the signaling pathways from integrins in monocytic cells, THP-1 cells were stimulated via (β)1 integrins by binding to fibronectin and by crosslinking the integrins with specific monoclonal antibodies. The involvement of MAPK and PI 3-K on nuclear factor (κ)B (NF-(κ)B) activation was then analyzed. We found that integrins activated both NF-(κ)B and MAPK in a PI 3-K-dependent manner, as wortmannin and LY294002 blocked these responses. However, the specific MEK inhibitor PD98059 did not prevent integrin-mediated NF-(κ)B activation. In contrast, a dominant negative mutant of Rac completely prevented NF-(κ)B activation, but it did not affect MAPK activation. These results indicate that integrin signaling to NF-(κ)B is not mediated by the MAPK pathway, but rather by the small GTPase Rac. In addition, a dominant negative form of Ρ augmented NF-(κ)B activation and blocked MAPK activation, implying that these two pathways are in competition with each other. These data suggest that integrins activate different signaling pathways in monocytic cells. One uses PI 3-K and Rac to activate NF-(κ)B, while the other uses PI 3-K, MEK, and MAPK to activate other nuclear factors, such as Elk-1.

Abstract
We studied the copper corrosion and product layers originating in a simulated uterine solution at pH values 6.3 and 8.0 for 15, 65, 180, and 360 days at 37 degrees C. Absorbance measurements were performed. Corrosion product layers on the copper surface were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray, and x-ray photo-electron spectroscopy techniques. Copper release for pH 6.3 and 8.0 was 3.4-4.5 microg/day for 15 days and 0.1-0.3 microg/day for 360 days. Of the order of 30%-40% of dissolved cupric ions were trapped in the product layers. The main compounds identified were cuprite (Cu(2)O), calcite (CaCO(3)), and phosphates.

Abstract
A hemorrhagic metalloproteinase, named BaH4, was isolated from the venom of the snake Bothrops asper by a combination of ion-exchange chromatography on DEAE-Sepharose and gel filtration on Sephacryl S-200. BaH4 is a 69 kDa protein with a pI of 5.3. It was recognized by antibodies raised against hemorrhagic metalloproteinase BaH1 isolated from B. asper venom, with a reaction of partial immunologic identity. BaH4 shows proteolytic activity on biotinylated casein, hide powder azure and fibrin, although having lower activity than crude B. asper venom and metalloproteinase BaP1 isolated from the same venom. BaH4 hydrolyzed fibronectin, laminin and type IV collagen in vitro, albeit at a relatively high enzyme:substrate ratio. Proteolytic activity was inhibited by chelating agents and 2-mercaptoethanol, but not by soybean trypsin inhibitor. Prominent hemorrhage developed in gastrocnemius and cremaster muscles after administration of BaH4. Moreover, it induced lethality in mice after intravenous injection, with an LD50 of 0.37 microg/g. Histological observations showed conspicuous pulmonary hemorrhage when the enzyme was injected intravenously. BaH4 is a hemorrhagic metalloproteinase which may play a relevant role in local and systemic bleeding characteristic of B. asper envenomations.

Abstract
A kinetic study of the degradation of phosalone in an alkaline medium was undertaken by using a pneumatic stopped-flow system. A rapid semiautomatic method is proposed for determining phosalone. Linear calibration graphs up to 8.0 x 10(-5) M (detection limit = 1.40 x 10(-6) M) were obtained, with a measurement period of only 3.5 s per sample and a relative standard deviation of 1.4%. Several pesticides were assayed as interference species, and several did not interfere even at a 6:1, M:M foreign species/phosalone ratio. A strong interference (ratio < 1) was generated by azinphos-methyl and carbaryl. The proposed method was applied to the analysis of a commercial formulation, and the results were validated by comparison with those for a chromatographic method.

Several amphiphilic glycosyl carbamates, glycosyl thiocarbamates and glycosylthioureas were prepared by addition of the anomeric hydroxyl group of acetylated glycosyl derivatives to alkyl isocyanates, or by reaction of glycosyl isothiocyanates with alcohols or amines. The solubility, critical micelle concentrations and detergent efficiency for the extraction of proteins of these compounds were evaluated and compared.

Abstract
Anterior lumbar spine approaches may be indicated for fusion in degenerative lumbar spine disorders or to fill discal and bone gaps after fracture reduction. We present an anterior extraperitoneal approach applicable to any discal and vertebral levels from T12 to S1. The anatomic study, based on 25 cadavers, highlights retroperitoneal dissection principles for easy kidney and duodenopancreatic mobilisation and direct left anterior access to the entire lumbar spine. We established a precise description of the lumbar veins and the anastomoses between the left renal vein and hemiazygos system, in order to define different topographic and anatomic factors related to safe and easily reproducible approaches for cage or graft implementation. Independent of the level and previous intraperitoneal surgery, lumbar spine access with this approach safeguards the kidney, ureter, spleen, hypogastric plexus and duodenopancreatic system. Regarding operating time, blood-loss and possibilities for freshening and grafting, this technique seems an effective counterbalance to the difficulties and complex technology of endoscopic approaches. The clinical study includes our first 42 cases in traumatic and degenerative lesions. Avoiding the neurologic or hemorrhagic risk inherent in classical posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) techniques, it can be considered as a reasonable and valid alternative. This technique could be used in the near future for mini invasive discal prosthesis insertion.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to evaluate equine sperm membrane integrity using the hypoosmotic swelling (HOS) test and to correlate this test with different sperm parameters in raw and frozen thawed semen. The HOS solutions were made with fructose, sucrose, lactose and sodium citrate each at 300, 150, 100, 50 and 25 mosm. Maximum numbers of swollen spermatozoa were observed in solutions of fructose, sucrose and lactose each at 100, 50 and 25 mosm. Correlations between progressive motility, morphologically normal spermatozoa and the HOS test were r = 0.75 and r = 0.51 in raw semen and r = 0.26 and r = -0.22 in frozen-thawed semen. The correlation between HOS and percentage of intact membranes with the fluorescent stain was r = 0.32 in frozen-thawed semen. The HOS test is a simple and accessible method which could be used as a complement to routine equine semen analysis. It has the added advantages of being less susceptible to the immediate effects of cold shock and of evaluating individual spermatozoa rather than the population as a whole, as does progressive motility.

Abstract
The secretory immune response in saliva from intestinal amoebiasis patients against antigens obtained from Entamoeba histolytica membranes was studied. Western blot analysis indicated that patient saliva contains secretory IgA antibodies against antigens with molecular masses ranging from 170 to 24 kDa, some of which were also recognized by saliva from healthy subjects. However, antigens of 170, 125, 46 and 37 kDa are recognized more frequently (> 90%) by the secretory IgA from patients with intestinal amoebiasis than by that from healthy subjects (< 10%).

Abstract
Anterolateral approach to the lumbar spine using a retroperitoneal approach is a common technique. But conventional approaches are performed laterally, resulting in parietal muscular damage, which may alter functional results. The authors present their experience about a minimized pararectal retroperitoneal approach from T12 to S1. Some anatomical aspects are important for a safe and reproductive procedure. The authors used mainly this technique in association with posterior correction and fixation in traumatic and degenerative pathologies. They point out the simplicity of this technique which is performed without special equipment. It seems a real alternative to laparoscopic techniques and micro-surgical antero-lateral interbody fusion, especially because of minimal potential complications and low post operative morbidity.

Abstract
Surfactants carrying either a hydrocarbon or a fluorocarbon alkyl chain have been synthesized. The polar head was either tris(hydroxymethyl)acrylamidomethane (THAM), telomerized THAM, or a glycosylated THAM moiety. The aqueous solubility of some of these molecules was increased by oxidizing to a sulfoxide the thioether function that associates their hydrophobic and hydrophilic moieties. In all cases, the critical micellar concentration was principally determined by the length and chemical nature of the alkyl chain. The usefulness of these surfactants in handling integral membrane proteins in solution has been examined using as test materials chloroplast thylakoid membranes and the photosynthetic complex cytochrome b6f. In keeping with earlier observations in other systems, none of the fluorinated surfactants was able to solubilize thylakoid membranes. Transfer to a solution of fluorinated surfactant of b6f complexes that had been solubilized and purified in the presence of a classical detergent usually resulted in aggregation and precipitation of the protein, while most homologous molecules with hydrocarbon chains did keep the b6f complex soluble. Two of the fluorinated surfactants, however, proved able to maintain the b6f complex water-soluble, intact, and enzymatically active. Because of their limited affinity for lipid alkyl chains and other hydrocarbon surfaces, fluorinated surfactants appear as potentially interesting tools for the study of membrane proteins that do not stand well exposure to classical detergents.

Abstract
Several phosphoserine, phosphothreonine and phosphotyrosine synthons suitable for the stepwise synthesis of phosphopeptides were prepared. Treatment of methylthiomethyl (MTM) esters of either Z-, Boc-, Allocserine and threonine with phosphochloridate in pyridine followed by MgBr2 cleavage of MTM in diethyl ether afforded the title compounds in good yield. Thiophosphoserine and phosphotyrosine synthons were also obtained by the phosphoramidite method using di-(2,2,2-trichloroethyl)-N,N-diisopropylphosphoramidite and MCPBA as oxidizing reagent. Trichloroethyl proved valuable as phosphate protecting group especially in phosphotyrosine derivatives owing to its stability in acidic conditions. These synthons were involved in the liquid-phase synthesis of several phospho and/or thiophosphopeptides related to either src-protein kinase or rat liver pyruvate kinase.

Abstract
Serum samples from 3336 contacts of leprosy patients were tested for antiphenolic glycolipid I antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with the albumin coupled synthetic disaccharide antigen. The overall positivity rate was 9.3%. No significant differences were seen between a group of household contacts of lepromatous patients and those of the other types of the disease. The proportion of ELISA positives was slightly higher in the relatives as compared to workplace contacts and neighbours but significantly different only between the two former (p less than 0.05). Among those contacts with absorbance values higher than 0.100, 5 new leprosy patients were diagnosed, 2 of them with positive skin smears. A sixth contact was detected with a very high absorbance value in whom no single skin lesion was found but whose lepromin reaction was 0 mm and the skin smear showed a bacteriological index of 3+.

Abstract
Serum samples from 184 lepers are studied by means of solid phase ELISA with the semisynthetic antigen disaccharide-bovine albumin analogous of phenolic glycolipid I of Mycobacterium leprae. Patients are grouped according to the clinical presentation of the disease and course of time elapsed since the institution of therapy. Bacilloscopic examinations were made also in 116 patients who were positive at diagnosis. For serologic testing, absorbance values over 0,160 were considered positive. Results in multibacillary patients showed a gradual and significant decrease both of mean absorbance values and in the seropositive ratio in connection with the length of treatment. It was also found that phenolic anti glycolipid antibodies increased with the value of the bacteriologic index. This system is useful in monitoring the effectiveness of chemotherapy in multibacillary leprosy.
