Upconversion Luminescence Properties of Pr3+-Doped BaYF5 Nanoparticles Prepared by Microwave Hydrothermal Method

Pure and Pr3+-doped BaYF5 nanoparticles were synthesized by the microwave hydrothermal method. The nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and optical spectroscopy. The XRD and TEM confirm that the average size of nanoparticles is in the range of 26-37 nm. The optical excitation and luminescence spectra of BaYF5:Pr3+ nanoparticles are presented in the visible and ultraviolet (UV) range. It has been verified that Pr3+ ions are capable of emitting UV-C photons when excited by a 444 nm laser. This emission arises from a two-photon energy-transfer upconversion mechanism. The concentration dependence of the upconversion luminescence of BaYF5:Pr3+ was studied.

Understanding Yb3+-sensitized photon avalanche in Pr3+ co-doped nanocrystals: modelling and optimization

Among different upconversion processes where the emitted photon has higher energy than the one absorbed, photon avalanche (PA) is unique, because the luminescence intensity increases by 2-3 orders of magnitude in response to a tiny increase in excitation intensity. Since its discovery in 1979, PA has been observed in bulk materials but until recently, obtaining it at the nanoscale has been a significant challenge. In the present work, the PA phenomenon in β-NaYF4 colloidal nanocrystals co-doped with Pr3+ and Yb3+ ions was successfully observed at 482 nm (3P0 → 3H4) and 607 nm (3P0 → 3H6) under excitation at 852 nm. The impact of Pr3+ ion concentration and pump power dependence on PA behavior was investigated, i.e. PA non-linearity slopes of luminescence intensity curves as a function of pump power density as well as PA thresholds. The highest slopes, namely 8.6 and 9.0, and the smallest thresholds equal to 286 kW cm-2 and 281 kW cm-2, observed for emission bands at 607 nm and 482 nm, respectively, were obtained for NaYF4:0.5%Pr3+,15%Yb3+@NaYF4 colloidal nanocrystals. Besides experimental research, simulations of PA behavior in Pr3+, Yb3+ co-doped materials were performed based on differential rate equations describing the phenomena that contribute to the existence of PA. The influence of different processes leading to PA, e.g. the rates of nonradiative and radiative transitions as well as energy transfers, on PA performance was simulated aiming to understand their roles in this complex sensitized system.

Photothermal Conversion Efficiency of Silver and Gold Incorporated Nanosized Apatites for Biomedical Applications

The aim of this research was to investigate the photothermal ability of nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite (nHAp) incorporated with silver and gold. It was studied by using a recently developed technique evaluating the photothermal conversion efficiency. The heating performance of aqueous dispersions was examined under 445 and 532 nm excitation. The largest increase in temperature was found for the 2% Ag-nHAp and reached above 2 °C per mg/mL of sample (445 nm) under 90 mW laser continuous irradiation and an external light-to-heat conversion efficiency of 0.11 L/g cm. The obtained results have shown a new functionality of nanosized apatites that has not been considered before. The studied materials have also been characterized by XRPD, TEM, BET, and UV-Vis techniques. Finally, in this work, a new idea for their application was proposed: photothermal therapy.

In Situ Spectroscopy and Microscopy Insights into the CO Oxidation Mechanism on Au/CeO2(111)

In this work, we prepared and investigated in ultra-high vacuum (UHV) two stoichiometric CeO₂(111) surfaces containing low and high amounts of step edges decorated with 0.05 ML of gold using synchrotron-radiation photoelectron spectroscopy (SRPES) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The UHV study helped to solve the still unresolved puzzle on how the one-monolayer-high ceria step edges affect the metal-substrate interaction between Au and the CeO₂(111) surface. It was found that the concentration of ionic Au⁺ species on the ceria surface increases with increasing number of ceria step edges and is not correlated with the concentration of Ce³⁺ ions that are supposed to form on the surface after its interaction with gold nanoparticles. We associated this with an additional channel of Au⁺ formation on the surface of CeO₂(111) related to the interaction of Au atoms with various peroxo oxygen species formed at the ceria step edges during the film growth. The study of CO oxidation on the highly stepped Au/CeO₂(111) model sample was performed by combining near-ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS), UHV-STM, and near-ambient-pressure STM (NAP-STM). This powerful combination provided comprehensive information on the processes occurring on the Au/CeO₂(111) surface during the interaction with CO, O₂, and CO + O₂ (1:1) mixture at conditions close to the real working conditions of CO oxidation. It was found that the system demonstrates high stability in CO. However, the surface undergoes substantial chemical and morphological changes as the O₂ is added to the reaction cell. Already at 300 K, gold nanoparticles begin to grow using a mechanism that involves the disintegration of small gold nanoparticles in favor of the large ones. With increasing temperature, the model catalyst quickly transforms into a system of primarily large Au particles that contains no ionic gold species.

Metal-Support Interaction and Charge Distribution in Ceria-Supported Au Particles Exposed to CO

Understanding how reaction conditions affect metal-support interactions in catalytic materials is one of the most challenging tasks in heterogeneous catalysis research. Metal nanoparticles and their supports often undergo changes in structure and oxidation state when exposed to reactants, hindering a straightforward understanding of the structure-activity relations using only ex situ or ultrahigh vacuum techniques. Overcoming these limitations, we explored the metal-support interaction between gold nanoparticles and ceria supports in ultrahigh vacuum and after exposure to CO. A combination of in situ methods (on powder and model Au/CeO₂ samples) and theoretical calculations was applied to investigate the gold/ceria interface and its reactivity toward CO exposure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements rationalized by first-principles calculations reveal a distinctly inhomogeneous charge distribution, with Au⁺ atoms in contact with the ceria substrate and neutral Au⁰ atoms at the surface of the Au nanoparticles. Exposure to CO partially reduces the ceria substrate, leading to electron transfer to the supported Au nanoparticles. Transferred electrons can delocalize among the neutral Au atoms of the particle or contribute to forming inert Au^δ- atoms near oxygen vacancies at the ceria surface. This charge redistribution is consistent with the evolution of the vibrational frequencies of CO adsorbed on Au particles obtained using diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy.

Quantitative Comparison of the Light-to-Heat Conversion Efficiency in Nanomaterials Suitable for Photothermal Therapy

Functional colloidal nanoparticles capable of converting between various energy types are finding an increasing number of applications. One of the relevant examples concerns light-to-heat-converting colloidal nanoparticles that may be useful for localized photothermal therapy of cancers. Unfortunately, quantitative comparison and ranking of nanoheaters are not straightforward as materials of different compositions and structures have different photophysical and chemical properties and may interact differently with the biological environment. In terms of photophysical properties, the most relevant information to rank these nanoheaters is the light-to-heat conversion efficiency, which, along with information on the absorption capacity of the material, can be used to directly compare materials. In this work, we evaluate the light-to-heat conversion properties of 17 different nanoheaters belonging to different groups (plasmonic, semiconductor, lanthanide-doped nanocrystals, carbon nanocrystals, and metal oxides). We conclude that the light-to-heat conversion efficiency alone is not meaningful enough as many materials have similar conversion efficiencies─in the range of 80-99%─while they significantly differ in their extinction coefficient. We therefore constructed their qualitative ranking based on the external conversion efficiency, which takes into account the conventionally defined light-to-heat conversion efficiency and its absorption capacity. This ranking demonstrated the differences between the samples more meaningfully. Among the studied systems, the top-ranking materials were black porous silicon and CuS nanocrystals. These results allow us to select the most favorable materials for photo-based theranostics and set a new standard in the characterization of nanoheaters.

Confinement of nano-gold in 3D hierarchically structured gadolinium-doped ceria mesocrystal: synergistic effect of chemical composition and structural hierarchy in CO and propane oxidation

Gadolinium-doped ceria hierarchical gold catalyst shows four-fold TOF increase compared to undoped non-hierarchical system, proving the synergistic effect of doping and structural hierarchy in propane oxidation.

Functional CdS-Au Nanocomposite for Efficient Photocatalytic, Photosensitizing, and Two-Photon Applications

We demonstrate a low-temperature synthesis of hydrophilic, penicillamine-stabilized hybrid CdS-Au nanoparticles (NPs) utilizing different Au concentrations. The obtained hybrid nanomaterials exhibit photoluminescence quenching and emission lifetime reduction in comparison with their raw semiconductor CdS NPs counterparts. An increase of concentration of Au present at the surface of CdS leads to lower photoluminescence intensity and faster emission decays, suggesting more efficient charge separation when larger Au domains are present. For photocatalysis studies, we performed methylene blue (MB) absorption measurements under irradiation in the presence of CdS-Au NPs. After 1 h of light exposure, we observed the absorbance decrease to about 35% and 10% of the initial value for the CdS-5Au and CdS-7.5Au (the hybrid NPs obtained in a presence of 5.0 and 7.5 mM Au), respectively, which indicates MB reduction caused by electrons effectively separated from holes on metal surface. In further similar photocatalysis experiments, we measured bovine serum albumin (BSA) integrated photoluminescence intensity quenching in the presence of CdS-Au NPs, with a 50% decrease being obtained for CdS-2.5Au NPs and CdS-5Au NPs, with a faster response rate detected for the system prepared with a higher Au concentration. The results suggest hole-driven reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, causing BSA degeneration. Finally, we performed two-photon excited emission (TPEE) measurements for CdS-5Au NPs, obtaining their two-photon absorption (TPA) cross-section values up to 15.8 × 10³ GM (Goeppert-Mayer units). We conclude that the obtained water-soluble CdS-Au NPs exhibit potential triple functionalities as photocatalysts for reduction and oxidation reactions as well as materials for two-photon absorption applications, so that they may be considered as future theranostics.

The effect of Eu doping on the growth, structure and red-ox activity of ceria nanocubes

The ordering of oxygen vacancies (in high Eu-doped (x ≥ 0.1) ceria nanoparticles) facilitates the process of Ce⁴⁺ to Ce³⁺ reduction.
