Advancements in alveolar bone reconstruction: A systematic review of bone block utilization in dental practice

Alveolar reconstructive surgery employs a variety of surgical techniques and biomaterials, with a particular focus on bone blocks as a crucial methodology for restoring and augmenting deficient bone structures. Bone blocks are often employed to support periodontal health or as a foundation for future prosthetic rehabilitation with dental implants. This systematic review investigated recent advances in bone blocks for alveolar bone reconstruction, comparing autologous, allogeneic and xenogeneic types. A search of PubMed identified 56 records, of which 21 were included in the qualitative analysis. The studies involved 685 patients in total. Bone blocks are pivotal for three-dimensional bone regeneration, providing a stable scaffold for achieving the desired bone volume during healing. Autologous bone, harvested from the patient, boasts high biocompatibility, excellent osteogenic properties and minimal immunologic risks. However, its drawbacks include the need for an additional surgical site and extended procedural times. Allogeneic bone blocks involve transferring bone between individuals, offering increased graft availability and customization options without requiring a second surgical site. However, they exhibit moderate resorption rates and carry a heightened risk of immunologic reactions and disease transmission. Innovative techniques, such as tunneling, laser osteotomy, graft customization, and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) application on wound during surgical treatment show promise in enhancing alveolar bone reconstruction efficacy. In conclusion, despite the traditional preference for autologous bone, the review suggests that alternative materials, particularly individualized allogeneic bone blocks, coupled with modern techniques, could emerge as a standard procedure for regenerating alveolar bone defects due to their satisfactory results and potential advantages.

New Equations for the Estimation of the Age of the Formation of the Harris Lines

Harris Lines (HLs) are transverse, sclerotic lines that can be visualized by X-ray imaging and that occur in long bones, most commonly in the tibia and femur. HLs are associated with disrupted bone mineralization during endochondral ossification, affecting the normal growth process. The etiology of HLs is debated, with some claims linking their presence to detrimental factors such as inflammation, malnutrition, alcohol abuse, and diseases. The age at which HLs form can be estimated based on their location, which allows for a retrospective assessment of the individual's health status during childhood or youth. The current study is concerned with providing new equations to estimate the age of Harris Line occurrences using a simple calculating tool. Bone growth curves were derived based on a dataset provided by Byers in 1991 using non-linear estimation. The best model was chosen with the Akaike Information Criterion. New and old methods were compared through Bland-Altman plots. As a result, we managed to produce reliable, well-fitted growth curves, concordant with previous methods.

Challenges associated with vascular access through the common carotid artery during embalming procedures in humans: A technical note

BACKGROUND

The teaching of anatomy is a key component in the training of physicians, and the foundation of this teaching is the human body, which must be properly prepared to be used as a teaching aid. Due to a lack of modern literature on this topic, we decided to write a technical note discussing access to the carotid artery.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We pre-qualified 43 donor bodies for the study. The bodies had to meet standards such as no signs of post-mortem decomposition, preservation of body integrity, and the absence of known infections. Carotid artery access was performed based on descriptions of the types of vascular access performed in surgery and our own observations.

RESULTS

We consider carotid artery access to be a convenient option due to its ease of location. When performed correctly and with attention to the surrounding structures, it is relatively low in tissue trauma, which translates into a higher quality of preparation. Data analysis has revealed several factors that can have a significant impact on the success of the embalming procedure.

CONCLUSIONS

Proper execution of minimally invasive access to the common carotid artery minimizes tissue damage and ensures a high success rate of the procedure. Knowledge of the types of vascular access is essential for preparing the highest quality specimens.

Effect of four fluoroquinolones on the viability of bladder cancer cells in 2D and 3D cultures

Introduction

The anticancer properties of fluoroquinolones and the high concentrations they achieve in urine may help in bladder cancer therapy. This study aimed to analyze the properties of 4 fluoroquinolones as potential candidates for supportive treatment of bladder cancer.

Methods

Comparative analyses were performed on the cytotoxic effects of norfloxacin, enrofloxacin, moxifloxacin, and ofloxacin on normal and cancer urothelial cell lines. In 2D culture, the cytotoxic properties of fluoroquinolones were evaluated using MTT assay, real-time cell growth analysis, fluorescence and light microscopy, flow cytometry, and molecular analysis. In 3D culture, the properties of fluoroquinolones were tested using luminescence assays and confocal microscopy.

Results and Discussion

All tested fluoroquinolones in 2D culture decreased the viability of both tested cell lines in a dose- and timedependent manner. Lower concentrations did not influence cell morphology and cytoskeletal organization. In higher concentrations, destruction of the actin cytoskeleton and shrinkage of the nucleus was visible. Flow cytometry analysis showed cell cycle inhibition of bladder cancer cell lines in the G2/M phase. This influence was minimal in the case of normal urothelium cells. In both tested cell lines, increases in the number of late apoptotic cells were observed. Molecular analysis showed variable expression of studied genes depending on the drug and concentration. In 3D culture, tested drugs were effective only in the highest tested concentrations which was accompanied by caspase 3/7 activation and cytoskeleton degradation. This effect was hardly visible in non-cancer cell lines. According to the data, norfloxacin and enrofloxacin had the most promising properties. These two fluoroquinolones exhibited the highest cytotoxic properties against both tested cell lines. In the case of norfloxacin, almost all calculated LC values for bladder cancer cell lines were achievable in the urine. Enrofloxacin and norfloxacin can be used to support chemotherapy in bladder cancer patients.

Comparison of various flow maldistribution quantification methods in mini heat exchangers

The aim of study is to compare various flow maldistribution quantification methods, using velocity, mass flow rate, pressure, and temperature. An experimentally validated numerical study has been prepared and a heat exchanger with 34 semi-circular channels with a diameter of 3.1 mm has been tested. The minichannels were heated from the bottom with a heat flux of 50, 60, 70, and 80 kW/m². The cases for various inlet velocities of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 m/s have been tested. It results in a total of 16 cases with various heat flux and various inlet velocities of the water. Then, for every 16 cases, the flow maldistribution coefficients, widely used in the literature, have been calculated based on the velocity, pressure, and temperature profiles. The study shows that every method gives other results of the same parameter that should define the flow distribution in the heat exchanger in the same way. Hence, the ambiguities of fluid distribution conclusions in heat exchangers that can be found in the literature may be caused by a different interpretation of the flow maldistribution coefficient. A normalized flow maldistribution coefficient that gives the same results for all thermohydraulic parameters used has been proposed.

Selective Growth of van der Waals Heterostructures Enabled by Electron-Beam Irradiation

Van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHSs) enable the fabrication of complex electronic devices based on two-dimensional (2D) materials. Ideally, these vdWHSs should be fabricated in a scalable and repeatable way and only in the specific areas of the substrate to lower the number of technological operations inducing defects and impurities. Here, we present a method of selective fabrication of vdWHSs via chemical vapor deposition by electron-beam (EB) irradiation. We distinguish two growth modes: positive (2D materials nucleate on the irradiated regions) on graphene and tungsten disulfide (WS₂) substrates, and negative (2D materials do not nucleate on the irradiated regions) on the graphene substrate. The growth mode is controlled by limiting the air exposure of the irradiated substrate and the time between irradiation and growth. We conducted Raman mapping, Kelvin-probe force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density-functional theory modeling studies to investigate the selective growth mechanism. We conclude that the selective growth is explained by the competition of three effects: EB-induced defects, adsorption of carbon species, and electrostatic interaction. The method here is a critical step toward the industry-scale fabrication of 2D-materials-based devices.

Distance of the cervical part of the internal carotid artery from the selected anatomical structures in the parapharyngeal space and its relation to patient characteristics

Anomalies of the internal carotid artery (ICA) can increase the risk of haemorrhage during common surgical procedures. The aim of this literature review was to summarize the current state of knowledge on the course of the internal carotid artery in the parapharyngeal space, including the impact of the patient characteristics on the distances between the artery and other anatomical structures, as well as symptoms accompanying the aberrations. Pathologies related to the course of ICA in the parapharyngeal space are common (10%-60% in the general population and up to 84.4% in the elderly). In women, the distances in the oropharynx area are shorter than in men. Although the number of morphological studies is growing, providing more information on this topic, the identified studies differ in the methods and results. Knowledge on the variability in the course of ICA can help identify patients at high risk for the ICA trauma during pharyngeal procedures.

Two-Dimensional Crystals as a Buffer Layer for High Work Function Applications: The Case of Monolayer MoO3

We propose that the crystallinity of two-dimensional (2D) materials is a crucial factor for achieving highly effective work function (WF) modification. A crystalline 2D MoO₃ monolayer enhances substrate WF up to 6.4 eV for thicknesses as low as 0.7 nm. Such a high WF makes 2D MoO₃ a great candidate for tuning properties of anode materials and for the future design of organic electronic devices, where accurate evaluation of the WF is crucial. We provide a detailed investigation of WF of 2D α-MoO₃ directly grown on highly ordered pyrolytic graphite, by means of Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS). This study underlines the importance of a controlled environment and the resulting crystallinity to achieve high WF in MoO₃. UPS is proved to be suitable for determining higher WF attributed to 2D islands on a substrate with lower WF, yet only in particular cases of sufficient coverage. KPFM remains a method of choice for nanoscale investigations, especially when conducted under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Our experimental results are supported by density functional theory calculations of electrostatic potential, which indicate that oxygen vacancies result in anisotropy of WF at the sides of the MoO₃ monolayer. These novel insights into the electronic properties of 2D-MoO₃ are promising for the design of electronic devices with high WF monolayer films, preserving the transparency and flexibility of the systems.

Morphology of the antegonial notch and its utility in the determination of sex on skeletal materials

A number of criteria for the assessment of biological sex, which are applied to living or recently deceased individuals, have been developed, such as genetic, chromosomal, gonadal, hormonal, and phenotypic criteria. Features of a metric and descriptive nature are used to assess the sex of skeletal materials. The diagnostic features of the skull are concentrated in the craniofacial region and around the eye sockets. The mandible is a diagnostically important part of the skull, on which a complex of features is visible. These features develop up to the third decade of life. The goal of the research was to assess the suitability of the parameters of the preangular notch, in other words, the length, height, and surface area for sex prediction applied to skeletal materials. The study included computed tomography images of the masticatory system of 194 patients, consisting of 83 females and 111 males, aged from 16 to 93 years. The three straight lines which correspond to the sides of the triangle representing the notch, in addition to its height, were determined and measured digitally. The receiver operating characteristic method was used to assess the usefulness of the studied features for the purposes of sex prediction. The sensitivity of the test ranged from 51.4% to 67% for the parameters of the preangular notch on the right-hand side, and from 44.4% to 80.2% on the left-hand side. The most reliable predictive models were obtained for two features (shown in the graphical abstract). However, when taking into account, the specificity and sensitivity of the tests presented here, only the length of side AB (a basal length of the notch) can be regarded as a feature that supports the assessment of sex on the basis of other diagnostic features of the mandible. The size and shape of the preangular notch should be treated as auxiliary features in the assessment of sex. For this reason, it is recommended that they should be applied simultaneously to the set of features described in the section on anthropological standards.

Nutritional reconstruction in an early modern population: Searching for a relationship between dental microwear and bone element composition

BACKGROUND

Observing the microwear patterns of the dental crowns enamel surface can provide information on the ingredients and structure of the food consumed, but also on eating habits and lifestyle. Major role in reconstructing the diet and lifestyle of past populations is played by the analysis of alkaline earth metals, such as strontium, barium, zinc and calcium. Ba and Sr are indicators of the consumption of vegetables, plants (cereals and legumes) and marine organisms. This study aims to assess dietary diversity and identify its components based on microscopic techniques and chemical analyses of material from early modern archaeological sites in Wrocław, Poland.

METHODS

The material consisted of 36 permanent molars and the intrasternal parts of 122 first ribs, collected from 6 Wroclaw early modern cemeteries. Tooth microwear was evaluated on Scanning electron microscopy images, with Microwear 4.02 software. Bone chemical composition (Ca, P, Ba, Sr content) was evaluated with mass spectrometry.

RESULTS

Most lines were present on the teeth from St. Mary Magdalene Cemetery, with the lowest average number of lines observed on the teeth from St. Barbara Cemetery. The Ca/P ratios calculated for different sites formed two clusters that allows to distinguish two groups of archaeological sites with different bone preservation status. Number of differences in Ba/Sr, Sr/Ca, Ba/Ca ratios was found between disctinct archaeological sites. A number of correlations were found between the concentration of the chemical elements, but no statistically significant correlation was found between the microwear characteristics and the proportion of the elements studied. Some strong correlations were found between microwear features and the Ca/P ratio.

CONCLUSIONS

the different values of Sr/Ca, Ba/Ca and Ba/Sr ratios indicate different diets in the different communities. The data obtained indicate a mixed diet, with a relatively high proportion of animal products throughout Wrocław. Conclusions should be treated with caution due to secondary diagenesis. The lack of interdependence between microwear and chemical composition characteristics suggests that the two methods should be considered complementary and not overlapping, as they provide different insights into the diets of past populations. The comparison of microwear between different sites should always take into account secondary diagenesis and the burial environment, as these influence the characteristics of microwear.

Increased Expression of p63 Protein and Sonic Hedgehog Signaling Molecule in Buccal Epithelial Holoclones

Construction of many tissues and organs de novo requires the use of external epithelial cell sources. In the present study, we optimized the isolation, expansion, and characterization of porcine oral epithelial cells from buccal tissue (Buccal Epithelial Cells, BECs). Additionally, we tested whether key markers [cytokeratin 14 (ck14), p63 protein, and sonic hedgehog molecule (shh)] expression profiles are correlated with three buccal epithelial clone types. Two digestion methods of BECs isolation [Method 1, M1 (collagenase IV/dispase and accutase) and Method 2, M2 (collagenase IV/dispase and trypsin/EDTA)] were compared. Cells obtained by more effective method were further cultured to the third passage and analyzed. Holoclone-, meroclone-, and paraclone-like colonies were identified based on BEC morphology. Immunofluorescent staining was performed to compare selected markers for the indicated buccal clone types. Comparative analysis demonstrated the advantage of isolation using M1 over M2. Cells from the third passage exhibited average 92.73% ± 2.27% presence of ck14. Real-time polymerase chain reaction confirmed expression of tested genes [cytokeratin 8 (ck8), ck14, integrin β1, and p63]. The highest level of ck14, shh and p63, was observed for holoclones. The comparable ck14 expression was observed in the mero- and paraclones. Meroclones expressed significantly lower levels of shh compared with paraclones. The weakest p63 expression was observed in the paraclone-like cells. It was demonstrated that holoclones are the richest in shh (+) and p63 (+) stem cells and these cells should appear to be a promising alternative for obtaining epithelial cells for tissue engineering purposes.

Estimation of age at onset of linear enamel hypoplasia. New calculation tool, description and comparison of current methods

Enamel Hypoplasia (EH) is known to be a useful indicator for wide range of detrimental factors in early childhood in past populations, such as nutritional disturbances, mechanical trauma, disease, metabolic, and/or genetic disorders. EH may be divided into three categories: pits, grooves, and lines, where the last two are referred to as "Linear Enamel Hypoplasia" (LEH). The regularity of enamel formation allows retrospective determination of the age of LEH formation. The current article reviews and compares the best-known methods used to estimate age at LEH formation and provides a new computational tool. Growth curves for canines and incisors were developed based on tooth growth tables by previous authors. Optimal models were selected using the Akaike Information Criterion. A Microsoft Excel spreadsheet was created to calculate age at LEH formation using the most common methods. All method results were compared with an archaeological sample (44 teeth of 18 individuals from an early modern cemetery from Wrocław, Poland) and a theoretical model. The results of the methods were compared pairwise with Bland-Altman plots. The current article provides a quick and easy-to-use tool for analyzing LEH chronology and comparing the results of different methods. As shown by the Bland-Altman plots, most methods provide approximately consistent results for LEHs formed at around 2-3 years of age. However, LEHs formed particularly early or late are more prone to discrepancies between different methods. Comparison of the age at LEH formation obtained by different methods should be done carefully - and the new LEH calculation tool with optimized equations provided in this publication can facilitate this process.

Dentists can provide reliable shear wave elastography measurements of the stiffness of masseter muscles: A possible scenario for a faster diagnostic process

BACKGROUND

Masseter muscle pathologies include hypertrophy and the experience of pain, which clinically manifest with increased stiffness and tension. Assessment of muscle stiffness has been gaining importance among physicians dealing with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Currently, shear wave elastography (SWE) is still often performed by radiologists, while dentists diagnose, treat and monitor TMD.

OBJECTIVES

In this cohort study, we investigated whether dentists trained to use SWE can obtain reliable measurements of masseter muscle stiffness following participation in a short training program and hands-on workshop.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A group of healthy volunteers was examined by an experienced radiologist and a novice dentist before and after the training.

RESULTS

The mean values of stiffness obtained by the operators were consistent and ranged from 10.20 kPa to 10.84 kPa. Intraobserver agreement was excellent for measurements of the radiologist (intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) 0.92 and 0.93, respectively). The training improved the agreement between measurements made by the dentist from poor before the training (ICC = 0.46) to good after the training (ICC = 0.89). Also, the operator agreement between the radiologist and dentist increased from poor (ICC = 0.48) before the training to good (ICC = 0.84) after the training.

CONCLUSIONS

The diagnostic accuracy of measuring masseter muscle stiffness was acceptable among dentists after the training. For this reason, the patient can be diagnosed by a single TMD specialist. This can shorten the diagnostic process and reduce treatment costs.

Seabed Topography Changes in the Sopot Pier Zone in 2010-2018 Influenced by Tombolo Phenomenon

Bathymetric surveys of the same body of water, performed at regular intervals, apart from updating the geospatial information used to create paper and electronic maps, allow for several additional analyses, including an evaluation of geomorphological changes occurring in the coastal zone. This research is particularly important in places where the shape of the coastal zone has been violently disturbed, including by human activity. Tombolo is such a phenomenon and it dynamically shapes the new hydrological conditions of the coastal zone. Apart from natural factors, it may be caused by the construction of hydrotechnical facilities in the littoral zone. It causes a significant disturbance in the balance of the marine environment, resulting in the bottom accretion and dynamic changes in the coastline. This has been the case since 2010 in Sopot, where the rapidly advancing tombolo is not only changing environmental relations but also threatening the health-spa character of the town by stopping the transport of sand along the coast. This paper analyses changes in seabed shape in the pier area in Sopot between 2010 and 2018. In the analysis, both archival maps and bathymetric surveys over a period of 8 years were used; based on these, numerical bottom models were developed and their geospatial changes were analyzed. The results showed that changes in the seabed in this area are progressing very quickly, despite periodic dredging actions organized by administrative bodies.

Surface-Bound and Volatile Mo Oxides Produced During Oxidation of Single MoS2 Crystals in Air and High Relative Humidity

We report on the MoO₃ oxides and their derivatives on microscopic 2H MoS₂ flakes oxidized in air and high relative humidity at a moderate temperature range below 410 °C. We combine XPS and AFM measurements such as topography, friction, creation of nanoscale ripples and scratches on the MoS₂ flakes deposited on Si substrates. We detect MoO₃ oxides mostly by measuring selected nanomechanical properties of the MoO₃ layer, such as its compressive mechanical stress at the plastic yield. We discuss basal surface coverage of the single MoS₂ flakes by the MoO₃ oxides. We discuss conditions for appearance of all possible MoO₃ oxide derivatives, such as molybdenum(VI) hydroxyoxides and MoO₃ hydrates. Our findings agree with an expected mechanistic switch in thermal oxidation in water vapors vs. air.

Assessing weaning stress - Relations between enamel hypoplasia, δ18O and δ13C values in human teeth obtained from early modern cemeteries in Wroclaw, Poland

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this paper is to assess linear enamel hypoplasia (LEH) on canines of adults from early modern Wroclaw cemeteries to compare δ¹³C and δ¹⁸O values in enamel formed before, during and after LEH formation, and to attempt to find a link between the selected indicators of the weaning process.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

15 permanent canines with visible LEH were selected for analysis. Age at LEH formation was estimated using the Reid and Dean method. The perikymata count was used to estimate the duration of LEH formation. Incremental stable oxygen and carbon isotopes analysis was performed on tooth enamel to infer stress related to weaning and dietary patterns. Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA, Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman correlation were used in statistical inference.

RESULTS

The average age of LEH formation was 3.14 years, with an average duration of 111 days. Stable carbon isotope values consistently increase in 73% of the individuals sampled. The values of δ¹⁸O do not show a dominant pattern. The average value of δ¹³C increases over the time of enamel formation. The δ¹³C values collected below LEH were negatively correlated with δ¹⁸O values and the duration of LEH termination.

CONCLUSIONS

Marking of carbon and oxygen isotopes indicates different stages of weaning. Advancements in diet change (determined by higher δ¹³C) corresponds with faster recovery after physiological stress episode. There is no evidence for different breastfeeding models between distinct parishes in early modern Wroclaw.

Post-traumatic bilateral scapular and thoracic vertebral body fractures - a case report

The simultaneous fracture of both scapulae with coexisting fracture of the thoracic vertebral body is observed extremely rarely and is fully dependent on the mechanism that caused them.

A CASE REPORT

The 59-year-old patient was admitted to the trauma and orthopedic department because of back pain and the inability to move independently. A few hours earlier he suffered bludgeoning trauma from a thick branch falling from a tree. During the physical examination significant limitation the range of motion in shoulder joints with was found. <15 ° flexion and <30 ° abduction, with limited external rotation in the right shoulder joint, and <15 ° flexion and <15 ° abduction, with significant external rotation deficiency. Normal range of motion in both hands was preserved. No sensory deficits or paresis were observed. Radiographic examination revealed the presence of a multifragmentary fracture of both scapulae and a fracture of the Th9 vertebral body, which was confirmed by computed tomography of the chest. The patient was qualified for conservative treatment of scapular fractures and was fitted with an abduction splint for the left shoulder. The Th9 vertebral body required surgical approach. The patient underwent transpedicular stabilization of the Th7,8,9,10 vertebrae with precontoured rods for the kyphotic deformation of the spine. After the procedure, the patient was provided with Javette's brace strengthening the spine correction and discharged for further outpatient observation.

CONCLUSIONS

Fracture of the scapula is one of the most demanding fractures to diagnose in the classic radiological examination. CT scans with 3D reconstruction can be considered to be the "gold standard". Surgical procedures is indicated for patients with severe comminution of fracture fragments and neurological symptoms. Minor fracture displacements can be conservatively treated. Coexisting Th9 vertebra fracture in this case required surgery by posterior transpedicular stabilization.

Diagnodent and VistaCam may be unsuitable for the evaluation of dental caries in archeological teeth

OBJECTIVES

The aim of the study was to compare the usefulness of fluorescence-based caries detection systems (Diagnodent and VistaCam) for the assessment of carious lesions on archeological molars.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The study material consisted of teeth from the Cemetery of St. Mary Magdalene (Cmentarz św. Marii Magdaleny) in Wrocław, Poland. A sample of 178 permanent molars from 38 skulls were examined. Five surfaces of teeth (occlusal, mesial, distal, buccal, and lingual) were assessed on either basically cleaned or sandblasted teeth. Six diagnostic methods were used to detect carious lesions: the visual classification of the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS II), fluorescent methods (Diagnodent and VistaCam), X-ray, cone beam computed tomography and histological sections. The sensitivity and specificity of the methods were determined using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and the correlation between the severity of dental caries and the readouts obtained with each method.

RESULTS

In most cases, Diagnodent and VistaCam yielded unsatisfactory specificity and sensitivity values. The area under curve (AUC) values in ROC curves for Diagnodent and Vistacam were lower than the AUC values obtained for the ICDAS II visual classification.

CONCLUSIONS

According to our results, in the case of archeological teeth, neither Diagnodent nor VistaCam can be regarded as a better diagnostic method than the ICDAS II visual classification of caries.

Inverted and horizontal impacted third molars in an Early Modern skull from Wroclaw, Poland: a case report

BACKGROUND

An impacted tooth is one of the most commonly occurring dental anomalies, although some types of impaction (i.e. inverted angulation) may be considered rare finding. There are many hypotheses regarding impaction aetiology. One of the most popular hypotheses suggested that this condition may result from insufficient space in retromolar space, other: improper angulation of tooth bud, malposition of the tooth germ or hereditary factors, insufficient interproximal attrition, ectopy or dysfunction of genes necessary for proper tooth eruption. This study aims to present the odontological and paleopathological assessment of the impacted molars observed within the skull excavated from an early modern cemetery in Wroclaw.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The skull used in the study was complete and in a good state of preservation. It belonged to an adult individual whose body was buried at the former Salvator Cemetery (currently Czysty Square). The individual's dentition was almost completely lost antemortem. Only second molars preserved within the maxillae (bilaterally) and the mandible was almost edentulous as well. The morphometric traits have been taken according to standards established by R. Martin. Macroscopic observations were supported by X-rays and computed tomography imaging.

RESULTS

The age at death was estimated at 20-35 years. Comparison of the metric characteristics of skull with the reference material reveals that it is much smaller than the average female skull from this series. Morphometric indices calculated for both splanchocranium and neurocranium allow defining the skull and jaw as short, which could be an important factor involved in the teeth impaction.

CONCLUSIONS

Atypical impaction of the third molars could result from small size of skull and could have significantly deteriorated the quality of life of the individual.

Measured versus self-reported body height and body mass in patients after an acute coronary syndrome

The basic anthropometric data describing a person in the broadest context are body weight and height, two of the most frequently analyzed somatometric parameters. The same is true I in relation to clinical patients. The aim of the present study was to compare the self-reported and actual body weight, height and BMI in patients suffering from coronary artery disease and undergoing cardiac rehabilitation. The study sample consisted of 100 patients treated for coronary artery disease. The patients were asked to state their body weight and height. At the same time a three-person study team took measurements, which were later the basis for verification and objective assessment of the data provided by the patients. Statistical analysis was performed with Statistics 11.0 PL software. The analysis of mean results for the assessed group of patients has shown the presence of statistically significant differences between declared and actual data. The differences were observed for both male and female study population. It has been proven that the subjects declare greater body height (mean value 1.697 m vs. 1.666 m) and lower body weight (80.643 kg vs. 82.051 kg). Based on the data from surveys and direct measurements, the body mass index for the self-reported and actual data was calculated. A comparison of these values has shown considerable statistically significant differences. The differences between declared and actual data point to highly subjective self-assessment, which disqualifies the declared data in the context of monitoring of treatment and rehabilitation processes. The authors believe that actual data should be used in direct trial examination of patients suffering from coronary artery disease who presented with acute coronary syndrome.

The sequence of lanugo pattern development on the trunk wall in human fetuses

BACKGROUND

Due to a growing interest in developmental disorders, and in the long-term skin appendage diseases, both in the cosmetic industry and among specialists in dermatology (broadly defined), there is an increasing number of papers on hair development. The publications by the present team of authors are part of this trend.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of the study was to describe the topography and typology of skin pilosity patterns in human fetuses.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A total of 278 fetuses (141 male and 137 female) were qualified for the study. The gestational age ranged from 69 to 226 days after conception. All fetuses were taken from a local collection.

RESULTS

The study revealed that the first single hairs occur on the posterior wall of the trunk in the 17th week of fetal life, and on the anterior wall between the 18th and 19th week. It was found that in human fetuses lanugo appears statistically significantly later on the skin of the anterior of the trunk than on its posterior. The difference in absolute time is almost 2 weeks of fetal life. No other differences were found in the development cycle of lanugo on the anterior and posterior walls of the trunk. A full pattern was first observed on the posterior wall of the trunk in a fetus in the 19th week, and on the anterior wall in the 21st week. It was found that the process of lanugo development was completed on the posterior wall in the 23rd week, and on the surface of the abdomen in the 26th week.

CONCLUSIONS

The lanugo developmental cycle, consisting in the appearance of the first single hairs, then partial hair and subsequently the formation of final patterns, is the same on both walls of the trunk.

A case of concrescent tooth-A developmental anomaly in a 19th century skull from Uganda

Dental abnormalities in archeological material such us concrescence or odontoma are rare cases often found accidentally, mostly during routine X-ray analysis or during macroscopic examination of the mastication apparatus. In this study, we present a rare case of concrescence between an upper left third molar and a supernumerary fourth molar in a 19th century skull from Uganda. Simultaneously, it is a critical revision of earlier studies on the same object (which considered this abnormality as an odontoma), using dental X-ray imaging and histological analysis. Concrescence is a rare dental anomaly and this specimen is, to the best of our knowledge, the first such case reported in paleopathological studies of Eastern Africa. It may contribute to recognition and identification of etiopathogenetic factors in dental developmental defects in historical and contemporary populations of Africa.

Wrist ultrasound examination - scanning technique and ultrasound anatomy. Part 2: Ventral wrist

Ultrasound imaging of the musculoskeletal system is an important element of the diagnostic and therapeutic protocol. Clinical decisions, including those regarding surgical procedures, are often based solely on ultrasound imaging. However, detailed knowledge on the anatomy and a correct scanning technique are crucial for an accurate diagnosis. Modern ultrasonographic equipment allows obtaining detailed anatomical images of muscle tendons, ligaments, nerves and vessels of the carpal area. Ventral wrist ultrasound is one of the most common diagnostic procedures in patients with suspected carpal tunnel syndrome. Ventral wrist evaluation is also often performed in patients with wrist pain of unclear etiology, rheumatic diseases, wrist injuries or symptoms of ulnar neuropathy. The aim of this paper is to present ultrasound images with corresponding anatomical schemes. The technique of ultrasound examination of the ventral wrist along with practical guidance to help obtain highly diagnostic images is also discussed. The present paper is the second part of an article devoted to ultrasound anatomy and wrist ultrasound technique – the part discussing the dorsal side of the wrist was published in the Journal of Ultrasonography, Vol. 15, No 61. The following anatomical structures should be visualized during an ultrasound examination of the ventral wrist, both in the carpal tunnel as well as proximally and distally to it: four flexor digitorum superficialis tendons, four flexor digitorum profundus tendons, flexor pollicis longus, flexor carpi radialis tendon, median nerve and flexor retinaculum; in the carpal tunnel as well as proximally and distally to it: the ulnar nerve, ulnar artery and veins; the tendon of the flexor carpi ulnaris muscle; carpal joints.

The face of conflict: Significant sharp force trauma to the mid-facial skeleton in an individual of probable 16th-17th century date excavated from Byczyna, Poland

A variety of injuries have always been associated with violence, consequences of which people had to deal with. In this paper we present a complex of craniofacial and dental injuries resulted from sharp force trauma. The basis of our study was historical skeletal material excavated from archeological site in Byczyna (11th-17th century), Poland. An individual whose skeleton was exhumed from the grave No. 610 exhibited healed, oblique trauma of the left maxilla, damage to the crowns of right central and lateral incisors and concomitant luxation of the right maxillary central incisor. We describe the mechanism of this trauma and complications that resulted from damage to the masticatory apparatus.

Bis(Cyclic Alkyl Amino Carbene) Ruthenium Complexes: A Versatile, Highly Efficient Tool for Olefin Metathesis

The state-of-the-art in olefin metathesis is application of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-containing ruthenium alkylidenes for the formation of internal C=C bonds and of cyclic alkyl amino carbene (CAAC)-containing ruthenium benzylidenes in the production of terminal olefins. A straightforward synthesis of bis(CAAC)Ru indenylidene complexes, which are highly effective in the formation of both terminal and internal C=C bonds at loadings as low as 1 ppm, is now reported.

Effects of aging on the function of the urinary system: longitudinal changes with age in selected urine parameters in a hospitalized population of older adults

Although normal aging does not have a pernicious effect on the homeostasis of fluids, renal reserve in elderly people can be depleted. The purpose of the present study was to assess the relationship between longitudinal changes with age in basic urine parameters (specific gravity and pH) in older men and women, depending on their body height and relative body weight. Longitudinal data on these two quantitative traits of the urine were available for 142 physically healthy individuals, including 68 men and 74 women. All subjects were 45 years of age at the beginning and 70 at the end of the period under investigation. All measurements were taken in accordance with internationally accepted requirements. Specific gravity was assessed using a hydrometer, and pH was measured using a pH meter. ANOVA, t-test, and regression analysis were performed. No significant sex differences in specific gravity or urine pH were observed. In both sexes, urine specific gravity decreased with age according to exponential model of regression. In men, there was a gradual increase in the pH of the urine until age 65, and the best fitting regression model was polynomial. In women, on the other hand, there was an exiguous decrease in urine pH throughout the period under study, and the best fitting regression model proved to be exponential. As the process of renal aging commences relatively early in ontogeny and manifests itself in many structural and functional changes, urinalysis and other more sophisticated methods of diagnosis of renal diseases are essential for proper assessment of health status of adults and older individuals. The rate of age-related changes in the analyzed traits of the urine was commensurate in both sexes, thereby revealing no evidence of significant sex differences in terms of renal aging in the period between 45 and 70 years of age.

Two cases of osteoid osteoma in skulls dating from the 13–14th centuries from St. Elisabeth’s Church in Wrocław, Poland

In the study two human skulls recovered from archaeological excavations at St. Elizabeth’s Church in Wrocław, dating from the 13-14th centuries were assessed. Direct measurements of each skull were recorded, and X-ray images in P-A, lateral and basal projections were taken. The skulls represented adult males. Large, bony, lobular tumours were found on the palatine bones of both skulls. X-ray examination identified these tumours as osteoid osteomas, which are benign bone tumours that may originate in the periosteum or may be located inside the bone, distorting the maxilla or mandible. However, osteoid osteoma of the palatine is very rare. This study extends our knowledge regarding the health and diseases of historical populations.

Cardiovascular Risk Factors Among Lower Silesian Students of the Faculty of Medicine: Knowledge and Distribution

BACKGROUND

Cardiovascular disease is a major contributor to the global burden of disease. Further reduction of cardiovascular mortality will require multidirectional prevention. Popularizing prevention measures requires the involvement of qualified and well-educated personnel. Before any modifications of educational programs it is necessary to assess the level of knowledge of future physicians.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of the study was to evaluate medical students' knowledge of cardiovascular (CV) risk factors. The paper presents the outcomes of a study investigating the knowledge of CV risk factors and the prevalence of those risk factors in the study population.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The study was conducted between 2007 and 2012 and the study population was comprised of 1406 students (497 men and 909 women) from South and South Western Poland. A survey designed by the authors, based on the Framingham survey, was used for the interviews.

RESULTS

The students correctly identified 4.38 ± 0.91 CV risk factors. The most frequently listed risk factors for cardiovascular diseases were a lack of physical activity and a fat-rich diet. The study participants who identified CV risk factors more or less accurately do not follow the recommendations aimed at prevention. Awareness, even relatively high awareness, does not correlate with a healthy lifestyle. Extreme examples of this are people who are aware of the negative effects of cigarette smoking but continue to smoke.

CONCLUSIONS

The study revealed an insufficient level of awareness of CV risk factors among medical students.

Prompt chlorophyll a fluorescence as a rapid tool for diagnostic changes in PSII structure inhibited by salt stress in Perennial ryegrass

Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) is one of the most popular grass species in Europe. It is commonly used for establishing the lawns in urban areas, where the salt stress is one of the major environmental conditions limiting its growth. The basic aim of this study was the detailed in vivo analysis of the changes in photosynthetic efficiency, induced by salt stress, of two lawn varieties of Perennial ryegrass and to find out the variety of better properties to create lawn on the soils contaminated with salt. Two lawn varieties of L. perenne L. were used: Nira and Roadrunner. The salinization was applied 8 weeks after sowing by adding NaCl in water solution (0, 0.15, and 0.30 M). The measurements were carried out 8 times: 0, 24, 48, 96, 144, 192, 240 and 288 h after salinization. Our results revealed that the disturbance of PSII function could easily be estimated by measuring chlorophyll a fluorescence and analyzing that signal by JIP-test. Our work allowed to identify various limiting parameters of photosynthetic efficiency of perennial ryegrass lawn varieties grown under salt stress conditions. This knowledge can allow for selection of plants with a higher potential photosynthetic efficiency (vitality) during salt stress conditions, that can be used successfully neighboring roads, where salt is applied.

A case of elongated styloid process in a modern-age skull from Puerto Cabello, Venezuela

BACKGROUND

The styloid process (SP) arises from cartilage of the second branchial arch and tends to calcify during later life. If the length of the SP is more than 30 mm, it can be considered abnormally elongated. Clinical symptoms associated with elongation of this type are defined as Eagle's syndrome. The paper presents a case of an elongated SP in a modern skull from Puerto Cabello, Venezuela, obtained from a series of skulls of African slaves kept at the Department of Anthropology, Polish Academy of Sciences in Wroclaw.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The skull belonged to a male individual, aged ca. 55 years at death (maturus). In terms of basic anthropometric features it had slightly greater facial width parameters in comparison to the cerebral part, and a shorter length of neurocranium when compared to average values of morphological features in African skulls from Uganda.

RESULTS

Further macroscopic analysis revealed the presence of an elongated SP (ca. 70.1 mm) with secondary lesions remaining after a healed fracture. Imaging of the bone structure of the elongated SP was carried out using a computed to-mography scan, with multilevel image analysis without contrast. The elongation and calcification of the left ligament in anterior orientation could have caused irritation to the structure of cranial nerves, running within the parapharyngeal space, and to sympathetic fibres running in the wall of cervical arteries.

CONCLUSIONS

Analyses of craniological materials recovered during excavations or as part of old osteological collections are rare due to the fragility of this bone structure, and for that reason they may be a valuable source of information on the health status of historic human populations.

Assessment of iron in uterine and testicular tissues and hair of free-ranging and household cats

Iron (Fe) represents a highly essential element for various biological processes. In spite of this very little is known as regards its status in mammalian reproductive tissues and factors that may potentially influence it. At the same time, there is an ongoing debate as to whether analyses of the Fe content in hair can provide reliable information on its tissue burden. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the content of Fe in the testicular and uterine tissues, and hair of the domestic cat (Felis catus) and how this content relates to an animal’s age, weight, physical activity, inhabited environment and diet. The median Fe content in the feline reproductive tissues amounted to 50.8 ppm and in hair to 180.2 ppm. As found, free-ranging cats were characterized by a significantly higher Fe content in reproductive tissues, particularly in the uterus. Age, weight and physical activity had no effect on determined Fe levels. The type of commercial diet (wet, dry or combined) given to household cats also had no influence upon Fe status in hair and tissue although males fed exclusively on dry food had a lower Fetestis:Fehairratio. Hair Fe level was positively correlated with that found in the reproductive tissues (Rs=0.30). This study extends the body of information on Fe distribution in felines, demonstrates the difference between free-ranging and household cats and provides evidence that Fe hair status may, at least partially, reflect the status of this element in the feline reproductive system.

Remembrance of professor Tadeusz Marciniak - Lviv tradition in Wrocław

After the seizure of Lviv by the Soviets, in the years 1944-1946, Tadeusz Marciniak worked in the Descriptive Anatomy Department in the State-Medical Institute of Lviv and also performed the function of the dean of the Medical Faculty. On receiving a proposal to assume the Chair of the Anatomy Department in Wrocław, he made the decision to leave Lviv. By July 2nd, 1946, prof. Tadeusz Marciniak had taken over the duties of full professor of the Descriptive Anatomy Department of the Medical Faculty of the University and the Technical College of Wrocław. On taking his job in Wrocław, prof. Marciniak undertook attempts to restore the worn out parts of the Anatomy Department building. Due to the lack of Polish manuals, he also took to the preparation of scripts for medical students. Professor Marciniak was a member of the Wrocław Section of the Polish Anthropological Association and a regular member of the Wroclaw Association of Science. His main scientific interests referred to the morphogenesis of the central nervous system and urinary system. He concentrated on circulatory system and muscular system tetralogies. Professor Marciniak also actively participated in administrative work at the university. In the years 1947-1948, he held the office of associate dean of the Medical Faculty, and till 1950 was a member of the Senate of the University and Technical College of Wrocław. In the years 1959-1962, he was a vice rector of the Medical University of Wrocław.

Electrocardiogram teletransmission and teleconsultation: essential elements of the organisation of medical care for patients with ST segment elevation myocardial infarction: a single centre experience

BACKGROUND

Optimal treatment of ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) should be initiated immediately. System delay is considered an important indicator of quality of care in STEMI, and at the same time it is an independent predictor of clinical outcomes. It can be modified largely by introducing organisational changes. Although conditions have been created in Poland for common use of electrocardiogram (ECG) teletransmission and direct transfer of all STEMI patients to cardiac catheterisation laboratories, no uniform management algorithms have been introduced.

AIM

To summarize several years of our experience with the use of ECG teletransmission and teleconsultation system in a Polish rural region, present conclusions drawn from practical use of the suggested management algorithm, and compare effectiveness of this system in its early and established phases.

METHODS

The reported network consists of a single percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)-capable hospital, emergency medical services (EMS) system, and several local non-PCI-capable hospitals. We extensively discussed the management algorithm based on prehospital diagnosis with ECG teletransmission and teleconsultation, and direct patient transfer to a PCI-capable hospital. Delays seen immediately after the system was introduced were compared with data obtained after several years of its stable functioning.

RESULTS

In 2005-2013, the average time to STEMI reperfusion therapy (total delay) was 282.3 (median 213) min, patient-related delay was 164.1 (median 74) min, and system delay was 116.8 (median 111) min. Primary PCI was performed in 93% of STEMI patients, with 21.1% of patients treated within 90 min after the first medical contact (FMC) and 61.1% of patients treated within 120 min after FMC. In 2006-2010, no significant change in the total delay was seen (340 min in 2006 vs. 311 min in 2010, p = 0.1429). A significant reduction was seen in the system delay both overall (-8.3%, p = 0.0318) and in hospital (-24.0%, p < 0.0001). Primary PCI was performed within 90 min after FMC in 14.0% of patients in 2006 and in 30.6% of patients in 2010 (+118.6%, p = 0.0049), and within 120 min after FMC in 55% and 62.2% of patients, respectively (p = 0.3008). The delay from FMC to the diagnosis decreased (-32.1%, p = 0.0356) but the overall EMS delay did not change (102.7 vs. 103.7 min, p = 0.6725). Patient transfer time to the cardiac catheterisation laboratory remained unchanged (54.8 vs. 60.1 min, p = 0.0828), as was the patient-related delay (161.9 vs. 150.2 min, p = 0.2801).

CONCLUSIONS

An ECG teletransmission and teleconsultation system reduces the system delay. ECG teletransmission systems work well in rural areas with low population density and a single large PCI-capable hospital. With increasing experience, a gradual increase in the effectiveness of management protocols involving ECG teletransmission is seen.

Topography of the mental foramen in human skulls originating from different time periods

The location of the mental foramen is used in a number of maxillofacial surgical procedures and in anthropological examinations. The position of the mental foramen has been reported to vary in different ethnic groups and in different historical populations. The aim of this work was to analyse the topography of the mental foramen in mandibles from selected historical populations from the Pomeranian region in Poland. The material consisted of three groups: 92 skulls from the beginning of the 20th century from Szczecin (earlier name Stettin), and two Mediaeval groups -31 skulls from Rurka (historic Rörchen), 18th-19th centuries, and 50 skulls from Sypniewo (historic Zyppnow), 11th-13th centuries. Distances of the mental foramen in relation to the midline, and to the second corresponding point were measured. Additionally, non-metric traits of the mental foramen were recorded. No significant differences in average diameters of the mental foramina measured on the right and the left sides were observed between historical populations. On both sides, in all groups, the foramen was mainly located between positions of the lower first and lower second premolars. In all three groups the direction of the opening of the mental foramen was superoposterior. The similar level of epigenetic variation was observed in all groups. The position and the direction of the exit were similar to other previously studied European populations.
