Abstract
Biodegradable electrospun sponges are of interest for various applications including tissue engineering, drug release, dental therapy, plant protection, and plant fertilization. Biodegradable electrospun poly(l-lactide)/poly(ε-caprolactone) (PLLA/PCL) blend fiber-based sponge with hierarchical pore structure is inherently hydrophobic, which is disadvantageous for application in tissue engineering, fertilization, and drug delivery. Contact angles and model studies for staining with a hydrophilic dye for untreated, plasma-treated, and surfactant-treated PLLA/PCL sponges are reported. Thorough hydrophilization of PLLA/PCL sponges is found only with surfactant-treated sponges. The MTT assay on the leachates from the sponges does not indicate any cell incompatibility. Furthermore, the cell proliferation and penetration of the hydrophilized sponges are verified by in vitro cell culture studies using MG63 and human fibroblast cells.

Abstract
The underprivileged pharmacodynamic action of curcumin, which arose from its low water solubility and rapid metabolism, restricts its therapeutic performance. In this study, (2-Hydroxy isopropyl)-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD) as a macrocycle host molecule was employed to enhance the availability and control release of curcumin by forming a host-guest inclusion complex within an in-situ forming alginate hydrogel. The formation of the inclusion complexes of curcumin with a single host molecule was characterized by FTIR, XRD, TGA, SEM, and DLS analyses. The inclusion complex of curcumin and HPβCD (HPβCD-Cur) showed a high encapsulation efficiency of 88.2 %. According to DLS results, aqueous dispersion of HPβCD-Cur exhibited a unimodal histogram after 2 and 7 days with average particles size of 207.5 and 230.6 nm, respectively. This observation could be because of the formation of an inclusion complex that effectively distributed in solution and prevented curcumin agglomeration. The prepared alginate hydrogel containing HPβCD-Cur demonstrated >87 % reduction in colonies of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which significantly is higher than that for Alg/Cur (<69 %). The Alg/HPβCD-Cur hydrogel exhibited a high water uptake of 470 % after 2 h, and a curcumin cumulative release of 80 % over 72 h, with proper cytocompatibility. Consequently, it was shown that the HPβCD carrier could act as an apt host molecule that can properly encapsulate curcumin and enhance its release from the Alg/HPβCD-Cur hydrogel.

Abstract
Introduction Hearing loss is one of the major congenital problems. The frequency of this problem in different countries has been found to be 3.5-9%, which may induce negative effects on communications, education, and language learning in children. In addition, diagnosing this problem in infants is not possible without implementing the hearing screening methods. Therefore, the objective of this research was to assess the efficacy of newborn hearing screening programs in Zahedan, Iran. Method In the present cross-sectional observational study, all infants born in the maternity hospitals of Zahedan city (hospitals of Nabi Akram, Imam Ali, and Social Security hospitals) in 2020, were assessed. For conducting the research, TEOAE was primarily performed for all newborns. Following that, according to the findings obtained in the ODA test and in case of inappropriate response, evaluation was performed again for the cases. Cases that were rejected again in the second assessment were subjected to the AABR test and in case of failure in this test, the cases underwent a diagnostic ABR test. Results According to our findings, 7700 babies were initially assessed with the OAE test. Among them, 580 (8%) showed no OAE response. Out of 580 newborns that were rejected in the first phase, 76 babies were also rejected in the second phase and amongst them, 8 cases were re-diagnosed with hearing loss. Finally, out of 3 infants who were diagnosed with hearing impairments, 1 (33%) had conductive hearing loss and 2 (67%) had sensorineural hearing loss. Conclusion According to the results of this research, the use of comprehensive neonatal hearing screening programs is necessary for on-time diagnosis and therapy of hearing loss. In addition, screening programs could help improving the health of newborns and their personal, social, and educational development in the future.

Abstract
Favored antibacterial activity associated with excellent biocompatibility, mechanical durability, and exudate handling needs to be addressed by modern dressing to achieve the desired wound healing. This paper deals with developing a new green and facile approach to manufacturing nonleachable antibacterial gelatin-based films for wound dressing. Therefore, a reactive methoxy-silane-functionalized quaternary ammonium compound bearing a fatty amide residue originating from castor oil (Si-CAQ) was initially synthesized. The antibacterial dressings were then fabricated via sol-gel and condensation reactions of the mixture containing gelatin, Si-CAQ, (3-glycidyloxypropyl) trimethoxysilane, and poly(vinyl alcohol). By utilizing bioactive polymers as starting materials and eliminating organic solvents during the dressing preparation, desirable clinical safety could be ensured. The gelatin-based films presented appropriate mechanical properties, such as flexibility and strength, in both dried and hydrated states (tensile strength >6 MPa and elongation >100). It is due to the in situ generations of the inorganic silicon domain in the organic framework via the sol-gel cross-linking process. The prepared dressings exhibited desirable features, including excellent biocompatibility (cell viability >95%), proper wound-exudate-managing characteristics (equilibrium water contact (EWA) 280-350% and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) 2040-2200 g/m2/day), fluid handling capacity (FHC) (3-3.35 g), as well as commendable hemocompatibility. The promising bactericidal activity of the dressing against Bacillus subtilis, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli strains with a contact-killing efficacy of 100% could prevent infection development at the wounded area. As evaluated by the wound scratch assay, the desired fibroblast cell growth, migration, and proliferation indicated the capability of the dressing to facilitate the healing process by encouraging fibroblast cell migration to the damaged area. In vivo wound-healing results showed that the prepared biocidal dressing stimulates wound healing and enhances epithelialization, collagen maturation, and vascularization of wounds due to their antibacterial effects and accelerated cellular functions.

Abstract
It is of paramount importance to prohibit biofilm formation in a wide range of implant devices, such as thermoplastic polyurethane (PU)-based catheters. It is possible only by means of a multifunctional material that provides fast and effective antibacterial activity, proper biocompatibility, and low bacterial and cell adhesion. In this paper, a facile chemistry approach has been developed to modify biomedical-grade PU with PU species, containing reactive uretdione functional groups for functionalization with the contact-type polyguanidine bactericidal agent and oxidized dextran as an antifouling polymer without sacrificing the thermal and mechanical properties. The resulting PU possesses broad-spectrum contact-active antibacterial activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria with fast kinetics. The excellent antifouling capacity was confirmed by low nonspecific protein adsorption and reduced adhesion of fibroblast cells by ≥ 90%. In addition to antiadhesive and antibiofilm properties, high cell viability (>90%) and low hemolysis rate (HR < 1%) verified favorable cytocompatibility. Hence, the strategy followed to functionalize PUs in this paper might be considered to modify PU-based biomedical devices.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION One of the most common reasons for patients to visit a doctor is Sinusitis. Treatment of this disease involves a wide range of topical and systemic drugs, if it left untreated, surgery and sinus drainage will be the only choice. Due to symptoms and problems caused by chronic sinusitis and its treatment, as well as the need for an appropriate solution to reduce this, the present study was conducted to investigate the relationship between The Lund Mackay score and response to medical treatment in patients with chronic sinusitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS The present study was performed cross-sectionally on 150 patients referred to Khatamul- Anbia Hospital in Zahedan for whom the diagnosis of chronic sinusitis was confirmed and met the study criteria. Demographic data and clinical signs of patients were recorded and for based on CT scan, The Lund Mackay score was evaluated. Patients were treated for 4 to 6 weeks and finally re-evaluated for symptoms and response to treatment. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 24, McNemar test, Mann-Whitney and other necessary tests for descriptive statistics. A significance level of 0.05 was considered. RESULTS 3.55% of patients were male (83 patients) and 7.44% were female (67 patients). The mean score of the Lund Mackay in the present study was 92.11 with a standard deviation of 2.3. Symptoms of olfactory dysfunction, sinus pain, nasal obstruction and nasal discharge showed significant improvement after treatment (p <05.0). Based on the results obtained at the end of the study, the presence of nasal polyps (p = 001.0) and nasal obstruction (p = 003.0), after the end of the treatment period, showed a significant relationship with the response to treatment. CONCLUSION In general, this study suggested that the mean score of The Lund Mackay had a significant positive relationship with the severity of patients' clinical symptoms and the severity of sinusitis. Therefore, it can be considered as a suitable criterion in diagnostic and therapeutic evaluations of patients.

Abstract
To boost the healing process in a full-thickness wound, a simple and efficient strategy based on adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs) transplantation is described in this work. To increase the chance of ADSCs immobilization in the wound bed and prevent its migration, these cells are fully grown on the surface of a thermoresponsive dressing membrane under in vitro condition. Then, the cells sheet with their secreted extracellular matrix (ECM) is transferred to the damaged skin with the help of this dressing membrane. This membrane remains on wound bed and acts both as a cell sheet transfer vehicle, after external reduction of temperature, and protect wound during the healing process like a common wound dressing. The visual inspection of wounded skin (rat animal model) at selected time intervals shows a higher wound closure rate for ADSCs treated group. For this group of rats, the better quality of reconstructed tissue is approved by results of histological and immunohistochemical analysis since the higher length of the new epidermis, the higher thickness of re-epithelialization layer, a higher level of neovascularization and capillary density, and the least collagen deposition are detected in the healed tissue.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Adenotonsillar hypertrophy is a common disorder in the children’s population that can lead to growth disorders. Chronic adenotonsillar hypertrophy can cause a break in the normal growth of children, weight loss, and decreased growth hormone secretion.
AIM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate adenotonsillar hypertrophy in the growth rate of children with height, weight, and body mass index (BMI).
METHODS: In this descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study, after examining 312, 3–10-year-old children with adenotonsillar hypertrophy, who met the inclusion criteria, growth scales were evaluated and entered into the patient evaluation form.
RESULTS: There was a significant relationship between BMI, height, weight, and severity of tonsillar hypertrophy at Brodsky’s scale (P <0.001). Our studies showed well that with increasing severity of adenotonsillar hypertrophy disease, the growth indicators are also decreased in children.
CONCLUSION: Adenotonsillar hypertrophy decreases growth indicators in children. There was also a relationship between growth indicators and severity of adenotonsillar hypertrophy in patients.

Abstract
This study introduces a new polyethylene glycol (PEG) based polyurethane-siloxane membrane containing a quaternary ammonium ionic liquid for CO2/CH4 separation. The designed ionic liquid was prepared in two steps: (i) (3-chloropropyl)triethoxysilane (CPS) and N,N-dimethylpropyl amine (NDPA) were reacted with each other to form the methoxysilane-functionalized quaternary ammonium component, then (ii) chloride ion (Cl-) of the product was exchanged with tetrafluoroborate ion (BF4-). The resulting compound, a reactive methoxysilane-functionalized ionic liquid (Si-IL) was chemically anchored to the polymer backbone through the sol-gel hydrolysis and condensation reaction. Based on the permeation tests, the IL containing PEG-based polyurethane-siloxane membranes at different concentration of Si-IL (XSi-PPUIL) were found to be potential candidates for CO2 removal from CH4. For instance, the CO2/CH4 selectivity of XSi-PPUIL membranes with the Si-IL content of 10 wt% was 3.3-fold greater than the Si-IL free membranes; while, the CO2 permeability for IL tethered membranes was 9.7% higher than the corresponding IL-free membrane.

Abstract
Radical mediated photochemical thiol-yne click polymerization of thiol-terminated polyurethane prepolymers, with poly(ethylene glycol) soft segment at two different molecular weights, a propargyl terminated urethane crosslinker and silver salt was utilized to prepare versatile wound dressings containing well-dispersed Ag° nanoparticles produced via in situ reduction of Ag+ ions. The dressings with optimized chemical structure showed desirable fluid handling capacity (up to 4.84 g/10 cm2 d-1) to provide moist environment over damaged tissue. They were permeable to oxygen and carbon dioxide, therefore, the processes related to tissue regeneration of wound bed could be continued without problem. Their appropriate tensile strength (up to 3.87 MPa) and suitable conformability (less than 0.1% permanent set) enabled protection of damaged skin tissue from external physical forces during the healing process, even for wounds present at organs with a high degree of freedom. The proper cytocompatibility of the prepared dressings and their ability to support growth and proliferation of fibroblast cells as determined by wound scratch healing assay showed the potential utility of the dressings to motivate wound healing progression by migration of cells to the damaged area. In addition, these dressings with in situ formed silver nanoparticles exhibited promising antimicrobial activity against different bacterial and fungal strains, and consequently could encourage wound healing process by prevention from infection in the wound site.

Abstract
Despite some proposed roles for the diagnostic impact of the cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential test in the patients with Meniere's disease, the role of this test as an objective instrument in following up the patients with Meniere's disease who underwent. Intratympanic steroid injection is not cleared. In a prospective study, thirty-one adult patients with definite one-sided Meniere's disease with vertigo as main complaint refractory to medical treatments for three months, were selected. Patients underwent three times of intratympanic dexamethasone injection with one-week intervals. We performed cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential test at first and four weeks after the last injection for all participants. We followed the patients for one year. The study results were analyzed with the chi-square test. Cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential test could not be recorded in 26 patients (83.9%), and the test results were abnormal in the remaining 5 patients. The results were abnormal in the healthy ear of 32.3% of the patients. Despite the clinical improvement of the symptoms after intratympanic injection, the test results were not changed. Cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential test could not be recorded in the majority of the patients with Meniere's disease; while it is usually recorded in normal ears. On the other hand, results of the cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential test do not change during the early phase after treatment and could not be a good option for follow up and evaluating the response in this situation.

Abstract
Preserving wounds from bacterial and fungal infections and retaining optimum moist environment over damaged tissue are major challenges in wound care management. Application of wound dressings with antimicrobial activity and appropriate wound exudates handling ability is of particular significance for promoting wound healing. To this end, preparation and evaluation of novel wound dres1sings made from polyurethane/siloxane network containing graphene oxide (GO) nanoplatelets are described. The particular sol-gel hydrolysis/condensation procedure applied for the preparation of dressings leads to an appropriate distribution of GO nanoplatelets in the dressing membranes. The crosslinked siloxane domains and the presence of GO nanoplatelets within polymeric chains offered necessary mechanical strength for dressings. Meanwhile, a combination of hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties in dressing backbone enabled suitable wound exudate management. Therefore, both of physical protection from external forces and preservation of moist environment over wound were attained by using the designed dressings. Widespread antimicrobial activity against gram-positive, gram-negative and fungal strains was recorded for the dressing with the optimum amount of GO, meanwhile, very good cytocompatibility against fibroblast cells was noted for these dressings. In vivo assay of the GO containing dressing on rat animal model reveals that the dressing can promote wound healing by complete re-epithelization, enhanced vascularization and collagen deposition on healed tissue.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Meniere's disease (MD) is a disease of the inner ear that presents itself with repeated episodes of vertigo (96.2%), tinnitus (91.1%), and sensorineural hearing loss (87.7 %). In this article we sought to assess the effects of intratympanic (IT) injections of dexamethasone on definite cases of MD using electrocochleography (ECOG). MATERIALS AND METHODS In this hospital-based case series in 36 patients, we measured audiometric values and ECOG in all patients before, 1 month and 6 months after 4-mg/mL IT injections of dexamethasone. RESULTS Four patients (11%) had improved hearing following the intervention. No difference in pure tone audiometry (PTA) was observed following IT injections (P=0.492), while speech discrimination score (SDS) was significantly improved (P=0.008). There was a significant improvement in vertigo 1 month after IT injections (P<0.001), although this effect did not last for 6 months. No significant change in ECOG was observed between before and after treatment (P=0.052). CONCLUSION IT dexamethasone injections can improve vertigo in definite cases of MD, although it seems that the effect is only temporary.

Abstract
Polyurethane/siloxane based wound dressing for transferring fibroblast cell sheet to wounded skin and ability to provide an optimum condition for cellular activity at damaged tissue was prepared in this research. The dressing was made thermoresponsive, via the introduction of a poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) copolymer into the backbone of dressing. The ability of membrane for adhesion, growth, and proliferation of fibroblast cells was improved via surface modification with gelatin. The optimized dressing exhibited appropriate tensile strength (4.5MPa) and elongation at break (80%) to protect wound against physical forces. Due to controlled equilibrium water absorption of about 89% and water vapor transmission rate of 2040g/m(2)day, the dressing could maintain the favorable moist environment over moderate to high exuding wounds. The grown cell sheet on dressing membrane could easily roll up from the surface just with lowering the temperature. The in vivo study of the wound dressed with cell loaded membrane confirmed the accelerated healing and production of tissue with complete re-epithelization, enhanced vascularization, and increased collagen deposition on the damaged area.

Abstract
In first part of this experiment, biocompatibility of the newly developed electroactive polyurethane/siloxane films containing aniline tetramer moieties was demonstrated with proliferation and differentiation of C2C12 myoblasts. Here we further assessed the cytocompatibility of the prepared samples with HL1-cell line, the electrophysiological properties and the patch clamp recording of the seeded cells over the selected electroactive sample. Presence of electroactive aniline tetramer in the structure of polyurethane/siloxane led to the increased expression of cardiac-specific genes of HL-1 cells involved in muscle contraction and electrical coupling. Our results showed that expression of Cx43, TrpT-2, and SERCA genes was significantly increased in conductive sample compared to tissue culture plate and the corresponding non-conductive analogous. The prepared materials were not only biocompatible in terms of cellular toxicity, but did not alter the intrinsic electrical characteristics of HL-1 cells. Embedding the electroactive moiety into the prepared films improved the properties of these polymeric cardiac construct through the enhanced transmission of electrical signals between the cells. Based on morphological observation, calcium imaging and electrophysiological recordings, we demonstrated the potential applicability of these materials for cardiac tissue engineering. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract
A series of novel polyurethane/siloxane-based wound dressing membranes was prepared through sol-gel reaction of methoxysilane end-functionalized urethane prepolymers composed of castor oil and ricinoleic methyl ester as well as methoxysilane functional aniline tetramer (AT) moieties. The samples were fully characterized and their physicochemical, mechanical, electrical, and biological properties were assayed. The biological activity of these dressings against fibroblast cells and couple of microbes was also studied. It was revealed that samples that displayed electroactivity by introduction of AT moieties showed a broad range of antimicrobial activity toward different microorganisms, promising antioxidant (radical scavenging) efficiency and significant activity for stimulation of fibroblast cell growth and proliferation. Meanwhile, these samples showed appropriate tensile strength and ability for maintaining a moist environment over a wound by controlled equilibrium water absorption and water vapor transmission rate. The selected electroactive dressing was subjected to an in vivo assay using a rat animal model and the wound healing process was monitored and compared with analogous dressing without AT moieties. The recorded results showed that the electroactive dressings induced an increase in the rate of wound contraction, promoted collagen deposition, and encouraged vascularization in the wounded area. On the basis of the results of in vitro and in vivo assays, the positive influence of designed dressings for accelerated healing of a wound model was confirmed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorder and coeliac disease (CD) is an auto-immune enteropathy that can mimic almost any functional GI disorder. Both IBS and coeliac disease share common symptoms. The aim of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of CD in patients with IBS and its sub-types. PATIENTS AND METHODS In this cross-sectional study (2008-2010), all consecutive patients with IBS who fulfilled the Rome III criteria attending the GI units in Zahedan (Southeast Iran) were included. Patients based on the sub-type of IBS were classified as diarrhoea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (D-IBS), constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (C-IBS) and alternating symptoms (mixed type). Immunoglobulin A (IgA) tissue transglutaminase (anti-tTG) was used to screen patients for CD. In the case of positive serologic test, duodenal biopsies were taken to confirm the diagnosis. RESULTS A total of 364 (221 females and 143 males) patients with IBS were included. The mean ± standard deviation (SD) age of patients was 37.4 ± 12.4 years. Twenty (5.5%) patients were found to have positive IgA anti-tTG. Main symptoms of patients were diarrhoea (11/20), bloating (10/20) and abdominal distension (6/20). Thirteen (10.5%) patients were found to have positive IgA anti-tTG among the D-IBS, two (1.6%) in the C-IBS and five (4.2%) in M-IBS groups. CONCLUSION The prevalence of CD in IBS is high. IBS subjects whose main complaint is diarrhoea, bloating or even abdominal distension should be evaluated for CD.
