First Measurement of the |t| Dependence of Incoherent J/ψ Photonuclear Production. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2024; 132:162302. Abstract
The first measurement of the cross section for incoherent photonuclear production of J/ψ vector mesons as a function of the Mandelstam |t| variable is presented. The measurement was carried out with the ALICE detector at midrapidity, |y|<0.8, using ultraperipheral collisions of Pb nuclei at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. This rapidity interval corresponds to a Bjorken-x range (0.3-1.4)×10^{-3}. Cross sections are given in five |t| intervals in the range 0.04<|t|<1 GeV^{2} and compared to the predictions by different models. Models that ignore quantum fluctuations of the gluon density in the colliding hadron predict a |t| dependence of the cross section much steeper than in data. The inclusion of such fluctuations in the same models provides a better description of the data.

Metabolic tumor volume predicts outcome in patients with advanced stage follicular lymphoma from the RELEVANCE trial. Ann Oncol 2024; 35:130-137. Abstract
BACKGROUND We investigated the prognostic value of baseline positron emission tomography (PET) parameters for patients with treatment-naïve follicular lymphoma (FL) in the phase III RELEVANCE trial, comparing the immunomodulatory combination of lenalidomide and rituximab (R2) versus R-chemotherapy (R-chemo), with both regimens followed by R maintenance therapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS Baseline characteristics of the entire PET-evaluable population (n = 406/1032) were well balanced between treatment arms. The maximal standard uptake value (SUVmax) and the standardized maximal distance between tow lesions (SDmax) were extracted, the standardized distance between two lesions the furthest apart, were extracted. The total metabolic tumor volume (TMTV) was computed using the 41% SUVmax method. RESULTS With a median follow-up of 6.5 years, the 6-year progression-free survival (PFS) was 57.8%, the median TMTV was 284 cm3, SUVmax was 11.3 and SDmax was 0.32 m-1, with no significant difference between arms. High TMTV (>510 cm3) and FLIPI were associated with an inferior PFS (P = 0.013 and P = 0.006, respectively), whereas SUVmax and SDmax were not (P = 0.08 and P = 0.12, respectively). In multivariable analysis, follicular lymphoma international prognostic index (FLIPI) and TMTV remained significantly associated with PFS (P = 0.0119 and P = 0.0379, respectively). These two adverse factors combined stratified the overall population into three risk groups: patients with no risk factors (40%), with one factor (44%), or with both (16%), with a 6-year PFS of 67.7%, 54.5%, and 41.0%, respectively. No significant interaction between treatment arms and TMTV or FLIPI (P = 0.31 or P = 0.59, respectively) was observed. The high-risk group (high TMTV and FLIPI 3-5) had a similar PFS in both arms (P = 0.45) with a median PFS of 68.4% in the R-chemo arm versus 71.4% in the R2 arm. CONCLUSIONS Baseline TMTV is predictive of PFS, independently of FLIPI, in patients with advanced FL even in the context of antibody maintenance.

Abstract
Understanding the role of parton mass and Casimir color factors in the quantum chromodynamics parton shower represents an important step in characterizing the emission properties of heavy quarks. Recent experimental advances in jet substructure techniques have provided the opportunity to isolate and characterize gluon emissions from heavy quarks. In this Letter, the first direct experimental constraint on the charm-quark splitting function is presented, obtained via the measurement of the groomed shared momentum fraction of the first splitting in charm jets, tagged by a reconstructed D^{0} meson. The measurement is made in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV, in the low jet transverse-momentum interval of 15≤p_{T}^{jet ch}<30 GeV/c where the emission properties are sensitive to parton mass effects. In addition, the opening angle of the first perturbative emission of the charm quark, as well as the number of perturbative emissions it undergoes, is reported. Comparisons to measurements of an inclusive-jet sample show a steeper splitting function for charm quarks compared with gluons and light quarks. Charm quarks also undergo fewer perturbative emissions in the parton shower, with a reduced probability of large-angle emissions.

Abstract
The most precise measurements to date of the _{Λ}^{3}H lifetime τ and Λ separation energy B_{Λ} are obtained using the data sample of Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV collected by ALICE at the LHC. The _{Λ}^{3}H is reconstructed via its charged two-body mesonic decay channel (_{Λ}^{3}H→^{3}He+π^{-} and the charge-conjugate process). The measured values τ=[253±11(stat)±6(syst)] ps and B_{Λ}=[102±63(stat)±67(syst)] keV are compatible with predictions from effective field theories and confirm that the _{Λ}^{3}H structure is consistent with a weakly bound system.

First Measurement of Antideuteron Number Fluctuations at Energies Available at the Large Hadron Collider. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2023; 131:041901. Abstract
The first measurement of event-by-event antideuteron number fluctuations in high energy heavy-ion collisions is presented. The measurements are carried out at midrapidity (|η|<0.8) as a function of collision centrality in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV using the ALICE detector. A significant negative correlation between the produced antiprotons and antideuterons is observed in all collision centralities. The results are compared with a state-of-the-art coalescence calculation. While it describes the ratio of higher order cumulants of the antideuteron multiplicity distribution, it fails to describe quantitatively the magnitude of the correlation between antiproton and antideuteron production. On the other hand, thermal-statistical model calculations describe all the measured observables within uncertainties only for correlation volumes that are different with respect to those describing proton yields and a similar measurement of net-proton number fluctuations.

Enhanced Deuteron Coalescence Probability in Jets. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2023; 131:042301. Abstract
The transverse-momentum (p_{T}) spectra and coalescence parameters B_{2} of (anti)deuterons are measured in p-p collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV for the first time in and out of jets. In this measurement, the direction of the leading particle with the highest p_{T} in the event (p_{T}^{lead}>5 GeV/c) is used as an approximation for the jet axis. The event is consequently divided into three azimuthal regions, and the jet signal is obtained as the difference between the toward region, that contains jet fragmentation products in addition to the underlying event (UE), and the transverse region, which is dominated by the UE. The coalescence parameter in the jet is found to be approximately a factor of 10 larger than that in the underlying event. This experimental observation is consistent with the coalescence picture and can be attributed to the smaller average phase-space distance between nucleons in the jet cone as compared with the underlying event. The results presented in this Letter are compared to predictions from a simple nucleon coalescence model, where the phase-space distributions of nucleons are generated using pythia8 with the Monash 2013 tuning, and to predictions from a deuteron production model based on ordinary nuclear reactions with parametrized energy-dependent cross sections tuned on data. The latter model is implemented in pythia8.3. Both models reproduce the observed large difference between in-jet and out-of-jet coalescence parameters, although the almost flat trend of the B_{2}^{Jet} is not reproduced by the models, which instead give a decreasing trend.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Antibody response plays a fundamental role in the natural history of infectious disease. A better understanding of the immune response in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection could be important for identifying patients at greater risk of developing a more severe form of disease and with a worse prognosis. METHODS We performed a cross-sectional analysis to determine the presence and the levels of both anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG and IgA in a cohort of hospitalized patients with confirmed infection at different times in the natural history of the disease. Patients enrolled when admitted at the emergency department were prospectively followed up during hospital stay. RESULTS Overall, 131 patients were considered with a total of 237 samples processed. Cross-sectional analysis showed that seroconversion for IgA seems to occur between days 6 and 15, while IgG response seems to occur slightly later, peaking at day 20 after symptoms onset. Both IgA and IgG were maintained beyond 2 months. Severe patients showed a higher IgA response compared with mild patients when analyzing optical density (8.3 versus 5.6, p < 0.001). Prospective analysis conducted on 55 patients confirmed that IgA appear slightly earlier than IgG. After stratifying for the severity of disease, both the IgA and IgG responses were more vigorous in severe cases. Moreover, while IgG tended to stabilize, there was a relevant decline after the first month of IgA levels in mild cases. CONCLUSION IgA and IgG antibody response is closely related, although seroconversion for IgA occurs earlier. Both IgA and IgG are maintained beyond 2 months. Severe patients showed a more vigorous IgA and IgG response. IgA levels seem to decline after 1 month since the onset of symptoms in mild cases. Our results should be interpreted with cautions due to several limitations in our study, mainly the small number of cases, lack of data on viral load and clinical setting.

Abstract
BACKGROUND this study aimed to determine the proportion of people living with HIV (PLWH) with anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies in a large sample from a single HIV referral center in Rome, Italy; the time-frame included both the first and the second wave of the Italian COVID-19 pandemic; Methods: we conducted a cross-sectional study on stored cryopreserved samples from 1 March 2020 to 30 November 2020. Total antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 were preliminarily tested using a chemiluminescent immunoassay. Positive results were re-tested with an ELISA assay as an IgG confirmatory test; Results: overall, 1389 samples were analyzed from 1106 PLWH: 69% males, median age 53 years, 94% on antiretroviral treatment, 93% with HIV-RNA < 50 copies/mL, median CD4 cell count 610 cell/µL. Our analysis revealed a total of n = 8 patients who tested IgG positive during the study period. Seroprevalence was equal to 0% in the first months (March-June); this started to increase in July and reached a maximum rate of 1.59% in October 2020. The overall seroprevalence was 0.72% (8/1106, 95% CI 0.37-1.42). CONCLUSION our findings from this setting show a low IgG SARS-CoV-2 prevalence among PLWH as compared to data available from the general population.

Abstract
Weather and the susceptibility of children to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection is still a debated question and currently a hot topic, particularly in view of important decisions regarding opening schools. Therefore, we performed this prospective analysis of anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies in children with known household exposure to SARS-CoV-2 and compared their IgG status with the other adults exposed to the index case in the same household. A total of 30 families with a documented COVID-19 index case were included. A total of 44 out of 80 household contacts (55%) of index patients had anti SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies. In particular, 16/27 (59,3%) adult partners had IgG antibodies compared with 28/53 (52,3%) of pediatric contacts (p > .05). Among the pediatric population, children ≥5 years of age had a similar probability of having SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies (21/39, 53.8%) compared to those less than 5 years old (7/14, 50%) (p > .05). Adult partners and children also had a similar probability of having SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies. Interestingly, 10/28 (35.7%) of children and 5/27 (18.5%) of adults with SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies were previously diagnosed as COVID-19 cases. Our study shows evidence of a high rate of IgG antibodies in children exposed to SARS-CoV-2. This report has public health implications, highlighting the need to establish appropriate guidelines for school openings and other social activities related to childhood.

Abstract
Healthcare workers are at the forefront against COVID-19, worldwide. Since Fondazione Policlinico Universitario A. Gemelli (FPG) IRCCS was enlisted as a COVID-19 hospital, the healthcare workers deployed to COVID-19 wards were separated from those with limited/no exposure, whereas the administrative staff were designated to work from home. Between 4 June and 3 July 2020, an investigation was conducted to evaluate the seroprevalence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) immunoglobulin (IgG) antibodies among the employees of the FPG using point-of-care (POC) and venous blood tests. Sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values were determined with reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction on nasal/oropharyngeal swabs as the diagnostic gold standard. The participants enrolled amounted to 4777. Seroprevalence was 3.66% using the POC test and 1.19% using the venous blood test, with a significant difference (p < 0.05). The POC test sensitivity and specificity were, respectively, 63.64% (95% confidence interval (CI): 62.20% to 65.04%) and 96.64% (95% CI: 96.05% to 97.13%), while those of the venous blood test were, respectively, 78.79% (95% CI: 77.58% to 79.94%) and 99.36% (95% CI: 99.07% to 99.55%). Among the low-risk populations, the POC test's predictive values were 58.33% (positive) and 98.23% (negative), whereas those of the venous blood test were 92.86% (positive) and 98.53% (negative). According to our study, these serological tests cannot be a valid alternative to diagnose COVID-19 infection in progress.

Abstract
It is well known that several viruses, as well as SARS-CoV-2, can be transmitted through airborne diffusion of saliva micro-droplets. For this reason, many research groups have devoted their efforts in order to gain new insight into the transport of fluids and particles originated from human respiratory tracts. This paper aims to provide a contribution to the numerical modeling of saliva droplets' diffusion produced by coughing. It is worth noting that droplets' diameters of interest in this work are such that represent typical emission during a cough. Aerosolization effects are neglected since emitted droplets' diameters are greater than 10 µm. In particular, the well-known problem around the safety distance to be held for avoiding virus transmission in the absence of external wind is further investigated. Thus, new indices capable of evaluating the contamination risk are introduced, and the possibility to inactivate virus particles by means of an external ultraviolet-C (UV-C) radiation source is studied. For this purpose, a new model which takes into account biological inactivation deriving from UV-C exposure in an Eulerian-Lagrangian framework is presented.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Gastrointestinal schwannomas are rare benign mesenchymal tumors originating from Schwann cells, the nerve sheath belonging to the Auerbach's plexus or, less frequently, to Meisser's plexus. The esophagus is the least common site accounting for less than 2% of all esophageal tumors, and the upper to mid portion is usually involved. Esophageal schwannomas affect more frequently middle-aged Asian women. The most common symptom is dysphagia. Diagnosis requires histological and immunohistochemical studies and the standard of care is surgical resection. CASE REPORT We present the case of a 22-year-old Caucasian male who was admitted to our hospital for progressive dysphagia and acute chest pain. An EGDS showed an elongated bulging of the lower esophagus with signs of a subcentimetric mucosal erosion. A CT-scan showed a lower esophageal ectasia and a huge postero-lateral wall mass measuring 37x28x70 mm. An endoscopic ultrasonography showed a hypoechoic heterogeneous mass with multiple anechoic areas and a fine needle biopsy was performed. Histological examination showed tissue made up of spindle cells with mild eosinophilic cytoplasm and rare nuclear atypia, which were intensively and diffusely positive for the S100 protein on immunohistochemical studies thus allowing pre-operative diagnosis of "ancient" schwannoma. after a multidisciplinary discussion, the patient underwent a surgical resection. Since the tumor had a transmural extension, a subtotal esophagectomy was performed to achieve complete resection with negative margins. CONCLUSIONS This is the first case of a young Caucasian male patient with an "ancient" schwannoma of the lower esophagus, a benign but locally advanced lesion treated by subtotal esophagectomy.

Abstract
From Kant to current perspectives in neuroaesthetics, the experience of beauty has been described as disinterested, i.e. focusing on the stimulus perceptual features while neglecting self-referred concerns. At a neurophysiological level, some indirect evidence suggests that disinterested aesthetic appreciation might be associated with attentional enhancement and inhibition of motor behaviour. To test this hypothesis, we performed three auditory-evoked potential experiments, employing consonant and dissonant two-note musical intervals. Twenty-two volunteers judged the beauty of intervals (Aesthetic Judgement task) or responded to them as fast as possible (Detection task). In a third Go-NoGo task, a different group of twenty-two participants had to refrain from responding when hearing intervals. Individual aesthetic judgements positively correlated with response times in the Detection task, with slower motor responses for more appreciated intervals. Electrophysiological indexes of attentional engagement (N1/P2) and motor inhibition (N2/P3) were enhanced for more appreciated intervals. These findings represent the first experimental evidence confirming the disinterested interest hypothesis and may have important applications in research areas studying the effects of stimulus features on learning and motor behaviour.

Abstract
Neuroaesthetic research suggests that aesthetic appreciation results from the interaction between the object perceptual features and the perceiver's sensory processing dynamics. In the present study, we investigated the relationship between aesthetic appreciation and attentional modulation at a behavioural and psychophysiological level. In a first experiment, fifty-eight healthy participants performed a visual search task with abstract stimuli containing more or less natural spatial frequencies and subsequently were asked to give an aesthetic evaluation of the images. The results evidenced that response times were faster for more appreciated stimuli. In a second experiment, we recorded visual evoked potentials (VEPs) during exposure to the same stimuli. The results showed, only for more appreciated images, an enhancement in C1 and N1, P3 and N4 VEP components. Moreover, we found increased attention-related occipital alpha desynchronization for more appreciated images. We interpret these data as indicative of the existence of a correlation between aesthetic appreciation and perceptual processing enhancement, both at a behavioural and at a neurophysiological level.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most prevalent heart rhythm disorder in clinical practice and it is associated with poor quality of life and increased risks of heart failure, dementia, stroke, and death. Moreover AF management is a huge cost for healthcare systems. AF is irregular, typically originates from the pulmonary veins, and as such, requires cardioversion to terminate persistent episodes. AF is not susceptible to pace-termination, however, the MINERVA trial has shown that AF may transform in slower organized rhythms such as atrial flutter or atrial tachycardia, which can often be terminated by atrial anticahycardia pacing (ATP); in particular by Reactive ATP, a specific ATP feature which can be re-armed when atrial arrhythmias get slower or more regular. The MINERVA trial showed that the combination of ATP, preventive atrial pacing algorithms and minimal ventricular pacing (MVP) was associated with lower progression to persistent and permanent AF, compared with standard DDD pacing mode and to MVP mode, in pacemaker patients with clinical history of AF.
Purpose
We aimed to confirm MINERVA trial results in real-world clinical practice and to evaluate whether AF prevention was associated with preventive atrial pacing or solely with ATP. Indeed in our project atrial preventive pacing algorithms were not enabled and the pacing mode (DDD or MVP) was chosen according to patients' AV conduction characteristics.
Methods
Consecutive dual-chamber pacemaker patients with sinus node disease and device detected AT/AF were prospectively followed by 30 Italian cardiologic centers in an observational research. Clinical and device data were collected and reviewed by expert cardiologists to assess AT/AF occurrence through in clinic visit and/or remote transmissions of device data.
Results
A total of 239 patients (73 years old, 56% male) wearing a dual-chamber pacemaker with Reactive ATP were included in the project, followed for a median observation period of 13 months and compared with 1145 patients included in the MINERVA trial followed for a median observation period of 34 months and programmed with DDD pacing mode (383 patients), MVP (389 patients) and MVP+Reactive ATP+preventive algorithms (373 patients). As shown in the following figure incidence of 7 consecutive days of AF in the patients treated by DDD/MVP+Reactive ATP in real-world clinical practice was very similar to that found in the MINERVA trial arm programmed with MVP+Reactive ATP+preventive algorithms.
Incidence of AF longer than 7 days
Conclusions
Our analysis performed in a population of sinus node disease patients with dual-chamber pacemakers confirmed MINERVA trial results in terms of prevention of long-lasting AF episodes. In particular these results confirm the benefit associated with the use of Reactive ATP, rather than preventive atrial pacing algorithms.

Abstract
Commercially available dog treats have become very popular and a common part of the pet's diet, yet very little is known about peoples' opinions and feeding habits; therefore, a survey was shared on a popular social network. Most of the self-selected interviewed owners (n = 1833, 83%) use treats regularly, mainly to reward their dog's behavior or during training-sports activities. Owners usually buy several types of treats, of which biscuits and dental care sticks are the most common, and usually hand out one to five pieces to their dogs every day. Most owners read the labels of the treats to seek the ingredients list and the claimed health benefits; contrarily, many owners look for non-nutritional values, such as flavor (n = 321, 18%), brand (n = 72, 4%) or shape (n = 46, 3%). Seventy-five percent of the owners (n = 1369) follow the feeding instructions provided by the producers on the label.Treat feeding is a common practice among dog owners and there is great variability among regimens (e.g., types and quantities provided). Understanding the owner's attitudes could help veterinarians educate them to manage treats in the dog's diet.

Abstract
Research or diagnostic conditions may require the storage of salivary samples for long periods before analysis is processed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the stability of canine salivary α-amylase, lysozyme, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and total calcium and phosphorus after storage for 1, 3 and 6 months at -20°C. Available saliva samples were 75 immediately after collection (T0) and 46 at 1 month (T1), 31 at 3 months (T3) and 18 at 6 months (T6) of storage, according to the number of aliquots collected from each saliva sample. Compared to T0, LDH declined by 92.3% after 1 month of storage (P<0.001), whereas lysozyme concentration significantly decreased as storage time increased (-29.3%, -43.4% and -59.1% at T1, T3, and T6 respectively, P<0.001). Amylase maintained basically the same concentration for the entire experimental period, whereas total calcium and phosphorus concentration decreased over time (calcium, P<0.001). Assessing the long-term stability of canine salivary analytes stored at -20°C may have important implications in diagnosis and research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Italy is a low-incidence region for hepatitis A; however, during the last 2 years an increase in the incidence of hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection was reported in Europe. The aim of this study was to describe this recent outbreak. METHODS We retrospectively analysed all cases of acute hepatitis A diagnosed at our laboratory between January 2010 and June 2017. We evaluated the following variables at the time of diagnosis: sex, age, nationality, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT/AST), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT/ALT), bilirubin concentration, international normalized ratio (INR) and the presence or absence of anti-HIV-1/2 antibodies. Hospitalization was also considered. We analysed these parameters using the χ2 test and Mann-Whitney U-test. RESULTS A total of 225 cases were analysed; 82.7% were in male patients, 94.2% were in Italians and the median age of the patients was 36.4 years. At diagnosis, the median GOT value was 306 U/L, the median GPT was 1389 U/L, and the median total bilirubin value was 5.88 mg/dL. Hospitalization was required for 142 patients, with a median duration of hospital stay of 8.5 days. In 2016-2017 we registered 141 cases, with a higher prevalence of male patients, higher GPT values and a higher prevalence of patients aged 20-39 years compared with older (2010-2015) cases. Homosexual intercourse was reported as the HAV risk factor in 70.2% of patients. HIV serology was available for 120 patients: 24 were HIV-positive, four of whom represented new diagnoses. HIV-positive patients showed lower bilirubin and GPT values and fewer hospitalizations than HIV-negative patients. CONCLUSIONS In 2016-2017, we saw a rise in the number of hepatitis A cases, with a higher prevalence of adult male patients. No significant differences regarding the prevalence of HIV coinfection emerged.

Abstract
The massive development of the pet food industry in recent years has lead to the formulation of hundreds of canine and feline complete extruded foods with the objective of meeting both the needs of the animals and numerous demands from pet owners. In the meantime, highly variable raw material compositions and the industry's new production techniques oblige manufacturers to monitor all phases of the extrusion process closely in order to ensure the targeted composition and quality of the products. This study aimed at evaluating the potential of infrared technology (visible and near-infrared spectrophotometer; 570-1842 nm) in predicting the chemical composition and peroxide value (PV) of unground commercial extruded dog foods. Six hundred and forty-nine commercial extruded dog foods were collected. For each product, an unground aliquot was analysed by infrared instrument while a second aliquot was sent to a laboratory for proximate analysis and PV quantification. The wide range of extruded dog food typologies included in the study was responsible for the wide variability observed within each nutritional trait, especially crude fibre and ash. The mean value of the 208 pet foods sampled for PV quantification was 17.49 mEq O2 /kg fat (min 2.2 and max 94.10 mEq O2 /kg fat). The coefficients of determination in cross-validation of NIRS prediction models were 0.77, 0.97, 0.83, 0.86, 0.78 and 0.94 for moisture, crude protein, crude fat, crude fibre, ash and nitrogen-free extract (NFE) respectively. PV prediction was less precise, as demonstrated by the coefficient of determination in cross-validation (0.66). The results demonstrated the potential of NIRS in predicting chemical composition in unground samples, with lower accuracy for moisture and ash, while PV prediction models suggest use for screening purposes only.

Abstract
Researchers have been looking for modifying surfaces of polymeric biomaterials approved by FDA to obtain nanofeatures and bactericidal properties. If modified, it would be very interesting because the antibiotic administration could be reduced and, therefore, the bacterial resistance. Here, we report the electrospinning of poly (lactic acid) (PLA) with high loadings of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2, 1-5wt%) and their bactericidal properties. TiO2 nanoparticles have been recognized for a long time for their antibacterial, low cost and self-cleaning properties. However, their ability to reduce bacteria functions when used in polymers has not been well studied to date. In this context, we aimed here to generate nanostructured PLA electrospun fiber-TiO2 nanoparticle composites for further evaluation of their bactericidal activity and cell viability. TEM and SEM micrographs revealed the successful electrospinning of PLA/TiO2 and the generation of polymer-TiO2 nanostructures. When increasing the TiO2 concentration, we observed a proportional increase in the nanoparticle density along the fiber and surface. The nanostructured PLA/TiO2 nanofibers showed no mammalian cell toxicity and, most importantly, possessed bactericidal activity with higher TiO2 loads. Such results suggest that the present PLA electrospun fiber-TiO2 nanoparticle composites should be further studied for a wide range of biomedical applications.

Abstract
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. The discovery of the occurrence of activating KIT mutations and KIT expression in GISTs opened the way to the unequivocal diagnosis of these tumors and to their successful treatment with imatinib, a tyrosin kinase inhibitor. Since then, research progress revealed molecular GIST triggers alternative to KIT, implying heterogeneous analytic approaches and prognostic expectations. Several targeted therapies, variably specific for each GIST trigger, have been developed or are being investigated. Thus, GISTs eventually revealed a family of diseases rather than a single tumor type. All these events had an unprecedented impact on pathology practice, constituting at the same time a heavy burden and an exciting challenge, ultimately putting pathologists in the spotlight as never before. This review will discuss the most recent advances concerning GISTs, highlighting the tasks of pathologists facing these tumors, with an emphasis on traps potentially compromising a correct diagnosis.
